THE RUTH'S CHRIS EFFECT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the Ruth's Chris Effect, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they feel the less said about Ruth's Chris and its effect, the better.

Last night, my sister e-mailed me, asking if I would buy something from Amazon for her and I said no problem.  Since her order has free shipping, I decided to order a couple of CDs for myself.  I ordered Nice Fighting You: A 30th Anniversary Celebration and the original Broadway cast recording to Violet with Sutton Foster.  "Violet" includes AutoRip, so I'm listening to it now as it's downloading.

Well, it's time for bed.  I checked and I actually need to work concessions starting at 10:30 am, not 11:00 am!  I don't like to do things early on the weekends, but they needed someone and the shift ends early enough so that I won't miss The Tony Awards!

Good night, all!

Off to church, where they are dedicating and blessing a new Steinway 7 foot piano (well, new to the church, but not brand new - brand new costs about $94,000!). Also, to shake things up for Pentecost, it will be a jazz service, including flute, bass, drums, and piano performing the Claude Bolling suite.

Yes, they are, DR Mike. That's why bk wants the DRs to come to a decision about spoilers. In the past, those of us on the right side of the country have posted without naming names, so that those on the left side aren't spoiled. If you're pretty current on Broadway, though, I think you would know who won anyway from the posts. I'm happy with either way.

Good morning, all!  I will shortly head down to Toyland. I've got a libretto to scan for Ben Davis, and I'd like to scan as much of JUBILEE Act One possible.

DR slingshot, good news about Zach! I'll ask for Mikey: how's the vet?

DR vixmom, you are always a prizewinner in my book!

DR Laura, we must be clear about Porgy and Bess:  there is the original 1934 folk opera composed by George Gershwin to a libretto by Dubose Heyward and additional lyrics by Ira Gershwin; in 1942 or so, producer Cheryl Crawford stage a production that converted much of the recitative to spoken dialogue, which to me violates one of piece's major conceits, and this became the standard  text of all productions until the 1970s when the work started to get performances of what actually exists in the published vocal score, and since then the work has been established as the opera that George Gershwin actually composed; then, early in this decade, the Gershwin estate, in what I believe was an attempt to extend the copyright, decided Porgy and Bess needed to be saved and turned into a musical theatre piece. Who cares what George, Ira or Dubose would think of the of this idea: they can't complain; THEY'RE ALL DEAD!. So the graverobbers dug up the body and cut it apart. The first attempt in England, staged by Trevor Nunn, was not a success, so Diane Paulus and her team have produced a new musical theatre piece, with arrangements and musical diversions from a moron and a more politically correct text.  And yes, I am offended, since this garbage now touring as "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" is a travesty of a masterpiece. As for the original work that premiered in 1935, it's brilliant and I admire it enormously.

I believe that is all of my news for the moment.

Good morning, all.

While BK was suffering from Ruth's Chris Effect, I was combating Carnival Food Effect.  I am pretty sure BK got the better deal.

As it stands now, I won't be watching the Tonys where I can also be online.  If I can change that, I will.

Had plenty of sleep, but I awoke to the sound of what I thought was a wasp or hornet outside my window.  Perhaps some nest activity in the works?  Got up, armed myself with a can of my close personal friend Wasp & Hornet Killer, and checked that side of the house.  Didn't see anything, but sprayed anyway.  Then I checked around the rest of the house for good measure, and found -- way up high where I can't reach either of them with the spray -- two small nests, damn them.  Damn them all to hell.  But no activity apparent, so maybe those are dead and abandoned.  I will get closer with a ladder sometime, to make sure they're dead and knock 'em down.

And then after I was back inside, I went to the original window and there was a huge dragonfly sitting on the screen, so it might have just been that all along!  Not sure, but I think they can make a pretty good buzzing noise, too.

My body is a bit tired from my pool activity yesterday. But today it supposed to be another nice day. So I think I will go for a bike ride and then go swimming again at the pool closer to me.

Then I have to pick up my little niece at 3pm because my older niece has her swimming gala then (and another swim meet going on right now). Even though the finals were last week they still have 3 more meets the next 3 weekends. And then the first summer swim meet starts on June 23rd.

Just from that point of view, a gratuitous oldie:
(tune of Someone to Watch Over Me)

There are someones who we long to berate
Woe is our fate;
Make them think straight
The ones who watch our estate

All we want is for our heirs to behave
It feels like they’ve
Deepened our grave
The ones who watch our estate

Although it’s not as big an earner
As Rodgers or Lerner
Some props for the folks who create

You would think they had no food on their plate
Couldn’t they wait?
Oh how we hate
The ones who watch our estate

Excellent post re Porgy and Bess, Mr. DR Elmore, sir.

Thank you. And I forgot to mention: to confuse the issues, the Gershwin estate has changed the title of the original opera Porgy and Bess to The Gershwins Porgy and Bess, and this piece of crap devised by Paulus and crew is also titled The Gershwins Porgy and Bess!

That shouldn't cause any confusion at all!
