Well, you've read the notes, you know the medium is the notes, and now it is time for the medium to be the posts, so let's all have a posting frenzy, by gum and by golly and buy bonds, and let's post until the medium cows come home.
-
Good Evening! Good Morning!
Well.. I'm pretty sure I know what musical DR Noel saw tonight... and since it was in his top three worst Broadway musicals, I could almost hazard a guess at what his other two were - well, maybe at least one of the two, or something like that - ???
As BK mentioned, we had a good rehearsal tonight. And I'm also starting to get comfortable with the order of the show, and finding what "tricks" I have to use in order transition myself from one song to the next - from one mood to the next. -Just so that I'm not surprised when I turn the page. ;)
As for self-help stuff... I think the closest thing I've used/read was "The Four Agreements". Very simple, very thought-provoking.
Otherwise, I've bought copies of "The Soul's Code" and "The Artist's Way", but I haven't read them.
Well, I need to get ready for bed... Rehearsal in about nine hours. Hmmm.. Maybe I'll bring some PIE!!
-
I'm sitting here totally blanking (and blinking) and can think of nothing to say. I know quite a bit about the TOD, but will save that until the morn when I'm not blanking and blinking.
-
PIE!
-
I know nothing about today's topic. I doubt very many people (other than the speaker) end up making money after these sessions. Maybe I just am too happy to bother looking for something in the way of "self help" to riches or whatever is offered.
-
Maybe Jose will bring PIE! Coconut Custard with WHIPPED CREAM. EXTRA whipped cream. Might I just ask why the cream is always being whipped? Is it into S&M? Is the cream misbehavin'?
-
I am fascinated by today's topic and look forward to your posts on same. I'm going to go whip the cream now, just because the cream seems to be so into it.
-
Where have all the WUSSBURGERS gone? Remember the glory days when Laura II and Jenny and all our younguns wuz around these here parts. They have forsaken us, I tell you. Maya, too. What is WITH these younguns, anyway?
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
Well.....just remember Mr Director - they are NOT changes, they are IMPROVEMENTS!!! Always makes my cast feel better when I tell them that, especially if I have a list of improvements! And get a good sound engineer, stage mikes and overheads....watch out for dead spots!!
Brief nudity? There is NO pause button on Broadway?
Self help? Well, hmmmmmmmm.....I have seen a few on television. I have never been to a LIVE presentation. Oh, wait, yes I have....one.
For some reason, the School for the Deaf sent me to a Zig Ziglar seminar. It was exactly what you would think.
The main reason for the success of these "gurus" I think, is the general desperation of some to depend on others to tell them what to do, or to tell them what is wrong. They generally use platitudes and common knowledge things and present them in such a way that the audience convinces itself that it is hearing something new and radical and useful!
Be yourself! Don't let others take advantage of you! Live up to your potential!
The meetings are run like an old fashioned revival meeting, and these gurus present themselves in a way like religious leaders.
Most of them are scary looking! ZZ gets $60,000 + expenses to give your keynote speech! ;D
-
I always thought the people who have all the answers to everything in life, particularly the reasons why you aren't the person you should be, were called "in-laws."
But that's another story, never mind, anyways...
:-\
-
I have no clues as to what is going on with most of our young'uns, but der Brucer is still in contact with Jenny. And I know Noel is in contact with her, as well.
As for pies, we have lots of equipment for pie-making at the store. We have pie tins. We have tart tins. We have weights, which help with blind-baking a pie shell. (Blind baking is when you pre-cook the pie shell in the pan before adding the filling. It's easy enough to fill the shell with rice or beans, but we have specially made ceramic weights that do the same thing. The idea is to keep the pie crust from expanding too much and flaking away.) We also have shields that can help keep the edge of the crust from burning, handy to have around.
And a gizmo that I didn't know existed, but some of our customers swear by it, is a circular plastic envelope that is sealed with a zipper. After lightly flouring the inside of the envelope, the cook puts the dough inside the envelope, seals it, and then rolls the dough out to the edges of the envelope. A perfectly sized pie crust every time!
Me, I don't see myself needing that sort of gadget for some time. I'd rather roll the dough out on a flat surface, and then cut the crust to size after I've put it in the pie pan, the way my mother used to do it. She'd lift the pan up, and cut the dough away from the pan with a sharp knife. Then, pretty blue birds would come and whisk the excess dough away, just like in the cartoons!
What, you thought they made that stuff up?
-
I bought a pumpkin pie at the Kroger store this morning. I think it will be very good this afternoon with vanilla ice cream.
-
Far be it from me to tell anyone how to live his life, but I believe in self-help, not especially in the folks who peddle advice for a fee. I am mistrustful of them.
I know in my own life, when I needed to lose weight, I got down to business and lost it. When I needed to improve my grades in college after the first semester of sophomore slump, I buckled down and did it. I think most of us have an infinite capacity to do anything with ourselves that we wish. In my own case, I haven't needed anyone pointing a finger to show me a way to do it. I've always been able to figure it out for myself.
-
Well, I'm assuming Noel wanted us to guess about his bad Broadway experience, so I'll hazard a guess: BOMBAY DREAMS? No? THE FROGS? Probably.
-
I was hesitating since I don't much about what is on RIGHT NOW....so I will concur with MATTH's guesses....and wait.
-
Unless they have added something to The Frogs, it's not that show. No nudity in Frogs. I'm assuming it's Dracula. They had the first performance last night.
-
TOD: I have no use for motivational speakers. I know Tony Robbins gets paid big bucks to address groups and use his oratory to enervate crowds, but I am one of those people who sit there, perplexed -- like so much fish -- always wondering why the lemmings don't understand that there's no water in which to swim upstream here...that they are swimming really hard but will never get to a destination because no destination is EVER being provided.
Motivators don't ever tell you HOW to do anything...they make you want to attain goals and leave you to your own wits on how to go about it.
I already know that.
Have known since I was in my teens.
There is, of course, a place in this world for motivational speakers. Some are harmless.
And then you get your occasional Hitler.
-
Ah, DR Ben, DRACULA it must be, knowing his non-allegiance to Frank Wildhorn. Thanks.
-
It's sort of cool and overcast in the City of Studio this morning. A pleasant change.
-
We've had rain the last three days, so we're going to be a steam bath today. I felt it coming on this morning as I fiercely mowed the front yard in anticipation of the coming swelter.
-
There's going to be a BLUE MOON tonight! Should be lovely.
-
Looks like I'll be finishing the Charlie Chan MEETING AT MIDNIGHT today (got interrupted by THE JURY and MONK last night before I could finish) and then on to THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES.
-
I'll be E&T for a good chunk of this evening. The theater where I did TITANIC last fall is having an awards ceremony tonight honoring their volunteers, and I'll be attending. Should be fun to see lots of familiar faces.
-
Dear Jenny and I have been in contact as well - she's got Noel taking up lots of her time, and she has really limited computer access time - hopefully when school starts back up she'll find time to rejoin our merry troupe.
-
So called self help gurus prey on innocent people. God helps those who help themselves.
-
If you enjoy hearing American Musical Theatre/the Great American Songbook/Showtunes sung by the great artists of the operatic stage, this morning is for you!
One of our local public radio stations has a regular Saturday morning show devoted to opera, and once a year they air a show called "Anything You Can Do." Today's the day!
If past shows are any indicator, there will be some sublime recordings, some very good ones, and, yes, several ludicrous ones thrown in for a little ginger.
The program runs 9:00 am to noon PDT and can be heard online at www.kusc.org (http://www.kusc.org). (For the denizens of Lalaland, it's 91.5 on your FM dial.)
Enjoy!
-
Did you know that studios sometimes hire "motivational" people to counsel their employees and help them obtain their potential? Lots of actors here in LA go to motivational helpers, too, as well as some writers and directors. What do you think of that? It's not just the financial people like Tony Robbins and that young (no longer) dork who used to have infomercials running every ten minutes around ten years ago, it's a whole cottage industry now.
-
I'm tired this morning, but I did get almost eight hours of sleep, so that's good.
-
I know the world of motivational speaking fairly well through a person I knew who was a motivational speaker (although he hated the term). It is a very strange world filled with very strange people. But it really is an industry. There are literally thousands of motivational speakers out there.
-
And one for Mars muffins!
-
To the Zig Ziglars and Tony Robbinses and Susan Powters (Stop the madness!) of the world, I say feh! They are bombastic speakers who may offer some entertainment value, but they do not teach you anything. They are good, however, at making you feel very, very, very (that is three verys) inferior. The ones who promote get rich quick schemes are the worst of the lot.
There are a couple of "self-help" authors whose work I admire in which the focus is not on monetary gain but rather on positive human interaction and positive thought and living. They also address the "how" in addition to the "what."
Dale Carnegie, essentially elaborating on The Golden Rule, wrote "How to Win Friends and Influence People," which provides some basic tenets of communication that, if everyone practiced them, would make for a more harmonious world.
Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" has also influenced me, particularly its notion of starting with the end in mind.
-
I saw The Frogs about two decades ago, and there's that flatulent punchline in the opening number as well as a waltz with words by Shakespeare.
The show I saw last night had not a whit of wit, and no poetry to its lyrics. Thames was rhymed with requiems.
But I don't think Jose could guess the two Broadway shows I found more offensive. One was a so-called "new" Broadway musical that had a score made up of old standards. I'd never seen a show like that before, and the mere idea of it horrified me. Since that unhappy night, we've had dozens of so-called "new" musicals made up of old scores (Mamma Mia, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Urban Cowboy) and while I still find this horrifying, nothing has topped my antipathy for the first example I saw. I remember the set had a big, working clock, and I kept staring at it, wondering if some technician was actually slowing down its movement.
The other nadir was a Eurotrash hit that ran for many years and offended me to the core. A lot of people liked it, and they sometimes try to convince me that I misinterpreted what I was seeing. I saw suicide being glorified as a noble sacrifice a parent can make for a child. Two of my best friends lost their mothers to suicide when they were young, and so they show gets stuck in my craw. Ew, I've disgusted myself with my own metaphor.
-
Ok, Noel... I think we could figure out the last musical you mentioned, and probably the one you saw last night. But the second one mentioned is very vague. Any more hints?
-
I've never gone to a "self-help guru" a la Tony Robbins, Susan Powter or anyone...and I don't intend to. I will admit that I've stopped and watched some of Tony Robbins' info-mercials mainly because, well, I think he's nice to look at. ;) As to what he's saying or trying to sell, I have no clew atoll.
Nor do I have a clew as to which shows Noel is referring. Please enlighten me. I'm a dim bulb (at times). ;D I would not, however, lump Smokey Joe's Cafe in with shows like Mamma Mia or Urban Cowboy. Those last two shows are book shows with music from other sources, but Smokey Joe's Cafe is a tribute revue to Leiber and Stoller and it's not supposed to have any kind of plot or story. It's just an evening of their songs presented on stage.
-
I have never paid much attention to the self-help gurus, in fact I thought Susan Powter was an excercise guru...so what do I know!
I think I have a pretty free weekend this weekend so I might get some dvd watching done. I also have to make a few changes to my Kenny Miller interview and my William Reynolds interview...then maybe I can start on Frank Griffin and Van Williams! If I didn't procrastinate so much I would be all caught up with these!
-
I was gonna guess Dracula when I read DR Noel's clue this morning.
Crazy For You and Les Mis?
-
I liked Susan Powter and thought she offered people a method of loosing weight, just like Richard Simmons has done. For the most part I have found motivational speakers get you excited without giving any real answers, and the ones with answers are rather obvious.
Keith purchased the book “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” expecting to be motivated and did exactly the opposite of the books message when he was upset he spent his money on the book. ;D
Sandra what is a futon/bunkbed?
-
Once a year my high school would bring in a motivational speaker to try to get us to work harder in class. It was usually pretty boring, but there was this one Chinese guy who told funny stories about throwing spitballs on the school bus. I'm not sure what he was motivating us to do, but it got me out of math class.
Dear Reader Jane, a bunkbed/futon is a futon with a bunkbed on top. Or bunkbeds with a futon for the bottom bunk. However you want to look at it.
-
I just went to the video store and rented two movies, Chasing Liberty and The Butterfly Effect. I was thinking about taking The Human Stain, with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. Anyone seen it?
It is raining here. Has been raining all day. Totally miserable out! :(
-
Sandra, then the top bunk is a regular bed or does it fold out like a futon?
-
The top bunk is a regular bunk. Only the bottom one is a futon.
-
Thank you. Will you post a photo once you have organized your room? :)
-
I sure will, Jane.
-
I don't know the line of the song or the metre etc but Thames does rhyme with "Ems" anyway. It could work!
TOTD - do see the fascination.
I enjoyed the sequence in Series 2 of "Six Feet Under" where Ruth had enrolled in some such empowerment programme.
-
Here is a photo from DRPANNI's tv show TIGER CRUISE that was in the NY Post. ;D
-
I wrote one part of a trilogy that made up the movie MARTHA, RUTH AND EDIE. Three different stories of young women's lives. The way they bookeneded the stories was to show the women - now older - going to a women's empowerment seminar led by some obnoxious motivational guru. The women, strangers, walk out, meet up in the lobby and tell their stories to each other. The movie is not very good, so I forgot about it when the TOD came up - until I read Tom's comment about SIX FEET UNDER. Go figure.
-
Thanks, Jrand. The article is really not worth reading! It's badly written (although positive about the movie) and is a total SPOILER, giving away the entire story.
The photo is very nice, though.
-
Jrand - How do you take a picture like that and post it here? I have no idea how one does that. (And was there a credit with the photo to include?)
BTW - That's Bill Pullman and Hayden Panettiere in the pic..
-
I mowed my mom's lawn today. Not only was the heat and humidity unbearable, but I also got stung in the forehead by a bee. Ouch!
TOD: I was fairly well immersed in the whole recovery thing in the early 90s, so I came across a good deal of self-help gurus, both good and bad. The unfortunate thing about the good ones was that once they had their initial say in their first book, they were immediately turned into cottage industries with workbooks, seminars, inspirational calendars, mugs and t-shirts. Then, of course, they had to follow up with a second and third book which either simply restated what they had already put forth or went off in a different direction all together (Wayne Dyer is a prime example of this--the author of my favorite self-helper, M. Scott Peck, has also managed to squeeze a few more books out of his The Road Less Traveled.)
A few years ago, I went through a box of self-help books I had accumulated through the years. After examining them and evaluating what they still held for me, I found that there were only four books that I wanted to keep. The rest I dropped off at the Goodwill.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....there was no credit for the photographer, but there was a copyright notice....so I may take the photo down sooner or later.
Also took the article link away....since DRPANNI said it wasn't so hot! She's right it wasn't! :P
-
There's going to be a BLUE MOON tonight! Should be lovely.
A Blue Moon is the second full moon that occurs in the same month, which is very rare. The moon isn't necessarily blue (depending on the tint of your eyeglasses).
I once read that a person should take the opportunity of the blue moon to do something that is out of the ordinary. To eat that rare treat or to call someone they haven't talked to in a long time. I'm trying to think of what I can do tonight. Anyone have any plans?
-
DRPANNI if you right click on a photo you get a list, then you can "Save this photo as..." to your hard drive....then when you want to save it here you can click on the browse function, find the photo on your hard drive and when you click open on your browser window, the url is in the window.
I had to convert this photo though from a bitmap to a jpeg....because jpegs are the easiest to post here....bitmarks can't be posted.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......what can I do? Interesting DTM....never heard of that before, but it is intriguing.
-
It would seem the ideal time to play Mr David Campbell's version of "Once In A Blue Moon" from his "Yesterday Is Now" CD
-
Thanks for the photo info, Jrand. And feel free to take down the photo if there are copyright problems.
-
Jrand - How do you take a picture like that and post it here? I have no idea how one does that. (And was there a credit with the photo to include?)
BTW - That's Bill Pullman and Hayden Panettiere in the pic..
OMG, I didn't recognize that girl. She used to be on the soap Guiding Light. She is absolutely wonderful.
I always post pics like that by right clicking until properties comes up, then copying the address that comes up. Then I think you click on the picture frame logo.
I haven't done it in a while.
-
Dan (the Man) I’m having cold mango soup tonight, not something I would choose on my own. Once on a blue moon, the moon really did appear a light blue. I got a big laugh out of that. :D
Pani I have the TV guide with the good review & the Friday night pick. Disney also put in a full page add. :)
-
Yeah you right click on the pic, then the last item is "properties", you click on that and it will bring up the address. You copy that, paste it here in "reply", then highlight it and click on the picture frame icon (5th on the left bottom).
And presto. Picture.
Or you can save it to your computer. disk and post it that way.
-
Just watched Chasing Liberty. They were in Venice riding the gondolas. Oh, how I'd love to do that!
-
Vanity Post: only one more to page 2!!
-
I assume we are going backwards DR George!
-
Someone beat me to it!

Now I must lunch...it's too early for "dinner" or "supper." But I must eat. And since I just got paid yesterday (yea!), I will go somewhere. But where? ::)
-
It is really annoying when I don’t listen to my instincts. At 7:30 this morning Echo and I left to hike on Mt Ashland before it got hot. As I was leaving I looked at her water bottle (it clips to my waist and has a flip out water bowl) while an inner voice said “don’t take this, there is plenty of water on the hike". I had a strange feeling while I was thinking this, but do I leave it-NO.
Today I finally remembered to take the digital camera, just wish Keith had remembered to charge it. At one point I sat down to photograph the wild flowers. Farther down the trail I noticed I had lost the water bottle. Back I go to find it, not looking at the path but on the side where the bottle would most likely be. I know better than to take my eyes off the trail for long and sure enough I tripped on a rock, went flying in the air and felt as if I were sliding into first base. Fortunately I hit soft dirt as I skid about two feet before coming to a stop. Echo as usual, when I fall, sat on me. :D
I found it interesting that only women I passed on the trail noticed, or commented, I had fallen. I really was covered in dirt. First thing I did when I returned home was throw my clothes into the washing machine.
So now I’m sitting here, fine but feeling a bit sore and wondering why I didn’t listen to myself. ::)
-
I don't know the line of the song or the metre etc but Thames does rhyme with "Ems" anyway. It could work!
The last syllable of requiems may rhyme with London's river Thames, but "requiems" is never accented on the third syllable. Therefore, this is a forced rhyme. As "requiems" is accented on the first syllable, to rhyme it, you'd need a three syllable rhyme. Like the time Mark McGuire (or was it Manny Mota) spoke for all of the Seattle Mariner batters and said "While swinging the bat on deck, we M's/don't like to listen to requiems."
-
Here endeth the lesson for today DR Jane.
-
Wow DR Jane. I hope that you are okay.
But I did laugh when you said the dog sat on you. :)
-
I would not, however, lump Smokey Joe's Cafe in with shows like Mamma Mia or Urban Cowboy. Those last two shows are book shows with music from other sources, but Smokey Joe's Cafe is a tribute revue to Leiber and Stoller and it's not supposed to have any kind of plot or story. It's just an evening of their songs presented on stage.
Point taken. There's a distinction between a songbook revue and a show that just sticks a lot of old hit songs into a newly-written book, like the first of my worsts.
The second of my worsts I've already given enough clues to, a mega-hit Eurotrash popera that glorified parental suicide.
Ever notice that "parental" is an anagram for both "paternal" and "prenatal" - neat, huh?
-
Jennifer we enjoyed CALENDAR GIRLS. It was sad at time but mostly it was cute funny. I’m glad we watched it on DVD so we could back up when we didn’t catch what they said.
Emily did you like it?
-
Requiem is accented on third syllable in some places it seems DR Noel - not a problem in OZ. Diffrence here is whether the word is uses as a noun or an adjective.
-
Thanks Jennifer, I’m okay just feeling slightly stupid and a wee bit sore. Mostly I’m feeling lucky not have done any major damage.
Echo made me laugh too. :)
-
I wonder if Madam Butterfly is "Eurotrash"?
-
Are people just annoyed by these guessing games? Am I sending everyone fleeing for tarnation?
Tonight I'm going to a Broadway play. About a year ago, it was announced that the star of tonight's play would be coming to Broadway playing a famous writer, opposite Judd Hirsch. That never happened, but the star made it to the same theatre (and Hirsch was seen in a different new play this past season at a different theatre).
-
Jane - Glad only your dignity is hurt! And yes, sometimes those "inner voices" need to be listened to. Unless they're telling you to blow someone up. (And perhaps even then,)
-
Requiem is accented on third syllable in some places it seems DR Noel - not a problem in OZ. Diffrence here is whether the word is uses as a noun or an adjective.
Not according to Webster's.
But I thank you. I'm always fascinated to learn of alternative pronunciations in other lands. If I ever set a show in Australia, that requiems/Thames rhyme will be available to me.
-
Time to feed and walk the Wonderdog. My landlords (nice, quiet people) have LOUD guests staying with them this week. My inner voice is telling me to do something nasty to one of the guests who sits by the pool just outside my little guesthouse, screaming full voice as I try to work. >:(
-
Better to have the dog sit on you and not the reverse, dear reader Jane!
We'll take your story for true, Jane, but won't say a word to your Hubby!! A roll in the grass, hey! < wink!>
Now, if the medium is rare, is the message rare too?
Blue moon? Bloody moon, moody blues..... I have no idea what i'm talking about!
-
London IS Eurotrain!!
-
Funny that we don't have the equivalent here!
Should be Americantrash!!
I can think of some but won't give titles away! No way, José!
-
"Better" still : AmericanCaca... Like Caca Cola!
-
François de Paris, next time I will take Keith with me. :o
-
Panni, I forgot you have work to do from your meeting yesterday. Is it about what you expected?
-
Just a "stupid" question:
does accentuation prevails when dealing with singing words, opposite to speaking words, if what i'm typing makes sense!
-
Oh, DR Jane, that was quite a hike! When you said that Echo sat on you I just burst out laughing! LOL! Sorry about that, but I couldn't help myself. I am glad you weren't badly hurt, however!
-
Yes, Jane, I assume it's better to roll in the grass with Keith; that way you can fill up the washing machin! -- excuse my being French.... or my.... Eurotrashing!
-
Just saw that the 1943 German version of TITANIC has been released on DVD. Might be interesting.
I just took a bunch of DVDs down to sell at the used DVD store, so I do not need to buy any more DVDs! But of course I have room now for the next shipment of Bollywood DVDs that are on the way as I write this! LOL!
-
MBarnum you might want to modify your message to me. ;D
-
Panni, I forgot you have work to do from your meeting yesterday. Is it about what you expected?
I expected a lot and got a lot. But at least they were very specific without being autocratic about it. We had a good (three hour!) discussion. And, although it will be hard work, I can do what needs to be done.
The kind of meeting I hate is when they know they don't want what you've given them, but they don't know what they DO want. (Which is very often what happens.)
-
And we're getting very close to...
-
PAGE FOUR!
-
These Salem people really do enjoy the misfortunes of others DR Jane. lol
MBarnum has now rendered this post obsolete!
-
DRJane, Maybe MBarnum was actually saying "Break a leg".
-
MBarnum, too late to modify or others won't know what Tomovoz or Dan (the Man) are talking about. :D
-
Add an n't to MBARNUM's post please.
-
JRand it is much more fun the way it is. :)

Without a love of my own.

We should have a HHW blue moon partay tonight (blue SUN for tomovoz?)...
-
Here's the "soft" trail I fell on. :-\
-
DR Noel, I meant Miss Saigon as the Eurotrash. Of course Kim commits suicide, not Fantine.
It's weird but I LOVE Miss Saigon, it's one of my favorites.
I also love C4U, although you never said if that was your other choice.
-
You have mail DR Jane !
Happy trails to you.
-
Lovely pic Jane.
DR Jennifer - no problem for me enjoying them either.
-
Wildflowers on Mt. Ashland.
-
DR Jane, when I went to the video store, the girl recommended a few movies. She said I absolutely must see "Thirteen" and "Monster". Anyone seen any of those?
She saw "Calendar Girls", but said her mom enjoyed it much more than she did.
So far I'm half way thru "The ButterFly Effect". I am not yet sure what I think about it. It's not what I expected and there is a lot going on. And I'm not sure what is happening.
-
I have emails to answer but they must wait until later. I need to dry my hair and get ready for mango soup at a friend's birthday dinner.
-
Too late! I modified my earlier message to DR Jane regarding her injury, or lack of! LOL! Boy my remputation as a nice guy almost changed with one posting! LOL!
-
Jennifer - I've been told that THIRTEEN is really powerful. A must-see for teens and their parents. Started to watch it a few months ago, but my DVD player went nuts.
-
Does that mean we all have to back and modify or delete?
Another great pic DR Jane. We are enjoying them from here in Oz where of course as DR Panni says, it is a Blue Sun day. Well the sky is blue anyway.
-
An interesting topic for discussion, perhaps... I was just reading the obit for the director of THE BLOB. In it, it talked about David and Bacharach writing the Blob song, uncredited (in the film, that is). They are, of course, credited on JEEPERS CREEPERS. Which leads me to the question... What other famous composers/lyricists have been uncredited on well-known songs, themes, etc?
-
Wish I had some interesting answers to an interesting question.
The Peter & Gordon song "Woman" is credited to Harry Webb. (Cliff Richard's name!) but is a Paul Mc Cartney composition.
I wonder if "Woman" is the only example of a title used by both Lennon and McCartney as "solo" writers.
Guess that is really not the same as being "uncredited" but at least it's a post!
-
I don't think Rachmaninoff was credited anywhere on Eric Carmen's album whence "All By Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" came.
-
DR Jane: Did you ever find the missing watter bottle? (Or have I, again, missed something already stated)?
Rhyming: Requiem/Auntie Em
-
It works for me RLP!
-
Hi all. Sorry to have been E & T (again). I haven't been feeling exactly up to snuff and have been doing a lot of resting.
Jane, I'm so sorry to hear about your spill on the trail. Thank goodness your alright!
I was, however, glad to see your pictures. Your becoming a real pro at taking and posting them!
I have posts to catch up on.
-
Thanks for the pics DRJANE.
Oh my DRPANNI....I have read discussions about your topic...but I don't remember any of them. A lot of that information has been discussed here....hmmmmmmmmmmm
I will say that I DON'T think "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine" are the same song, US courts notwithstanding.
-
Oh and yesterday we got GREAT news about a new Mary Poppins CD release! Thanks....but I forget which DR posted it. Remind me and I will credit YOU!!!
-
DR François of course DR JRand - for things Disney and Andrews (Dame) he is our Man about town with all the news. (Eurotrash lol but we can't have everything!)
-
Have not really listened much and don't have the cover but my mind raced to Londonderry Air when I listened to Josh Groben's "You Raise Me Up" or whatever it is called. There may be a credit!
-
Thank you dear readers JRand53 1/4 and Tomovoz!
I'm sickly vain -- I probably think this song's about ME!! -- and NEED all the credits I can get!
-
There's going to be a BLUE MOON tonight! Should be lovely.
It is, indeed! And quite large!
-
The last syllable of requiems may rhyme with London's river Thames, but "requiems" is never accented on the third syllable.
In the great Casilda-Luiz duet in Act One of THE GONDOLIERS, Sir W S Gilbert has this set of lines:
O bury, bury love that all condemn,
And let the whirlwind mourn its requiem!
-
And der Brucer and I have dined at the Blue Moon a couple of times. The food there is excellent!
-
Merci, Francois!
COMEDY CENTRAL is having a RENO 911 marathon right now!
-
I wonder if Madam Butterfly is "Eurotrash"?
It would depend on what Eurotrash director staged it, doncha think?
-
The legal battle with My Sweet Lord /He's So Fine gave Jody Miller another hit here with her remake of the old Chiffons hit. Thought I should check - #53 in the USA in 1971 - made the top 20 here. Trivia is so important!
-
Have not really listened much and don't have the cover but my mind raced to Londonderry Air when I listened to Josh Groben's "You Raise Me Up" or whatever it is called. There may be a credit!
Oh, London derriere, Tomovoz!! :o
THAT's Eurotrash indeed! ;)
-
Jody Miller! Oh....in the Collectors Choice Music catalog this month:
Jody Miller - a collection of her hits.
The Little Prince - the soundtrack CD.
-
Much as I love Rodgers & Hart's "Blue Moon," I've always preferred Jerome Kern's song from STEPPING STONES:
Once in a blue moon
You will find the right one
Once in a blue moon
Find your dear delight one
And with a thrill you'll know that love is true
Once in a lifetime
When the moon is blue
And there's W H Auden's lyric set to glorious music by Benjamin Britten in PAUL BUNYAN:
Once in a while, the odd thing happens
Once in a while the dream comes true
And the whole pattern of life is altered
Once in a while the moon turns blue
-
"Home Of The Brave" and "He Walks Like A Man" have been difficult to fond for years. Hope they are included JRand. And of course "Queen Of The House" which is sung by many of us as we dust and polish.
-
Oh, London derriere, Tomovoz!! :o
THAT's Eurotrash indeed! ;)
;) :) :D

The second of my worsts I've already given enough clues to, a mega-hit Eurotrash popera that glorified parental suicide.
Here, we have to differ. I never thought that particular suicide was "glorified," quite the contrary from where I sat. It was glorified in it's opera source material, but the ending of the show you're referring to was more horrifying, particularly as the show simply ends with the suicide, leaving it very unclear as to whether the suicide had the effect the character intended.
-
Funny that we don't have the equivalent here!
Should be Americantrash!!
That would be redundant.
-
Hey DR EMILY, when did you say the Amish show is on here? I could not find it in my tv guide.
-
Again thank you François.
It is a good day.
-
"Home Of The Brave" and "He Walks Like A Man" have been difficult to fond for years. Hope they are included JRand. And of course "Queen Of The House" which is sung by many of us as we dust and polish.
Yup TOMovOZ all three of those songs + 20 more!

I am now trying to imagine Madam Butterfly in goth makeup and costume.
Somehow, instead of committing hari kiri, I'm seeing her just getting yet one more piercing.
Changes the whole show, doesn't it! ;)
-
DR JRand: Thank you for the link. I am indeed too lazy to make the effort - and frightened I'll spend more money!
-
I am attempting, once again, to instal a preview version of "1 Click DVD Copy" so that I may test out the software prior to shelling out $40.00! I want to make sure it works...but so far I am not having much luck.
I downloaded it earlier in the month but kept getting error messages when trying to copy...er...make "back-up versions" ;) of some dvds. I uninstalled it and am now giving it another go.
I wish my computer tech buddy Justin hadn't moved to Washinton! Argh.
If all goes well then a certain DR whose birthday is in August will have some nifty DVDrs for his big 54th b'day!
-
Hehehehe!
Sometimes MBARNUM....you need to disable your firewall in order to use software like that. If you are running Norton or anything.
But don't forget to turn it back on!
-
I'm back after a long rehearsal day. Lots to tell you about in the notes. Also, ate a nice dinner and now feel ready to explode from the plethora of foodstuffs.
Beautiful postings today.
-
+ve feedback is always appreciated. I look forward to reading about the day's rehearsel experiences.
-
How wonderful to see TCB back again. I hope that computer behaves enough for you to both read and post. You are missed.
-
It seems that TCB is lurking amongst our yesterdays. Not quite a Happy time reference. Isn't Who's on line an interesting and useful feature ?
-
'tis...but who is online is just as nice as who is off....love them all
-
BK/Jose.....are you going to do any matinees?...I'm a Los Angeles guy without a car... so if you're near a subway/bus stop....Hudson I think I can get to.
-
Dear reader wlajb,
you do sound like a politician, or, to match TOD, a guru! ;)
-
DR FRD....not a politician...just a democrat...yelling at BUSH to GET A LIFE outta politics....<G>...
And Kevin Kline to to sign onto to Glenn Close "A Little Night Music".....but such is horse races.....
-
sorry....my mouse fell on the floor.....YIKES
-
per TOD....we have three day "retreats" at work....and have been subjected to so many "motivational speakers"....I wanna KILL 'em all....at $20,000 a whack
-
My doggie is lying on my foot, my landlords are sitting in the yard sipping wine and invited me to have a glass, the moon is blue. It's a nice night.
-
And one for blue Mahler!
-
Jane: I thought Calendar Girls was too long - it would have been much cuter if they ended the movie with the calendar getting made and fulfilling its goal of buying the couch instead of going into the whole "dangers of fame" rigamarole.
Jennifer: The Amish show should be on Global tomorrow night I believe... I'm not sure when though exactly - probably around prime time
-
I did a google search for "page dance" and this was the best of the results I got:
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%](http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:XHmpk0p3qQQJ:www.beanstalktoys.com/Briarberry%2520Coloring%2520Page%2520Dance.jpg)[/move]
-
I thought blue moons were only in Kentucky. Where is DR Jason. He should know.
-
Next blue mood is like 2007?
-
Every body out in the yard drinking wine.....RIGHT NOW
-
John Fogerty sang about "Blue Moon Nights" on his "Blue Swamp" Cd.
Which of course sort of connects to the sub topic of Plagiarism. I wonder if he has been the only songwriter taken to court for plagiarising himself.
-
Think we only have to be concerend if the the moon is alight with fire and coming to earth at like 200,000 mph....then we DUCK and COVER.....and all's well...(i think)
-
So the moon is a weapon of mass destruction. I remember seeing a flag "flying" there. Should someone invade just in case!
-
My doggie is lying on my foot, my landlords are sitting in the yard sipping wine and invited me to have a glass, the moon is blue. It's a nice night.
But where is the tortoise?
-
I think being hit by the moon would be an interesting way to go. I don't think I'd DUCK and COVER. Just a personal choice, folks.
-
But where is the tortoise?
Sleeping in a corner somewhere. He likes to curl up in odd places for the night. The other night he slept near my window.
-
I'm feeling totally mellow for some reason. It's not the wine - I only had a quarter of a glass. Must be the blue moon.
-
a quarter of a glass?....that's drinking with a TURTLE?
-
Most turtles....drink two glasses or more....don't they?
-
WHEW! Made it.
I have been trying to catch up on all the posts that I have been missing lately, but I don't seem to be able to stay connected long enough to get very far.
I am still trying to figure out what the three worst musicals are that Noel mentioned. I am assuming (a dangerous thing to do) that MISS SAIGON is the Eurotrash, but what are the other two shows? Are they DRACULA and CRAZY FOR YOU? And now I have absolutely no idea what show Noel went to see tonight that stars someone who was supposed to star in a different show at the same theatre, only oppossite Judd Hirsch..... Did I get all of that story correct???
If tonight is indeed a blue moon, it probably means that the moon is having the same kind of computer problems that I am having!
-
I think it was the "nudity" that intrigued us...maybe "Bare"....they were going to to do something somtime...
-
I just came in from my backyard checking out the moon. I said, "Hey." and she said, "Hey back at you." (We had a "thing" a few years back.)
She was artfully covered with chiffony, wispy clouds. I said, "Uh, why aren't you wearing blue tonight?"
And she said, "Why aren't you on a beach somewhere dancing with someone half your age?"
Ouch. Stung twice in one day.
-
dancing on beach with DTM...to old Cole Poter tunes...sung by REAL singers.....<wink> giving you calulator....and lying....<wink>
-
wlajb: As it stands, we're only going to do one matinee, Sunday the 15th of August, so you might want to book that date soon. Unless we have a theater party booking, we've scuttled the matinees in favor of a sixth week (and possibly a seventh if all is going well). Go to plays411.com/whatif and it's a breeze from there.
-
The moon is supposed to be a harsh mistress. (I don't know from personal experience).
-
actually dancing on sand SUCKS....you have to be agressive dancing on sand...or move within like two feet....(don't ask my why I KNOW this)....just envision a piece of glass.....and OUCH
-
thanks bk....if alone...will do the mat.....if I can find a date.....will be there some evening....<G>
-
dancing on beach with DTM...to old Cole Poter tunes...sung by REAL singers.....<wink> giving you calulator....and lying....<wink>
Hmmm..."lying"?
-
I agree with you, dear reader Emily, about Calendar Girls being too long; I kept wandering where the film was heading to....
That Calendar has too many pages!!!
-
Just returned from my evening meriments. TITANIC won Best Production at the awards night, so the director of the show asked several of us back to his house after the ceremony, and I stayed WAY TOO long.
-
The moon is supposed to be a harsh mistress. (I don't know from personal experience).
But she is, oh, so generous under the right circumstances...
-
The turtle does not drink. I think he's a Mormon.
-
BK, once the show opens, do you go every night, or check in once in a while, or never go back, or what?
I've worked for directors that did one or the other of those depending on which director we're talking about.
-
I do not dance in the sand. I once stepped on a lit cigarette in the sand and it HURT. Since then I have not trusted the sand. (Although, when you think about it, the sand is trustworthy. People who throw lit cigarettes in the sand are NOT trustworthy.)
-
Maybe she is only harsh when your interest wanes.
(I shall leave alone "I love a waney night" references).
-
Dear reader Tomovoz, I believe a certain Saddham Moonsen has taken over the moon....Some sort of a weird Guru, I heard...
-
I just watched a really bad short film. The only thing that could have made it worse would have been another half hour.
-
So the moon is a weapon of mass destruction. I remember seeing a flag "flying" there. Should someone invade just in case!
and here I thought that the moon was a harsh mistress. :-[
-
Page Seven kind of snuck up on me. It calls for a SAND DANCE.
-
Page 7: Moon Dancing anyone?
-
Good evening (oh, an "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" reference) on this Night of A Blue Moon.
I have returned from the second in my series of Southwest Chamber Music concerts at the Huntington Museum in San Marino. (That's California, not Europe.)
The program tonight was comprised of Mozart's String Quartet No. 8 in F, K. 168, Britten's String Quartet No. 3, Op. 94 (his last major work) and Mozart again, with the String Quartet No. 21 in D, K. 575.
The last piece was accompanied by an obligato of rather determined crickets. They did not detract from the music; rather, they added to the charm of the evening.
-
Page 7: Moon Dancing anyone?
Could I
just have
one more
moon dance
with you,
my love?
-
I know you didn't ask my advice, Dear BK, but I would urge you to reconsider not doing matinees. I do believe there is a whole audience for a show like What If that would not venture into Hollywood at night but would happily do so on a Sunday afternoon.
Thurs/Fri/Sat eve/Sun matinee is fairly common practice in town.
-
Sand dancing....moon dancing....it's a karma thing. Think we shoud all just watch a Disney Channel movie about a BIG ship......and breath deeply....besides....if anyone is going to be in Venice, CA tomorrow....it's the Festival of Chariots.....always fund.....
-
Since I don't seem to be able to get my computer to cooperate about letting me sign on at times that are more convenient to other Dear Readers, I will just post a couple of questions and hope that I can get them answered somewhere down the line.
MBarnum -- When you did your interview with Van Williams, did you actually meet him in person or was it conducted by telephone? If in person, is he still as attractive as he was when in was The Green Hornet?
Jed -- Did you get the email I sent you last week?
Jane -- Did you ever solve your pet sitter problem? Are we still having a Northwest HHW gathering in August?
Jane (II) -- When I mentioned that my avatar was on the cover of the new theatre brochure for next season, you asked if I could post it. Did you mean the brochure cover, or just a clear copy of the avatar?
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/WandaDuck/batik-moondance.jpg)
Well, it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
-
Could I
just have
one more
moon dance
with you,
my love?
Think I'll stick to Taxi Dancing td. lol
-
Isn't tonight a midsummer night, too? I do feel like an ass.
-
Think I'll stick to Taxi Dancing td. lol
I'm your private dancer. (yes. good to know that TCB is online).
-
The sun won't set......what's with THAT?
-
Next the maid will be doing it with miller's son.....the s**t
-
I'm your private dancer.
"A dancer for money."
Wonderful song by Mr Knopfler.
-
let's petition to have Glenn Close with Kevin Kline....in Night Music...fill in the rest of cast as we go....k?
-
Isn't tonight a midsummer night, too? I do feel like an ass.
But where can you get one at this time of the night?
-
Perhaps a Donkey Serenade might be encouraging.
-
Heeeeee Hawwwwww.....donkey serinade......
-
I like to go to most of the performances - I always feel like I'm part of it, and I find it difficult to stay away - also because I know people who'll be coming. If I were directing a B'way show I probably would stop coming early into the run, but waiver theater is fun in that way - to just be at the theater.
-
well...BK...it's not like you're doing 2,000 performances.....and besides...you have to keep tabs on Jose.....<G>
-
BK/Jose.....are you going to do any matinees?...I'm a Los Angeles guy without a car... so if you're near a subway/bus stop....Hudson I think I can get to.
Right now, the only matinee we have scheduled is currently for our first weekend, so that would be August 14, I believe. Check plays411.com for info.
And since I'm currently taking advantage of the public transportation system... What I've been doing is just taking the Metro-Red Line to the Hollywood/Highland stop, and then walking down Highland to Santa Monica, take a left, and I'm at the Hudson (6539 Santa Monica Blvd.). So far, it's been about a 10-15 minute walk from the Metro stop. I like walking, so it's not really that far a distance to me. -Although I'm finding out that a lot of people out here in LA think any walk longer than three blocks is a "long walk". ??? Otherwise, since the Hudson Theatre is on Santa Monica, the #4 (and 304) bus runs quite regularly all day and all night, so... you could catch an evening show if you'd like. Additionally, our total running time should be just at two hours, so you'd be getting out at 10:00, which is not too late, I would guess. And you can also catch the #156 bus to the corner of Santa Monica and Highland and walk from there. -Or you could always check www.metro.net -
Can you tell I like the public transporation system out here? Yes, it is prone to running late, but what public transportation system - in the US, at least - runs on time? And, for now, at least, every place I've been needing to get to has been about a mile walk (or a bus ride) from a Metro stop, so I've been doing fine without a car so far.
-
two little bits....one or TWO big things.....and Jose will be ham and cheese on RYE......WRY......or.....oh....never mind.....he'll still play a mean piano......<wink>
-
welcome to public trans.....in LA.....Jose....<G>.....<----- lives on westside......what's life like west of 405?????
-
actually meant on EAST of 405.....but still figuring out what it's like WEST of 405.....<G>...go figure
-
Well, m'lady moon has completely concealed herself under cloud cover and I've finished off the last of the wine, so I'm off to bed to see what kind of midsummer's night dream I'll have.
Good night, y'all.
Good night, moon.
-
I saw every single performance of ROUND TRIP at the Ventura Court Theater because my DD was in it.
-
Another Page. Wow!
-
Do DD performances count? <G>
-
that's like buying carrots at a farmer's market....or something.....like a vested interest....or something.....on brainwashing an offspring.....to make a movie offshoot....
-

-
I was very fortunate today. No sooner did the in-laws arrive for a visit than I had to go to work.
Tra-la and hoo and ray.
It turns out that the grandlads and the dogs managed fairly well together. Marty, the Labraball, was a little unnerved by William, the four-year lad, and growled at one point. And it took William a little time to realize that Buster wanted to play.
I'm bothered by the seven-year, Alex, and his tendency to want to escape into whatever he can, games or computers or television, rather than face the world around him, particularly when it involves having his parents around. The parent duo's lack of caring for each other is scary, but Alex's isolation is outright scarier.
-
Early to work tomorrow, for a full day. I must wuss.
-
I went to DQ for my late lunch. I ate too much, but it was good. After that, I came home and took a two hour nap (I needed it), then went to my parents'. They had a couple friends visiting and were having a barbecue. I only ate dessert...a Boston cream pie that I bought from a grocery store. I just realized it, but I didn't buy the Boston cream pie in honor of the DNC that was just held in Boston...it may have been subconscous, but not deliberate. ::)
After that, I stopped at Fred Meyer and bought "The Manchurian Candidate" for only $9.99 (which I just taped last night off of PBS!) and the Raymond Burr version of "Godzilla." I think I want to get the original Japanese version of it when it's released (if it's not already released). Now I'm just waiting for the changing of the notes!
-
And I just started listening to Donald's radio show. I don't think I'll last for the entire show. I'll probably have to finish it in the morning...hopefully it won't change to next week's episode before I get a chance to hear it all!
-
But I, I took the sweet life and never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet.
I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost to much to be free.
Hey, Lady, I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me! :'( :'(
Bad lyric to welcome August!!!!
-
Jack, what's that from??
