Title: THE SHIPPING NEWS AND OTHER TORRID TALES
Post by: bk on December 10, 2010, 12:07:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were torrid and told tales, but not the tale of The Randy Vicar and The Lime Rickey, and now it is time for you to post until the torrid cows come home.

TOD:

DVD: "Christmas in Connecticut," "The Pillars of Earth"

CD: Carols for a Cure, any volume; A Broadway Christmas; A Hollywood Christmas, Brett Barrett's Christmas album

MP3: Mel Torme

Car CD: "The Shallows," by Nicholas Carr, disc 7 or 8

And the new Pat Conroy book on reading has come in at the library. I figure that will consume any free time this weekend. Not that there's much free time.

I love Eyes Without a Face - which I purchased after it was first mentioned here.  Most intriguing.  Also one of my first reviews featured in Scarlet Street - back when it was - and back when I was still asked to contribute.

If people get tired of SPIDER-MAN talk taking up space on here, just say so.

On the other hand, if people prefer that the SPIDER-MAN posts be shorter but want more of them to increase the number of postings on a given day, let me know that too.  :)

Having said that:  :)

Jose - Did you really mean what you said when you said:

"Since it has been in development for so long, why isn't the book in much better shape? Why were so many of the flying stunts still being developed and worked on? -Remember, the show was supposed to open in February.

Then again, a lot of shows that had been in development for years(!) weren't ready once they started previews on Broadway."

------------

In case you did mean it, of course, as has been pointed out over and over, the flying stunts were stunning and working great and (at least by all accounts) as safely as any other big musical by the second preview on December 1.

As to the book, I think you know you never know whether a book is totally working until it's playing in front of an audience.  For example, look at this year's (much deserving) Pulitzer winner NEXT TO NORMAL, which is a much lower-tech show in the scheme of musicals.   It had been in development by the writers Yorkey and Kitt since BMI workshop presentations of a short version in the late 1990's, and the book was still being worked on (though very promising to many people) when you and I saw it at an early preview off-Broadway at Second Stage in spring 2008, it continued to be worked on at Arena Stage in fall 2008 even after having gotten reviewed in New York, then came triumphantly into New York winning loads of awards and becoming a financial and artistic hit.

Good morning, all! I slep[t late because I wanted to and could. Outside of my bath and getting dressed, I've mostly wandered around the apartment, sipping coffee and listening to big band Christmas arrangements. After I make the bed and tidy the apartment, I will head off to the NYPL Theatre Collection before I head down to 23rd Street to see my dentist at 2 pm.

I have little else to report. I'm still pondering my Christmas shopping lists; although everything is purchased for shipment to Ohio, I've still not decided what to give my goddaughter Charlotte and I really cannot afford to send DR MBarnum John Abraham, even if I combine Christmas and birthday gifts into one package.

TOD:
   DVD: Damn those Netflix items!
CD: Christmas Swing, Christmas on the Bandstand, Christmas collectons by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Joan Baez, Perry Como
VCR: possible gifts for DR MBarnum

DR Jose, thanks for posting that poor excuse from those idiots in the midwest for embarrassing themselves publicly at Elizabeth Edwards' funeral. I could be big and say I hope they get theirs in the next world but I'm petty and mean and I hope the asses die painfully and soon. People that stupid should be terminated before they can breed.

Good morning everyone.

I had a lovely day yesterday at Sardi's, where the League of Professional Theatre Women was holding it's award luncheon.  The honorees were Chita Rivera, Lynn Nottage, and Kamilah Forbes.  They all spoke so eloguently.  Wonderful to see a room filled with so many successful women.

And in the bad news dept., I just got this from the Miami University Libraries:

Like other units at Miami and libraries at many other colleges and universities, the Miami University Libraries are contending with a difficult budgetary environment. At the time of writing, Miami has reduced its annual budget by $20 million and is currently planning additional reductions in excess of $40 million.

The Libraries continue to serve our students and faculty, although with significant reductions of staff (around 20%). Over the past year, we have looked for ways to realize efficiencies by combining service points and even eliminating and reducing some services. While some of these changes have been transparent to our clientele, others have been noticeable.

This is why they can no longer accept books from me, even if I send them a pristine copy and the copy already on their shelves is in tatters: no more multiple copies!

DR FJL - I'm not sure what I meant last night. I think my mind was still processing Marie Osmond's "Broadway Medley" which opened with "Some People" and closed with "Don't Rain On My Parade". ;)

Seriously...

I know that shows take time to develop. And I'm also fully aware that until that material is tried out in front of an audience, one never knows just how well it work or not work.  I guess what I was trying to say is that since the production team of Spider-Man has been sort of "open" about just how much money they've spent so far on the show - about how much they spent even before rehearsals started - that can't help but make a good chunk of potential audience members out there think that it is "done".  -And since the show is attracting people who may not normally attend Broadway shows - fans of U2 and comic books - they could be walking into the theater thinking it was like a movie.  A finished product. And then when you add the whole "wireless-ed" element - Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc. - well, word gets around for better or worse.

For an investment of $65million, it seems to me a lot of people are looking for a huge tax write-off or unrealistically hoping to see a return on their investment. If this show tours, like CHITTY-CHITTY-BANG-BANG, the effects will be simplified, as DR Laura can attest to the flying car on tour, but it's got to be a hit to get the run to validate the tour.

I've seen lots of high-bidget movies where I've thought, another million and they could have fixed the screenplay. I have no urge to see SPIDERMAN, but I heasr the book is poor and the score is worse. Perhaps Ms Taymor is only capable of working her magic on an aready established libretto wherein the parameters are already set, like Gozzi's THE GREEN BIRD, Disney's THE LION KING, TITUS ANDRONICUS, etc. She wouldn't be the first director on Broadway who couldn't develop a piece even if she had the instructions in her hand.

So it seems.  I wonder who will play Bobby Sherman?

I also have never mentioned it is reported later in the book that when Sal was not bringing in the big money anymore....of all those he helped on the way up - Mr Sherman is the only one who paid back any significant amount of money.

I certainly enjoy reading the Spiderman posts, yea and nay (or nea).  One must say, however, that the majority of shows that used to play the great Rialto did not develop for ten years or five years.  Some did, of course, but most were written and up in front of an audience within a year.  I think it was better like that - less time to become delusional about the material, and, of course, no workshops, no readings, no inviting friends who clap you on the back and tell you not to change a thing.  No asking for notes from friends and then ignoring them.  It's just a different world now.

Well it's only breakfast with Santa. But I"m sure she'll be excited.  When she entered my sister had to explain to her that she probably wouldn't win.  But when I put the ballot in I could see in the box. And there weren't that many entries (not sure if they emptied it each day). So I thought maybe she had a 50% chance to win (assuming that they did not take them out each day). I can't wait till my sister tells her.

It is Friday.

The Boxes of Carrie - that is the title of a new Stephen King novella.

I wonder if Stephen King knows (or at least, has been told) that the complete soundtrack is finally being released.

I feel like a lunatic. I keep "refreshing" my library's page for a certain book I'm waiting for. It is the final book in a series i love. And they book is in processing (it came out on tuesday and they got it yesterday). I really want to go pick it up later. Fingers crossed that they can process it today (it usually takes about a day).

A Question for BK (even though it's Friday).  You wrote in today's notes:

I also got the good news that the three UK cast albums I mentioned the other day have cleared and we’re definitely doing them early next year, hopefully by the end of January. I think all three will make show collectors very happy.

Now that things are official...can you give some hints?? :D

I have that on CD. I love the show.  I love Henry Fieldng's comedy "Rape Upon Rape" as much, but I do think the editorial job on the book for "Lock Up Your Daughters" improves much of Fielding.

I had a nice day with my family.  Of course they all acted like nothing happened, so I just went with it.  It was good to see Gabe.  We all went out to lunch and then I headed back home.  They are expecting a blizzard later tonight and we are going to have 1-2 inches of snow with up to 45 mph winds.   I will say just spending a few hours with the family was about right.

Thanks Laura.  I'm really glad I didn't stay there for the blizzard though.  They are going to get 4-8 inches of snow with 45 mph winds.   We're supposed to get 2-4 with the same winds.   Driving will be pretty much out of the question tomorrow.

Maybe they're smart to go while the going is good. I love the series but I do have it all on DVD.

I am thankful to have several past seasons yet to watch, since I only started watching it late last season.

And it it did arrive, I hope that the manager is still downstairs so that I can retrieve it from the mail room.

Glad you like it!  The NYC premiere was at the Criterion followed by an anniversary party at the Waldorf Astoria.....looks like the Kettners went to the movie, those tickets are gone from the folder - but the anniversary party card is still there.

You almost got that when you came to Indiana in April - but I decided it would be more fun as a birthday prezzie!

The alcoholic transient that started the fire this summer which destroyed 11 houses has been acquitted. :o  He wisely waived his right to a trial by jury.  While the judge has no doubt the guy started the fire he stated that prosecutors could not prove reckless endangerment beyond a reasonable doubt.

The accused has said ""All I know is I woke up, and there was a fire right down by my feet. And I woke up, and there was fire. And I tried stomping it out, I couldn't get it to go out, so I walked off and found some girl with a cell phone."

BK wrote: " No asking for notes from friends and then ignoring them.  It's just a different world now. "

I've felt this at times - why ask and then not do it?

But I realize that if I ask three people for advice and sincerely mean that I want ALL of their input, I then really have to balance the advice of all three people, and at times they're irreconcilable.    It doesn't mean the input wasn't seen as valid, or that the request of all three or five wasn't sincere.

And very often, with lyrics, people will say this line doesn't work for me, I believe them, but can't come up with something better.   it makes no sense to change something just to avoid hurting someone's feelings that their advice wasn't taken if the writer can't come up with a better solution, does it?

I don't know why but I am so happy. I took my niece on Sunday to ride the Christmas train and so she could bring in her picture to Santa. There was a contest where 30 kids get to have breakfast with Santa. My sister just called and my niece won. :)

Because it is exciting news. :)

When my niece got home from school my sister called me and told me to pretend I didn't know.

Then 2 minutes later the phone rings.  "Auntie, do you know what? I'm having breakfast with Santa!"

I was so mad earlier today that I lost my appetite (and that is rare for me) :)

I don't get why my library only loses my reservations when it's a book I'm dying to read.

There is a book that is the final book of a series that came out this week. Since my library has not currently computerized suggestions I know that it happens that sometimes the reservations get lost.

So since I reserved this book 6 months ago and since I have been waiting to read this book I went to my library last week to verify that they had my reservation and to find out what place I was in for the book.  She found it and told me i was first.

So I keep checking my library's website every hour. And they got the book yesterday and it was able to be taken out today.

So I look in my account. And not only am I not first but the book does not even show up in my account. And they gave it to someone else.

So I call and am put on hold for a long while. They can't even find my reservation.

Finally they find it and say i reserved it June 10th and some other unknown person reserved it June 2nd and they took it out 15 minute after it was processed. Does this even make sense? I doubt anyone else is as obsessive as I am. And where did this reservation magically come from? It wasn't there last week (or it was misplaced).

I know it's only a book. But I've spent all week reading about other people reading this book.  If my library had told me I was second or twentieth I would have accepted it. But to tell me I am first (I would normally always be first for a book I reserved 6 months ago unless it was hugely popular) and then have me checking and checking. And then for me to go there and they have the reservation. And then today suddenly it was lost ... well I hope this person is a fast reader.

Just a little bit of snow here and a couple inches there.  Now Estherville is supposed to get 10-14 inches of snow and we're up to 6-8.  Much better to be at home.

Oh, I'm not saying you should make changes just because someone tells you something, but I am saying that if one solicits opinions one should at least weigh them - I may not agree with a note someone gives me about something but what I do do is try to understand where the note is coming from and why something isn't working for them - thinking about that might lead me to understand what they're at least getting at and having that knowledge may lead me to a better place in terms of making a fix.

As to lyrics - when I was doing The Roxy, I was sort of merciless with the lyricist because frequently I felt the lyric wasn't doing its job or that a character wouldn't sing certain lines - whatever - and I pushed really hard and she ALWAYS came up with something better - not always easy, but when she got it she was so happy and knew she'd made magic - you have to be willing to just go for it, even if it's difficult.  There are times when I've written a lyric when it would be so simple to do a false rhyme to get a laugh or make a point but I cannot do it - and I will sometimes literally drive myself insane but you know what - I eventually come up with something that gets the laugh and keeps the craft intact.  But, for me anyway, that's the fun of it - being shoved up against the wall with something that's seemingly impossible to solve and then not only solving it but solving it really well.
