I noticed that bk watched the FOLLIES clips last night, and I share his reaction to them.
Unfortunately I did not see the original production, but, I have thankfully seen ONE production of the original book. The production was at Carnegie Mellon's Kresge theater shortly after the rights had become available, and long before I began working at CMU; the mid seventies, I would say. There are three productions done at CMU of which I have nearly virtual recall, FOLLIES is one, followed by late 80s/early 90s productions of NICHOLAS NICKELBY and THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE.
Seeing the opening clip on youtube last night, I was reminded that the CMU production didn't veer very far from the original's staging and conceits. Simply a stunning production, beautifully staged even if the cast was too young by decades.
