Exactly what I siad about the last section. Of ALL the people to run into going back, the man HAD to be THAT man. Argh!
Thanks for that Matt.  Glad it is not just me.

I would have been much happier if the story teller had just gone and found the boy in Pakistan with his "Uncle" to whom he dedicated the book.
The whole sling shot incident was just too much - as if the kid would have had that given his situation! And it was oh so easy to escape back to Pakistan.

When that was over, I watched DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER on Blu-ray. Neither of the first two DIE HARDS gained much over their sDVD counterparts on the way to Blu-ray. Starting with DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE, however, the differences in the two are night and day.

The Blu-ray did, however, up the ante in the sound department using a DTS-HD MA audio mix that was quite spectacular.

Yes, that definitely caused me to lower my score a bit for the content of the film though it was quite involving. A fine film but not the great one it could have been.

TOmorrow I'll be back at the ole reviewing stand doing Criterion's BEFORE THE RAIN. As I suspected, there are A LOT of special features to get through, and as I've never seen the film either, I'll be quite busy with it all day.

I'll likely watch more episodes of THE OFFICE while I cook and eat lunch, but after that, the Criterion will take priority.

Time for Bollywood movie # 2 for this weekend, the recent hit film RACE (2008) starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, and Katrina Kaif....quite an interesting movie revolving around a group of people in the horse racing circle and what happens when greed, lust, backstabbing and musical numbers combine!

For those who've enjoyed the first two volumes of The Fugitive, the third street dated last Tuesday - do NOT purchase it - all the music - I'm talking about the dramatic underscore - has been removed and replaced by different music played on a synth.  There is a complete brouhaha going on about it.

Cedar Rapids is still under water, but Iowa City is really in trouble.  I am so sad to see that Hancher Auditorium is flooded.  I worked there as a stage hand during college. The Art Museum is flooded as are most of the Art bulidings.   I did hear that a Mack Truck pulled up to the Art Museum to move things out.  They had some really great pieces in that collection. I hope they got them out.

One of the apartments I lived in in Coralville is underwater.  The library is closed and apparently they are trying to move books but have said that the books on the lower floors aren't rare and can be replaced if necessary.

The river there isn't supposed to crest for a few days so it's going to get worse. This is so sad.

A dozen UI buildings flooded
Brian Sharp • Iowa City Press-Citizen • June 14, 2008

The University of Iowa said today that one-eighth of campus is flooded, with waters as high as 3- to 4-feet above the main floor in many buildings on the arts campus.

In all, a dozen university buildings are locked down and listed as flooded, including Hancher Auditorium, the Museum of Art, the Iowa Memorial Union and North and Mayflower residence halls.

UI officials had hoped to complete flood preparation, including all sandbagging efforts before a severe band of thunderstorms moved in tonight.

University Hospitals, in a decision made yesterday, is only accepting critical patients. The hospital went to a back-up boiler this morning after water overtook the campus power plant, near the Burlington Street bridge. Loss of the plant is mostly affecting research facilities and causing a loss of hot water and reduced level of air conditioning. Critical research projects already have been relocated. Two temporary boilers, one on each side of the river, should be in place in the next 48 or 72 hours.

Thanks FJL, it just feels really strange to be here where everything is fine and know what is going on not that far away. I'm thankful, but also have a bit of what I can only call survivor guilt.

RACE was a very good movie! Fortunately so, because DR JRand57 will be receiving a copy of his own very soon due to the fact that I shopped at Indiaweekly.com a few too many times during their "70% off Shock and Awe sale" and I ended up accidently ordering the DVD (and a couple of other titles) twice  :-[

As the saying goes, my shopaholicism is your gain! LOL!

I just watched an Israeli film on the Sundance Channel titled THE BUBBLE which was excellent - I recommend it, a search at Amazon will give the details so you can see if you might be interested in it.

I am rather amazed at the emotional impact of the film.  It may have been discussed here, but I don't remember....it is a film from 2006.
