Well, you've read the notes, the notes were endless, and now it is time for you to post until the parading cows come home.

This board is moving like molasses.  I do hope that we don't have a problem on the 4th of July weekend.

Topic of the Day:  the typical stuff of watching morning TV shows (I can't really be specific.  It was too long ago ;)) and just hanging out at home...usually.  Sometimes, my sister and I might get together with friends, but not all the time. :)

Such a lay-a-bout!

From the time I was 10 Saturday's were usually a full work day; delivering groceries and gardening until my high school years, and then working in a Hospital lab. (If work wasn't too busy, I could sneak away for a Saturday matinee. I would plot out my weekends to maximize my movie viewing - look for double features and strategize transportation; nearby theatres I could reach by bike, those located more city-center required using the bus/trolly/subway system. On a well planned Sunday I could hit two different double features! Sometimes free Saturdays were spent going to center-city and brousing Leary's used book store and cruising the City Parks.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I think I was into cartoons at one point and time, but... ???

I started piano lessons when I was nine-years old, so Saturday mornings for me consisted of heading over to Mrs. Young's house for lessons at 9:00am.  After the lesson, my mom and/or dad - depending who drove me that day - would usually go grocery shopping, and I would tag along.  -I guess I really had no choice in the matter.

When I was in high school, my piano lessons moved to the middle of the week - as well as to a different teacher and a different city - so Saturday mornings usually were spent watching the cooking show line-up on PBS: "Cooking with Julia", "In Julia's Kitchen", "The Frugal Gourmet", Molly Katzen's show, etc.  Then I'd usually stay in front of the TV for "This Old House".

In college, I loved the morning line-up on the local public radio station, WCVE.  "Car Talk", "My Word", "My Music", a locally produced 20th Century Classical Music show, some big band shows... Just lots of entertaining and usually educational radio programming that would sometimes keep me listening in bed until 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon.

Statue of Liberty's Crown May Open for the First Time Since Sept. 11

NEW YORK —
The National Park Service is considering reopening the Statue of Liberty's crown for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to documents a congressman released on Independence Day.

The park service requested bids last month to study what it would take to safely open the iconic headpiece to the public, according to documents released by U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat from New York.

Liberty Island, where the statue is located, was closed after the terrorist attacks. The statue's base, pedestal and lower observation deck reopened in August 2004, after a $20 million effort to enhance fire safety.

But the crown and its interior observation deck, which soar about 265 feet (81 meters) above New York Harbor, remained closed because the Park Service said there was no way to evacuate them safely in an emergency. The narrow spiral staircase that leads up to the crown doesn't comply with fire and building codes.
Visitors are now limited to the statue's 154-foot-tall (47 meters) pedestal.

Question for DR's with "good ears":

In last evening's Capital Celebration, Brian Stokes Mitchell sang "This Is My Moment" and "Impossible Dream" - how many total key changes did he navigate?

And who was The Lady in Red whose penultimate note must have been an H Sharp!

der Brucer

And who was The Lady in Red whose penultimate note must have been an H Sharp!

First of all, the song is correctly titled, "This Is The Moment" - from Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde.  ;)  -And he was singing the latest "official version" of the song which has the bridge.  However, the playout was different from what I'm used to hearing, but it was a concert arrangement so that could be the reason for the almost-discrepancy.

As for the number of key changes, there was only one modulation in each song.  The one in "This Is The Moment" is written into the music.  The one in "The Quest (The Impossible Dream)" was interpolated for Stokes when he starred in the revival of Man of La Mancha.  It is not in the original version of the song.  -And, frankly, shouldn't be there.

*I do have to say, I was a bit off put by Stokes renditions of both songs.  They just seemed a little too riffy and nightclub-acty to my ears.

As for the "Lady in Red", she was/is the wonderful soprano, Harolyn Blackwell.   -Her rendition of "Summertime" on Simon Rattle's recording of Porgy & Bess is one of the slowest - if not the slowest - versions on record.  And it's exquisite!  When I had the good fortune of working with her a few years ago, I asked her why she chose such a slow tempo: "Chile! Have you ever been in Charleston in the summer?  In that heat, you'd be moving slow too."  :)

And I think her penultimate last note was a high D.

**Oh, and the chorus last night sounded a bit rough around the edges too... And/or they were mic'd too closely.

TOD

I would visit my grandparents. I would stay over Friday night and watch cartoons as they had a color television set. Back then there was only the three networks and their mornings were chocked full of programming. Their two Canadian networks never really had programs for kids.

Loads of memorable cartoons and was shocked to learn that only a handful of episodes were actually produced and they just reran and reran them.

When I turned 14 I usually took the bus to the Lucerne movie theater (and others) and watched double bills of films.

A little older I discovered a Grindhouse cinema that had triple bills and they charged (when I first went) $1.25. The only downside was when DOM, who would try to sit next you.

-Now I'm just hoping that the cast members who are on the first flight out - they're leaving momentarily - actually made it to their gate on time.  The shuttle was a couple of minutes late getting to the hotel, and the drivers were a bit shocked at the amount of luggage they had to transport.  They did have a trailer hitched to the one of the vans, so that made things easier, however, we had to make sure we all put our luggage in in reverse order of terminals/flights.  We pulled up to the terminal at 5:30, and then the mad dash began!  Most of them had excess and/or overweight baggage - you need a lot of clothes for six months at sea! - and since most of them are from England, Australia and Canada, that's bound to cause some delays in the check-in process.

*And then there are some cast members who are flying out later this morning.  Some are even flying out individually.  I just hope that there are no weather delays in Houston, Salt Lake City and Phoenix, especially since they will only have three to fours after they land to board the ship before it sails out of the Seattle.

**And, alas, one of the lead singer's paperwork was still delayed, so he's stuck in Ft. Lauderdale for a few more days until everything clears.  Hopefully, he'll be able to fly to Alaska and join them mid-cruise.  :-\

Does he need a tour guide. I can take him places he's never been. The places that are not on the tour guide map.
