Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both crunchy and chewy, and now it is time for you to post until the crunchy and chewy cows come home.

Open up my copy "Kritzer Time" to page 317 and, if you look at it in just the right light, you can still see where tears once dotted the page.

Saturday morning greetings!  So what am I doing up at this hour?  My Cleopatra couch was killing my back, so I decided to "get vertical" for a while.  I'd rather be asleep.

Tomorrow is the day of the Tony Awards Show!  That will be fun!  I should print out my ballot and start with my predictions.....even though everything I know about ANY of the shows, I learned here on HHW....for the MOST part.

Tomorrow is also the first round of auditions for SINGING IN THE RAIN, which I will be attending.

Good morning, all! I'm having breakfast with Susanna Moross Tarjan, daughter of wonderful composer Jerome Moross, this morning. I haven't seen her in a while, and it will be nice to catch up.

After that, I'm off to Toyland for several projects, and I believe I'll be there most of the day, unless the heat drives me out.

Last night, I really enjoyed La Fille du Regiment, but the end of the opera seemed rather abrupt to me. With its huge "Salute To France" in Act Two, I can see why Lily Pons had such a hit with it at the Met in the 1940s.

When it was over, I began Strauss' Der Zigeunerbaron, which was filmed in Hungary in 1975 and looks glorious. I got as far as the Act One Finale before crashing. I'' watchthe rest tnight.

TOD: cheese? Put it on a cracker and I'll at least taste it.

My favorite cheese?

The church across the street began at 7:30 this morning doing car washes for a fund raiser. Children of the folks doing the car wash have lined the streets this morning beating drums and screaming at the tops of their voices to get patrons.

I was already up and reading the newspaper when the screaming started, but I'll bet many of the folks in the condo across the street were mightily irked by all that noise so early on a Saturday morning.

It took them about an hour to run out of vocal steam and stop.

What I watch today and tonight will be determined by what comes in the mail today. My first Deep Discount mega-order should be here today, and if it is, I may enjoy some MURDER SHE WROTE episodes.

If the Criterion review discs come today, I'll likely start on one of them tonight though I won't finish it until tomorrow since it's going to have many bonus supplements.

I have THE UNTOUCHABLES on Blu-ray waiting for viewing, too.

I am no cheese connoisseur, so I have very little to add to the topic of the day. I like just about all cheese that I've tried, but I tend not to like as much the heavier, bitter ones.

As for the Topic of the Day...

YUM!!!!

As for favorites - way too many to list - however...

I remember a "dessert" of a chunk of a true Parmigiano-Reggiano that had been drizzled with some aged(!) balsamic vinegar.  Truly delicious, and sooooo much more than just "cheese" (drizzled with some aged (expensive) balsamic vinegar).

I like Cheddars, in general, but tend to prefer the Extra Sharp stuff.

As for a Cheese Recipe, well...

My favorite Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Provolone on Rye (seeded).

I also remember an incredibly simple recipe for "Cheese Crisps" from Natalie Durpree (who I guess was the "original" Paula Deen).

-Take a brick of cheese.
-Cut off 1/4-inch thick slices of cheese.
-Place slices on a non-stick cookie sheet.
-Place in a 350 degree oven.
-Cook until "crisp".

It's basically an oven-version of Frico Crisps which are usually done with Parmigiano-Reggiano and/or Pecorino Romano.  -Just grate some cheese into a nonstick skillet, and cook over low heat until crisped.  Just the cheese, and nothing but the cheese.

BK, as I mention in my review of Mannix, listen to the abominable (though to be fair, long pre-ProTools) edit of the music over the final credits on each episode.  Yikes!

DS Zach's best friend is a lad named Max, whose step-Daddy works for Nick Park (some of Park's stuff is done here in Portland at Will Vinton Studios, though that's not widely advertised).   He has some cool models at their house resting upon the mantle.

I thought of BK yesterday whilst watching the execrable Nickolodeon "film" 'Roxy Hunter and the Mystery of the Moody Ghost.'  The young girl playing Roxy, Aria Wallace (who is evidently being groomed to be the next Miley Cyrus), is completely and utterly incomprehensible throughout the movie.  Does no one know how to speak properly anymore?

I'm here at Chelsea Studios taking advantage of the free wireless while he takes a dance class. It's he who should be taking advantage of the free wireless so he gets used to using the computer before he heads off to Wisconsin. It's not hard to figure out but since we don't have wireless at home he needs to know how to log on and off, etc. He has a little more than a month to play with the laptop and wireless so he has time.

Hello, everyone.

I had a hellish week--Friday the 13th started on Monday for me. I won't go into the gory details, but I'm still feeling stressed from it all. I tried to post here yesterday, but Windows decided to shut itself down. I took that as not a good omen.

Marvelous Matt is here again, repairing the walls and ceilings from one of the two major leaks, as well as doing some restoration to my wood floors. Thankfully, it's Matt doing the work; I don't think I could bear to put up with anyone else at this point.

I caught up on yesterday's posts, but that is all. So,
JRAND, add me to your list of CD purchasers.
Recovery vibes to GINNY.
Congrats to JOSE.

My brain is mush, so that is all.

Just a question and need some information:  If we did decide to see the revival of South Pacific which is currently sold out for the week we are there, for information purposes, would it be best to use the concierge at the hotel or go through an online ticket broker?  And if the answer is the ticket broker which one would be the better ones, if any?

Well...  My friend who invited me to the Tony Awards dress rehearsal tomorrow morning, just invited me to go to some pre-Tony cocktail reception tonight as well as a performance of August: Osage County.  -It's one of those VISA/Tony Awards packages.  He was actually going to treat his mother to all the fun and festivities this weekend, but she, apparently, at the last minute decided just to go to the awards ceremony, so...

Just a question and need some information:  If we did decide to see the revival of South Pacific which is currently sold out for the week we are there, for information purposes, would it be best to use the concierge at the hotel or go through an online ticket broker?  And if the answer is the ticket broker which one would be the better ones, if any?

Check the LCT site on between Sunday and Monday afternoons - that's when the "supposedly" release any unclaimed house seats for the week for public sale.

As for ticket brokers... Eh... Try the concierge at your hotel first since their mark-up is regulated.  Places like StubHub can and do charge exorbitant fees.

DR Ben - If you happen to check in again, please say HI for me to the girls from Binder Casting.  Today is a Lion King call if I'm remembering correctly, and/or an open call for the kids for the Mary Poppins tour.  -If anything, at least say HI to Jenn Rudin for me.  ;)

I know that isn't true, and I realize this would be for the tour, but it just seems like there have been several MP kid auditions.

TOD - I like cheese a lot more than someone battling cholesterol issues should.  One of our pizza choices last night when Rob and Mary Linda were here was thin crust Tuscan Six-Cheese from Papa John's:

Mozzarella
Parmesan
Romano
Asiago
Provolone
Fontina

Not as overwhelming as it sounds - it's delicious!

GAPERON (http://www.tapino.com/newsletter/heck/gaperon_cheese.html)

Quote
Gaperon is a cow's milk cheese that dates back to the Punic Wars (264-146 B.C.) from an area of France that wasn't even France at the time. It is a small white cheese flavored with pepper and garlic.

Originating in the French region of the Limagne plain in the Auvegrne district, near the middle of the country, Gaperon has been made and enjoyed for centuries.

Made with partially skimmed pasteurized or unpasteurized cow's milk and at times buttermilk, Gaperon cheese is formed into baseball sized dome-like shapes with flat bottoms that look like little igloos. A very pale off-white colored exterior may be somewhat fuzzy from being inoculated with a stain of penicillium mold (like Brie). This fuzzy or dry rind covers the inner matte white paste of this cheese that is soft and buttery in consistency. The soft pressed curd of the cheese is blended with bits of garlic and cracked peppercorns, formed into it's igloo shape and then allowed to cure. As a unripened cheese the cheese is very soft and the flavor is somewhat tart. However, as it matures the cheese becomes firmer while the added garlic and pepper enhance it, providing an appealing and distinct flavor to this variety of cheese. The result is a cheese with a robust flavor that is perfect as a snack or as an appetizer.

Holy smokes.  I stopped by my new favorite used bookstore and did more trading.  And he brought in a little item he thought I might be interested in - and boy, he was correct.  That little item was a first edition of The Music Man.  And a pretty primo one at that (The Music Man is rarely seen in any sort of collector condition).  But, not only was it a very pretty copy of the first edition, it also was signed by Mr. Willson and his ever-lovin' Rini on a tipped in paper.  Not only that, the tipped in piece of paper is from a band concert in June of 1958, a mere six months after Music Man had opened on Broadway - not only that, the band concert took place in Mason City, Iowa, which is, of course, the model for River City.  The trade worked out fine and it's now mine all mine.

Which means, I've now got an extra first edition of The Music Man - not quite as nice a copy, but aside from a slight spine fade and a big crease on the bottom of the front dust jacket panel, it's pretty damn good.  It's a very rare book in first edition (lots of Fireside Theater copies).  So, any hainsies/kimlets who might like to add this to their collection, just drop me an e-mail and I'll tell you the deal - and it's a good deal.

And now, I must shower, shave, dress and go to work for a few hours.  After that, I will probably go to a local production of "The Beauty Queen of Leenane."  My friend Kim is playing the daughter.

And my friend, Lynn, is playing the mother.

Cool!  But it turns out that I won't see this tonight.  I bought a ticket for next Saturday.  Tonight, I'm going to see "The Tempest."  I know most of the people in the cast, so I feel that I should see this first. :)

Have you already seen ROCKY HORROR?

"AARRGGHH!!," he yells, as he hangs his head in shame.  About a half-hour ago, I finally called Harlequin Productions (http://www.harlequinproductions.org) to ask about ushering and was told that ALL of the usher slots are filled!!  And they've sold 106% of tickets...they added seats for even more paying patrons.  They haven't officially announced it, but they have left open days into July for an extention, so I'll start calling next week about that.  And I asked if there's a waiting list for ushering and the guy said that he'd start one.  So HOPEFULLY, I'll get to see it before it's too late. :-\

King Island Brie!
Camembert (King Island or Gippsland Victoria)

I love deep fried Camembert with spicy plum suauce or with quince.

(I am however on a very limited cheese diet!)

DP and I enjoyed some kind of Cheese from Sheep's Milk  served in Provence.

New Zealand also produces some beautiful cheeses.

Also bought a nice 1950s display case for the dining room...which means I will have to move the book case out of there an into the garage....I now will have more furniture in my garage then in my house!

However the thrift store that is delivering the display case will also be relieving me of some of that extra furniture.

TOD

Der Brucer and I have a favorite cheese shoppe in town.  Beautiful Foods (http://www.capegazette.com/storiescurrent/200712/beautifulfoods122807.html) (click for news article) has all sorts of wonderful 'stuffs that we don't sell at the supermarket, but it's the cheese selection that is the real highlight.

There was, for instance, the time that der B bought a magnificent bleu that was so creamy and tangy that it qualified as an aphrodesiac.  Typically, his daughter detests bleus in any form, and when we took it with us as part of a cheese board before a Christmas dinner, she insisted that it not be in the same room as she.  "I cannot stand the smell!" she proclaimed.  So we put it in the one room she never enters - the kitchen.

More recently, when I decided to try my hand at a risotto, it was der B who suggested that we get the appropriate Parmesan at B.F.   I still haven't told him how much I paid for the wedge, but it has been aged two years and is worth every crumb.

This leaves us in real danger this summer, when we are trying to economize.  Every Tuesday, the Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market (http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com/) convenes at a park in town.  Rather than battle the traffic, we're choosing to park outside of town and walk in.  Our route, of course, passes right by Beautiful Foods.  Will we be tempted?  Yes we will, every week!

Life is good.

He might.  I'm not sure if he will get taller but he should fill out over the next year.  We don't think it get as big as we originally expected, which means I won't have a dog that weighs more than I do :( ;D

It has been a darn busy day...had very good luck thrift store shopping and found some nice vintage treasures. Also bought a nice 1950s display case for the dining room...which means I will have to move the book case out of there an into the garage....I now will have more furniture in my garage then in my house!

However the thrift store that is delivering the display case will also be relieving me of some of that extra furniture.

Will you be putting some of your mummified boyfriends on display?

It is very nice to have you back, Jane.  My back is terrible, but I have decided there is no way I can have back surgery - so I guess I will just live with it.

As for the MRSA, the golf ball lump is now gone, and tomorrow marks my last day with the sulfa drugs.  Please mark July 16 on your calendar as a day for positive vibes.  Each time the MRSA has returned on the 30th day.

They are editing a lot of the actual grooming so you don't see anything yucky.   It's the final four. I'm assuming only one will go home and I think I know who it's going to be.

DP and I watched "The Kite Runner" last night.  I've not read the book.

I really enjoyed the movie until the last half hour's return to Kaboul section which was so contrived and unbelievable! Was this a "hollywoodization" of the novel?

Exactly what I siad about the last section. Of ALL the people to run into going back, the man HAD to be THAT man. Argh!

I spent the afternmoon watching the first four episodes of THE OFFICE from the season three box set. I watched all the episodes when season three was first broadcast, but I hadn't had time to watch this since I got the box many months ago.\\The first one was one of the season's best: the outing of Oscar in the office by idiot boss Michael. Hilarious from beginning to end. I loved seeing it again.

The next one had Michael and Dwight attending a convention where Jim and his new boss were also attending. Funny show with lots of heart, too.

In these episodes, we got to know Andy (Ed Helms) who became a big part of the show as the season progressed and all during this past season, too.

Also watched the episode where they had a memorial service for a dead bird. Also, the episode where Dwight went behind Michael's back to try to get a promotion.

One of the great things about the box sets for seasons two and three is that there are a wealth of deleted scenes for each episode that didn't make it to air andn yet the material is just as funny as the broadcast episode. In some cases, there are almost enough deleted scenes to make another half hour episode.

DR Cillaliz - I hope you have a nice day with your Dad (and Mom) tomorrow.

Thanks Ginny.  I'm taking a rhubarb pie I bought this morning at the farmer's market. (and some rhubarb marmelade that is really tasty)

Dad wants mom's roast beef and rice, so that's the menu. I think she got some asparagus at the farmer's market there. Not sure what else we'll have.

Then I'm measuring windows in the guest house (used to be a garage )  for blinds and if they are standard size we'll run to Wal-Mart and get them and if my dad remembered to charge the drill, I'll install them.   I have to program a NOAA weather radio and Dad has some computer issues for me to fix.   So, I'll mostly be doing this chore or that chore, but it's ok, I enjoy doing it.

Tonight I switched over to Blu-ray material and watched first the Blu-ray of THE UNTOUCHABLES.

This has been a very controversial transfer in that Paramount scrubbed the master clean of all grain, so the image looks nice and polished but the character of film seems strangely missing from the clean look of the transfer.

Still, knowing this ahead of time kept me from being shocked at the way it looked, and I enjoyed seeing it again. No HD audio mixes, though. Merely Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES, both lossy audio transfers.

Thanks for that Matt.  Glad it is not just me.

I would have been much happier if the story teller had just gone and found the boy in Pakistan with his "Uncle" to whom he dedicated the book.
The whole sling shot incident was just too much - as if the kid would have had that given his situation! And it was oh so easy to escape back to Pakistan.

When that was over, I watched DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER on Blu-ray. Neither of the first two DIE HARDS gained much over their sDVD counterparts on the way to Blu-ray. Starting with DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE, however, the differences in the two are night and day.

The Blu-ray did, however, up the ante in the sound department using a DTS-HD MA audio mix that was quite spectacular.

Yes, that definitely caused me to lower my score a bit for the content of the film though it was quite involving. A fine film but not the great one it could have been.

TOmorrow I'll be back at the ole reviewing stand doing Criterion's BEFORE THE RAIN. As I suspected, there are A LOT of special features to get through, and as I've never seen the film either, I'll be quite busy with it all day.

Cedar Rapids is still under water, but Iowa City is really in trouble.  I am so sad to see that Hancher Auditorium is flooded.  I worked there as a stage hand during college. The Art Museum is flooded as are most of the Art bulidings.   I did hear that a Mack Truck pulled up to the Art Museum to move things out.  They had some really great pieces in that collection. I hope they got them out.

One of the apartments I lived in in Coralville is underwater.  The library is closed and apparently they are trying to move books but have said that the books on the lower floors aren't rare and can be replaced if necessary.

The river there isn't supposed to crest for a few days so it's going to get worse. This is so sad.

Quote
A dozen UI buildings flooded
Brian Sharp • Iowa City Press-Citizen • June 14, 2008

The University of Iowa said today that one-eighth of campus is flooded, with waters as high as 3- to 4-feet above the main floor in many buildings on the arts campus.

In all, a dozen university buildings are locked down and listed as flooded, including Hancher Auditorium, the Museum of Art, the Iowa Memorial Union and North and Mayflower residence halls.

UI officials had hoped to complete flood preparation, including all sandbagging efforts before a severe band of thunderstorms moved in tonight.

University Hospitals, in a decision made yesterday, is only accepting critical patients. The hospital went to a back-up boiler this morning after water overtook the campus power plant, near the Burlington Street bridge. Loss of the plant is mostly affecting research facilities and causing a loss of hot water and reduced level of air conditioning. Critical research projects already have been relocated. Two temporary boilers, one on each side of the river, should be in place in the next 48 or 72 hours.
