Well, you've read the notes, the notes were back in the work mode, and now it is time for you to post until the working cows come home.

Hopefully, the birthday boy hadn't gotten to the second page of the notes before I added the wishes - otherwise, he can go back and see them now.

There has nearly always been a pet dog or two as members of our household.  The first dog I remember was named "Bluey". (Usually that denotes someone with red hair in this land of OZ).  Bluey was not a redhead.  I could not say "Bluey" and called him "Bluedly".

It's also a good time for me get on my hobby horse (which is not a pet) and sound off against CAGED birds etc.  It doesn't matter how much they are loved by their owners!

My first dog was in the family already when I was born. He was a black cocker spaniel and his name was Pepper. He died tragically under the wheels of a garbage truck when we lived in the Griffin Creek area of Medford.

When it happened my brother whisked me off to get an ice cream cone in town so that I wouldn't know what had occurred. I was around 5 or 7 years old, I think.

My next pet was a tiny white kitten that I named Salty (we still had Pepper at this time).

Salty did not live long enough to seee adulthood, due to the fact that my teenage sister ran him over with her VW Bug. I found Salty all bloody, but still alive. My brothers then made him not alive any more.

I was about 4 or 5 years old.

Next up was Heidi, a German Shephard/collie mix. She was a wonderful dog and lived a long, full life. My oldest brother Jack, just returned from Vietnam, got her and then gave her to us when he moved to Portland. This must have been around 1972 or '73.

Heidi died of a heart attack sometime in the early 1980s.

At the same time we had Heidi, and were living in Griffin Creek (we lived on the side of a mountain and so we had lots of room) we also had Bouregard - a black lab and Red - golden retriever mix, I think. They actually belonged to some of my siblings, but the dogs for some period of time lived with us throughout the 1970s.

Around 1975 we got a black cat named Chuck. After we moved to Central Point a few months later, he ran away or something.

I didn't have another pet until 1983 when I first moved out of the house and into an apartment in Ashland. One day in walked a black and white kitten, just out of nowhere. I named him Boo Boo and kept him when I moved to Salem 6 months later.

I eventually moved to an apartment that did not allow pets and I gave Boo Boo to an ex-boyfriend where he lived a happy life for several more years.

One of the earliest pets that I can remember having was a turtle named Herman.  We had him when we lived in Germany (when I was four to seven years old), and we left him there when we moved back to the states...I don't remember if we left him with someone, or just left him. :-\

No more pets for me until about 1994 when I found Buford the tabby cat at the Humane Society. I lost him in December of 2001, he was around 13 years old

In mid-2002 I got my beloved Freddy, also at the Humane Society.

Then a few years later along came Dog Bosco, also from the Humane Society.

And that brings me up to date.

During the time we lived in Germany and Colorado (up until I was 10 years old), we had four female cats in a row (none at the same time) named Frisky.  We also had male cats named Tiger and Spot (Spot was the best...he was white with black spots and three of them on his back looked like hearts).  And the last cat my parents had was a female cat named Happy (my niece named her when my niece was four years old).  Happy had a litter of kittens and my sister's (then) parents-in-law took two and named one Gigi (a female) and the other one Ginger...they didn't know that she was a "he" until quite a while later.

Before I was born, my parents had a poodle that was supposed to be my sister's dog but I don't think that they had him/her for very long.  They do have a picture of my sister at about one year old with the dog.

Title: Re:BACK IN THE WORK MODE
Post by: George on September 02, 2008, 01:11:57 AM
The only other time time that we had a dog was when I was in middle school (I think...Spot hadn't died yet, so it was within a couple of years of moving to Washington from Colorado) and they got me a small black lab (I think).  I named him Muppet, but he chewed on everything, including my parents' grandfather clock and none of us knew anything about training dogs, so we had to give him away.  This was a good thing.  The people who took him loved dogs and he was very happy with them. :)

I got my current cat from my former roommate whose (now ex-)wife was allergic to cats.  When they got married and he moved out, I kept the cat.  When they divorced, he didn't take back the cat (not quite a Guys and Dolls reference ;))  Ebonie has been my cat now for almost three years. :)

I realize that it's too late, but there is a JD that we missed yesterday:

John Dortmunder, semi-iconic creation of Donald Westlake in a series of comic heist novels, portrayed best on-screen by Robert Redford in The Hot Rock and far less memorably by George C. Scott in Bank Shot (but, as with every portrayal of Dortmunder on film other than Redford's, Scott's rendition was given another name for the film).

Too bad they never got Lee Marvin to play Dortmunder - it turns out that Dortmunder was Westlake's own comic turn on another of his characters, Parker, portrayed by Marvin in the film Point Blank (but, in that film, Parker was called Walker - there's a long history of names being changed to protect the guilty in Westlake-based movies).  In any case, Marvin would have been perfect for Dortmunder.  *sigh*

Ah, yes, Shortz.  The miniature black and tan daschund.  So named by my sister because most everyone in the family was tall.

There has always been a condescending streak in my sister's personality.

Mom originally hadn't wanted us to have a dog, or any kind of pet (other than the occasional parakeet or a tank of fish).  She had been bitten by a German Shepard when she was very young, and just didn't like dogs.  But Dad convinced her that a small dog would be good for the family, so we went to a reputable breeder and there he was, even as a pup filled with that typical daschund spunk.

Although Shortz was supposed to be the family dog, my sister pretty much claimed him as hers for the longest time.  Then she abandoned him for college, and he transferred his loyalty to me.  I, at least, had the decency to give him the option of a more dignified name, such as Herman or Henrick, which he seemed to appreciate.  After I moved out, he again transferred his loyalty, this time to Mom, although he loved my returns for visits whenever I could.

He was a smart fellow.  We originally closed him in the kitchen when we all had to leave the house, but he figured out how to open the door, so we ended up giving him free reign through the household.  He also enjoyed the back yard, his kingdom, and learned to stay there even though we didn't have a gate to keep him in - Mom had long before knocked down one of the gateposts while backing out the too-narrow driveway in the family station wagon.  Every day, when I returned from school, he would be waiting for me at the line we had trained him to stay behind, and would only come charging merrily up when I called to him.

He lived to the ripe old age of seventeen, or was it eightteen.  Mom decided he couldn't be replaced, she had loved him too much during those later years.  But then, Shortz was the only dog she had ever cared about, her only animal companion.  We were lucky to have had him.

Somewhere in the archives, way long ago (well, five years or so), there's the story of how Bonnie and Buster came into our lives, a tale I told here in something resembling real time.

I just don't feel like digging it up and reprinting it right now.  Go ahead and so a search, if you want.  Only, in the storytelling, Buster was originally named Clyde, so you might want to use that as a search key-word.

Good morning, all!  I watched THE CLOSER, and, after deciding I couldn't take Mr Goselaar seriously in that ridiculous haircut on RAISING THE BAR, went to bed. Around 5 am I awoke and was wide awake for about 30 minutes as I tried to get back to sleep,  and I must have done so since I was awakened by the alarm at 6:30.  The laundry is in, I'm fed and medicated, and I have to sketch in the accompaniments to the choral arrangements I finshed yesterday. I have a few telephonic calls between 9 and 10 am, and then I see my doctor around 2:15.

My beloved brother Randy called me yesterday to give me hell for not calling him between Thursday's ER and yesterday, and I told him I hadn't wanted to interrupt his camping vacation: what could he do from Ohio? And he told me that since he was a diabetic(!!!), which I did not know, he might have at least advised me on things or sent me a glucose meter.  We also discussed other things among his bitching at me.

TOD:  to be continued.

Good morning!

Cool weather returns! Had a lovely night of sleep with cool fresh air being drawn into the house via the attic fan, and this morning has been similarly wonderful. Supposed to be cool tonight, too, though it will get into the 80s today and make me have to shut things up for awhile.

I could write a book about my pets...but I won't.

It's too painful to think about the ones that are no longer with me.

I love/loved all my pets...dogs, cats, hamsters, rats, hamsters...and I even had a goat once.

The only one that I didn't really take to was a parrot I had, named "Charlie".  I guess I'm not a bird person...and Charlie was a nasty pain in the butt.

After about 4-5 months, I started looking for another home for him.  I told folks that, if I didn't get rid of him by November, I wouldn't need to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving.

I was just kidding, of couse, but come Thanksgiving, Charlie has a new home.

Right now, we have a cat and 2 dogs (border collie & Norfork terrier).

Unfortunately, we had to put my other cat (of 14 years) to sleep 2-3 months ago.  I'm still not over that one.

Now that we know who has won the veto and has used it in accordance with the plans, we can expect, I think, to see Renny leave the house Thursday.  Whoever wins HOH that night will ensure Jerry is the next to go, unless something really drastic happens.

Traditionally, when there are only three left, there will be a three-part HOH competition.  The winner of part one will meet the winner of part two and the HOH will be the winner of part three.  He or she will then decide who will go forward to the final two and the voting.

In a way, I wish it was Keesha who would be leaving this week because I really like Renny's chances.  That said, it's apparent to Dan and Memphis that neither can win if either stands with her at the end, so it's a sure bet she's gone now.

I'm looking forward to this season finally coming to an end, however. Xdljkfjklf lkjalkj kljfkjaklj ;lkjlkj adfjh;lkjafljhag;lkjalkhagjhahaklgj.

Obama says that people's families are "off limits."

But they are not.  To the extent that evangelicals and conservatives vilify my family in their cynical attempt to garner hate votes, I shall be scrutinizing their families in equal measure.  And so far, their actions don't measure up to their words.

As for the Topic of the Day...

A crazy poodle named, Princess, when my family lived in Seattle.  I was eight years old, I believe.  She was only with us for a couple of months due to various problems - which included biting some of the neighbors.  :-\  Now that I think of it, I believe it was my mother who wanted to add a pet to the household, since I don't seem to recall me or or my brothers being "pet people" at the time.  -Although, my brothers Don and Michael have dogs now.

Oh, and we also had a couple of gerbils and hamsters from time to time - all of whom seemed to be able to chew through their crates with their very sharp teeth.

I've only had two pets (although I think my mother allowed us to have a parakeet that I won at at grammar school carnival for about one day) - a dog I found abandoned in a record store in 1978 - we named her Sandy - we eventually gave her away when the deevorce happened), and the unlucky Lucky several years ago - Actually about six years ago now.  Lucky was very odd and I shouldn't have taken her - her owners who needed to get rid of her didn't tell me anything of her history and later confirmed she had problems, which was so nice of them three months after the fact.  She'd obviously been abused by someone.  It took me four hours of literally sitting a few feet away from her to get her to stop growling.  I then figured out the trick - which was to take her leash, put it on the counter and say "walk?"  From that point on she was fine and didn't growl, although she did growl really loudly whenever a child was near - that was bad, and I suspect maybe it was kids who abused her.  She was very sweet with me most of the time.  But, if she perceived that you were looking at her in some sort of way, she'd pee - right then and there, wherever she was, which was frequently in the house.  You couldn't predict it, either.  For example, for weeks we did the leash and her walk thing - it was her favorite.  She'd jump up, put her feet on the counter and not move till I put the leash on her.  Then we'd have a nice walk.  One day, I did the routine, she looked at the counter and the leash and peed.  Another example: She loved the car and going for drives.  She'd jump right in the back seat, and when we were done she'd jump right out.  Until one day when we were done she wouldn't get out and peed instead.  After three months, I'd had it and so had my carpet, wood floors and everything else.  All the growling at strangers was not good.  I called the people from whom I'd gotten her - they wouldn't take her back, but did admit they'd had those same problems.  I called several shelters, all of whom refused to take her because I had to be honest about the problems.  I always thought animal shelters took any sort of dog.  I finally had to make the difficult decision to take her to the pound, which I did.

DR RonP, i was also sad to see jerry win hoh this week. But i think it went relatively well considering. It would have been much worse to me if he had won veto. I was very happy that memphis conned him into not nominating dan/memp. And i am dying to find out if jerry went ballistic when he found out memphis betrayed him and took down dan. So gullible!  I am happier that renny will go than keesha. I liked the 4 (dan/renny/keesha/memphis). But my favs in order are dan, then keesha then renny then memphis. Although for some reason my gut really wanted the dan/memphis plan this week to work. But i would like dan/keesha in the finals. Jerry cannot compete in hoh next week(yeah). But i guess we just have to hope he does not win pov. That would suck. I would like dan or keesha win hoh. I cannot believe how close dan was to winning hoh this week!

TOD:

Dinky-Boo -- an Eskimo Spitz my dad thought would be a great pet for me at age 2 or 3.  As it turns out, Dinky-Boo (his name was "Dinky", but I used to walk up and try to scare him by saying "Dinky!  BOO!" and it stuck) wasn't too fond of other people, but he was devoted to me.  My mom was afraid he'd attack/bite other kids (and there were a lot of 'em in our neighborhood) so my father gave him away circa 1952.

Toby -- a blond Cocker Spaniel.  Santa Claus brought him when I was four or five, I think (circa 1952/53).  He was just a puppy.  I had Toby about 11 years or so.  He was always an outdoors pet, and I think that has a lot to do with longevity.  Poor thing was deaf and nearly blind when my father had him put down.  He did this the day before we were to leave on family vacation.  I was led to believe he was going to the vets for the week.  When my father got home he was wretched -- kept sobbing.  My mom finally told me why.  I felt so bad for my father that I kept to myself that I was terribly hurt I wasn't given the chance to say a proper goodbye.

Maggie -- white cat, medium-length hair.  This was my third pet, but it was 10 years after Toby.  I was in the Navy and living in Naples, Italy, 1975-77.  One of my neighbors had too many cats for him (his girlfriend had even more) and he offered me one he called "Bianca".  She didn't look Italian to me, and I called her Maggie.  She was a great cat, loved chasing an aluminum foil ball I made and absolutely loved me.  Trouble was, I lived in a ground floor apartment that was only "secure" when the Roman persiana (wooden blinds on doors and windows) were closed.  It meant she was cooped up all day in the dark, and I eventually came to believe it wasn't a great thing for her, even though I enjoyed her immensely.  I spoke with my neighbor and he spoke with his girlfiend (who had the penthouse apartment with most of the building's rooftop as a balcony).  She was very happy to add Maggie to her brood, and I got to visit any time I wanted (I even cats-sat when she and my neighbor would go away on weekends).

Dickens -- male tiger-Persian mix.  LOVE of my life!  He was a gift to me from my landlady's daughter in 1987 when I was again in Naples, Italy (ten years later).  He was a kitty when I got him, and a vet later told me he couldn't have been more than 4 weeks old at the time.  I bought books on cats to teach me things I thought I needed to know.  I learned much more just watching him develop.  He was an amazing creature.

Vickie (aka Miss Vickie, Vickie Lester and Vickitoria) -- adopted in 1988 to be company/companion for Dickens.  There was an ordeal!  Both cats hated one another on sight.  Or so I thought.  They put me through all sorts of hell.  I had to feed them on different sides of the kitchen.  I had to give them "time outs"...from time to time, giving each freedom from the other by letting one outside a day at a time while keeping the other inside and devoting loads of attention to him or her.

I had to go away for a weekend and a co-worker who lived nearby offered to feed and play with the cats.  I fully briefed her on the routine I had so she'd understand why these cats seemed to hate one another.  When I returned and went to get my keys, she had a curious smile on her face.  She told me that when she went into the house both cats greeted her.  When she began preparing food, they were both at her feet, rubbing up against her and one another.  She put their food in separate dishes next to one another.  They both dived in, ate a while, and then they swapped bowls.  She said she talked to them while they ate.  Later, she said, they groomed one another.

I was dumbfounded.  I rushed home to witness this extraordinary sight.  What I found was what I left -- exactly the same animosity and hissing, etc.  It was then that it dawned on me.  They both liked one another, they just didn't want to "share" me.

I took some corrective measures including not petting them separately but together.  Instead of giving each separate-but-equal doses of my time, I gave "both" the same measure of attention "together."

This ultimately worked out just fine.  Vickie was a bit clingier/needier than Dickens was, and she often overdid her attentions to him, including grooming.  Dickens would cooperate only to a point, and then he would swat at her.

There was never a question of whether both of these creatures would leave Italy with me.  My parents agreed to care for them during my last tour in the Navy.  They lived in Virginia at the time.  Later, they moved to South Carolina where my mom now lives.  Both cats had travelled extensively by the time they got to Johnston SC.  At that time, I was out of the Navy but living in a place where pets weren't allowed.  In 1995, I was anticipating being in a cat-friendly apartment by the end of the year and I'd have my two children with me.  Sadly, Dickens wouldn't make it through that year as he was struck by a speeding car on a backroad on which the speed limit was 5 mph.  Anyone doing the limit would easily have missed any animal in the road.

I did bring Miss Vickie back to Oakland when I returned from my Christmas vacation with my folks.  It was the first time in her life that she had been the "only kitty".  Her little personality flourished and she was with me until August in her 22nd year.

I have no immediate plans to adopt another until my future plans are more clear to me.  I'm retirement-eligible (again) and I hope to continue working at least two more years before packing up and moving back east to be closer to my mom.  Then, it may be time to consider....another dog!

To wax political for just a moment...

Obama says that people's families are "off limits."

But they are not.  To the extent that evangelicals and conservatives vilify my family in their cynical attempt to garner hate votes, I shall be scrutinizing their families in equal measure.  And so far, their actions don't measure up to their words.

IMHO.

Well put my friend.

Anthony is very happy!

Can't we have a VP who at least knows about birth control and urges its practice?

I would like a dime for every pregnant teen that ignored parental advice on birth control.

Andrew Sullivan, with whom I often agree, is now insisting that the McCain campaign obtain and release Palin's personal medical records to determine the maternity of the poor baby! So now whenever any wing-nut throws out a charge, however outrageous, it is incumbant on the accused to prove their innocence >:( To quote Penn and Teller - Bullshit!

My brother was asthmatic when he was little, so we weren't allowed to have pets.  However, I did have two goldfish named George and Fifi.

When my brother's asthma was no longer a problem, we got a puppy for Christmas (a cocker spaniel/poodle/ something mix) that we named Sugar Prum (A yuletide Hai-Karate commercial was running at the time).  She was a great dog (and I'd love to have her now), but she didn't have much of a chance with six kids and two adults who had no idea what parenting was.

I had two newts (Cadeau and Delta).

When I met DRMusicGuy, he had a blonde Cocker Spaniel who was about a year old, and she became my world.  Buffie lived a very comfortable 14 years.

We then got Wee Baby Doris-- a Basset Hound puppy who ruled everything.  What a character!   Stubborn, smart, funny.  A few years later, and although I am a one-dog man, some friends (well, their dogs, actuallly) had a litter of black labs (and of course once you meet a puppy, there's no turning back).  Since she came from a good Jewish family, Lyn named her Mazal.  Both Doris and Mazal also lived to be 14.  Mazal really came into her own once she was an only dog and the world revolved around her.  What a sweetie.

After she went to dog bone heaven, I was determined to not get a pet for awhile despite how empty I felt.  But I was the one who had to stay home while DRMusicGuy traveled.  He loved the dogs, but I was definitely "the Mom."  So, I thought I'd wait a year or two to give me the chance to do a few things I wanted.  Mind you, anytime we traveled, I pleaded, paid, cajolled and did everything to get my mother or sister to actually move into my house so the dogs could just stay in their own routine and not have to be boarded.

I was working at a bakery for dogs when Mazal died, so I still had the chance to see dogs all the time.  Despite my conviction to NOT get another dog for awhile, one day a friend showed up at the bakery with this beautiful Border Collie mix.  I KNEW from the moment I saw her that it was love at first sight.  However, I thought, this dog belonged to my friend, and that therefore I wa s safe.  As it turns out, she was just taking the dog out for a play day.  She was a stray that they were trying to find a home for.  Once my friend said that, I knew that I was sunk.   It didn't take much convincing.  Sugar is a beautiful dog (and still is---as I got to spend some time with her on Sunday) and still gets lots of treats.   She is probably the most well-adjusted dog I ever had (probably because I didn't raise her from a puppy!)  ::)

Everyone said that Sugar must have done something right to going from surviving on the streets for a month or two to going to live at a house with an acre of fenced yard and two devoted humans (one of which was the manager of a store that made dog treats).  She got to try out every new treat, every new toy there was.

Buffie's job was to make sure we pampered her; Wee Baby Doris' job was to make sure I knew who was boss.  Mazal's job was to be sweet and to make me play fetch (over and over again) everyday.  Sugar's job (especially since she is a working/herding dog) is to see that I get properly walked everyday.

Ok, happy stories:

We fostered cats and kittens from a few shelters here in town. We often had mothers with kittens. The kittens just needed to grow enough to go go adoptions.

One of our first mothers with kittens was Sasha, who came to us with four male kittens: Bruce (named after BK), Jamie (named after someone we knew), Francis (Frankie in Forever Plaid), and Jason (Jason Graae). When Sandra was taking them out of the carrier, I heard a shout: "Mom! They didn't neuter Jason. They SPAYED him!"

They deemed Sasha "unadoptable," so she stayed here with us. She is quite a dignified lady, who spends most of her time reigning over the house from the couch. (She wasn't unadoptable, just stressed out at the pet store.)

Does their behaving badly justify our poor behavior?

Sometimes, you have to slap people silly in order to get them to see how two-faced they're being.

It's far too convenient for prejudicial ignorance to be tolerated in order to avoid being considered "equally" bad.

How would your argument apply to such actions as the Boston Tea Party (was "our" poor behavior justified in view of King George III's bad behavior?).

DR Singdaw - the offer is "scheduled" to be in by 8:00pm tonight, at least that is what the info on our papers said.  We included a deposit to prove that we are really interested and also have completed the "short sale" paperwork  "Short sale" doesn't mean much as we're finding out, could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks or months.  We're hoping for a few days.  It's hard not to be impatient!

It's the first time Difford and Tilbrook have played together after splitting up years ago, and this was the closest concert. Skipping over family pets that really belonged to my sisters, the first pet that was truly mine was a cat named Bill. My ex-husband and I got Bill and Ted as 10-week old kittens in 1991. "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" was all the rage then. When we divorced in 1999, my ex kept Ted and I kept Bill (they fought constantly anyway). Bill was the perfect cat in every way. When Mark and I were house-hunting in 2003, I became very stressed. Our town-house sold in three days and we had no house to move into yet. It wasn't the peak of the housing boom, but it was the peak of the SPEED of the housing boom. Prices were jumping up about $10,000 each week. The instant we bought our single-family house, things started to slow down. I mean prices continued to climb, but not at such a ridiculous rate. Anyway, my chubby cat started losing weight around this time and I wondered if my cat was sensing my stress. I didn't pay much attention because he was still energetic and he was eating, just not as much, and he needed to lose weight anyway. He was looking much healthier during this time. Sadly, he was eaten by a coyote nine days before we closed escrow, and moved to a less coyote-infested area. I always locked him in doors at night, but I had to work late one night, and that's when he disappeared. Two years later, I received an e-mail from my ex who asked me if Bill was still alive. He said that Ted and had died from cancer two years earlier. So both cats died right around the same time. Now, I wonder if Bill was losing weight because he was in the very early stages of cancer - in which case - being eaten by a coyote may have been a blessing. If not, I'd like to ask god what sins my cat committed to deserve such a fate.

But on to happier things. You've already seen pictures of my current cat and dog. I was always a cat-person and this is my very first dog. I'm now a huge dog convert, but that doesn't mean my cat gets left behind, as you can see from this video (link below). The white watermark is there because I used a trial version of some crappy software to create a .avi file. Try to ignore it.

TOD:

The beloved dog of my childhood was Cindy, a cairn terrier who looked just like Toto. We were all destroyed when she finally died of cancer.

We still had her son, Duffy, who we turned into a neurotic dog, as children do. While we had him, my mom, who made all the pet decisions, decided she wanted another dog.

When she got our third dog, a St. Bernard named Gretchen, Duffy started running off to other houses, especially a house with a dachsund, which I guess made him feel like a big dog again. He was eventually killed by a pack of wild dogs (we lived in the mountains of Virginia) in the schoolyard where my mother taught, so she saw it all happen.

When I was in college, it was discovered that Gretchen had heart worms, and the treatment would be very expensive. So my mother had the vet put her down before anyone could object or even knew of her condition. This led my father into a deep depression that lasted for a long time, because he loved that dog very much.

Is it any wonder that as an adult I am now a cat person?

In the missing pet department: earlier this year we bought some wonderful metal sculptures that I think I posted---our "practice" goats. They were a mother and 2 babies, made from recycled oil drums. They "lived" in our barn.

Well, some time the past week, someone decided to "kid-"nap the two babies. The barn backs up to an easement that the city has and the goats could be easily seen thru the barn window. So it could have been city workers, the tree people who cut down a neighbor's tree and dumped it back there, the landowner's lawn mowing guy or neighborhood kids.

Anyway, even though they were only metal, I miss them and their mom looks lonely without them! (She is now living inside our fence in case the thief returns for her.)

TOD - we had a few dogs growing up.  All of which were "status" for my step-father, who liked to have his dog, but didn't like to take care of them.   We loved the dogs, but he didn't seem to want anything to do with them, just lock them in a cage, but he had a dog, so that's what mattered.  That alone turned me off to dogs.

We attempted cats growing up, but that was disastrous also.

In 1992, I adopted a cat named Smokey.  Smokey had many MANY lives and we were always amazed that he survived the outside world as he did.  He was a great cat.  He left us in 2006. He had a great life.

Also, in 1998, I decided it would be fun to have an iguana as a pet.  My partner at the time had one, and it seemed like a good idea to have a second one.  I named him Kyle (yes, the iguana) Well the relationship (with the partner) didn't last, but I kept Kyle a few more years.  I ended up passing him on to a science teacher.  I'm not sure what happened after that.

Nowadays, it's all about Otto, the mini-schnauzer, who is definitely one of the family.  The DP has always had a schnauzer as they have hair and not fur, as the DP is allergic.  Everybody loves Otto, especially his Dads.  In fact, they would go as far as buying a house with a HUGE backyard for him to play in.  What Otto doesn't know, is that we are expecting to adopt his yet-to-be-born nephew at the beginning of the year.  So he'll have to share his yard (or whatever he has at that moment).

Happy Foster Cat Story:
Tina Marie (named for the song) was rescued from a busy street. Tina Marie was crooked; the vet thought she had been hit by a car at some point and the bones healed crooked. Or crookedly. (I'm sure DerBrucer will tell us.)

When she ran down the hallway, you had to laugh, because she looked like a horseshoe -- her back feet were up as far as her front feet.

Happy Foster Story:

I was listening to a Guy Haines CD when I went to the pound to pick up a mother w/kittens. When I got them in the car and turned on the engine, the CD started up with Guy singing, "I loved you the first time I saw you, and I always will love you, Marie." So the mom cat became Marie. Her kittens were all females, as I recall, and Sandra gave them all "-ette_ names: Antoinette, Fleurette, etc.

DR JEANNE these are the last few days of the LONG Jupiter retrograde, so health setbacks and transportation delays and problems can be expected.

It will end on September 7!  So we must hang in there for a few days.  In the meantime we have a Sun/Saturn conjunction today that compels us to apply our energy to ourselves and new projects.

Thank you, Jack. Too much was happening for it to just be a coincidence.

Sherlock would really like a dog or cat to bond with.  I've been telling Keith if we get a cat we must finally succeed at training one to walk on a leash.

I carried Bosco (our tortie & white) around in a basket until she got too big.  She did not take to the leash & her traveling days with Belle (our big black Belgian Sheepdog) sadly ended.

Do you take your cat places besides the quiet neighborhood.  Our walks would be in town where it can get crowded & loud.  Do you travel on vacation with them?

Back from the errands o' the day.  Pluto must be in Uranus or Uranus must be in Mars because you'd think it was the Christmas season - the post office was a total joke - jammed beyond repair.  Thankfully, all I had to do was drop my packages on the counter and leave, but even getting into the parking lot was madness because people drive like complete dolts.  At the mail place, the parking lot was also nuts - even at the bank.  People.  Can't live with 'em, can't live with 'em.  And then there was the gas station - not crowded, really, but people parked in ways that you couldn't pull up to the pump that was open.  People.  I gotta tell you.

We had many dogs at our house during my growing up years and one cat who simply took up with us for about eight months and then left just as suddenly. The two doggies that stand out in my mind:

Cindy - a mix of fox terrier and chihuahua. The sweetest, most loving dog ever put on earth. She lived to be 15.

Snowball - a teacup chihuahua who was a true spitfire. Hated all strangers and yipped at anyone not living in her house. She lived to be 12.

I've had two dogs as an adult, both pugs:

Shadow - coal black and sometimes ornery. She only lived to age 6.

Gretchen - a champagne pug who was actually my partner's dog and who went with him when he left. She lived a long time, but I'm not quite sure how long.

I carried Bosco (our tortie & white) around in a basket until she got too big.
Do you take your cat places besides the quiet neighborhood. Do you travel on vacation with them?

I carry my cat (Casper) in the type of carrier that sits against your chest, with shoulder straps, and she's fine that way for about the first 40 minutes of our walk and I only take her out for about the last 10 minutes. That's really all she can tolerate. We've gotten into such a routine that if I forget to take her out for the last 10 minutes, she meows to remind me. But if I take her out earlier, she doesn't want to walk...go figure.

I always think it's less stressful for the pets to leave them behind with a sitter when traveling. But for our upcoming vacation I was having problems finding a sitter and we had already made plane reservations with Southwest. So I called them to ask how much it would cost to bring a small dog and they said they don't transport pets at all! Fortunately, I was finally able to find a sitter. I really hate it though - I always worry about them and miss them when we're away. Some sitters will leave "daily notes" and I think, "what's the good of leaving daily notes when I won't read any of them until I get back?" So, this new sitter has agreed to e-mail me the daily notes. Now, I just have to worry about finding a cyber cafe. Fortunately more and more hotels have them these days.

I think I have multiple copies in storage too. And I believe the cover of that book became a bit more "ethnically diverse" over the years... Just like those miniature Carol Books that were sponsored by John Hancock. I have a set of those with the original all-white-bread-male cover as well as the "rainbow" edition. Sherlock LOVES to travel with us, hops in the car & flops until we take him out.  A cat isn't necessarily going to want to go everywhere he does, but won't likely want to be left behind.  If we can't take the cat with Sherlock it sort of defeats the purpose of getting him one.

I have been hair-cutted.

And I look a bit different.

Mainly (or is that mane-ly) because the fellows who run the barber shop (which is located in the back room of a beauty supply shoppe) have decided that they really are semi-retired, and are only on the days that I'm supposed to be doing billing at the store... and during the exact same hours, pretty much.

 :P

However, there was a "stylist" there, who normally works on women's hair but was glad to take me on.  For part of the grooming, she was using a straight-edge razor "because your hair is so thick!"  Well, I've been told I've a thick head before, and not just by barbers.

One thing she did was reposition the part, so that it's a bit higher up.  It looks... jauntier, I guess is the word.  Not bad.  It'll be easy to get used to.

Der B and I have to plan our trips around getting back home within the day, because we don't want to leave the gang alone too long.  Leaving them with someone else would be too much of a hassle, and all the kennels around here charge an arm and a leg.  So, we drive up to NYC, we drive back home, and everyone is happy to see us when we get back.

I guess this means I'll be spending more time in the kitchen, with the pork roast, the fruit salad, and the brown rice.

I also need to figure out how I'm going to make stuffed bell peppers and sweet potato fries, booty from the farmer's market today.  If I go a little greekish with the bell peppers, and use a little cinnamon, they should blend well with the sweet potato fries, I think.

Our children grew up with an itinerary (their father's) on the frig.  I don't believe they looked at it much cuz they were always asking "Where's Dad".  "What do you mean he isn't coming home tonight!"

Now I'm always asking for their itineraries, as much as I can get anyway.

DR Jane - I was pretty sure Rob and Mary Linda were still in Michigan.  When Richard and I travel, I always email our itinerary to my mom, our son, my sister, my niece, my cousin (whose mom lives near us), and Richard's niece.  Today Rob said,  "Are you still in New York?"

I suspect I'll be seeng a bit of him until these meds are in line.

And your next follow-up visit with him is scheduled for when?

Seriously... So you don't feel like a "moron" again the next time you head to the ER (and you WON'T!), you should write down all those questions that you need to ask and should ask your doctor. This way you can ask him - or you HMO - calmly instead of peppering them with expletives. If you need help coming up with questions, I'm sure there are a couple of people who could help you - your ER doctors and nurses included!

*Did he at least run you through the basic eye chart vision test today?  If you are worried about your sight right now, I'd say "splurge" on a $49 walk-in exam at Pearle or Cohen's Optical. They could at least tell you if it's something internal or external. -It might even be covered by your insurance.

Happy Foster Kitten Story:

A friend of Sandra's brought over a tiny orange kitten with an extremely LOUD meow. The kitten was four weeks old and the girl had been feeding it strawberry flavored milk. I named her Twinkie (she was the size and color of one).

We grew her up, but she was so playful that she drove the adult cats crazy. When we were going on vacation, I asked a neighbor to feed the adult cats, but I asked a friend of mine to take care of the kitten, since we wouldn't be around to rescue the old ones from the rambunctious kitten. Friend agreed, but insisted WE MUST TAKE THE KITTEN BACK when we returned from vacation.

The day we came back, my friend said "You can't have her back; I am keeping her." Turns out that Twinkie and her kitten Lacy took to each other right away and played and slept together.

This was in 1995; the last I heard a few months ago, Twinkie and Lacy were old ladies, still happy in their home together.

Hi all.

I lead a cursed life.  Just when I finely thing everything is starting to better I get slapped down again.  I just don't know what else to say.

Got the results from the last kidney stone surgery.  They are seeing 4 "shadows" that could be stones on the left side.  I'm sick about it.

Add to that Bear's skin had a stitch tear (much like what happened to me with the surgery I had last year).  I have to keep a sharp eye on him because if it gets any bigger, I have to rush him back up to the vet.

I have to keep him as calm as possible so I'll be working half days this week.   Sigh.

healed crooked. Or crookedly. (I'm sure DerBrucer will tell us.)

"Crooked". You could get away with "crookedly" during the time the bones were actually mending. "Crooked" tells us the position in which they healed, "crookedly" suggests the manner in which they were healing.

We grew her up, but she was so playful that she drove the adult cats crazy.

When I got my current cat as a kitten, I made an interesting discovery about myself. I don't really like kittens! I mean they're really cute, and they're okay to visit, but I don't like living with them. They have to be playing constantly (when they're not sleeping) and they knock EVERYTHING over. All bottles and pictures on dressers and counter tops must be knocked over on a daily basis. And kittens aren't very affectionate either. They're much more calm and cuddly when they grow up. Actually I don't remember being bothered so much by Bill and Ted's kitten behavior, but they played with each other all the time, so maybe that's why they weren't so intent on destroying the house as Casper was.

If I do get a cat, I think I want a kitten Sherlock can raise.  Our best cat/dog bonding was when Belle raised Bosco.  Bosco followed Belle everywhere, and later followed Echo around.

I don't know why I'm talking like this, I have felt so lousy the last few weeks I don't need a cat to bother my allergies & keep me awake at night.  Sherlock is more than enough. :-\

Der B and I have to plan our trips around getting back home within the day, because we don't want to leave the gang alone too long.

Unlike in Long Beach, when when on travel we left two dogs home alone (lots of food and water and a doggie door) and two went to a kennel (which they loved - it was like summer camp!). The longest stretch we were ever gone was 10 days (and the ones a home were just fine - they would have hated the kennel and didn't like strangers).

On his side.  It started back in January when I took him in for his yearly shots.  I asked about it then and was told it wasn't worth doing anything about.

Well, it was fairly small at the time.  Then it grew to the size of baseball so I took him back to the vet.  She said because of his age, we should wait and see if it would stop growing.  It got bigger, I took him back again because I couldn't stand it.

At that point she said that I should consider having him put down because she felt he would not make it through the surgery and because of the cost of the surgery.

I thought about it I couldn't do it.  I had to try--no matter the cost.

Frankly, I think the public should butt out. Sex-education is a parental responsibility; only in our left-leaning society do some parents take it upon themselves to require a certain form of sex-ed be pushed on kids at school - the argument being that since the "bad" parents don't teach it at home, we must do it at school.

IMHO.

You do realize that Obama is not for gay marriage and Biden voted in favor of the defense of family act, so he isn't either.

A form of sex-education was taught when we were in high school, as part of the Health class.  Unfortunately an epidemic swept the country requiring additional education in this matter.  The dispute is the best way to teach it.  I'm not sure any of the methods are working.

When I was 17 my mother told me to go to my parents if I got pregnant & my father would arrange an abortion for me.  Remember, it was illegal back then.  At that very moment I realized I could not have an abortion so I had better not get pregnant. ;D

Pets....
Sugar was our first dog in my life. I think I was 4 when we got her. She was part cocker spaniel and part pointer. She liked to point at buildings.  She was the nicest dog and had a great bark "roof, roof, roo, roo, roo, roof"

There were a number of cats -

Musette - she was all white long haired had a blue eye and a green eye. She died while being spayed...well that was the story, there was also the story that that vet had a white cat with a blue eye and a green eye....

Wally - another all white cat - got hit by a car by one of my mom's friends.

Sonja - another  all white cat (my mom liked all white cats) she was mean. My mom tried some cat birth control shots of some sort. She had one kitten behind the couch. We named him Charlie. My sister got toxoplasmosis and they blamed the cat litter - yeah, like she ever went near the cat litter - anyway we had to give away the cats.  They both went to live on a farm when she was the house cat and I hear she loved it.  She didn't like Sugar at all.

Charlie the poodle was my toy poodle. We got him when I was about 12 because they didn't thing Sugar was going to live much longer - she lived to be 15 years old.  Anyway, Charlie was a great dog. Really laid back.  I adored him. He also lived to be about 15 years old.

My cats - Petey - I got him at a pet store in Los Arcos mall shortly after I moved to Arizona. They gave me a big discount and told me I had to take him that day or it would be too late. I took him home. He was a great cat most of his life until something happened when I had him boarded at University Vet Hospital on Broadway in Tempe. I got 4 different stories about it and I never knew the truth.  He ended up hating everyone in the world except me. He was also about 18 pounds. He was a huge cat.  When I would take him out of his carrier at the vet people would go "OH MY GOD!"  He was a sweetie to me and I adored him.  HE was about 15 when I had to put him to sleep.  I still feel bad about that.

Nilla - you all heard about Mr. Nilla. Got him at the shelter. He was my big lap cat until he went insane.  I do miss him sometimes, but I had no choice.

Callie Sue Marie - she's my soft ball of fur. I adore her.  She has meds three times a day for medical issues, but it seems to be working. She cracks me up.

Boo Boo Ann - She is the funniest cat I have ever seen in my life. She drives me absolutely crazy as she claws my furniture then she bats her eyes and cuddles up with me and I just can't be mean to her.  She is as tiny as Petey was big.

Tomorrow Callie and Boo have to go to the vet for their shots.  They don't know this yet and I don't plan to tell them until we are in the car on the way

We had no real sex education that I remember...except what the neighbor kids told each other.  Then we had the "girls" video in 5th grade, but that was just so we didn't think we were bleeding to death when we got our first period.

DR Jose - what kind of applications have you downloaded on your iPhone?  The MD and I joke that I can play all the auxiliary percussion parts for Into the Woods with "Cowbell Plus" and I just tuned my brothers ukulele with "Stay In Tune".  Also, there is the virtual Rain Stick which is really cool.

The only music app I've downloaded is Karajan.  -My aural skills have always been a little "wanting". But since you've given them a good review on here, I may just add a few more apps.

DR Cilla, my beautiful Sir Lancelot enjoyed going for car rides with me.  He would sit on my shoulder (hey, I was 17) and ride with me.  We often went to the park & curled up under a tree while I read a book.

I think Bosco would have gone anywhere with Belle, she just didn't want to do it on a leash.  The big problem is what to do with the cat once you get there.  A quiet park or the security of the car are fine, not so shops & crowds.

Of course there is no guarantee a new kitten would oblige my expectations for it.  ;D

When I was in the 8th grade, they split up the boys and girls for a special one-day health class.  Our gruff old biology teacher was pushed into service teaching the boys.  I think they showed us some film featuring Mr. Sperm and Mrs. Egg, but the movie was probably made back in the 30's.  Finally the old biology teacher got up in front of all these eager and curious young men and said, "Keep it in your pants, boys.  Just keep it in your pants."

And that was the end of our special health class.

Illegal, but not at all uncommon. The hospital in which I worked in the 50's had row after row of women admitted for D&C's. Middle-class white girls had little trouble terminating unwanted pregnancies (as long as they fessed-up soon enough).

Well... When I was in 8th Grade, Father Cilinski took the boys into the auditorium, and one of the Nuns took the girls into another room. After Father Cilinski basically told us the "facts of life" - complete with his own chalkboard drawings of the male and female genitalia (which were sooooo not drawn to scale, although...), we were shown some "morning after" film that starred David Cassidy.  Needless to say, the film was already a bit dated by the time we were watching it, and was more of a good laugh rather than an educational experience. ;)

I used to take Nilla and later Callie to the lake with me - until Nilla went crazy.   I'm not saying cats don't travel and maybe if they start out always traveling as kittens, they might. But I would never take a cat shopping or to to a place where it could be spooked.  I personally think they are just different from dogs and may actually enjoy a nice nap while the family is away

As far as Obama is concerned, at least(?) he has admitted that the reason he is against "gay marriage" is that he believes that marriage is both a legal and religious commitment.  Which, of course, continues to muddle the whole separation of Church and State issue.  Since most of the "gay marriages" were performed at a court house, conducted by a judge, wouldn't that make them a "legal arrangement"?  And even "straight" marriages still have to be officiated by the State even if a ceremony in a church is held.  Right?

True, but there are also gay men and women who think anything less than full marriage, by that name, is demeaning and a loss of a civil right - and some of them will actively oppose civil unions as a sell-out.

Of course we could solve all of these issues if we got the Government out of the Marriage (a religious sacrament) business and simply provided for non-sex specific civil unions.

Right!  And if they (those religious persons who don't like the idea of gay "marriage") are so concerned about gay people getting "married" because it's a religious term/ceremony, shouldn't they also object to atheists being able to get "married," even by the state??

My thoughts exactly.  My sister got a few trips to the beach in gratitude for taking care of my kids and commuting across town to work from our house.  My 4-legged kids came first (perhaps I should have had a little better perspective), but then they were always there for me-- so why not?!?!?!?!

This took forever & I attempted to keep the details short.

Dogs:
I’ll begin with Keith & my dogs

Romanov-Red Siberian Husky, lived to run until we eventually couldn’t find him

Anastasia-Half sister to Romanov, devoted to Keith.  As dogs go, rather boring but at least she stayed put.

Amaroq-Romanov’s son except they kept fighting so we found him a new home-wish we had kept him & found Romanov the new home.  One of the biggest regrets of my life.

Natasha-Samoyed, not very smart & terrified of storms.  She and Bryan were toddlers together-very cute.

Belle-Extremely smart, my shadow & the best dog we had.   We found her while out walking.  She followed us home.  Anastasia didn’t like her which created a few problems.

Echo-A smaller daintier version of Sherlock. The dog of my heart, almost as smart as Belle.  Her claim to fame-finding my cell phone in the fields with the simple command “pick up”.

Sherlock-You all know our big goofus.

Cats:

Brandy-Semi long haired white cat with orange patches.  He woke me for elementary school on the week days & slept in on the weekends.  I never knew how he figured
that out.  My mother surprised me one day & gave him away.

Sr. Lancelot-gorgeous long haired grey, lightly stripped with white eye liner around the eyes.  I think my mother took him for a ride, where to I don’t know.

Ulysses-An ugly crazy kitten Keith presented me with for my first apartment.  He fell off a pile of laundry in Keith’s arms & broke his leg.  Once that healed he escaped & I never saw him again.

Gaia-After Ulysses I swore I was jinxed & was giving up cats.  Then Gaia begged me to take her home.  She a beautiful long haired tuxedo cat who turned out to be perfect, not a personality flaw in her.  She kept her claws in when playing, was sweet good & kind to all other cats & dogs.  Ok, she had one flaw, the birds she occasionally brought home.

Maria-Gaia’s smart, devoted mainly to me, short haired black kitten

Sinbad- Gaia’s brown stripped, slightly dumb kitten we had to put to sleep at 2 due to constant urinary blockages.

My Sin-After Sinbad died My Sin, short haired tuxedo cat, walked into our apartment & never left.  She & Maria never got along well.  This is the cat that watched over our babies.  Lived longer than any of our other cats, to the ripe old age of 17.

Bosco-Short haired tortie & white, devoted to the dogs

Knudson-Long haired white & buff colored hair-smartest cat we have known.  He was obsessed with food, opened doors & cabinets.

Bogie & Bacall, I wanted Bogie, Craig wanted Bacall so I had to take them both.  Long haired grey with white lined eyes (my favorite look) part Main Coon.

Bacall-the only other cat Bosco ever liked.  I called her sweetness cuz that is what she was.  When she wanted to be pet she was extremely vocal about the fact.
Bogie slept in my arms or between us on the bed.  Of the last four I think he was everyone’s favorite.  He would flop on his back for belly rubs.

Every single one of these cats came when called.

Right!  And if they (those religious persons who don't like the idea of gay "marriage") are so concerned about gay people getting "married" because it's a religious term/ceremony, shouldn't they also object to atheists being able to get "married," even by the state??

;)

Try telling them you'll give up gay marriage if they'll give up divorce!

I wouldn't not post because you don't want to burden people. Nobody here cares if you complain.

I know a great many gay men who prefer that never be called marriage.  They are more interested in the civil rights involved.

In that case, from the AP   GAY MARRIAGE McCain: Opposes constitutional amendment to ban it. Says same-sex couples should be allowed to enter into legal agreements for insurance and similar benefits, and states should decide about marriage. Supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and gives states the right to refuse to recognize such marriages.

I don't like the Defense of Marriage Act - which Biden voted for as well, but his legal agreement language sounds a lot like a civil union to me

True, but there are also gay men and women who think anything less than full marriage, by that name, is demeaning and a loss of a civil right - and some of them will actively oppose civil unions as a sell-out.

Of course we could solve all of these issues if we got the Government out of the Marriage (a religious sacrament) business and simply provided for non-sex specific civil unions.

der Brucer

I think the government should butt out of a lot of issues

Great pet stories.  My cats come when I call, too and Boo is there when I wake up.  I finally figured out she knows I'm awake because I stop snoring

Don't know why I'm talking about marriage....I don't see why ANYONE would want to get married.

I began my evening with KILL BILL Vol. 1. It's certainly over-the-top, and deliberately so. All the murders are as believable as those in TRANSFORMERS or any chop-socky movie.

In terms of fun, I enjoyed it about a thousand times more than I did PULP FICTION which just made me feel dirty and creepy and damaged. Despite all the killing, this is far more stylish and, yes, fun.

And now I can see why part II is longer than Part I. She only checked two of the five names on her hit list, so she has three more people to kill.

Next, I went ahead and broke open the season four set of MEDIUM and began watching. I got two episodes watched. The first was that desperately sad story of the child abducted and found in a toy box. A good mystery but a real downer to start the season.

I had also forgotten how short and mean-spirited Anjelica Huston's character was with Allison. She wanted instant results and got furious when they weren't forthcoming.

That second episode was the one with Ariel dreaming about being her mother's best friend in high school trying to sneak off to a concert while they were underaged. I did love how the disturbing dream of Ariel trapped in a wrecked car worked out later in the show.

Next I watched MAD MEN from last Sunday. I still hate the Bobbi character and simply do not understand Don's infatuation with her. Peggy is going through some interesting transformations this season. Nice to see that character growing.

THE SHIELD had a wow season opener. As always, there are plots happening on top of plots, but having just watched season six last week, everything was crystal clear in my mind during the episode. Nice beginning for its final season.

Happy Foster Cat Story (regarding cats traveling):

There was a bunch of feral (wild) cats that had been trapped and fixed that the director was taking back where they came from (an orange orchard, I think). She heard purring, and discovered that one of the "feral" cats was just purring away in the backseat. She thought that perhaps this one was a tame stray that found its way to the feral colony.

They brought her to us to see if she was indeed tame. We called her "Sybil" and discovered that she liked riding in the car (!).  She was adopted by a retired couple with an RV and got to travel.

Back from dinner and show, about which more later.

I am quite curious to read your reactions and comments about this production. Especially in regards to Billy Porter's reconception of the musical arrangements. And of Ledisi too (whom I like on record).
