Sitcoms’ Burden: Too Few Taboos
...
The humor in “Worst Week” is rooted in a ceaseless and escalating cascade of embarrassing mishaps that pile upon its Seth Rogen-ish hero, Sam (Kyle Bornheimer), when he and his girlfriend try to tell her disapproving parents that she is pregnant. It would be churlish to reveal Sam’s ordeals in detail, but nudity, vomit and urine flow freely.

Topic of the Day: "The End."
;)

So, has any book ever actually ended with "The End" or is just used in the movies?
-
I read Mickey Spillane's I, THE JURY when it first came out.
I was really too young to be reading that kind of trash.
In fact, I don't think my parents even knew I had a copy of the book.
The one line that I've always remembered, though this may be a paraphrase is:
"She hooked her thumbs in her panties and pulled them down."
For a pre-teenager back in the early 1950s, that was pretty damn hot.
::)
-
And on that note (e-flat), I'm going to bed. Good night, Der Brucer and Druxy...and guests.
But before I go, Happy Birthday to mrkdl73, whose last of 38 posts was at 6:27:14 am on January 07, 2005.

Rex Stout "GAMBIT" (A Nero Wolfe mystery)
"Mr. Wolfe is in the middle of a fit. It's complicated. There's a fireplace in the front room, but it's never lit because he hates open fires. He says they stullify mental processes. But it's lit now, because he's using it. He's seated in front of it, on a chair too small for him, tearing sheets out of a book and burning them. The book is the new edition, the third edition, of Webster's New International Dictionary, Unabridged, published by the G. & C. Merriam Company of Springfield, Massachussets. He considers it subversive because it threatens the integrity of the English language...."
Then at the end of chapter one, Archie says to Wolfe,
"You knew you were going to burn it when you bought it. Otherwise you would have ordered leather."

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

Good morning, all! Most of my day will be spent attending an orchestra reading of the complete score to the Kern-Hammerstein MUSIC IN THE AIR, which Encores! will be presenting in the spring. Around 9 am, I will walk down to Clinton Studios on West 55th Street. On the way back, I'll stop at the pharmacy to pick up some meds.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.

A favourite line of mine from Terry Pratchett's novel THUD:
"You can't do bad things and call yourselves the good guys."
BK, not having TIVO (and not wanting yet another time-wasting machine in my house) I caught HOSTILE WITNESS on TCM the other night after watching half of VICTIM (a really interesting film I'd like to see all of sometime) and stayed up till almost 4:00 in the morning watching it. Like Bob Osborne, I didn't even know it existed...though I was quite well aware of the play. HOSTILE WITNESS was the first play that I myself bought a ticket for and didn't see as part of a school outing. I saw it at the Shubert Theatre (alas, now no more) in Cincinnati in 1967. Milland was starring; Melville Cooper played the judge (The role in the film played by the undying Felix Aymler). I even took a date. I remember liking the play and it had had a successful run on Broadway and the West End.
The film is a bit hoary. Ray in a bad toupe and whatever of his real hair is badly dyed. He looks long-in-the-tooth and tired. His eyes look like he's still playing in The Man with The X-Ray Eyes. Unfortunately, the playwright who adapted his play made it a bit flatulent when trying to open it up for film. The first twenty minutes of the movie where accidents, murders, and koshing happen isn't even in the play which basically starts out with solicitor Milland calling his team together and telling them he's about to be "arrested for murder". It all worked a little better as a play.
The play hasn't been much revived; probably because of its large cast, though I do remember a dinner theatre I was playing at advertising it for another of their theatres, starring Craig Stevens.

Today is the first day in literally weeks (maybe months) that I have not had a pile of review discs to plow through. I know that probably sounds like whining, but MattH will most likely concur that there's at least a modicum of pressure to watch, reasonably analyze and cogently write about all this stuff, and sometimes it can be a bit of a chore. So today I am working on charts for various groups and will probably have a nice workout at the gym.
I'm really looking forward to the debate this Friday!
-
Nice to see DR Dan (the Man) back among us. Welcome!

We had an absolutely torrential downpour for about 5 minutes yesterday--the first sizable rain we've had here in months! A friend of ours was driving on the freeway when it happened and she said traffic pretty much stopped because visibility was so poor.

More than a little pressure when the box sets build up. September and November are my heavy months for TV box sets, so I run myself ragged trying to get to everything. This deluge will let up in a couple of weeks when I've gotten through all of last season's releases. I still have FIRDAY THE 13th and NUMBERS to go.
-
Re: The End. I've always thought it strange that movies seemingly needed to advertise their completion. Wouldn't the audience pretty much figure it out once the screen went black and the house lights came up? ;)
-
Yes, boxed sets are the worst, and that seems to be pretty much all I get. ;) Of course, I choose a lot of them, so I can't blame Jose, as much as I'd like to.

DR Dan(the Man) - Welcome back!!! You've been missed around here!
-
For some reason, The Other Boleyn Girl is showing up on my review queue, which means it will be mailed today. Hasn't that been out for a long time? I'm wondering if maybe it's a new Blu-Ray version--sometimes the database guy forgets to notate if it's HD or not.

The only way to watch the Emmys when they don't choose a decent host (as in the last two years) is to speed through them as I did last night. I watch tons of TV so unlike bk I knew everyone there, but the winners are what's important to me: not the clothes, the dates with the celebrities, or the (lack of) production.
I was disappointed in a few of the winners. I think 30 ROCK is overpraised. At its best, it's very funny, but it wasn't at its best last season certainly not near the end when they came back from the strike. THE OFFICE is much more consistently hilarious to me.
I was pleased that new shows like MAD MEN, PUSHING DAISIES, DAMAGES, BREAKING BAD at least went home with something.
But another Emmy for Jeremy Piven in ENTOURAGE? Nope, not deserved.
At least James Spader wasn't given another Emmy for BOSTON LEGAL. I'd rather have seen Michael C. Hall win for DEXTER, but Brian Cranston's surprise win (the biggest surprise of the night) wasn't a bad choice at all.

NBC - a night of HEROES: an one hour recap and a two hour premiere
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS, BOSTON LEGAL

I watched about 60 seconds of the Emmys, catching the Laugh-In reunion, which, to me anyway, was kind of sad. Alan Sues did not look human, IMHO.
-
I also noticed that the DVR had picked up the Starz broadcast of that Michael Caine-Jude Law version of SLEUTH. Don't know when I'll get to it, but I will be watching it at some point, just to see how wildly a remake can go wrong.

Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I actually found myself quite wide awake around 5:00am... And then since I had meant to make a drug store (a.k.a. Duane Reade) run yesterday, well... So, I did some early morning shopping... Then stopped for a bagel at Absolute Bagel (which really was a true bagel epiphany!)... Then came back here and listened to some Beethoven for a while (Gilels playing the sonatas)... Then went back to bed for a few more hours... And now...

Experts in Antwerp, Belgium who analyzed the 478-carat stone determined it to be of the highest color grading available for a white diamond, said a statement from Gem Diamonds Ltd., the company that found the stone.

I am back from a nice workout, and I scored a clearance DVR/VHS unit at Fred's. We have been fighting with a POS (technical term) Sony unit for years and with several upcoming shows I don't want to miss, I sprung for a new one--$135 on clearance! Works like a charm.

Nope, Ginny. We've just been hearing about a certain young lady for quite some time now, and you seem to like her.
Yes, we do like her - very much. And they've been together now for a year and a half.

I watched the final four episodes of last season yesterday afternoon/evening on MOJO in HD! Thrilling. I had forgotten SO MUCH and it was all very intense.
I'm very eager to see tonight's season premiere.
I know what you mean about forgetting stuff. Even after watching the recap show (it was on here last night) i still don't totally remember how everything ended. If you feel like it could you briefly say the things you forgot (cause i'm sure i forgot them too).
Btw, re: the 8pm HEROES that is on tonight. I wouldn't really call it a recap show. It basically has most of the cast on the red carpet for the first screening of the 2 hour premiere (in front of many fans).
The stars of the show basically just introduce stuff including new clips that have not been seen before.
Also they go through each character one by one. So it's more of a series overview for each character as opposed to what happened at the end of last season.
I am excited for tonight. Although i may only watch the first hour.
I'm adding this to my post. I just went back and re-read the recap on the last show. I don't even remember half of this stuff. So much happened!

Eva Longaria looked really cute in that silver mini with the bow.
And i loved jennifer love hewitt's black and white dress. Maybe her hair was a bit much. but her dress was lovely.
I will agree with cynthia nixon's dress which i didn't like.

A nice lunch out and pretty quick, too, since I was able to get back and get some important viewing accomplished.

I thought I only had five CSI: NY episodes to watch, but it was six because I watched four this afternoon and there are still two left.
All good episodes and one great one involving kidnapped children and a fire.
-
There was one bonus feature on disc five, on artist Clemente Bornacelli who contributed three paintings for one of the episodes. Interesting to actually get to look at the paintings since they went by in a flash in the actual episode.
-
As I said, I have two episodes left plus the season wrap-up on disc six. I should easily be able to finish these when I go back down, long before HEROES comes on. I might be able to watch either MICHAEL CLAYTON or SLEUTH (probably teh latter; I think it's shorter) before I tune into HEROES at 9:30 or so.
-
I also had time to skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest and nothing in the previews either.

"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived it at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.
People everywhere brag and whimper about the woes of their early years, but nothing can compare with the Irish version; the poverty; the shiftless loquacious alcoholic father; the pious defeated mother moaning by the fire; pompous priests; bullying schoolmasters; the English and the terrible things they did to us for eight hundred long years.
Above all—we were wet.”

USA TODAY (http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-09-21-early-voting_N.htm)
Early voting starts today in some states
FAIRFAX, Va. — Voters by the thousands will begin casting ballots for president this week in an early voting process that's expected to set records this year.
Residents of Virginia, Kentucky and Georgia are among the first in the nation eligible to vote in person, as well as by mail. During the next few weeks, at least 34 states and the District of Columbia will allow early in-person voting for Nov. 4 elections.
Experts such as Paul Gronke of the Early Voting Information Center predict nearly a third of the electorate will vote early this year, up from 15% in 2000 and 20% in 2004. In closely contested Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, about half the voters are expected to cast ballots before Election Day. Florida could be 40%.
"It's a sea change," says Rosemary Rodriguez, head of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. "This is a little bit astounding."
It's all part of the most extensive early voting process in history. The campaigns of Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are already focused on getting voters to the polls, even as their general election contest is taking shape — and before any of the debates.
TRANSLATION: The election may already be decided before the last debates, and before anybody votes on Election Day.

I've returned from a lovely day of socializing and listening to Jerome Kern. MUSIC IN THE AIr has a lot of music and the orchestra got through all of Act One under the leadership of the mighty wonderful Rob Berman before the lunch break. The second act ran from 2-4. I sat with Josh Clayton, the mighty music prep master at Encores!, and his brother Jeremy with one set of full scores, and the R&H office sat next to us with another set of scores. There were lots of nice surpise visits from Don Oliver, an old friend from Chelsea Music Service, Kern estate attorney Andy Boose, Alice Hammerstein, Oscar's daughter, and others.

Well the "between 10:30 and 12:30" for the roto rooter man ended up being 2:45 and they were very grumpy that I had called several times. Oh well. I've actually unclogged it 5 or 6 times in the past 6 months. It needed to be cleared professionally. I'm glad I did it.
We had horrible clogged drain problems for the first several months we lived in this house. The house had been vacant for several years and personally I think leaves and other debris had gotten stuck in the pea trap, leading to the clog. For about a year after we moved in, we had some problems if we didn't thoroughly use the disposal--if we didn't run the water long enough, stuff would get clogged in the basement and we'd get food chunks, et al., backing up into the laundry room. Thankfully that hasn't happened now for several years.
-
This seems too early. The votes won't be counted until election day-right?
I believe tabulation is held until election day. (In CA, absentee ballots were counted starting at the opening of the polls - and suspended when the actual polling data arrived at the Registrars - and resumed when the polling place ballot count was complete). The current results of the Absentee Ballot tabulation were released when the polls closed.

Factcheck.org has an interesting timeline & info regarding "the bridge to nowhere"
Palin supported it even after McCain denounced it, then blamed "inaccurate portrayals" when she canceled it for lack of money. Obama and Biden voted for the big transportation bill that contained it. McCain's vote was one of four against. Our time line gives full details.
We've written about the Gravina Access Project, also known as the Bridge to Nowhere, several times – first back in November when John McCain used it as an example of pork-barrel spending, again this month when we looked at Sarah Palin's convention speech, and finally in a post on the FactCheck Wire. But there are still misunderstandings and distortions floating around, and we're still getting questions about them.
For instance, on Sept. 14 McCain campaign spokeswoman Carly Fiorina erroneously told ABC News, "The facts are that Sarah Palin rejected the money for the bridge to nowhere." And Palin herself is still claiming credit for defeating the bridge, most recently at a campaign rally in Nevada. As NBC's Matthew Berger reports, Palin reiterated a line that's becoming a familiar refrain:
NBC News, Sept. 13: Palin has come under fire in recent days for misleadingly saying she told Congress “thanks but no thanks,” refusing an earmark for a bridge to a sparsely inhabited island in her home state. Independent groups and media fact-checkers have said Palin advocated for the federal earmark before opposing it, only ended after Congress had essentially killed it, and kept the $223 million for the appropriation after the project was killed.
Palin had cut the refrain from her speech during her three-day visit to Alaska. But she came back to it today, citing it as an example of earmark reform she and McCain would push for in the White House.
“I told Congress thanks but no thanks to that Bridge to Nowhere – that if our state wanted to build that bridge, we would build it ourselves," she said.
Meanwhile, we're also getting questions about Obama's and Biden's positions on the Bridge to Nowhere – did they vote in favor of the original earmarked legislation? In an attempt to forestall further repetition of misinformation, we present the Bridge to Nowhere time line:
July 2005: Congress votes on a bill authorizing funding for highways. The bill includes funds earmarked for the Gravina bridge and the less-famous Knik Arm bridge. Both bridges go to low-population areas and are labeled "bridges to nowhere." Sen. McCain makes an impassioned speech on the floor decrying both bridges and dozens of other projects he considers unnecessary. About the Gravina bridge, he says:
McCain (July 29, 2005): We figure it is about $80 million. It could be a lot more than that. Guess how many people live on the Gravina Island? Fifty; five-zero. I don’t know what that works out to per capita, but it is about a million-something per person at least.
Biden and Obama vote for the $286.4 billion highway bill, with the Gravina bridge and the other projects included. McCain and only three others vote against it. The highway bill passes 91 - 4 with five not voting.
October 2005: Sen. Tom Coburn proposes an amendment to a bill making appropriations for transportation. The amendment would strip the earmarked funds from the Gravina and Knik Arm bridges and commit them to the rebuilding of the Twin Spans bridge in Louisiana, which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Obama and Biden vote against the amendment. McCain is not present. The amendment fails 82 - 15 with three not voting.
Instead, the revised appropriations bill strips the earmarks from the bridges and allots that money to the Alaska Department of Transportation with no strings attached. The money may, but need not, be used to build the bridges. It can also be used for other transportation-related projects.
THOMAS summary, H.R. 3058: (Sec. 186) Makes available to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities for eligible surface transportation projects, subject to specified conditions, any amounts otherwise available under SAFETEA-LU for the Gravina Island bridge and the Knik Arm bridge.
McCain is not present to vote on the revised bill. Obama and Biden both vote in favor of it, and the bill passes 93 - 1 with six not voting.
2005 and 2006: The Bridge to Nowhere becomes a symbol for government pork, helped in no small part by McCain's anti-earmark enthusiasm. McCain mentions the bridge in interviews and speeches. In November 2006, in a speech to a conservative political action committee, he blames midterm election losses on earmarks including the bridge: ''Those and other earmarks passed by a Republican Congress included $50 million for an indoor rain forest, $500,000 for a teapot museum; $350,000 for an Inner Harmony Foundation and Wellness Center; and of course, as you all know, $223 million for a bridge to nowhere. I didn't see these projects in the fine print of the Contract with America, and neither did the voters.''
September 2006: Palin, campaigning for governor, tells the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce that she supports the bridge and would use the money from Congress for the Gravina Access Project. The bridge would connect Ketchikan to Gravina Island, replacing a ferry and improving access to the Ketchikan airport.
Palin, Sept. 2006: The money that’s been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done. This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.
Palin reiterates her support to other groups and news sources during her campaign. For instance, an Anchorage Daily News poll asks candidates whether they would continue state funding for the bridge. Palin answers in Oct. 2006: "Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now – while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."
August 2007: McCain says money wasted on the Gravina Access Project could have been used to prevent the Minnesota bridge collapse. "Maybe if we had done it right, maybe some of that money would have gone to inspect those bridges and other bridges around the country," McCain said. "Maybe the 200,000 people who cross that bridge every day would have been safer than spending $233 million of your tax dollars on a bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it."
September 2007: Palin announces that Alaska will not be building the Gravina bridge, in part because not enough money has been forthcoming from Congress.
Palin (Sept. 2007): Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island. Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.
The money from Congress is diverted to other transportation projects. Construction on the Knik Arm bridge continues.
2007 and 2008: McCain continues to invoke the bridge on the stump, in debates and in campaign advertisements. For instance, CQ Weekly quotes him at a campaign rally in South Carolina in Jan. 2008: "Now, which would you rather do? Have the bridge to nowhere in Alaska, a $233 million bridge to an island with 50 people on it, or a $1,000 tax credit for every child in America?" We fact-check a campaign ad in which McCain exaggerates his contributions to defeating pork projects including the bridge.
The digested version of the time line:
* Palin expressed support for the bridge while running for office.
* Congress removed earmarks for both bridges long before Palin was elected.
* While campaigning, Palin still made statements supporting the Gravina bridge, which had no earmarks at that time.
* Palin chose not to use the money for the Gravina bridge but kept it for other projects, including the Knik Arm bridge.
* Biden and Obama voted for the authorization bill, which included the earmarks, and the final appropriations bill, which didn't. McCain voted against the authorization but was not present for the vote on the appropriations bill.
* Biden and Obama voted against redirecting the money intended for Alaska to Louisiana. McCain did not vote.
Interesting McCain was against it while Biden & Oboma voted for it.

I can't quite place that quote...but I know I've heard it somewhere before. ;)
It usually follows one of your observations.

Back from a spectacularly spectacular lunch at Langer's - had my pastrami with cole slaw and Russian dressing, a bite of chopped liver, a bite of kishka, and a tiny piece of a lattke - all great. Again, the sandwiches, unlike most delis, are actually not humungously huge. I then took books to Mystery and Imagination and now I have returned.
You've been to two of my favourite places in one day! Langer's and Mystery & Imagination. I hate you! How are Christine and Malcolm these days?
-
All caught up from the last 6 days or so of notes. I'm not even going to attempt the posts!
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to DR ELMORE and DR LAURA. Hope your day was exciting.
Update - "Into the Woods" is open - thank goodness. We are still in escrow for the house and the closing date is supposedly set for Oct 10. If it changes, we're up the creek as we are planning down to the second as Mom and I are on a plane for Walt Disney World on Oct 12 - a vacation that was planned WAY before a house was in the future. We have a plan set, so let's hope it all works out.
That's all... now to catch up on today's posts
-
DR Matthew, BEST WISHES ALL WORKS OUT, IN TIME FOR YOUR TRIP!

They're doing great and were pleased to see your blurb on the book.

Oh, yes, favorite book quotes, and we haven't had nearly enough:

It was great to see Dan the Man posting again. I am sorry that I missed him.

It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, mid-October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills. I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn't care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars.

DR MBarnum's interview in VideoWatchdog is a most excellent read! I urge ever DR to pick up a copy.

Benjamin was doodling on a piece of notebook paper, and when Mrs. MacDonald said "Switzerland," Benjamin wrote it down. He looked at it curiously, crossed out the "Sw" and replaced it with a "Kr" and voila, suddenly it said Kritzerland.
Kritzerland - Benjamin loved that. With just a tiny switch in letters, he'd invented his very own actual country. He began to think of what it would be like in Kritzerland. A country where everything would be the way he wanted it to be. Right then and there he decided the official food of Kritzerland would not be brisket. No, it would be a Fosters Freeze cheeseburger (his new favorite, since Kentucky Boys had closed its doors). That was a fine official food. The official dessert would be a Helms chocolate donut. In Kritzerland, everyone would use spelled-backwards words - for example, instead of being a citizen, a person would be a nezitic. And any nezitic who didn't play by the rules would be banished to Airebis. Just like money had an official motto ("In God We Trust") so Kritzerland would have an official motto: "What Is It, Fish?"
BK - Kritzerland
Self-serving, I know, and I have one more from Kritzerland - a short paragraph but one of my faves that I've written.
-
This paragraph occurs after Benjamin has seen North By Northwest in Hollywood - he comes out of the theater and it's pouring rain. He takes brief shelter in Pickwick Bookshop.
Benjamin came out of Pickwick, ran one more block to Highland and got there just as his bus was pulling up. It was a wonderful bus ride home, seeing all the different streets with the rain coming down, people scurrying about with their umbrellas, colors blurring crazily on the rain-soaked pavement, as if someone had washed the street with hundreds of watercolors.

Good Evening!
I'm back from a nice dinner and a nice, long walk around the Upper West Side. What another wonderful Fall evening it is here in NYC!
-
Benjamin couldn't believe it - the Stadium, his favorite neighborhood movie theater, had closed its doors. The Stadium, with its beautiful curtains lit with a brilliant wash of rainbow colors. The Stadium - where Benjamin had first tasted buttered popcorn and Flicks and Bon-Bons and frozen U-No Bars. The Stadium, where he'd seen so many wonderful movies, where he'd sat in his tenth-row aisle-seat for as long as he could remember, where Susan Pomeroy had first scratched the inside of his arm, where he'd sat with Paul Daley seeing movie after movie, where he'd seen the glories of VistaVision and Cinemascope and Technicolor and heard the glories of Stereophonic Sound, where he'd gone on adventures with cowboys and Indians and adventurers and plunderers and heroes and villains, where he'd gone on a voyage with Sinbad, where he'd journeyed to the center of the earth, where he'd traveled on a time machine to the future, where he'd seen those blonde children with the weird eyes, where he'd visited other worlds, other lands, and met the most wonderful characters and gotten lost in hundreds of movie moments that he could recall as if he'd seen them all yesterday. But now there would be no more movie moments at the Stadium because Temple B'nai David had bought the Stadium and taken away Benjamin's palace of dreams forever.
They were quite sudden, the tears in Benjamin's eyes. They came out of nowhere and they fell silently on his face while he stared at the dark marquee. He stood there for quite some time, then he walked home.

I may have missed the posting,

Yes, I did. Thank you! :)

I believe DR William E. Lurie is the only one to have seen it so far. Oh, maybe even DR FJL. However, I think I came across a song listing on the BroadwayWorld message boards.
-
DR TD, thank you for the nice words on my Rodd Dana interview in VIDEO WATCHDOG. He is a neat guy.

OMG!! I'm still at work and the Heroes retrospective is starting! I must be going. Be back later...much later!
-
Well... Me sleepy...
Goodnight.

Very restless right now.

I was able to finish the two remaining CSI: NY episodes, and I remembered as I watched the season finale just how wonderful it was (filled with twists) and now I'll all primed for the season premiere on Wednesday.
-
WUSSBURGERING by eight-thirty. Marvelous.
-
The last featurette was really a summation of the major events of the season, so it's good that it was placed on the last disc as it contains spoilers for all of the major season surprises.
-
Tomorrow I'll be watching THE FOUR FIST WAY (I know; I'd never heard of it either) unless something more important arrives in the mail (I got no new review copies today).
-
I haven't seen ENTER LAUGHING at the York, either.

And one for Reiner

Next, I decided to open my Blu-ray set of HEROES - Season 2 and watch that season's final episode just to put the show, its characters, and the ending storyline back in my head. I'm so glad I did as I felt right up to date once I had finished.
And let me just say WOW, WOW, WOW!!! (That's three HELLO, DOLLY "Wows") for the picture and sound quality of the Blu-ray. I could count every pore in the face of every actor on the show. I have NEVER seen anything that sharp before on my set. Certainly none of the other Blu-ray TV box sets have had picture quality that astonishing.
Needless to say, when the network HD broadcast happened, it wasn't nearly as sharp (though it looked quite nice.)
-
I also watched the alternate ending that had been planned for Season 2 which was quite interesting as well.
-
Then I watched tonight's HEROES 2-hour season premiere. Looks like it's going to be quite fascinating with all these evil villains, people seeming to switch sides and allegiances, and the return of some folks from before. I thoughtly enjoyed the two hours (well, actually about 85 minutes).
I think the show is on the right track to be something special once again.
-
I did stop and watch a couple of NBC promos for THE OFFICE, LIFE, and MY OWN WORST ENEMY. Can't wait for the first two to start back up again.
-
Heading downstairs now to read a bit and then go to bed.
Good night!
-
I wonder if JR has seen that Robert Wagner and Barbara Stanwyck were playing "hide the iceberg" on the set of "Titanic."

I feel odd asking this, but I feel someone is using the amazon review system unethically with respect to the Last Starfighter CD and I don't know what else to do, so I'm appealing to the folks here. It seems that someone who didn't like the workshop of Last Starfighter in Issaquah, WA decided to post a terrible one-star review for the CD on amazon, and based on the date it appeared it seems to have been a response to the workshop rather than the CD. If anyone who really liked the CD has some time, would you post a review on amazon.com. I think the one-star review is something of a fraud since it's obvious that it was posted based on the workshop rather than a direct response to the CD, and we oddly only have four reviews on amazon. (including Larry's, thank you Larry. And Debby, thanks for posting on cdbaby.)
Many thanks to anyone who liked the CD and is willing to post a review.
-
DR FJL, I think that you can report that review to Amazon.com and have them removie it since it seems to not have anything to do with the CD
-
Finally, I figured out how to make a photo album on my FACEBOOK page.
-
Thanks for the thought, MBarnum. I clicked to report as inappropriate, but they don't ask for an explanation, and I have no proof except that the person posted his review in response to the workshop based on the dates, and the guy cleverly referenced the CD material.
Of course, it would be much better to have more reviews of the CD on amazon. I have no idea why we only have had three reviews besides the defrauder!!! Thanks to anyone who's willing to post a review to help balance out the defrauder's impact on the average.
-
Has anyone watched my news report yet? Did you watch & not find it funny, therefore no comment?
Those kind of video links do not work well for us poor folk with dial-up.

Factcheck.org has an interesting timeline & info regarding "the bridge to nowhere"Interesting McCain was against it while Biden & Oboma voted for it.
I don't fault Obama/Biden - attempts to diddle with one earmark in a majpr appropriation bill would open up a Pandora's box of Congressional in-fighting.

FJL, you can absolutely have it removed - some putz did that for Rewind - someone who follows me around trying to cause me grief wherever I go - I reported it, gave an explanation that it was someone who hadn't even read the book (obvious because of the stupid way he wrote his "review") and amazon removed it within ten minutes.
-
I've written a review of TLS. Now, if only I could get Cilla and vixmom to write theirs for Murder At The Grove, but that is seemingly The Impossible Dream.

Only to a pedant, baby. Rules, in case you haven't heard, were meant to be broken, and in case you haven't read a book in the last ten years, they're being broken in much worse ways than that. I will never sacrifice style or voice for pedantry. In other words, I like it the way I wrote it and given the reaction to the Kritzer books, so did mostly everyone else. I haz spoken. Thank the Lord I have someone like Margaret as my muse, and not someone like you - she would never have let me touch anything in that paragraph and she's right. You, on the other hand would have rapped my knuckles and told me to "fix" it.

I enjoy your style and voice - wouldn't change a word. I just wish you'd punctuate the prose the way that you would read it aloud. When I read, I mentally hear voices, and visually see pictures. The way you punctuate leaves my inner voice breathless!

And that's the way we like it! I do try and punctuate the way I talk and the way my eye would like a sentence to read - in the Kritzer books I constantly fought one of the proofers who wanted so many damn commas it just drove me crazy because it breaks the flow of the line, even though they're correct. I do them when it doesn't break the flow, but I tend to sacrifice them for flow.
