A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody
Always
Blue Skies

All of which, recorded on 78s, got lots of play when I was a lad.

(My mother did a ballet dance to the first one for school talent shows - in those days, the parents put on the shows for the kids.)

Good morning, all! I have a walk about 10:30 am to the Lincoln Center NYPL, followed by physical therapy. After that, it's back to the church job, which I want to finish by the weekend, and Act one (still!) of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

This morning I ordered 20 storage cartons to continue packing up the next shipment of materials to Ohio, I sent DR Ginny's DH Richard birthday felicitations on his Facebook page, and now I'm exhausted.

Re last night's nativity discussion, I was a shepherd in Sunday school around the age of 6, and Ginny's DH Richard and I were two of the magi in a 1973 production of John Arden's wonderful Christmas play THE BUSINESS OF GOOD GOVERNMENT. Herod's dilemma is that it's the business of good government to insure peace on earth, but it seems an impossible task, what with claims of a new king being born to confiscate your throne.

So, to Irving Berlin:
It's A Lovely Day Tomorrow
You Can't Get A Man With A Gun and every song in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN
Face the Music and Dance
White Christmas
Easter Parade

I've always been partial to Putting On The Ritz and I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket...the "putting" songs I guess.  In fact, I like all of the score to FOLLOW THE FLEET.

But let's talk my least favourite Irving Berlin songs...A couple of friends and I have an annual argument during WHITE CHRISTMAS as to which is the worst Irving Berlin song..."We'll Follow The Old Man" or "What Do You Do With a General", personally I think the latter...but "Mr. Monotony" may top both of them.

I've always disliked the song "ALWAYS" intensely.

It must have srizzled early this morning since the ground was slightly damp when I went out to get the newspaper. Not getting out of the 50s today, and rain is slated to be off and on all day. So basically, it's a fairly miserably day here.

But none of that is going to get me down unless Best Buy is sold out of Disney tins when I get there.

DR MBarnum, you have to BUY two of the tins to get the discount of 2/$40. Buying one doesn't get you a $20 sale. The price for one is $24.99.

BTW, the sale is available on-line as well.

I still have CSI: NY and LAW & ORDER on the DVR. Depending on how many ODD COUPLE episodes I get finished before UGLY BETTY comes on, I may be able to get one or both of those watched prior to the start of prime time tonight.

Well...still, you would think Best Buy would have had at least one sign indicating the 2 for $40 special :(

I guess I should have asked a clerk.

Of course perhaps there was no room for proper signage, what with the shrunken DVD section that our store now has. It used to be huge!

(although the Anime and Blue Ray sections are bigger then ever).

I was totally clueless about what the Annette tin would be all about.  I thought it would be a series of vignettes from several years of "The Mickey Mouse Club", plus songs, etc.

My favorite Irving Berlin song?

I'd have to pick all of the songs everybody else has listed, plus LET ME SING AND I'M HAPPY.

I really wanted to use that in my 1-person Al Jolson play several years ago, but the Berlin estate would not give permission.

DR Jane:  Re: The Facebook requests.  You can, of course, click on "Ignore".  I'm sure "I" won't be offended that several of them are from me.

Of course, they're all just a bunch of flowers for your "L'il Green Patch" which, as it turns out, costs you nothing.  And you'll be saving precious square footage of the Amazon rainforests for accepting (and even sending some to others).

And there may be a few creatures for your "L'il Blue Cove"...again, costs you nothing, saves rain forest, and foments good will and cheer among the folks doing all the sending.

Of course, there are a lot of folks out there who don't have the time to fool with that sort of thing.  I realize and appreciate that.

And ANNETTE was my all time favorite Mickey Mouse Club serial as well. And the dresses they wore...never saw so many petticoats in my life...well, not since FEMALE ON THE BEACH.

Female on the Beach! I love that movie! When, oh when, is it coming to DVD?

Joan to Jeff:
"You're about as friendly as a suction pump."
"I wouldn't have you if you were hung with diamonds, upside down!"

A true cinematic classic.

Wow, so you like Annette better than the various permutation of Spin and Marty? Color me taken aback. Did Annette have horses? Campfire singing? A wacky English butler sidekick?

No? I rest my case.

RE: Always...I can understand your antipathy. It's insistently winsome, isn't it?

Which season of Odd Couple?

I watched most of the fourth season recently (library copy). I hadn't seen the show for a million years, and was pleased to find it still very funny. Especially the "fear of flying" episode...that practically had me on the floor!

Felix insists he can lip-read what one of the pilots is saying to the other: "I much fear trouble in the fuselage, Frederick."

Oh! And the one with Jaye P. Morgan in it...the one that has Felix writing that swingin' tune, "Happy and Peppy and Bursting with Love." And Jaye P. sings it at the end!

Fun, fun.

Favorite Berlin songs -

-from one of my all time favorite Christmas movies-
Snow
Count Your Blessings
The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing
Sisters (I sang this as a duet with my own sister for a vocal competition in middle school)

-I was raised on Fred/Ginger/Judy movies as a kid, so I have to include -
Isn't It A Lovely Day
Cheek to Cheek
Stepping out with my baby
A Couple Of Swells

I'm in the mood for some Berlin now.  I wonder if it's too early in the season to watch White Christmas...

Actually, I believe English was the original language for the oratorio.

Almost...

Haydn was asked by his one his London "fans" - an impresario - to set an oratorio based on the text of a poem, "The Creation of the World".  (A text which Handel was offered, but refused.)  Haydn took the text back to Vienna, and then had it reset - translated by a friend/mentor/benefactor.  Haydn then composed his music according to the German text.  However, once the German text was set, that was translated back into English - not very well, since it was done metrically; and neither Haydn nor his translator were that fluent in English.  However, it has been noted that Haydn preferred that "Die Schöpfung" to be performed in English, as "The Creation" in English-speaking countries.

...Ah, the things one remembers from Music History Class... And I also sang the piece as "The Creation" in high school, and "Die Schöpfung" in college.  -And I do prefer the German. ;)

I believe you can watch last week's show at nbc.com. It's called jackpot:

http://www.nbc.com/Life/video/episodes/

Or here is a summary below, although at the beginning of the episode they sort of remind you of a few things from past shows:

Season 2, Episode 7: Jackpot
Original Air Date—5 November 2008
Charlie and Dani investigate the murder of Hannah Ronson who was found sitting at her dining room table stabbed to death. She had only been in Los Angeles for a few months and was obviously quite well off. They trace her to the LWA, the Lottery Winners Anonymous a support group for people who have trouble coping with their large lottery wins. Several of the members had a relationship with Hannah and all live an odd lifestyle, given their wealth. Turns out Hannah had a secret of her own. In his own case, Rachel Seybolt moves in with Charlie and Ted Earley; Dani's father Jack Reese disappears. Captain Tidwell continues to pursue Dani.

I suspect they'll simply be pulled. Most networks don't air unpoular shows; they cut their losses and let the stuff sit on the shelf. They may air them in the summer if a hole opens on the schedule, and if the DVDs are made available, all the filmed episodes will be there.

I find the show a bit "lite" as a detective show.  Patrick Jane often seems just "too clever" and "too good" to be believed.  The lead actor is thoroughly charming as "the Mentalist", but I'm not wholly satisfied with the show's facile piecing together of Mr. Jane's too-easily-solved solutions to crimes.  And it's going to get very old each week having his co-workers question his judgement/challenge his expertise/etc., even though he's accurate week after week.  Shades of the DA in "Medium" questioning Allison's ability to see things.  As light entertainment, it's very watchable, but I wouldn't miss it if something better came on at the same time.

DR Ron Pulliam - The only Facebook Apps and Requests that I summarily Block are the ones that center around "Am I Hot?/Are You Hot?/Does S/He Like You?/Do You Like Her/Him?", as well as the ones that require one to "Invite" more Friends to participate in the Application before you can see the "result".   Facebook actually did crack down on those latter type of Apps a couple of months ago, since the developers were intentionally trying to be "viral", but there are still a couple of them out there.

Otherwise, if I think I'm going to have fun, enjoy a Quiz, Test, Game, etc., then I'll give it a try.

However, one thing that was stressed early on in Facebook's existence - which goes back a number of years, waaaay before the "new Facebook" was even a factor, is that Facebook is a means of keeping in touch with friends and acquaintances, both old and new.  It is a social networking tool.  It is supposed to be fun.  It is not an obligation.

DR Jennifer - Bravo used Twitter.com to provide real-time commentary from Spike (and Andrew).

If you have an account with Twitter, you can find the comment feed - the "tweets" - at http://twitter.com/bravotopchef/

Here's a sample from last night's tweets:

-i'm going to get her Cooking for Dummies.
-passion passion, here we go with the passion.
-thank you JG. thank you!
-I am the MOST passionate
-who wins points for passion. please.

etc., etc., etc.

You're restricted to a length of 140 characters per "tweet", so that's why the entries are so short.  It's "micro-blogging".

*And if you don't have a Twitter account, you can just register one, and not actively Tweet, and just "Follow" the feeds.

Preaching to the choir, Jose.  Preaching to the choir.  I joined Facebook to connect with folks with similar interests in film and film music who don't post anywhere else.  That was its primary attraction, although I've enjoyed learning about other folks' interests.

I've enjoyed a number of the legitimate (i.e., non-fee-involved) challenges that pop up...primarily at the invitation of others.  And I've enjoyed exchanging plants and creatures with folks.  Bottom line, though, is that one cannot save any portion of a rain forest unless one sends out plants or creatures.  If this is resented, then private communiques should be issued and cease/desist requests should be made.

Frankly, I've got a string of folks on my friends list who requested to be friends who've said diddly to me and have generally resisted various forms of communication.

To that I say, "What the hell!"???

Actually, Patrick's police co-horts on THE MENTALIST are questioning him less and less and depending on him more and more which I was very delighted to see in this week's episode. At this point, he does seem al most too good to be true, but I suspect as the show evolves, we'll see more warts.

Actually, Patrick's police co-horts on THE MENTALIST are questioning him less and less and depending on him more and more which I was very delighted to see in this week's episode. At this point, he does seem al most too good to be true, but I suspect as the show evolves, we'll see more warts.

At the start of the show, though, he postulated a theory that a co-worker pooh-poohed...and the 35-cent bet was on.  It was a cute start to the show.  We'll see what develops.

While true, later on in the show, they asked what book to look in and he told them. Correctly.

I was totally clueless about what the Annette tin would be all about.  I thought it would be a series of vignettes from several years of "The Mickey Mouse Club", plus songs, etc.

Turns out it's a 20-episode series about Annette moving in with an aunt and uncle!  You could've knocked me over with a feather.

I have no memory of that series.

Annette would say "Don't Jump To Conclusions".

I remember the series very well indeed.  But then I am nearly as old as DR Elmore!  Of course that old fisherman guy from Titicaca of wherever in the Pacific North West no doubt would have a comment or two - if his minders let him on line.

So far I haven't had any of that sort to block, not that I noticed anyway.  Then you can block certain kinds of applications & keep others?  Yes or no is fine as I won't be exploring this right now :)

re: the mentalist

I also thought THE MENTALIST had its best-yet episode. As I mentioned the other day, no wonder it got the highest rating in its history. I think people are really digging the show and are enchanted with the title character. NCIS also reached an all-time high on Tuesday night.

I did not watch this week's episode yet. But i can see where you are both coming from.

I've really enjoyed the show thus far. But a lot of it is due to the extreme appeal of the lead.

I don't necessarily think the cases have been that fantastic. And to me it sort of makes sense why his peers might question him (vs Alison on Medium). It's never really explained how he solves the things he does on Mentalist.

It's not like he's really a psychic. On Medium we know what she can do. Here he is good. But he's admitted he's not a psychic. So he's mostly just guessing and observing. And he surely could be wrong at any time.

I doubt many people resent the use of the Facebook extras. They may not get it or not be interested, but I wouldn't use the word resentful.

I know a number of people who sign up to just to find out what Facebook is all about, or because they are looking for someone.  They aren't interested in the rest of it.  I'm completely surprised I have been having so much fun with it.

Very good premiere of TOP CHEF!

Yes, it was.  -And, as I mentioned last night, it was also fun following the live "tweets" from Andrew and Spike from season 4.  Actually, I think it was just Spike since Andrew was still working.  However, Spike did give out Andrew's phone number so that people could call him.  ;)

Can you specify what you're talking about here and which post from last night??

I've never heard of twitter. Thanks for the info. Although i think the short nature of the posts would drive me crazy.

The Biggest Loser

SPOILERS

The current season of "The Biggest Loser" was less interesting, to me, in its first several weeks than has been true of previous seasons, because the producers did another "couples" show...either husband/wife or parent/child couples.  Bob Harper had the husband/wife couples and Jillian took the father/son, father/daughter, mother/daughter couples.

Things, however, have taken a turn toward the nasty in recent weeks, and -- natcherly! -- I've found myself anticipating each show.  First and foremost, there is one contestant playing now whom I detest beyond all measure.  Her name is....Heba!  The way the competition has run this season is that at first teams played against teams and the team that "lost" the weigh-in would vote out one of its couples.  After a a couple of weeks during which a two parent/child teams had been evicted, they changed things up.  They then forced the couple with the lowest weight-loss to send one of the couple home.  This meant that a father and daughter had to decide which would go home (the father went), and then a husband and wife had to decide which would go home (the husband went).  This latter couple -- Ed and Heba (!) -- had been great friends with another couple -- Brady and Vicky.  Heba, Brady and Vicky decided to "run" the game.  One of the challenges open to everyone was an opportunity to change the game -- to wit, they put out massive amounts of donuts and brownies and cookies and Reese's peanut butter cups -- and whoever consumed the most calories would be able to change the game.  This would come with the winner being able to reorganize the two teams to suit her needs.

Well, the fact was that most of them didn't wish to face the consequences of eating the most calories when they were trying to lose weight.  Heba, controlling person that she is,  stood up and volunteered to take the fall, saying she would be fair.  She wondered if anyone minded.  No one said anything.  The lights were turned off and Heba began eating.  Then, she stopped and listened because she heard someone else eating.  It was Phil of the couple Phil and Amy.  As he later said, he didn't agree to anything.  He was waiting for the lights to go out.  And a third player -- Amy of the mother/daughter team Amy and Shellay -- also joined in and ate something.   As it turned out, Phil stopped eating too soon and Heba beat him.  And Heba was a vengeful goddess.  To punish them, she split up Amy and her mother and then split up Phil and his wife.   To her trainer's utter horror, she sent Phil to the "black" team (Jillian's team), giving that team a huge advantage in posting large weight-loss numbers.  In subsequent episodes, Heba did her utmost to vilify Phil and to create situations that she instigated.  She lied and lied about him being mean to her, etc., etc.  The first person evicted when Heba's team lost a weigh-in was Phil's wife.  She justified her actions by saying that her partner was gone and Amy was no better than she was.  One week later, a dejected Phil (he had lost more weight than any of his teammates but not enough to keep his team safe) was voted out.

Last night, all ejected players returned for another weigh-in and a challenge that would see "one" of them return to the game.  Vicky, Brady's wife, spoke out against Phil as being someone she could not stand to see get back in the game. I LOATHE Vicky.  She's nearly as bad as Heba.  Anyway,  Phil's wife was hurt by this comment and Phil was, too.  He confronted Vicky and told her he didn't care what she thought of him but that she shouldn't have hurt his wife.  Brady came storming over and saying he'd like to knock Phil's block off...blah, blah, blah.  And Phil hasn't done anything to any of them except to suggest one time that they should rid themselves of Heba's manipulation of them.

Unfortunately, Heba's husband Ed won the challenge and was back in the game in a "blue" shirt with Bob as his trainer.  Although last night marked the end of team competition -- meaning they would all play as individuals -- the fact was that five of them were from the "blue" team and three were from the "black team" and, traditionally, such folks vote the party line when it comes to evicting someone when a member of their former team is against the member of another former team.   Last night, though, things began steaming up when the three ladies of the "black" team all recorded respectable weight losses.  Ed, who was immune, and whose weight loss would not help anyone, had lost several pounds beyond what he weighed when he rejoined the game just days before.  As the "blue" ladies weighed in, one of the "black" team's players kept dropping down, down, down until it was plain she would be in the bottom two.  The final weigh-in was Brady, Vicky's husband.  He is a big man and is capable of losing in double digits every week.  Last week he lost 13 pounds.  Last night, he needed to lose 8 pounds to stay above the line.  He lost 6.

Even then, he and his "blue" team thought he was safe.  There were two "black" votes against him and four "blue" votes for him.

Or were there?  Amy, the only unattached member of Brady's "blue" team, had been warned by her mother to look out for her best interests.  Amy knew that if it had been her against Brady, she would lose.  If it had been her against any of the other three on the "blue" team, she would lose.  So, Amy voted Brady OUT.

It was tied, 3-3.  The automatic tie-breaker in "indivdiual play" is that the person with the lowest amount of weight loss (based on body fat loss) leaves.  Brady was that person!

This was a wonderful conclusion to an UGLY episode.  But...the UGLINESS will continue next week because Vicky is going to go ballistic on Amy for her treachery.  I await this episode with bated breath!

End SPOILER

That looks like a fun recording.

It's one of the greatest, and funniest, spoken word recordings done while Caedmon Records flourished. I'm not the reviewer who wrote this but it's pretty accurate:

The music is by Hershey Kay, orchestrator of Gottschalk and many other things, and the actors are just superlative. Cyril Ritchard is the quintessence of wit; Celeste Holme I last heard as Dona Ana in Shaw's DON JUAN IN HELL. You know Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster--imagine him ominously reciting "There was a crooked man," without ever showing you that he has his tongue in his cheek. Now imagine him singing "A Frog He Would A-wooing Go," or pleading with Mrs. Bond's recalcitrant ducks to come out of the pond and be killed for dinner. The familiar and unfamiliar are both included, and because of the talent and intelligence of the participants, the result is simply delicious. I wish the publisher would re-issue it as a CD, but I'm grateful they haven't let it go out of print.

And TIME Magazine in the Dec 19, 1960, issue said of it:

Mother Goose (Cyril Ritchard, Celeste Holm, Boris Karloff; Caedmon). Arch without being cute, this trio skips through the old rhymes like verbal jump ropes. In gleeful self-amazement, Actor Ritchard triple-tongues Peter Piper's pickled peppers ("I didn't break down, you see"). Hershy Kay's musical punctuation is pert and pertinent, unfailingly delights, never intrudes.

Well, Stan fell at the nursing home again tonight.  Apparently it happened five minutes after I left his side.  I hadn't even gotten my key in the door when Mark called to tell me that 911 was on its way to take him to the hospital.  I stayed in the ER with him for over an hour until the doctor came in to see him.  The doctor then ordered a whole bunch of tests.

Since I am still suffering from the stomach flu (and all it entails) I asked the doctor if they were going to be keeping Stan overnight.  He said it was too early to tell, and he asked if I had plans. I said, "No, the flu."  The doctor said they could call me later when they knew what they were going to do.

Apparently, I am now the bad guy for leaving.  Stan wasn't speaking to me when I left.

Yes, but you know you can't take care of anyone else until you take care of yourself first.  Right?   Sending you hugs!

Not sure if MattH has already reported this, but in other breaking Criterion news, the street dates for the new Criterion Blu-rays have all been postponed.

I just got word late today.

I finished the four remaining episodes of THE ODD COUPLE including the series finale with Felix and Gloria remarrying. Much as I LOVE the show, the final season overall was not the show's peak season. I'd say 3 or 4 overall had a higher number of great episodes.

And I got about 2/3 of the way through CSI: NY, but I had to switch it off after UGLY BETTY had been playing for about 10 minutes. The CSI episode was also quite unusual with one of its patented grisly openings.

I enjoyed UGLY BETTY tonight even with the romantic entanglements going into such predictable areas.

Finished with viewing for tonight - watched two movies and a Jacques Demy short film - actually his segment of the omnibus film Seven Capital Sins.  His segment is entitled Lust.

I got the latest Philippe Rombi soundtrack today - I'm sure it's perfection in the film it's from, but it's not as wonderful a listen as all his other scores.  It's very nice music, though, and I may burn a copy without some of the extraneous song tracks that mar the flow of the CD.  It does sound to me like this film may have been temp tracked with some American film score cues - if so, then France is going to HELL just like the US, film score wise.

GREY'S ANATOMY. Whaaaaaa????????

You said it!  VERY unusual episode with unappealing guest victims (!) and a visiting doctor -- Mary McDonnell doing an idiot-savant schtick that was completely ludicrous.  If I was a patient and someone like her started talking about surgery she would be performing on me, I'd call a lawyer and start a malpractice suit.  Huh-uh! No WAY!

New character among interns.  Ewwwwww.  Blindsided and dumb.

The Izzy-Denny development.   Ewwwwwww.  Wrong turn! Wrong turn!

What'd they do...dump ALL their writers???????
