Title: AFTER THE BALL
Post by: bk on May 23, 2005, 09:21:12 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've had a ball reading the notes, and now that it is after the ball, it is time for you to post until the cows come home.  They're still at the ball, however - cows never know when the ball is over.

I also enjoy watching bowling.

As for other sports...

Usually just around the time of the Olympics, otherwise, there's no sports I watch or attend regularly.

Diving - Platform and Springboard - I just have to wonder exactly how those men and women practice those dives?!?!?  Just how many belly-flops and close calls do they go through before getting it right?

Ice Skating - The Singles are good, but I always prefer the couples.  Just seem to be more going on in their routines lately.  The women just seem to do a lot of "coasting" lately.  Yes, I know there are a lot of Michelle Kwan fans on here, but sometimes grace and beauty just isn't enough.  I wanna see jumps and spins!

Gymnastics - Again, I just wonder how many bumps and bruises those athletes go through before they "stick the landing".

Well, I, too, am a bit tired right now.  I think I slept too much last night/this morning, so... And I'm also trying to keep my sinus stuff in check by getting enough sleep and rest.  So...

Goodnight.

I like the slow, watchable pace of baseball.  I usually get out to Dodger Stadium a couple of times during the season to root against them.  I'm a Reds fans and they have already disappointed me long before the All-Star Break.  So I won't open the Sports page again until Spring Training.

The Kentucky Derby is about the only other sporting event I pay attention to.  Though, when in England, I'm fascinated by televised darts and snooker.  Cricket I also find interesting but I don't understand it at all.

Ya know, I knew this, but got impatient.  A bit grainy, sure, but still sugary goodness. :D  (And just means I'll have to try again sometime to let it cool properly...)

I sometimes make a penuche frosting (brown sugar, butter, milk, vanilla, powdered sugar).  Simply faboo on a spice cake.  Just can't seem to recall the amounts at the moment, and the recipe is in a box in my mother's basement at the moment.

As for Sports...I'm not really a sports fan, except that my niece loves the Seattle Storm (http://www.wnba.com/storm/) women's basketball team.  I've taken her to several games over the last couple of years (and I'm taking her again this Friday), and ya know?  It's pretty fun.  I never thought that I'd enjoy it, but being there (a Peter Sellers reference :D) makes a big difference.  You can really get into it and be swept up in the emotion of the local team beating the visitors. ;D

Now there are two chickens. Me and BK.

Sports are low on my list of things to do or watch. Guess it's the small kid being verbally abused in gym class thing. Some "sports" I absolutely loathe and don't understand the attraction at all, such as boxing. Why would I want to watch two people beat each other up until they are bloody, swollen messes??? Boxing is barbaric, in my humble opinion, and, also, in my humble opinion, indefensible as a "sport". Rant over.

I also find bullfighting indefensible as a "sport".

Anyway, it's too early for all this negativity.

If I had to watch some sporting event I guess it would be gymnastics.

I must get back to work. Later!

My two favorite sports, both to attend live and watch on TV are college football (especially my Michigan Wolverines) and figure skating.

I attended every Michigan home game in the five years I spent in Ann Arbor and even went to the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1972 (which we lost to Stanford).  It's especially challenging to be a true-Blue Michigan fan whilst living in Ohio (Buckeye country) the past 32 years.  I take a lot of abuse from my coworkers.

My most special figure skating moment was when the 1987(?) World Championships were held in Cincinnati.  The Russian team was housed at Miami University in Oxford and after finishing my teaching day I went to the ice arena and watched an ice dance practice session.

Don't get to many events of either sport in person these days, but try to watch as much as I can on TV.  When our DS Rob was little he had a friend over to play on a fall Saturday afternoon.  They came through the family room where I was watching a Michigan game and the friend said, "You're the only girl I know who likes football!"

I'm just the opposite.  I hate trying to watch Hockey on TV because I can never follow the puck.  It's great to watch the playoff games on Fox because they use that glow effect around the puck.  Finding someone with a widescreen TV also helps.

I have the same problem with watching Basketball on TV, too.

I seem to be in the majority of Hainsies as far as sports go.  Gymnastics, diving, ice skating-- things that combine grace, style and incredible physical skill.

I do like baseball too.  I can actually understand the game and figure out what's going on.  And unlike basketball and football, baseball  also has a lot of cute players (which, of course, never hurts).

Good luck with the recording!

Good morning, all!  I'm still treading cautiously.  I may  head down to Rodgers & Hammerstein to finish off the vestiges of SHOWBOAT I abandoned a week ago, and I'd like to stop by the recording session for several reasons:
  1.  I'd live to see Vinnie, whom I've not seen in around 6 years
  2.  Half of the recording cast are WHERE'S CHARLEY? alumni, and it would be fun to see them all
  3.  I haven't got to spend much time with my dear friend BK, although he'll be more involved with recording than socializing

I'm still treading cautiously; the surgery was a week ago today, but it seems a lifetime ago, and I'm treading cautiously this week after my bravura performance of last week.

Today's topic:
Baseball and basketball, I love to watch live; I don't give a damn for them on television, and I will never never understand the popularity of that horrific reason to sit out in the cold and watch events happen too far away to comprehend that they call football.
  Swimming
Gymnastics for men; I find the gymnastics rules for women with all that moronic posing and prancing around a total waste of time, neither good choreography nor good sense
Ice skating, couples or single, for its amazing precision and grace

Well, I came from a family of sports fanatics. My dad had both baseball and football scholarships in college and was the club champion golfer for 14 years, my mother played basketball and ran track in college and coached women's basketball in high school when she became a teacher (though she taught algebra). My brother played basketball in high school and was a champion golfer (beat my father for one of his championships) and had a golf scholarship to college.

So, you can imagine how weird it was for this alien (read me) to drop in their midst who loathed sports and was totally into the arts. My dad MADE me participate in my town's swimming team (and I loved swimming so that helped), but I could never summon up much interest to participate in sports.

However, I was dragged to every Clemson football and basketball game there was, went to a lot of the tournaments once my dad retired from work and started playing golf on the senior circuit, and was taken to a more than average number of college and pro basketball, football, and baseball games.

That said, if I'm just watching sports, I'd rather it be figure skating, tennis, or gymnastics.

I've also discussed here before the enormous respect I have for men who box for a living. There is no more brutal way to earn a living, and though I can't watch much of it for long periods because of its brutality, the skill and physical acumen that these men must possess to do what they do is rather staggering.

DR Elmore, please be careful in venturing out. I know in my case when I've been cooped up for a long period of time, I literally itch to get out and about. I'm sure I don't have to lecture you about moderation. You seem to already be aware of limits you need to set for yourself.

DR elmore - I also use iTunes on an eMac.  I'm not an expert, but have one suggestion.  Have you updated the software?  Click on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and scroll down to Software Update.  Maybe there's a new version of iTunes that you need to install on your computer.  After an update is complete, you usually need to restart.

Take care of yourself and don't over-do it!

DR Elmore, are these CDs DualDiscs?  Last week I bought the new Dave Matthews Band CD which was in this new format--a CD on one side and a DVD on the other.  My DVD player/recorder drive in my desktop machine at work refused to recognize the CD side.  I had to rip it on my laptop and copy the files to my desktop so that I could finally import into iTunes and my iPod.    Very frustrating.

There are a few couples who excite the imagination...primarily a Chinese pair and a Russian pair, both of whom swap off winning world titles.

In Ice Dancing, there was a French couple who were dazzling.

But the rest of them look the same to me...same moves over and over and over and over..uninspired and insipid.

As for Michelle Kwan -- she's the Sondheim of female figure skaters.  Don't look for the flash and trash from her.  She's quality every step of the way.

I've been reading the past week's threads and found some comments about TV show discussions.

Even after all time zones have had airings of a show, it seems some Dear Readers are a bit "taken aback" (?) when others discuss the shows because they haven't "yet" watched them.

My question:  How long should we cite "spoilers" after an air date?

Also, DR Jennifer commented yesterday that she found the "Desperate Housewives" finale a bit boring because others had predicted how things would turn out.  I didn't read it as a complaint, but simply as a statement that the finale wasn't as exciting as it "might" have been had good guesses not been made.

That said, there was a May 18th post from DR Jennifer asking everyone who they thought the person would be who gets killed.  So...it might be prudent to avoid asking questions you don't want good answers to.

I think folks here have a very good idea of what topics are going to be hot and which are not.

So, I'm just wondering....

Absolutely.  The texture should be smooth and creamy.

And this was a candy that was made long before refrigeration.

As for blaming us for your getting fat, just think of how disgusting those anorexics look on almost every grocery tabloid these days.  We'd be a happier world if more people would be happy with their weight, rather than being determined to be happy with less.

First bit of good news:

I've been asked by the conductor to play all of next week's shows of Mamma Mia! here in D.C.  The Music Supervisor, David Holcenberg, will be coming in to town, and the conductor wants his "regulars" in the pit.

So much for "walking".  ;)

But, as I've said before, I'd rather play than not.  And, heck, having to go to the theatre keeps me off-line for a couple of hours each day.  ;)

I noticed my father was still up and was checking some things out on his computer.  I asked him when he was supposed to go in this week for his check-up.  He said he actually went in last week for the tests, and he already got the call from his doctor giving him the all clear!

Great news indeed!

:D

His next check-up will be in August which will be the year "anniversary" of his diagnosis.  And with this recent "good news", there's no reason to think that anything will change come August.

VIBES do work!

I hope you have a lovely day.

Question:  When you tread cautiously what size stick must you carry?

DR elmore - As DR Ginny suggested, I'd check for a software update.  In fact, there have been two BIG updates for iTunes over the past couple of weeks.  My iBook is set for AutoUpdates, and when I launched iTunes the other day, I was surprised to see some minor changes to the "front door" , the look of the program.

If I hadn't been watching sports, I wouldn't have met der Brucer.

I got started as a scorekeeper for some of the Los Angeles Gay Softball League's teams because my partner at the time, Jason, had joined a team and they needed someone to keep the stats.  League rules.  It was, of course, the worst team in the league that first year, and they didn't continue through for another season.  Neither did Jason and I.   :-\

But I was hooked, and moved from team to team the following three years.  Then I got bashed by a gang of queerbashers (this was before the term "hate crime" came into fashion), moved to Pasadena, moved again to Orange County...

I happened to run into a former teammate from that first team one evening when I'd gone up to LA, and he invited me to keep score for a team he was going to coach down in Long Beach.  I took him up on the offer, and was with that team for two years before it folded.  The following season, I hooked up with the team sponsored by Mike's Corral, a somewhat famous bar in north Long Beach, and der B's favorite hangout.  We met the night before the first game of the season, had a ravishing time together, and since it was raining the next day got to spend the entire time talking instead of my keeping score.

Der Brucer followed me to the games for the next six seasons, sometimes grumbling sometimes not.  After Mike's Corral was sold (legal problems), I switched teams again, but the whole scorekeeping business was getting tiring, with too many egos too easily bruised.  After that sixth season, we decided to drop the weekly Sundays spent at the ballfield.  Der B retired, got us involved with politics, and I've had little reason to look back.

I discovered some good news, too, when I arrived at work today at noon.  My vacation days for October 4 & 5 have been put on our departmental calendar, so I'm going to proceed with my plans to fly to NYC on the 3rd, play with Jane, Danise, vixmom, and any other DR's who care to join in, and then fly on to Atlanta on the 6th for my conference  ;D.

Our problems with Peggy climbing over the fence have increased.

Once last night, and twice this morning, Peggy has gotten out of the yard.  That's bad enough, but how she got out is the real problem.  It seems that Fletcher has figured out how to open the doggy door even when we've slid the closing panel shut.  He pushes the panel up with his nose, and since it's a fairly snug fit the panel stays up while he lets himself out.  Therefor, Peggy follows...and over the fence she goes!

Fortunately, she doesn't want to run off too far, but with her pit bull bloodlines there are too many people who won't see her as the friendly dog that she is, and she could get into real trouble.

Der Brucer thinks he's rigged the door so that Fletcher won't be able to open it again, but it's a pain.

We've got to get her a better home.

Elmore, I share your contempt for football.  Just clumps of men running up and down the field.  I feel the same way about basketball.  I went to a high school in Northern Kentucky that were regional or state champs year after year and the whole town was somewhat maniacal about football, so there was a lot of pressure to play.  I did my freshmen year.  When I didn't go out my sophmore year, the football coach pulled me out of French class had a "long chat" about it with me, which was basically a thing where he pressured and intimidated me to go out the next year.  This was back in my Greek god days, so I had a body and could run very fast...in fact, I think I was the fastest man on the team...but I couldn't catch a cold in Siberia, couldn't block and when I was down in that line, and the ball was hiked all those complex plays went out of my head.

The head football coach was gone my senior year and I opted for dramatics.  I also did some minor track.  I was a dash man and once or twice.  But I hated competitive athletics.

I went to the University of Kentucky during the Adolph Rupp days and still have the distinction of never once attending a basketball game.

Elmore, my mother went to Miami University.

It was seventy-six years ago today, in 1929, that The Cocoanuts premiered.  The Marx Brothers, and little else, were never the same after that.

And today marks the 122nd anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge.  (That's for those of you who have no interest in Cocoanuts.)

OH!

And I meant to post/ask about this earlier...

Did anyone catch catch the Theater's Best and Worst list in this past Sunday's New York Times?  -Well, they called it "The Incredibles"  and "...The Regrettables".  Copies of it were being passed around backstage at the show on Sunday.  The first entry caused some almost LOL moments.

From Ben Brantley's "Regrettables" list:

Quote
EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF 'GOOD VIBRATIONS' The show that may well be remembered (and hailed) for hastening the death of the jukebox musical, a virtuous act of euthanasia if ever there was one. The ultimate bottom-scraping example of a low form of scavenger theater, this stitched-together beach blanket of a show purged every ray of sunshine from the happy songs of the Beach Boys, as a young and firm-bodied cast modeled swimwear and drowned before our eyes.
[/size]

:)

And the rest of the special Tony Awards section had some other great articles.

I think that if we know that somebody here hasn't watched a show then we should put spoilers.  For example when TAR was on we knew DR MBarnum would tape it.  And for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES DR MattH said he hadn't watched it yet.

If nobody says they haven't watched it, then i would just put spoilers the next day (just to be sure).

Quote
Also, DR Jennifer commented yesterday that she found the "Desperate Housewives" finale a bit boring because others had predicted how things would turn out.  I didn't read it as a complaint, but simply as a statement that the finale wasn't as exciting as it "might" have been had good guesses not been made.

That said, there was a May 18th post from DR Jennifer asking everyone who they thought the person would be who gets killed.  So...it might be prudent to avoid asking questions you don't want good answers to.

You're right, it wasn't a complaint.  I found it interesting that many had guessed the surprises.

But I was referring to the Mike/Deirdre/Mary Alice/ Paul plotline, not the "who gets killed" one.  Since it was me who guessed Rex. :)  Anyhow for that one we all just guessed a bunch of people (paul by mike, rex from heart attack, lawnboy ...).  So that surely didn't spoil anything.  I just thought they picked the most boring death (since we knew Rex had had a heart attack it wasn't really a surprise).

Well, SHOWBOAT is put to bed, and I've been to the recording studio, where I've seen Dear Friend BK, DRs Rodzinski and Iris, my WHERE'S CHARLEY? friends, Jonathan, the great Tony Walton, the peculiar Barry Day, and Vinnie!  I wanted to stay longer, but I forgot to take the Vicodin this morning and the pain was wearing me down.  So I'm now home.

Elmore, my mother went to Miami University.

She should be in my alumni directory!

I loved to play basketball and baseball, even though I stank at both games.  My major complaint about public school athletics is that the superbutch coaches only care about their superbutch jocks; it's us nerds and spazzes who needed the attention and nurturing rather than the scorn and derision that seems to be the norm among a group of athletic assholes.

Just got back from a crosstown jaunt to the studio. It was a gigantic place.  Shot a little footage for BK to use on the new site. Maybe two minutes of good stuff on there. Iris was there, keeping the people and paperwork in line. Elmore was there and let me share his cab part of the way back. BK was there, MAB (Mostly All-Business) as one might imagine. Everything seems to be going well, near as I can tell!

And I just got back from a stroll to Barnes & Noble, where I picked up two interesting tomes.  The first is The Worst Album Covers Ever, which looks to be a real hoot.  Also, a week or so ago we were discussing Caleb Carr and I've been wishing that he would publish another book.  And so he has.  This time, he has written a new Sherlock Holmes novel--The Italian Secretary.  I'm usually suspicious when an author borrows characters like this, but I'm gleefully anticipating what kind of spin Carr puts on Holmes and Co.

I am a full-fledged football fanatic.  A far more complex game than many give it credit for.  I will watch absolutely any NFL game, regardless of who may be playing (and never miss a Seattle Seahawks game, painful as they may be).  I follow college football, but usually only watch games involving Northwest teams.  For basketball, I'm most always aware of how teams are faring, but don't pay a whole lot of attention beyond Seattle, and don't watch much at all until the playoffs.  College basketball starts at tournament time for me.  Baseball is much the same as basketball for me, being aware of the general standings, only really paying attention to Seattle, watching more teams once the playoffs start.  I'll watch darn near anything during the Olympics, summer or winter.  Very few sports that I really don't enjoy at all, but they include boxing and hockey.

'24' had a sensational season ending show, and it set Jack Bauer up for next season

SPOILER

The show is pretty much going to turn into an amalgamation of THE FUGITIVE and THE BOURNE IDENTITY. As he tries to change his identity and live somewhere else, it's obvious he's going to be discovered and have to go on the run next season.

But they'll have to do some fancy writing to come up with a season finer than this one.

MEDIUM was very unsatisfying. I don't really understand the rationale of splitting the season ending show into two parts and only showing the first part. Very frustrating.

Just got back from a meeting with a pit stop at Amoeba.  Picked up DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK, THE BRAVADOS, & ON GUARD, all for well under ten dollars, one for under five.  Also picked up the original cast album of GOLDEN BOY.  I love the song entitled NIGHT SONG, though I think I like the cover version he did of it on another album better.

While at Amoeba I saw more people delusional about their looks...weird piercings, ungodly hair-dos of ridiculous hues (a long, greased-up Mohawk half black.half yellow...and I mean YELLOW, not blonde), ghastly tatoos up and down limbs, across necks, on the midriffs and the small of backs.  Do other people find all this attractive?  Of course, usually the people who have these "notice me" adornments are not particularly attractive to begin with...but why not learn to make the most of what you have, instead of turning the unexciting into the unappetizing?

DR CP....what a coincidence....MUCH of the outdoor footage for MOHAWK, the Allison Hayes movie of the Photo of the Week, came from the much more prestigious DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK.  DRUMS has a couple of Indian attacks that really scared me when I saw it on TV as a kid.  And they are still frightening.

As for the season finale of MEDIUM (i guess don't read this if you intend to watch it).

I actually didn't mind the ending.  No, it wasn't a huge cliff-hanger.  But it was still interesting.  Because I don't really understand why the Texas guy did what he did.

DR MattH do you have any ideas?  I was thinking maybe he wants to pass to the other side to give Alison more info.  Or maybe he's punishing himself for not discovering the relation?

Anyhow, i thought it was an interesting way to end.

I thought it quite clear that he was intentionally trying to cross over so that he could help Allison put an end to something he was already blaming himself for not ending years before.

Before I sign off for the night, I thought I'd let you know two things:
1.  I've heard from DRTomovoz who is now home and happy to be   there; it sounds like he'll be with us again soon.

2.  I got a lovely email from DRJay, who is now employed. He and his dashing boyfriend are celebrating six months this weekend at Palm Springs. and he sounds happy and busy  He says he will return as soon as he manages to balance his time.  It hope it is soon.  I miss him.

I love sports.  My favorite is baseball, followed closely by football.  I prefer watching football on television, especially after the Seahawks decided they wanted an open-air stadium.  I watch the Seattle Mariners every chance I get (in fact, even as we speak).  I try to go to a couple of Mariners games at Safeco Field each year; but with my hip getting steadily worse, I have had to cut back on those to avoid all the extra walking.

Tomovoz got me turned on to Australian football, but I was a little disappointed to find out that, unlike their calendar, they actually wear clothes when they are playing the game.

Hi Gang,

DR Ginny, I am so glad that you will be making the trip to NYC.  I wish I could say with 100% certainly that I will be there but I’m not quite there yet.  I will know before the tickets for Michael Ball’s tickets go on sale in August.

It would be wonderful if DR Michael could come up again.  Maybe some others?

I guess I found the right group of people with regards to TV sports because my likes match most of yours.  Ice Skating (did you know I’m something of an ice skater myself?), horse racing, and gymnastics make my list as well.

DR Rodzinski, to answer part of your question about Finding Namo, he is a poster on a Broadway board that I used to post on before I discovered HHW.  There was a time when he and I butted heads quite badly but after we started talking privately, I found out he’s a pretty nice guy.

I do miss talking with him and some of the others from that board but I never really fit in.  It’s just as well that I’ve moved on.

I went to the gathering they had the last time I was in NYC, mostly because I dearly wanted to say “Thank You” in person to someone who had done something very nice for me.  Once I did that, my heart was content and I left.  I rarely even scan that board now.

So BK, dish the dish—what did this “Finding Namo” look like?  I never met him –that I know of.  If he was at that gathering, he didn’t introduce himself to me.

Oh, and I have to say if there is one stupid sport (IMHO) to watch on TV, it's golf.  YAWN!!!!  How boring to watch people hit a ball as far away from themselfs as they can and then have to walk after it.

Of course, if I could make the money those people do putting that little white ball in the cup I think I would have a whole new respect for the game.   :D

TCB, the one and only football game I have watched from start to finish was when the Bucs played and won the Super Bowl.  I have no idea what was going on but I am one hundred and ten percent sure that it was my watching that allowed them to win.

I’ve never watched another game and they sure aren’t winning anything anymore.   ;D

It seemed like that was the same situation last year with the Seattle Storm women's basketball team!  They won EVERY game that I either saw (live or on TV) or listened to on the radio or Internet!  It was spooky! :o They did lose (and win) games that I didn't experience but they never seemed to lose if I was in some sort of attendance.  However, all good streaks come to an end.  They eventually did lose games that I went to, but like I said, it was pretty spooky for quite a while! :)

 :'(

I just hope that the new homes solution is a tree and a chain.  That always makes me sick when I’m walking B & B and I see that.  If you can’t have a fenced in yard for the dog(s)  to run and play in, you shouldn’t have one.  IMHO.

Der B is trying to figure out how to make our fence taller, or something, to make it harder for Peggy to climb out.  If only she weren't so danged clever in figuring out how to do things, and more clever in figuring out how good she's got it now.

Well, I have just checked with others and it seems neither contestant did particuarly well in the finals of IDOL tonight. I won't get around to watching and listening to it until tomorrow.

But on the basis of busy signals, Bo's lines seem busier.

The problem with tonight's "competition" was two original songs that did neither singer any favors, featuring notes below their ranges and notes above their comfort zones.

Add to that Simon who wanted to designate each song as a "round" and assign "round 1 goes to...."  Neither Randy nor Paula agreed much with Simon on anything related to the performances.

For me, despite two poor songs (the "usual" for AI finals...crappy songs they force the finalists to sing), the evening was Bo's.  Carrie had a lot of high notes and did a lot of tonsil yodelling to hit them.  Unfortnately for me, her high notes become nasal and flat.  It bothers the hell out of me, but not the thousands of fans in the Kodak Theater and, apparently, not the judges.

Simon's final word to Carrie was that she had done enough to win....not, as the chat rooms would have you believe, that she "should" win or "deserved" to win...simply that she had done "enough" to win on her own, public willing.

Bo was nervous...and Carrie was, too.  It was, IMO, the Kodak Theater...WAY LARGER and filled to capacity.  It blew them away.

The "chorus" was there again...adding nothing special to the proceedings...also, as usual.

I like Bo to win.  But won't be surprised if it's Carrie.  It doesn't matter.  I won't buy any Carrie CDs, but I'll follow Bo's career with interest.
