Kritzerland site is still behaving oddly in some browsers.  At least for me.  Hope that doesn't discourage people from ordering, if the problem is more widespread.

TOD:

Picking just a few favorite Sondheim songs?  A Sophie's Choice moment!    :P

Depending on where I've been and what mood I was in, I think most all of SJS's songs have been personal favorites at one time or another.

I know that my introduction to Sondheim's work was discovering and wearing out my parent's LP of Company when I was about 12, and I've never looked back!  First stage show live was the original NY cast of Sweeney Todd.

I am thrilled for this opportunity for bk and Kritzerland.

TOD

My Sondheim Firsts:

Returning from a Naval Academy European cruise in the summer of 1958, I met my future Mrs in NYC and we saw West Side Story - and my first Sondheim album

When I was in Graduate School in Monterey CA in 1966, I saw a neat TV show called Evening Primrose - too bad it has still not been released as a CD

First Sondheim Words and Music on stage - Follies in LA

Quote
Lemon-myrtle, lavender-Earl Grey, hazelnut-orange -- the selection of tea cakes from Valerie Confections screams spring.

Assistant Food editor Betty Hallock is a fan: "They're moist, dense and not too sweet -- and not overly precious either," she says. "The hazelnut-orange tea cakes are rich with nutty flavor and bright with candied orange peel. And that citrusy-crackly-zingy glaze is, well, the icing on the cake."

Good morning all!  I'm sorry I'm not on the bus, DR Ginny.   I have a little extra time this morning because we're having a clerical meeting today.  I have to drive about 2 miles to go to it and since it's by my bus stop, my boss will allow me to drop my car off there and I'll ride the bus home.

The big news is that Bear got fed up with not being able to get on the bed and he somehow managed to climb up last night!  It wasn't to hard to get him down either.  I took a little step stool I had and he jumped down on top of it.

I did order some steps and I hope that he'll be able to use them when they come but we'll have to see how that goes.

Congrats to Bruce and Kritzerland!

I gave up on watching NEW AMSTERDAM.  The few that I watched seemed like a cheep copy of HIGHLANDER.   I guess there really can only be one!

Gotta scoot!  Laters!

TOD:...I know that my introduction to Sondheim's work was discovering and wearing out my parent's LP of Company when I was about 12, and I've never looked back!...

What a nice way to make me feel OLD.  My introduction to Sondheim was also Company - back when I was starting college, you little whippersnapdaw!

What was a little different, for me, was that it wasn't the OCR that I first heard, but an album recorded by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops.  There were four Broadway medleys on that LP, Company and three other shows.  I never bothered to listen to, and cannot remember, the other three shows after hearing the music for Company the first time.

I've long attributed this introduction, to the music sans lyrics, to my attitude that Sondheim is a composer first, and a lyricist later.

Company was also the first show I saw on stage, at Fresno State College.  Robert was played by Robert Westenberg, who later looked princely in Into the Woods, not to mention soldierly in Sunday In the Park With George.

First Sondheim show seen cold (without having heard a cast album first) - Into the Woods, at the Old Globe in San Diego, before it got to Broadway.  Der Brucer and I went down one December day and waited in line to get returned tickets.  Our timing was perfect - not only did we get the tickets (although we didn't sit together), but "No More" and "No One Is Alone" had been added to the show just days earlier.

Oh, in the San Diego production of ITW, the Witch was a lesbian in black leather.  And the Baker's Wife didn't get stomped on by the Giantess, but took an unwitting bite out of Snow White's apple.  And Rapunzel's tower didn't rise up, the way it would on Broadway.

Other than that, there were very few changes from what we saw in San Diego and what we saw at when the Broadway production went on tour.

Afterthought: Should I have put a SPOILER ALERT at the top of this post?   ::)

Yesterday, Justin (one of our cartwranglers, just out of high school) told me that he didn't like the movie version of Sweeney Todd.  He didn't like Johnny Depp's whispered vocals.

"It should have been really sung.  Like opera."

This from a kid who hasn't yet figured out that Alvin and the Chipmunks (http://www.thechipmunks.com/) are animated characters.

Good morning, all! I've got to leave shortly for Toyland to copy all the orchestra scores in the Appendix to the new LOS edition.  After that, drop off the completed work to Music Theatre International, return here and start the Ellington fixes for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus.

Last night I finally finished by bus/subway book FOREVER, which was both moving and exhilirating. Like Jack Finney's great New York fantasy TIME AND AGAIN, it's a great adventure, history, and New York romance.  The tv series NEW AMSTERDAM can steal its premise, but I doubt it's got the time or interest to deal with the 1741 Slave Revolt or Boss Tweed in any detail; I suppose as well that if they used these sequences, the show's really running close to plagiarism.  I think the next book for the travel bag is JOHN ADAMS, but I'd like to reread TIME AND AGAIN now.

TOD:
First cast album: West Side Story 1963
First libretto:  A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum 1965
First acting: Forum 1968, Gypsy 1970
First performance: Company, National tour 1972
First Broadway: A Little Night Music, 1973
  Favorite songs:
       Anyone Can Whistle
       What Can You Lose?

TOD:  Hmmmmmmmmm

First was probably the soundtrack to GYPSY followed by the WEST SIDE STORY soundtrack, and a couple of WSS jazz and dance music albums which were great to listen to.  The kind by knock off orchestras that used to sell for less than a dollar at the grocery store.

First cast album I bought was COMPANY - me too.  Loved it, still do.

First live show probably WSS at some school, although I saw a touring production a few years ago.

Been in WSS, GYPSY, INTO THE WOODS.

But if I were told I had to choose HAD TO......I could still NOT decide between SWEENEY TODD and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE....

Coincidentally, I just came across my copy of the book of "Stephen Sondheim's Crossword Puzzles from New York Magazine".  I've actually never completed of attempted one... West Side Story (the film version) was my first exposure to Sondheim. I saw it in the mid-60s.

There are too many to try and cull down to a favorite. Someone in a Tree, A Weekend in the Country, Losing My Mind, A Little Priest, Being Alive, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Rose's Turn and many more.

As for the Topic of the Day...

First Sondheim Song:  "Send in the Clowns" - It just had to be since it's one of my mother's favorites.  Of course, when I first heard it, I seriously doubt I knew who Stephen Sondheim was.

First Sondheim Show: Sweeney Todd at Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia, MD.  An amazing production, and her (Toby's) solution for disposing the bodies "in the round" still entertains(?) me.

First Sondheim Cast Album: Sweeney Todd

First Sondheim Show on Broadway: Into the Woods

First Sondheim Show I worked on: Company - What an amazing summer that was!  The show was being produced by Arlington (VA) County as their annual "big musical" at the Lubber Run Amphitheatre - outside, and open to the public.  Full cast, full ochestra!  (including two keyboardists and two(!) percussionists), and a sort of full set.  The director was from Australia, Brisbane I believe.  Our Joanne was brilliant.  They fired our original Amy just a few days before opening due to creative differences - and I still remember walking into rehearsal that night, and going over the "Getting Married Today" scene with the new Amy - watching the "old" Paul trying to hold back his anger and tears over what had happened...  Then on opening night, Amy1 was in the audience wearing a t-shirt with "The Original Amy" on it... Then coming to the theatre/park the next day and seeing "Parental Advisory" signs posted - apparently, they had a lot of phone calls!  And our closing performance got rained out, but we had a great party!  -Oh, and I actually got paid, so, technically, it was my first professional theatrical gig too!

First Major Professional Production of a Sondheim show that I worked on: Sunday in the Park with George at Arena Stage in DC.  It starred bk's own pals, Sal Viviano and Liz Larsen.

As for my favorite Sondheim song, hmm...

"Finishing the Hat", "Lesson #8" and/or "Move On" from Sunday.

Although, I have a very soft spot in my heart for some of his early works: "What More Do I Need?", "I Remember", and "So Many People" - which still manages to make me tear up if I play it for someone during an audition.

First Sondheim:  it is family legend that when I could barely walk, and had never before shown an interest in the piano, I heard "Small World" on the radio (was that Vic Damone?), toddled over to the piano and plunked out the first few notes with nary a pause.  It was that that convinced my Mom perhaps there was something unusual going on in my chubby little head and that's one reason I started piano lessons so early.

First Sondheim song: Not sure what the first song by him was that I heard recorded by a singer (non-OBC, non-OST).

Tuesday morning greetings!  My workday started with a meeting at Panera and I'm just getting to my desk.

TOD - first awareness of a Sondheim lyric was when my parents came home from seeing Gypsy on tour in Detroit - my mom was quite taken with "If you wanna bump it, bump it with a trumpet."

First cast albums - West Side Story and Gypsy OCRs on LP, which were family-owned.  First show seen - movie version of Gypsy.  First recording I bought was probably Company OCR on LP, after seeing road company in Ann Arbor with Tandy Cronin as Amy.  First Sondheim show seen in New York - A Little Night Music, summer 1974 when I was in the city for American Library Association annual conference.

Favorite songs -
"Getting Married Today"
"Broadway Baby"
"Everybody Says Don't"
"Not While I'm Around"
"Children Will Listen"

I left one tod out; Ist sondheim song I heard was "Small World" sung by Johnny Mathis on the radio. But my nine-year old ears misheard;I thought he was singing the title song from FANNY(I'd seen the cover at the Library)as in "Fanny, you're a stranger who's come here...Fannny, I'm a stranger myself here"; "Small World lost the Grammy for song of the year to Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans" If only the Messrs Styne and Sondheim had learned to write like that, they could have been successful in Cho Business(Actually I like Horton's song, esp when the soldiers fill an alligator with cannonballs after they' run low on weapons"We filled it full of cannonballs and powdered its behind/And when we set the powder off the gator lost his..mind.(Return to chorus).Once I get my copy of PRIMROSE(I have to wait till Fri payday to order)all I'll need to make my Sondheim collection complete is the very hard-to-find MANTOVANI PLAYS SONDHEIM.

According to my web designer, there is some bug that occasionally happens with Firefox/Mozilla and it's not just to our website but to any flash website.  And at this point, there's no real way around it.  But I've only gotten one e-mail about it, so I think we're probably fine.

Wonder of wonder, miracle of miracles!  My mother's email has been glitchy since before Christmas.  Around the end of January, I got it to where she could receive, but not send.  Just now, here at work, I've gotten several messages from her - she called her provider all by herself and after they asked her to repeat her birthdate (she was born in 1918!), she said they were ver-r-r-ry patient with her.

Geez, DR MBarnum, for as much as you enjoy song and dance in Bollywood movies, don't you think something like GYPSY or WEST SIDE STORY would be appealing to you (or even pique yout curiosity)? We do talk about these shows a lot around here, and the film versions are readily available for rental.

Somehow WEST SIDE STORY was one musical I never saw as a kid, and one day I am sure I will get to it. I don't know from GYPSY.

My very important project has hit a roadblock (surprise, surprise). It appears that duplicate data has been added to the database! No one thought of that possibility before beginning the project. My work is now on hold until they figure out what to do so I'm back to regular work.

If MS Access software is available, you can import any .dbf file and run Queries that will check for, and identify, duplicate records.

ACRES MAY CLOSE LAST CHAPTER

LONG BEACH - For locals like Stan Poe and S&e Reed, Acres of Books has been more than a bookstore to them.

The storefront on 240 Long Beach Blvd. has been a longtime source for researchers, writers and book enthusiasts who have combed its acres of dusty shelves for hours hoping to score rare specialized tomes and hard-to-find first editions.

Writer Ray Bradbury once said Acres "is the best walk-through multimedia experience, if not on Earth, if not in all America, at least in the western part of the United States."

"For book lovers, a lot of (coming to Acres) was the experience," Reed said. "You could get a book anywhere, but it's the smell of the bookstore, the smell of the old books, the store cat, the way you can get lost in it and escape the everyday. It's so much more than getting a book. It's the book-buying, book-browsing experience and Acres is one of the last places to do so."

The earliest Sondheim that I remember experiencing was when I was a kid.  My sister and I would watch "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" whenever it was on TV.  We loved that movie, but I had no idea who Sondheim was.  It wasn't until I was in middle or high school when I discovered musicals and then Sondheim, and then realized that he wrote the songs for the movie that I loved as a kid!

The first Sondheim cast album I listened to (and subsequently bought) was Sweeney Todd (I now have them all!)

I have been in two (community theater) Sondheim shows:  I played Hero in Forum and I was George (Uncle Jocko's assistant) and a placard changer in Gypsy.  Next season, Capital Playhouse is going to do A Little Night Music.  I would love to be in that. :)

I don't remember what the first Sondheim show that I saw was. :-\ Otherwise, I've seen live community theater productions of West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Night Music, Company, Into the Woods, Passion, Assassins and Sunday in the Park with George

I've seen professional productions of Company, Follies, Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George.

On Broadway, I have seen Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park With George.

In London, I have seen Follies and Pacific Overtures.

I think I saw a community-theater production of Gypsy.

I would love to see A Little Night Music (I don't know the score at all) and Passion. I was always curious about Getting Away With Murder, his nonmusical play, but I guess there's little chance I'll ever be able to catch that now.

I'm a Sondhead but I thought Getting Away with Murder was pretty bad. I do think most of the blame is Mr. Furth's, but there is enough blame to go around. It wasn't terribly funny (it was billed as a comedy thriller) and it was, as I remember, excruciatingly boring.

It was directed by Jack O'Brien of Hairspray (and other big Broadway hits) fame. It was done in California at the Old Globe Theatre (under a different title) in 1995. It moved to Broadway (after revisions) in 1996. Here is the cast list for Broadway:

Cast

Martin Chisholm - John Rubenstein
Dossie Lustig - Christine Ebersole
Young Man - William Ragsdale
Charmaine - Michelle Hurd
Pamela Prideaux - Kandis Chappell
Vassili Laimorgos - Josh Mostel
Gregory Reed - Terrence Mann
Dan Gerard - Frankie R. Faison
Nam-Jun Vuong - Jodi Long
Roberto - Al Espinosa
Dr. Conrad Bering - Herb Foster

Terrence Mann and John Rubenstein were the "big" names in the show but even they couldn't save it. The production got mixed to bad reviews and lasted for only a few performances.  and moved to Broadway. It ran from February 20, 1996 (previews begain) for 29 performances and opened on March 17, 1996 at the Broadhurst Theater. The run after opening was 17 performances and it closed on March 31, 1996.

Then I watched 3 3/4 episodes of A SHOT AT LOVE. In the last one, she's whittled her choices down to two guys and two girls, and she's gone home to meet their families. She feels COMPELLED to tell them she's bisexual.

Totally manufactured drama for the TV cameras. I mean, if she's with that particular person, why is the fact that she swings both ways a concern? Is she saying she wants that person but may stray with others of another sex?

I have to say, though, that several people in the house I think highly of and feel THEY could do a lot better than Tila.

I don't think I'd ever have a question about this.  The score is unforgettable.

Eh, I saw Follies and I remember absolutely nothing about it. So bang goes that theory. (I've heard the OCR as well. Sorry, but I've never been able to understand all the accolades. I do acknowledge that I am in the minority on this; I'm also apparently the only person who didn't love "Little Miss Sunshine.")

One CD that I have, and shamefully haven't listened to yet, is "Bounce." How do people like that score?

Wonder of wonder, miracle of miracles!  My mother's email has been glitchy since before Christmas.  Around the end of January, I got it to where she could receive, but not send.  Just now, here at work, I've gotten several messages from her - she called her provider all by herself and after they asked her to repeat her birthdate (she was born in 1918!), she said they were ver-r-r-ry patient with her.

Of course, you were 23 at the time.

Chrysanthemum Tea
Move On
Opening Doors
Our Time
So Many People
Someone in a Tree
What More Do I Need?

We have had somewhat of a problem with pedestrians getting hit.  Not long ago a student at the university was hit and died.  The driver never saw her & she wasn't watching-just talking away on her cell phone.  I've seen plenty of students talk & turn their heads to watch for traffic.  For the most part, no matter what they are doing, the students think because they are in the crosswalk they are safe.

The police department set up a sting.  Many drivers got tickets, but not nearly as many students did.  Orange flags have been placed by the crosswalks for the students to use, of course they rarely do.

For the most part, no matter what they are doing, the students think because they are in the crosswalk they are safe.

We have solved that problem down here in Southern Delaware - no highway cross walks! (And no pedestrian walk lights.) If you are one one side of the six lane highway (the only road through the area) and wish to be on the other, you best call a cab. The bicyclists are also miffed that they have to share the bike lanes with buses and right hand-turning traffic. We import thousands of Europen students each summer and offer them bicycles as transportation - and then use them as target practice.

LOL-That would make it impossible for the students to cross the street from the dorms to their classes.  The other morning I was watching a student cross, and I swear she was sleep walking.  As for crossing, it is only a four way street, & many areas have little islands dividing the road so there are only two lanes to cross at a time.

Sadly, the school isn't the only area this is a problem, people have been hit in the downtown area.

Well I wasn't much more than 12 (13 maybe) when "Company" came out.  I used to delight in reading the A&L section of the New York Times Sunday edition when it came to my junior high school library, and I to this day remember the first full page ad for "Company."  I predicted right then it would be a hit if only for its super-cool logo and ambivalent one-word title (Company?  As in guests?  Or a theater troupe?).

I, on the other hand, believe everyone forgot everything before they hit door to leave.   I base that on past clerical meetings.

No more iced coffee for me!  I hate coffee.  I have always hated coffee.  However, for whatever strange reason, I've found that I LOVE McD's iced coffee.

When I picked the donuts up at Dunkin Donuts this morning, I saw that they have iced coffee as well so I got some.  YUCK!  It was sooo bitter.  I think it must have had tons of caffine in it as well because my heart started pounding and felt like I was having some kind of rush.

Never again.  Because I'm prone to kidney stones (like the one I have as we speak) I'm not supost to have dark liquids anyway.  I know, I was being bad but since I have the stone and have to have surgery anyway, I figured, what the heck?

I'm told it's like a ticking time bomb.  It may never move and then again, it might.

If it hits, I'll have to go to the hospital and they will put me on pain meds but will do nothing to remove the stone.  I'll have to still have the "surgery" as a emergency but I'll be in pain (with pain meds) until that can be arranged.

On another note, I got a nice email at work today.  I spotted some problems with an email that CS sent out and wrote the guy who sent it.  He said I was "sharp, as always" for catching them and my boss said that email is going into my record.  :)

Before our class reunion I payed my fee to classmates.  I then sent a bulk email to the class members & received many responses, without their paying anything.

Thanks, DR Danise.  I just talked to Mom on the phone and she told me about her customer service rep and laughed about how often he asked her to repeat her birthdate.  Her 90th birthday will be on Thanksgiving Day.

I guess I've said that Mom's birthday was November 10th.  However, I have since found a 2nd  birth certificate for her, one very old that states that is the date and yet another that was dated in the 30's that made it a couple days earlier (same year).

Since we always belived it to be the 10th, I don't count that 2nd certificate.

I have received scores of those over the years and refuse to pay to retrieve them.  If someone is that interested in contacting me, there's a little thing known as Google they can use.  My website is free.  :)

Well, this is a site that I actually joined previously, so it was okay.

I have a wonderful boss.  I don't honestly know what I'm going to do when she retires in 2 years.  That's one day I will cry because I will miss her.

I can't remember when I didn't know West Side Story and the same is true of Gypsy. I auditioned for Gypsy when I was in 5th grade. I didn't get it, but I still loved the show

Those bastard producers didn't tell you it was pre-cast with Merman?

Speaking of daffodils, this coming Saturday is our area's Puyallup Valley Daffodil Grand Floral Parade.  At one time, the Daffodil Parade was the third largest floral parade in the whole country.

In last Sunday's newspaper, The News Tribune, there was a big front page article on "The Decline of the Daffodil Festival."  Ironically, the biggest single reason for the decline of the Festival is The News Tribune.

In the 1980s, our local newspaper family sold the News Tribune to The McClatchy Company out of Sacramento, California.  They immediatelly let it be known that they had no interest in being a Tacoma newspaper.  Instead, they wanted to become a Puget Sound, or at the very least a South Sound newspaper.  In an effort to accomplish that, one of the first things they did was to delete almost 95% of the coverage usually given over to the Festival.  As the years went by, the entire Festival became smaller and less important to our area, because no one knew when the Festival was happening.

And now The News Tribune has the nerve to question the decline of the Festival!

LOL< Actually it was a production at the local community college, but no one told me that the daughter of the English teacher and the daughter of another teacher had the edge for the parts. They got them

That may be the way Classmates does it, but there are several other companies (i.e. Reunion.com) that won't let you see who wrote to you or what they said, unless you cough up the dough.

I was so happy to finally finish A SHOT AT LOVE. There actually ended up being only 10 episodes plus a reunion special episode. The winner was no surprise at all.

The disc also offered about 8 scenes of extended footage (mostly the fights between some of the contestants) and 6 what they called "deleted" scenes but which really were just scenes in the finished show with some too revealing footage cut out. There was one deleted scene where two girls (who ended up hating each other) took a shower togteher early on in the game.

I just channel surfed waiting for 8 p.m. shows to begin. I watched a little bit of GALAXY QUEST (which I have on DVD and really love), some BLACK WIDOW (the Debra Winger version from 1987), and some LAW & ORDER on TNT-HD. McCoy won the case!

Next, I watched tonight's new episode of NCIS. Nice to see the friendly camaraderie back in full flower. Looks like they may be introducing a new love interest for Michael Weatherly. I thought they were going to let him and Ziva get together this season. I guess not.

IDOL:

I didn't think there were any true standouts. I liked a few people, but I didn't think Carly Smithson did herself any favors with her song, and I really disliked Jason Castro's "Over the Rainbow."

Not one judge commented that he got the lyrics wrong TWICE! They all raved about his performance. Go figure!

Bottom three: Brooke, Carly, Syesha with Carly possibly going home.
