"Eli Stone" was rather good tonight.  I'm glad the "obstacle" was gotten rid of, finally.  It  might have become too much had it remained in play.

Good morning, all! It looks like my Thanksgiving visit to Ohio is dead, so I'm hoping the invitation to the home of our DR FJL and Mr Skip Kennon is still valid. At this point, I don't believe the property closing will be happening within the next week and, by the time the check arrives, which may not be until December now, my goals of shipping more cartons to Ohio, buying the plane ticket, and renting a car - which I'd planned to accomplish during October - are pretty much shot to hell. So, I'm rethinking my life for the next couple of months, and maybe I'll plan a visit to Ohio for sometime in 2009.

Today, I have laundry, a trip to the NYPL, and the final work on the STUDENT PRINCE medley. I've still had no word from the singer on its completion, but he's singing a Wagner opera in Germany at the moment. It would be nice to know that I can send it off to the copyist and take i off my work pile.

Yesterday, on a whim, I picked up the 3-D version of THE POLAR EXPRESS.  I tried to watch it on my home PC (wearing the 3-D glasses that are included) and it looked terrible!  While the 3-D effect was easily discernible, the color was washed out and there was a strange double image throughout that I don't recall seeing in other 3-D films.  And the red/blue glasses were giving me a headache.

Now I can't wait to look at the 3-D JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH which I also purchased.

Since i didn't get to see the NBC promo for LIFE on wednesdays (at the end of last week's show) i had assumed the switch was to start this week. But apparently it only starts nov 5. So tonight is a new LIPSTICK JUNGLE. And Friday at 10pm is a another new LIPSTICK JUNGLE.

I am still curious what Global (Canadian station that carries LIFE) will do. It is still marked for this friday. But maybe they will show a repeat?

Tonight: PUSHING DAISIES, PRIVATE PRACTICE, DIRTY SEXY MONEY (abc).

re: reactions from flu shots.

I think it is quite common to get a sore arm afterwards. Sometimes it can be quite stiff that first night.

Btw, i had no idea that the shots might not be good for the full season. That seems very odd. Especially here where winter lasts from now until april.

Well......if I had had the Laurette/Prince Jack CD earlier this year, I would have probably underscored a couple of scenes in ALL MY SONS with a couple of the tracks.

der BRUCER says his soundtrack CD's (with one exception) are from films he has seen.  And that's the way I feel generally - however there was a time when a cover or a movie I wanted to see but hadn't showed up in the record bins....I bought it, and it made the film, when I finally saw it even more enjoyable.

I also love the TRUE GRIT film score LP....and I may have that CD.

I had some of that same ghosting/double exposure problem with the 3-D presentation of HANNAH MONTANA/MILEY CYRUS. Not all the time, mind you, but enough to prove that 3-D on TV has still not been perfected using the red-blue/red-green technique.

About IRON MAN. I found I enjoyed the opening hour much more the second time around. I knew nothing about the origins of Iron Man's suit, and the opening capture sequence and fashioning the first jerry-rigged version was not that interesting the first time. After I saw the REAL suit later, it was more fun seeing the first suit again take shape.

My biggest disappointment with the movie was the final confrontation with the villain which seemed a rather tired mini-version of TRANSFORMERS. And the David-Goliath aspect of the fight couldn't have been more predictable.

That said, I found Downey's quirky-smart-self deprecating hero refreshing and Gwyneth was a thousand times more enjoyable here than when she was directly involved in the heroics in SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (where I found her so annoying I wanted to put my foot through the TV screen.)

We started that in 3D (and Blu-ray) last night--same deal with the color, very pale and unsaturated, but the 3D effects were spectacular, especially that little buggy thing at the beginning.  :)

I was sorry to read about the demise of "The Ex-List" on CBS.  Lead actress Rachel Boston was virtually incandescent as Bella Bloom, and the story's premise and execution were delightfully quirky and entertaining.

It's all the more irritating that networks demand either an "instant time-slot winner" or they axe good shows that could use a little time to build an audience. CBS' current policies are particularly egregious.  Two years ago, they had a hit with "Jericho" and then pulled it off the air for several months.  There was a writer's strike, yes, but they didn't pull it because of that.  They pulled it to introduce "another" show they wanted to build an audience for.  When "Jericho" returned, the audience had deserted CBS in that time slot for another show.

"The Ex-List" had the misfortune of inheriting the time slot CBS covets on Friday nights -- 9-10 p.m.  The network couldn't capture a win at that time with last year's wonderful "Moonlight" and axed it despite a very vocal, appreciative fan base.   Two really good shows cancelled because the network could not give either one of them sufficient time to find the audience "size" it wanted immediately.

"Instant gratification" in TV ratings is something that comes from mindless, dumbing-down entertainment.  I'm certain CBS is formulating some new reality "hell" for Friday nights now.

I have to admit that all DVDs are not equal when it comes to color.

But, I also have to admit that HDTVs do not auto-adjust themselves to display DVD color palettes to their best advantage.

I recently saw this "Picture perfect: HDTV tune-up tips" (http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/tips/0,3800004921,61988192,00.htm) article that might prove useful to some here.

Well, then, that's particularly good news for several folks here.   I expect you and Jose to be stars.  I'd have mentioned Miss Karen, but I suspect her heart isn't in network television.

If I had to guess, I think CBS will bring back this summer's FLASHPOINT in the new year (they had already ordered 13 more episodes) and either put it on Fridays at 9 or put it on Thursday at 10 and try THE ELEVENTH HOUR at 9 on Friday.

I still think the cancellation of MOONLIGHT was a major misstep in the programming department. That show had SUCH potential to grow from the interesting, involving premise they started with.

In yesterday's UPS shipment, some fab items I couldn't resist:

Soundtrack to "Elizabeth: The Golden Age".  I saw this film on HBO this past Saturday.  I had been "warned off" purchasing it on HDTV as being something that might prove disappointing.  I have to say, though, I was entertained, but not mesmerized, by it.  The music, though -- now THERE is something wonderful.  Cate Blanchett is glorious, the production is lavish, the photography is spectacular, and then there's that fantastic music.  Everything was so right...except for the lack of depth in the screenplay.

Because my first memories of records were 78 rpms of Les Paul and Mary Ford, I purchased "Les Paul with Mary Ford: The Best of the Capitol Masters 90th Birthday Edition."

And, joy of joys, "The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection" -- all 80 Hal Roach shorts, remastered, restored and uncut.

DR elmore - As I believe DR Jane mentioned a few days ago, it's probably better that you're not heading home to Ohio this Thanksgiving due to the slew of flight cancellations that occurred a few weeks ago.  -And most of those cancellations affected the smaller markets/airports.  I have a few friends who are currently scrambling to find another way home for the holiday, and they're already finding that even Amtrak and the busses are practically sold out.

Yes, I know it would be nice to head home for Thanksgiving, but since it looks like the holiday travel season will be stressful for everyone involved, it's probably better that you stay in NYC, unstressed and among friends.  God knows, you don't need any more stress.

*I'm not even sure what my holiday plans are right now either.

As is par for my building's management, the laundry room was once again screwed up; today it was a dead waashing machine, so a week's worth of laundry, which would normally cost me around $5.00 cost me $8.50 down the street. It also meant that my trek to the NYPL was postponed, so I believe I will walk down there now. The Fat Conductor of Limited Talent and Limitless Ego usually shows up later in the day and I like to get there and back before I think the ass will show up to grace the Special Collections with his presence.

I'm also pondering an extra four bars in the intro to the STUDENT PRINCE medley, so I'll work that out while I walk.

I got her a little dog-shaped cupcake at Wal*Mart last night, so while mum and the cronies are playing cards, we'll have a little celebration.

Well, so far it's been another lazy afternoon here.  Sort of.  My Dad is out right now at his second doctor's appointment of the day, and my Mom's nurse should be back here in another half hour or so to do what she needs to do.

Wednesday afternoon greetings from the lower level of the Nashotah House library!  The 2008 Academic Convocation was held this morning at 10am, CDT.  DH Richard and 10 others were the first to receive the distance-learning Master of Arts in Ministry.  It was a beautiful ceremony and we've just come from the festive luncheon in the Refectory.

DS Rob is across the way using our laptop and the school's wireless to finish up a philosophy midterm that has to be emailed to his prof in Cincinnati by 5pm.  This evening we're going to a local microbrewery for dinner.

Next, I finished the episode of STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO with Ida Lupino and Don Stroud that I had started yesterday. Also, playing her son, was Charles Martin Smith.

In this set, I've seen actors on the verge of break-out success: Tyne Daly, Larry Wilcox; in the episodes I've seen today were a very young Nick Nolte and Lola Falana.

I have tried to watch 3D movies on my TV, not the recent once and the red/green glasses do not work. I have a Panasonic Projection Widescreen (not boasting) and it has texture screen instead of a smooth surface as most tvs have.

However a friend of mine has a polarize (sp?) set similar to the system in the theaters and this seems to work better but not a 100%.

I wonder if having a plasma or LCD makes a difference???

Anyone???

I just got off the phone with a very nice young lady from Geico.  Since I've never rented a car before and I've never driven in snow, I wanted to know if my car insurance covered me when I go to Pittsburgh on the 9th.

I told her that I knew they were dumb questions but I really didn't know the answer.  She said that I was smart because I am covered but most rental places try to sell you insurance you don't need.

It made me feel good.

The car rental tells you it is easier to take their insurance since it is immediate, instead of paying them upfront & then waiting to get your money back from your ins. company.  They really do pressure you to buy it when renting the car.

I've been researching if it is ok to get the flu shot tomorrow if I have a cold.  I think it is.  I'm taking a Benadryl tonight to be on the safe side.  I don't know what I have, just that I have had it since August when I had the very bad cold.

I could have waited and got it at work 2 weeks later but I was trying to save the $15.00 charge for just the shot.  I pay a $15.00 co pay for my primary care.

I was sorry to read about the demise of "The Ex-List" on CBS.  Lead actress Rachel Boston was virtually incandescent as Bella Bloom, and the story's premise and execution were delightfully quirky and entertaining.

It's all the more irritating that networks demand either an "instant time-slot winner" or they axe

I recently caught up on the episodes of Ex-list. I thought it was just alright.

The premise was cute. And some of it was good. And i agree that networks are cancelling shows so quickly. But i can't say i'm overly disappointed. Or that i liked this show anywhere near as much as most of my favorites.

I think it depends. If you are just slightly under the weather and have had this since august then it is probably okay.

But DR Danise is right. You have to be careful. Actually i don't even think they would give it to you if you were sick. You can always tell them your concerns and they will tell you if it's okay.

Fever is bad. you cannot get the flu shot if you have a fever. There is a whole list. I am going a week from monday.

I am glad i read the amazon. com reviews first. A lot of people said the first 100 pages (it is 600+ pages) are not that great. And theye were right. But after that it got a lot better!

I had better read fast because my library lets us request books they don't have. And if they get them (they almost always do) they give them to you first. Well there were 4 books waiting for me. And 3 books waiting for my niece (2 eloise books and bernadette peters broadway barks).

A nurse will probably give you the shot. And before they give it, they will probably have you fill out a form with questions. If they don't I think you probably should tell them you haven't felt well and see what they recommend.

I have never had a reaction to a flu shot, except a sore arm for a day or two. The flu, however, is horrible.

Der B's claim that we don't have CDs of soundtracks in our collection of films that we haven't seen is not completely correct.

I bought the CD for the Branaugh Henry V before we got the film on laserdisc.  And I don't remember us watching the film all the way through.

Use your common sense, Jane.  You know you and your body, so pay to attention to what it's telling you.  You may have a sinus infection compounded by allergies (or neither).   I haven't had a flu shot in years.  I think perhaps I only had one once (and it just so happened I got the flu that year, but I think a different type); I've never fit any of the categories.  My mother fit a few of the categories, and as her health and lungs worsened would have been severely affected by the flu.  She was scared of a reaction but finally got one a few years ago at our urging.  She did just fine that year, and for the first time in a decade or so did not get a flu/cold/pneumonia type of thing that would pretty much wipe her out for a couple of months every year.

Thanks DR Kerry, I'm trying to listen to my body but as usual it is failing me.  And I know I'll end up like Bruce if I get the flu.  If only getting the shot guaranteed you wouldn't get the flu.

I will research if a sinus infection will interfere with the shot even though I don't think that is what I have.

Good Evening!

Dinner with Steve was just the "break" I needed after the past 48 hours.  Steve has started experimenting with what he calls "baked soups".  He put various vegetables, some broth, maybe some wine and some cubed/chopped meat into a rectangular baking dish, then pops that into his counter-top convection oven.  Tonight's "soup" consisted of chicken (boneless thighs), lima beans, corn, tomatoes, carrots, onions, Merlot and various spices.  It was sort of like a fancy Brunswick stew.  He made it last night, but let it sit overnight in the fridge to "meld" for a while.  It was quite tasty.  And the cheddar and asiago biscuits were the perfect accompaniment.

*The best part of the evening was being able to "vent" without really venting, if that makes sense.  The change in scene - and change in company - was nice.

...Then after I left Steve's place, I then headed over to Wal-Mart... Then Target... Then Ukrop's... Then back to Target.  My mom's main nurse suggested that she start "taking" Glucerna and/or the No Sugar Added (NSA) Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks.  Wal-Mart didn't have any of the NSA mixes.  Target didn't either.  Ukrop's did have the NSA in Chocolate, but since my Mom wanted the Vanilla or Strawberry, I headed back over to Target to buy a six-pack each of the Vanilla and Strawberry Glucerna shakes.

bk - I think you had a sinus and/or bronchial infection which you did not "treat" in the proper way until it had started to run its course.  Still, regardless of what you had, a period of rest and eating sensibly would have helped to "cure" you faster.

DR Jose, and if she doesn't like them will she still drink them?

I think she'll like them.  It's more a matter of making sure she eats something every few hours, instead of having "big meals" every five to six hours.  Not only will that help regulate her blood sugar, but since her stomach is still "small" from her hospital stay, that will help avoid getting sick after eating (which, unfortunately, is what happened last night). :-\

I'm home from work and Miss Dixie Bell and I have shared a piece of Doggie Birthday Cupcake while I read to her all the lovely birthday greeting on this most fabulous site.
She enjoyed the cake and the greetings, which were accompanied by many belly scratches.
Wrooof, wererwoooof, groooof. . .wrroooff. (That's Dixie Bell's way of saying "THANK YOU").

Well, if DD Dixie Bell ever comes to NYC, I'd be more than happy to treat her to a "Pooch-Ini" at Shake Shack: Vanilla Custard, Peanut Butter and a Dog Biscuit.

*I always love watching the dogs play with the cups after they finished eating their treat.  Just like with "Frosty Paws".  :)

DR td, I'm guessing you didn't eat real doggie cake, it is Miss Dixie who ate people cake.

It was a birthday cupcake in the shape of a dog.  :)

Cute.

Congrats to DH Richard!!

and

~~~Vibes for a Successful Midterm for DS Rob!!~~~
Thanks, DR George!  We've had a very festive time and the midterm was sent an hour ahead of schedule.
We've been to a local microbrewery for dinner, filled up the car for tomorrow's trip, and stopped for frozen custard.  We're now winding down in our room and getting ready to go home.
I am sooo happy!! Juan the drywaller called tonight with a very reasonable estimate.  He is going to start at 9:00 Saturday morning and will get the entire job done in one day.  Woo and Hoo!!!!
I also ordered the WIND I was thinking about last night.  It only had the rebate for 2 more days and I decided for the price, I just can't beat it.  I plan to find a place to set up the laptop I have now and just leave it open.  That way the case won't be damaged anymore than it is already and I can do all the photos, detailed work (briefs etc) on it.   What fun!!
Tonight I got out the shop vac and cleaned up the room they are going to drywall and my furnace room (the spooky yucky room in the basement.  I still haven't really gone all the way behind the furnace to explore what's back there, but that's ok. I also went to the farm and home store to get a new furnace filter and got a bunch of paint samples.  I'm not sure what color I'm going to do that room in.  I just hadn't really thought about it....  I do have the carpet remnant I'm going to use in there, so I'll pull some colors out of that
I had the flu back when I lived in Arizona.  I literally couldn't get out of bed for 2-3 days except to drag myself to the bathroom.  I remember nearly falling asleep when i drove to the doctor.  I missed and entire week of work and it felt like I lost a week of my life.  I've gotten a flu shot every year since then.  I do not want to go throught that again. BTW, the flu shot does not contain a live virus, the nose spray does.
WOW!
Lots of Election-related news and issues right now here in Virginia.
-Do any other states have "dress codes" for the polling places?  -I'm really quite surprised that they are not allowing anyone to wear a "biased" button, t-shirt, cap, etc., when they go to vote.  However, that law is now being contested.  -I really can't see how wearing a "McCain" or an "Obama" t-shirt would be considered "intimidating" to other voters.  ???
-And now they're saying that the State as a whole may not be ready for Tuesday's election.  Oy...
DR Cillaliz - Just click on the Individual pic, then click on "Resize".  The "large" size should be OK for HHW.  -Just click on "Full Size" to double-check.
*And you don't have to delete the old one, just replace the link. -Although, that may happen automatically once your resize it.
And then there's this....
State police seek source of false campaign flier (http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-10-29-0205.html)
Quote
The Virginia State Police bureau of criminal investigation is looking into the source of a false campaign flier circulating in Hampton Roads, that claims to be from the State Board of Elections.
The false campaign flier, seen in several Hampton Roads localities, advises Republicans to vote on Nov. 4, and Democrats on Nov. 5.
In reality, all registered voters will cast ballots Tuesday, Nov. 4. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
According to the Associated Press, the fake advisory, which seeks to confuse voters, features the logo of the State Board of Elections and states the two voting dates are intended to ease the load on local balloting officials.
I finished the three remaining episodes of STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO. Funny, up until those last three, not one of the shows was a true mystery with a murder and a group of suspects. Of the last three, two were mysteries, and I guessed the murderer both times.
I wonder if they did more full out mysteries in the third season. I guess if I continue reviewing DVDs I'll eventually find out.
All three of these have been released multiple times on DVD, but these feature new high definition masters (downconverted for standard DVDs) and there appear to be many more featurettes and documentaries than on previous sets. As I said, it's a two disc set. The SB I have it only a single disc.
With the new system on HHW, do our mailboxes no longer get full at 25 messages?
And in brighter, "cheaper" news...  There are a couple of places here in Richmond where Regular Gasoline is under $2.00/gallon.  The price at Costco has dropped $0.38(!!!) since I was here a week and a half ago!  -And with some of the special gasoline discount programs that some of the grocery stores participate in, you can get it for as low as $1.65/gallon.
*And just when was the last time that gasoline was under - or just around - $2.00/gallon?
You can go to www.gasbuddy.com, put in your zip code(s), scroll down to "Pump Price Graphs" on the left and there's a link to see a graph for up to the last six years.  Here's a six-year graph for my zip code (98501):
Next, I put in the DVD of GUYS & DOLLS. I'm not sure why I wanted to see it again. I haven't watched it in a long time. I got up to "I'll Know" before I turned it off.
Speaking of Guys & Dolls, I don't know if this has been posted before, but "Gilmore Girls" Star Graham Cast in Guys and Dolls Revival (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/122816.html).
I saw that earlier on Playbill.com - among other places.  Very interesting casting.  Now if they would just cast Cheyenne Jackson as Sky, I would be very happy.  ;)
*And I think he'd be a perfect Sky.  As for Sarah... Hmm... Still thinking about that one.  I know who's up for it, but... ;)
I think we "discovered" that the mailboxes are now "unlimited".
HA!
Just watched "Little Britain USA" on HBO, and afterwards they just showed a promo for "Sweeney Todd" (the Johnn Depp film).  The background music for the promo:  "Beautiful Dreamer".  ;)
I think what I had was the flu.  Everyone I've talked to who's had it felt exactly as I did, had it exactly as long as I did, and still had the residual cough for weeks.
Did either you or "everyone you talked to" actually get tested for Influenza? A nasty, lingering, autumn cold is not necessarily the flu. The flu usually has fever and a dry, unproductive cough; a cold no fever and a hacking, productive cough .
*I always love watching the dogs play with the cups after they finished eating their treat.  Just like with "Frosty Paws".  :)
Just like Fletcher with Yogurt cups - he'll follow me from the refrigerator and stare me down until I'm done and he can have the cup.
I don't think that the ten people I spoke to all had an autumn cold with exactly the same symptoms.  Sorry, do a little research on this flu bug and you'll find exactly what I'm talking about.
You aren't that far from Detroit - maybe Jimmy Hoffa.
And did any of those ten people actually see a doctor to get a true diagnosis of their condition?  -Or did they all over-medicate and wrongly-medicate themselves with that "cocktail" too?
;)
*Yes, my inner bitch is coming out tonight. ;)
Really loved BILLY ELLIOT the musical beyond all sense of reason.  I disagree with the ending, but was still very moved by the whole thing.
SPOILER
I truly think that his inability to control his temper in hitting that other small kid (during the friggin' audition process for Gosh sakes) should have required that he not be admitted.  But that's fiction for you.  A peculiar plot point, though, his hitting that little kid, given the ending of the show.
9-10 PM TV viewing was interesting:
I was taping Criminal Minds, and then channel swapping back and forth between Philly and The Game and NYC and the Bernstein concert.
Yo-Yo Ma and the Phillies!
Nice punkin', Cilla!
That room, though, where the picture was taken -- it could stand a touch of yellow!
