Der Brucer figured out the Medium case tonight.

He's so proud of himself!

Good Evening!

I'm back from a sort of impromptu trip to Queens/Astoria.  My friend, Michael, is thinking of moving out there and wanted to walked around to get a feel for some of the neighborhoods.  So, after exchanging some texts, I met him down at 72nd Street, and then it was on the 1 to Times Square and then the N to Broadway (in Astoria).

We basically just walked a loop from 31st over to Steinway down to 39th and back up to 31st.  Then we walked up to Ditmars, etc., etc.  Quite a lot of walking, but there was lots to see and a lot of places to check out: an Italian bakery, a Balkan bakery, a Salvadoran panaderia (bakery), a Lebanese bakery, a Arab bakery, etc., etc., etc.  ;)

We eventually met up with some other friends and had dinner at Locale.  It was good food, although, we all thought our dishes could have used a bit more "flavor" and seasoning.  -Maybe just another sprinkle of salt in the kitchen?  However, the bartender was adorable!  :D

BrettyS, GROOVY DAY is now my favorite song! Who is the gal singing with you??

That's the adorable Joan Manners! Former Dr. Demento guest star and former girlfriend of Weird Al, and one of the sweetest people on earth!

Thanks for mentioning that, MBarnum! I enjoyed that very much, Bretty!

I was able to watched LITTLE NELLIE KELLY, my annual Irish treat to myself, and enjoyed it very much. Even makes me cry a little bit every time I see it.

I watched CANTERBURY'S LAW. The case was fine, but all the angst over her kidnapped little boy turns this into a completely different show. The scenes with Aidan Quinn are very painful and unpleasant. I don't think the two types of dramas pair very well at all.

NEW AMSTERDAM made me angry again. Foir the second time in four episodes, his pursuit of this married woman (who's having problems in her marriage) prevented him from adequately guarding a woman in real peril.

I'd love it if the payoff for all this romantic pursuit was that she ended up NOT being "the one" he's searching for. I just find all these dates intrusive into the case he's trying to solve and the backstory that's helping him solve it. Juggling too many stories for the audience is one way to lose the audience.

Yep, I figured out the solution to MEDIUM before the revelation as well. I don't often have that happen with this show, but tonight, I did.

The highlight of the impromptu bakery tour of Astoria was ARTOPOLIS.  It has to be one of the most beautiful bakeries I've ever been in - marble floors, columns, beautiful display cases, etc.  The baked goods all looked wonderful and were attractively displayed.  The "open" cookie displays were protected by a sort of white gauze/crinoline fabric - quite a nice way to keep them covered up.  -And the one we tasted were all quite good.

Next door to Artopolis was a Greek butcher which had some great prices on all their offerings - pre-skewered kabobs of pork and beef were only $1.25 a piece!  Next to the butcher was a Greek supermarket.  And all of these were tucked into the ground floor of an industrial/medical building right near the subway.  Who knew?!?!?  ;)

I performed the completely strange play The Falling Sickness there when I was in high school, to an audience of slack-jawed yokels who didn't quite get the part where all three characters attacked each other with bowling pins. ;D

If that's not an Edward Gorey play, it should be!

Tomorrow I'll watch OLD CHRISTINE which I recorded tonight.

I also got a review disc in the mail that I've been expecting for days - MANDA BALA, a documentary. The film is only 85 minutes long, but there are a bunch of bonus features on the disc including a commentary, so it looks like most of the day tomorrow will be given over to this film.

I know they interpolated "The International Rag" into the score of the film

Hmmmm...I've never heard The Internationale done as a rag. That would be quite something!  :)

Had a few telephonic conversations, listening to Harry Nilsson's Aerial Ballet (a GREAT CD), and shall now shave and then shower.

I love it, and all of his other albums. He is my all-time #1 favorite singer, and I have all of his albums, many times over.

The new documentary about him was hard for me to watch---you see him basically self-destruct.

I love cats' mad phases. Growing up, my cat Grouchy used to have a brief period immediate relief, then she would remember that she was mad at me and would sulk.

My cats never seem to have those mad phases. Well, 3 of them don't, anyway. The other is just a bitchy diva.

Our kitten guests have given up trying to get my cheese and crackers and are now grooming each other on the cat condo.

I thought this was hte day they were supposed to go home.

How big is the cat condo, TPunk?

DR Sing, do you know what kind of cancer it is? (Of course, they all suck but some are easier to deal with than others...)

Vibes to your co-worker!!!

I have a double session tomorrow (the night one to fix the TLC tape I made that another editor was called it to revise and ended up butchering it. I was horrified by what I saw when it was posted for viewing, and am glad they asked me to come in to "polish" it and fix the music edits. I hope I can make it better, but it's not cut to the music anymore so I don't know how much leeway I will have to be able to change anything.

Oh well...it will be a challenge, but I sense a night of cringing, so I'd beter get to bed!

I speaking of tasty goodness, I had lunch with Mustafa today. He has been sort of down lately...I think homesickness has set in...and a little depression and guilt about leaving family behind in Iraq... so I called and told him I was going to take him for a hamburger at ROCK N' ROGERS (best burgers in Salem!).

Mustafa had the mushroom burger and I had the avocado burger.
