Title: FLOGGED WITH A LINGUINI
Post by: bk on November 24, 2003, 12:07:42 AM
Well, even though we had 144 posts, which isn't bad for a Sunday, I'm hoping we can make up for such a low number (yes, I'm sorry, you haz spoilt me) by posting until the cows come home. So, get to it, now that you've read the notes, of course.

Well, I had a post for "yesterday's" notes, but since I took so long composing them, by the time I hit "Post", I was not allowed to do so since the topic was locked... Of course, my original post was lost in ether.. ah, well...

So...

Good shows today. Stephen Schwartz was at the matinee. My brother and his wife and some friends of theirs came to the evening show. Big pizza party after the show tonight for the closing night of Proof, and the end of the first week of Camelot. "Adult Beverages" were served, but I abstained since I had a drive back to Richmond ahead of me.

Good drive back. No accidents, just some fog and some deer running across the highway.

Congrats to DR Jason!

Well, I'm tired... And I would have been at the chat if I was able to, but since I wasn't...

See you in the morning.. or the afternoon... ;)

Of course, my "original" post was a bit less succint, but...

I am quite fond of Italian food but my experience has been to let Colin cook it for me or to go to an Italian Restaurant. I now have thoughts of that delightful movie "Breaking Away". I guess some will see the connection.

Here's something that relates to all the posts so far: I was on my way to a screening of Breaking Away when I got my one and only speeding ticket, on the Sepulveda Pass. They clocked me at 71, and I had to go to some sort of school as my punishment.

I love Paul Dooley's line "That cat's name is Jake." Indeed, my father has a more meat-and-potatoes name for the cat we gave him, Friedrich. Some DRs may remember that Friedrich was rescued from his sad haunts near the Carousel Dinner Theatre in Akron, OH during one of DW Joy's spells in The Sound of Music. He was named after a character in the show. But that's too fancy for Dad, who calls him Fred.

"Confuse-a-cat" was a good Monty Python bit, no?

My recipe is very simple. Melt a whole lot of butter in a pan. Drop in bay scallops, the small kind. Add tarragon and stir until cooked. Then dump the whole thing over some fresh angel hair. Voila!

Now, wasn't that easy?

Mmmmm...DR Noel, we're going to the grocery store today, and now we may just have to pick up some scallops. You really prefer BAY scallops to SEA scallops, though?

Simple recipe: Lightly brown some grated mizithra cheese in a pan with some olive oil and minced garlic (don't worry; mizithra cheese is so dry that it will stay crumbly, it won't melt). Spray cooked and drained pasta (spaghetti or angel hair is best) with more olive oil. Add mizithra cheese and lightly toss to mix.

This stuff is addictive!

Morning all! A short week ahead and a vacation week after that--Life is GOOD!

Have a happy and safe day all--Lurkers included because they need to have a happy and safe day too. Since they lurk and don't post, if something happened to them, how would we know?

Sorry for my errantness and truantness this weekend. We was busy, what can I say. I sit here at work thinking, Monday, Tuesday and then 11:30 Wednesday and I'm done. Great for me, but I think it will mean more errantness and truantness for me as well, since I won't be around a computer as much.

Congrats Jason on the job.

Watched Relative Values on Saturday (the Julie Andrews, Jeanne Tripplehorne, Colin Firth movie that was never released in the U.S.). Not bad, certainly not terrible, but not bad. I now have to go back and re-read (or read) the Coward play on which it was based. I don't remember ever reading Relative Values and I'm a big Coward fan. It's a slight little film with a good performance by Dame Julie and some nice background music. If you come across it at your library (that's where we found it on VHS) or somewhere else, it would be a diversion.

My battles with Time-Warner Cable of New York City continue. I hope to have them resolved by tonight when I speak to a "customer service" representative. Customer service is such a relative term.

Oh, well. That's it for now. I hope to be back in a while.

MMMM, Nestle's Quick. Yummm. Although I only like Chocolate. For some reason, I abhor Strawberry Quick. Just the sight of a glass makes my stomach do flip-flops. Milk should only be straight up or chocolate (in my humble opinion)

Where are all the east coast people??? It's 8:48am and not a soul but me. It's also taking an extraordinarily long time for each post to post. Maybe it's my service at work.

I am off to listen to the Broadway Radio Show.

I'm a fan of pasta with any type of pesto based sauce. Linguini with red clam sauce (Johnnie's in NYC has the best red clam sauce I've ever had) isn't bad. I won't turn down a hearty meat sause with Itailain sausage.

Now I feel like watching the Stanley Tucci move w/ Isabella Rossilini. I cant remember the title...help! :o

I may have my terminology wrong: Whichever is the small kind. As this is a pasta meal, your shellfish needs to be bite-sized, even when forked with angel hair.

Lovely chat last night! ;D

Harry Hamlin at the Farmer's Market? That would never happen in Indiana. Although I did see Elvis at the gasoline station last summer, I am sure it was he.

MATTH - I think maybe RR did think the majority of her vocals were used....may even have been told so...and since what is on the soundtrack is different, she may have recorded even more work tracks than the ones that are there. As you say, she may have had Kirk's tracks to mouth to - but she writes that after she saw the finished film - she pleaded that the dubbed tracks be replaced. It's a strange situation. But if RR had a fight with Jack Warner....my money would be on Warner.

Recipes: well I only deal with food on the table, don't cook much. But any type of pasta alfredo with chicken is fine with me!

This recipe seems pretty close to how I would make it:

And for Monday - here is your Allison Hayes Picture of the Week!

Oh, gosh, yes, DR JRand, Jack Warner never lost a battle in his life as far as a movie was concerned. Sometimes he was right, but often he was wrong ("Cool Considerate Men" from 1776).

I have never been a milk person. I was forced to drink it as a kid until I went away to college. The first weekend I came back from college (where I had started drinking iced tea with meals), my mom sat a glass of milk in front of me, and I said, I don't drink milk any more. Broke my mother's heart, but it was a great first step of independence for me. So, I haven't had a dozen glasses of milk in my life since then. But if I HAVE to drink milk, I would prefer that it be chocolate. Chocolate makes everything better, I've found.

I have no pasta recipes to share. I make a very tasty but simple spaghetti sauce to serve over simple spaghetti, but it's nothing fancy. My ex-lover used to do a zuchini lasagna that was wonderful (better than it sounds, I promise), but he made it and I never got the recipe.

Does anyone go out and brave the stores on the Friday after Thanksgiving? I've done it once in my life when Best Buy was offering the collector's edition of APOLLO 13 for some insane price, but you had to get it before noon. I got there about 9 o'clock in the morning, and it took more an hour in the checkout line to get the items I bought paid for.

Never again!

Just finished listening to the Radio Show. Quite enjoyable, although I wasn't able to listen to Miss Luker. For some reason, I got an error for that stream. I was able to listen to everything else (with the looonnnggg pauses between streams, explained by Mr. Bakalor this weekend). What am I thankful for this year? Besides the obvious, I'm thankful for the Broadway Radio Show which brings us new treats every week!

I rarely go out on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, called that because so many stores do well on that day). I am not a fan of shopping amongst crowds. This Friday we will spend the day with friends and then in the evening Anthony has a late booking for a clown show. It's a surprise for a 9-year old's slumber/birthday party. When we go shopping or to the post office to mail off presents to Minnesota it will be on Saturday or Monday. We will avoid those crazed crowds looking for the next Tickle Me Elmo.

Oh DR MATTH - once my sister Molly, her husband Jason, and I went to Midnight Madness at Wal-Mart which occurs at Midnight on Thanksgiving Day...or 12:01 am on the Friday! It is aptly named...and as you said NEVER AGAIN!!!

Hey! Look what will be released on DVD on January 6 2004!

Recipes, that's what we need. It's funny, people want these topics and then those that want them never show up the day I do them. Of course, the question is where is WEL to reprint my recipe for Wacky Noodles? WEL was gone all weekend. WEL may WEL be bitch-slapped from here to eternity. And then there is dear reader Laura, where is dear reader Laura? I'm sure she'll have a recipe or two. And her lovely daughter Gyp...Sandra. Where in tarnation IS everyone?

While we eat pasta, we rarely do anything special to it. Anthony's mother has a great recipe for Pasta et Fagioli (pasta and beans, carbs and protein). I like Carbonara dishes and I like pesto if it's not heavily garlicky. I'm one of the few people in the world (it seems that way anyway) who doesn't enjoy so much garlic that you can smell it from the kitchen as the waitperson brings your food. A hint of garlic is enough for me.

I loved HE AND SHE, but mainly due to Jack Cassidy who stole the show from everyone. That show only ran one season, much to my surprise. It was literate and well done in every aspect, but it just didn't catch the audience's fancy, I guess.

boil water in a pan.
dump in macaroni from a box
add butter, milk, and the orange stuff from the envelope that came with the box.
mix together and serve.
Sometimes I add cut up hot dog weiners.

When I worked retail I always had to work the day after Thanksgiving. So I never was able to enjoy that shopping day. ;)

Last year I went to K-Mart at 6:00 am to get the $2.50 Christmas DVDs that were advertised. I braved the crowd and finally made my way through the fleshy shoppers and arrived in the video section only to find that they didn't even have the advertised Christmas DVDs in stock. All of the clerks were in hiding and so I was unable to get anyone to assist me. I left, but not before noticing the lines and lines and lines of people at the check out registers. At that point I was happy that they DIDN'T have the DVDs that I wanted, otherwise I think I would still be in line, they were that long.

I will sleep in this day afte Thanksgiving.

As you can tell from my multiple posts, I am very, very, very bored here at work today!

Right now I am drinking the coffee that my supervisor brought in for me (she is a sweetheart!!) and eating little halloween bags of peanut butter M&Ms.

My in-box is empty and I know not what to do with myself. I feel as though I am wasting the tax-payers money, so I best find something to do.

Good morning all
Have you ever had a night where you simply can't sleep? I had such a night last night. I finally felt a bit sleep at around 3:30, and drifted off around 4. As a result I am tired and cranky this morning. Not a good way to start the week. At least it's a short week...

My all time favorite pasta recipe.
Boil up some salad maraconi (looks like elbow maraconi cut in half)
Rinse and let it cool.
Cut up some cheddar cheese into chunks, defrost some frozen peas. Add both to the pasta with some mayonaise until well blended.
A very simple pasta salad, but it's my absolute favorite.
Hmmm...might have to make that tonight..

Off to get a very strong cup of coffee...

I have to type this quickly, since my mom stayed home today and insists upon taking me to the urgent care clinic for my flu shot. The flu season is going to be quite bad this year, I've heard, so it probably is good that I go. Still...why can't it be like when I was a little girl and my mom offered to treat me to Baskin Robbins afterwards??

I love basic pasta dishes like spaghetti, lasagna, linguini, fettucini alfredo...I could NEVER do that Atkins Diet. I love me my carbs!

BK--I want to hear the news! Come on everyone, post!!!

HollyLynn--I believe the name of the movie with Tucci and Rossellini was Big Night.

Jose--thanks for the ticket offer for Camelot from the other day! Actually, I checked out the website and found out about the ten dollar tickets for college students, so I'm going to try and get one of those. Sometimes I just LOVE having that student ID!

Off to flu-shotland.

Forgive me, Noel. I didn't mean to sound as though I were quibbling with your terminology. You're quite correct, bay scallops are the small ones. It's just that I find bay scallops somewhat rubbery, and sea scallops are nice and juicy and meaty. They are a bit large for over pasta, but you can just slice them in half or in quarters if you like. They're also a bit more expensive, but worth it, I think.

Anyway, we wound up only going to Wal-Mart for water, milk, and eggs, and will do the grocery shopping tomorrow. We need to come up with a list as this shopping trip will be The Big One, what with Turkey Day just around the corner and all.

BK, where do you keep the picture of The Lady With Green Soap? In one of the bathrooms, or someplace unexpected? I'd love to visit sometime, your tastes are so eclectic it's bound to be as interesting as the Addams Family Mansion (which I always, as a child, considered my dream home).

Good Morning, Good Day...

Well, I slept in... and my sinuses are still a bit "full", but I'm still here... Alive and sort of kicking.. well, at least typing away at the computer keyboard.

It's a beautiful day outside, and I should get out in it soon - there's rain on the way this afternoon. But until then...

Pasta recipes... I've grown very fond of very simple pan sauces lately.

-Crushed tomatoes, red chile flakes, garlic, oregano, some pasta water.
-Butter(!), sage leaves, s&p, pasta water - This is amazing over pumpin ravioli!
-Or the classic olive oil and garlic... and I like my garlic slightly browned. *And remember, if you want a LOT of garlic flavor, start sauteeing the garlic in COLD oil. Otherwise, saute in hot oil. -And maybe some brocolli rabe thrown in over orechiette.

*On a related note, the prix-fixe All You Can Eat Pasta dinner at Becco in New York City is a true deal, and a true meal. Salad and/or antipasti, followed by three types of pasta. They just bring the pans up from the kitchen and scoop away onto your plates. YUMMY! The pasta is sooo fresh, and the sauces... WOW! I love their Veal Bolognese. Throw in a bottle from their extensive $20/bottle wine list, and you've got a wonderful dinner.

As for milk - and I'm not sure how this thead started... I go through phases... but I have become a skim milk convert... Drinking whole milk sometimes feels like drinking Elmer's Glue to me.

Well, I'm off to be productive.. I think.. The joys of a day off.

The other day we were talking about Neil Simon, and I'd mentioned how his first memoire, Rewrites, was a dear book to Dear Wife Joy and me.

Way back when she was living in Washington, DC, and I in New York, we were both reading it at the same time. The book covers Doc Simon's life from the time of his first play, Come Blow Your Home, to the time something earth-shattering happened to him in the early 1970's. I'd thought this event was rather well-known, as he'd written a play about it which has been filmed. But Joy was unaware as she read the book, a few chapters behind me.

All sorts of details of the Simons' life led Joy to believe that she and I were very much like Joan and Neil. Like the characters in Barefoot in the Park, he was a stuffed-shirt and she was loosening him up. (Or was this a description of us?) Neil was a writer; Joan played tennis. True of us as well. Eventually, Joy took the screen name Joan Simon.

Now, when I got the idea that Joy was unaware of how the story would end, I didn't have the heart to tip her off. She was reading the book and loving it, and it was Simon's job to relate the story, not mine. So, Joy's telling me she's reading about how a doctor looked at a little bruise Joan got while playing tennis, and I'm keeping mum.

A day later, I pick up the phone, and there are tears on the other side of the line. I knew what had happened: "It's Joan, isn't it?" <sniffle, sniffle> "It's O.K., honey - we're not exactly like them."

Gee, and what stopped you from suggesting to your mom that you both stop at Baskin-Robbins on your way back? Moms can be nostalgic, too....and they like to find out that things that were special to them when you were little remain special to you!

Here is a link to the Playbill On-Line story about recent award winners in theatre in the Los Angeles area. Lorna Luft's show Songs My Mother Taught Me got an Ovation award. She and Ken and Mitzi Welch put it together (they of the Carol Burnett Show and other variety venues) There is talk of bringing it to NYC. Good afternoon all!

I had to wait all morning for a computer at school. Paper writing season is in its dying and most dangerous stretch.

I for one, am still working on my essay on Islamic and Sufi Nationalism in 19th Century Sudan. It is just about as exciting to write as you can imagine!

I don't really make pasta all that often although all of your recipes sound delish. Well everything except for the mayonnaise DR Ann adds to macaroni. In the words of Kate Monster: ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!! :)

I do like creamy pastas like fettucinne Alfredo or Carbonara although they are reeeeeaaaalllly bad for you so I have to stay away. I like pesto sauce like DR Craig/Skippy and anything with seafood in it.

My favorite type of pasta though has to be gnocchi. I grew up in a neighborhood full of Italians. When someone's grandmother made gnocchi I was always first in line :)

Varese Sarabande -- along with HHW friend Nick Redman -- have offered up a wonderful Christmas present for film music lovers:

A 2-CD recording from master elements of one of filmdom's finest achievements -- Alfred Newman's stupendous score for "The Robe."

This is the 50th Anniversary of "The Robe", and this recording represents the first presentation of all the music from the film mastered from its original elements.

VareseSarabande.com is where the title can be ordered, look under Club Titles or search "The Robe".

It is available in very limited quantities.

BK - I didn't think you noticed. I've been shopping and cooking and cleaning because we have 16 people coming for Thanksgiving and I am seeing the Charles Busch AUNTIE MAME tonight and NEVER GONNA DANCE on Wednesday so I can't do anything those nights. I don't have your dirty noodle recipe. If you've lost it I'll do an unseemly search.

The following review appeared in Ken Mandelbaum's column today:

JEEPERS CREEPERS (Red Circle)

When Bruce Kimmel was with Varese Sarabande, he produced a wide variety of compilation discs, ranging from the valuable "Unsung Musicals" and "Lost in Boston" series to separate CDs devoted to Sondheim, Bacharach, Simon, Shakespeare, Peter Pan, and Cinderella.

Kimmel is now the producer of Jeepers Creepers, a collection of songs written for or used in horror movies, for a new label, Red Circle. It has been produced with Richard Valley and Tom Amorosi, the publishers of Scarlet Street magazine, and includes extensive and amusing notes by Valley on each film represented. Jeepers Creepers is available at www.scarletstreet.com.

Quite appropriately, the disc opens with a trashy song from a trashy picture: Tammi Tappan warbles the title number from the supremely tacky, immensely lurid Who Killed Teddy Bear?, starring Sal Mineo and two musical Mames, Juliet Prowse and Elaine Stritch. (When will someone reissue this picture on DVD?)

This is a somewhat odd notion for a compilation disc. That's because, for the most part, the songs are in no way creepy, and don't really reflect the horror of the films in which they were featured. The outstanding tracks: Rebecca Luker in a pretty Cahn/Van Heusen song cut from Journey to the Center of the Earth; Judy Kaye, in a mock-operetta ditty from Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man; the title tune from Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, performed by Christiane Noll; Burt Bacharach and Mack David's title song for The Blob, featuring Alison Fraser; Brent Barrett in "Stella By Starlight," heard in The Uninvited and The Nutty Professor; and Jason Graae in a medley of songs from teenage, rock 'n' roll horror movies.

There's also music from Mothra, Circus of Horrors, The Mummy's Curse, and Attack of the Puppet People (the latter sung by the daughter of the film's producer), with performances by Sharon McNight, Lynnette Perry, Michelle Nicastro, Katherine Helmond (who mostly talks her way through the title song from What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?), and the irrepressible Guy Haines.

He couldn't mention Susan Gordon by name?

That's a good review from our Ken. I am jiggy with that review.

WEL: I always notice. And seeing shows and having people in is no excuse to stay away for a whole weekend. We need you back where you belong, like Dolly Levi Gallagher.

I'm a gettin' hungry for PASTA.

And I've passed on our Ken's comment re Guy Haines - I, too, feel he's irrepressable.

I'm a fan of pasta with any type of pesto based sauce. Linguini with red clam sauce (Johnnie's in NYC has the best red clam sauce I've ever had) isn't bad.

Hey all. Yeah for recipe day. Although pasta is not my favorite (BK please note :) )

I have a question for anyone who has made red clam sauce. HOW DO YOU MAKE IT? I'd really like to know.

I was just looking at the calendar. There are a plethora of birthdays approaching and since I will be errant and truant for a lot of December and around the Thanksgiving holiday as well, I'm going to make a blanket Happy Birthday wish to many HKs since I will possibly miss the celebrations (as I did with DR Jason's birthday), so here goes:

HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY TO:

DivaRobbie whose birthday (11/27) falls on Turkey Day as well. Happy Birthday

Jane whose birthday (12/7) falls on another dear friend's birthday. She's a nurse and she lives in Ann Arbor, MI. So Happy Birthday Jane and Alison

BK whose birthday (12/8) also falls on my brother's birthday (the one being sent to Iraq) so Happy Birthday to BK and Frank

MBarnum whose birthday falls on 12/10. It doesn't fall on anyone elses birthday that I know of but Happy Birthday to a Pulp Fiction King (or Queen, your choice ;))

JB-NYC whose birthday falls on 12/12. Again, it doesn't fall on anyone elses birthday that I know, but it's alliterative (kind of). Happy Birthday

Tom from Oz whose birthday falls on 12/14. If it was February it would be Valentines Day but it's not, it's Tom's birthday. Happy Birthday to our favorite Man from Down Under

William F. Orr (first it was TFO, now it's WFO) who is a pre-Christmas present to his friends at HHW. His birthday is 12/23. Even though I haven't needed it, thanks for all your help to the students who needed your math tutoring. And may 2004 be better for you. May the Karma King smile on You and Joe. Happy Birthday

Maya whose birthday is 12/29. She becomes legal in all states on this date folks, so watch out! Happy Birthday Maya

And those are your calendar reminders for today, November 24, 2003 ::)

This is one tradition that I wish we had here in Canada. We miss out on your biggest shopping day of the year.

But we make up for it with our own biggest shopping day of the year, Boxing Day, December 26th. It always cracks me up that the day AFTER Christmas could be the biggest shopping day. But it is such a tradition. I love it.

I usually wait for a couple of days after Christmas before I head to either Barnes and Noble or Borders to get my daily desk calendars after they've been marked half off. Funny, but the Peanuts desk calendars are always sold out after Chrstmas but other ones (like WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE), there are zillions of those left over.

Recipes, that's what we need. It's funny, people want these topics and then those that want them never show up the day I do them.

Shall I assume you are talking about me? :)

Well, you cannot blame someone for not posting recipes when they did not even know today was recipe day. For some reason I had a hard time getting to the second part of your notes. The computer just froze in transition for like 10 minutes! So I am just now trying to catch up and I will post my favorite recipes shortly.

Are you happy now? :)

My favorite pasta recipe is this:

Cook pasta, open jar of sauce, heat jar of sauce, combine with pasta, eat.

That's it.

I have a recipe for Manicotti Crepes that I've never made (I got it from the former Rosie O'Donnell TV show website), but it just sounds really good. I've posted it on a previous "Recipe Day," but that was in the pre-re-built HHW. So here it is again, and if someone ever makes it (someday I will), let me know how it is:

MANICOTTI CREPES
Make Joann’s tomato sauce (below, or use your own), make filling then make the crepes. To assemble: In a roasting pan, add a layer of sauce. Take a crepe and fill with 2 tablespoons filling. Place a slice of mozzarella on top of filling and roll crepe. Place the crepe, seam side down, in the roasting pan. Repeat until all crepes are used and pan is filled. Add another layer of sauce and then another slice of cheese on top of each crepe. Bake for about 20 minutes.

CREPE INGREDIENTS:

6 large eggs
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup water
3/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups of flour
Butter for frying

CREPE DIRECTIONS:

In large bowl mix first four ingredients. Add flour slowly and mix well. Let stand for 20 minutes. Melt butter in a small frying pan. Pour mix into pan, about the size of a silver dollar, and rotate pan to spread batter. Cook on both sides until desired doneness. (Makes approximately 24)

FILLING INGREDIENTS:

one 3 lb. Container of Ricotta cheese
2 lb. Mozzarella
1/2 cup grating cheese
fresh 1/4 cup parsley or 1 tsp. dried
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

FILLING DIRECTIONS:

Cut 48 slices of mozzarella and set aside. Grate remaining Mozzarella and mix into ricotta. Add grating cheese, parsley and garlic and mix well.

JOANN’S TOMATO SAUCE INGREDIENTS:

4 tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin)
1 small onion (diced)
1/2 green pepper (finely chopped)
1 stalk celery (finely chopped)
1 carrot (finely chopped)
4 cloves garlic
1 cup wine (dry white – Joann uses Chablis)
1 large can whole plum tomatoes
2 large can crushed tomatoes
2 cups of water or stock
1/4-tsp. red pepper (ground)
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. thyme (ground)
1 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. sage (ground)
1 tbsp. basil (dried)
1 tbsp. parsley (dried) or 1/2 cup fresh chopped fine
1/2 cup hard cheese (Parmesan or Romano, your choice)

JOANN’S TOMATO SAUCE DIRECTIONS:

Add oil to pan. Sauté onion, green pepper and carrot till onion is translucent. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds. Then deglaze pan with wine-scraping bottom of pan, simmer for about 1 minute to let alcohol cook off. Add 2 cans crushed tomatoes.

In large bowl, squeeze or chop whole plum tomatoes into small pieces. Add to sauce pot. Add water or stock. Add all herbs, seasonings and cheese and let simmer low for 1 hour (stirring and scraping bottom of pot every 15 minutes till done).

Yep here on December 26th all calendars are 50% off.

It's so bizarre. IT feels like it's much closer to Christmas than it. Cause I've already bought all the stuff that I send off in the mail. But I have nothing yet for anyone here!

I'm back!

The flu shot didn't happen because when we got to the clinic, it was totally packed and the wait was set for like an hour and a half. My family and I just decided, noooo, we'll come back another time.

Ron--You're totally right about me suggesting to my mom that she buy me ice cream! Though these days, now that I'm bringing in some income of my own, I could always treat her too!

BK--Great review from Ken! :D

Noel--What a sweet story! *Hums Isn't It Romantic*

Ben--thanks for the early birthday wishes! Very, very sweet of you!

I have such a yen for ice cream right now. And if I have a yen for ice cream, does that mean I have a peso or a Euro or a Canadian dollar for ice cream too? Ladies and gentlemen...this has been an exercise in Kimmelese.

Even though I have watched it in syndication for over 30 years - there are Perry Mason episodes that come up, I have never seen.

I like the way they did that series. It started out with a story featuring people we didn't know - and THEN they contacted Perry Mason or he got involved. Now and then they stumbled on a case - but usually it was the other way around.

Unlike Jessica who found murder everywhere she went, Perry usually was retained by the innocent person.

Lots of location shooting, lots of cars, and lots of fashion....of course in the last years all the women wore wigs instead of being coiffed, but that was a small distraction.

I love Raymond Burr as Perry Mason....does anyone else have any favorite episodes? Mine is of course, The Case of the Bogus Books!

Surely you gourmonds have more pasta recipes. We need a good carbonara, a good alfredo, a good marinara, and if I get to it I'll reprint my recipe for my famous Wacky Noodles, which everyone seems to think SOUNDS awful until they actually try it - then they become addicted. Yes, Virginia, they become addicted and have a wacky noodle on their back.

I remember HE AND SHE fondly, which also starred Jack Cassidy, one of my favourite actors...very funny.

One of the bits I remember was a guy named O'Brien or something being introduced to a guy whose last name was Mouse. The exchange went something like this:

Mouse: O'Brien, that's an Irish name, isn't it?

O'Brien: Mouse, that's a Disney name, isn't it?

It actually got a brief revival a few years back, I believe on Nickalodeon.

My absolute favourite pasta recipe would have to be for a four-way of Cincinnati Chili. Cincinnati Chili is a thing of joy unto itself and can only be found in Cincinnati and environs. It is a Greek concoction and is delicious. It's often poured over a smallish hot dog and sprinkled with onions and topped with a towering pile of grated cheese ( a mild cheddar). This is called a Coney Island.

A Four-way is Cincinnati Chili pour over spaghetti with onions and, again, masses of cheese. Culinary heaven and heart-burn.

There are other variations of this concoction.

A two-way is just chili and spaghetti.
A three-way is chili, cheese, and spaghetti.
A five-way is chili, cheese, onions, spaghetti, with kidney beans in the chili.

But I must caution! True Cincy chili does not have beans in it! Actually, as far as I'm concerned. Any true chili should not have beans in it!

There are many variations on the actual recipe itself, but all still have that very distinct taste. Denizens of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky all have their favourite chili parlors where this is produced. Some think Empress chili is the best, some think Skyline, some think Gold Star (both Gold Star and Skyline are chains...I prefer Gold Star...just because there seem to be more of them readily accessible, but there's not that much difference really), but the very best for my money is Dixie Chili in Newport, Kentucky, just across the Ohio from Cincy. Great Coneys and 4-ways.

There was for a brief time about a year and two ago, an actual Cincy chili parlor out in Van Nuys, CA. It was very good, made by a cook who grew up in Cincy and had worked for Skyline. He was a great cook, but a lousy businessman. Unfortunately, despite a very devoted but small clientele of mostly former Ohioans, he couldn't stay afloat.

Here's a recipe I've got for it:

2 to 2 and half lbs. of beef
1tsb. olive oil
1 and half tsp. ground cinnamon
2tsp. ground cumin
3tbsp. chili powder
one half tsp. crushed red pepper
1tsp. ground allspice
1tbsp. salt
1 medium onion chopped
4 garlic cloves, crushed
1 12oz. can tomato paste
1 15-oz. cans of tomato sauce
4 cups water
2 tbsp. vinegar
2tsp Worchestershire sauce
4 bay leaves
10z. block unsweetened baking chocolate
half tsp. ground cayenne peppers

Add olive oil to a large (4-6) quart pot over medium heat. Add first 10 ingredients. Stir until meat slightly browned. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, then simmer for 1 and half to 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Serves 6-8. Serve with cheese, raw onion, over spaghetti or hot dogs (this recipe is a hybrid of several local versions)

As I say, these recipes vary from person to person. One can also buy cans or fixings from the various restaurants in Cincy. I brought a half dozen home from my last trip. Some say it's the chocolate and the cinnamon that give it its distinction. I don't know, but it sure is good stuff! Yum!

I, too, like Perry Mason. Seeing it always makes me feel like I'm home from school - sick, playing sick, or on vacation. Remember when it was on TBS from 11:05 to 12:05, then on channel 4 from 12:00 to 1:00? A double shot of Perry; it just doesn't get any better than that.

Don't recall any specific episodes offhand, but I do know I much prefer the ones with Lt. Trag (Ray Collins) and DA Hamilton "Burger Bits" Burger. The later ones felt a bit flat to me, while the earlier ones had a great ensemble that set off sparks together.

MBarnum: The Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was done in the late '70s, I do believe. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I always thought it was kind of cute and charming that a bunch of kids making their own Thaksgiving dinner would come up with toast, popcorn, and jelly beans. The only things 8-year-olds know how to "cook!"

A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING was done in 1973. I don't think any of the CHARLIE BROWN specials work as well as the first four, the ones with the original voice cast: CHRISTMAS, GREAT PUMPKIN, ALL STARS, SO YOU'RE IN LOVE. Afterwards, they seem to be missing something.

Some of my other favorite episodes are Case of the Madcap Modiste with guest stars Leslie Parrish and Dorothy Neumann, Case of the Ancient Romeo with Rex Reason, and Case of the Laughing Clown with Gloria Talbott.

Oddly enough I was trying to transfer my tape of Bogus Books to DVD but the sound sync kept getting out of whack. I am trying to get all of Allison's episodes transferred to DVD for us, JRand53...but it ain't working! >:(

PERRY MASON is great fun to watch, and it's amazing how many of the suspects ended up having wonderful careers in film and television.

However, to take up just a bit for Jessica Fletcher, I never felt PERRY MASON gave enough clues to be able to solve the murder mysteries. On MURDER SHE WROTE, the clues are all right there, and if you're paying close attention, you can solve it before Jessica. I don't think the MASON shows offer quite the same degree of fairness. It more often seemed like a wild guessing game to arrive at the identity of the killer before Mason revealed it.

they have run Perry Mason here on channel 12 (Portland) at noon weekdays for almost 35 years straight!

It would be nice if they would release those episodes on DVD at stores (you can currently get them through mail order where you get one disc a month...at that rate it would take years for me to get to the episodes that I want!!)

Both Perry Mason and Murder, She Wrote had credibility issues, fer sure.

With Murder She Wrote, you had to swallow the conceit that everywhere Jessica went, someone was murdered (and she never seemed to run out of relatives to be the prime suspect). This woman obviously was the kiss of death!

With Perry Mason, since the guy was a criminal defense lawyer, it was at least a teensy bit more likely that he would continually bump up against murder cases. But willing of suspension of disbelief was sometimes strained to the breaking point as every week, Perry tricked yet another murderer into an hysterical confession on the witness stand.

Still, if you like either (or both) of these shows, you just tacitly agree to overlook this stuff, sit back and enjoy the ride!

Adam-12 had quite a little run on TVLand just recently. Over now, of course. TVLand continues to decline, with gems like Mr. Ed and The Flying Nun replacing shows like Barney Miller and Mary Tyler Moore.

"1-Adam-12, 1-Adam-12, see the man about..." what a strange way to phrase it! What was the deal with that, anybody know?

I liked Adam 12 okay, but dearly miss Dragnet. You've gotta love the episode where Frank's wife is out of town, so buddy Joe comes to stay at his house. They have a card party with a couple of other guys, Frank makes really disgusting sandwiches involving pimento, peanut butter and minced garlic, neighbors keep breaking up the card party to ask Frank for favors since he's the friendly neighborhood cop, and finally Frank and Joe bust a "college student" who comes to the WRONG door to pull her magazine subscription scam.

Why don't they still make shows like that today?

Why do I not know peanut butter M&Ms?????

OH, Jennifer, you must try them. I simply cannot stop eating them once I have a bag of the candies...I won't even touch the regular ones now! These are in the dark orange packages!

Charles: You're right that Skyline Chili is mainly in the midwest: Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan - but it's also got a couple of restaurants here in Florida! I first saw one a couple of years ago and couldn't believe it! Steak 'n' Shake just opened down here, too - The Hubby and I would eat there every weekend if we weren't concerned about...oh, mortality and stuff.

No Skylines in LA yet, but just you wait!

True MATTH - but the absolute WORST about not playing fair with clues was Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law who would always in the last few minutes come up with a clue or evidence that we were NEVER told about....the date on a letter - or even stationery from a hotel written after an addition was built on it but dated before....how would we know that? It was outrageous!

This is similar to the manicotti recipe I make. Although I like to use frozen spinach. And sometimes I chop mushrooms. And it's easy and cheaper to use lasagna noodles.

Here is another interesting manicotti recipe that I have made. The very interesting part is that you don't have to boil the noodles before stuffing them. But you must chill them overnight (or make them first thing in the morning). It's a very different idea.

Joel and I share the very same birthday - and if you peruse the archives, you might even find out when. Or I can just post it after you take a guess :)

You can get a complete episode guide to Perry Mason and just about every other show at

www.tvtome.com

Just type the name of the show in the search at the top of the screen.

***

One of the Sunday papers had a list of this week's DVD releases. One was a Flash Gordon box set and the other was a Marx Brothers box set. Since there was no infor other than the release date I wonder if any of you DRs have details as to what either of these box sets include.

Spaghetti a la Carbonara

1 lb. spaghetti
1/2 lb. pancetta
2 tbs. Olive Oil
1/2 cup dry white wine
4 large eggs
1 cup grated cheese (whatever combination of Parmigiano or Romano you like best)
2 cloves garlic
Freshly ground pepper to taste

First, put a large ceramic bowl in the oven to warm up (200° should do) and put a pot of well-salted water (it should taste like salt water, not just water with salt in it) on the stove to boil. If you don't have a pasta bowl (which, to be honest, I don't), you can finish the dish in the skillet you fry the pancetta in (which will significantly increase the chances of the sauce breaking).

Dice the pancetta into 1/4" to 1/2" cubes and fry in a little bit of olive oil until lightly browned. Add about a half cup of white wine to the pan and reduce by about 1/2. Set this aside. Yes, there's gonna be a lot of oil and fat. Get used to it.

Boil a your pasta until al-dente. While the pasta is boiling mix four eggs with two pulverized garlic cloves (one of the few instances where the use of a garlic press is perfectly fine) and a cup of grated cheese (I use 100% parmigiano, Cooks Illustrated recommends 3/4 cup parmigiano and 1/4 cup romano, traditional recipes call for 100% romano) until well blended. When the pasta is cooked, drain and toss with the cooked pancetta. Add the egg mixture, toss, grind in about a teaspoon of black pepper (less or more to your preference) and serve.

Serves 4-6 adults (depending on how much they can eat -- might serve BK and one other)

That is a good one...the one where the officer is killed. My favorite is the one where Reed and Malloy aid the single mother whose car has been stolen. In the trunk of the car are her children's Christmas gifts, including a TV set, and it is Christmas Eve. Love that episode!!

The show, and particularly Malloy, remind me so much of my late brother Jack, who was a state police officer. Martin Milner is almost the spitting image of my brother!

Early Happy Birthday to:

DNR (that's Dear Non-Reader) BB (Bruce's Brother) Joel. Again, I don't know his birthday, but since I'll probably miss it, Oh, Happy Day (who sang that song? I forget. It was a late 60s or 70s pop hit or maybe I'm confusing it in my head with Day by Day from Godspell)

Thanks, DR MBarnum. I will do a search for it. I have several of those series episode books, and I'd love to add PERRY to my collection.

As for credibility issues, one must suspend disbelief with ALL episodic television, and I have no problem with doing it for mysteries. To give me a mystery to solve each week, who cares that it involves the same detective/attorney. The play's the thing....

Love Godzilla, and I'm told that the original cut of Gojira is coming to DVD (the one w/o Raymond Burr) - the original cut is really amazing - quite someber and serious and beautifully done. But, I'm also fond of the Burr version, too. I had a chicken salad sandwich for lunch. Trying to be a good boy until the big Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday (with my friends the Jones's). Dear reader Pogue's recipe also sounds quite yummiliscious, but not as yummiliscious as the carbonara.

THE PEARL OF DEATH looked extraordinary. Really, the deep blacks and every scale of gray looked simply smashing to me. Exceptionally sharp transfer except for one street scene where things go weirdly out of focus for a second. I thought maybe the cameraman was trying to focus on the matchwoman in the street so we could see it was villainess Naomi Drake, but I think it was just one scene where they had to use a 16 mm print or something to cover deterioration. I saw a tiny, tiny bit of speckling in one scene, too, but toherwise, it looked as good as CASABLANCA does and wonderfully clear mono sound.

The scene below comes from the very end of the picture,

I remember watching "Adam-12" when I was a wee lad - had to believe I was ever "wee", but I was. I don't really remember any particular episode, but I always thought the dark-haired guy was very attractive. ;D I seem to remember "Adam-12" being shown back to back with Marcus Welby - I'm not sure if these were in original run or syndication. I guess I could check somewhere on the net right now, but...

I remember going to a restaurant that claimed to have the REAL Fettucine Alredo, and they prepared it tableside. I remember expecting the usual eggs, cream and cheese, but it turned out that their whole sauce was made out of cheese(!), a very rich, semi-soft cheese that melted into a perfect sauce. They would put blocks of the cheese into a pan, put the pan over a burner, and let it melt slowly. Once it was melted down, they added the pasta and some pasta water if the "sauce" was too thick. YUMMY! And very easy to make.

Well, I ran my errands, and ended up going to one of my favorite little home decor/gift shops to pick up some Christmas ornaments. She always has a great selection, and this year is no exception. I even bought my opening night "favors" there last week - they had a whole tree full of crown ornaments, and since I'm doing Camelot... Perfect. Well, my niece and nephew saw me wrapping them up, and they wanted a crown or two for themselves. So... being the good uncle... Then I noticed these new gel ornaments - kind of like oversized window clings, and I picked up a few packets of those. Then there were the cute jingle bell ornaments, etc., etc., etc... About $90 later... Ah, well...

Then I headed over to Ukrop's for some grocery shopping, and I stocked up Land 'O Lakes butter since it was on sale! I had planned to bake today, but I have a feeling I may just hit the bakery in the morning before heading back. Just not feeling like being on my feet in the kitchen right now. -But knowing my past baking history, I'll probably get my "baking jones" sometime around 11:30pm. We'll see...

I'm also having dinner tonight with a new theatre professor here in Richmond - he used to be an actor in NYC - he was in LES MIZ for almost the entire run (with a few breaks here and there for other shows). They're starting a new musical theatre course this spring, and I'm gonna try to help out when I can - when I'm in town.

On a more serious note, there was an "incident" here in Richmond last night, and it greatly affected a friend of mine. If all you H/Ks could send some good and comforting vibes towards this corner of the Commonwealth, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. :)

Yes, of course, I don't want the PERRY MASON book JUST for an episode guide. I know full well there are plenty of those available on the web. But those books often have a "making of" aspect to them that I find really fascinating, and that's the real draw for me in those books. The ones on THE TWILIGHT ZONE and THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW are the best I've come across, I think.

the Universal Sherlock Holmes films just give me a warm fuzzy feeling, as do most of Universal's horror and suspense films from the 40s. As a kid and young teen in the 70s I watched many of those films on tv each weekend.

Anyone ever see Universal's MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM from 1944? Love it, love it, love it! Good little mystery and some great 1940s music including that hit song BOOGIE WOOGIE BOOGIE MAN! LOL!

Why is it that I can't summon up tremendous energy or enthusiasm to want to see WONDERFUL TOWN? Having seen Rosalind Russell do it on TV at the Museum of TV and Radio, and knowing that this is a scaled down, little better than concert rendering of the show as adapted at Encores! (or that the Russell video was free whereby tickets for this revival will go for $90), I'm just not wild to see it. The show isn't a great favorite, though, I'll admit, I've never seen it on stage live, so maybe that would make a difference. Maybe it's just revivals that I'm a little tired of. I'd much rather see WICKED.

S. Woody To The Rescue!

I found this over at a part of the Sondheim.com site that hasn't crashed:

The Real A's Wacky Noodles

1 pound wide egg noodles
1 pint (8oz.) sour cream
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Minced dried onions
2 tbs ketchup
1 cup milk
salt and pepper

Boil the noodles, drain and put back in the pot. Add soup, a generous helping of minced dried onions, the milk and salt and pepper to taste. Mix together, then heat. Add the ketchup. Continue heating. (The ketchup is a flavor thing, you may want to add a bit more than the 2 tbs). Stir every now and then. When it's hot, add the sour cream and continue heating for another two or three minutes, always stirring (otherwise noodles will stick to the bottom of the pot and you DON'T want that - it's yucky). Turn the heat off, add more salt to taste and chow down you lucky eaters. Oh, now look, I've started to drool. I'm going to have to make me a batch as soon as I finish writing this column...

As for my own favorite pasta topping, I start with a basic tomato sauce of crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, fresh Roma tomatoes (seeded and roughly chopped), plus a decent amount of dried oregano, basil, and crushed red pepper, all together in a saucepan with some red wine to thin and flavor. Let simmer over low heat. When ready, I stir in a few handfulls of fresh spinach (the bagged kind works great) and let the greens wilt. Serve atop spaghetti, linguine, fettucine, or what you want, with fresh grated parmesan to taste. (Not the stuff in the green box! I get out my microplane file from the hardware store for this stuff. And a wedge of real parmesan, from Italy, please.)

What I think is amazing is that whe you mix Nestle's Quik, or Hershey's syrup or Ovaltine in a glass of milk, the drinking of said milk goes much faster than it does without the flavoring.

I used to love milk, but I could never drink it as fast as I could when I mixed it with chocolate.

There is a book on Perry Mason TV show. I have it. Can't recall the title off hand, but am thinking the author is Steven Cox.

The library where I work doesn't have the Stephen Cox Perry Mason book (although we do have other TV show books by him) but it does has this book:

"The Perry Mason TV show book : the complete story of America's favorite television lawyer" by two of his greatest fans, Brian Kelleher and Diana Merrill. I t was published by St. Martin's Press in 1987. The description reads: Discusses the creation, production, characters, and 275 episodes of the mystery show featuring the popular fictitious lawyer.

And congratulations to HHW God #4, MATTH!!

Dear Readers--I think my job interview went fairly well this morning. So, please send good vibes my way and cross all your bodily digits and extremities in the hope that I get invited back for the next step in the selection process.

Dear Reader Tom from Oz--That Mendelssohn fellow should have done more film scores, I think.

Regarding shopping on Black Friday--Several years ago, my brother was to be married in early January and my mother needed a dress for the occasion. My mother does not drive, and the only way for her to get to the stores was if I chauffeured. The only date that worked on our schedules to go shopping for said dress was the day after Thanksgiving. The first dress we saw at the first store we stopped at was quite lovely, I thought, but, of course, we had to see what else was available. So after schlepping from here to there and from there to here with all the other holiday shoppers, what dress did my beloved mother select? You got it! The first one we saw. To this day I remind dear mum that I have yet to forgive her for that ordeal. ;)

Dear Reader Ben--Must report that I missed the show with Lorna Luft while it was here. The reviews were glowing, though.

Re milk--If it isn't made with U-bet syrup, it's not chocolate milk. Add seltzer, and you've got a bona fide egg cream. (Ahhh, Brooklyn. The motherland.)

Yes, I remember those flavor straws, but they ran out of flavor before you ran out of milk.

DR Ron, do you remember Captain Midnight on TV, sponsored by Ovaltine?

Thanks you so much, DR George, with the PERRY MASON TV book info. I'd love to have this book. Now to go search for it.

Pasta recipe (adapted from Marcella Hazan):

[NB: This recipe has NOT been approved by the American Heart Association]

Break up about a pound of sweet Italian sausage into small pieces and place in a large frying pan. Add one onion, coarsely diced, and saute, stirring all the while, until the sausage is browned and the onions translucent. Add one cup heavy whipping cream and stir over low heat, just until the cream begins to bubble. Add cracked pepper to taste (I like a lot!) and stir. While you've been cooking this sauce, you have also been cooking rotelli to the al dente stage. Pour the sauce over the pasta in a large bowl and toss. Buon appetito!

The Wacky Noodles sounds pretty good to me too. :P

And since I do have a container of sour cream in the fridge... Hmm...

As for chocolate milk, I went through phases that were mainly determined by what was on sale that week at the store - and/or what my parents put in the shopping cart that week. I think I drank more Nestle's Quik growing up, but I have always loved Ovaltine - especially warm/hot - and Hershey's and milk is good too. *And they have GREEN Hershey's now too - ???? *I always liked "experimenting to see just how much Quik and/or Ovaltine you could or could not dissolve in a glass of milk. And did anyone else pour in more milk if there was some "sludge" at the bottom of the glass.

Well... I've been sitting here on the couch, watching TV and surfing the web since my last post... And now I think I'm going to take a short nap before heading out to dinner... just that kind of lazy day. :) ::)

Oh, and Lorna Luft's show was also done here in Richmond at the University of Richmond. I think she premiered it here - ??? - or at least some form of it. She performed it in conjunction with her appearance as Mama Rose in Gypsy a UR.

Well, I'm off to Nap-land... I guess that comes after Lap-land and Map-land... Oap-land - ????

MMMM, Nestle's Quick. Yummm. Although I only like Chocolate. For some reason, I abhor Strawberry Quick. Just the sight of a glass makes my stomach do flip-flops. Milk should only be straight up or chocolate (in my humble opinion)

Straight milk, Ben, as opposed to homo milk?

Yes, Virginia, there's three or four pages in Kritzerland devoted to Flavor Straws.

Good vibes and good xylophones to dear reader Jay.

Which brings me to dear reader Sandra's one post today, which consisted of one word: Oy. We need at least three words in every post, Sandra. For example, you could have posted three oys and that would have been fine. Two oys is not fine, nor is one. One oy will simply not do. Or at least put a vey with it. Of course, you'd still need one more word, perhaps oy vey hey or oy vey day or oy vey way.

JRand53, did your Navarre YOU BET YOUR LIFE disk have the Fay Spain episode? It is pretty funny. Last night I finished off my Navarre DVD and the last one had Joanne Lee of THE BRAIN EATERS and PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE fame (and who passed away last month of bone cancer). She was fun and pretty darn smart! Hey, wait, isn't that the Fairfax delicatessan episode? Hmmmm. Well, anyway, she mentions that she is an actress and just made a couple of science fiction movies (didn't name them, however).

I think BK will be spending his entire weekend making and eating pasta. :P

The Wacky Pasta Recipe is making me ill just at the thought of it. I can't even LOOK at sour cream without getting nauseous.

Speaking of which, Chanukah is right around the corner (it would of course take the goyishe girl here to bring that up). How do you all like your latkes? Applesauce or sour cream? Traditional potato or newfangled carrot or sweet potato? Fried or baked?

I like latkes a lot. :)

Mmm... loves me some good pasta (but really, who doesn't?). Sometimes I'll go the DR George route and just dump some jar of marinara sauce on some noodles, but more often I'll do a simple little something myself. Sometimes saute some mushrooms and garlic to top the pasta with a bit of olive oil. Maybe a little lemon dill butter sauce. I think tonight's dinner may be some spaghetti with my grandmother's homemade pesto sauce (I often include some shrimp with this, but I don't have any at the moment).

Wacky noodles don't sound that bad to me at all. Heck, I tried slog and chips with frosting, I'll give wacky noodles a try! (Note to self - get some more sour cream)

Charles Pogue - Never been to Cincinnati, but I have actually had a Cinci-style four-way before! Saw something about it somewhere, and made it... surprisingly good, I thought!

Milk - I go through phases with milk. I'll go for a few weeks without drinking a glass of it, then I'll go through the stuff like crazy for awhile. Always been a 1% guy, myself. Of course, chocolate milk is divine... Hershey's preferable, but Nestle Quik totally acceptable. While not a particular favorite, I don't mind an occasional bit of the strawberry stuff just for a change of pace. I don't know from Ovaltine.

I didn't pour in more milk. I liked that last bit of "sludge" at the bottom for a super concentrated jolt of choco-liciousness.

And about the GREEN Hershey's syrup. I bought a bottle of the Hulk movie tie-in green Hershey's chocolate syrup (it was on sale--I never saw the movie). I would eat a spoonful of it by itself and it tasted just like the regular chocolate syrup, except that it was a very dark green. If you mixed it with milk you got green milk, but it was more of a dark olive green, not the bright green like the bottle. One thing that I found out by eating the undiluted syrup is that the body processess the stuff as food, not a liquid. I thought that my pee would be green, but it wasn't...if you know what I mean! :o

Skim milk and Nestle CHOCOLATE Quik (or Nesquik as it is now known) got me through high school. I used to have that every morning while reading the paper and scoffing at my immature little sister who would be eating something baby-ish like porridge or Shreddies. :)

I hated any chocolate milks that had to be stirred from a syrup or a powder. There is a great low-fat chocolate milk out now that comes through different dairy distributors depending on what part of the country you're from...It's called CHUG. It's deeelicious! Unfortunately, LA has apparently lost its distributor (used to be Altadena). I can't find it anywhere in the area anymore.

I never shop on the day after Thanksgiving. I've gotten much more claustrophobic in my old age. I can't stand crowds...maybe I've just gotten more anti-social. Also the nice thing about being a writer, I can go on a Tuesday in the morning and other low traffic times. I never have to do the weekend shop thing.

But mostly, by Thanksgiving, my lovely wife, Julieanne, has done the bulk of the Christmas shopping (which she does all year round) and except for a few odds and ends, it's done. And thankfully the nieces and nephews have all gotten to the point where they just want a cheque. When they get married and start their own families, then I'm cutting them all off my list.

I get a tan tunic with all sorts of jewels adorning it, black tights and slippers, and tonight they may have my cape ready (either purple or maroon, can't remember). I must say, the just-above-knee-length tunic is the most comfortable costume I've had since Brigadoon... Who needs pants? Not me!!! :D

S. Woody To The Rescue!

I found this over at a part of the Sondheim.com site that hasn't crashed:

The Real A's Wacky Noodles

And while you're making Wacky Noodles, you can listen to The Manhattan Transfer's song, WACKY DUST! (of course it has a totally different connotation, but still it's Wacky):

WACKY DUST
By Stanley Adams & Oscar Levant

They call it wacky dust
It's from a hot cornet
It gives your feet a feeling so breezy
And oh, it's so easy to get

They call it wacky dust
It brings a dancing jag
And once it starts, then only a
Sap'll refuse to Big Apple or Shag

Oh I don't know just why
It gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon
You'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust

(Instrumental)

Oh we don't know just why
It gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon
You'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust

I just love this song! ;D

I love my milk plain, but when I was a kid I had to have Nestle's quick in it. I think it was because we had to drink, for awhile, that horrid powdered milk. OH, my gosh but that stuff was terrible. I really don't think it had any relation to actual milk.

PS: I also did not like the Nestle's strawberry flavor. Uhg! :-X

Milk - I love milk. Always have, always will. Used to be strictly a 1% girl, but I've trained myself to like skim if there are no other options. Chocolate milk is wonderful, of course. Always been fond of the Chocolate Malt Ovaltine flavor. We rarely had Hershey's or Nesquik around the house when I was a kid, so those I really can't say.

Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for a recital poster? I need one asap...

I love pasta. There, I've said it. I love it, love it, love it. Pretty much any kind, but I do especially love fettucine alfredo with grilled chicken and spaghetti with meatballs. Yum!

And thank you, everyone, for the congrats on the job. I found out that the bus ride will be 10 hours long, and I have to leave Port Authority at 3:45 am Sunday in order to be there in time. Bleh.

Hellooooo, fellow Dear Readers. Several of you IMed me to ask why I was paranoid. It is not important, so don't worry your heads off. I love you for asking though :). (If that doesn't make sense to any of you, I'm sorry, but it's a rather boring story. Just smile and nod.)

Pasta, pasta...I do not cook, you see, so I really haven't GOT a favorite recipe. I DO love MBarnums (Easy Mac is a Godsend!).

Ben and Matt H. and anyone else who responded: I hate drinking milk. Unless it's ICE cold, I feel like I'm drinking something contaminated. But I, for one, love strawberry milk. Its yummy :). However, Ron, I loath Ovaltine. The epitome of EW! for me.

BTW, Congrats on your God-like status, Matt!

BK, I love how the woman in the tub is in full makeup with her hair done. Since we all know bathing is such a glamorous affair and all.

Jennifer: When I was little, I thought Boxing Day was a day when all of the people in England brought out leftover toys and some presents to all of the homeless people who lived in boxes. It was such a touching holiday :).

I think that the recipe for Wacky Noodles sounds very good, although I can't say I'm excited about the sour cream. Unless it is completely masked by another taste, I can't eat it. Yuck!

I think that the best recipe for pasta is this: Get in your car. Drive to Virginia. Figure out how to get to Ashburn. Walk into the Ashburn Cafe. Order pasta. Sarah will bring it to you, and voila, a perfect meal. Why don't you try that sometime?

Good vibeage to Jose and his Richmond. I'm not sure if I know exactly what you're talking about, but if it IS what I THINK it is, I'm shooting vibes to you with my vibe-laser.

Also a very belated CONGRATULATIONS JASON!!! I can't believe I kept forgetting to say it yesterday, I even wrote it down in my "things to comment on" list that I make while reading the notes. That is tres, tres exciting for you!

Good vibeage as well to DR Jay on your job outcome!

Tonight, my little sister is trying out for a All-VA and MD indoor travel soccer team. She's VERY nervous and told me so, which is weird, as she's usually pretty fearless. So, as much as we loath little sisters, let's send her some good vibes. It's a pretty big deal. She's been watching Bend it Like Beckham for 2 weeks straight, memorizing the moves.

Today in History, we had to do a DBQ. DBQ's are like fast paced, timed essays where you're given 20 sources, and you have to write a 6 paragraph essay on a given topic in under 20 minutes, citing at least 11 of the 20 sources. But, of course, my teacher decided that it would be best to start 10 minutes before the bell rang. And it counts. Big time. I got to paragraph 4 and citation 7 when the bell rang. If she makes that a big grade, I'm going to throw myself a hissy fit; she is eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.

Best recipe ever: Take chili, Fritos, and grated American cheese. Get a bowl, do the bottom layer Fritos, middle layer chili, and top layer cheese. Use Frito's as "spoons". If chili is spicy, it tastes much better.

Off to do Algebra Homework *sigh*.

Ann: For my senior recital, I did a poster a la Playbill, like you would see on a show poster or title page of a showbill, listing all the composers, lyricists, myself, my voice teacher, my accompanists (yes, I had two), my guest vocalists, etc.

In graduate school, I made up all kinds of interesting posters just to get people's attention. I was kind of mean...I put up one poster that had HUGE letters spelling out AUDITIONS FOR LES MISERABLES! In the fine print I put, "well...not here, but somewhere! But since there's no audition, why not come to my recital...blah blah blah..." People looked at it! They were all disappointed that there was no audition, but they all agreed that they were the most clever recital posters they'd ever seen. :-D

Actually Swishy, Boxing Day is when we all throw on our yuletide gloves and hit one another senseless à la Mike Tyson. It's a very good way to rid oneself of Holiday stress. :)

Last year I tried to do the big Boxing Day Sales downtown where everything is supposed to be at least 50% and you have to start lining up outside of stores at dawn to fend off the crowds but I couldn't really find anything I wanted. I DID want to buy a new computer game since they can be so expensive the rest of the year, but when I got into FutureShop I discovered that they weren't on sale at all! I was shocked and appalled and, appropriately enough, felt like boxing with the store's employees.

Can you all tell I am procrastinating? I reaalllly don't want to start paper writing session #2 for the day on the Mad Mahdi.

DR Emily the malls are the place to be on Dec 26th. You don't have to wait outside. And there are sales in EVERY store.

this year I'll do Fairview with my West Island friends

I live so very close to that mall. Although I like Place Vertu for Boxing Day.

Btw, i'm seeing if I can do the double quotes manually.

I'm off now. Am I at 500 yet?

I do not drink milk of any kind!

I like DRJason's poster idea, too. Very clever. The only similar thing I ever did was a poster for a show done in the style of a tabloid cover like the Enquirer or Star magazine.....but you could do Life or People!

Another poster I did...(probably a violation of copyright law, but I didn't realize that then...)

I used the logo from the new YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN (Chuck and Snoopy in silouhette) and, using the PEANUTS font, I wrote something like, "Good Grief! Not ANOTHER recital..."

People liked that one, too. And then, to close out my recital, I did the Lippa arrangement of "Happiness" with ten of my good friends as the chorus. They each walked off the stage, one by one, and my best friend (the last to walk off) stopped halfway offstage, turned around, and with huge tears in her eyes said the "You're a good man, Charlie Brown" line and we both lost it, and so did my accompanist and page turner and nearly everyone in the audience. Recitals are VERY emotional--a huge sense of relief--but considering I did my recital only three hours after our graduation ceremony, I was on an emotional overload. My parents also made me take them to the OKC Bombing Memorial/Museum that morning. Talk about lumps in throats! Geez...

Well not really but it’s wash night–what do ya want? A 5 course meal? :)

And your point? Did you really expect her to take the first dress that came to hand?

I'm teasing you but you should have been around me when I thought I was going to go to NYC last year. I can't even begin to tell you how I hunted the right dresses, shoes, handbags, jewerly, coat, suitcase, etc, etc. It was my passion for weeks and then to have it all go down the tubes. I felt like an aborted shuttle launch and I never DID get the right shoes. Sigh. Such is life.

I remember Perry Mason and most of the detective shows because my Mom always watched them. I was/am more into Sci Fi/Fantasy . I’m afraid that The Night Stalker was the closest to a detective show that I remember enjoying.

Perry Mason was to easy–whoever he defended was innocent–I know he lost one case but it would have been a little more real if he had lost at least a few more. That would have kept you guessing.

Have a good one.

I would advise Jason not to announce in a public forum that he has a bootleg DVD. You never know where law enforcement agents may be lurking and lots of us creative types get testy about losing out on our royalties due to bootlegs. I won't be squealing on you, but really, this is not wise thing to brag too loudly about.

Jason actually that is really great advice.

I once posted about my copy of The Inaudible Jason Robert Brown (which has never been for sale commercially) on this here site.

If you type that into GOOGLE the only link you will get is to my statement of this July saying "Yea I have this cd" and my e-mail address.

I get about one request to buy the cd from complete strangers about once a month. Of course, I do not sell it and only make copies for people I know, but the hassle is there.

I am so afraid that JRB will Google himself and sue me or something. Oy. Oy. Oy. (in the words of Sandra)

For my homework tonight, I need to right a Shakespearian sonnet about someone I love or admire. It's not hard to write the actual sonnet, but it IS hard to figure out a person to write about.

I'm thinking I want to do someone I admire, so that at the beginning it can be how much I languish watching them be admirable, then after the turn, I can talk about how they enrich me. OR, I could write about someone I love and make it incredibly romantic and beautiful, overflowing with flowering language and poetry.

Sappy? Yes. Cheesy? Yes. Guaranteed to get me an A? Hell yes. She loves this stuff.

Every year that I can remember I'm at the stores at the crack of dawn on the day after Turkey day AND the day AFTER Christmas so take that! Ha! :)

In the case of the aborted shuttle disaster, it was that Friday and the next weekend and every weekend after that all the way to the day before it was announced DOTV was closing.

In fact, I had just bought my wool coat (that I was sure I was going to need) the day before the closing was announced. Non-fundable. I now have a coat I might wear once a year here in Florida.

Shopping is not for the weak or faint of heart. One must have the following:

1) Stamina

2) Courage under fire. To grab that whatever on the sales table before the woman beside you does and maintain custody of said item.

3) Good walking shoes

4) Strength to carry all those shopping bags.

5) Memory. One must always remember what one has in ones closet and/or other shopping bags because your next purchase should match at least one item. You must also be able to remember EXACTLY which shop you saw that what ever it is you walked away from and now have decided is a MUST have.

6) Oh and money. That does tend to help somewhat. Rich husband/boyfriend is, of course, optional.

I've got to hit some hay! Good night!

:) :) :)

I gaze up, toward the sky, to seek your face
My heart beating as though time is to end
The dazzling memory of love’s first trace
Is in my soul; upon it, I depend
The longing for your touch is much too strong
A hand, a heart, are joined in perfect bliss
Happiness is an enchanting song
That I myself could never bear to miss
Your melody is ringing through my dreams
A star dancing in moonlight is my guide
And though your fire glows bright and warm, it seems
Another is for you, you so confide
So with deep compassion, I start anew
Bidding my love, a sweet and deep adieu

First, good vibes to Sarah's sis, Jose's friend, and Jay:
[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]

Second, I love sonnets. I'll go back and reread Sarah's sonnet and probably analyze it, too. How I love Mrs. Buckley for being such an excellent AP English teacher!

Pasta recipes: Ok, so I'm Italian(-American)...and I don't cook (yet). I LOVE pasta and bread. MMM just thinking about it makes me hungry. Anyway, I'll eat almost any pasta, except I don't like ricotta cheese, so I refuse to eat lasagna or ravioli. I love gnocchi and almost anything else. Usually I eat pasta with my grandma's gravy (that's tomato sauce for all of you non-Italians :)) or with olive oil, fresh tomatoes, and fresh basil (and sometimes with zucchini). Zucchini is my favorite veggie, at least as of now. I can cook pasta if I want to (al dente, the best way), but I mostly leave that up to my mom.

Btw, I laughed so hard at MBarnum's recipe because that's like the only pasta I willingly make...except I follow the microwave instructions! One time during the summer, I was babysitting some girls who would only eat the mac and cheese if I boiled the water, and I had to boil two pots because right before I threw the pasta in the first bowl, I realized a spider had fallen in and died. I think I told the girls it was all because they made me boil the water and didn't let me take the shortcut.

Re Milk: I don't drink it. I take calcium supplements because I abhor it. Well, not quite abhor it, but I don't like it at all. Sometimes if I eat cereal, I use it. Occasionally, I'll drink it while eating oreos. I, however, rarely eat cereal or oreos. Oh, and sometimes I'll feel the need to drink chocolate milk, and I make sure I pour a whole lot of Hershey's syrup into my glass.

Also, congrats to Jason!
Jose--I loved the picture of your niece and nephew and the stories about your nephew, too!

I have gone shopping on "Black Friday" before, but it's not a regular thing that I do. I don't mind crowds, unlike my sister. She hates the idea of going to Disneyland (she didn't enjoy the couple of times that we've gone because of the crowds) but I can ignore the crowds unless someone talks to me...then I can pay attention.

When I go to the movies, I can usually tune out noisy people and concentrate on the movie, unless I'm with someone who also wants to talk. Then I have to pay attention to that person (those people) and I miss what happens in the movie. I don't like it when that happens.

Good evening.

What an amazingly lazy day. I ate. I shopped. I ate. I napped. I ate. I'm watching TV.

Alas, no baking. Hope I don't get whipped with a wet noodle - or other assorted pasta and macaroni product - when I step into the theatre tomorrow "empty-handed". ;)

Dinner tonight was very nice. Went to one of my favorite places - I'll be reeking of garlic for DAYS! I didn't have pasta, but I did have polenta accompanying some amazing lamb sausages and white beans - oh, and broccoletti too! Garlic, I tell you! And my dining companion was very nice too. Good conversation. Good manners. And Good looking to boot. :D Kind of caught me off guard. We've been playing phone tag and trading e-mails for the past few weeks, and we finally got to meet tonight. It was more a business-type meeting than anything else, but having a handsome man to look across the table at was a nice bonus. All in all, a very nice evening. He even picked up the tab! *And that was after I insisted I would buy dinner. And I even have a nice container of leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. :D

DR Laura II - You're welcome for the pics and the stories... He really is a "sweet, affectionate child" as Mrs. Lovett would say. And he regular tells me, "I Love You, Uncle Jojo." :D

And thanks to your DRs for your Richmond vibes... In short - and I don't mean to bring the board down - there was a murder yesterday here in Richmond (which might turn out to be a hate crime), and, thankfully, they made an arrest this afternoon. Let the healing begin.

And just what/who is a CGYOPP? I must have misssed that one...

OH - And the reviews for CAMELOT are starting to appear on the web... So far, so good... -Yes, I read reviews, good, bad, indifferent... Growing up "classically", the amount of criticism and hyper-criticism is astounding - and unfortunate. I developed a thick skin a long time ago.

Oh, and what a lovely number of posts to catch up on... It may seem like I'm lurking, but I'm actually reading.

I just love "Auntie Mame." Such a great movie! I laughed out loud on more than one ocassion, and I'm sure my neighbors must have thought I'm a total freak. Of course, they probably already think that from the hours they've had to endure listening to me sing showtunes...

Charles P.: You're totally right. Stupid of me to mention it, but just to clarify, it isn't a bootleg. It's a press reel, but I went ahead and removed my first posts about it. I appreciate the concern/warning. Just me not thinking...

Has anyone heard any recent news about the movie coming out with all the interviews of Broadway celebrities? I forget the name of it, but it seems like everyone was supposed to be in it. I kept hearing things about it and then all of a sudden--nothing. Just curious.

MBarnum: Your mail shall go out tomorrow. I promise. I swear it. I'm still having mail issues here at home. I don't know why, but I should have received at least two NetFlix movies and I haven't. I don't know if it's just running slow or if they're being delivered to the wrong address or what. A friend of mine gets his movies in 2 days. I have one that should have been here on the 17th and it STILL isn't here. What's that about?

Jennifer, did you notice how Rupert was "unavailable" to do the kicked off Survivor spot of Letterman tonight?

I think this confirms suspicions that the big guy is indeed going to take part in CELEBRITY SURVIVOR! Yippee! I can't wait to see him threaten Jenna from last season!

BTW we all love you Jennifer very much! :)

What is CYGOPP again? (I told you to keep writing what it stands for! :) )

I mean I know it's Andrea's friend. And I know he runs one of McGill's student governments. But for some reason I can never remember what those initials stand for (some type of guy, of some kind of importance? :) )

Jenn, it's "CERTAIN YOUNG GENTLEMAN OF POLITICAL POWER"

write it on a post it or something and stick it to the side of your computer monitor :)

May I wish you
A bright and Beautiful Thanksgiving Day?
May the morning
Fill your day with delight,
this beautiful day!
May the laughter
Of a host of happy children
Echo in your ear!
May the music of their voices
Warm you all the year!

Aren't you glad you're alive
This glorious Thanksgiving Day?
Weren't you glad
To see the morning arrive
This glorious day?
Did you notice
That the winter sky was smiling
As you left your bed?
And the winter sun was shining
High above your head?

All the things we take for granted
Every day we live
Today we can acknowledge
With the thanks we give!

So let's give thanks
For the joy of living
On Thnaksgiving Day!
Gather 'round

And give your thanks
With the joy of giving
Today!
And remember
When you watch each winter sunset
Why our thanks are due!-
We give Thanksgiving thanks
For a world that's always new!

Not a holiday that is celebrated here in Oz but I wondered how many DRs were familiar with this song and its source

Hello fellow dear readers. I have been busy all day, but we got a lot done: probate court and banking. Then a 2.5 hour church meeting.

Laura's tip for the day: Write up a will.

Pasta: I like to saute onions, garlic, mushrooms in olive oil. Then toss the pasta with the vegetable mixture, add some fresh grated parmesan cheese and freshly ground pepper.

Poor Sandra. She has a group project due tomorrow (the one about the poem). Her partner has never answered her emails, so who knows what will happen.

Sandra has a partner? Do tell. Yummiliscious-sounding recipe, Laura - we knew you could do it. I may have to try that one on Friday

Good night, all.

I can see I'm putting folks to sleep even as they sit staring at their screens!

Nah, I'm not seriously chastising myself. We need something exciting to talk about and we're all too pooped to pep up.

G'Night........................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zz

Jason, "Auntie Mame" is one of my favorite movies! If your neighbors can't appreciate the movie or that YOU enjoyed it, tell them to "KISS MY ASS"!

Also, the documentary is called “Broadway: The Golden Age” and it's by Rick McKay. Click here (http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm?int_news_id=2591) for an article about the documentary and CLICK HERE (http://www.broadwaythemovie.com/) for the link to the website. They have information on a lot of people who have taken part (including people who are no longer living) as well as trailers.

You see, you see? We put Ron Pulliam to sleep in the Pullman compartment. It doesn't have to BE this way, really it doesn't. We could all be posting until the cows come home. Damn them, damn them all to hell. I'm going to take a nice hot shower and then I shall return, feeling like a wet fettucine.

When your darling little nephew says, "I love you, Uncle JoJo," does he pronounce your name as "JoeJoe" or "HoHo?"

Recital posters... they used to be a specialty of mine, as you know, Ann. But I don't think "Sondheim and Gomorrah: Songs about sex, jealousy, revenge, and cannibalism" really applies to yours. :D

And speaking of Bernadette Peters (well, the picture of her) and Jason Robert Brown...last week I ordered Bernadette's Gypsy CD from amazon.com and one of the "if you like that, you might also like this" links was the songbook (vocal selections) to JRB's The Last Five Years. It was $12.57--30% off! I'd never thought to look for songbooks on amazon.com and I've otherwise never seen songbooks for any less than the list price, which for this is $17.95. Another link from that title was for the songbook to Songs For a New World also 30% off! I had to get both songbooks and they all just arrived today! It's like an early Christmas (even if I had to pay for them myself)! ;D

LOL! Thank you, TCB. You damn near caused Dr. Pepper to shoot out my nose. :D

And, FYI, there are about 60,000 people in the Wenatchee/East Wenatchee area, actually making us the 4th largest population center in Eastern WA (not that that's saying a whole hell of a lot).

Good news, good news! Der Brucer is home again! He drove up in a like-new used car his son-in-law located at about 11:30 tonight, and the dogs are just now settling down, they've been so happy to see him.

First thing we do tomorrow is head over to the grocery store and buy some scrapple!
