More drama at DEATH BY CHOCOLATE. At around 7:35 I noticed that the preshow lights onstage were blinking... After some consultation, and frenzy, we decided that something had gone wrong with one of the three dimmer paks. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Sold out house....technical problems. The team was working - I went down, gave the cast a short pep talk and a small warning....
Then of course there was the problem with duplicate tickets and two people already sitting where others had tickets.... As Alphonso would say: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattt?
So I gave my curtain speech while work continued and told the audience what was going on and that we might not have full lighting for the beginning of the show. They seemed to take the news well....after all, what could they do?
First act, about half lighting and only lights or BLACKOUT.... Intermission...pak repaired by resourceful tech person....second act all lights working....happy audience, happy cast & crew, happy Jack.
Fingers crossed for tonight.

Yes, I did run into DR TPunk as I was waiting in to go see "Strangers With Candy". Thankfully, I had a much more enjoyable movie-going experience than DR TPunk did. Yes, there were some truly sick moments, but in a good sense. I found myself - and everyone else in the theatre - laughing out loud consistently. Amy Sedaris can just be sooooooo wrong some times. And I like that!

After the movie, James and I walked around Chelsea for a bit. And I mean around. Down 8th Ave... Across 14th... Up 7th... Down 6th... Back across 14th to 8th... I was just in a walking mood/mode.
And while walking around, I happened to run into one of my brother Michael's Coast Guard Academy classmates. It was very cool seeing him - we hadn't seen each other in a couple of years. He was living in NYC after he finished his obligation with the Coast Guard, then moved away for a bit, and moved back a few months ago. Truly a small world.
Eventually, James and I settled into Helen's for a drink and some piano bar entertainment. Fun. -Although, one guy got gutsy and decided to go for the high note at the end of "You'll Never Walk Alone"... OUCH! -Even he admitted that he probably should not have done that after he sang. Especially at 2:00 in the morning.
Then we walked up to Times Square where they had most of it blocked off for the filming of "Enchanted" (starring Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, etc.). It was kind of cool seeing just how they shut down the streets. Alas, it looked liked all the production assistants were hoping that the crowd in Times Square at 3:00am was still not so lively and numerous. There really were a lot of people out tonight. And, of course, they all stopped on the sidewalks to get a look at the filming. I believe we spotted Susan Sarandon in some super-hero looking costume. It was purple and shiny.

And now, I'm back at the apartment, and I believe I'm just going to stay up. The sun is already starting to lighten up the sky a bit, and since I just took a shower, I'm more or less wide awake. It's been a while since I've done and all-nighter, and I figure what the heck.

Catching up from yesterday...
DR Matthew - As for Dear Edwina, Jr.... The original piece, Dear Edwina (Sr.) came first. It was written as a children's show to be performed by a group of 8-10 adults. Dear Edwina. Jr. came along after MTI started getting their whole Broadway Jr. department going.
The scripts for the two versions are very similar, but Zina has done some alterations here and there. They may seem small on first read, but they're actually quite "smart", and do help the actors get the point across in their respective versions.
Musically, the music is more or less the same, with the Jr. version having some A-sections cut here and there. However, the original version also has a different Opening Number which is quite a hoot. It's a take-off/tribute to a classic opening number from a classic Broadway hit. "Paw Paw Michigan" was written for the Jr. version since the original opening is a bit rhythmically complex, and not exactly elementary-school-music-student-friendly.
We shall be performing the original version, Dear Edwina.

DR Jose, Zina and Marcy are friends of Susan Egan. They perform in concert occasionally, and I think there might be a lovely Kritzerland recording of their wonderful songs with the three of them, but that's for my dear friend BK to decide.

No, I don't think many of them had my home number - just a couple, but I don't know that I'd remember who? It could be anyone in the department, frankly, but someone who knew some of what went on in the class. It certainly didn't SOUND like anyone who was actually IN the class, but it could have been a put-up job by one of the two disgruntled students who I was a little tough on during the staged reading.

Feeling much stronger this morning, so I did my Friday workout this morning. (I have a modified workout I usually do on Saturdays and now that will slop over to Sunday.)
I appreciate the good wishes from DRs DakotaCelt, Vixmom, and others. Really, my little problem was minor in comparison to ailments others are enduring, but I appreciate the good thoughts just the same.

The lecture class covered false confessions, interrogation techniques, and cult mentalites. We also watched a made for tv movie about a case he had worked on when he was out one week testifying on another case.

Hmm, not sure I've seen that movie. With all the knowledge you have, I'd love to have you on a jury! It's amazing what the police can do with their interrogation techniques and the things that people will confess to that they didn't do. I find it extremely fascinating

And speaking of confessions....I am finally reading the Kritzer trilogy. I've had them for a very long time, but hadn't read them yet. I'm nearly done with Benjamin Kritzer and am finding it most enjoyable. The section I read last night made me very hungry for a vanilla custard ice cream cone. Luckily we have a Culver's that serves custard cones. Not as good as I remember from growing up, but good nonetheless.

(He has places he could stay and has a window air conditioner he could put in his room. He's just being stubborn, so I don't feel sorry for him) - He wants to see Nacho Libre. TEHRAN, Iran — President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Friday that Israel could not harm Iran, even as the Jewish state expanded its offensive into Lebanon to target the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
"Despite the barbaric and criminal nature of the occupiers of Jerusalem, the regime and its Western supporters do not even have the power to give Iran a nasty look," the agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in Osku, in northwestern Iran.
Well, I bet a couple of well-placed Israeli nukes would change his mind!

I just got home from vacation yesterday and what was waiting for me, but my copy of DECEIT !
I watched the DVD this morning followed by the commentary track.
I enjoyed them both very much. You did an excellent job in all three of your roles; writer, director and actor. No one would ever had guessed it have been 21 years since your last appearance on stage.
Now I know why Miss Stephanie went back to see the show again and again! It's just that good of a play. :)
I've heard some people say they though it was kind of creepy, or at least Michael was creepy but I didn't find that at all. I found him cocky and overly self assured of his position in the situation and quite methodical in going about his business but never creepy.
I liked the multi dementions of Jeffery's personality as well. I'd like to be able to say something more about him, but I don't want to spoil it for those who have not seen it.
For the entire play, nothing is what it appears to be and yet the story never loses the audience in what is going on when a twist of the truth comes out.
I didn't think the infamous scene was overly gory. It told the story and served the play, but didn't go over board for unnecessary shock value. Nice job at maintaining that balance.
I was pleased that while it had heavy drama at times it also had light comical moments as well. Not to mention some very sharp and witty dialogue.
My favorite line was from Michael.
Paraphrasing here, "We lived together and I hated her; just like being married."
For some reason I just laughed out loud at that line. LOL
I'm glad the commentary explained the reasoning for the placement of Matts hands at various times concerning Tammy. I had noticed that while watching the play and was beginning to think he was just a Dirty Not So Old Man. haha.
(now if that intriqued anyone enough to know what I'm talking about, you're just going to have to buy the dvd to find out!) ;)

Another newbie checking in...Sarah (Dakota Celt) pointed me in the right direction.
Okay, so I finally found a few consecutive minutes this week to actually sit and watch 'Deceit.' What can I say beyond: WOW.
My first reaction upon opening the dvd was what a professional job had been done putting it all together. I mean, I was really impressed by that. It looked like it belonged on the Blockbuster shelf along with so many other major productions! I have dvds gathering dust on my shelf that are not nearly as impressive.
As far as the actual show, I was also pleasantly surprised. I thought the lighting, sound and makeup were all quite good. The staging was effective, and the music was chillingly appropriate, although if I let it run too long at the beginning, I'm convinced I could be led to murder, myself...
I must confess that I have always preferred Matt as Jack Deveraux, so this was a real departure for me, for sure. This character was positively creepy in comparison, but still Matt brought a charm to Michael that could not be denied. Having followed the reviews, columns, etc. since the play opened, I was pleasantly impressed that the faux accent I was expecting really did come across as a slight 'lilt' as Bruce Kimmel wanted it to be. Maybe that took some doing, but for this performance, it was right on. I also enjoyed on the commentary when Matt gave his spin on that--that the character was a bit ostentatious in nature. Made perfect sense.
I pretty much 'got' Tammy's performance on my own, but it was good to listen to the commentary and understand it that much more clearly. I would have been intrigued to have seen 'the other actor' in the role, for all we heard along the way (and for comparison purposes), but Bruce made the role his own, and the dynamics between the characters really worked.
The play itself was captivating! Thrillers are not my usual genre, but I admit to LOVING old Hitchcock films, and this hearkened back to the likes of those. I didn't find the twists and turns to be as much of a shock. Maybe I was expecting them a bit too much, having heard things along the way, but it was still a great story.
I enjoyed the fact that there was a nice mix of horror and humor, something I don't suppose is all that easy to achieve. One minute I was riveted watching Michael's cool and deliberate clean up, and then just minutes later, his quips had me laughing out loud.
I was pleased that I figured out who Anthony Cooper was, although I confess I didn't have the time to get the significance of that name until it was already being explained. I found that clever (love anagrams). I appreciated the snappy dialogue and the use of some rather impressive verbage along the way--something that always intrigues me.
I thought (predictably, for a Matt fan) that Matt stole the show. His showmanship is remarkable, but I thought that Tammy carried her part quite nicely and Bruce did a fine job, as well.
For any who have not yet watched it yet, I would definitely suggest to put it on the required summer viewing list! And for an East Coast Jersey girl who would never have had the chance to come SEE the play, having it available on dvd was a wonderful treat! Many thanks to Bruce and the crew for making this possible!

Cil, although I auditioned at the Guthrie, I was never lucky enough to work there. I do have a friend who has been part of the company for years. I do know the Guthrie very well. When we get back for a visit to Minnesota I do plan on checking out the new complex. It's in a great location right on the Mississippi River and the building looks very cool.

It is so hot outside here that it's hard to breathe. When I went out to get the mail, I couldn't get inside fast enough.

Had some telephone calls today that cut into viewing time, but I did have time to watch a couple of things.
I started off with the 1939 HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES. Since I've seen it so often, I played the commentary track with it this time. Very informative (the commentator had read the original screenplay and noted cuts and additions to the script) and enjoyable as these things go.

Then I watched the first episode from Season 5 of CSI. Four different cases going on so lots to keep track of. The case NIck and Sarah worked on - the "alien" found in the desert wearing an E.T. wristwatch was the most intriguing case to me.

I got TOO MANY GIRLS in the mail today from my Ebay win, so I'll watch that tonight. Later, I plan to watch THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

I may put TOO MANY GIRLS on hold until tomorrow. I noticed that the DVR is now recording GRAND PRIX, so I may watch that now and follow it with THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

Cil, although I auditioned at the Guthrie, I was never lucky enough to work there. I do have a friend who has been part of the company for years. I do know the Guthrie very well. When we get back for a visit to Minnesota I do plan on checking out the new complex. It's in a great location right on the Mississippi River and the building looks very cool.

We used to take field trips there when I was in high school. I saw Hamlet and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I haven't really been there since. I think it may be time to head up there this fall.
Were you ever in anything at Chanhassen? That's the other place we used to go on theater field trips.

No, I don't think many of them had my home number - just a couple, but I don't know that I'd remember who? It could be anyone in the department, frankly, but someone who knew some of what went on in the class. It certainly didn't SOUND like anyone who was actually IN the class, but it could have been a put-up job by one of the two disgruntled students who I was a little tough on during the staged reading.
Gee, two students were disgruntled because you were tough on them during the staged reading? I certainly hope those two aren't planning to continue acting.

Their web site says they now have 202 locations. They are in over half of the States, all of Canada, AND Puerto Rico. I love thier Mondo Burritos!

For some reason I thought today's show ended at six, but was happy to find it ended at five. So, I got to come home briefly although I must soon be on my way to LACC to work on the sound and lighting.
Today's show was interesting on many levels. It seemed like there were less of the megawatt celebs or even half megawatt celebs - and Miss Debbie Reynolds and The Mick (Rooney) didn't even arrive until after one. So, for the first three or four hours I had the best show ever - sold a surprising number of books (the Kritzers, and Writer's Block were the ones that went), a fair number of DVDs, even a Guy Haines CD or two, and, most surprisingly, a bunch of photos. Who knew? I made a nice chunk of change today and that was icing on the cake, because I also met some terrific folks. Seated directly across from me was Alan Young and Erin Moran. Erin and I made faces at each other all day - fun. On my right was our very own Mr. Kevin Spirtas (who did REALLY well). I spoke to Stella Stevens, Linda Blair and a few other kindred spirits including Richard Herd, Chuck McCann. All in all, the most enjoyable one of these I've done. Hoping tomorrow is fun, too.

Also got roped into doing a ten minute chat with a screenwriting seminar that an acquaintance was doing in another room at the hotel. I enjoyed that, too, and was my usual self - telling them to write what they believed in and to write it the way they wanted to and not to any Syd Field formula - let others worry about that crap. Got some nice laughs because I'm quite self depracating.

I think my attitude has now been adjusted. I was very angry about some things at work until I realized today that they are the natural consequences of me getting what I said I wanted...lol.. be careful what you want my dear or you will surely get it. So I'm going to just get used to working weekends and evenings again and stop complaining.

LOL, Phoenix was a lot hotter than the dry 97 degrees we had here today. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really don't mind the heat without the humidity

Only had time to watch two LONG movies tonight.
First up was GRAND PRIX, recorded off TCM. I'm sure the Dolby Digital 5.1 track on the new DVD set is more impressive than the Dolby Surround track used on the TCM broadcast, and because the DVD is an enhanced transfer, naturally, it's going to be even sharper than the very sharp image shown over TCM.
But what I saw was certainly enough to satisfy my curiosity about the film after not seeing it for so many years. Great racing footage and really silly dramatic sequences. I am SO not an Yves Montand fan; he seems to spoil for me most every English film in which he appears. And dubbing Mifune with Paul Frees speaking some kind of accented, broken English was pretty ludicrous, too.

The nest is about 15 feet above ground in a cavity in the top of the saguaro cactus. We can't get it back up there.

And then I spent the next two hours with the Superbit edition of THE FIFTH ELEMENT. I haven't seen this film since I saw it and was underwhelmed in the theater. Seems to have developed a cult of its own during the last 8 years or so.
Anyway, I keep noticing that after all these years, many calibrators and reviewers in my home theater magazines still often use the Superbit edition to test drive the newest HDTVs. So, I found a used copy of the film in its Superbit edition and played it tonight.
I have to admit, the video is awesome to behold on this edition, especially using my upconversion DVD player. And the DTS sound is still state of the art, at least on my system. It was very impressive.
And the movie was more fun the second time around, too, since I knew it was a cartoonish action picture. Chris Tucker still irritated the devil out of me.

So tomorrow, I'll watch DANCING LADY and TOO MANY GIRLS on DVD. And I may break out Joan Crawford's A WOMAN'S FACE on laserdisc to watch. I haven't seen it in a long, long time.

For some reason TCM canceled the showing of TWO SISTERS FROM BOSTON and is showing other June Allyson pics tomorrow, I'm assuming movies where she plays more of a leading role: LITTLE WOMEN, GOOD NEWS, TOO YOUNG TO KISS. I guess this is to honor her passing. They're also reshowing her Private Screenings interview with RObert Osborne tomorrow.

Does yours have a punch card where, for every burrito, you get a punch (on the card...not in the face ;)) and when you get 10 punches, you get a free burrito? But on Mondays, they give double punches (on the card) and then you only need to go five times to get a free burrito. Free is good. ;D

The burritos also freeze well. When I want to freeze one, I get it without sour cream and guacamole (but then I never get guacamole = :P ) and no lettuce. When I get it home, I take off the foil and rewrap it in wax paper (I'm sure plastic wrap would do) and then freeze it. I've only cooked it in my toaster oven (remove wrap and heat for 20 minutes or so at 350° I think...but watch it carefully) but it should be good in the microwave, also. :)

Well, my mom was here to help clean my house and we got the kitchen and my dining area cleaned (my mom cleaned the kitchen and I did the dining area), but still probably only a quarter of the house is done. I still need to do the living room, the extra bedroom and my bedroom. That will be the worst...but I MUST do it alone (almost a Chicago reference).
It'll be a process, but if I don't attempt to do it all at once, I think it'll be manageable...I hope. ::)

Tomorrow, I'm going to a very informal (aren't they all ;)) pot-luck dinner at a friend's house. I'm bringing little smokies in a sauce made of two parts red current jelly and one part mustard. Several people I know have made a similar sauce with grape jelly, but I learned it with current jelly. Either way, it's quite good. :D

Yesterday in the mail, I received the "world premiere cast recording to the musical Just So (http://www.footlight.com/product.cfm?product_id=35678) with John Barrowman! I'm going to listen to it right now! The music and lyrics are by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who, between the two of them, wrote Moll Flanders, Honk! and The 3 Musketeers. I love all three of these shows (based only on the recordings, of course), so I'm sure I'll love this. ;D

Speaking of Just So, I have the original 1990 compilation CD of "Hey, Mr. Producer!" that has several tracks specially recorded for that release. One of them is "There's No Harm In Asking," recorded by Anthony Barclay and the late Martin Smith, both of who were in the original London cast recording of Children of Eden.

I'm more than half way through Just So and I'm really enjoying it (which is always a good thing). I just read through the cast list and Anthony Drewe (book writer and lyricist) recorded a role. It turns out that they recorded the show initially in October 2004, but Mary Poppins was still being worked on and had to be set aside. Before they were able to fully mix and edit the recording, they decided to change the opening number from the one that was recorded to the one that was originally written, the title song called "Just So." The problem was that when they finally wanted to record the title number in late 2005, most of the cast weren't available. And that's why they got John Barrowman and Anthony Drewe.
Also there are a few small pictures from a production of the show at the North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts in 2001. Barrett Foa and Francis Jue were in that show.
