THE TIME THAT GOT AWAY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes got away, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - like the time, they got away, too.

Well.....we loved the variety shows.....so I will name some of the ones that might not be so popular with the populace....in addition to the usual, I enjoyed:

Tennessee Ernie Ford
Hullabaloo

I guess my favorite was The Ed Sullivan Show.....because he had it all from Soup to Nuts.

DR Jane: Loved your photos as well. Unfortunately I'm usually in bed this side of the Atlantic when most of your posts appear so don't have the chance to comment on them at the time :)

It was on The Ed Sullivan Show that I first saw Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, some real ballet dancers, some Broadway show stoppers, AND Jayne Mansfield playing the violin.

I used to enjoy seeing many of the imported shows which were on BBC TV such as Andy Williams, the Bob Hope specials, Danny Kaye, and Perry Como.

Just received the Blu of SPELLBOUND. It's in one of those flimsy eco packages which I hate. As usual, I've put the disc in one of my standard Blu boxes which I keep for that purpose. The eco box is in the trash (well, recycling bin actually).

The variety shows and specials on NBC were always the best because you never knew who might show up unannounced.

Good morning, all! The alarm went ff at 6:30, but I was too wrapped up in dreams of Patti Lupone snging in the middle of 79th Street and Broadway and helping Drew Narrymore on a photo shoot. I am not making this up and I have no idea in what part of my subcnscious these things get shaken loose. So, at 7:45 I decided genug ist genug and got out of bed. Since then, I've bathed, dressed, fixed a paragraph of the notes on Disc 3, and had my first cup of coffee.

Today, I'll do fixes to my notes  from my phone conversation with the Man from Philadelphia, make a run to the NYPL around noon in search of the play The Merry Wives of Gotham, work some more, and then go down to City Center for the dress of Merrily We Roll Along, one of my least favorite Sondheim shows. I'm sure the cast will be good, and it will be nice to see Joshie and Rob Berman.

More coffee.

Tuesday morning greetings!  I'll be E & T again most of today because the grantwriters are meeting at lunchtime and my second knitting class starts this evening.  In this class, we're making a Reader's Wrap:

I watched it two weeks ago online. I liked it, and posted my comments at the time.

*Of course, now that the pilot has been officially broadcast, a bunch of "critics" are coming out and saying that the show is not a true representation of how a Broadway show comes together. Well... Of course, it's not.  It's a TV show. There is so much waiting and tedium involved in the process and you really can't show that in "real time" and expect it to be entertaining and attract viewers. Although, it would be funny to see one hour devoted to a chorus call where you just watch audition after audition after audition. Or just waiting area outside the audition room.  ::)

As for the Topic of the Day...

"The Donny and Marie Show"
"The Mandrell Sisters"
"Pink Lady & Jeff"
And I can still picture moments from Tony Orlando and Dawn's show.

I've always wondered about the change from "crumpet" to "parsley". -Or is that vice versa?

Okay, I'm a day late in posting, but Mark and I attended Kritzerland show #18, and it was wonderful of course. Bruce helped us get a better table right up front, which we soooo appreciate! Anyway, Mark and I love Michelle Nicastro's CDs, so it's really great to hear those songs life. The Dressing Song is one of our favorites, and Melody Hollis did it splendidly. Again, how does she learn all those words?! And how does she sing them so fast? What an amazing brain she has. Anyway, other highlights of the show included hearing how Bruce and Alet Taylor first met, getting to hear Bruce sing once again, and hearing Mr. Sherman sing a lost song from Mary Poppins. It was a delightful little song called "Chimpanzoo", but there was no mic stand attached to the piano, so the accompaniest had to lean over and hold the mic for him. Mr. Sherman's comment was something like, "this is the nicest mic stand I've ever used." Very funny. Also, always charming is the way Bruce can never figure out how to say Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitellos. He always mixes up the order of the words which gets some giggles, but we forgive him because "he's old". The only disappointment was that our waiter never told us what the specials were. I knew nothing of the pasta with chicken and pink sauce until Bruce told us about it. Now I know to always ask what the specials are. Live and learn.
