Well, you've read the notes, the notes had comedy and errors, and now it is time for you to post until the comedy cows come home.

TOD
I think it would have to be Kronborg: 1582. I first heard it on CBC radio and then it toured as a stage productions. The only thing I remember is that is was a rock n roll version. I used to have a studio recording of it. The composer was Cliff Jones.
It eventually made its way in a differently stage production to Broadway as Rockabye Hamlet
And oh yes there is a six degrees of separation story attached to it.
Flash forward a few years later. I made my tv debut on "Julie" a half hour music comedy series. She sang a song to me I Love You Because Your Trash. The song was written by Cliff Jones

JRand, my condolences on the passing of your Aunt Mildred.

Today is Saint Patrick's Day but I'm wearing a red turtleneck and brown pants and brown shoes.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of Anya.

Good morning, all! I will soon be out the door and on my way to Toyland. I have no idea of how long I will be down there this morning since I have to wait for an Office Depot delivery. I'm taking some Babes In Toyland libretto work and Mr Raines' concert work with me.
Tonight, I've been invited to a bash for my friends Tom Mizer and Curtis Moore to celebrate their Jonathan Larson award.
I wish I could say that I saw ROCKABYE HAMLET, but - alas - I did not. I cannot claim to have seen a bizarre Shakespearean production. I was almost in a terrible Nadir Production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM playing Flute, but it ended up cancelled, thank you, Jesus!

Yes, indeed - condolences to DR JRand58 on the loss of his Aunt Mildred.
And to DR Edisaurus on the loss of her uncle.
Thanks, DR Singdaw. I don't know what my mom will do without him. They would IM each other at all hours of the night and he could make her laugh in ways no one else could.
It's been a really tough month. I'm not sure I will last on this "film". It's really a shame, because I feel like I've been waiting to work on this film my whole life and everything I've done so far has led up to this. But it's not going to be that film, and that is heartbreaking. So I am in mourning in 2 ways.
If I don't last on that, at least I will be able to visit HHW daily instead of 14 hour days with people breathing down my neck. Speaking of...

I am distressed to hear that the news media in Florida will not help poor DR Danise

~~~ ACCIDENT RECOVERY VIBES FOR THE GOLDSTEIN FAMILY~~~~~
And Erin Go Bragh to you, Vixmom! Congratulations on feeling well enough to go back to work!
My family (the Bulls) immigrated from Ireland so I wish them all a happy paddy's day, too. My Uncle Bob had 3 girls, so he was the last of the Bulls.
It was always fun, when you are asked the security question, "What is your mother's maiden name"? "Bull!"
"No, really, I have to have it". I guess I should have worked up some variation on "Who's On First".
Elmore - the Girl Scout cookies were delivered to us on Sunday and they were mailed out to you Sunday night - hopefully you will receive them today!
Yesterday I was scheduled to work until 1 PM but ended up staying until 2:30 to help prepare clsoing documents for an afternoon closing
I was home by 2:45 and had some lunch (Chef Boyardee Ravioli) I know it's not real food but it is very soft and easy to swallow and it satisfied the craving I had for ravioli and it was on sale in the supermarket for only 99 cents a can
-
Then the Vixter got home from school and we chatted a little about our days - we watched the Ellen Degeneres show which ended at 4 PM - Deal or No Deal started and the next thing I knew I was waking up in a darkened living room - with a quilt over me and it was nearly 8 PM !
The Vixter said it was like someone switched me off I fell asleep so quickly so she covered me up , turned off the lights and TV and left me to rest!
I guess the day took more out of mee than I realized - but I was so happy to be back being uselful and everyone was so nice and happy to have me back.
-
Speaking of which - I had better get ready for work
-
BK - the notes just keep getting better and better I really enjoy hearing all these stories!
-
Have a nice day everyone - if I am not back later I am probably snoring on the couch!
-
Dear Amy, so sorry to hear about the troubles on the film and of your uncle's passing. We are thinking of you here in Manhattan (and Wisconsin).
-
Condolences to dear JR on the passing of his aunt.
VixMom, glad to hear that the first day back went well.
There are days I want to just lay/lie/loo/lee/lah down after work and sleep until 8pm or later.
I don't know that I've ever seen any "wild" or "weird" Shakespeares. I've seen many Shakespeare productions, good and bad. He is one of my favorites. I do wish I had seen Rockabye Hamlet just to say I was there.
-
Hugs and condolences to Amy
-
Jrand, condolences on the loss of your aunt
-
I saw Rockabye Hamlet. Dear friend Bill Parry was in it, but that was many years before I knew him as a Dear friend.
I saw the naked Macbeth in Washingotn D.C. a year or two back, and it was indeed naked.
I am not yet caught up on HHW, and today promises to be another busy tax day. Then I go to Florida from Wednesday through Friday for some family time, which was approved by the tax office with a tacit understanding that i put in as much tax-work time as possible before and after the trip.
-
I recently saw a musical based on "Twelfth Night" using Elvis songs. Apparently I have blocked the name of said show. Does that count?
-
I'm glad you had a good day back at work, Vixmom.
-
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle, Edisaurus. I know it will be hard on your mom.
And I'm sorry to hear the film isn't turning out to be the experience you had hoped for.
-
My condolences to DRs Jrand and Edisaurus on the passing of his Aunt Mildred and her Uncle Bob.
DR vixmom - glad that your first day back at work was a success. Please pace yourself. You will regain all of your previous vim and vigour, but it doesn't come back instantly!
-
DR Edisaurus - I am so very sorry to hear about the disappointment on the professional side of things. You are so talented, and it's just a shame that that talent can't be harnessed in a creative and fulfulling way. :(
TOD:
The most whacked out Shakepearean affair I ever came across had to be a completely misguided HAMLET at Temple Drama School that was done as commedia dell'arte. The concept made no sense at all. The action was played as straightforward drama with everyone dressed in outlandish costumes and masks and wildly gesturing with each line. The director thought he was making a further statement by having the actors in the players scene dressed normally without masks. I remember really feeling sorry for the cast members having to deal with this idiocy.
Condolences to Edisaurus on the passing of her favorite Uncle.
Good morning, and happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone.
More TOD:
WHile a theater student in college, our department was saddled for two years in a row with a woman who loved to do high-concept Shakespeare. The first was actually not a bad idea--A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT DREAM set among the 1930's swanky cocktail set, with the forrest action taking place uptown in Harlem. I got to play Bottom who, along with the other mechanicals, were sort of Dead End Kids types. It would have been a cute production, except that most of the cast members who the director recruited to play the faeries really had no idea of what 30's Harlem was all about. Only Puck and Titania understood the concept. The best the director maanged to do was to get them to "vogue" throughout the evening. But in the end, the audiences seemed to like it.
The following year was a disaster--JULIUS CAESAR set on Wall Street. Again, a cute idea but the director didn't know where to stop. She changed the text of the play to suit the time and place (along with tearing out whole scenes on a whim during our first read through, only to re-instate them later in the rehearsal period when she realized that the plot no longer made any sense.) In the end, the show looked more like a high school production of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING instead of JULIUS CAESAR. Audiences pretended to like it.
-
That blasted Steve Suskin book is cramping my sleeping time! I am finding it quite difficult to put it down to accomplish anything.
I was going to order it from Amazon until I read "Usually ships within 1 to 3 months"!!!
I didn't realize it was such a popular subject!
-
TOD:
I've written about it here before, but it was a production of The Scottish Play at the Stratford [CT] Shakespeare Festival that I saw when I was in middle school. The set was one gigantic sheet, that, with hidden wires and whatnot, was manipulated to create all the settings of the play.
-
DR edisaurus - My condolences to you and your family. It really does sound like your Uncle Bob was much loved.
Tuesday morning greetings! I'm about to go help with some last-minute book sale preparations.
Condolences to DRs Edi and JRand on their recent losses.
I had a "could it be?" moment when I read of the passing of Jack's Aunt Mildred because this past weekend I also lost an elderly relative named Mildred who grew up and spent much of her adult life in the western Indianapolis vicinity. She and her family moved to Georgia some years ago, though, and the obit link that Jack posted confirmed that they are 2 different people. My relative was not really an aunt, but my mother's cousin. My sister and I always called her "Aunt Mim," though.
I'm up; I've vacuumed. Now is the time for my three mile walk.
The California Endowment! That's the title of my next... well, I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes, whatever it is!
That blasted Steve Suskin book is cramping my sleeping time! I am finding it quite difficult to put it down to accomplish anything.
After watching it sit in a pile for about a year or so, I finally started reading Blair Tindall's "Mozart in the Jungle". I read almost half of it last night before finally making myself go to bed around 1:30am. I had heard about all the "sex and drugs" in the book, but I'm also finding the history of Arts funding in the US quite fascinating too.
re: library systems being online.
I agree that it's better if you can do everything online. Our library was supposed to switch over in september. but there was some problem that shut down the whole system. It's still not up, so i guess it was a big problem.
DR Jane, that is crazy that one book has 24 holds. isn't the library just for your town? Even the most popular books here would never have more than 10-15 people on the list. And that would only be if it just came out.
Each little suburb here has its own library. So maybe your town has more people.
RE: DWTS
I'm still not sure who i'll cheer for.
I think that the best dancer is definitely melissa. And Gilles very close behind.
I do think shawn is the next best. But i don't get why she is not as popular as i thought she would be.
I really hope steve O is okay. I really liked him and lacey.
I think denise was most improved. I thought she did very well last night.
And i don't know why but i love steve wozniak. Maybe it's from watching him on my Life on the D List. But i think he is doing the best that he could do. And what more can we ask. I just love how hard he is trying and he is doing much better than i thought.
I really don't care for belinda or david alan grier. Ty (jewel's husband) did do much better but he is still very stiff. I think julianne's bf chuck has a lot of potential. But he really did nothing last night. I was surprised she would let him do that.
Lil kim was a lot better last night to me than last week. And i think she is one of the better ones (after shawn imo). Lawrence taylor did a lot better also than last week. And i have not warmed up to holly.
The craziest Shakespeare production I've seen was Much Ado About Nothing at Fresno State. It was modernized to 1920s Sicily, and they were all members of the Mafia. This was because the director wanted to make a big deal of Hero's bloodstained bedsheets after her wedding night, hanging from the window, proving she had lost her virginity.
Eeewwwww.
-
About the closest I come to seeing a weird Shakespeare production was something that we did at the University of Washington when I was a freshman (1960).
Rod Whitaker, who would later go on to become novelist "Trevanian" (THE EIGER SANCTION), concieved and staged a 1-hour production of HAMLET, which was done live on the University's local television station. The play was presented with a minimum of set, just bits and pieces, against a cyc.
It had some good people in it. John Gilbert, who would go on to join the Seattle Rep, was Hamlet, Marian Hailey, who later did films like LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS was Ophelia and Penny Ogilivy (now the wife of actor Frank Farmer) was Gertrude.
I played Osric...probably because they could find anybody else. It was not my finest moment, but I did enjoy being a part of that project.
-
We spoke to the escrow officer for the sale of our Los Angeles house yesterday, and she informed us that escrow will not close and we are not likely to get the money from the sale until sometime next week, which means that our move will probably not happen until the end of next week (at the earliest). More rescheduling and living out of boxes.
Bummer!
:'(
-
That's really too bad, DR Druxy. I imagine it's not at all uncommon in this economic and lending climate. :(
Good morning!
Still light gray, but it seems hopeful that we'll have sunshine before the day is out. Would LOVE to see some blue sky after so many days of gray.
Page Four Dance!!!
I wonder what is taking so long, Druxy. When I sold my mother's house, escrow closed in two weeks.
-
Very sorry to read of the passing of your Aunt Mildred, DR JRand. You will be in my thoughts today.
-
I've seen a ton of Shakespeare, good and bad, a fair amount unconventional, but very little I would say was outright "weird". I did see Vanessa Redgrave play Prospero in a TEMPEST at the Globe Theatre in London. She made a rather phlegmatic Prospero and the production didn't really work with a strange mideastern concept. The most interesting part of the production was one of the clowns was sick (Trinculo?) and the Artistic Director of the theatre, Mark Rylance, came in to do the role, obstentibly on book, but he never referred to the script and was very good.
I also saw a Mafioso MUCH ADO which also interpolated some Cole Porter songs in it. It was a hash of a concept that didn't work at all, was badly directed, and not particularly well-performed. Benedick came off like a pouting Shirley Temple.
The weirdest Shakespeare I ever saw was an AS YOU LIKE IT where the forest of Arden became a Circus. One character became an organ-grinder's monkey. There was a two-headed lady, a bearded lady. Stilt-walker. Jacques was a clown. Rosiland at one point sang SEND IN THE CLOWNS. It was, once again, a case of trying to shoe-horn a concept onto a play where it didn't work. It would fall into my "bad" category.
Back in 2007, I played Claudius in a sort of bleak, repressive, facist state, modern dress, multi-media Hamlet. The concept worked pretty well and the play got a spread in AMERICAN THEATRE magazine.
-
Lousy news, DR Druxy. :P
-
A couple of friends of mine did a local production of MACBETH that I enjoyed very much but others didn't think much of. The unit set was sort of based on Stonehenge, but the biggest change was that the three witches were portrayed as slinky, voluptuous sirens. One of them had a huge, real defanged python that she used as a prop every night coiled around her. That caused lots of talk.
-
On TV TOnight!™
CBS - NCIS, THE MENTALIST, WITHOUT A TRACE
NBC - BIGGEST LOSER, LAW & ORDER: SVU
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS (recap show and results), PRIMETIME
FOX - AMERICAN IDOL (two hours; Grand Old Opry theme night)
CW - REAPER
-
As I mentioned yesterday, I'll be doing the regular DVD version of THE LAST METRO today. Though I'll rewatch the entire movie, I won't have to spend much time with the bonus features this time around, so I'm hopeful to get it done early enough to have a nice piece of the evening for myself.
-
...
That sounds even worse than what I saw!
Good Morning!
I now have cable TV and internet at my apartment here in Charleston, SC!
*Now, I just need to kindly ask one of my roommates to pack up my Airport Express and send it to me. ;)
Whilst at Carnegie Tech a friend of mine and also a Dramat was in a production of Much Ado About Nothing as an extra. His red tights had a hole in it at the lower part of his leg. He took lipstick and put it on his leg to disguise the fact that he had a hole in his tights. Whilst standing downstage Left-He heard the following exchange from two women audience members.
"He Has a hole in his tights"
"No,he doesn't"
"Yes,He Does"
All of a sudden he felt a clammy finger that attacked the hole in his tights.
"You're right",saith the lady "It is a Hole!"
Eeewwwww.
I'm puzzled; Hero's wedding is a disaster because of the slander. KILL CLAUDIO! And what was the source for the bloody sheets? I doubt either Margaret or Ursula - I always forget which one is tangled ibn the plot - was a virgin.
I did see a great 1930s mafia MERCHANT OF VENICE with Stanley Tucci as the gent who runs off with Nerissa, and the Portia going to court in a fedora and double breasted suit.
-
DR druxy - At least you know it's going to close. -Just how complete/finished is your new place in Austin?
First off, condolences to edisaurus and Jrand for Uncle Bob and Aunt Mildred.
Second off, I'm up.
Third off, in about twenty minutes I will lug ten boxes to the car - hope they all fit. Then I will drive them to the UPS Store and be done with this infernal shipping.
Uncle JO JO-
How long are you going to be in the nether regions of South Carolina?
The interview with David Pevsner on Donald's radio show is WONDERFUL.
Hmm... I don't recall "nether regions" being included in any of the Charleston tourism brochures. ;)
I'm here through the April 27.
Glad someone is listening to Donald's great radio show here on haineshisway.com. Seriously, if it's something you routinely skip or don't even know about, give it a listen.
DR druxy - At least you know it's going to close. -Just how complete/finished is your new place in Austin?
It's my understanding that, if escrow were closed, we could probably move in next week...although there are a few things we want to do ourselves before we actually move in (i.e. cabinets, sprinklers, securing the fence for our dogs, etc.).
HAPPY ST. PADDY'S DAY TO YE ALL !!!
Good Morning to all!
Back from the UPS Store and all packages, all then of 'em, are on their way. I only have two International packages left to ship, and I have to actually take those up to the window at the post office.
-
After lugging these ten big boxes to the car and then into the UPS Store, that may be my exercise for the day.
-
Lunch today:
A grilled panini of marinated flank steak, carmelized onions, and blue cheese. Yummers! :)
-
Oh - I forgot to say earlier:
Glad you are safely home, DR TCB. You were missed. Hope you had a really wonderful trip. :)
It's very odd re: the NATASHA RICHARDSON situation that some reports say she was in critical condition.
This report makes things sound much better:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/090317/entertainment/centertainment_us_britain_richardson
There was an article about it in this morning's montreal paper. It said that the hospital where she had been transfered (sacre coeur) said she was no longer there at 11pm. Since all the other articles said she was in critical condition i could not understand why they would transfer her somewhere else. But maybe she was released?
Lil kim was a lot better last night to me than last week. And i think she is one of the better ones (after shawn imo). Lawrence taylor did a lot better also than last week. And i have not warmed up to holly.
DR Jennifer, at this point I don't disagree too much, but I think it's too early to have favorites. I really don't like Melissa, but that's carry over from The Bachelor, I didn't like her there either. She is a good dancer, but she's had all sorts of experience. I do wonder if the older couple that they showed standing after her dance were her parents. I've been curious to see them ever since they refused to participate in The Bachelor.
I totally forgot it was St Patrick's day and didn't wear one bit of green today.
Anyway....HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY!!
Here's an update
UPDATED: Natasha Richardson Injured In Accident
By Ian Austen
Updated | 1:20 p.m. TORONTO — The Tony-award winning actress Natasha Richardson was taken to a Montreal hospital after a skiing accident on Monday, a Montreal-area resort confirmed on Tuesday.
Lyne Lortie, a spokeswoman for the Mont Tremblant ski resort in the Laurentian Hills north of Montreal, said Ms. Richardson had fallen during a beginner’s lesson. She was not wearing a helmet at the time, she said.
“It was a normal fall; she didn’t hit anyone or anything,” Ms. Lortie said. “She didn’t show any signs of injury, she was talking and she seemed all right.”
As a precaution, Ms. Richardson was accompanied by a member of the resort’s ski patrol and her instructor, who then remained with her at a hotel.
When Ms. Richardson, 45, began experiencing headaches about an hour later, she was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Ste. Agathe, Quebec about 20 minutes from the resort. Ms. Lortie said that Ms. Richardson was transferred to the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal later in the afternoon.
Ms. Lortie said that the resort has no knowledge about Ms. Richardson’s injuries.
The Montreal hospital, citing privacy rules, declined to discuss her condition.
A spokeswoman for the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force, said that it had no information about the accident.
The Canadian Press reported that Kika Markham, the wife of Ms. Richardson’s uncle, Corin Redgrave, had confirmed the skiing incident.
“We know that she has had an accident but we really do not know any more details,” she told the news agency. “We are very concerned.”
Ms. Richardson won a Tony in 1998 for her performance in “Cabaret.” Her film performances include role in “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Parent Trap.”
Several Canadian news outlets said that that Liam Neeson, Ms. Richardson’s husband, had left a film set in Toronto to be with his wife in Montreal on Monday.
She is the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson, the film director and producer.
Mr. Neeson married Ms. Richardson in 1994 and the couple have two children.
-
Thanks for that update, DR Cillaliz.
From that report, it doesn't yet sound as bad as the initial reports that were saying that she had sustained some kind of brain damage. I was envisioning a Sonny Bono type of skiing accident.
-
My deepest sympathies to DRs Jrand 58 and Edisaurus on the loss of their famliy members.
Also, my sympathes to DR Danise for having her pleas for help rejected.
-
That blasted Steve Suskin book is cramping my sleeping time! I am finding it quite difficult to put it down to accomplish anything.
After watching it sit in a pile for about a year or so, I finally started reading Blair Tindall's "Mozart in the Jungle". I read almost half of it last night before finally making myself go to bed around 1:30am. I had heard about all the "sex and drugs" in the book, but I'm also finding the history of Arts funding in the US quite fascinating too.
DR Jose, I could NOT put that book down. It's one of the best books I've ever read.
-
RE: Natasha Richardson.... Time Out had her dead this morning. Glad to see she is still with us.
-
There are much worse rumors (and the reporter of the rumors says he has inside info) about Ms. Richardson. Time Out New York's Adam Feldman reported the rumors, which he said he had inside info on - however TONY pulled the article immediately.
-
TCB, did you have a good trip? Did you think of me when you saw the casino carpets?
-
I went to the post office - no lines at all - so I got the two International packages shipped, along with seven other orders that had come in last night. So, I was completely caught up until I got home, where there was a new order awaiting - and that's a good thing.
-
I just created a Guy Haines/Bruce Kimmel playlist on my iPod, and it totals 3 hours.
-
Back from a very productive couple of hours at the book sale site. They will be ready for opening night Thursday, but I'm not scheduled to work until Friday and Saturday mornings.
-
I didn't know Bruce Kimmel sings. You should record something sometime, BK.
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from the offices of Charleston Stage Co.!
-
I saw the naked Macbeth in Washingotn D.C. a year or two back, and it was indeed naked.
That would certainly help the budget - no $$ for costumes
But it has to be done in the summertime, in order to avoid the heating bills.
-
-And there seem to be many varying reports concerning the current condition of Natasha Richardson. :-\
DR Jose, I could NOT put that book down. It's one of the best books I've ever read.
Once I realized that Sam Sanders - one of my Heroes(!) - was going to be a bigger part of the book than I thought, I just had to keep reading. And reading. And reading.
-
Oh, and I'm waiting for the Suskin book to come out for the Kindle. Probably a year if it takes 1 to 3 months to ship normally.
-
Sam Sanders - one of my Heroes(!)
Which part is Sam involved with: the sex, or the drugs? ;)
-
Page 6 Kindle dance. It's a quiet dance since it's on the "Whisper Net"
-
Guess I'll have to pick up the Suskin book - I wasn't that thrilled with his last effort, Second Act Trouble, but this one sounds like it's better.
-
I am taking DD Zach for his annual doggie checkup at the vet later this evening. I'm a hopin' and a-prayin' that he'll cooperate and provide me a "sample" between the time I get home and the time of the appointment! :)
-
I have mentioned it before, but the craziest Shakespeare production I have ever seen was a production of HAMLET by the Seattle Rep in the early 70's. The title character was played by an young Christopher Walkin in a gold lame jumpsuit. In my memory, Hamlet made his first entrance of a real motorcycle; although a fellow actor who claimed to have worked on the show denies that. The production was most famous for the scene with a totally nude Ophelia, who basically sleep-walked her way along the top of the scaffolding that made up the set. Once word of the nudity got out, the theater was packed to the rafters at every single performance.
There is a story that I have heard on a number of occasions over the years (but cannot verify) that the actress playing Ophelia began rubbing down her body before the nude scene with baby oil. Since she liked the glistening effect so much, she began using more and more of the oil at each performance. One night, she supposedly used so much oil that she slipped and fell down the stage left staircase, and landed spread-eagle at the front of the stage.
-
Guess I'll have to pick up the Suskin book
I'm gonna have DR elmore3003 sign my copy, since he's a Cited Personage and all.
-
Where are you ordering the Suskin book from??? Amazon says one to three months for delivery time.
-
spread-eagle
Perhaps she was confused, and thought she was playing the bus and truck of Chicago?
-
Where are you ordering the Suskin book from??? Amazon says one to three months for delivery time.
I pre-ordered from Amazon last June, and it arrived this past Friday upon release.
[The release was pushed back several times.]
-
Hmmm. Weird.
-
Guess I'll just order it and then if I find it over at Samuel French, I'll just cancel the order.
-
Sam Sanders - one of my Heroes(!)
Which part is Sam involved with: the sex, or the drugs? ;)
Both. But his drugs were prescribed. For the most part.
*I still remember him playing with Daniel Heifetz on a program that included one of the Mozart violin sonatas. Clear, musical, beautiful - and with NO DAMPER PEDAL! -Wow!... And I'm now remembering the sadness I felt when I heard of his passing back in 1999...
-
Well, I think I'm going to head back into downtown Charleston for a bit. I've finished up my work here at the office, and since the sun is back out, and since it's also St. Patrick's Day - and, yes, I'm wearing green - I might as well not stay in the office all afternoon.
Laters...
-
Good morning. I am alone in my house for the first time since Toby was brought home. DH Jed took him to daycare as usual, but I stayed home from work so I can go get a minor procedure done at the doctor's this afternoon. How strange to be in a quiet house.
VIBES to all who need them...
And, HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY from Toby....
He's very proud that he can find his feet :)
DR Ann, Toby is SO adorable! :D
***VIBES*** for your outpatient procedure this afternoon.
Office Depot arrived around 12:30 and I headed home. I want to jump back into the Suskin book but i've got band parts to prepare. I liked Suskin's SCOND ACT TROUBLE. It was a lot of reprints I had either read thirty years ago or had never seen and I thought it was a lot of fun.
Oh... Nevermind... I have a vocal rehearsal to run... (Spoo!)....
re: natasha richardson
It is strange how the reports vary. But the one cillaliz posted and the one i posted before it said the same thing.
I think i would tend to be more trusting of those people who actually went to the Montreal hospital to check on her condition.
-
spread-eagle
Perhaps she was confused, and thought she was playing the bus and truck of Chicago?
Or, perhaps, Cinderella in Into the Woods?
-
Great pic, Ann!
-
Sitting here at Junior's deli. Why can't people be on time?
-
Wasn't there a rock musical version of OTHELLO?
I have a vague memory of seeing it at the Music Center here in Los Angeles bck in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I think that Jerry Lee Lewis played Iago. Don't recall who played the other parts.
I think we left during intermission.
-
MTV UK is reporting that Natasha Richardson has died, but I haven't seen this confirmed by any other source, and it could be completely false.
-
DR JoseSPiano is probably getting a live report from some Twitterer at the hospital.
Did someone just delete a post?? Just curious.
The weirdest version of Shakespeare that I've seen was a local production of "Cymbeline" that was set in a post-apocalyptic future. They had a steel set and an android servant (incredible make-up and costume). But it was probably the first Shakespeare play that I could follow and actually understand. I was very carefully following the action and translating each line in my head, hoping that it would make sense...and it did. :)
Did someone just delete a post?? Just curious.
I did. I had originally posted, asking if all of our iPhoners had upgraded their software today, but then I realized that today was just the press announcement of the software upgrade. It's not actually available yet.
...And did any DR - or yourself, DR DAW - post the news that the Amazon Kindle software is now available for the iPhone. Of course, since the iPhone's screen is much smaller than an actual Kindle, it's not exactly the same tactile reading experience. However, iPhone users can now purchase Kindle-books from Amazon.
And the software upgrade will coincide with the release of the new iPhone 3.0(!).
I liked it, too. Not great, but very enjoyable.
I believe I see blue sky and sunshine! First time in many days! How lovely to welcome it back!
-
I spent a fun afternoon revisiting THE LAST METRO, this time on DVD. SUch an enjoyable film, and everyone's just wonderful in it. The DVD can't touch the Blu-ray in terms of sharpness and color richness, but apart from some noisy reds and some resolution problems at the very end before the credits, it looked very nice.
-
I scanned through all of the bonus features which I had already watched and noted which were anamorphic and which weren't. Surprisingly, the trailer is nonanamorphic letterbox while on the Blu-ray, it was done properly at full resolution. Strange.
-
Awww, Toby is our very own HHW leprechaun!
-
I also had time to scan through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing and nothing in the previews for tomorrow either.
-
COndolences to DR Edi. I'll be thinking about you today.
Hello, everyone.
Condolences to JRand and Edi. I am sorry for your losses.
Vibes to Zack for a good check-up and a timely poop.
I see I missed MISS KAREN. Since I was born a Murphy I don't feel any need to wear green; I figure I'm Irish enough already.
That is all.
DR Jrand, condolences to you and your family on the loss of your aunt.
DR Edi, condolences on the loss of your beloved Uncle Bob.
-
Oh, how bizarre--the latest report from AP says that Miranda Richardson in on a flight to the U.S. No word as to her actual condition.
-
According to the Huffington Post, both The New York Post and Time Out New York are saying Natasha (not Miranda) Richardson is brain dead. TMZ is refuting this, however...
-
DR Edisaurus - I am so very sorry to hear about the disappointment on the professional side of things. You are so talented, and it's just a shame that that talent can't be harnessed in a creative and fulfulling way. :(
Ditto!
Typically bad reviews.
We spoke to the escrow officer for the sale of our Los Angeles house yesterday, and she informed us that escrow will not close and we are not likely to get the money from the sale until sometime next week, which means that our move will probably not happen until the end of next week (at the earliest). More rescheduling and living out of boxes.
Bummer!
:'(
Just as long as it sells in the near future vibes!!!
Playbill On Line says this about the Natasha Richardson issue
"The extent of Richardson's injuries have not been released, although a posting on TMZ says that Richardson is suffering from brain swelling. The New York Post, which says Richardson is brain dead, reports that the actress "is being transported to New York this afternoon so her mom Vanessa Redgrave, two children and other loved ones can say goodbye before she's taken off life-support."
DR Ginny, sorry about the loss of your "Aunt Mim"
I've got some things to tidy up with my computer desktop, and then I'm heading down to have a fun, free evening of viewing pleasure.
Thank you, DR Jane. We had a nice visit with her and her daughter and son-in-law at my cousin's wedding last October.
God I hope so, and that reports of her injuries are overblown.
DR TCB did you have a nice vacation?
DR Vixmom, I hope today was easier than yesterday.
DR Jane, that is crazy that one book has 24 holds. isn't the library just for your town? Even the most popular books here would never have more than 10-15 people on the list. And that would only be if it just came out.
Until someone from the family says something, I really wish all these "news" people would keep their traps shut.
Back from a good lunch meeting - I had an egg and bacon sandwich. Not bad. I will definitely be coming to NY in early May to put up the act of the gal singer I've been working with in LA. She just paid for my flight and now I must find a nice hotel with a good price. Any ideas? I do hope we can have a couple of fun get-togethers while I'm there.
ABC World News is doing a story on Natasha Richardson...haven't heard it yet
-
Good Evening!
Well... I walked up and down King St. in Charleston, and, well, that was about it. King St. is essentially made up of a lot old(er) houses that have been turned into stores, high-end boutiques and restaurants. It reminded me a lot of D.C.'s Georgetown. I need to block out a larger amount of time to check out some of the side streets, as well as the area along the water.
What all of this horrible Natasha Richardson news should remind us is to wear a helmet! We don't let our kids ski/snowboard without wearing one.
-
Happy Green day to all!
TOD:
today's: A production of "Macbeth" expressed solely in the dance and an all nude version of "Hamlet."
Yesterday's TOD: Merv was great especially with Riunite on Ice. "We'll be right back." I never cared for Mike Douglas, but he got great guests. Dinah Shore was one one of the best-- warm and lively. Jack Paar was too pretentious, but I liked his interviews with Judy Garland and Dody Goodman. Dick Cavett was good when he'd shut up and let his guest talk. Steve Allen (and his cast of zanies-- Tom Poston, Louis Nye, Don Knotts) and Johnny Carson are still the tops.
Friday's TOD: "The Best of Mama Cass" and "The Best of Spanky and Our Gang" (which amounted to about three songs in the case of the latter)
-
I had soup for dinner last night. Campbell's feels compelled to print in bold letters on the the front of the can that Soup is Great for Cooking. Damn-- and I had planned on eating it raw!
I hope that is not true.
DR JMK I have been to a ski slope in about 10 years. I don't ever recall seeing people wear helmets. Has that changed?
-
I booked the Wyndham Gardens in Chelsea through the site that Jose recommended - incredible deal I must say - the five-day stay is $777. Most expensive night is $175, cheapest is like $135 or something. Free wireless Internet, too. I do have to confirm with the hotel itself that the bed is at least a queen, but I don't get the hotel confirmation number for three days - once I have that I'll call. IF there were to be a problem with that, then I'll cancel and book elsewhere - there were incredible deals for many hotels on that site. Best of all, they don't charge the cc in advance like some of these places do - not charged till the end of the stay.
-
I fly in on May 6 and leave the morning of May 11. The show, at the Metropolitan Room, is on May 9, a Saturday night.
-
Best of all, I'll have plenty of free time to play.
-
And since the trip and hotel is paid for by her, I might even pop for a show.
Here it doesn't work that way. My library did used to share books with the next suburb over. But that ended in september. I think it was similar to your situation in that we could reserve books from either library or have them brought to my library (although the other one was only 10 minutes away).
But now we can only get books from my library. But if they don't have the books and don't want to buy them we can get an inter-library transfer. But i've never had to do that.
-
re: Natasha Richardson.
I wish some rep of hers would make a statement. It is crazy that so many sites are reporting very severe things.
This article does not say her exact condition. But it is from the main television station in canada. And their reporter went to the hospital she was staying at and did get some real information.
Just had a wonderful twenty-minute Jacuzzi. Much needed. I forgot to mention that when I got home it was so pretty out that I did the long jog - I must say, the later in the day the harder it is.
I'm getting ready to watch country night on AMERICAN IDOL.
I was going to mention that I watched the gala this sunday of STAR ACADEMIE (basically the quebec version of idol). And IDOL could really learn something from what they do.
A few weeks ago Celine dion was the guest performer. And this past week we had bryan adams, michel legrand (oscar winner), and mario pelchat (french singer who performs in a lot of musicals).
I was amazed at how well bryan adams spoke french. Although he sang only in English. But the interesting part of all 3 perfromers (adams, legrand, and pelchat) is that they sang many numbers. And all the contestants got to do duets with them. It ends up being amazing. And you get to see the talent. It is truly unbelievable how talented these french singers are. Their only downfall to me is that they sing in English a lot. And some of them have minor pronunciation problems.
-
DR Jennifer, what do you think about the new "dance off" on DWS?
Also, I read that it is Melissa's parents and new boyfriend in the audience. Guess they'd rather see their daughter dance than be part of a show where she makes out with a guy who's making out with 20 other women...
-
Shut Your Trap. I like that - I think it should be the name of a new play.
-
Service was as it should be. Everyone was doing well. I did not recognize many of the children of my cousins - until I talked to them and they told me their names. They are all grown ups now, not school-age children.
Of course some of my first cousins showed up in sweatshirts and jeans....but they were THERE! I asked my cousin Carolyn if she just came in from mowing the lawn and she told me how fat and old I looked - so it was just a normal family get together.
-
I forgot to watch RuPaul's Drag Race last night, but it was a compilation show, so maybe I will catch the rerun next Monday night.
-
Tomorrow I am going to take all of the costumes I have been collecting down to the theatre......you can't be a nice dress for $2.50 at the Goodwill....most of them new with tags still attached....I always buy the COLOR TAG of the week which means half off the regular price.
-
Jennifer I have lived where my library had an agreement with the next town over. The system here is different as all the libraries are part of the county & run by the county. The book with 24 holds has 13 copies scattered throughout 7 libraries.
I picked up two books today, 1 book has an Ashland bar code & the other a Medford one. Last year when the libraries closed down due to lack of funds it was suggested Ashland break off & support our own library. The argument against doing so it that the books don't really belong to us but to the country.
-
DR Jennifer, I attempted to figure out which branch's "owned" the 13 books. I'm not sure if I was reading it correctly, however, I found only 7 listed. I suspect some of the branch's are very small with Medford being the central & largest of them all.
-
The Timberland Regional Library (http://www.trlib.org/) (where I work) is made up of 27 branches, spread out over five counties. It's all one library system and we all use the same computer system but not every branch has every title. We have three selectors who decide what to buy for the entire district. On average, two or three copies of each selected non-fiction title is ordered and four or five copies of each selected fiction title is ordered. Those are just the averages. The selectors have a "high demand list" where they can see every single title in the system that has an on-line request and buy more copies if they want.
Once the computers came into common use, our library system has been about getting a broad range of genres and titles spread throughout the entire district, but not necessarily a high number of copies of each title. The patrons know that as long as a title is in the computer system, it's available for anyone anywhere to check out and have sent to his or her own local library within the district.
Not that you asked me. :)
Screenwriter Millard Kaufman, who co-created the cartoon character Mr. Magoo, was nominated for Academy Awards for his screenplays for "Take the High Ground!" and "Bad Day at Black Rock" and won a cult following as a first-time novelist at the age of 90, has died, a spokeswoman said. He was 92.
I am reading my copy of QUICKSILVER by Mr Fitzroy Davis.....very interesting. I can't decide if the Orson Welles character is Henry or Joel.....Mr Tyrone Power seems to be Nicky....and of course the Basil Rathbone character is most interesting....all in all....so far....an interesting read. Thanks to DR ELMORE who sent me a link to order it.
DR Jane, there was a caller on Car Talk on Saturday named Brian from Ashland, Oregon. I thought of your Bryan
-
Hands down TOD:
Hamlet directed by Libby Appel - done in leather with Hamlet spun around on a roulette wheel with music by Appel's son - even though she chose the music from several submissions and didn't even know until she made her decision that the favored composer WAS HER VERY OWN SON!! Imagine that! Several other relatives and friends were involved in the production.
And after she had alienated and driven away TWO volunteer organizations who had spent years at the Indiana Repertory Theatre and lost almost one third of their subscription base, Ms Appel moved on to other opportunities.
-
For some reason when I add these documented facts to Ms Appel's Wikipedia page, they soon disappear.
I doubt my Bryan has time to listen to Car Talk, or any other Talk these days. Is that Car Talk as in repair? LOL-I can't imagine any of my family listening to that. Keith's Dad would have.
;D imagine!
As far as I can tell Ms Appel didn't hurt our festival, otherwise would they have kept her for so long?
It's a really funny show on NPR. The first caller wanted to know if she should tell her ex, who got the car in the divorce, that she had spilled a whole container of meal worms in the car, lol. I could tell it wasn't him by the way he described his problem with his car and that he lived in Ashland etc. It was clearly not your Bryan, but I thought of you right away, nonetheless
I'm off to my parents' house for a little get-together. Have a good evening, all. :D
But before I go...
This reminds me about a joke that I've posted before...and here it is again! ;D
CURTAIN RODS
She spent the first day packing her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things.
On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of Chardonnay.
When she had finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp shells, dipped in caviar, into the hollow of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.
When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first few days. Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning and mopping and airing the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam-cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere.
Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting.
Nothing worked. People stopped coming over to visit... Repairmen refused to work in the house...the maid quit...
Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move.
A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out, and eventually, even the local realtors refused to return their calls.
Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place.
The ex-wife called the man, and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely, and said that she missed her old home terribly, and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back...
Knowing that his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth...But only if she were to sign the papers that very day. She agreed, and within the hour, his lawyers delivered the paperwork.
A week later, the man and his new girlfriend stood smirking as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home...
...including the curtain rods.
I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON'T YOU??
DR Jennifer I believe the reps silence is an indication the news about Natasha Richardson is true. :(
-
Watching the new DVD of The Robe - what a transfer. Warners should be forced to look at it and learn how nice it is when no one sucks all the blue out of the transfer. And what did Fox do right that Warners can't seem to do? They had an IB Tech reference print and color timed to that - which would seem to put the lie to towing the Warners line that Mr. Harris does, saying that An American In Paris looked like it does now back then in IB Tech - not true, never was, never will be.
-
That was my thought. If she was fine, you'd expect news of some sort. And saying there will be a statement tomorrow from the family, doesn't sound good to me
-
Speaking of Bryan. I went to the dermatologist today & having been an older student herself, she suggested Bryan think about dermatology. His response was..
"Kind of a long shot, plus I don't know if I would want to deal with people's gross skin conditions all day. We just saw some derm patients last week. It was pretty bad, had two of these guys..."
I shall spare you the photo he sent. I will say I don't know how this person could tolerate to sit or do other things I shall not go into.
I have had a pp copy of this since college that a theatre professor gave me who told me it was based on Katherine Cornell's production of Romeo and Juliet. I found a hardbound 1st of it about ten-fifteen years ago as well as another Fitzroy Davis' book, called Through the Doors of Brass, about Hollywood. I started Quicksilver once, but decided I was ready to devour it yet. What can you tell me about this epic?
-
DR Laura - I did think of you everytime I looked at a casino carpet. Unfortunately, I didn't find any really impressive ones.
-
spread-eagle
Perhaps she was confused, and thought she was playing the bus and truck of Chicago?
Or, perhaps, Cinderella in Into the Woods?
As I remember, Cinderella was wearing a gown.
-
Well, then, did you look at the ceilings? Doorknobs? Light fixtures?
-
Happy Green day to all!
TOD:
today's: A production of "Macbeth" expressed solely in the dance and an all nude version of "Hamlet."
Knotts) and Johnny Carson are still the tops.
Friday's TOD: "The Best of Mama Cass" and "The Best of Spanky and Our Gang" (which amounted to about three songs in the case of the latter)
Boo and hiss, Kerry! I love all of Spanky and Our Gang's songs
-
In the mail today from NetFlix, Mama Mia. I wonder how long Keith will last watching it. I have a feeling I will not see the end of the movie. I'll let you know.
Jane, tell Bryan that I think that is a very wise idea. Stick to proctology!
-
;D
-
DR TCB, did you have a nice time with your friends?
-
DR Laura, I have decided to go to Las Vegas to look at casino carpeting. Ok, I'm going to a meeting...in June (yikes) but I WILL photograph the carpeting
-
Good afternoon everyone.
The last 2 days of posts are really good. I think I'll just keep quiet since I can't add anything interesting.
-
Just got back from the Hal Linden show at the Crest Theater in Delray Beach. As DR Arnold Brockman said It was one of the best shows every done there and I agree. A slick well put together show. Wonderful orchestrations and arrangements amusing banter and is amazing at 78 years old!! (As of March 20th)
-
LOL, Cillaliz.
-
Sam, I don't have anything interesting to post, but I post anyway.
-
I am uploading some absolutely fascinating multi-second clips to youtube.
-
I think I better skip the word of the day. I don't know what to do with the definition.
-
Sam, I don't have anything interesting to post, but I post anyway.
And yet your posts are always a pleasure to read :)
-
Just found Shakespeare on Broadway in the cd shelves. Will listen to tonight.
-
DR TCB, did you have a nice time with your friends?
Yes and no. It was wonderful to be away from the nightmare at our office, but maybe I should consider giving up traveling altogether.
-
G'night!
-
Dear Laura: Hi Laura. Yes, Bruce Kimmel should sing.
-
DR TCB you live in a beautiful part of the country. Maybe friends can visit you and take short day trips.
-
Hope everyone is having a wonderful St. Patrick's Day. See you in 3 hours or so.
Must survey for spiders in the apartment now, it's been warm the last couple of afternoons and the spiders are moving about to freely for me.
-
Hi Jane
-
No one got their Anya or Rio today? I've had reports that a few people on the film music board got theirs.
-
Good Evening!
...Let's see how many television channels I can surf tonight!
;)
-
bk - I'm glad QuikBook.com worked out for you. I've walked by the Chelsea Wyndham a couple of times, looks like a good hotel. I also believe that all the hotels available on QuikBook.com have been "approved" by the QuikBook's staff - and if any customer happens to have a problem with the hotel, then the customer can report any problems back to QuikBook.
*You can also follow them on Twitter: @QuikBook -So that you can get advance notice of any upcoming sales.
**They also handle hotels in other cities, and, after just taking a glance at the site, if anyone has been thinking of planning a trip to DC this summer... -There's a $67(!!!)/weekend night special for the Latham in Georgetown right now!
-
I'm off to Florida tomorrow, leaving for the airport at 7:45, which for me is very early. I'll be back late Friday night.
-
Have a great time in Florida, FJL. If it is supposed to be a fun trip, that is.
-
In silliness, about five seconds of one of the Helen-Reddy-mix parodies started off a Jeanne Moos report.
Here's the link to Jeanne Moos' CNN report. It's about five or six seconds at the very start of the report, and that's it, but what the heck?
(There's a short commercial first.)
-
My goodness, it takes a long time for things to upload to youtube.
-
Jose - i sent Jim an email with the CNN link in case he's interested.
-
I watched the next episode on THE UNIVERSE Blu-ray set. This one was called "Spaceship Earth" going into the Earth's history in the universe. Very interesting.
-
Page Eleven Dance!!!
-
Thanks, Laura. yes, it should be fun, although we'll likely get a few health-related supportive things accomplished.
-
~~~~~SAFE TRAVEL VIBES TO DR FJL~~~~~
Have a wonderful time in Florida! Don't forget the sunscreen!

COOL!!

Then I decided I wanted to see a musical in high definition, so I put in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III and thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
-
Next I watched tonight's NCIS. Not one of the better episodes. A very anticlimactic conclusion, not very satisfying.
-
THE MENTALIST had a very entertaining episode.
But why are cops such bad shots?
-
FJL, You are somebody!! (almost a "The Jerk" reference.)

Travel vibes for FJL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I had a friend drop in for a little bit this evening. So, that got me a little behind in watching AMERICAN IDOL.
-
FJL, You are somebody!! (almost a "The Jerk" reference.)
The Resident Artists down here happened to watch "The Jerk" over the weekend. They've been quoting and quoting and quoting from it ever since. ::)
-
Cool FJL, I always love Jeanie Moos reports (did i spell that right?) especially this one!
-
I was fine with the person who went home on DWS. I don't think the dance off is a good idea though. After standing there waiting and waiting, the energy to dance again just doesn't seem to be there
-
Shut Your Trap. I like that - I think it should be the name of a new play.
Or a game show! Three contestants are each given a real juicy piece of gossip. The one who keeps his or her mouth shut the longest wins.
-
I would love to go to New York in May, however, since I'm making the carpet tour of Vegas in June, I think my NYC trip will have to wait until later in the year
-
Thanks for all the well wishes!
Sorry work has kept me off HHW. I don't know the internet situation in Florida, but I hope to keep up.
-
I'm going to an Immigration Law seminar there. The registrations must really be down because they keep sweetening the pot. They are giving away a free seminar later, free access to an online library for 2 months, all sorts of discounts at the hotel (restaurants and bars), a payment plan and money to gamble with. They haven't offered any of that in the past.
-
So, I only saw through Alexis' "Jolene" song. I thought hers was the weakest vocal. In fact, all three women I saw chose songs that had notes too low for them to sing comfortably. Adam's song was strange, but it was entertaining.

That's great, DR FJL! Maybe they'll do a Jeremy Piven Story next.
-
FJL< have there been more hits on your video since that story ran?
-
Maybe they'll up it to free food, Cillaliz.
-
I think I'll head down to bed now.
Good night!
-
Maybe they'll up it to free food, Cillaliz.
It's already 25% off the total bill at 2 restaurants in the Palazzo nd 2 for 1 margaritas at another
-
Time for me to sleep. I have to be at a jail 30 miles from here by 8:30 AM. oh joy
-
Took a nice hot shower and am now relaxing, playing CDs.
-
good night everyone.
-
Everyone? There's no everyone. There's only WUSSBURGERS and plenty of 'em.
-
Well, I managed to get home without killing myself this evening. That was a big plus. This evening, I was chatting with the conductor of Footloose in the pit when all of a sudden, the foldable keyboard bench I was sitting on collapsed and managed to put my left calf into a vice. And as I was still sitting on the bench, it was squeezing my calf. Well, we managed to get my leg free and assessed the damage. The bench... broken. I had a small cut in my leg from the metal on the bench, my calf isn't really in pain, but it is sore. Tomorrow, I can assume that the area witll be black and blue. Thanks to my walking for exercise and carrying the weight I do, my calves are in fabulous shape. Had they not been, it would have hurt a helluva a lot more. I think I messed up my left elbow when I went down, or it's piano elbow from the deceptionaly difficult score for Footloose.
I'm going to take some Advil and go to bed.
-
Still relaxing. I finished the notes around ten.
