Last night, for the first time in over forty years, the cats and I watched Witness for the Prosecution. I remembered only bits of the film, like Una O'Connor's trial testimony, the banter between Laughton and Lanchester, Marlene Dietrich's "Wanna kiss me, Duckie?" and scar, and the wonderful ending with the cancellation of the vacation, but it's a film I could watch over and over because the cast and direction are so good. I thought the Laughton-Lanchester scenes owed a bit to The Man Who Came To Dinner, and they are clearly having the time of their lives playing off each other. I've always liked Norma Varden, who can do no wrong, but the cast is an amazing collection of wonderful character actors and I revelled in the performances.
