RE GREASE and the austin "scandal".

Can someone PM what the story is.  I have heard zero about this and am now curious.

And re: the ages, aren't max and laura 21 and 20 respectively? Are you saying that all of those cast members they showed are 20????  I can't believe that.

Would it be better to watch the Starfighter movie first, before listening to the cast album of your show, or doesn't it matter?  I'm not familiar with the movie or its premise.

It was a fundraiser for Canticum Novum and the NY Virtuoso Singers...two choral groups conducted by Harold Rosenbaum.  Canticum is talented amateurs; the other group is all pro and focuses on contemporary American choral music - not always very accessible stuff!

At the "gay-la", we were treated to peformances by The Western Wind, a well-know a cappella sextet.

It was mentioned that this week will see the East Coast premiere of a choral work by Schwartz [setting of a text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow], and also that Stephen is currently working on an opera.

That is all.

Yes, Kathleen Marshall said that immediately after GREASE Academy, she would have chosen Juliana and Derek as Sandy and Danny. I'm not sure in the end that wouldn't have been the way to go, but after hearing how desperately high "You're the One That I Want" is for the guys, I'm sure Derek would have needed the key taken down a bit.

Not saying anything except what I've heard.  8)

Well...  From what I've heard... You could insert the name of any number of young actors who were "responsible" for that break-up.   I mean, Mr. Shaiman flew someone else out had someone else sitting next to him at the Las Vegas opening of Hairspray in which Austin Miller was playing Link.  And I believe there was a similar situation when the show opened in Los Angeles - and, again, Austin Miller was playing Link.

And there are many more young actors who are responsible for many other break-ups - low and high profile.

I see Marilyn Maye is in New York at the Metropolitan Room.  She is great.  Every summer for eons she's been going to The New Inn at Lake Okoboji, the lakes area I go to.  She did everything she could the summer we had to raise 6 million dollars in about 8 weeks to prevent a developer from tearing down a 100 year old amusement park (we succeeded). It was almost funny, you wouldn't even have to tell her about it, but any event that happened...there she was willing to take the mic and sing for the cause...gotta love that.

She also wrote a great song about my home town Estherville when she got stranded there in a blizzard one year.  Anyway, as far as Cabaret, she is timeless. I haven't seen her in several years but my family has and said she's as good as always

Someone was pointing out that Danny Zuko as a starring role in the stage version is similar in "scope" to Phantom - that while it's a "star" role, it only requires the stamina of a 25-minute performance spread out over the course of the show; the material just makes it feel like the actor is onstage and active more.  I can't really tell from the script - does that sound right to anyone who's done the show?

Someone was pointing out that Danny Zuko as a starring role in the stage version is similar in "scope" to Phantom - that while it's a "star" role, it only requires the stamina of a 25-minute performance spread out over the course of the show; the material just makes it feel like the actor is onstage and active more.  I can't really tell from the script - does that sound right to anyone who's done the show?

I'm wondering...since they had the "Dannys" sing "Greased Lightning" on the audition, does anyone think (know?) if they would change the stage show and have him sing it and not Kenickie?  I can just imaging thunderous throngs of the slacker backers yelling "why didn't he sing the song from the TV show"??

Money talks.  If Max doesn't walk the walk, I daresay they'd rather go with an alternative than have the show bomb.

It's possible someone will convince Max to bow out rather than disgrace himself in a Broadway debut.  That is a viable alternative for everyone.

But...Max MAY prove me wrong.  But I will be AMAZED if he does, that's all I am saying.

And I'd be amazed if Austin is cast in another role in this "Grease" production...he'd steal the show every time he would walk on stage.

AND something I sometimes forget......GREASE starts at a reunion for the class of '59, so we are seeing these things through the eyes of the kids returning to school....so their ages being more than "high school" is not quite so jarring.....

Although I don't like the show much.....  I think I liked it much better before it became a franchise.

I liked Austin as Link in Hairspray.... I just can't see him as a Danny in Grease.

As far as dancing is concerned, the role of Danny has never, in my experience, been cast as a "singer who dances".  More usually as a "singer who moves well".  They will be customizing this show around their new stars, and making them look good.  Heck, some of those Danny's in the Weissler revival didn't even move well.  We'll see what happens.

As for "dance off", it's all about Cha-Cha.

And, finally(?), the show's opening night at the Brooks Atkinson is not scheduled until August 19.  There is plenty of time for training, coaching, rehearsals - and press events - before the show even starts rehearsals.  And, trust me, "Grease Academy" is back in session as of last night.

Post by: Ron Pulliam on March 26, 2007, 11:59:01 AM
Well, if they're basing the new "Grease" more on the movie than on the play, I have to say that the movie "Cha-Cha" was second to Travolta's "Danny" in the dancing department...and one would assume they would want to go that way on Broadway.

But....This is sounding more and more like a "Grease" I'd avoid like the plague.

Yesterday was busy!

I was up at 5:50 a.m.  I stripped my bed and made a trip to a laundromat with pillows (two standard, two body), a quilt and three fleece blankets, plus a very substantial mattress pad that fluffed up so full after an hour's drying that I could barely fold it in half to carry it to my car!

I was back home by 10 a.m.   Even though I wash clothes weekly, my machine cannot handle large items like blankets, pillows, etc.   So for this week's laundry, I took everything else I'd normally wash at home.

My arms are plenty sore from all the reaching and stretching (to hold heavy wet items and get them to a large dryer) (to keep dried items off the floor while I folded them).

The afternoon I spent watching the first disc of the first season of "Lost".  SPECTACULAR on my plasma HDTV.  I took a break to prepare my dinner, and then settled in and watched the episodes again with the commentaries on.  A very enjoyable evening that ended at 10 p.m.

OMG, all these new avatars!

Maybe I'll dig up a photo from the year Der Brucer took that seafarer picture, but still - I kind of enjoy having Toby and Dylan as my avatar.
I'm the one to blame for der B's new avatar.  We were in Austria at the time.  Circa 1987/88, something like that.

Techno-geek question for any DRs:  Does anyone access this site via a Treo or Treo-like cell phone?

It will be time for me to get a new phone in a few months, and I'm wondering if I should spring for a plan that includes Internet - and whether you could access this site [satisfactorily] on a Treo or a Blackberry or such.

DR Singdaw, check to see if the Treo uses Blazer as its web browser.  I have a Palm TX that uses Blazer, and while it does access this here site very well, it does not allow for posting because the Submit button does not work.  I've been looking for another browser to install but it seems a complicated affair.

In another case of lemonade -

I got a call from the store.  The store's manager, Carol, was told by the regional management that she'd overscheduled this week's cashier's hours.  As a result, my hours for Saturday have been dropped (I've a hunch others have had their hours cut, as well).

But this turns out to be a good thing.  Saturday, elder Grandlad will be in Baltimore for the Pinewood Derby regionals, along with his Daddy.  Magic Mommy, meanwhile, has a shower she'd like to attend.  Which leaves younger grandlad William.  He's on standby - his Pinewood car didn't quite qualify at the local level, but if one of the other kids drops out, he may get to go.

The last thing Daddy wants is to be keeping two kids under control, while they will be running in opposite directions.  And Daddy has a short fuse on his temper as it is.

My being free on Saturday gives us two options.  If William goes to Baltimore - which would be great - then der Grampa and I could tag along and help with the grandlads.  On the other hand, if William doesn't go to Baltimore, we head to their house and spend time with him, while Magic Mommy takes that shower.

So, everything comes out fine!

Like I say, lemonade!

DR Jennifer, what did you think of TAR last night?

SPOILERS FOR LAST NIGHT'S SHOW.

*
*
*

I liked it. Although i would have rather the guidos left.  I never really liked teri and ian in their previous race. But i thought they were pretty good racers this time around.

It was very different to me (last night's show). Instead of total bunching we had like 4 tiers of players. It was like watching 4 different races happening at the same time. Last week everyone was racing at the same time. And this week there were so many hours of difference. I didn't have to worry about my beauties losing.

I was surprised that charla/mirna were brave enough to get on that first flight. And also surprised that nobody went with them. That took guts.  And did anybody notice how they were edited. Totally different. All the last weeks they were shown to be drama queens and mirna was looking like a lunatic. But this week charla (little one) did most of the interview talking. And it was like you almost were cheering for them to come in first (since they really deserved it).

It will be interesting to see next week how far behind the guidos are. I'm guessing it must be like 12 hours. If charla/mirna's boat hadn't been delayed by storm they would have been a whole day ahead!

I always complain about bunching. But i guess it would be pretty crazy to have one team a full day ahead. Especially one i don't really like. :)

But i guess one thing i did like about last night was that there was room to separate the teams. You had to do tasks. YOu had to go on different flights. It wasn't everyone all on the same flight.

I must say though i am quite shocked that C/M have been #1 for two weeks in a row. I never would have guessed it.

Next, I watched Thursday's night's SCRUBS which ended up being the first of a two parter. The plot revolved around the idea of faith and proof, having something to believe in whether there's tangible evidence of its existence or not. OK episode, but while it was less silly than usual, it was also less funny, too.

Next, I put on THE WILD WILD WEST and watched the second episode in the set, "The Night of the GOlden Cobra." The guest star was Boris Karloff, and while the story had really bad plot holes and was rather sloppily written, we got an entire opening scene with Robert COnrad going shirtless, always spectacular to see and made more so now in superb color.

As tonight is rather bereft of worthwhile things to watch for me apart from '24,' I'll finish off the other two episodes on this first disc by the end of the evening.

Yeah, I ended up calling under the guise of the "thank you" follow-up (not really a guise, but as my way to lead in to asking about casting), and at first the producer couldn't find his wife, who had all of the casting stuff...then he came back and asked what particular character I had read for...and then after he went back again to find his wife, he came back and told me that "All of the roles have not been cast, but that the director should be making final decisions by this afternoon...and that's all I can tell you."  Then he gave that little "I'm being cleverly ambiguous" laugh and we said our good-byes...

So, at this point, I don't know if he was just being crazy or if he was doing a big wink in my direction...

And at this point, I don't care -- I just wanna know one way or the other!  ::)

I have managed to accomplish nothing here today at the office. Go figure. It's 80 degrees out and I'm sitting here with no deadlines until sometime next week when I get back from Atlanta. Plus, I'm already at the point where I won't be finishing many of the cases I have anyway. It's a bit difficult for me to get all excited about someone's case when I'm just going to hand it off to someone else.

I'll be trying something different, regarding dinner for tonight.

When people fry chicken, the chicken is cut into pieces.

When turkey is fried, and it's a fad these days that requires a huge pot filled with oil and is done outside (and can be very dangerous), the turkey is fried whole.

Why?

I mean, really, is it all about being able to present the turkey at the table, whole, so the head of the family can pull this production number (a la "Be Our Guest") in carving the bird?

What's kicking this into gear is a trip to the store a couple of nights ago, where der B found a couple of turkey thighs and decided he wanted me to cook up said thighs for dinner sometime soon.

So, isn't it logical that frying said thighs would work, just like frying chicken?

The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook has a very simple dredge recipe, and instructions for frying chicken with said dredge.  Seems to me that substituting one bird for the other should work.

One item that isn't going to find it's way into my kitchen very soon is the anti-griddle. (http://www.cuisinetechnology.com/antigriddle.html)

Der Brucer has Robber Bridegroom on vinyl, but not on CD.

My bet is that the CD producers simply copied the notes and stuff from the original LP jacket, then added some bonus tracks without updating the info.

In other news...

After I left Toby & Dylan - and their fellow Corgi friend, Molly - I headed on down to 23rd Street to get my hair cut.  And I happened to arrive at a time when there was no waiting, so I was in and out the barber chair in about 20 minutes.

Then I took the A Train up to 50th Street, made a stop at the bank, then decided to walk up Broadway for a bit.  And, lo and behold, I ended up at 74th and Amsterdam, a.k.a. Levain Bakery.  Today's choice: oatmeal raisin.  :)   And since I happened to walk by Pour, I went ahead and picked up a couple of bottles of wine (a Cotes du Rhone, and a Pinor Noir).

Then it was back on the 1 Train at 79th, and once I got up to street at 145th, I came across one of the abeulas who was selling tamales, and champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate).  And since I had not yet decided on dinner... So, one chicken with red chile, one pork with green chile, and a cup of the champurrado.  -And all for just $3.00!  Good, cheap eats!  Real good!

In my experience, the only place to get real and real good pastrami is in a deli.  It's usually the first sandwich I order when I go to a deli for the first time.  Always a good litmus test.

Well I rode my bike for 4 blocks! Lol, it's a start. Actually I was worried I hadn't put enough air in the tires so I didn't want to ride it until I can take it in and get it serviced.  I have 4 months. I really can do this if I want to but holy moly on rye am I out of shape!

One of my friends has been riding the whole thing for 15 years. She's a lawyer but she and her husband used to have a bike shop, so she knows all about it. She's excited I want to try it and said if I can go 25 miles in a stretch, I can do it.   That sounds like a very very long way, but as of right now, I'm going to try it. And if I can get in shape enough to ride 145 miles in 2 days (the 2 days I want to ride) I will be looking good!

Well, I'm off (always have been...a little ;)). Anyway, tonight, I start house-sitting for my sister.  She and my niece (her daughter) and a friend of my sister's since college went to Vegas for the week.  They don't come back until Saturday morning at about 2:30 am.  Fortunately, I didn't have to drive them at 5:00 am, this morning to the airport and I don't have to pick them up from the airport.  But I need to stay at their house.  My sister and niece have three cats that have different food schedules/brands, so it all must be coordinated.  I still need to go to my house and take care of my cat, but she's spent time alone, so that shouldn't be a problem.  Also, my sister has a computer, so I'll be able to log on anytime. :) AND they have a wide/flatscreen TV!!  I can watch some DVDs in the proper aspect ratio!!  It'll be like going to the movies, but at home...well, my sister's home. :D

RE: tonight's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

I also like that we get to see each pair twice before voting. But i still wish they would revert back to season one voting, as this year and last the public has too much control. I think it should be 50% voting from the judges and 50% from the public.

My favorite is still apolo.

But i was so impressed by 2 couples tonight.

Heather mills. And billy ray.

Bill ray was so far beyond the dreck he showed last week. I just could not believe it.

And heather was so m uch better as well. She was better than many of the other dancers. And got great scores!

They have been when I've flown in them, but that's because the doors are off so the cameraman can hang out of the door and shoot.

One time the tail rotor conked out. We were flying through downtown Atlanta, and came dangerously close to the Coca Cola tower. I could see startled faces in the windows. The pilot was able to get the motor started again and we landed immediately. I didn't even know anything was wrong---I just thought he was fliyng kind of close. The cameraman was the one who told me we'd almost bought the farm!

I really can't figure out how their shipping worls. Sometimes I get things remarkably quickly. Other times, I get a prompt shipping notice, and it takes almost two weeks to get here. At any rate, I cracked open the SHirley Temple DVD set, and took out one of my all-time favorites, THE BLUE BIRD. It looks smashing. Oh, perhaps a little dark in some shots, but the color is great and apart from a speck or two, very clean print with no scratches at all.

Yep, those introductory sequences are still the black and white ones we've been seeing for years. I guess the color separations have forever been lost. I don't think that early portion was meant to copy THE WIZARD OF OZ, especially since the end sequences after the children return are still in color.

Next, I watched another episode of THE WILD WILD WEST - "The Night of the Raven." This was another of the popular Dr. Loveless episodes with Michael Dunn doing his usual excellent job as the evil doctor.

Phyllis Newman also guest starred as an American Indian princess captured by Dr. Loveless so her tribe would declare war on the US.

At one point, Dr. Loveless sings a song in harmony with his female accomplice, but though it's clearly Michael Dunn doing his own singing, I'd be willing to bet Phyllis Newman dubbed the voice of the female accomplice. It sounded just like Phyllis.

Jose, I think you're reading your good fortune today too broadly.  It's not just that you should get out of your apartment more often.  It's that you should visit US more often - like maybe drop by for a visit on a rehearsal break this Sunday while Amy and the other brunch guests are here, probably from noon to 2:30 or so.

I got my Last Starfighter CD---just in time!

We were listening to it as we sorted the laundry. I don't remember the exact lyrics, but when the 2nd or 3rd song came on and the title character was singing about having to replace 30 year old wiring and fuses and such, my DH said "I like it already"! It probably seemed like "This Is Your Life" to him!

I am looking forward to giving it a good listen in my car tomorrow (where I do most of my listening!) but so far it's great!

Right now, brunch attendance is looking like seven people plus two corgis.  If the attendees could inform me of any dietary restrictions, that would be great.

Amy, just confirming, will your DH be coming to brunch?  Anyone else from your group?

Yes indeed, and he's really looking forward to it! Peter will probably be spending time with his family since he's been so busy this week.

Any possibility of Vixmom or T-Punk and Rodzinski coming?

Toby was on the left and is the older of the two dogs.  BTW, Toby will bark (unthreateningly and with friendliness) until you get into the living room.  He will be a trifle loud, but the barking stops soon enough and morphs into a continuous search for the most likely guest to drop food, only to resume when the intercom rings again and the process starts again.

I can't believe there's no post yet from DR Cason.

Well, I wish I had something to post...

I went out to go to the Grove to find some things for Heather's Easter gift (the trip ended up being a bust -- more waiting...the CD I was looking for doesn't come out until tomorrow and the book I was looking for of course they conveniently didn't have, so I'll have to look elsewhere)...

On the way, my mom called and urged me to give the SDMT people another call (it was nearing 5 PM), and when I did, I got the male producer again and he was saying they had yet to hear back from the director...but that I was free to keep calling, though they only call the people who they cast...

So, still no word -- I am going to call yet again tomorrow morning...

And then, I am hoping they are willing to talk about housing with me, because all of this time I could be using to arrange something if I knew definitely is being whittled away (they said they were only going to provide housing for Equity -- but most of the people they are casting are going to be from the SD area...and so I'm hoping they may be willing to make a deal -- especially since I've been waiting for them).

ARGH!

Why do they not call the people who they do not cast??! It sounds like there were not that many there with you so would it not kill them to take 2 minutes to deliver the news rather than let you keep waiting...but thats just me and I'm nice.

My opinion, for whatever it's worth - don't call back anymore.  You've made two calls - they know you're interested in finding out.  Now you just have to put it in the hands of fate - if you get the call, great - if you don't, you're not a nudge.  Making the extra call isn't going to get you the part and it makes you seem too needy.

As long as people respect deadlines -- or at the very least, let you know that your wait is going to be worth it (not even in the sense of "getting the part" in this case - but just getting some kind of closure).

My mom and I have had a discussion about how we are willing to wait in ridiculously long lines as long as we KNOW that we'll get whatever it is that we want on the other side.

Like waiting at the financial aid office at the college...as long as when you get up to the window and they don't tell you that there was one little form or something you needed to get signed, I will wait til Kingdom Come if need be...though if Kingdom Come came, I guess I wouldn't need to be waiting at the financial aid office.

...yikes, I just re-read what I wrote and am cringing.

I'm the same way.  When I buy something on-line like on eBay, it doesn't matter too much to me how long it takes to get it in the mail...just as long as I get it and it's in the condition that was described, or better.  I see so many negative feedback comments left that say stuff like "I paid for this last week and it's not here yet!!"  And then they make a personal comment that's totally unnecessary. :P
