Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a Latin rhythm to them, and now it is time for you to post until the Latin cows come home.

And the word of the day is: IDIOPATHY!

George and der Brucer sitting in a tree like so much fish - they certainly haven't been posting while they've just been sitting there for the last FORTY-FIVE minutes.

I watched a couple of TV shows from last night, and was going to watch last week's "Lost," but I got distracted. I was on Amazon.co.uk, looking at getting a CD for my niece (her birthday is in April) and I found that the Dawn French series "Murder Most Horrid (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00113NWW8/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE)[/b]" is being released on DVD!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!! It's how I first discovered Dawn French, and then French and Saunders, then AbFab, and then a whole bunch of other British TV shows. But this is what started it all for me. :D It's not being released until March 10, so I have to wait...but I WILL!! ;D

A Question for BK and Anyone...has anyone else seen this show? What did you think? I saw it on PBS and instantly fell in love with it.
-
And now, I'm off to sleep. Good night, BK and any guests. :)

It seems two incumbent Maryland Congressmen are being unseated in yesterday's primary.
A centrist Democrat was unseated by a radical left challenger because:
he had initially voted to support the war in Iraq.
A centrist Republican was unseated by a far-right challenger because:
he voted in favor of setting a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.
He has also faced intense criticism from opponents over immigration - they accused him of supporting blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants, which he says isn't true. He has backed legislation to expand existing temporary-visa programs that would help provide workers for agriculture and the seafood and tourist industries. NOTE: He had Bush's endorsement.
His reputation for being too Green hurt him with developers, and his support for a woman's right to choose, stem cell research and gay rights makes him anathema to the bible thumpers.
So - two long term centrists each get the heave-ho from their extreme wing-nuts.
The net result - a schizophrenic electorate votes for even more polarization in Washington.

***GOOD NEWS VIBES*** for DR Jane's DMIL
Good news about the return of DR Tomovoz's computer!
Lovely card for DR TCB, courtesy of DearReaderLaura DR!

We used to enjoy "Murder most Horrid" DR George.
Our current viewing includes the 1990's series from Scotland "The High Life" - Alan Cummings (and I've not been a fan of what I've seen of his more recent performances).

Wow, the unusually-titled musical THE SLUG BEARERS OF KAYROL ISLAND at the Vineyard seems to have gotten great reviews from the most important theater critics.

The bad weather has finally hit Manhattan. It snowed last night and now it's raining (so the snow will be gone soon). It's supposed to be in the high 40s today and tomorrow is supposed to be clear and bright for Val Day.
Speaking of which, we will celebrate by going to a screening of What's Up Doc at Chelsea Clearview Cinemas (Where Dreams Come True). There is a pre-show hosted by
Hedda Lettuce (http://www.hedda.com/)
and the chance to win "fabulous" door prizes (no doors, though just door prizes).
It will be fun me thinks. I haven't seen What's Up Doc since it first came out in 1972.

Belated comment on yesterdays TOD, fave Bernstein songs are DREAM WITH ME, I am Easily Assimilated(altho all the irony of the lyric was lost on my 10 year old mind 1st time I heard it)America, (+the mambo) and Take Care of this House......Re politics mentioned by Der brucer, I think it is going to get worse before it gets better; And tho I've been to many prayer meetings since the 70's-none in the last 10 years-and mass, of course(I'm RC), I've never actually seen anyone thump a bible; I've seen melon thumping at the supermarket, but the only b-thumping I've ever seen was in Elmer Gantry.......BK Quest for the Day: Could you ask Jason Graae, my favorite boy singer(a non pejorative-Bryn Terfel is # 2 fave boy singer)when he will next be performing in Chi; An NYC trip is not on the books for this year, but I think I could make the windy city, If I knew in advance Mr G would be there.

First of all, i want to wish a very Happy Birthday to the ever gorgrous MISS KIM NOVAK

Wednesday morning greetings! Back to work today - the weather is much improved. Driving isn't too bad, but walking is tricky - sidewalks and parking lots are still very icy.
Today is my first 2008 brownbag lunch for nonprofit folks, so my workday began at Kroger buying cookies and chocolate. At least I don't have to worry about the guest speaker showing up, because it's MOI. I'm doing a database demo, so let's hope all the AV works as it should.
-
Good morning, all! I love New York on snowy mornings: it's quiet and, except for the occasional scrape of a a shovel against concrete, it's serene and the dark sky makes it seem earlier than it is. I snuggled up to my pillow until around 9 am, and then I got out of bed, showered, moved the bed about the apartment trying various places until I decided it was best where it had been, and now I'm all caught up on posts.
Last night was a lousy tv night, so around 9:30 I decided I wouldn't wait up for LAW & ORDER: SVU. I did watch on Channel 21 an episode of ROSEMARY AND THYME, which seems a weak mystery series although I love Felicity Kendall. I read a bit from a selection of Jane Austen's letters and went to bed.
Today, more on The Lady Of The Slipper and waiting for a delivery from Staples.

And the word of the day is: IDIOPATHY!

Good morning!
Chilly and rainy this morning. Looks to be clearing just a bit at the moment, but we need the rain so much that I will NOT complain. We were 14 inches below normal last year, and this year we're creeping already toward being 2 inches below normal and it's only mid February.
-
Today I'll be watching MARGOT AT THE WEDDING with pen and pad in hand. It's only 91 minutes, so depending on the bonuses, I might actually have time today to see something for fun.
-
And I'll do more ODD COUPLE episodes while I cook and eat lunch. Looking forward to them, of course.

I love "The Apartment" and have not seen it for years. I think i may have mentioned it before, but people forget how good Fred McMurray was at drama, and this role was such a contrast to the Flubbber movies he was doing for Disney.
I, too, like, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" Ms. Hepburn and Mr. Tracy have some great scenes together and good dialogue. I've always loved the score and counter melodies that DeVol used. And the film has style. It has its weaknesses but is still worth viewing.
-
Beautiful day here in the desert. I think I shall go for a walk.
Luckily for me, the doctor recommended a walk every day for the cholesterol and bone density. :)
-
I also love THE APARTMENT and greatly enjoy GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, but I'll hold out on both to one day get HD transfers rather than upgrading what I've got now.
The theme from THE APARTMENT was one of most ambitious piano selections I ever mastered (I had only a small talent for playing the piano).

Beware of Valentine E-Cards. On the news last night and on my internet news listing this morning. a warning that there's one going around with a virus. That's not very loving!

Ditto! And I still find the long, continuous take of Poitier talking with his character's father an amazing scene ...
-
I saw DR CASON last night here at HHW.....wonderful.
I just realized which actor HAD the perfect persona for ZUBRICK - in addition to Mr Murphy and Mr Manlove from PNFOS....it is Mr Steve Franken.

There was a lot of Latin in WAR OF THE SATELLITES.......

Tomorrow is St Valentine's Day......famous for the massacre.

To any Latin from Manhattan - have you ever been embarrassed when you're in a smart cafe?
See Madama La Songa!!

Vini, Vidi, Vinci?
Veni, Vidi, Vici.....
-
I love the song of the day, DR ARNOLD BROCKMAN....and I love hearing the stories of the audience reaction to its first performances....and the demand for encore after encore.....
Irving Berlin......
I didn't like The Apartment for many years, avoided it, in fact, because Mr Jack Lemmon can get on my last nerve. I watched it last year, and Shirley MacClaine won me over.....she and Mr McMurray.
Why does Billy Wilder have a character named Sheldrake in several movies, I wonder?

It's often hard to separate the Latin spellings from the Italian.
A favorite bastardization:
Veni, Vidi, Vini -- I came, I conquered, I drank wine!
-
Madama La Songa!!
Or Lea Salonga?
-
And there is the South Carolina state motto:
Dum Spiro Spero -- "While I breathe, I hope".
The phrase is attributed to Cicero, according to Wikipedia, and is often associated with the Scottish Clan McClellan.
-
Mammy didn't like the idea, DR RLP.
Yes, NEW Pwoject Wunway tonight.....
There are five designers left and, from what I can glean from the promos, TWO (count 'em 2) will be eliminated tonight.
-
And, of course, I have my own Latin motto:
Oopsius daisius!
-
Among the few things I remember from two years of Latin in high school (lo, these many decades ago):
"Mica, mica parva stella"
That's "Twinkle, twinle little star," by the way.
-
I read somewhere(cant remember where)that one day , Fred MacMurray had taken the family to Disneyland; A woman asked him if he were FM; He answered yes,, expecting I suppose, a request for an autograph. Instead, she hauled off and slapped him across the face because he'd been so mean to Miss MacLaine in the APARTMENT>
-
And let's not forget the MGM logo:
"Ars Gratia Artis"
"Art for Art's Sake"
-
I remember reading that after THE APARTMENT, McMurray swore he would never again play a dark character, hence, his continuation of MY THREE SONS and the progression of sunny Disney movies.
-
Now, I have the den to clean, and I have some new equipment in the home theater I need to fiddle with. Then, a quick check of the mail, and beginning of lunch preparation.

Very nice Latin being posted here today.
It killed the Romans, you know.
Actually, I think what done the Romans in was the influx of Britannic and Germanic phrases. True Romans didn't want the language bastardized, but the "new" Romans became so plentiful that the true Romans were unable to vocalize their needs (loath as they were to use the assimilated homonyms, antonyms and whatnot) and the language simply died with them.

DR Ben - Hmm... Thanks for the head up on "What's Up Doc?" tomorrow night at Chelsea Clearview Cinemas ("Where Dreams Come True"). What else was there for them TO do? After all, a day's repast, apart from figs and wine, was such esoterica as peacock's eyeballs, rotted meats and frequent visits to the vomitorium.
Surely that's worthy of a bon mot or three.

Yes, there is a moral crisis. All these super-highly paid athletes making their fame and fortune from the benefits of performance-enhancing DRUGS must PAY for their misdeeds and lack of "sportsmanship".

So suddenly, it's Spring... have you noticed all the magnolias and fruit trees all decked out for whatever Prom they're attending? Whoosh, just overnight - a few 80-degree days, and badabing, we got Spring. First flowering almost always give me a touch of melancholy. I do know now what I didn't know then. Last year, I mulled this strange juxtaposition of great joy and deep melancholy. I wrote a poem. Here it is:
Spring Equinox, and suddenly to plant
Snapdragons is the pulsing need. To limb
The dogwood, liberate the force
Of blossoms, holding tight to their perfume.
A robin trills, and starlings dart and nest
Above a predatory eye. She watches
So patiently, so carefully. She watches,
And I watch her, and dig and hoe and plant
And listen to the songs of starling nest-
Construction. There, the starlings on a limb
Pause, watching me. Familiar, faint perfume,
A fragment of last summer’s fragrant force
That caught me, held me, holds me still. I force
Myself back to the task. So still, she watches,
Undeterred by memory’s perfume.
Her life, her focus is all Now. I plant
Snapdragons underneath a dogwood limb
In last year’s garden. And my need to nest
Is haunted by a past, best, lasting nest…
A fragrant remnant, lingering, a force
Like pain remaining in a severed limb.
The feral forest folk do not wind watches,
Do not mind time in tiny ticks. Each plant
Unfurls its life in present tense. Perfume
Of seasons past, regret holds no perfume
For busy starlings, building this year’s nest,
Each Spring a new beginning. As I plant,
Remembered seasons hold me flightless. Force
Of gravity has lots of help. The watches
Are winding down in weary eye and limb
And sore, scarred, pulsing heart. Remembered limb
Still aches - a voice, a face, a form perfume
My time-bound winding down. And yet, who watches
The tearing-down of an abandoned nest?
From ashes, embers, memories, some force
Ignites this present, pulsing need to plant.
The starlings leave their limb; their need to nest
Intoxicates the cat - pungent perfume,
A feral force. She watches. And I plant.
-

As for Ask BK Day...
Are mid-week matinees a rarity out there in L.A. and/or the West Coast in general? And/or do they start at different times? (other than 2:00pm or 3:00pm)
I only ask since I've have a couple of friends in town over the past couple of weeks from L.A. and San Diego, and they've all seemed sort of surprised that the Wednesday matinees here in NYC are at 2:00pm. "Hmm... Well, I guess I should change my lunch reservation from 1:30."
Just wondrin'.

Ron! So glad to see ya!
I've got wads of errands to get to, but I'm just dawdling... appreciating the easy pace of this here board. Just visiting mah pals...
I've been teaching a dialects clay-ass at a local drama school... nice students, but I'm irritated by the Boss Lady. Sits behind me in every class, interrupts me constantly, countermands my instructions, talks with her 'assistant' while my kids are working. Sheesh.
-
Anyhow, better get to the library. So nice visiting with y'all. Back soon.

Hello, hello!

A Question for BK and Anyone...has anyone else seen this show? What did you think? I saw it on PBS and instantly fell in love with it.

Murder Under the Bushes, Murder Beneath the Apple Tree, Murder in the Magnolia--that sort of thing, Ron??
;)

DR Jose's story about the Magnolia Bakery reminds me of a fellow I knew in LA. Said fellow had a nursery on Sawtelle Blvd in WLA. We had a mutual acquaintance, Carmen, a woman with a rather patrician air. Said fellow used to say that when Carmen would shop at his nursery suddenly the other customers always what Carmen wanted. They had no interest in that item until Carmen wanted it. Now, am I surprised that Jose can enter a perfectly deserted bakery, then suddenly find himself in a crowd? Noooo. Not at all.

Substituting the "patrician air" with....the "appearance" of a super-satisfied customer?

A very interesting question, which I don't know the answer to. When I was growing up here and certainly all throughout the sevenites and eighties, every theater had a Wednesday matinee at two (my early theater going days it was, of course, two-thirty, as it was in NY). But, I don't recall seeing listings for Wednesday matinees in quite some time - everyone does the Sat, Sun matinees for sure (when I did the play at the Taper, that was the ONLY theater in town of that size that played a matinee on Sunday).
-
I slept late (until ten), which I needed. Now I have to de-groggify so I can do things, like returning Pogue's call and shipping a big package.
-
Substituting the "patrician air" with....the "appearance" of a super-satisfied customer?
;D
No, the other customers would want the items Carmen looked at even before she bought them. I always figured the other customers must think that Carmen had taste and, therefore, they wanted what she wanted.
-
shipping a big package
I always appreciate a UPS man with a big package!
-
Tomorrow is St Valentine's Day......famous for the massacre.

Only UPS?
-
If you want a big package, get it UPS!
-
So... The "roomie" received a big bouquet of flowers - red rose and white lilies - from her boyfriend/quasi-roomie. Right now, they are sitting on the dining room table looking all pretty and fragrancing the air quite nicely. However, I suspect that both of them will be working today, tomorrow (Valentine's Day) and Friday as usual, which probably means that neither of them will be be here to change the water in the vase. -And even if they are here to change the water in the vase, neither of them will do it. So... We (the royal "We") are wondering if we should just go ahead and dump the flowers once the arrangement starts to wilt and rot and get smelly. Hmm...

...And since I had noticed a bit of a wading pool starting to form in our backyard/patio, I headed out into the rain to unclog the drain. Thankfully, all that required was just lifting the grate and shoving some of the dirt and NYC-soot away, and now the water level in the backyard is back to normal. I guess I'll have to call our New Zealand gardener to check it out once the weather dries out.

:D It's not being released until March 10, so I have to wait...but I WILL!! ;D
Unfortunately NetFlix doesn't have this series yet. Please remind me when it comes out so I can check back with NetFlix. We haven't seen it yet.
There is mention of Tony Dow directing. Is it possible there are two Tony Dow's? I don't see this show listed under the child actor Tony Dow's list of directing credits. I do find it listed under Tony Dow ll.

Yesterday, whilst traveling around the DelMarVa peninsula in our motorcar, der Brucer and I discussed (among many many many other things) why tapas bars, in the tradition of tapas bars in Spain, cannot exist in Los Angeles.
We're blaming the Board of Health, or whatever it's called.
The idea of tapas bars in Spain is, after all, that people drop by one place, sample the tapas that that bar specializes in, then move on to the next bar (while another crowd of people comes in and replaces the first).
Can't happen in Los Angeles.
For one thing, in Spain people bar-hop by walking from bar to bar. People don't walk in Los Angeles. They drive. And drinking and driving don't mix too well. Not when what is being drunk is alchoholic, at least. (Diet Coke is another matter.)
Second, bar owners in Los Angeles (and other cities across the nation) much prefer their customers to stay at their bar, and try to do everything they can to keep their customers from wandering off.
Unfortunately, the one thing the bar owners cannot do is serve food. And this is where the Board of Health comes in.
It is illegal for a bar to serve food without spending gazillions on proper refrigeration and food storage and cooking and licencing and such. Most bar owners these days don't have the capital to do that. So instead they just serve booze and maybe some munchies that are salty and get the customers thirsty.
Now, der B and I can remember when there were bars that did serve food, flying under the Board of Health's radar or something. You could go to Floyds in Long Beach, or the Stud in the Silverlake area, or other places and get a burger or fries to go with that beer (or Diet Coke). But the Board of Health has closed those operations down. The food simply had to go.
Floyds doesn't even exist any more, and the Stud goes by the name of Faultline. (I'd post a link, but this is a family site. :o No, really, Faultline's website asks if you're over eightteen and allowed to look at exciting thrilling disgusting pictures in your area, and you have to click an "OK" before you can access those wonderful enthralling unseemly pictures.)
Well, that's essentially why there are no authentic tapas bars in Los Angeles.
End of story.

Wasn't that the premise of this film?

Hmm...
Me, I'd leave 'em there and add a card reading "A Portent of the Future".

Were there buttcheeks involved?
-
Wasn't that the title of the long-lost Kurt Weill epic... The Stud in the Silverlake?
-
Hmm... That's interesting, DR SWW - I know there are some localities where bars are required to serve some sort of food in order to get fully licensed as a bar. The local government wants people to have some sort of sustenance available to the imbibers to help them "control" their bodies' alcohol absorption.

"All right, if you say the UPS package was left here on the table, I'll believe you. But where is it now?"
-
Me, I'd leave 'em there and add a card reading "A Portent of the Future".
Or,
"As these flowers go, thus will go the days of your lives..."
-
I think the moment the flower arrangement starts to smell is the moment it gets magically transferred to the roomie's room...with the door closed behind it.
-
Me, I'd leave 'em there and add a card reading "A Portent of the Future".
Well, we - not the royal "we" - have already agreed to put them in her room if and when it comes to that.
-
From Jose:
But have you eaten at Magnolia Bakery?
;D Yes, I believe I have also eaten there.

Such as... The Entire State of Delaware!
There are apparently just three bars in the entire state that are not connected to restaurants. The Double L (http://www.doublelbar.net/) here in Rehoboth Beach is one of them. Those three bars have slipped through some grandfathering system, and pre-date the restaurant clause.
(I've included the link because the people at the Double L aren't nearly as imaginative prurient lubricious indecent as those at Faultline. Also, I like promoting local places.)

BASTA!

There's some fine Latin goin' on around here.
-
I have shipped a big package, I have bought some toiletries, I have visited the Gap (buying some clothes for the first time in over two years), I have done some other errands, and now I am home, but thinking about lunch, since I won't be eating again (must lose ten to twenty pounds in the next three months).
-
BASTA!
In the HWW Dictionary: Chincy BASTA -- Latin for Chincy Bassa -- Latin Plural: Chincy BASTUS
-
And speaking of Latin, there are also:
Carpe Diem: seize the day
Carpe Nactum: seize the night (from Jim Steinman and Michael Kunze's Tanz Der Vampire)
Carpe Scrotum: well...you know. ;)
Actually, the middle one is Carpe noctem, and if this is how it stands in the Vampire Dance, shame on them for their lousy scholarship and poor Latin grammar!

And I'm sure Some appreciates the clothes, since it gets quite nippy at this time of year.

DR elmore, where did you end up placing your bed, in the same location as the previous bed?
-
Conversely, "Caesar and Cleopatra" was on TCM yesterday evening.
YAW-W-W-W-N!
And what a cast!
Yeah...I watched "Caesar & Cleopatra too and quite enjoyed it. I like Shavian wit myself.
I also watched A THOUSAND CLOWNS which was fun despite the compulsion that had to open the play up with lots of silly-ass 60's montage-ish sequences of bike-riding and running through New York Streets. When they stuck with the apartment and the play, it was fun.
I stuck with TCM all night...watching half of THE RED SHOES before I packed it in and went to bed. I've seen it several times before. Anton Walbrook is really good.
-
Actually, the middle one is Carpe noctem, and if this is how it stands in the Vampire Dance, shame on them for their lousy scholarship and poor Latin grammar!
You're right, it's an "o" in noctum, not an "a"...my bad. :)

it will be a welcome relief

The flowering pear trees are in bloom all over the city. It's about 2 weeks later than normal because of a cold snap we had, but they are quite lovely to see. Perhaps DRLaura will see one and post a picture.

The rain stopped late this morning, but the overcast skies have never left us. Maybe it's going to rain some more tonight. We're still in pretty dire need of it.
-
DR elmore, where did you end up placing your bed, in the same location as the previous bed?
Nope. The room's quite different now.
-
I watched two ODD COUPLE episodes while I cooked and ate lunch. The first had Felix's daughter going out with a guy who was in a reform school, but who Oscar had taken under his wing.
-
I think my head just may explode today
:o Please don't! I just sent you a letter...actually, it's a check and a letter. ;)

DR George, it was worded badly and you don't need to know. :)
-
DR George, it was worded badly and you don't need to know. :)
Oh. Okay. I'll trust you. :-*
-
The second involved Felix and Oscar investing money in a Japanese restaurant, but when Felix objected to the messy kitchen, everyone walked out and Felix, Oscar, and Murray had to try to salvage things. Pat Morita played the owner of the establishment.
-
Then I watched MARGOT AT THE WEDDING. Very off-putting comedy-drama about the many dysfunctional relationships in a family with the two sisters played by Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Great cast: Jack Black, John Turturro, Cirian Hinds. But lots of sniping and making up, and even at 92 minutes, it seemed uncomfortably long.
And right after the Paramount/Vantage logo, this green haze descended on the picture, and the entire film was further distressed with this overly processed look to everything. In the bonus features, it showed how bright and sunny everything was while they were filming, so to obliterate this bright look, they laid on this green film that sucked any happiness or energy out of the movie. Even the joking around that Jack Black did was soured by the look of the cinematography.
-
Other than the two trailers (and some previews for other Paramount pictures), the only bonus in the set was a conversation between director Noah Baumbach and his wife and the co-star of the film Jennifer Jason Leigh. They both adored Nicole Kidman, of course, and each praises the other to the skies in terms of writing/directing and acting, the very antithesis of the comments we see the characters making to each other in the movie. This gave me my best laugh of the afternoon. If only those poor miserable people in the film had been given an ounce of encouragement that these two give one another in the bonus features! Of course, then, there would have been no movie.

For those of you have have CBS shows you're fond of, here's the skinny on their returns:
Monday sitcoms How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men are each returning with nine new eppys on March 17. (Rules of Engagement doesn't return until April 14, with a half-dozen.)
On March 24, CSI: Miami airs the first of eight new shows, while CSI: NY returns April 2 with seven, and CSI original flavor resurfaces April 3 with six.
Cold Case returns March 30 with five episodes, Criminal Minds kicks off seven new ones on April 2, and Trace is back on April 3 with six.
On April 4, both Ghost Whisperer and Numbers fans get the first of six, while Moonlighters are getting four new episodes starting April 11. NCIS is back April 8 with seven, and Shark's got four to unfurl at a to-be-determined date.
-
...
NCIS is back April 8 with seven...
:D This is one program that Richard and I make a point of watching together.

More exquisite photos from DR Laura - oh, that blue, blue sky!
-
I'm here, I'm here, and caught up. The past few days I've been feeling quite crappy. I think it's the lack of good sleep and my reduced food intake the last few weeks. The DP and I started the Weight Watchers program over 3 weeks ago, and while I have 44 points a day, I always come up 10 points or more ahead, thus, not eating like I should. Last night I had a good sleep, I stayed home from work (except I did a funeral this morning) and started to eat better and am finally feeling a bit better.

CANDY MAN CAN'T
NAKED COWBOY SUES OVER SINGIN' M&M
By KATI CORNELL
February 13, 2008 -- Times Square's Naked Cowboy is trying to take a $6 million bite out of a giant candy corporation, charging it stole his identity by dressing an animated blue M&M in his skimpy trademark outfit.
The nearly nude street performer, whose real name is Robert Burck, has his tighty whities in such a bunch over a massive video billboard showing the candy in a white hat, boots, guitar and underwear that he's filed suit against the mighty Mars candy corporation.
The case of Naked Cowboy vs. The Men From Mars will be heard in Manhattan federal court.

My brownbag lunch program went fine - about a dozen hearty souls showed up. After my own lunch and a brief time here at my desk, I went back upstairs for an informational meeting about our new health insurance option. My brain is fried and now I have to go home and explain the health insurance to Richard.

DR Matthew, when I was on WW a few years ago, I got only 15-18 points per day. I was always hungry.

I, of course, am most thrilled that MOONLIGHT will film four new episodes to close out its first season. And that sounds a lot like a sure pick-up for a second season in the fall. Hooray!

I will, of course, post other networks' return schedules as soon as I see them on-line.

Now, I have some writing to do so let me get to that.

Luckily for me, the doctor recommended a walk every day for the cholesterol and bone density. :)
A daily ritual:
Walk to McDonald's
Order a large-fries, "Supersized, please", to go.

I don't know if the laws in Washington have changed in the last few years, but when I used to bartend; the law required 60 / 40. 60% food sales and 40% liquor sales. Of course, many inventive bar owners, required that soft drinks be rung up as food items.
-
Among the few things I remember from two years of Latin in high school (lo, these many decades ago):
"Mica, mica parva stella"
That's "Twinkle, twinle little star," by the way.
You never learned:
"Ubi, oh ubi, est meus sub ubi?"
(Where, oh where, is my underwear)
der Brucer
Maybe that was in Fourth Year Latin - I was a glutton for punishment!
I took third and fourth year Latin to avoid taking Chemistry and Physics - my punishment for that was to spend 6 college years in Engineering studies!

What a good day to stay home! My final filing cabinet arrived along with some storage boxes and my apartment is looking better and better. What a sad waste of taxpayer dollars and Congressional personnel time!
(a steroid hearing reference)
Ironic that the TV was bellowing forth that complaint.
I'm sure there were dozens of other congressional hearings going on today dealing with more weighty topics - it was the medias choice to sensationalize the steroid hearing, and then they bitched because it took so much coverage time. Why, FoxNews thought it was of such vital national import that they missed some commercial breaks.
der Brucer
Of course when the hearings were over, the entire FoxNews studio devolved into complete chaos - Uno showed up! All the staff, anchors, producers, and minions galore, gathered round to pet the pooch.
Uno made a complete ass of his handler/trainer. The gent was trying to get Uno to bark (usually not tough to do with a beagle) - the trainer kept making doggie baying sounds and Uno sat there patiently giving the trainer a steely stare.

I know that Latin is a fully functional language, but somehow I just can't get past the mental image of people lounging around in togas, exchanging one-liner bon mots! :)
Try reading plays by Plautus or Terrance !

I haven't seen it, George, but I'll put it in my Netflix queue. I was never an AbFab fan, but really liked Dawn French in VICAR OF DIBLEY. Thought she made it all work.
You should see her when she guests on The Graham Norton Show:

Last night I watched the special feature on the two disc edition of WEST SIDE STORY.
What were they thinking? Letting Natalie Wood pre-record Maria's songs?!?!? Almost, but not quite, as bad as Leslie Caron's original recordings of GIGI. Natalie was truly pitchy.
But, here a QUESTION: where was George Chakiris?
And a totally un-related question:
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah:" What are the drs favorite recordings of this little masterpiece?
I've grown very fond of kd lang's version.

I am now all prepared for the Hollywood Collector's Show - I'm only bringing the Kritzer books (two copies each), How To Write A Dirty Book, and MAHH - I'm completely out of Rewind, and I don't feel like lugging Writer's Block, although I'll stick one or two copies in the car, just in case. Also bringing Brain and New Guy In Town CDs, thinking about bringing a few Deceit DVDs, Nudie and Naked Space DVDs, new and older photos and I think that's about it.
-
I may have a few more LPs for sale - I've been going through the garage. I'm still unable to find one pile of them - as soon as I do, then I'll do a little listing right here at haineshisway.com

Whatever happened to our DR MBarnum review of LI'L ABNER? Did he leave Miss Laurie Mitchell and run off with one of the bodybuilders?

BK - Speaking of Valentine's Day, did you ever ship that box of Milla CD's?

Bruce, I hope you sell loads of books at the show. Do you ever read bits from them at a show?

It's February 14th here. Until the last few decades "Valentines" wer enot part of Australian culture at all. My knowledge of cards etc was from "Peanuts".
Australia switched to decimal currencey on February 14th 1966. (I don't it will catch on though)

February 13th 2008 will be an important day in the history of this country. I wonder if there was any press mention in North America of the significance of the day.

Definitely not a copyright issue.

Good Evening!
Well, my foodie-friend, Michael, and I ended up at Dean's - in DR elmore's neck of the woods - for dinner. I was in the mood for Italian, and even though I'm a fan of Dean's Square Pie, I really wanted pasta. So, I got their Buccatini and Meatballs - I was just in the mood for something basic. It was very good. Michael got their Penne Amatriciana, but got it with Fettucini instead of Penne. We both enjoyed our meals.
Afterwards, since we were in the 'hood, I walked Michael over to Edgar's Cafe where we drooled and dreamed over their dessert case. Strangely enough, we both resisted the various temptations - although, that Pumpkin Bourbon Mousse Pie looked reallllllly good. Well, then, again since we were in the 'hood, I walked Michael over to Cafe Lalo.
My last few visits to Cafe Lalo had been disappointing and underwhelming, but being the Good Enabler that I am, I felt I had to show Michael the place. Well... When we walked in, I could tell they had brightened up the lighting, spiffed up the display cases, and the vibe seemed a bit friendlier and less aloof... I decided to take a chance, so I ordered a few spumenti and quarsmali... As did Michael.
As we walked out up Broadway, we both started to sample our cookies, and, surprise of surprises, they were delicious. They were well-made and very fresh too. Totally yummy. I turned to Michael and said...
Well, that was Cafe Lalo.
-"Well, that was a mistake."
;D
*And, yes, we both walked back up Broadway to 116th before Michael headed back to his place, and I headed home. -A nice 30 block walk from Cafe Lalo.
-
Hi Michael S. Have the winds eased up in your part of the world?
If I stopped eating beans it wll. ;D
-
-And it really is quite a nice night out right now. Yes, it's cold, but it's not frigid, and both the rain and wind died down. And after cooping myself up in the apartment all day, the walk felt really good too.
-
Definitely not a copyright issue.
So why do you think that the lyrics are not shown?
-
If I stopped eating beans it wll. ;D

So, what did you do today, MBarnum?

RE: tonight's AMERICAN IDOL.
TOP 24 SPOILERS
*
*
*
For the most part i agreed with the judges.
For the first 3/4 of the show out of everybody they showed sing, i agreed with all the decisions.
There were however a few people who they put through who i have never seen (which i find quite unfair).
But the last 2 boy decisions made me furious.
Josiah (the blonde boy who lived in his car) should have gotten through IMO. They spent so much time on his backstory. And i really feel like the audience would have responded to him.
I actually totally thought he was going through.
Another i was furious about was kyle (in the last group).
I actually was not sure if they would put him through. But i 100% agree with everything simon said at the end. He was different. H e had a fabulous personality. I loved him in his original audition. And i loved his josh groban. And i don't understand how they can put through people who seem just like everybody else, over this guy.
I really believe the public would have responded to him.
And after watching those 2 eliminations i don't even feel like watching IDOL. They've already annoyed me.

DearReader Laura, today I toddled around Hollywood and West Hollywood.
First I ate at LUCKY DEVILS, which is the restaurant run by actor Lucky Vanous (best known for his Diet Coke commerial from back in the 90s and his short lived TV shows PACIFIC PALISADES and 18 WHEELS OF JUSTICE. I was pleased with the service, the wait staff were very attentive and very friendly. No attitude. No ignoring you.
The food was ok. I had a Tuna Melt, so nothing fancy.
-
After lunch (Lucky was not there today, by the way...he was sick)...I walked across Hollywood Blvd to Larry Edmund's Bookstore and purchased a few movie stills...they didn't have much that I wanted, unfortunately.
Then I walked about the boulevard for awhile and realized it was getting very chilly (I was dressed for the summer like weather of the last few days...but today was not as nice)
-
I drove back to Amoeba Records and traded in some DVDs and CDs that I had hauled down with me...got $50 in trade and did some more shopping. I really found a lot of wonderful CDs on my two different trips to that store...right now I am listening to THE BEST OF TONY HATCH AND HIS ORCHESTRA....I had never heard of him befofre, but I guess he was quite popular in the 60s and 70s...his music is great...sort of lounge music like.
Pretty much I scoured the clearence rows and just picked up a lot of stuff that sounded interesting...got some Arabic pop music, Bollywood soundtracks, several Anita Kerr Singers and The san Sebastian Strings CDs, romance songs of the 30s...just all sorts of things...and two region 2 DVDs of the AIP films THE BRAIN EATERS and RUNAWAY GIRLS.
-
Then I drove over to La Cienaga and Santa Monica where I stopped in at The Hollywood Poster Exchange. Janet Chapman, the owner, had been searching her inventory for specific stills that I was looking for and she found some great stuff...the best were some "candid" shots of my interviewee Bek Nelson with both Roger Smith and Gary Merrill on the set of CRASH LANDING as well as some scene shots of Bek and my other interviewee from that film Jewell Lain. Just finding those stills was worth the trip!
Janet is a real sweet lady and is the niece of movie music composer Albert Glasser who composed the music to ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE as well as many other drive-in classics.
-
Sounds like you're having a great time, MBarnum! ;D
-
Well, I'm now leaving work.
-
LIL ABNER last night was great fun..and of coure you could not have a more enjoyable date then Ms. Laurie Mitchell star of CALYPSO JOE and MISSLE TO THE MOON! She is absolutely one of my favorite people of all time and we just had a blast last night.
I drove (on the scary freeways) from Glendale to Northridge and visited with Laurie for a time at her home environment and played with there new bassett hound. He is only 6 months old and FULL of enery. He drives Laurie up a wall, but her husband Ron just babies him like anything! LoL!
Laurie and I ate at a really nice restauran in Sherman Oaks, which I think was called La Frita or something like that. I had salmon and Laurie had some type of steak. We split a delicious Caesar salad.
-
DR MBarnum - Sounds like you're having a great week so far, and I'm sure the next couple of days will be filled with more surprises.
-
We then drove on down to Westwood where the theatre was. It was quite a walk from the parking structure to the theater and 85 percent of the audience was well over 70! A very elderly crowd...and the place was packed to the brim. The play was lots of fun. Most of the cast did a great job with their roles...Jamie Luner without trying to be.
Cathy Rigby was Mammy Yocum was stupendous and did some wonderful acrobatics during one of the dance scenes! Robert Towers was Pappy Yocum and I don't think it could have been cast any better then him. Just great.
Eric Martsolf played Abner. I was not expecting much from him other then to look the part...after all he is from that horrid soap opera PASSIONS! But I tell you he was fantastic. He really was Abner and oh, gosh that guy has a wonderful, wonderful singing voice. And wow, he must be like 6 ft 4, at the least....and those arms. Laurie and I were both enjoying looking at him as well as listening to him.
My absolute favorite in the cast was Larry Cedar, who played Dr. Finsdale...he was so funny, and just so good in a role I had almost even forgetton was in the show.
The only low points I would give the show were Fred Willared as General Bullmoose. Normally he is an actor I really like, but he had absolutely no personality here...maybe he was under the weather or something, I don't know...he fumbled a few lines, I could tell, and he just didn't seem to be into it at all.
The other bad casting seemed to be Brandi Burkhardt (also from PASSIONS). At intermission both Laurie and I both commented that she was very dull as Daisy Mae and she did not project. However, I will say she improved 100 % in the second half. Perhaps someone had a talking to!! LOL! The second half of the show she was just fine...although her singing was really to my liking. Too Disney princess like.
The choreography seemed OK, and of course the songs are all fantastic.
All in all it was a wonderul evening and I am so glad Laurie went with me! We can't wait to do it again sometime!
-
One touching thing during the evening last night was Laurie's talking about some of the plays she did...she just lit up remembering a tour of one play in San Francisco...it only lasted 3 weeks there but she had so much fun. I think Gene Reynolds was in the play, as was my interviewee Jewell Lain.
You know, she just loved being an actress!! She had so much fun!
-
I have to say that one thing that I have really missed this trip is DR Musicguy's Hollywood tours...he always showed me the neatest places and told the best stories of his time living here.
-
Well... I received a call earlier this afternoon asking if I was available to play some auditions tomorrow and Friday for a new show - they needed to "replace" the current pianist... ;) And since I am available... Well, I should get ready for bed. My sleep schedule is still sort of a bit mixed up from Memphis, but I've also been letting myself sleep in until 11:00 the past two days, and since I have to be down at the studio to meet with the conductor at 9:30...
Goodnight.
-
Thank you for sharing your joy DR MBarnum.
I wonder if the Hatch recording is with his scaled down orchestra and arrangements. His oriiginal recordings are difficutl to find - "The Theme from The Champions" seems to available in a "thin" version.
There are a few fans of Mr Hatch at HHW.
-

Great LA report from DR MBARNUM....escort of THE QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE.
Have fun at your interviews!!!
DR TCB - I had some unpleasant dealings with IR.....so I guess it depends on what you are doing with them, or vice versa.
-
Interesting Pwoject Wunway developments that will please or infuriate you, depending on your favorite designer preference.

Now I think I will watch the second half of EL CID.
-

-
oh, and for those who might be interested (and you know who you are!)...here are the three guys who played the "after husbands"
T. J. Hoban
(http://i9.ebayimg.com/05/i/000/ab/da/ad91_1.JPG)
Christian Boeving (who I actually met about 7 or 8 years ago...man, is he tall....he was in Playgirl magazine once...or so I have heard 8) )

Will THE CLOSER be returning this summer?
What about BURN NOTICE?
These are my two favorite shows.
DR Edi told us the other day that THE CLOSER would return in July.
I have read absolutely nothing about the return date of BURN NOTICE. But I'll keep looking. I know there are several fans of it here (including me).
-
The few times that I have been there I loved the food ( not the bill ). They have great Devil's Food Cupcakes in the morning and I love their Broccoli dish :) . You were only a few blocks from my apartment!
Had I known you lived so close I would have invited you to join me for lunch DR Adriana.
The gal who makes the pastries is a friend of one of my co-workers, which is how I found out about the place.
-
I spent the first part of the evening rewatching about 75% of PRIDE & PREJUDICE (the recent film version) upconverted. Lovely as always.
-
I watched AMERICAN IDOL, too, but I can't believe I really spent an hour watching them torture the poor people who had already gone through hell on earth during those tense audition days. I really DESPISE that aspect of the show.
Yes, it's true, there are STILL people I have not heard one note out of their throats, but I guess on Tuesday we'll finally get to hear every guy and on Wednesday every girl.
I, too, was very disapppointed with the final two-guy selection; judging clearly on the basis of the clips played tonight, they chose the wrong one voice AND personality wise.
With the last two girls, they DID choose correctly. That model had a whiny, off pitch voice that reminded me of a couple of losers from a couple of seasons ago (Camille Vasquez, anyone?). The black girl had an exciting voice.
A couple of the young guys who were so upset about getting cut have time to come back and try again. Their world is not over because they didn't make IDOL at age 16.
-
I zipped through AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke or Noah, but the Valentine's Day special tomorrow did have them in a brief scene, so that should be fun.
-
Then, I put in TORCH SONG (My Joan Crawford box set came today) to see how it looked in widescreen. Color varied from scene to scene - some good, some kind of pale. The compositions looked fine in widescreen, so no problem there. Mono sound.
-
I watched about 30 minutes of TORCH SONG, and then I switched to the "making of" documentary on the film. Richard Barrios, Molly Haskell, Christina Crawford, and others commenting on Joan at the time and the film. Made for less than $1 million, and it still lost money! And that's after Joan had a smash hit the year before with SUDDEN FEAR.
-
Then I watched tonight's LAW & ORDER. Good show with a couple of good showcase scenes for Sam Waterston.
-
Page Thirteen Wicked Witch, Dorothy, and Glinda Dance!!!
-
Strangely, I STILL haven't gotten my Lana Turner DVD set. It was mailed over a week ago. Must be coming by turtle.
-
I spent the first part of the evening rewatching about 75% of PRIDE & PREJUDICE (the recent film version) upconverted. Lovely as always.
I just finished watching the Greer Garson version! Which, of course, I've owned, but had never seen. I like Garson in this better than anything else I've seen of hers, truly.
I was thinking about watching a bit of BRIDE & PREJUDICE now.
I'm very fond of the recent version.
Still, the best is the PBS version with the delightful Darcy of Colin Firth.
-
DR MBarnum, you sound like you're having a ball! Keep regaling us with tales from the city of angels!
-
Back from a meeting and shall now eat a Subway Club.
-
I keep forgetting to thank BK for introducing me to the music of THE BRASS RING...it was the perfect music for the hectic drives on the freeways the past couple of days...honestly helped keep me calm!
-
I have absolutely know idea what I am going to do tomorrow...that was the day I had set aside to interview Rad Fulton, but as he had to cancel and make a trip to San Diego I am without any plans.
If it is sunny and warm then I may go to Venice or Santa Monica. If not then I may just drive about in my rented motor car and see what Glendale and Pasadena have.
-
Oh, I know what I am doing tomorrow...I move from Glendale to Burbank as it will be time to switch hotels.
So maybe I will explore the valley a bit, instead.
BK, Adriana, or Cason, if you are up for Indian buffett in Burbank let me know. I am going to scout around for a good place to stuff myself on Thursday.
-
Hooray! No writing to do tonight, so I'm heading down to bed earlier than the past few nights.
Good night!

Today's classic eBay description department:
FRANCES FARMER
1939 color rotograve from NY Daily News.
12” x 15” newsprint. Original. Not a repro. There are some powdery, scuff marks and thin, white lines in the lower, right corner, against the dark shoulder of the dress. (See image, where area in the photo appears lighter than the actual item because of glare.)
(1939 date for this item is documented because of stories on the reverse side about The News Seventh Annual Beautiful Child Contest, which started in 1932.)
Frances Farmer was a beautiful and tragic actress who peaked in the late 1930s, then declined in the 1940s because of mental illness and alcohol. She was portrayed by Jessica Lange in the 1982 film, “Frances, the Talking Mule.”

MBarnum - glad you are having such a wonderful time. Thanks for the updates.

I gotta tell you.

No motion picture for me tonight.

Will we never get to page fourteen?

Lunch with Mr. Graae has been pushed to Monday on account of Valentine's Day.

On eBay there is currently a signed copy of the Nudie Musical soundtrack LP - the seller says it's signed by me, Cindy Williams, Debbie Shapiro, and Diana Canova. He's correct on all counts except Cindy - I signed as I sometimes do, with the Bruce above the Kimmel. He's thinking that I signed it "Bruce" and that what in fact is the Kimmel below is Cindy's signature. Anyone who's gotten anything from me signed will recognize instantly my last name. I wrote the seller.

I've been addicted to playing Funeral Quest at filesponge.net
I hope I don't fall too far behind when we go to the desert this weekend.

Wanna sit in on church choir rehearsals in Culver City? ;D

Minutus cantorum, minutus balorum, minutus carborata descendum pantorum.
So easily obtained from my signature. ;D

And where does the Naked Cowboy melt?
Wouldn't you like to know? ;)

Is singingnymph coming to the HOllywood Collector's Show this weekend?
-
Alas, no. I'm headed to Cal City with the family.

I enjoy the dune buggy rides, but not so much the freezing my ass off in the desert part.
