Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written in stone, and now it is time for you to post until the stoned cows come home.

First Post!  Hoo and Ray!

Was getting ready to post last night when I got a phone call.

Meeting at work went ok.  I had to laugh that I've said for the past 2 years that HR should not be doing payroll because it is an accounting function and in the meeting we were told that we will  stop doing pay roll because---payroll is not done by HR ---  it is an accounting function.  Duh!

Vibes to one and all!

Have a wonder filled day!

Good morning, all! The alarm rang at 6:30 but I tried to sleep for another 30 minutes. Getting out of bed was not easy this morning.

I will spend the morning downtown today: barber first, then Toyland. I have work on ROBERTA and other office business. After that, my afternoon is open, which I like.

Coffee!

BK, I agree with you completely about the musical TITANIC: vague characters, except for the obnoxious Victoria Clark character who should have had her onstage time trimmed by half, a lot of "power ballads," and a horrifyingly ugly production and stultifying direction. I think the only thing I liked was the Tunick orchestration and the end of the first act.

It was three hours of my life I could have used on something more important, like seeing another show.

Another vote here against TITANIC.  After the initial tease of the opening number (which led me to believe that it was going to be a great show), I sat bored to tears throughout.  Each number seemed endless and went no where (though I did like the one song sung by the Astors.)  I know the show and score has its fans but I'm definately not one of them.

Good morning, all.

Coffee, baby.  Coffee.

Looks like TCB and I are the score's two fans.  Yeston owes us!

I envy BK his late night breakfast, even though it wasn't at Ollie Hammond's.

Good morning, all.

I keep thinking today is Wednesday. Hope that doesn't mean this is a long week.

But I got a few more pages on the paper from hell written yesterday.

I loved most of the music from "Titanic," especially a couple of the waltzes, and found the mosaic/quilt attempt at telling a story through snippets of people's stories, rather than character development, works better in a Robert Altman movie than on stage. I found the staging cheap and the sinking of the ship laughable, but it falls on the plus side for me because of the music.

I saw a preview of "Side Show" the same day. Talk about your power ballads. Yet I loved the score of that one, too, and I'm not a power ballad fan.

Greetings from Toyland!

I am listening to the new PIPE DREAM recording, which moves the score from so-so Rodgers and Hammerstein ephemera to a higher echelon of achievement. I think the restoration of material cut from the original production, the orchestra and cast make thisa a major improvement over the old RCA OBC.

So, could somebody make this show work? And I mean by rewriting the stuff of Hammerstein's, lyrics even, that don't work?

I love those two books of Steinbeck's, and, as I mentioned recently, the Debra Winger-Nick Nolte movie.

Great minds, there, Jose. I've got a Champagne and wedding cake party tonight. Six pastry chefs and who knows how many bottles of bubbly.

Otherwise...

Last night was the first night during this somewhat whirlwind vacation of mine where I let myself get a full eight hours of sleep. And, boy, did I need it. Thankfully(?), the mist of gray covering most of San Francisco this morning helped that mission to be accomplished. -And the last thing I would want to do is navigate the streets of San Francisco during the early morning rush hour in the fog whilst trying to remember the list of turns to get to where I want to go. The fog in the fog.

Great quote from J.K. Rawling on her new book, "The Casual Vacancy." Glad I have my request in already at the library:

I was conscious when I started writing The Casual Vacancy of what I wanted it to be. I did want it to be like a Trollope or a Dickens or Mrs. Gaskell in the sense that I'm taking a small community, literally a parochial community, and trying to analyze it and anatomize it in the way that they did. I really like those 19th-century novels. That's the kind of thing I love reading.
