DR BEN - the Mayflower Hotel has been the scene of many secret assignations between FAMOUS PEOPLE.  I am surprised you didn't hear a ghost.....since we had a full moon in Aries over the weekend.

Perhaps there will be one in our room to greet us on Friday. I'll let you know if anything strange happens.

The flight turned out to be quite nice since the Southwest gate agents made sure that most of the students sat in the rear section of the plane.  There were a few strays here and there toward the front of the cabin, but, overall they were very well behaved and/or ended up falling asleep.

I fell asleep too.

Thanks for the ice cream recipe, DR John G.  I'll be trying that soon.  Very soon.

DR JoseSPiano asked about eggs.  I've never quite grasped the difference between ice cream with eggs and without.  With eggs = "custard", right?  Do they make it richer?

Not everyone uses eggs, and I think it's simply a matter of personal preference, in the same way that some people use a mixture of cream and milk. All of these affect texture. But, yes, eggs make it more custardy.

There's a woman in Ohio, I believe, named Jenni, who is gaining a natural reputation for her ice creams. She  uses cream cheese to give them an extra richness. I had one, a roasted pistachio, served to me last night and it was really thick and rich, almost too rich, but that could have been the way the friend made it.

Now, I want some ice cream.

DR John G - Are you talking about Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams?

http://www.jenis.com/

They are quite good, and, yes, some of the flavors can be quite rich. However, it's one of those pints that really does serve four. ;)

As for KINKY BOOTS...

As I said last night, I really, really, really liked the show.

Cyndi Lauper's music definitely has its roots in pop music, but there's a great theatricality to it too. And the more disco, dance inflected numbers are truly infectious. The book basically follows the original movie, and since a majority of the cast is NOT composed of chorus boys and girls in their early to mid-20s, the choreography is inventive and functional (in a good way).

I really liked the cast, although I could tell they were probably due for a well-deserved day off. The biggest surprise to me was Billy Porter who up until last night never appealed to me on stage. The few times I've seen him on stage, he's come across as too much, too big, too too. But last night, I saw an actor showing and stretching his range, as well as a singer who didn't feel the need to riff and over sing just because he could.

And then there are the shoes... The boots. Oh, The Boots!

Some photos from Saturday's festivities.

The picnic.....the theatre is across the street, and I almost got flattened by a speeding car crossing the street early in the day...

With my friend Suzanne who now lives in Dallas.  The house behind us belongs to the sister of writer Janet Flannery who was a New Yorker correspondent in Paris for decades....

Too many songs to choose from:

Blue Moon
Sing for Your Supper
Falling in Love with Love
Let Antipholus In
Manhattan
On Your Toes
Hallelujah, I’m a Bum
Moon of My Delight
At the Roxy Music Hall
It Never Entered My Mind
Where the Hudson River Flows
She Could Shake the Maracas
I’ve Got Five Dollars
Zip

"Let Antipholus In"??

Greetings from Toyland!

Hey, I can remember the lyrics.

Yes, Jose. Those are the ice creams I was referring to. And a pint of ice cream is always an appetizer portion for me.  :)

Janet Flannery aka Genet. She helped keep Alice Toklas alive after Stein's family confiscated all of Gertrude's possessions and sent Alice packing after Gertrude's death. The Gertrude Stein biography - CHARMED CIRCLE maybe? - was my first realization of the necessity of legalizing and recognizing gay relationships.

I've got Flannery's book PARIS WAS YESTERDAY, in which she writes about the infamous Papin Sisters.

DR JOSE the star of BLOODY BLODDY ANDREW JACKSON, which I liked very much, mostly because of him....is a New York guy named Eric J. Olsen.....you may have run across him in your travels.  He did LES MIZ, GREAT BRAIN, LITTLE PRINCE with USA/TheatreWorks, the first national tour of RAGTIME, HOUDINI at Goodspeed, Aladdin at the Hyperion in LA....and on and on.
Here he is....on the left....with BBAJ Musical Director Tim Brickley.
