Well, you've read the notes, the notes were swift and sure, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're dealing with the vagaries of life and cannot be bothered at this time.

I've finally finished catching up with yesterday's posts!  It took me about an hour and a half to read it all.  I was going to watch last night's episode of "Lost" afterwards, but now it's too late, so I'm going to bed.

We have a staff meeting at 9:30 in the morning.  It's not required, but I'd like to be there.  We'll see if I actually am able to get myself out of bed for the meeting.

Good night...anyone. ;)

I do not like fish - and particularly not crustaceans (especially pink ones in a white sport Coat)

Well, I fell into some luck. I will be seeing Company next Wednesday, November 1st. A friend's friend can't use her ticket so I am the lucky recipient. It's in the rear mezz of the Barrymore but it's a TDF ticket so I can live with it.

I want to see the show because it's Company but I must admit I'm beginning to tire of the concept of stripped down musicals. Bobby sitting at the piano playing and singing Being Alive seems more like a cabaret show than Company. Oh, well. We shall see. At least I'm seeing the show. I had planned on seeing it anyway and now I'm confirmed.

I will be going to Midtown on Sunday to purchase two tickets for Mary Poppins on Sunday. Don't know which dates will be available but I'll check for the cheap seats on Saturday the 18th and maybe we can see it the same night as Dear Larry and Dear Fred (sounds like I'm writing a letter). I will also be getting a ticket to Grey Gardens. Even though the reviews for Butley were not outstanding, I still want to see the show so I will probably turn Sunday into a ticket purchasing day.

Back to work!

I'm not much of a fish cooker.  Not that I have anything against fish, I just don't cook it very often.

There was one camping trip the family took, when I was a sprig/twig of a lad, up to Oregon.  My mother purchased a side of salmon, slathered it with butter and wrapped it in foil, and cooked it on a grill over an open campfire.  It was delish!

Oh my, oh my.  This is something Vixmom should check out, but possibly keep from the Vixter for a few years still.

It seems that a Brit company has had to remove a pole-dancing kit from their "Toys and Games" website, according to the Daily Mail. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=412195&in_page_id=1770)

Quote
Tesco last night denied the pole dancing kit was sexually oriented and said it was clearly marked for "adult use".

A spokesman added: "Pole dancing is an increasing exercise craze. This item is for people who want to improve their fitness and have fun at the same time."

Kinda gives the song "Being Alive" a whole new meaning, doesn't it!

J'adore le poisson, especially Salmon. I do like shrimp also. I don't cook shrimp. I order it when I eat out. I make a very simple salmon. I get a piece (big enough for two) at the supermarket and put a lemon pepper marinade on it. I let it set, prepare the fresh green beans and then bake the salmon for about 20 minutes (depending on the thickness of the cut) at 350. It is then plated with fresh green beans and wild rice (I LOVE wild rice). I sound almost like a chef. It's all a ploy. I actually only cook because I have to eat. I would be a terrible chef.

BK - Maybe you should have reached Harold Wheeler through the ABC television show DANCING WITH THE STARS? He's their music director/conductor.

Re: FISH - I love to chomp on lobster and jumbo shrimp, but, when I do, I am reminded that they are scavengers that eat all the garbage at the bottom of  the sea! Oy.

I try to eat salmon (wild caught) once a week. I buy it frozen at Trader Joe's (my favorite place to shop). The recipe is simple. Thaw the fish in the frig. Place some oil (I prefer olive) in a skillet and turn on the heat to medium. Salt and pepper both sides of the fish and place in pan. Cook approximately 4 to 5 minutes on both sides. Serve with a small baked potato and green vegetable.

Ah, Miss Donna, we have something in common. I, too, love Trader Joe's and I love their frozen salmon. I just wish the Manhattan location wasn't always so crowded.

Thanks for the tip on frozen salmon. When we move, we will not only have a working kitchen with a dishwasher (and laundry facilities, whoo hoo!) but we will also be near the new Trader Joe's. So we will probably start cooking, finally!

Favorite fish: I never met a fish I didn't like. I love sushi!
But one time I was snorkeling in the south of France with my little French boy. He brought forks, which I thought were a strange snorkeling accessory. It turned out that these were for prying sea urchins off the rocks. We gathered a bucket of urchins and mussels and brought them up to the boat. Our hosts cooked the mussels, and then opened the sea urchins and ate them raw. They insisted I eat one, too. As I put this disgusting slimy yellow creature in my mouth, they took my picture. I think it was the most foul expression I've ever exhibited. Apparently this is some French form of hazing...

My favorite seafood meal: A few years ago, we attended a scholar's conference in Rome with a special emphasis on Sacco and Vanzetti. We showed the trailer for our film and did some shooting in Rome and Puglia, Sacco's hometown.

There were huge dinners every night---man, those academics know how to party! One night we went to a restaurant---very tucked away, we would never have found it on our own---that specialized in seafood. There was a theme to the meal that consisted of travelling from the bottom of the ocean to the top.

So the meal started with salad (representing seaweed) then the bottom feeding fish and crustaceans and worked its way through any number of fish (many different herring) with a few more green vegetables. As is typical of European meals for us, we never know how to pace ourselves or when it's all going to stop!

The meal finished at the top of the ocean, with white lemon gelato representing an ice floe. As we settled in with our amazing Italian coffee (I did not have a bad cup o' joe in Italy!) guitars were brought out along with more wine and the singing commenced with lots of old Italian folk songs that everyone but us seemed to know. I wish we had brought the video camera---it was like something out of a Fellini movie. It was one of the most unforgettable evenings and meals of our lives.

Good morning DR Edi ...  DP Kerry and I went and saw The Prestige this past weekend.  I thought that it was a really fascinating story, and wonderfully complex characters were written.  But each time I thought I had started to get a handle on what was going on, a new quirk or twist would happen, and I felt like yelling "..Aaaaarrgggghh !"  Of course, DP Kerry had figured out most of it about a third of the way into the film !!?!

I too have found Tesla an interesting character.  When I was in high school, I was definitely a semi-geek, because in addition to being in the drama department and the choir, I was also in radio club and ran projectors.

I had a step-father at the time who was a real shit of a person, and so I took an old unused neon sign transformer and built a fairly good sized "Jacob's Ladder" in our garage.  It scared the crap out of the step-father and he wouldn't come near the garage.....so of course I left it plugged in and "zapping" away as often as I could!

UGLY BETTY is a new episode tonight, so I'm looking forward to that. I guess I'll watch SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL in the 9 and 10 o'clock hours since everything else I normally watch is a rerun tonight, and though I don't mind at all rewatching shows I like (find it comforting somehow), these episodes were on just too recently to want to see them quick so soon again. And this won't be the first time they'll be rerun during the season either, so there's plenty of time to see them again.

Getting the most votes does not necessarily equate to being the most popular on these phone-in-your-votes reality shows.

5,000 people can cast 25,000 votes.  Emmitt could be reaping multiple votes from a small band of fans.  That doesn't make him more popular than anyone who is getting one vote per fan.  It means his fans are rabid, but not necessarily the majority.

It can be a very false number...any time voting can be done as many times as you want (and they LOVE to rack up those dollars from the calls), the result is skewed and is never a true reflection of total numbers of fans FOR anyone.

That is WHY "American Idol" champions have fizzled so fast, IMO.  Folks who put Ruben over the top weren't there when he cut his first CD.  Ditto with Fantasia....and I'll be very surprised if Taylor Hicks sells many CDS, too.  The fans who cast hundreds of votes each per show won't be buying 100s of CDs each.

Thursday greetings!  It's lunchtime in the ol' cube and I'm enjoying leftover chicken spaghetti from last night's dinner.

Happiest of birthdays to DR Jed!  How's the library?

TOD - I like most seafood, as long as it's cooked.  A few memorable meals that come to mind:

Fried clams at the snack bar on the pier in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ - the best!

Grilled salmon fingers on mild parmesan rice at Cafe Anticolli here in Dayton

A Door County, WI, fish boil (http://www.doorcounty.com/dine/fish-boils.aspx) - more for the experience than for the food

Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures of Vancouver and Victoria.

When I was in Vancouver a few years back, my cousin and I stayed at the 2400 Motel in Vancouver, BC. Ironically, a week after I returned, there was an episode of X Files that was shot in the room where my cousin and I stayed.

I too really enjoyed sawyer's backstory. It is actually my favorite kind of backstory when we learn something that we did not know before.

The whole jail thing was very interesting (were we supposed to know he had been in jail?)  But i especially loved how he got out.

But my favorite part of the show was henry gale/ben's con on sawyer. They had me fooled too. So brilliant. I loved it.

And the preview for next week with jack and ben looks great too.

I had planned on seeing it anyway and now I'm confirmed....

Company starring Hugh Panaro is playing at the 5th Avenue Theatre (http://www.5thavenue.org/show/Company0607/) in Seattle.  I'd really like to see it (it closes November 5th), but I don't know if I can with rehearsals, and all.  Hopefully, I can make it. :)

If you do, go backstage and tell Hugh I said he never writes, he never calls.  I called him this summer and left a message that a friend was in from London and he never called back.

And great news!  My email is back in service.

Thanks, Donald, for the Marvin show this week. Very enjoyable.

I must say, though, after hearing the original Broadway cast CD and snips of the new one, I won't be buying the new one. If I get it for free, I'll take it but I won't go out of my way to buy it. The orchestrations are not to my liking, some of the singing leaves me cold and the synthesized sound drives me up the wall! Just my humble opinion.

Lobster is my favorite...

Me too. One of the grandest meals I ever had was at (http://re3.mm-a2.yimg.com/image/382587485) on the Boston waterfront. I was on the Big-G's expense account and had the wonderful Lobster Savannah. Every other diner at our table for eight had been served, save me. Suddenly a hush descended on the previously raucous dining room; all heads turned as two waiters bearing humongous serving platter heaped with a giant stuffed lobster paraded slowly through the room. "Your Lobster Savannah, Sir" intoned the waiter. (The Head of John the Baptist had a less extravagant presentation.) Of course looking at the beast from the depths, I was uncertain as to whom was planned to nourish whom. Lobster meat, sherry, cognac, mushrooms, cheese - to die for!
Quote
Lobster Savannah
dapted from Locke-Ober Café, Boston
Time: 35 minutes
4 2-pound lobsters, cooked and cooled
2 tablespoons butter
12 large white mushrooms, chopped into  1/2-inch pieces
3 shallots, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, chopped into  1/2-inch pieces
 1/4 cup brandy
 1/2 cup cream sherry
2 cups heavy cream
Pinch of paprika
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Juice of half a lemon, or to taste
1/4 cup finely grated Parmigiano- Reggiano cheese.

1. Remove lobster claws and knuckles, crack them open and reserve meat. Using heavy kitchen shears, cut a long 1 1/2-inch- wide rectangle out of the top of each lobster body, extending from about 2 inches behind eyes to about 1 inch from tail. Keeping body in one piece, carefully pry meat from tail, and set aside. Remove any meat from body cavity, as well as the green tomalley (liver), and set aside. Rinse lobster bodies and reserve.

2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut lobster meat into 1-inch chunks, and set aside in a bowl with tomalley. Place a large sauté pan over high heat, and melt butter. Add mushrooms, and stir until mushrooms begin to release their juices, 1 to 2 minutes. Add shallots and red pepper, and stir until liquid has evaporated and vegetables begin to brown.

3. Remove pan from heat, and add brandy and sherry. Carefully touch a lighted match to mixture to flame it. When flames subside, place pan over medium-high heat. Add heavy cream, paprika and salt and pepper to taste. Add lobster meat and tomalley to pan, and stir. Add lemon juice, and adjust seasonings to taste. Allow sauce to simmer until lobster is heated and sauce is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.

4. Place reserved lobster bodies in a large baking pan. Place equal portions of lobster mixture in cavities of bodies, and sprinkle with Parmigiano-Reggiano. Bake until cheese is lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Serve immediately.
Yield: 4 servings.

(The above is NOT from Rachael Ray's "30 Minute Meals")

Nope...not even a tuna melt.  I do like McDonald's Filet-O-Fish and most "Fish and Chips" kind of fish, but that's probably because they're breaded and deep fried and don't really taste like "fish."  To me, they're really just crunchy breading for the tartar sauce.

For those who like a nice and briny 3 inch oyster, this is a good one. It is grown on the shores of Dabob Bay, which extends off of the northern end of Hood Canal in Washington State.  It is harvested at a young age to keep it small and perfect for those who enjoy oysters eaten raw off the half shell.  You can expect to taste the ocean freshness and yet enjoy a sweet after taste when eating this wonderful oyster.

I discovered the joy of these gems when I spent time in Keyport, Washington.

I grew up loving raw oysters - ever since I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I would not like them!

When I was younger the best eating were the local Chesapekae Bay Blue Points. The only rule was to only eat Oysters in a month whose name contained an "r". The current rule is "never eat an oyster not caught in the Pacific".

(I relax the rule for Oysters Rockerfeller).

This very thing happened at a Loudon Wainwright concert I attended at Town Hall a few years ago. Some drunk guy decided it would be cool to heckle Loudon. He was so obnoxious that the audience started heckling him back and then basically helped the usher oust the guy to much applause from the audience. It was the only time I've seen an audience take the law into their own hands. but what else would you expect at Town Hall?

I don't eat fish as much as I should.  I do like it. I enjoy sushi and such.  Sometimes burgers are much more appealing than fish on a menu.

Happy B-day Jed!!!

I'm so intrigued by the story from DRs Elmore and FJL about the Mary Poppins audience being sent home last night.  Does that sort of thing happen often?  Anybody have any other stories along the same lines?

I knew a puppeteer from Atlanta who performed one of the main characters in '"The Lion King"--the bird, whatever his name is. He gave us a tour of backstage and told us some horror stories. If you've seen the play, there is a huge set piece, "Pride Rock", which emerges from the middle of the stage. One time it didn't come up, so they were forced to do the show on "Pride Beach"! Another time, the rock was sinking into position and one of the actors got his foot crushed because he wasn't in the right place. It's very important to maintain your posiitons, even off stage, because you can get beaned easily by one of Julie Taymor's zebras or other animals flying into the wings.

The people performing the giraffes have to walk on stilts, also pretty dangerous. If a giraffe falls, they really can't get up because the stilts are attached to their feet. (Think Bambi on the frozen lake). So they would have a gun and pith helmet standing by in the wings. If a giraffe fell, the tech person would don the hunting gear and run out on stage shouting "I got one" and the giraffe would then be dragged off stage.

Our friend said he never saw this happen. He did see one fall but it hadn't gotten on stage yet, so the audience never knew.

Considering how much I love fish, I've never developed an appreciation for raw oysters. They fall into the sea urchin "beat you to the swallow" category. Or as my little French boy says, "they're too sleeemy"!

If you can survive a nasty head cold, you can eat a raw oyster!

Did your 'Liittle French Boy" like "sleeemy" escargots?

I love the critters but Woody says they are a frightful waste of good garlic and butter.

I have learned, however, that there is a big difference between "escargot" and "snails". Dining seeking nurishment in a Barcelona eatery (second floor, long 12-seater tables, Bizet attired waitresses) I ordered what I was lead to believe would be escargot. They delivered me a flat white place swimming in greasy brown liquid with lumpy snaily-thingies floating about - it looked like a garden mud puddle after a nasty rain - and didn't taste much better.

You have a choice aobut the oysters, though. I just like them better when they're cooked.

My "Little French Boy" likes sleeemy stuff; I think he was speaking on my behalf when he said that.

Many thanks to one and all, all and one, for the lovely birthday wishes!  As DR MattH suggested, I'm certainly not "former," just horrifically E&T, and DF Ann does keep me up to date on the happenings around here.

Seafood... Ann can bake a divoon salmon with a simple mayo based sauce.  And we happen to be headed to Red Lobster tonight to stuff my gaping maw with their "endless shrimp" deal.  Oh, and I must recall with great fondness the jumbo scallops I enjoyed at Joe Allen's on my one (so far) trip to NYC.

DRMBARNUM - John Gabriel is GREAT in The Hunters.

I'm not familiar with John Gabriel, but I have to say that he certainly has aged better than the real professor, Russell whoever. In fact, I think he's more handsome now than in his youth! Wow!

I'm sure all the other DR's know the answer to this, but what is the venue for your interviews, MBarnum?

The library is still standing, so things can't be all bad!  Actually, things are going quite well around here.  Didn't get the promotion I was shooting for, but that's far from the end of the world, as I'm very pleased with my current position.  The bump in pay was the only real reason I was going for it, and I have only been here 8 months, so there's no big rush to move up the ladder.  Today is particularly nice as I've lucked out in getting to spend my birthday working our very small, 2-staff-member branch library with my favorite co-worker.  We're angling to get ourselves permanently transferred to a similar small branch with only 2 full-time staff members.  We'd love to make it all ours!

ENjoyed the information and pics of John Gabriel. I wasn't familiar with him by name, and the pictrues didn't ring a bell either, but it's obvious he has had a nice career. I'm sure he gnashes his teeth a bit to think he'd live in immortality if they hadn't recast the Professor with Russell Johnson.

Well, he was upset about it at the time but later was grateful to have escaped the typecasting that the Gilligan's Island cast  suffered afterwards.

Gosh and golly, that was a long day at work today.

Things simply went crazy, lots more customers than we were staffed to handle.  As a result, my breaks were forgotten about by management, and usually were given about an hour after they were scheduled.  Quite frustrating.

And then, they were unable to get me off when my shift ended, and I ended up putting in fifteen minutes overtime.

Bleh.

I saw John Gabriel as part of my cabaret series last year. Unfortunatly I cannot recommend the show. I felt  is was one of the wealkest performers I have seen in the last five years or so if not the weakest. His signing voice is not strong and the show is a mess. What it needed was a stronger director and perhaps ditching the film clips which did not add anything and were a distraction. I know he recorded for BK, but I had no desire to buy his cd or stay for act two of the show. From the reaction of the people around I wasn't the only one who felt this way.

Just read:

Actor Arthur Hill is dead, starred on T-V as 'Owen Marshall'

He appeared in the original cast of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe.
Film appearances include The Andromeda Strain and Futureworld. He was also the first murder on Murder She Wrote and his character came back ten years later only to become a victim.

He died from Alzheimer disease.  He last acted back in 1990.

How can you get any more handsome than the black and white headshot of the more mature John Gabriel (that I can't seem to find anymore!)

Something like this:

Found on his  Hofstr U  (http://www.hofstra.edu/CampusL/Culture/Culture_Gabriel.cfm) website.

Mmmmmmm...Hofstra....I like him even more!

Hofstra has been a big supporter of our Sacco and Vanzetti film and that's where it had its very first screening.

Page eight octopus head dance...

In a lovely restaurant in Venice (Italy) I ordered octopus, expecting a varient on calamari.

Instead I was presented to a plate occupied a large almost-still-pulsating creature:

Sigh...these reminiscences of foreign gustatory explorations:

Mountain top cafe in Greece - I noticed a man relishing dipping large chunks of bread into a bowl of what I presumed was melted cheese. "I'll try what he has", says I.  I later was presented with my own loaf of bread and a bowl of warm curdled goat's milk.

Seedy out-of-the-eatery in Lisbon:

The local butcher shop had a small dining area where we took dinner. (I wish I had noticed that the "pepper corn" encrusted shank of beef hanging from a hook was actually covered in black flies.

While we (two other Naval Academy Midshipmen and I, in uniform) waited for our meal, I noticed a "colorful local" making like a mad chemist with pitchers and bowls and bottle at distant table. The waiter later brought us each a huge beverage mug which "had been made in our honor". It was white wine and milk sweetened with sugar.

Had I known that later that afternoon we would have been "further" honored by being led into the local bull ring to "give a try" at wrestling a young bull, I would have asked for seconds.

Under the Bull Ring stands, there were a multitude of ting vendor stalls selling glasses of Vino. After you drained the wine, the glass was left with lots of dregs - think a glass tumbler recently emptied of purple buttermilk :(

Arthur Hill was one of my favorite actors.

Had a nice little recording session with Grant, then we went out to eat, and boy did we eat.  I shall now be a very good boy for the next three or four days.

I guess Michael Shayne is still thinking about my book.  I guess he didn't care for it, but he's the first, so that's good.

For the record:

I have enjoyed the first story.
I am enjoying the second story.

This is the High School 50th Reunion weekend, so I shall not get much reading done.

UGLY BETTY was thoroughly delightful tonight. I just love the nephew who was going out for Halloween as Gene Kelly in ON THE TOWN. This is a show that knows one segment of its audience extremely well! Funny and had some touching moments, too. WOnderful show.

And it was nice seeing the lead from last year's unjustly canceled comedy OUT OF PRACTICE as Betty's potential new boy friend.

Christopher Gorham...he's a cutie! ;) And before "Out of Practice," he was in (the also short-lived) "Jake 2.0."
