I'm SO sorry to hear that, JRand56. My ancient cat of 22 will be there to welcome her and show her around.

Wonderful - I know they will have a fine time!  :D

I also love Scrooge and must say I think it is one of Bricusse's finer moments, compositionally (if not always lyrically) speaking.  There are some positively Elgar-ian moments in that score (as there are, sporadically, in Chips) and I for one find it much more accomplished than Chips.  Suzanne Neve may not be Julie Andrews, but she has a pleasant enough voice on "Happiness".  The only cringe-worthy moment for me (and we tend to watch this every year) is Tiny Tim's song, which we have made into a family performance piece with all of us doing his hand motions simultaneously.  :)

I think one of my favorite New Yorker Cartoons had Scrooge dancing around with Tiny Tim on his shoulder, a big dinner spread on the table, and Bob Cratchit and his wife standing nearby.

She has her hands on her hips and says: "Well.  I suppose we'll have to ask the old fool to stay for supper!"

I went to a party in Atlanta before going up to the mountains. I saw two friends who have been battling cancer. One has had what appears to be success with breat cancer treatments. The other was a stunning woman who could have passed for a super model, gorgeous tall blonde with a lovely British accent (she's from South Africa). She now weighs about 100 pounds and is extremely frail. It was shocking to see her like that. She was the head of a post house I used to do work at and was one of those people who seemed to have it all. It's really hard to believe.

I'm back from my cousin Debra's house.  We dined on N.Y. strip steak, baked potato, 7-layer salad and homemade bread.

It was very nice.

My mom and I have had our "Santy Claus" and we're just as pleased as can be with our "haul."

well, I have to support DR CharlesPogue on SCROOGE; it's one of the films I found so repellent in the theatre that I never saw the end of it I think I beat a hasty retreat to Eighth Avenue sometime around the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come!  Give me Alistair Sim, George C Scott, Patrick Stewart, or Mr Magoo  any time for acted CHRISTMAS CAROLS.  I respect my friends' opinions on the Bricusse film but it ain't my cuppa.

I've been waiting for two years for someone to not like it besides me.

Fortunately, TCM is now airing "Christmas in Connecticut" and it's the most "Christmasy" I've felt since arriving in these balmy, sultry parts 10 days ago.

der Brucer

I recall a Hans Sommer, who was a conductor.

Does he mean Hans Zimmer?

It's a good thing they sing well since  I disapprove entirely of their church's attitude on many things including homophobia.

I've been assured by several folks whose opinions I generally respect that "Scrooge" is the bees knees.  I've not been able to watch it on TV airings...but I did buy it on DVD and am determined to sit through it...eventually...once I can work my way beyond the first 15 minutes of "The Passion."

Please, people watch the finely nuanced performance of Sim in the '51 Christmas Carol (sometimes re-dubbed Scrooge) and then watch Finney's he looks like he's doing a bad impression of a cross between that other Dickens character, Uriah Heep, and the Wicked Witch of the West.  To okay jolly but lyrically mediocre numbers (I Like Life and Thank You Very Much) and a half-dozen half-completed songs that sound like that were dashed off the morning of shooting do not a musical make.

A good lyric should be inevitable but not predictable.   We could recite most of Bricusse's rhymes before they were sung.

The only one to come close to Sim's definitive performance as Scrooge is George C. Scott in the TV version some years ago (and Mister Magoo, of course!)

I stayed at the party too long, because there were so many people I wanted to talk to. So I was late getting to the mountains to see my Dad. Since I was only there for an hour and a half, I decided to go to church with him and his wife. He has never been a particularly religious guy, but he loves this church and its pastor.

I don't usually go to church, but I found this service very moving and everyone was thrilled to see my father there. It was quite an effort to get him there and people were touched that he'd made the effort to come there. Everyone in the church seemed to know him...it was a small church in the woods, packed to the gills. Everyone crowded around him and expressed their love for him. The pastor was extremely casual and made quite a few jokes. But his very brief sermon was about peace and extremely anti-war. This church does a lot of outreach for Habitat for Humanity, they send groups up to KY every year to help out coal miners' families, they do a tremendous amount for such a small church, and they didn't even take up a collection.

I don't go to church, as I said, but if they weren't so far away I would consider joining.
