Good morning, all! It took me nine hours to finish my notes on the Act Two score of Toyland yesterday, and today I will begin Act Three. This morning, I have to hit the office for a couple of hours with Tom Murray on Appendix material from 1923, the Lambs Club revue sketch "Toyland Today." There's been a rumor for years that Herbert was burned out by the 1920s - he died in 1924 - but the "Toyland Today" songs are fantastic, and his very cynical Foxtrot dance band version of his hit song "Toyland" is an amazingly funny piece of music.
I need to stop at Staples for a carton large enough to hold the items I'm shipping to Ohio on Monday, and I've got (again!) two more Mario Frangoulis pieces to turn in on Monday.

I am re-reading David Copperfield, all 800 plus pages. This time around it is taking me much longer than usual to read, but then I know how it ends.
He stills doesn't marry Claudia Schiffer, Las Vegas, he tours with his magic act and does the occasional tv special.

My all-time favourite movie about the theatre is THOSE LIPS, THOSE EYES with Frank Langella and BK's old pal, Tom Hulce. It's one of those things I watch whenever I get jaded or depressed about the business to remind me why I got in it in the first place. Just wonderful love letter to the theatre that hearkens back to my own beginnings and immersion in it.
I'm also fond of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE...which I think shows the power of how one can get seduced by theatre...both as a practitioner and an audience.

GOod morning!
Very overcast here and they're forecasting another "winter mix" tomorrow, so I suspect the temps will stay in the 40s today and start dropping tomorrow.
I'm glad I got the roof cleaned off during the one slightly warm, sunny (~50) day we've had this week, even if the leaves weighed more because they were wet.
Not terrifically sore this morning, but I've noticed that sometimes, muscle soreness waits a day before hitting me now at my age. Yuck.

The first film that came to mind re the topic of the day was the Garland/Cukor A STAR IS BORN. I guess it will forever be my favorite film about making it in the movie business. Score, direction, performances, production all just first rate.
But right up there are ALL ABOUT EVE and EASTER PARADE. Guilty pleasure is, as always, I LOVE MELVIN.

As for stage works, I don't think FOLLIES would apply exactly since it has show business as its background but is not really about making it.
So, A CHORUS LINE would head that list unquestionably.

Going to do some home theater adjustments and calibrations late this afternoon and then going out to dinner tonight.

I still have a couple of episodes on the MURDER SHE WROTE second disc, side 1 to watch this afternoon, and then I'm thinking I might re-watch SUNSET BLVD. Haven't seen it in awhile, and would love to spend some time with Norma "I AM big; it's the PICTURES that got small" Desmond.
BTW, I read this morning that season 3 of MURDER SHE WROTE comes out in March. Glad Universal isn't dragging its feet on releasing this one.

I read this morning that President Bush is speaking to the nation on Sunday night at 9, but I guess ABC's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS will be over by then. I assume it starts at 7. Haven't checked the listings to make sure, but I'm guessing that's when it will air.
Who else is planning to watch it?

I saw this in the newspaper today - On Dec. 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright took the first successful man-powered airplane flights, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. So in honor of Orville and Wilbur here's a poem I memorized in second or third grade and for some reason still remember.

Greetings from cold, wet, cloudy Johnston, South Carolina!
My flight in was without serious consequence, although my shuttle ride to SFO was fraught with peril as the driver seemed hellbent on breaking some record or other for taking curves at breakneck speed. I was sliding all over the place.
The flight from SFO to Atlanta was lovely and relaxing. Very quiet and laidback with plenty of sleeping potential (but not nearly enough sleep). It was 4 hours.
Atlanta's airport was, in a word, hectic. It is one of othe busiest places I've ever been through.
The flight from Atlanta to Columbia was on bus someone attached wings to. I did get a few winks in during the hour-long flight. And I arrived to a blustery, rainy, foggy day.
It's good to be here and so far, so good.

With A Song in My Heart -- the biographical musical of the professional life of Jane Froman.
Love Me or Leave Me -- the Ruth Etting story.
I'm also fond of "Good Morning, Babylon," the story of two Italians who came to the U.S. (from a long line of cathedral builders) and got jobs with D.W. Griffith to design his sets for "Intolerance." Don't have a clue whether it's based on a true story, but it's a fascinating film.

I am eating well. I'm sleeping well. I could very easily get used to "retirement" and doing what I felt like doing when I felt like doing it.
That said, I'm using my mom's computer (dial-up modem) and will probably post only once daily while I'm here.

I'm up, I'm up, and feeling decent. She of the Evil Eye is here already, but I have to hang around until ten, when the gal is coming to replace the bamboo blinds in the dining room. Perhaps I'll fill out Christmas cards until then.

Here it is, the Saturday morning after the last Friday of school before Christmas Break, what a relief! This week was filled with running from school to school and back again, rehearseing, calming down freaked out teachers that are freaking out over the condition of the Christmas Program. They couldn't believe how calm I was. If they thought the final rehearsal was bad, they should attend some final dress rehearsals of a full scale musical.
One school does a Christmas Prayer Service. The same idea each year. I try and vary the music as much as possible. It's a good service, very prayerful, and from a "diretor's" standpoint, a piece of cake. Nothing is memorized, all the words for the songs are projected on the wall and no one has lines, it's all read by a series of readers and then acted out. It's a really good thing,
The other school's program is a bit more of an undertaking. I create it from start to finish. This year's theme was "Share the Light". Songs about light, and the theme of being "light for the world" held together by some patter about the songs. Word to the wise... never put flashlights in 350 kids hands and expect them not to play with them during the program. Well, it wasn't that bad, as mom said, it added to the charm of the evening. One of the highlights of the evening was the singing of "Go Light Your World" and 350 flashlights swaying in the air at one point. The program went VERY well, one of the best, as mom said. Good times... and now it's over.
It will be nice to slow down a bit this week, maybe I'll be able to post more!

For me: Singin' In The Rain, A Chorus Line, Footlight Parade, Enter Laughing (I haven't seen it since it came out, so I don't know if it holds up, but I sure loved it back then), The Stunt Man, parts of Stage Struck, All About Eve, and I'll think of others.
Isn't it interesting that at least four things I've written all are backstage things: Stages, Together Again, Writer's Block, The First Nudie Musical.

I read this morning that President Bush is speaking to the nation on Sunday night at 9, but I guess ABC's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS will be over by then. I assume it starts at 7. Haven't checked the listings to make sure, but I'm guessing that's when it will air.
Who else is planning to watch it?

All this becomes even more problematical for the WestCoasters, who would be getting the President at 6. Exactly how this would mesh with the football games being aired on CBS is even more uncertain: could George W. become the new Heidi?

Now I could have sworn you gave one of your patented curmudgeonly thumbs down to this film when it came out on DVD many years ago. But maybe I'm thinking of someone else. You may know that its director credits a certain "fictionalizing" Seattle film critic with saving the film due to his rave review after the studio didn't want to release it (sound familiar? ;) ).

Saturday greetings! This is my last Sat. to work until January 28, and I just completed one of my favorite tasks - teaching this month's version my 3-hour Grantseeking Basics workshop. Had a great audience of 15, including two new part-time librarians in my department who will be helping me.
TOD - many have already been mentioned, but I also liked the stage version of Noises Off and this year's movie Being Julia. And Fame, both the movie (which DR elmore and I saw together in NYC) and the TV show.

I don't think I gave a thumb's down - I find it a quirky film - not in my pantheon, obviously, but well done with a terrific score by Dominic Frontiere. However, I might have given it a thumb's down, you never know.

I agree about a lot of the works mentioned for the topic of the day. I'd add CITY OF ANGELS as a favorite if the category can be stretched to include it, in part due to my current Cy Coleman addiction. I didn't actually see SEESAW, but I'd probably add that based on the cast album since there's a lot of backstage stuff in it.
On the guilty pleasure front, I'd add the Strouse-Adams one-nighter A BROADWAY MUSICAL, which I found utterly fascinating, as well as the Lauren Bacall-Michael Biehn-Maureen Stapleton film THE FAN.

Here's what she did: She wrote down the last four numbers of my phone number as my address. I know. Not only that, then she wrote down my phone number so she'd have it with her - that she wrote down using my address for the last four numbers. I know. Funnily and ironically, when she called the phone number it was the reservation line for the El Portal. How funny is that?

Watched more MURDER SHE WROTE this afternoon. One of my favorite episodes - with Jayne Meadows as Lila Lee, a cosmetics tycoon - was on the disc, and it was wonderful seeing other famous folks like Millie Perkins and Robert Culp.

By all means watch BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. It's hilarious.

I then put in a Peanuts special I had never seen: I WANT A DOG FOR CHRISTMAS, CHARLIE BROWN. This one was probably an hour show on the network. It featured the character of Rerun, the younger brother of Lucy and Linus. The later specials were culled from actual strips rather than being written specifically for TV, so there is a more episodic feel to it as opposed to the early (superior) specials.
I have to say that I did like the voices they used in this special (many of the later Peanuts specials didn't have distinctive children's voices for the characters), and I did enjoy it. Not the classic that A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS is, but few shows are.

On this same DVD was the special "The Making of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'" hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. I do think I had seen at least parts of this show before, but it was interesting seeing the beginnings of Peanuts TV animation. Glad to have this special in my collection.

I'd told her I'd found the exact match in a catalog that came here (the catalog probably comes here since that's where they were purchased), but she'd already thought she'd found the match. It was close, but no ceegar, so she'll be ordering the correct ones on Monday and hopefully they can ship them out Fed Ex and I can get them installed before the Christmas Eve Do.

I watched a veeeeeeeeeerrrrryyyyyy long Bollywood mythological extravagance from the 1960s (in Eastmancolor!), then I watched a fantastic B&W Mexican soaper from the 50s, now I shall eat dinner and watch a great American Cinemascope musical in Technicolor!
After that, who knows!

I saw the show today with Jessica Skerritt, but sadly, I was not able to say "hi" to her...from BK or even me. It was a matinee and the actors didn't come out to greet their adoring fans in between the shows. :( I might usher again in the next week or so. I think all those cute bears, courtesy of Tomovoz got to me. Today I went on an errand for Keith and the store had a really cute, very large, stuffed Bernese Mountain Dog. I couldn’t resist at $12.00.
I think she is depressing Keith but I just love her. As I walked around carrying her, in the store and the parking lot, people just kept smiling. If Keith doesn’t want her in the house I might keep her in my car.

A SONG IS BORN is coming on TCM....another Danny Kaye film that I like. And I will be reviewing two of my FAVORITE films for the upcoming Scarlet Street.
It is very exciting to write about films I REALLY REALLY like - even if it is only 300 words for each!

I also like parts of STAGESTRUCK, but Susan Strasberg's performance is such a surprising and humiliating failure....and that English woman is grating beyond belief!!!
I think it would make some sort of Twilight Zone episode....the numbers of BK's address....if used as the numbers of his telephone.....call the ticket office of the THEATRE where his new play is being produced!!!

I just finished watching OKLAHOMA, a musical that for some reason or other I have never seen. I enjoyed it. It was certainly MUCH more entertaining (IMHO) then CAROUSEL.
However, it still has not made me a fan of Shirley Jones.
On the other hand I thought Gloria Graham stole the movie! She was a riot!
And what is not to like about Gordon MacRae...he just makes me swoon.

BK, sorry to hear about your food poisoning episode... I had it from some bad guacamole while on the road in Abilene, TX, and had to ride the bus for 6 hours the next day... and then when we got to the next stop, there was no drinkable water anywhere. I had to get a ride 30 minutes to Walgreen's to get bottled water and saltines. And do two shows. Ugh.
It ain't pretty. Glad you're feeling better!

Caught the bulk of WHAT'S UP DOC? playing on the local PBS station this evening. Probably one of the favorite films of my childhood.
A funny thing though is that the things I loved about it as a kid, the car chase and all the slapstick, do not seem that funny now, but the other things about it that I didn't get as a youngster seem quite enjoyable now.
And I don't think Streisand ever looked as gorgeous.

Well... I would have posted between shows, but I ended up heading back home between shows and working out. I had slept in this morning, and just didn't have time to get my workout in before heading in for the matinee. Sometime during the matinee, I realized that I had a nice three and a half hour break between shows, so...
I was very glad that I got my workout in today. -Especially since I've been "indulging" a little bit the past few days. -I have to eat my Opening Night chocolate some time, don't I? ;) In any case, I was thinking that I would make today my "off" day, but I'm glad it turned out to be an "on" day. -The next two weeks will be the real "test" with all the Christmas goodies bound to cross my proverbial path. -All in moderation.

I'm toying with the idea of heading up to NYC either tomorrow night after the show or sometime Monday morning. I don't have to go up for anything, but I'd like to go up. We'll see.
Otherwise, I think I may head down to Richmond again for the day. There are a couple of things I need to dig out of my storage unit - again - and it would be nice to get some of those things in my hand before Christmas. -And then I'm also toying with the idea of heading up to NYC on Christmas Day. My family mainly does Christmas Eve so... This way, I could spend a good chunk of Sunday up there, as well as all day Monday and Tuesday morning. Hmm... Again, we shall see...

I have to say, I did not like "Topsy Turvy". I actually found it quite a bore. But that may have something to do with my less than fervent adoration of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. I think I was turned off by some of the "crazy" Savoyards I've come across in my travels.
Compleat Female Stage Beauty I liked a lot. -I still need to see the film version, "Stage Beauty" that came out last year.
Does anyone recall a movie that dealt with a group of unlikely people - perhaps an insane asylum - putting on a production of Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte"? I remember seeing a preview for this movie, but I never got to see it. And I can't remember the title.

Yes, that's the Gardenia, very close to the Hudson.
Miss Purl was in fine voice and was sexy and beautiful. My intention is to not keep much of what she did tonight (and has been doing forever), maybe twenty percent tops. I really want to start from pretty much scratch. She's wonderful, though. Interesting folks in attendance - Carole Cook and hubs Tom Troupe, Ann Turkel (sitting next to Miss Barbara Deutsch and I, and looking quite beautiful), Stephen Bishop, Tom Bosley, and others. The sidemen were my very own sidemen from our benefit, so it was nice to see them on bass and drums.
