Good morning!

COld this morning but a tiny bit warmer this afternoon. Tomorrow is when we start our real warming trend, and I'm ready for somewhat milder temperatures.

And as for some of the "surprises" among this morning's Oscar Nominations, well... The L.A. Times sums it up best:

The Envelope

Quote
There were several snubs:

Bruce Springsteen, who won the Golden Globe for best song for his title tune from "The Wrestler," was overlooked. The "Dark Knight" failed to receive nominations for best picture, director or screenplay -- a surprise for those who had predicted it would do well in those categories. Also noticeably missing from the list was Sally Hawkins for best actress for "Happy-Go Lucky" and Dev Patel for best supporting actor for "Slumdog Millionaire."

Clint Eastwood fans who had been hoping the veteran would get an Oscar nomination for lead actor for "Gran Torino," which is shaping up to be the 78-year-old icon's biggest box office hit, were undoubtedly disappointed.

Veteran director and screenwriter Woody Allen also was passed up for his "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio failed to earn nominations for "Revolutionary Road."

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...  And what about those Oscar Nomination!?!?!?

*A few surprises, but at least one of them - for me - was a very pleasant one: Richard Jenkins for Leading Actor in "The Visitor".  Oh, and Michael Shannon for Supporting Actor in "Revolutionary Road".

Jenkins was nominated for the SAG so it wasn't a total surprise for me. I was surprised that Dev Patel wasn't nominated for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Also, only three best song nominations (two of which went to songs in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE). Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler" (which won the Golden Globe) didn't get nominated.

Yes, the studio for THE READER had been pushing Kate Winslet as Best Supporting Actress for the film so she could qualitfy as Best Actress for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. The actors branch obviously saw things differently.

I'll be working on the second season of THE INVADERS today (and likely the next two days as well). It's a full season of episodes (unlike season one), so there's something like 1300+ minutes to watch.

With BONES moving to Thursday nights, the 8 p.m. time period now becomes as crowded for me as Wednesdays at 10. Too many good shows all on at the same time.

The animated feature category is WALL-E, BOLT, and KUNG FU PANDA. That should be an easy one to predict, even though KUNG FU PANDA was also very popular this year.

I also noticed that the hilarious short animated film "Presto" which accompanied WALL-E in theaters is nominated in the animated short category. It was SO fresh and funny, very similar to the lunacy of the old Warner Bros. cartoons.

I was disappointed that Eastwood didn't get a nod, but there were really no major surprises for me.

I guess I'm going to have to find a theater that is showing SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and not serving food.

Taraji has certainly come a long way from her awful role in BOSTON LEGAL. I couldn't stand her character on that show.

I'm sort of surprised(?) that I've seen all but one of the Foreign Language nominees.  Guess I'll have to search out "Departures" now.
