It still boggles my mind, at the age of 70, how naive I was regarding so many things. In particular, I can’t believe that growing up I was so unaware of anti-semitism.

I grew up in Tacoma and I went to school with a lot of Jews. I was never aware of any hatred or bias against them at all. My mother’s cousin was married to a very well-known Jewish pathologist.

A lot of it, I'm sure, is what is actually allowed to be published in the history books. The Texas State Board of Education pretty much dictates what kinds of issues are allowed (and specifically not allowed) to be written in the books because they buy so many that the publishers have to kowtow to their demands.

And what really boggles my mind is that I always thought, growing up, that WW II was ancient history, but actually I was born exactly five years after the end of the war.
