Title: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
Post by: bk on May 12, 2010, 12:06:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes rolled along merrily, and now it is time for you to post until the merry cows come home.

Up too early once again and a fuller than full day ahead. Juggling the census and deadlines for the second issue of San Antonio Taste magazine. Plus, the New World Wine and Food Festival is starting tonight, and I'm on the board, so I'll have to put in a few appearances at events this week. Sunday's is the best, because it involves judging a barbecue contest. And all I want to do is sleep.

I have LOTL on DVD - Sophia Loren and John Wayne actually have some chemistry....and Rosanno Brazzi is the same as always - incomprehensible.

Kurt Kazsner is annoying, but I guess he is supposed to be.

I liked GLEE for the most part....like Kurt's scenes more than his songs....the actor does weird things with his mouth when he's singing.....highlight for me was Finn's JESSE'S GIRL.....so far he has had my two favorite songs since the show came back....HELLO, I LOVE YOU was so well staged.

And just how many characters on this show are going to have challenged friends/family to trot out for musical numbers.....and of course they reverted to the soap opera climax.....an hour of drama and carrying on vanishes in a sentence....."Oh the honey and herbal tea fixed me right up....."

I will soon be on my way to see a matinee of TITANIC the MUSICAL.....and then to visit HELLO DOLLY...so I will be gone all day.

I shall report when I return home....whenever that may be.

Good morning, all! I was awakened by a lot of noise between 6 and 6:30 from the apartment above me. I don't know if he was taking the dog for a walk, just coming home, or what, but we had several moments of heavy activity before things quieted down again. The alarm went off at 7 and i stayed in bed until 7:30 or so. The McGlinnventory was canceled this morning due to maintenance work in the lobby, mostly moving cartons and setting up the book shelves so we can unpack all of the music and books. I have to be at Toyland around noon for an editing session with Skip Kennon, so I'll head down there around 11 or 11:30.

Last night I began BK's new book, and then I had strange dreams of bicycling with my brother Macbeth as boys. I remember in the dream biking up First Avenue and having a fight with him about whether to turn another direction to go home because I didn't want to takethe really steep hill in the direction he was riding. Then I woke up. I had more dreams, but that one is all I remember now. I blame BK for all of it.

Last evening, DR td said:
Quote
I do hope you're following this up with Anansi Boys. . .

Tell me, have you read Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN series?
Have you read Good Omens?
Do you read Terry Pratchett as well?

I also really liked Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. . .

I will most probably read ANANSI BOYS in the next month or so.  I don't want to rush into it so soon after AMERICAN GODS.

Even though I first became aware of Neil Gaiman with his BLACK ORCHARD mini-series, I didn't become a real fan until SANDMAN.  I lived for that book every month during the initial run.  And during the past few years I loved being able to relive it through the beautiful ABSOLUTE SANDMAN anthologies.

I read GOOD OMENS, but I found it a bit too twee.  I might revisit it sometime, though.  (Consequently, I never picked up any other Terry Pratchett book.

And I absolutely loved THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, though I completely missed the Kipling connection.  I might reread that one, too, now that I understand it's literary ancestry...

As for myself, I'll be working on the Blu-ray of HIGH ANXIETY this afternoon and HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART 1 tonight which will leave ROBIN HOOD MEN IN TIGHTS for tomorrow.

I have to say that when I was watching/reviewing these discs for THE MEL BROOKS COLLECTION last December, I was really starting to tire of his shtick by the time I got to HIGH ANXIETY (of course, I had already seen all of these films in the theater). After several months away from them, maybe I'll be in a more receptive mood for them now.

I wonder who shall get voted off of IDOL tonight.  Hopefully either mike or casey (my least favorites).

Alas i will not get to watch the season finale of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, since the station that shows it here is not available in Quebec. But they have a sister station that replays it on saturdays. So hopefully i will try not to find out who wins.

Well, folks, we are down to the wire:  tomorrow is the official moving day.  I am shlepping all the stuff that's on other stuff today--tops of desks, file cabinets, little stuff in the kitchen, etc.  Then the movers arrive tomorrow morning and the die is cast.  I may be without internets for a day or two--they claim my new Fiber Optic modem is plug and play, but a wag at Blu-ray.com told me that usually means plug and pray.  :)

Today's words of wisdom from DS Gabe:  I've been listening to Incognito again, which features a lot of (quite fine) scat singing.  Gabe came in and said, "Have you noticed how these songs are mostly drunken slurs punctuated by occasional words in actual English?"  :)

Today's incredibly hilarious, unintentionally ironic quote from DW Wife Betsy:  we're at the point (as mentioned above) where I'm moving mostly knick-knacks.  I asked Betsy to make me a list of places that needed moving (this after by her own admission she's done next to nothing to help with this move).  Her response:  "Oh, you don't need me to tell you what to do."  Even she couldn't help but burst out laughing after she said it.  :)

Question for BK:  When a movie company blocks off a street like that for filming, can they prevent someone from sitting out on their lawn in a beach chair and umbrella or from standing up and dancing around?  How much jurisdiction do these people have over the folk who live on the street?
Title: Re: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG

They think they own the world is what they think.  I'm sure one of the set cops would try to stop it from happening - don't know how much legality they'd have in making an arrest, though, as the person is on their own property.  If someone were really being inconvenienced, I should think a good production manager would go and make peace and probably offer a little cash.

I think i feel the opposite to DR RonP.  I thought the episode was just okay. It was interesting to get
some backstory on jacob and the man in black. Their history was relevant. And Allison Janney was
interesting. But that said, I just can't believe that with only 2 new episodes left that they would have
an episode with none of the regular characters. To me this is ridiculous. Those are the people that
i am invested in. And yet they did not spend even one minute on any of these stories or the alternate stories.

We are supposed to have warmer days tomorrow through the weekend, but odds are we will cool down and have more rain next week.

It's very nearly practically unprecedented for us at this time of year.  We have had rainfaill for the past seven weeks (in varying amounts, of course).

All the local weatherman for Fox network could say this morning was "Climatology tells us this is not possible, but it's happening".   If he said it once, he said it three times before I left the house this  morning.

When I was in the Bay area 1984-1987, it rarely got above 80 degrees in the Oakland area in the summertime.  Since I've lived here (1993 to present), we have had progressively warmer summers until the last two which were markedly cooler than those several years before.

I'm thinking it will be another cool summer.  We might even see more rainfall during the summer months.  That WOULD be unprecedented!

I recall that, many years ago, there were some gardeners who would find out where movie companies were shooting on a particular day, then go there, turn on their noisy equipment and refuse to go away until they were paid off.

Great news DR Ginny.  Vibes your DR niece continues to improve & away from the hospital.

Thank you, DR Jane, and thanks to DR Vixmom for last night's vibes for Lauren.  I think she should have stayed with her mom to take it easy through the weekend, but she's gone back to her college apartment and will probably go into work tomorrow.

In other matters, I'm about 70 pages into A Mother and Two Daughters...

Well, though I have Finale, I refuse to use it unless absolutely necessary for reasons just like that.  In Encore, all you do is click "Tuplet" and enter your how many notes and the entire note value for the run, everything else is automatic.

I am very very very (that's three verys) excited. I just this minute recieved my own personal copy of our own BK's new book. I cannot wait to begin! I wish I could put Toby to bed at 5:30 so I could curl up on the couch and begin devouring it right away. However, motherly and wifely duties call first. Perhaps tonight I shall sneak a few chapters in bed before I go to sleep.

Oy, vey, what a day.  So far I have shlepped two loads to the new house.  I also listed two armoires and a chest of drawers, as well as our basketball hoop on CL, and have just sold the last of them.  I also have been IVing yard people for the house once the renters move in.  Those of you who have been here know we have a humongous back yard and most of these slimebuckets have come over, taken one look at the backyard, and said "No way, man."  Do people want to work or don't they?  Don't answer that.  I finally found a couple who will do it in my budget.  They're a bit on the goth, heavily tatooed side, but they were articulate and very nice.  Was Charles Manson articulate?   :o

We're trying to close a deal for three scores - I'm praying it happens in the next week - one of those scores is an all-time Holy Grail and, for me, one of the greatest scores ever written.  And this would be its first CD release - there was an LP, but we'll not only have the LP presentation, but the entire score from great sources.  And this is not a short score - this would undoubtedly be a 2 CD set.

Well, that was for Encore, and I find Encore a MUCH simpler program to use.  Finale drives me crazy (a short drive, as you're already aware).  But for that example above, in Encore you'd click Tuplet, enter "7" in the first field and "3/8" (3 eighth notes) in the second, and it comes out perfectly.

Well, just back from another 12-hour shift. On day one, we were told there would be no overtime. Today, we were told we were 29 percent behind our goal for the week, so there will be overtime showered on us like there was last week. Great, except for the magazine work, which is a disorganized mess, and the wine festival, which I must attend a few events. Sleep will have to wait.

I can tell you where the HELL I've been today: here at home without DSL. AGAIN!

This is getting really old. I had my plans all mapped out today: watch HIGH ANXIETY in the afternoon, get that review written and posted, and then go back down and do HISTORY OF THE WORLD tonight, get that review written and posted later in the evening. Now becuase DSL was out for many hours, I got all the watching and writing done, but the reviews tumble back-to-back onto the site now, not the way I wanted to present them.

Let's see what else I've watched today.

I began with LOST which I felt was a great episode

with a riveting story of origin and a tie-in to a season one event that was haunting.

Then I watched AMERICAN IDOL's top four sing their movie songs. A forgettable hour of music if there ever was one. I wasn't blown away with anyone, and at this point I don't care who goes home or who wins. I'm only watching because my little Thursday lunch group wants to continue watching to the bitter end.

Watched both HIGH ANXIETY in the afternoon and HISTORY OF THE WORLD in the evening, both on Blu-ray. The latter looks and sounds far better than the former, but it always has on home video.

These, of course, are identical to the Blu-rays in THE MEL BROOKS COLLECTIOn released late last year.

Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Noah woke from his operation with his sight partially restored, and Reid's heart looked to be breaking as Luke and Noah began to bond again (though Luke is obviously feeling a bit torn with his feelings for both guys).

naturally, they bring up this interesting turn in the relationships and they're not in the previews for tomorrow. Smart move! NOT!!!

I watched two more BONES episodes from season two because I had skipped over them a couple of weeks ago when I was revisiting the series.

Of course, I'm talking about the best show of the season: the one with Brennen and Hodgins trapped in the car buried by the Gravedigger.

And the second best episode: the death of the kid in the forest in a CLAIR WITCH style story that had a heartbreaking ending for Tempe.

Madeline makes all of the lame material she's given in those films sparkle. I love seeing her work. She's also saddled with mediocre leading men who aren't worthy of her: Mel Brooks and Dom DeLuise.

DR Druxy, I think Roger Corman tells a story of filming TEENAGE DOLL on location. The owners of one of the houses in the shot turned on their sprinkler just as the crew was to begin shooting, which of course was going to foul op the shot. The owners of course figured that this movie company would pay them to turn off the sprinkler.

Instead, Roger, or a crew member sent by Roger, went over to the owners and told them that the water from the sprinkler was making a beautiful sparkle, just perfect for the scene. The owners then turned the sprinkler off. LOL!

I did record VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA off HBO-HD since I was supposed to have reviewed it over a year ago, and Lionsgate never sent the disc. Finally I'll get to see it. Maybe tomorrow night after I finish my work project in the afternoon.

Point of observation, if you are young and beautiful it's extremely easy to get picked up in Ventura.  Lots of men and women on the prowl.

Finished with my viewing, which included last night's episode of Lost and I must say my opinion is the polar opposite of MattH's.  I could not believe with just three shows to go they spent an ENTIRE episode away from the main characters.  That is just so ridiculous - maybe the episode would have worked earlier in the season, but here, for me, it was a major irritant.  My feeling is that, for the people who LOVE LOVE LOVE every episode and plot point of this show, the show can simply do no wrong.  For me, it's not that easy, I'm afraid, and this show has now gone off on so many wrong-headed tangents that it's almost in Alias territory.  But, that's just me, and I'm glad others are loving it so.

Ah, just went back and read the other accounts of Lost and see we're two for two - MattH and Ron loved it, Jennifer and I found it ridiculous that with only two shows left they would spend an entire episode away from the main cast and stories and alternate timeline - not to mention having yet another brand new character.

I've been reading posts about the episode on various boards - the majority of posts that I read were not happy with the episode, some citing it as the worst of the series, and several being very annoyed with it.  Here is a rather typical post from one of those boards:

Lost: the story of a series gone wrong. Lost: the creative ability of the writers. I thought some of the last episodes were bad,......but if this is what we get in the last two episodes. ....Dreck! What a rip off. I've waited 6 years for this. Had I known.......As Freddy the Pig said...as the days were getting torrider and torrider, the plot was getting horrider and horrider. The worst New Outer Limits exceeded the creativity of the ill-begotten Lost by far. Oh well.....Let's see how they tie the garbage together before it goes to the dump.

I have never seen Lost, so I could not presume to say much. However, I find in general that I quickly lose interest when writers try to be too clever, too complicated, and play too much on their viewer's emotions. I value a simple scene that has been well written far more than the scene crammed with cliff hangers and plot twists.

Still, Lost obviously works for a huge number of people - in fact, the people who find it problematic are in the minority.  It's all horse racing, of course.  I said I'd stick with the show to the bitter end and I obviously will (although with Alias, I got so annoyed at the last two shows before the season finale that I didn't even watch the final episode) - I hope that doesn't happen here, but I've been pretty disappointed with this final season.  And I did enjoy some shows in previous seasons, even when I felt the writers were clearly flailing (which they have admitted).
