Well, you've read the notes, the notes had Swiss movement, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just cutting some slack right now and will be bringing the slack with them when they come home.

Canada Unveils Whopping 220-Pound Coin
Reuters

(May 4) - The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a welcome addition to any piggy bank on Thursday -- a monster gold coin with a face value of $1 million in Canadian dollars, or about $900,000 in U.S. dollars -- that it says is the world's biggest, purest and highest denomination coin.

At 21 inches in diameter and over 1.2 inches thick, the massive coins need a high level of hand crafting.

While it has about a $900,000 face value, the coin is worth more than twice that amount given the current gold price of $616 an ounce.

It was a dark and somber evening in the theatre last night but well worth it. The final moments and the "curtain call", as others have said, is amazingly moving. The entire cast is excellent. Boyd Gaines, who played George in the revival of She Loves Me, is so good as the "older" officer.

Oh, my, the waste of war!

Friday and a work day for me as well.

TOD:

DVD - Dreamgirls
CD - The Long Long Trailer/Forever Darling
VHS - Streamers

DR MATTH - I know that the widescreen will give me the whole picture of DREAMGIRLS.  I just don't know if I want to see it again.  I liked it and will watch for a used copy later this summer.  I was very disappointed in the performance of Nanny Noo Noo as Lorrell....she gave a terrible eye-popping and teeth-baring performance with some really bad line readings.  I was thinking of the three gals, she would be the best actress, but something went wrong.

If you have the ON DEMAND feature, MR BK - you should be able to watch both parts of the BRANDO documentary.  I know that in all of its promos on TCM, it was hawked as a two-parter.

For some reason last night all of my non HD stations were VERY fuzzy while my HD stations were fine.  :(

I also have a copy of DREAMGIRLS, but having already seen it via a screener, I'm not too much in a rush to see it again.  I was overall disappointed with it.  I thought that most of the on-stage musical numbers were wonderfully done and exciting, but the character songs didn't work (dropping the recitative was a big mistake--I think the structure of the work depends on it.)  I like most of the performances--Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose and, yes, even Bouncy.  But there were times I wish someone in the scenes with Jamie Foxx would have shot him with a taser to get some kind of reaction from him.  He should have been the driving force in this movie but he's barely there, so much of it just lays flat.

Oh, well, there's always HAIRSPRAY to look forward to... ::)

I work in an office.  Sometimes I'm glad, sometimes not so.

Since last fall, we've been filling in our timesheets online.  We are not saving any trees since we didn't have to fill in timesheets before.  All we are doing now is wasting bandwith and storage with automated e-mail messages reminding us to fill in our timesheets or scolding us for not doing so.

My 48 hours away from the store will be over too too soon.  Der B and I did drop buy, getting foodstuffs for last night, and the new self-checking registers have been installed, but aren't working yet.  I'll be trained on how they work some time in the next two days.

The problem with all these have-the-customers-do-it-themselves machines is that they are all designed so that the average person can figure the procedures out.  The key word is average.  This means that roughly fifty percent of the customers, who are below average in intelligence, will not be able to figure how to make the damn things work.  So someone will have to be watching the registers, to help the customers figure out what they're doing.  My hunch is, we're going to have a cashier helping the customers for a good percentage of the time, one per self-checkout register.

So much for the intelligence of management.  And I don't mean the management at our store - I mean management at the regional level.  Bleh.

Ok, I have to have to rant for a minute. The secretary who thinks she rules the world told the cleaning people to clean off the top of our desks.  Now, this has never been the office policy. If there are no documents on the desk they are to clean otherwise they are to keep their hands off the desks. (They have already thrown out boxes I had broken down and saved in my office)

I told her once that I don't want it done and she said she thought it was a good idea.  Today I came in and everything was rearranged, my work was in little piles and rows that I didn't not place it in (and I was here until 8:00 PM so I know the staff didn't do it).

I was livid...we're talking expletives flowing freely livid.  She who thinks she rules the world told me I would have to leave a note for them.  Not likely.  I called her supervisor in Des Moines and told her about the situation. She clearly sided with me and asked who approved this - when I told her no one, that SWTSRTW decided on her own that it was a good idea the response was "Noooo, we don't do things that way".

39 work days and I am counting

End of rant.

DR Dear Reader Laura:

Some of the nicest customers I know fall below the average, just like some of the nastiest are above average.  Nice has nothing to do with brains, and too often really has nothing to do with brains.  Which makes me question just how much brains some of the customers with brains really have.  Then again, I've some very smart regular customers who are also wonderful people.  I'm very sure you would be one of my favorite customers, no matter where you fall on the average line.

If people use the self check-out regularly, then yes, I can see how they won't need much help after a certain training period.  The problem that we're going to be facing here in Rehoboth Beach is that we are living in a tourist/resort town.  The turnover, particularly during the summer, is pretty high, so a lot of our customers will show up once or twice and be gone.

We already get complaints from the customers just passing through about how the credit card keypads work.  "No two are ever alike!" they wail.  "That's by state law," I deadpan.  And it's amazing how many customers look at me, believing every word, and say "Really?"  Hilarity ensues.

DR Woody, I don't know how your system will be set up, but here they have all the self check outs in one area. Then there is a checker station where they approve checks, do other things that need approval and answer question. There is one employee for anywhere from 4-6 self check out stations and that person doesn't cover a regular check out line.

So... I get here at 9:40 for the 10:00 callbacks...

The monitors get here at 9:45 to set up the room for the 10:00 callbacks...

The monitor calls the office at 10:05 to inquire where everyone is - especially since there are no actors or dancers waiting to come in to the room...

"Oh... We're not starting until Noon?....  -Do you want to speak to them, Jose?

We will have four self-checking registers running on Sunday, or at least that's the schedule.  Our assumption is that we'll need one checking assistant per register, at least for the training period.  Then, as we checkers become more proficient we should be able to cut back to two assistants.  But with our heavy tourist trade, I don't think we'll have any fewer than two assistants at least until fall, maybe not until winter.

I just hope that our store management recognizes that the checkers handling the self-checking registers will have to be the most patient, nicest people we have on staff.  We have always prided ourselves on our interactions with the customers, making the store a place where the customers want to return.

Carol, our store manager for the eight years we've been open, has been fighting against this change for the entire eight years.  She knows how important the human element can be in making a store work.  However, she will be retiring sometime in the fall.  I'm just glad that she's had the sense to have this change made while she's still in charge, so that she can oversee the change, rather than have it made by some newcomer who doesn't know the territory (a Rock Island reference).

Good morning!

Much cooler here today (highs not supposed to get out of the 60s), and it's overcast, too, which suggests rain is on the way.

I'm just glad for the cool spell. 90 degree weather in May is absurd.

I'd say I use the self-check lane at the grocery store about 85% of the time. SInce I've started going to the grocery store on Fridays, the regular lanes are almost always corwded. The self check lanes are quicker and less full. I don't mind bagging my own groceries as I check them. Kind of fun, actually.

I spent 2 1/2 hours this morning watching the Criterion disc of ARMY OF SHADOWS, Melville's marvelous film about the French Resistance. Not the greatest transfer (though very clean; the trailers on the disc are sharper and more colorful than the feature presentation).

There is a complete second disc of features that I'll dive into at some point today and tomorrow.

As for Self-Checkout Lines....  I like them too.  But sometimes I also like having a real person check me out.  So to speak. In any case...

I just wish there signs posted somewhere on the machine or in the area of the self-checkout lanes stating that you MUST place your items in the bag (the scale) before you can proceed.  I still remember the first time using the machine, I had just two items with me.  And I wasn't going to bag them, so I just held the first item in my hand after scanning it.  And waited.  And waited.. Ohhh....

-And I also wish there was a way to enter multiple quantities of the same item.  I still remember scanning 30(!) bookends at IKEA once.  UGH!  *And since they were so light - made of plastic - most of the time, they didn't register on the scale when I placed them there.  So the checkout supervisor had to come over to my machine to do the override again and again and again.   -He eventually counted how many I had left in my cart and did a manual entry of my purchase.

DR François:  I do appreciate your attempt to set me straight in my queries directed at DakotaCelt yesterday afternoon.

The fact is, I missed nothing.  The fact is, she was commenting about a reek in the library -- a room which was HEATED and yet the doors were open.

My query had to do with whether the reek was being generated inside the library or was the reek coming from outside.

Reeks do get generated in overheated rooms...and, thus...I was having some fun in seeking an absolute clarification of the true circumstances of her original statement.

Do let things play out.....

Bleh.

Two years ago, one of our supermarkets installed four self-service registers in one of their less than upscale stores.  I predicted doom and gloom to the whole operation.  Two years later, the system is working far better than anyone could have hoped.  Certainly there are some problems (codes for produce and bulk items), but for the most part it is wonderful.

Who knew Horlicks had such a history?

Quote

In Hong Kong, Horlicks is known better as a café drink than a sleeping aid. It is served at cha chaan tengs as well as fastfood shops such as Café de Coral and Maxim's Express. It can be served hot or cold, and is usually sweetened with sugar. It is almost always made with warm milk, and ice is added to it if a cold drink is desired.

The product's name has entered the vernacular as a substitute for the profanity "bollocks". This was exploited by the company in a 1990s advertising campaign, in which a harassed housewife exclaims "Horlicks" in a context where a stronger term could have been expected, thus widening the term's exposure and usage for a while.

The term was used in July 2003 by British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw ("a complete Horlicks") to describe irregularities in the preparation and provenance of a dossier regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

RE: the self-check lanes.

A bunch of grocery stores here have them. And walmart got them too recently.

I personally don't really like them that much.  But i know a lot of pople who do.  They are convenient if the lines are long, or if you only have a couple of items. But i'm not crazy about using them for fruits and veggies (that don't have stickers on them with the code).

Here there are about 8 self-cashes and there are usually one or two cashiers assigned to help.  I'd say that after doing it once most people don't require help on how it works.  But often the machine doesn't do something right and the cashier has to override it.

The first time i used the one at walmart the place for the credit card and where the receipt comes out were in a different place. So that took me a few minutes!

I have used the ones at the grocery store about a dozen times, but mostly when i go with my mom (cause she likes to use them). I personally don't think it is faster. ANd since you have to pack groceries yourself at most grocery stores here that part does not make a difference to me either way!

Just checking my Alamo rental car receipt....they do charge a lot of taxes!

Airport Concession Fee $18.00
Tourism fee $4.00
Sales tax $20.85

I sure hope California puts it all to good use.

However I didn't understand the "Unauthorized drop charge = $75.00"...turns out Alamo claimed I picked up the car in Burbank and dropped it off in San Francisco. Fortunately I cleared that up.

Good thing I checked.

Yes! Let's say it loud and clear: Jamie Foxx is lousy in the film! And... did he had a sore throat! Could hardly understand him! >:(

It's so wonderful that, one day, we'll all be dealing with "automats" and NO real person around... We all will become "automats" repair people or ... unemployed! Is that progress?! :-\

This was the episode that used the "laugh 'n sniff" cards as they called them. The most authentic aroma was buttered popcorn. Others that I remember were cologne, new car smell, and Oreo cookies.

DR SWW -

True.  But, perhaps, job security?

;)

I suspect not. Woody said:

Quote
My hunch is, we're going to have a cashier helping the customers for a good percentage of the time, one per self-checkout register.

What he failed to note is that, although one clerk/register might be needed, the local management will be allocated hours for one, perhaps two, clerks for all four. The union can protect current employee head count from incroaching technology, but management is free to significantly reduce the hours of part-time help - which helps explain why management essentially only utilizes part-timers (and helps explain why unionized retailers rely so heavily on part-time help).

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2007/05/03/tune-thursday-how-a-fine-tuned-tarzan-now-wows-theater-fans-in-the-netherlands.aspx

How a fine-tuned "Tarzan" now wows theater fans in the Netherlands
Jim Hill talks about some of the tweaks & fixes that were made to the first international production of Disney Theatrical's newest musical. Which debuted at Holland's Circustheatre back on April 15th

Broadway insiders were said to be stunned when they heard about these reviews:

“Visual effects truly out of this world ... A worthy successor to ' The Lion King' ” -- Metro
    *

““Spectacular aerial acrobatics, rocking pop songs and true passion are but a few of the ingredients of (this) dynamic musical” -- SP!TS

The cast of Disney's first international production of "Tarzan," Broadway's High Flying

    *

"Larger than its American predecessor ... A true jaw-dropper" -- NRC Handelsbad
    * “Pulling out all the stops to create a true spectacle” -- TROUW

Wait a minute. These were really-for-real critics saying nice things about "Tarzan" ? The musical that the New York Times called " ... a writhing green blob with music' ? How is that possible ?

Well, first of all, this is the first international production of this new Disney musical that we're talking about here. More importantly, this is a version of the show that's been tweaked and plussed by both "Tarzan" 's original creative team as well as by theatrical producer & media tycoon Joop van den Ende.

Mind you, it was easy for Joop's staff to work together with Disney Theatrical on the fine-tuning of "Tarzan" 's first international production. After all, van den Ende's company, Stage Entertainment and the Mouse had been co-producing shows for more than a decade now. And between the two of them, they've mounted six Disney musicals and entertained tens of millions of people all over Europe.
Title: Re:CUT ME SOME SLACK
Post by: François on May 04, 2007, 02:32:54 PM
Which was why -- long before the original Broadway production of "Tarzan" had actually begun previewing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre -- Disney Theatrical was inviting van den Ende's creative team to come over to the U.S. So that they could then get some sense of the sort of show that Bob Crowley and his co-horts were trying to put together.

So back in early 2006, Joop's troupe flew over to New York City and visited with the "Tarzan" cast as they rehearsed on Stage 2 at Steiner Studios in the old Brooklyn Navy Yard. Van den Ende's people watched as aerial designer Pichon Baldinu put the performers through their paces, swinging & dangling from harnesses while high above the soundstage floor.

Joop's creative team also reviewed many of the concepts that Disney Theatrical had originally considered for "Tarzan." And among these was staging this new musical inside of a vast open arena a la Cirque de Soleil. With the actors often performing directly over the heads of the audience.

Recognizing that the Circustheatre (I.E. The 1800-seat venue where Stage Entertainment would be presenting the European premiere of "Tarzan") would actually lend itself better to the original concept of the show, Joop's staff decided that their version of this new Disney musical would feature much more flying over the audience. More moments when the cast would swing straight out over the heads of those people seated in the front orchestra section.

And seeing as Disney Theatrical had cast "American Idol" finalist Josh Strickland in the title role of their new musical, van den Ende's team decided to go Mickey one better by building an entire reality series around their search for the perfect Tarzan. That program, entitled "Wie Wordt Tarzan ?," debuted on Dutch television in the Fall of 2006, with over 800 performers initially auditioning for this part. Joop's staff was eventually able to winnow that talented group down to five finalists. Who then competed against one another to prove who was the very best performer when it came to acting, singing and dancing. (You can actually see an excerpt from this program -- where four of the finalists swap out playing a scene with this production's Jane, Chantal Janzen -- by clicking on this link.)

Title: Re:CUT ME SOME SLACK
Post by: François on May 04, 2007, 02:34:59 PM

In the end, it was this show's viewers (Who voted via the Internet) who selected Ron Link to play the title role in the first international production of "Tarzan." FYI: Just like Josh Strickland, Link had once been a finalist on Holland's version of "American Idol."

Anyway ... Thanks to "Wie Wordt Tarzan ?," Dutch theater fans were now well aware of this new Disney musical months prior to its official premiere at Circustheatre. Which really helped boost advance ticket sales for "Tarzan" 's first international production.

Of course, by this time, the Broadway version of "Tarzan" had been open for several months. And Joop's creative team were well aware of all of the underwhelming reviews that Disney's newest musical had received stateside.

Now, this news might have discouraged a lesser group of showmen. But not Joop van den Ende's staff. Working directly with "Tarzan" 's original creative team (Who actually welcomed a chance to revisit the show), Joop's troupe identified many ways that this show could be improved and plussed.

Chief among these was bringing Sergio Trujillo to redo much the show's choreography. Best known these days for that he recently did on the Broadway smash, "Jersey Boys," Sergio reworked many of the numbers that Australian contemporary ballet star Meryl Tankard had originally done for "Tarzan."

Joop's group also insisted that -- in order to make the most of the Circustheatre's performance space -- that more Cirque de Soleil moments be folded into the show. Take -- for example -- how Jane makes her entrance in the Dutch production. Instead of just walking out on stage, Miss Porter now enters from the back of the hall and walks through the audience.

Mind you, what adds to the fun of this moment in the show is -- as Jane comes down the aisle -- Tarzan suddenly appears high above the floor of Circustheatre's auditorium. Literally hanging above the audience seated in the hall, the ape man then observes this beautiful creature as she carefully makes her way through the jungle.

Let me stress here that we're not talking about radical surgery here. This was refining, not retooling. Just a few nips and tucks. A re-choreographed scene here, a new lyric (Provided by Phil Collins himself, by the way) there. Now add in van den Ende's truly inspired promotion of the first international production of "Tarzan" coupled with the fact that this new Disney musical is now being staged inside a theater that actually lends itself to all of Pichon Baldinu's flying & bungee-ing ... And Disney Theatrical (And Stage Entertainment, of course) now has a hit musical on its hands. In Holland, anyway.

So the big question now becomes ... Will any of these changes be incorporated into the Broadway version of "Tarzan" ? Well, Disney Theatrical did make changes to the Broadway version of "The Lion King" after the London production of that show opened in 1999. Why For? Because Julie Taymor restaged some of the numbers for this Tony Award winning musical so that they'd then better fit the performance space at the Lyceum. And Taymor was so pleased with these changes that she had them folded into the Broadway version of "The Lion King."

Similarly, new bits of stage business that proved to be successful in the road companies of this Broadway smash eventually found their way into the original version of "The Lion King." So it's not like Disney Theatrical hasn't done something like this before.

The only problem is ... Given the physical set-up of the Richard Rodgers Theatre, it's going to be extremely hard to incorporate many of the changes that have been made for "Tarzan" 's first international production into the Broadway version of the show. But -- that said -- that still doesn't mean that the folks at Disney Theatrical won't fold these pluses & improvements into any future productions of their newest musical.

You know what's ironic about all this? Disney Theatrical fixed "Tarzan" the way that Broadway producers have been fixing troubled shows for more than a century now. By taking it on the road. Way, way, way on the road, admittedly. All the way to Holland. But -- in the end -- the critics agree. "Tarzan" is now a much better show for having made that journey

Well, here's hoping that Disney Theatrical's next production -- "The Little Mermaid" (Which begins its out-of-town try-out on July 26th in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts ) -- really benefits from its time on the road.

I wasn't aware of the existence of this until just now!  I just bought a mint condition copy on ebay for $5.99.

Thank you...and thank you and Colin! ;D

Tomorrow (to me), the family is all going out to a local Mexican restaurant.  Then we'll have dessert at my parents' house!  It'll all be quite delicious!

"Please join me Hell this Friday evening at 8 o'clock."

And when a co-worker proclaims: "Damn you, George" - you can off-handlly reply - "Already done - see you Friday at 8!"

And the theatre party invites; "Join us in watching that Damned George burn in Hell, Friday at 8!"

Oh, my, the waste of war!

And this is from a simple war at a less complicated time.

The real "waste" is surely the lack of "lessons learned".

(A history buff would regale bore you with the direct causal links between WWI and the conflicts of the 21st Century in both Europe and the Middle East nearly 100 years later.)

Peruvians Drink Frog Smoothies to Gain Potency
Friday , May 04, 2007
LIMA, Peru —

Carmen Gonzalez plucks one of the 50 frogs from the aquarium at her bus stop restaurant, bangs it against tiles to kill it and then makes two incisions along its belly and peels off the skin as if husking corn.

She's preparing frog juice, a beverage revered by some Andean cultures for having the power to cure asthma, bronchitis, sluggishness and a low sex drive.

A drink of so-called "Peruvian Viagra" sells for about 90 cents.

Gonzalez adds three ladles of hot, white bean broth, two generous spoonfuls of honey, raw aloe vera plant and several tablespoons of maca — an Andean root also believed to boost stamina and sex drive — into a household blender.

Then she drops the frog in.

Once strained, the result is a starchy, milkshake-like liquid that stings the throat.

DR Cillaliz - I've spent my day catching up on book review journals and have just read in the April 9, 2007, Publishers Weekly about the bookselling landscape in Iowa.  Did you know that Iowans read more books per capita than the residents of any other state?  And have you ever been to Prairie Lights in Iowa City?

I'm not surprised, everyone reads here.  Yes, I've been to Prairie Lights many times.  I was there when I was in school and it was a little book shop and I've been back many times now that it's a large store.  It's been a couple years since I've been to Iowa City, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's even larger than it was when I was there

I think I'm going to scout in furniture stores for dining room tables that I could use as a conference table this weekend.  I saw one at Pier One, but it was a little too rustic. So I'll keep looking. I have a feeling I can find something nice for a lot less than ordering a "real" office conference table.   My line of credit is coming through next week. It's not a home equity loan and the interest rate is over 1 percent lower than the young pup wanted to give me.  Ha!

I don't have a DVD player and I'm not listening to Artaxerxes, so I don't have any media to report, so here's conversation I had recently with a four-year-old named Avery who had recently thrown up into a trash can.

Avery: Look, Cassandra. I made this. It came from a part of my body.
Me: Was it your stomach?
Avery: How did you know?
Me: I've been around, Avery. I've been around.

I had a nice evening of TV viewing.

I began by finishing the PRIVATE SCREENINGS interview with Lauren Bacall. She did touch on her stage career during the show, and they played her singing "Welcome to the Theater" for the first time on the Tony Awards. Otherwise, though, it was about her movies, but only some of them. And not a single mention of her marriage to Jason Robards, Jr. I know it was a tempestuous marriage, but it did produce children.

Next I watched last night's hilarious episode of THE OFFICE, another home run for the folks at Dunder Mifflin including Michael's jaunt to the mall with the ladies at the office, and Dwight searching for a flasher.

GHOST WHISPERER had a frightening episode, but I'm not quite sure why the guy who can also see spirits disappears with them in her visions. He's not dead, so if he's there, he should be flesh and blood.

There has been a lot of speculation about the person close to Melinda who may die, and to me, it's obvious it's going to be Jay Mohr's character. That's just a guess, mind you. I have read no spoilers or inside information, but they've tried to keep the spotlight on David Conrad and Camryn Manheim, so common snese would dictate they're trying to steer us away from the one who's really going to die.

At 9 p.m., with nothing on network TV, I watched last night's SUPERNATURAL, a completely absorbing episode with Dean's view of what life could have been like had they not turned into evil hunters. And it was heartbreaking to see him realize what was really going on, cleverly evolving into a much more typical SUPERNATURAL episode. The show has really been on a roll the last few weeks with challenging and very unusual episodes.

LAW & ORDER had a very mundane outing with an obvious to spot murderer that it took everyone on the show about 3/4 of the show to realize. The trial sequences were really by the numbers especially McCoy's closing argument which was one of the weaker ones in the entire history of the show.

I also watched earlier in the evening Tuesday night's LAW & ORDER: SVU, an episode that will likely be seriously considered for Mariska Hargitay's award season submission. Is her long unknown brother a rapist. The show had some surprises and some very intense drama.

I'll never forget a very very ill Bea Arthur croaking her way through "Fifty percent," barely hitting a note, and then at the end gesturing toward Billy Goldenberg at the piano, saying "The composer, Billy Goldenberg, ladies and gentlmen."  He looked like he wanted to hide under the piano.

I took a nap.

I watched EMERGENCY HOSPITAL (1956)

I have watched an hour of what appears to be a 3 hour Bollywood movie called AYA SAWAN JHOOM KE (1969)...and an hour into it I still do not know what the plot is...but it is colorful and has pretty people in it and it is oddly entertaining.
