Well, you've read the notes, you that you must start spreadin' the news because I'm comin' to New York, New York, so now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're spreadin' the moos.

BK, I am glad you liked WEIRD WOMAN..it is one of my all time favorite films and has been since I was a tiny tot.
I met Anne Gwynne at the Ray Courts show a few years back...she had had a stroke and couldn't communicate well, but seemed to be enjoying herself...she was there with her daughter Gwynne Gilford. She did a LOT of Universal movies in the 40s. Unfortunately, she has since passed.
And of course the movie also had Evelyn Ankers (in a rare negative role), Elizabeth Russell, and the adorable Lois Collier!
-
Have a safe and fun trip bk!!
SAfe trip vibes........

A few comments from yesterday's discussions...
I have only seen one Jerry Lewis movie and that was Nutty professor and it was a hoot.
Laura, I love your photographs, you are a talented photographer...
I am going to have to go torment someone with Cable to see Closer. I refuse to pay the exorbitant cable fees in this area which hover around 60 for basic. Not sure we get the Food Channel here but we do get the Food Network.

Good morning, all! I am up too early but I have an action-packed day, the afternoon of which is tied up with a band rehearsal for THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. This morning, I have some other work to accomplish in the recording office and some shopping for a few office supplies.

A moment of silence, please, for the lack of a word for the day...
:'(

I've been up, and back to bed, and up again, and back to bed again, since four-thirty this morning. (That's one-thirty HHWDST (Haines His Way Daylight Savings Time).)
This is not because I wanted to be up/back/up/back. Our smoke alarm has decided to act up.
I was in the middle of a very enjoyable dream, the details of which are now obliterated, when this shreeking BLEEEEP kept repeating in the middle of the night. Der Brucer, whom I had to nudge awake (he can sleep through anything, and is mentioned in Guiness' in a footnote), told me to turn on the stove hood's fan and open the back door. That worked for a while, but presently the BLEEEEPING started again. There was no evidence of any fire, or anything that could have set off the alarm. It's just too dang sensitive. If we showed it those pics of Pogue half naked on stage, it would BLEEEEP.
I've somehow had enough sleep for the night, and should do OK at work, but it is still very frustrating.

And now, our esteemed BK is browsing, while getting ready for his flight.
Good travel vibes, BK!

Dear Edisaurus:
Good Morning!
You may note that I referred to BK as "Esteemed BK" in the previous post.
That is the formal mode of addressing our host here at HHW.
The informal, but convivial, mode of address is, of course, a simple "BK." Both are acceptable.
-
I shall now be on my way to New York, New York!
-
A moment of silence, please, for the lack of a word for the day...
:'(
I'll try to supplement by mentioning my favorite word that was used here over the last few days: LURID!
When I was young, I would peruse the TV Guide the day it arrived, and if anything was deemed a "lurid melodrama", I was there! (Tourist Trap, Homicidal or some of William Castle's other films, Dead of Winter, etc.) "Grand Guignol" seemed to be synonym for this type of film. If the acting was bad, so much the better.
Maybe I grew up and got out in the world and found out that stuff like this acutally happens, but these type of films don't appeal to me as much anymore. But I will still check them out for old time's sake on Mondo Movie Nights at our local drive-in, where they run a lot of old exploitation films and even better yet, the cheesy hype-y trailers for those films!
So my topic would be: what are your favorite "LUUUUURRID" films?
-
Gmorning, Ben.
Gmorning, Swoody.

btb (by the bye in Internet Lingo), Ben, thanks for giving me Mr. Rod Zinski's number yesterday, so I could alert him to our Ozian dinner plans. He was a welcome adition, althought DR Tpunk could not make it.
Also, for any other earlly risers, or also late risers, come to think of it, you can click here to see the St. Croix beach in a morning view (http://www.gotostcroix.com/live/image.jpg). The image is about 25 minutes behind time, but you get a new one with a Refresh every couple of minutes.

Oooh, I see someone in the ocean.
It might be my DP Joe.
Gmorning, Edisaurus.

Here I am, wireless, and reporting live from the Continental Airlines President's Club, which is lovelier than lovely. The ride here was very quick with no traffic, and happily I went right through security without a hitch (I guess I could have brought some moisturizer after all). We board in about thirty minutes.
If it's this smooth getting Ye Olde Computer up and running at the hotel I shall be very happy indeed.
-
Sunday morning greetings!
Tried to get here in time to wish BK a smooth flight and wonderful week in NYC, but I think I just missed him. Oh, well, it's the thought that counts.
-
Speaking of THE CLOSER (which i also love) It has started here in Canada (we don't get TNT). Tomorrow will be our third episode.
The last episode with Brenda's (kyra) mother was so good. Yeah!
-
Also tonight we have a new AMAZING RACE. And the premiere of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Double yeah!
And after that the new show with Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters) will be on at 10pm.
I am not sure if i will be able to watch TAR live (or for DR RLP when it is on at 8pm) because we are having a special dinner at 6pm.
-
Good morning all, happy Sunday!
-
I have no great excuse for being so E&T other than I've spent the last 2 weeks getting settled at my new job, in my new office, with my new coworkers, and most importantly with my new kids. I definitely feel like taking this job was the right choice to make. It's great to be back in that setting, and I'm becoming more familiar with the ins and outs of residential care. Last year I only had day treatment cases. So all in all, so far so good. Exhausting but good.
-
I'm still working a few hours a week at GMHC (which is why I was unable to meet up with Tomovoz and gang yesterday) and will continue to do so for another month or so. I want to keep my HIV experience current on my resume and the extra money ain't bad either.
-
Jennifer I'll be watching the Calista Flockhart show too. I'm very interested to see it, the cast looks great.
-
Will you forgive me, DR William F Orr, if I don't wish to think of our Esteemded BK as "departed"? Somehow, that word is filled with connotations! Some of them could even be LURID! He's gone to a better place? No, that's not quite right, either. In any case, he's taking HHW with him!
-
Unfortunately today I will also be missing the group's get together. I made plans many moons ago to go apple picking in the country. It's my little touch of nature for the fall.
-
MBarnum, you do have the most exceptional taste in films! Would you fill the newer members here in on how that developed and just what appeals to you in these flicks? Also, I must ask: given your love of Bollywood, do you also love curries and such? (You seem like a good sport and I hope you don't mind being interogated!)

Oops! Sorry about the wording. Well, at least we know that once he gets to New York he will have no time to rest in peace.

Sorry you couldn't grace our little party ith your presence yesterday, but it was nice to hear your lilting voice on the telephone briefly.

If we knew the flight number, we could track MR BK across the country... Alas, it was not provided. :(
-
I purchased WEIRD WOMAN on VHS where it is presented along with THE FROZEN GHOST (I think) - nice evening of lurid entertainment.
My favorite LURID drama is indeed a William Castle production HOMICIDAL!!!
-
Acquanetta - according to Richard Lamparski - she married a wealthy car dealer in Arizona - became the television spokeswoman for the business, and never looked back.
-
I remember Acquanetta doing car commercials a loooong time ago.
-
Acquanetta passed away in 2004. She and her husband had divorced in the 1980's. They had four sons.
DR EDISAURUS, I think you can safely assume that any film she appeared in could be called lurid. 8)
Acquanetta nee Mildred Davenport of Ozone, Arizona, was dubbed by Universal Studios the Venezuelan Volcano. :P

-
Good Morning!
I'm up! I'm up! So much to do! So much to do!
-But that's a good thing. :)
-
In any case, I do hope the forecasted bad weather does not delay bk's flight into Newark, nor his trek from the airport into The Big Apple. *I suspect that that trip may end up being a bit more hassle-filled - as opposed to Hasselhoffed - due to the way the rain makes people drive. And since a a bridge and/or tunnel is bound to be involved... But again...
Safe travels.
-
DR TPunk - Good to see you again!
-
See... Just like Madonna sang... Sooner or later, we all come back. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. But we all come back.
:)
-
DR TPunk - how nice to see your sweet smile! Too bad you've had to miss the recent get-togethers (or would that be gets-together?). How's your schedule for this coming week when BK's in town and next week when several DRs (and my DH) will be there?
-
Well, I must get ready to meet the HHW Contingent from Down Under. I really am looking forward to seeing Tom and Colin again - they were such wonderful hosts to me when I was in Melbourne a few years ago.
And then it looks the rest of my day will also be HHW-themed... :)
So, until later...

Please, friends, stop me! I've spent more than an hour looking for my NYC Metrocard from last January. You see, DH Richard still has his and it's good until Nov. 30, 2006. Mine is nowhere to be found. I know I can just get another one, but it's so uncharacteristic for him to have saved something like that and me to have discarded it. Someone, please, tell me to give it up!

Good morning!
We're back to late summer now with temps in the 80s and lows only in the low 70s. My central A/C popped on during the night since the house was so muggy. I'm sure it'll be running a good bit today, too. Tomorrow should bring some relief.
-
I remember Acquenetta from TARZAON AND THE AMAZONS. One of my favorite Weismeuller RKO Tarzan films.
-
Looking forward to THE MOON SPINNERS this afternoon. Should be fun. Then, I'll go back to disc 2 of GREY'S ANATOMY.
-
I also plan on watching BROTHERS & SISTERS tonight after DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. I'll be DVRing COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE. Those two will probably start late due to football overruns anyway.
-
Good morning. I was supposed to get up in time to take the hound to the park for the weekend gathering with his friends. I woke up very early - then went back to sleep and missed it. Bad dog mom!
I have three books to finish today - one a favorite book from childhood that I'm re-reading. Happily it's turned out to be just as wonderful as I remembered it to be - even more so. Any of you fans of the Freddy the Pig series by the wonderful Walter R. Brooks? Now that I've reread the first one (Freddy Goes to Florida), I'll go back and reread the rest of the series. I can't tell you how much I loved them as a child!
-
Check ALL your pockets DRGINNY...
LOL, DR JRand! I've looked in pockets of garments I didn't even own last January!

Speaking of THE CLOSER (which i also love) It has started here in Canada (we don't get TNT). Tomorrow will be our third episode.
The last episode with Brenda's (kyra) mother was so good. Yeah!
DR Jennifer, I'm surprised you don't have TNT, since they have a presence in Europe, Asia and Latin America. What network carries the show for you?
I LOVE Francis McDormand as Brenda's mother. Originally, they were throwing around the idea of Joanne Woodward, another Southerner who grew up across the square from my house, (on the Alton Brown side!) but once I saw and heard FMcD, I really believed she could be the mom! Her accent really matched Brenda's too, which is unusual---a lot of times people do their own brand of southern accent and they don't match. It's very regional...Henry Higgins would have had a lot of fun studying the Southern accent!
-

Favorite lurid movies..H. G. Lewis' made in Florida films BLOOD FEAST (1963) and 2000 MANIACS (1964).
1968s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
1957s REFORM SCHOOL GIRL
1958s HOT CAR GIRL
Oh, gosh, there are so many more I am sure.

DR Jeanne,
My fascination for unusual films began as a tiny tot. I watched so much TV as a kid and never missed the Saturday afternoon Chiller Diller matinee or during the summer months, Dialing for Dollars...so I saw many an AIP and Allied Artists horror and sci-fi, Toho Kaiju films, Italian muscleman epics, Universal B westerns, lurid melodramas, etc.
I remember that my first two favorite actresses as a small kid were Yvonne DeCarlo and Lori Nelson.
Attack of the Puppet People and Earth Vs. The Spider have been my two top favorites since I was in the second grade.
-
As for my continued interest in thes "psychotronic" films...they have such a nostalgic feel for me and some, like the films of Ed Wood or Herschel Gordon Lewis fascinate me for the fact that, disregarding any talent or prior experience they may or may not have had, these film makers still persued their dream of making movies.
And the movies are fun and make me feel happy when I watch them.
-
I'm sure you mean Frances Sternhagen as she actually plays Brenda's mother. And she deserves a guest actor Emmy nomination next year for her performance. I adored her episodes this past season.
DUUUHHHHHH...I should be fired! My excuse: I hadn't had my 3 shot latte yet!
-
My Bollywood obsession began when BK discussed the Indian version of Agatha Christie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS titled GUMNAAM (1963). It sounded like fun so I bought it and along with a few compilation DVDs containing just the musical scenes from various newer Bollywood movies.
Now I am hooked and can't seem to get enought Bollywood!
-
And I have fun finding new favorites in film...I have discovered the joy of Toshiro Mifune and his early Kurosawa films and I have begun to really enjoy Egyptian cinema, particularly their 1940s and 50s comedies. Also I am finding that Japan has made some very cute little comedies in the last few years similar in vain to SHALL WE DANCE...and thanks to JRand53 I am getting hooked on Mexican melodramas of the 40s, 50s, and 60s...having long enjoyed their crazy horror and sci-fi films it is fun to find that their other genres can be just as kooky!

DR MBarnum, you would love DriveInvasion, our Labor Day exploitation extravaganza!
http://www.starlightdrivein.com/
Two years ago, they showed both of these films, and one of their special guests was the producer, David Friedman. They also showed his film "Trader Hornee", which was like a porn film without the sex! And another goodlurid film, "Spider Baby". Another favorite I saw at the Starlight was "Mondo Teeno", also known as "Teenage Rebellion". I've been on the lookout for that almost as hard as Ginny's been looking for her Metrocard!
I love Psychotronic magazine and their film guide. Have you checked out the movies on http://www.somethingweird.com/

Last night at the Symphony I looked across the aisle and there was the mother and daughter who considered adopting Boo when we were in the midst of kitty civil war in June. The mother said the daughter asks about Bootsie often. I assured her that Bootsie (now Boo) has a good home and that she is happy with her sister. They requested photos, so I sent some this morning.
I have to say that seeing them, all I could think is they would have provided a good home, but I'm so glad that it didn't happen. Boo curled up with me all night last night and was purring like crazy. They haven't fought once today. You'd almost think she knew.

This is my version of Boo. Her name is Ociee. She's the stray we fixed and set about looking for a good home for her. Found one where she would have been queen of the house instead of struggling for position with my 3 other cats. But after caring for her for 2 weeks post-surgery, it broke my heart to give her up.
She hid the entire first week at her new home, so we went to check on her and she came out of hiding. We brought her home and she's been the happiest cat ever, even shows a lot of love to the other kitties. And she has picked up the habit of sleeping on the rabbits under the coffee table, like our other cats do. Unlike the others, Ociee plays the piano every day!

She's been a great cat, apart from being the one that wakes me up at 5AM for her "treat"! (Uusally by shredding important tax paperwork!) All the others let us sleep until she came along. I guess she feels that taking a bullet for the others is her contribution to the feline community.
Here she is, directly after surgery, practicing her cross paws piece!

thanks for filling me in. I adore British drama, but it took me a little while to warm up to it, I admit. I also adore Indian food, though I've never learned to love Indian music and have never given Bollywood a try. Yes, there are worlds out there yet to be explored!

Dr Edisaurus - Ociee is a cutie. I know what you mean about being attached after surgery. That's when I really got attached to Boo. I wanted to keep her, but was afraid she and Callie would kill each other. They're finally getting along. Whew!

Jeanne, if you want to start with a great Bollywood film, try MY BROTHER NIKHIL. Mr. Barnum turned me on to that film, and it is quite wonderful.

Is Matt Officer Lockstock? If so, his picture's on the write-up!
That's the best role in the show, IMHO. I saw it twice on Broadway (with 2 different Bobby Strongs) and once with the touring co. in Atlanta. I LOVE that show!

DR Edisaurus,
A fun thing about Herchel Gordon Lewis' BLOOD FEAST (1963) is that he made, that same year, a nudie movie called GOLDILOCKS AND THE 3 BARES in which he used mostly the same cast...however he spent much less on the costuming. I am a big fan of the made in Florida nudie films of the late 50s and early 60s, also...they are so much fun! And many of them are musicals, believe it or not! LOL!
And I have bought many a movie from Something Weird Video, oh yes!

Yes, he does. He was also in Deceit, a play written by Bruce Kimmel. Both Bruce and Matt handed in stunning performances.
He was played a serial killer, Stephen Haver, on One Live to Live. He was sexy and creepy at the same time.

Yesteray, Edisaurus wrote about her name:
I think every dentist, soda jerk and garbageman knew that song, and wasn't shy about singing it to me. I had a brief respite in the 70's between generations whne people forgot about the Loesser song, until Pure Prairie League came out with their song: "Amy (Whatcha Gonna Do)" and then it started all over again!
And don't forget about Sondheim's "Multitude of Amys" (even though it's a fairly obscure song). ;)
-
My sister needs me to help with some stuff outside. I'm staying logged in, but I'm not really here. ::)

For Matt:
The opening sequences of CSI on Thursday (Cirque du Soleil, empty theatre, Vegas night-scape) were some of the best uses of network HDTV I've seen yet.
You're right. The combination of that video resolution and the surround sound was quite an experience! (The Cirque scenes went on too long, I felt, in order to pad the episode, but they were certainly a blast to watch in HD.)
-
Good afternoon!
We never got the rain they forecast. Perhaps it will come tonight, but it did cloud up for awhile. We just never got any rain. Back to partially blue skies now and very humid outside.
-
I began my afternoon with THE MOON-SPINNERS. It's a tiny bit too long, but there are lots of adventures and intrigue to spare in the film. I'm sure I saw bits and pieces of it on THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR many years ago, but I had no memory of it. I saw most Disney films in the theater back during those years, but I don't think I saw this one.
Yes, Disney shamefully presented the DVD in full frame rather than doing an anamorphic 1.66:1 (MARY POPPINS) or 1.75:1 (like SUMMER MAGIC) transfer of some other films from that same period. Even so, it looked very good in rich Technicolor. I had the TV reframe the image, and it fit the 1.78:1 ratio of the widescreen TV perfectly. It was a fun yarn to start Sunday afternoon.
-
I did have some phone calls interrupt the afternoon, but I managed to watch two episodes of GREY'S ANATOMY from the second disc in the boxed set.
The first I had seen: the infamous episode with the train wreck casulties featuring the pole impailing two people at the same time. The first time I saw the episode I cried at what was happening (while also laughing at Christina's tribulations trying to find the severed leg). This time around, without the benefit of commercials to help bring someone back to reality, I cried profusely. What a beautifully written, heartrending episode.
-
The second one on the disc I hadn't seen: the one with the "pregnant" man. Another wonderful episode mixed with deep emotion and hearty laughs, and a kiss to end the episode that was swoon-worthy.
It's a great show.
-
That second episode also helped explain the bond between George and Burke (the heart on fire in the OR) which I had never seen a valid explanation for in any episodes I had watched.
-
Yesteray, Edisaurus wrote about her name:And don't forget about Sondheim's "Multitude of Amys" (even though it's a fairly obscure song). ;)
DR George, I know that one, too. I have a recording of Mandy Patinkin doing that one. Occasioinally for a multitude of Amys, when I've taken on too many projects!

I'm here in New York, New York, safe and sound. The flight was excellent. There was a LOT of traffic coming in from Newark - took about fifty minutes to get to the hotel.
This hotel will be a challenge - the room is a "double" - it's basically the size of a large walk-in closet with a bed. No dresser, but it does have high-speed Internet and a stall shower. Not quite as small as the Paramount, but not exactly a room for a claustrophobic either. Well, I shall now unpack and then go out and buy some toiletries and maybe a pair of jogging shoes.
-
Hi, BK - glad to see you've arrived safely in NYC! I've been watching the Kevin Spirtas DVD and now I'm listening to the commentary. Is he touring with the show?

Have to go clean my bath now. Then, will read more about Eileen Heckart, and then resume TV watching.

Sorry gang, I'm not a judge and never want to be. I'd rather fight for the little guy than be the one who has to decide custody battles....yuck! I used to do divorces, worst kind of practice to have.
-
Dr Edisaurus, I don't work every weekend. But when I have many motions and briefs to do or when, as in this case, the issue isn't crystal clear but my gut tells me that what they did was just plain wrong, I need some time when I'm uninterrupted by phone calls etc. It's easiest to get that on the weekends. I do have all day tomorrow to finish this, so now that I'm pretty clear on the case law and how I need to do this, I may just outline it and do the writing tomorrow.
I have managed to get a couple loads of laundry done and put a pork roast in the oven...it's starting to smell really good...so it hasn't been all work today

I thought bad batteries "chirped" not howled!
(Altho the batteries are a few years old)
der Brucer
"They" used to say that fire/smoke alarm batteries should be changed twice a year...at the beginning of Daylight Saving Time and then at the end of Daylight Saving Time, but that's not going to work anymore. Starting next year, DST starts three weeks earlier than before (in the middle of March instead of the beginning of April) and ends a week later (the first weekend of November instead of the last weekend of October). So that means that we now will have about four months of "real" time and eight months of Daylight Saving Time! That's not a good schedule for changing batteries. :-\
-
BK, glad you made it to NYC ok. Have a great time there.

According to THIS (http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html) website:
On August 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates for Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. Beginning in 2007, DST will begin on the second Sunday of March and end the first Sunday of November. The Secretary of Energy will report the impact of this change to Congress. Congress retains the right to revert the Daylight Saving Time back to the 2005 time schedule once the Department of Energy study is complete.

I don't see how they think this is going to impact anything, so I use more electricity and turn the furnace up earlier in the morning. I thought the original intent was to give farmers more daylight later in the day to do work outside. I think this is just a gesture that really has no impact

Welcome to NY, BK! Take a bite out of the big apple for me!
-
I've changed rooms - I almost was going to stay put (the new room is about four inches bigger, but doesn't have a stall shower - just the usual bath shower), but the other room had a persistent "hum" coming from somewhere and I knew that I wouldn't be able to sleep with it. So, I'm on the fifth floor instead of the sevent - the hotel only has seven floors.
-
Shortly I shall be on my way to Fred and Skip's. I'm trying to figure out the air conditioning in the room - when it's on it's way too cold for me, even if you put the thermostat to seventy-six. So, I think I'll do without because the air will kill my voice.
I'm going to look for some shoes whilst walking over to 43rd.
-
Yo, all the gang in NYC!!! Have a great time... I covet your There-ness!!!
Tomorrow is a full school day! Three lower-division make-up classes in Oral Communication, Critical Thinking and Biology -- plus an upper division class in my major - MUSIC - called Song Literature: French. As a recitalist, a hundred years ago, I specialized in French Impressionist song lit!!! I'll just sing through all my favorite repertory, and that's the class!!! How thrilling this will be, to get my chops back in form... Ah, the old days!! I did love my four years at Juilliard, have thought of them so fondly through the years... and now, I get to be back in a music department, among the young hopefuls. Really bittersweet and resonant... I look behind me and see their future.

I will never understand how anyone thinks you can make more daylight.

I just read HERE (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/102294.html) on Playbill.com that Patrick Quinn has died from a heart attack. He was only 55 years old. He was on the first cast recording of Lucky $tiff (http://www.castalbumdb.com/rec.cfm?TNumber=779&RNumber=1437) by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty that was produced by BK. :(
-
Yikes, gotta go get some Diet Coke. :)
-
Well, I'm off to my sister's for dinner. Later.
-
Yes, a friend e-mailed me earlier today about Patrick Quinn. It's shocking and very, very sad! He was just appointed as the new executive director of Actor's Equity. He was to replace Alan Eisenberg who retired after over 20 years of service. What sad news. Patrick was a great person as well as a dedicated Union member.

On a brighter note, we had a loverly afternoon with Tom and Colin, our cousins from Down Under. We met at their hotel and chatted in the lobby for a while. It was Tom, Colin, Rodzinski, Jose, Anthony and me. We then ambled over to Ninth Avenue and 46th Street to the Galaxy Diner. It was crowded but a table for six was arranged and we had a lovely brunch. We lingered for quite a while and talked and laughed and, I'm sure, we made many ears burn.
What a wonderful, delightful couple are Tom and Colin. We eased Colin's worry that meeting people you only know from the Internet doesn't always result in death and dismemberment.
We also spent some time in Virgin Records on Broadway and 46th Street. Tom kindly purchased a DVD and gave it to us (Ben and Anthony) as a present. The movie is Sordid Lives. We look forward to watching it.
Even though it's only 8pm we are settling in for the night and will probably go to bed soon. It's been a full and very good day. We are so glad we finally met our friends from Oz. Now it's our turn to go :-)

Matt had some great one-liners during the days of Classic Days. There were some downright interesting sexual innuendos also. Him and Missy Reeves were a great pair. Classic days is anything between 1980 nad June 1991.

IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116367/) reports:
So we have the first hour, filled with Tarantino-stuff in its dialogue and references, and then the party arrives at a bar called the Titty Twister. Not long after they are inside it is revealed that every crew member from the bar is actually a vampire, feeding themselves on bikers and truckers that visit the place.

Actually, DST provides two benefits. First, by having more afternoon/early evening daylight, we reduce the afternoon energy peaks. (People use more energy for things like cooking, laundry etc. in the afternoon than they do in the mornings - best to do these things when there is no need for indoor lighting. Remember, it is energy peak loads that are significant, not total energy usage!) Second, the majority of juvenile crime is committed in the after school hours. Experience has shown a decrease in such crime when the daylight hours are extended.

Really? What is Joanne Woodward's connection to Beverly? Or does Beverly have a connection to me that I don't know about? I'm so confused!
Favorite lurid Beverly Garland movie: Swamp Diamonds
Joanne Woodward has donated a lot of money to restoration projects for our square and local theatres. She is extremely generous!
I worked with her on a video for the Carter Center, for a mental health initiative by Rosalynn Carter. She hosted a program about overcoming the stigma of depression. The speakers were Rod Steiger and Cathy Cronkite---Walter's daughter, who had just written a book on the topic.
Rod Steiger's speech was very powerful as he described in great detail how he had planned his suicide but never went through with it.

Personally, I find the best way to overcome the stigma is by talking about it, honestly and without shame. It startles people at first, but then they reveal that they know someone, usually someone close to them, who lives with depression. And they appreciate the openness.
Another part of the life of a grocery cashier!

Watched two more GREY'S ANATOMY episodes. The first, the Thanksgiving episode, I had seen before (one of the first GREY'S episodes I ever watched). However, on the DVD, it is the first one of four expanded episodes.
I honestly couldn't see any extra scenes or scenes with extra footage tacked in them somewhere. It's a fine episode, but the Dad-George talk in the trauma room still bothers me. Very one-sided and, at least from what we saw of his family in this episode, not really accurate, yet George didn't actually defend himself against the charges his dad was making at him.
-
The second episode I watched tonight I hadn't seen. Actually, more enjoyable than the Thanksgiving episode.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES:
spoiler space
1. I LOATHE the character of Nora. I despised her when she was introduced at the end of last season, and this feeling of contempt for her has only gotten worse.
2. The Gabrielle storyline also irritated me mightily tonight. Sniping and complaining and just not funny.
3. As was usual for most of last season, Bree carries the show with this new (dangerous) relationship.
4. For a change, Susan didn't irritate me and actually started a sweet story of her own. Will look forward to seeing how this transpires.

BROTHERS & SISTERS
spoiler space
Didn't grip me much. Yes, I'll continue watching for awhile, but none of the character engaged me very much, and the first half hour was talky, talky, talky to the point of ennui. Things settled down a bit in the second half and let us get to know the brothers and sisters a bit more slowly and in depth.
But I think this is going to have to get A LOT better to capture the kind of fanatical audience that developed so quickly for GREY'S ANATOMY. I have a feeling instead of building on the audience level of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, B&S probably lost audience.

Goodnight all...see you anon!

Good night, Edisaurus. I just got back from my sister's where we had spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner. We also had a almond/marzipan(?) coffee cake for dessert. Delish!

Back from a lovelier than lovely evening with Skip, Fred, Jose, and elmore. What fun we all had. We dished much dirt and we laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we lauged again. I'm back in my "room" - they could make a musical out of this room - The Bed And I. I picked up a Diet Snapple on the way home, and tomorrow morning shall go buy a nice pair of running shoes for running.

I've had a wonderful day, very long but quite wonderful. I accomplished some things at the recording office, then wandered up to 26th street for the band rehearsal for NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. The cellist had done a cabaret act I arranged in 2002 and remembered me; I remembered her excellent playing but not the face.
The rehearsal was long but good. The percussion part was originally a lot of instruments - vibes, bells, timpani, maracas, cymbals, wind chimes, bell tree, whip police whistle - and very little drum writing. Because of the space, the vibes, bells, and timpani are being played on a keyboard. It took about 45 minutes to get the keyboard operating well, and we rehearsed from 1-5:30. After that, I had an hour with my script and score for THER BRAIN FROM PLANET X, and then dinner with our DR Jose, BK, FJL, and Skip. Colin and Tomovoz were invited but they passed since they had to be up early for their train. Skip's dinner was excellent as usual, and our DR Jose and BK were in good form.
Skip told me about Patrick Quinn's death; I met him in 1986 when he played the Noel Coward role opposite Rebecca Luker's Princess in the premiere of my restoration of Cole Porter's JUBILEE. I last worked with him on THE BOYS FROM SYTRACUSE for Encores! He was a kind man, unconventionally handsome, a wonderful actor and singer with a good sense of humor. I didn't know him well but I liked hiom and admired him. I am sorry to know that I will never work with him again.

Heading for bed now.
