I have never seen water polo - a fact I now deeply regret as  the photos have convinced me that it is truly worth watching

ASK BK #2

I am not sure if i asked this question before but......

Did you ever see McKenna's Gold (1969) in the theaters?

I saw the last 30 moinutes or so on Encore tonight and it looks like it was edited down* and/or scenes refilmed as so many of the dialogue and action seems to have been done in front of a process screen.

*As they earthquake hits the three survivors are climbing down the face of the cliff and our quite distance from their horses. and there is a jump cut and they are now at their horses"

I did not see it - I've never actually seen more than the first ten minutes.

Had a lovelier than lovely dinner at the Daily Grill.  They have this new thing where they have like ten dishes 600 calories and under.  I had one, plus a small Caesar and a few bites of strawberry shortcake.  BUT - I know what I'll be doing starting this Friday whenever I possibly can for the next four weeks straight - I'll be going to the Daily Grill and having JUST one of the 600 calorie dishes.  That way, if I'm jogging daily, I will then be able to snack up to 400 calories and still be at 1000 or under - I definitely lose weight quickly if I do that.

I finally took a deep breath and played some of the "Follies" LP tonight... and got to enjoy a few moments of panic when I thought my trusty AR turntable suddenly needed a new belt (as well it should, btw, and that's no big deal) -- or worse, that its motor was dying.  Because "Follies" was playing like a warped record.

But it's not warped.  It's one of those pressings that's off center.  Or the spindle hole is off center.  As the stylus rides the groove, it moves right and left like a driver weaving back and forth between two lanes.  It's horrendous in the Prologue, but evident throughout in sustained passages.

So right off the bat, this copy, at least, is unlistenable.  (DR JRand61, is that how yours sounded?)  But I was able to sit through a few tracks, so I can now say I've heard the original mix and pressing.

Ugh.  And Oy.

Still had to know there wasn't a problem on my end, so I quickly sampled a couple more albums which played just fine.  This turntable and tonearm have tolerated that kind of defect on a few other discs, but this was a severe case.  How perfect.  And I can't in good conscience lay this one on a total stranger, so off to the landfill it goes.

Another long, exhausting day. Thankfully one that did not cost a thousand dollars. (A Sondheim reference, though most of you did get that.) Night, all.

Good Evening!

I saw DOGFIGHT earlier tonight at Second Stage. It's a new musical written by one of the "new musical theatre" writing teams. In this case, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul - Pasek & Paul, and a book by Peter Duchan. And directed by Joe Mantello.

It's based on the 1991 film of the same name that starred River Phoenix, and it centers on three young men and how they spend their last night stateside before being shipped off to Vietnam, which involves a very cruel "party trick". It's a great cast led by the ever-amazing Lindsay Mendez and Derek Klena.

It's definitely a pop-rock score, and I found myself pleasantly surprised by some of its more intricate and intimate moments.

soon to also be represented with A CHRISTMAS STORY - has any songwriting team ever come in with a one-two punch of two scores to major works so quickly AND such different types of shows?
