T.O.D.
I think my two favorite April Fool Jokes both were done on the radio.
Back in the 70s and 80s there was a disc jockey on Seattle's KOMO-Radio by the name of Larry Nelson. Larry was an institution on Seattle radio for over 30 years. Part of his morning show included traffic reports from the KOMO ariplane piloted by Ted Potter. One April 1, Ted Potter broke in with a special report that Vashon Island in Puget Sound had broken free and was floating north towards Seattle. This went on and on between Ted and Larry for about an hour. People were actaully freaking out and started calling 911, City Hall, members of Congress, etc. I laughed my head off at some people's stupidity, but Larry and Ted almost got fired over the whole thing.
The other radio prank started several weeks before April 1 when this "rock station" started announcing that they would be making a special announcement about the future of their station shortly after midnight on April 1. Promptly, at midnight, the manager came on the air and annouced that the station had decided to jump on the band wagon and turn their station format into 100% disco. Now, the problem was that this was very late in the 90s or early 21 century. And the station proceeded to play all disco, all the time for the entire 24 hours. It was great.
