Well, you've read the notes, I hope it did not transpire that the notes caused you ire, dire or otherwise, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - for some reason they got off the plane in Sacramento and haven't been hear from since.

Cookies are called biscuits in OZ.
Favourite - chocolate coated Teddy Bear Biscuits. (DR Jose may have tried those).

Home made biscuits: Anzacs (which are made with rolled oats) and Gingernuts (Made with Golden Syrup and Powdered ginger).  Would the recipes translate?

Homemade cookies are always the best, but I'm afraid I don't often take the time to bake them.

As for store bought cooklies, as a kid, I really loved Sunshine Hydrox (the Oreo copycat cookies which I always found a bit sweeter).

I think Nutter Butters are now to die for, but once I've had one, I can't stop, so I try not to eat them. I do have SOME self-control with Chips Ahoy Chewy Chocolate Chips. And their chewy double chocolate cookies with chips are also very good.

I remember HOUSE CALLS from seeing it the one time at the movie theater. I was just so delighted seeing Glenda Jackson doing a comedy again that I think I liked it more than it deserved. If I remember correctly, as a reviewer, I gave it 2 1/2 stars (my newspaper syndicate made me do 0-4 star ratings on movies).

I know the TV series with Lynn Redgrave ran a season or two, but I was never a fan of it.

And I'll be able to finish ADVISE AND CONSENT at some point today as well. I didn't see much of interest to me on TV tonight (apart from a CSI rerun in hi def), so I'll be DVDing it a good bit today once I get back home.

For packaged cookies,I'm partial to Mother's Iced Circus animals (th origianl colors of pink and white-- not the new colors).  I also love Mother's Iced Raisin Cookies (although they're now hard to find).    I also like those butter cookies with jam in the middle.

For bakery cookies, I like Oatmeal Raisin or White Chocolate Chip.

For home-baked cookies-- just about anything. Although I like the frosted butter cookies we decorate at Christmas (and other excuses like the dogs' birthdays) just about best of all.

Welcome home Bruce.

As I mentioned yesterday when we were talking about the other kind of cookies,

Fresh, warm, chewy oatmeal raisin cookies and crisp ginger snaps. Both with a cold glass of milk. I also will never turn down a chocolate chip cookie.

Favorite cookie as a kid...chocolate chip! Also, those chocolate no-bake cookies...I don't know if they have any other name.

As an adult: Peanut Butter cookies, oatmeal cookies, and still those chocolate no-bake cookies.

Favorite store bought...hmmm...probably Oreos.

Post by: Stuart on June 23, 2005, 06:53:43 AM
I too had a strong preference for Hydrox as a kid, and still do, but they are much harder to find.  Chocolate chip remains a favorite cookie, in all permutations (home made, "mall" versions such as Mrs. Fields, or packaged).

I also fondly recall Burry's Fudgetown, and their Gauchos (?), which were peanut butter sandwich cookies.  I still like Nutter Butters, but I think I liked Gauchos better.

I am a big fan of ELFudge cookies, and even like some of the "new" varieties of them, when I buy cookies lately, which is close to never.  (It's a weight/cholesterol thing.)

There was a period (late High School years, as I recall), when I would eat nothing but Peak Freens.  The dark chocolate biscuits, which were truly scrumptious (an Erin Dilly reference).

And Mallomars!  How could I forget Mallomars????

It’s not rain, but today’s humidity is 85 per cent! The 85 per cent humidity, I think, must be the highest (worst?) discomfort index for human beings and I feel the air so heavy.  And dark gray clouds in the gray sky look very tired of maintaining their shapes, since they have the rain which is about to fall down.  :-\

Good Morning!

-Hey!  I think I could get used to this getting to bed before 1:00am and getting up by 9:00am routine...

;)

In any case...

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!

Like many DRs have mentioned, Chocolate Chip Cookies are a favorite of mine.  They can be store bought or homemade, crispy or cakey.  *The latest double-chip varieties from Chips Ahoy! are pretty good - I usually nuke them for a few seconds to warm the chocolate up.

When I was in Australia, I did indeed try those Chocolate Covered Teddy Bear Biscuits/Cookies, as well as Anzacs and Gingernuts.  All very good.  I had always read about and seen recipes for Anzac Biscuits in various cookbooks - aren't they in "The Joy of Cooking", but never made them or tried them until I was in the land of the Anzac - well, one of the lands...

-I'm trying to remember now - without Googling - Anzac stood for:
A-Australia, NZ-New Zealand, AC - ?? (Auckland - ??)

In any case, I enjoyed them.  A very hearty biscuit to say the least, and one with - and requiring - quite a bite.

In general any cookie with chocolate will make me happy - and usually does.  But then there's also Oatmeal, Oatmeal Raisin, Butter Cookies, Shortbread, Snickerdoodles, Ginger Snaps, Lemon Meltaways (all that powdered sugar!), etc., etc., etc...

As for store bought brands/kinds: Nutter Butters, Oreos (but I've found I can't eat as many as I used to - they give me a headache after five or six or...), Pecan Sandies (although I can tell the recipe has changed over the past few years - they've gone healthier), Stouffer's Ginger Snaps, Archway Iced Oatmeal (the little crispy ones), and anything those Keebler Elves come up with.

DR Hisaka - That sounds like the weather pattern that can happen here in Virginia - particularly central Virginia.  In fact, the similar climate was the major reason that San-J Corporation opened a plant on the outskirts of Richmond to make their tamari and other condiments.

*Oh, do you pour tamari on top of your vanilla ice cream?  When I played for their "Welcome" reception at the Governor's Mansion many years ago, that's what they served for dessert - vanilla ice cream topped with a splash of tamari.  They claimed that it was a Japanese use of their product.

**And it was surprisingly good too.

Title: Re:DIRE IRE

And here's a recipe from http://www.aussieslang.com

Quote

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats (regular oatmeal) uncooked
1 cup desiccated coconut
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 tbsp golden syrup (or honey)
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tbsp boiling water
Method

Combine the flour (sifted), oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl.
Melt the butter and Golden Syrup (or honey) in a saucepan over a low heat..

Mix the bicarbonate of soda with the water and add to the butter and Golden Syrup.

Pour the liquids into the dry ingredients and mix well.

Spoon dollops of mixture, about the size of a walnut shell, onto a greased tin leaving as much space again between dollops to allow for spreading.

Bake in a moderate oven, 180C / 350F, for 15-20 minutes.

Cool on a wire rack and seal in airtight containers.

Tips

The American tablespoon is a little smaller than the British tablespoon, so be generous with your Golden Syrup (or Honey) and Water.

If you have any thoughts of keeping the biscuits for any length of time I suggest you keep them in a padlocked container!

For a little variety you may wish to add 2 teaspoons of ginger spice or even Wattle Seeds, a recent addition but don't ask me where to get them.

Mmmm, ANZAC Biscuits.

Enjoy!
[/size]

Oreos

Oreo is very popular in Japan, too, DR DAN(the man).

My favorite cookies as a child, Animal and Alphabet cookies (biscuits) with chocolate and/or many bright color sugar paste.
And now I like YOKUMOKU cookies (sorry, but only dear BK has tasted them…) They are very light and not too sweet as dear BK mentioned. I think they were not satisfactory to HIM. Too small and too light. ;)

MALAPERT, baby, MALAPERT.

I also love Nutter Butters.  I used to enjoy Mother's cookies (the animal ones), and chocolate covered graham crackers, but I've never been that huge a cookie fan.  I will stop occasionally if I see a Mrs. Fields and get their coconut macadamia nut cookie.

I've never tasted vanilla ice cream topped with soy sauce in my life, DR JOSE.  It was in fashion a few years ago in Japan, too, but now....I rarely hear about it.  In any case, I'm really surprised that you mentioned " it was surprisingly good too".  Your taste is  beyond international !

I forgot about the Frosted Circus Animal cookies...those are my favorite store bought cookies.

I can remember having some wonderful tasting cookies, and other snacks, when I was in Japan...I don't recall the names, but I think I saved some of the packages...I know the name of one items was MIKE.

What I liked about the snacks in Japan was that they weren't as sweet as those on America...American snacks seem to be just a bit too sweet, I think...at least for me.

Hey, JMK, if, when I get to the theater on Friday night, it is all sold out....will you take pity on me and still let me in! I will still pay for a ticket and will happily sit or stand anywhere!

Dear BK I am so confused. You have a bush on your roof?

We'll get you in, MB, though we have just had a big run of selling tickets.  Yay!!!

BK, I did what you asked, but that ending on the Jackie DeShannon tunes is just not working for me, but we will leave it for now.  It's just that that whole chorus builds to the cadence back in F and the first 4 bars need the second 4 to complete the phrase and it sounds kind of --------

-----unfinished.

The good news is that the new ending on the Love Medley is working well.

Called the floor refinishing guy, who's coming tomorrow.  Hopefully this can be fixed fairly easily as it is the biggest ugliest dark mar right where you have to walk from the living room back the hall and it's driving me completely BONKERS (a short, scenic drive, I might add).

Well, call me and let's fix it if it isn't working - or play it for me over the phone so I can hear it - I don't really care what it is as long as it goes back somehow and ends big.

Sturm und drang at I'LL BE BACK BEFORE MIDNIGHT - turns out our set is impossible to light and paint.  Who would have thunk such a thing?  And so the people I asked in MARCH to help me but they couldnt' commit to the project are now telling me it has to be redone.  Cousin Brad the set builder is NOT happy - and I am not so excited myself.

So there will be drama AGAIN today - offstage.  Oh well.

And even though we are firing a 12 gauge shotgun filled with blanks TWICE during the show, have a strobe light, three people end up dead including one with a hatchet in his back, a dug-up dead body hanging in the doorway. AND incest - I am sure we will get a letter from someone complaining because someone lit a cigarette onstage.

So, Jose (or anyone), what's "desiccated coconut"??  Sounds disgusting! ;)

It's a fancy term for shredded and flaked and dried coconut.  Health food stores carry it.  The sweetened shredded coconut available in most grocery stores is not the same.  Dessicated coconut is not sweetened.  However, I have come across recipes for ANZAC Biscuits that call for shredded coconut.  I guess it depends upon how sweet you want your biscuits.

Got the second version of the GH master, but, after listening to both, I'm favoring version one, which has more bass.  I found when the bass got pulled back it hurt the tone of Mr. Haines' voice.  So, we're just trying to figure out if one track needs to come down a couple of db or whether it's fine as is - if it's the latter, then I'll be driving the masters to the pressing plant today.  If it's the former, the mastering engineer will overnight me a final copy with that one track's level down.

Cookies are called biscuits in OZ.
Favourite - chocolate coated Teddy Bear Biscuits. (DR Jose may have tried those).

Home made biscuits:  and Gingernuts (Made with Golden Syrup and Powdered ginger).  Would the recipes translate?

I have the Golden Syrup, just need the recipe. :D  They sound yummy.

What about the rest of us?  Should we ALL check our e-mails?

Picked up lots of packages, including Tabitha, which has my actual name on the back cover.  Amazing.

"Do You Just Keep Pouring It On Until the Soy Sauce Covers the Stain?"  That's the title of my next novel.
There's this new regulation pushed by our Nazi government, 2257, that is an insult to free speech and personal liberty.  It's aimed primarily at the Adult Entertainment Industry, and seems to have been bulldozed into being.

From Bruce yesterday:

Quote
Speaking of nutmeats, they were handing out the peanuts on the plane when suddenly the stewardess took all of the packets back from those she'd passed them out to.  Why?  Because, there was someone on the plane who was allergic to peanuts.  Of course, I wondered why that person just didn't EAT the peanuts if they were allergic - why couldn't WE eat the peanuts?  It turned out that the very attractive young lady  next to me works in a hospital, and she told me that even the smell or dust particles from peanuts could put that person into an attack and that they could possibly even die from it.  Who knew?

I would have thought who didn’t know.  ;D Schools are separating the peanut eaters from the non peanut eaters or completely denying any form of peanuts at school.  My kids practically lived on peanut butter sandwiches.

Thanks for the coconut info!!  Now, what's Golden Syrup?

(and please don't say that it has anything to do with the topic that isn't being discussed! :o ;) )

Why have all these dastardly things come to light in the last two decades?  How ever did we all survive, I wonder?  I never heard the initials ADD until the nineties - I think that's a disease brought on by MTV, computers, and the media.  Peanut allergies that can kill?  How many people have died from peanut allergies, and if they are so lethal and so prevalent, then why did we not know about them before, why have airlines been making with the peanuts forever, why, why, why?  How ever did all us people survive a world in which there wasn't a toilet lock?   I am quite allergic to pollen - have flowers been banned?  Is that next?

I would have thought who didn’t know.  Of course, that's because no one probably knew about it....still, I've never heard of anyone actually dying from peanut dust.

I have become very ill simply from breathing foods & chemicals I’m allergic to.  For a short time a boy who was allergic to peanuts joined my hiking group.  I had to stop taking peanut butter dog treats for Echo on the chance the boy would touch her and make contact with the peanut oil since he might stop breathing.  Very scary.

I'm not denying the existence of such allergies, nor the importance of public awareness.  But, we live in a time of fear - everything is a "deal."  And the media feeds the "deal."  I've flown regularly for over three decades, and yesterday was the first time I've ever heard this peanut thing.

The best American baritone ever!  Yep, it's John.  He was a dear man and a great talent who died far too young.  I wsh SONY would release his recording of THE MERRY WIDOW with Lisa Della Casa on CD; it's a good translation, and the cast is wonderful.  John's recording of DO RE MI leaves the overrated Stokes Mitchell in the dust.

The news from my dentist was grim.  I have been experiencing, since Sunday, an increasing sensitivity in one of my crowned teeth.

Today, my dentist x-rayed, and told me the tooth under the crown has split.  The entire bite of my mouth is out of whack and the pain is excruciating if I forget and bite down.

I'm on amoxicillin and vicodin until my appointment with an endodontist at 4 p.m.

I HATE pain...give me NO pain, that's all I ask.

Ah... Pepperidge Farms!

Chesapeakes are good, but I've always been a Sausalito fan.

However, notice how the prices for the package of those cookies has sort of stayed the same, but the cookies have gotten smaller. A lot smaller.  I used to be able to only eat one or two at a time.  Nowadays, I can eat a whole package and still not be sated!

;)

*Oh, and my favorite Pepperidge Farm cookies are their Melbournes - which can only be found in one of their assortments (at least in my neck of the woods).  It's an almond shortbread.  Sooo good.  They remind me of the Greek finikia... or is that the koularakia.... in any case... They're almond cookies dusted with powdered sugar.

YUM!

Oh, now I remember that play!  It was done here locally a few years ago.  I didn't recognize the name, but when you mentioned the dug-up body hanging in the doorway THEN I remembered it.

Good Evening!

Greetings from Richmond!

The drive down was relatively uneventful.  I did end up driving behind a truck hauling garbage, some very odoriferous garbage!, for a few miles, but we evetually got out of each other way so to speak.  I started feeling a little headachey about halfway through my drive, and then I realized I hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast this morning.  I guess I got carried away with my cleaning.  So, as soon as I hit Richmond, I stopped into Ukrop's and picked up a Chicken Tenders Meal for my late-late-lunch/dinner.  And I got some corn pudding and collard greens for my sides!  Yummy!

-Oh, and a slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting for dessert.

So, now I'm back at Steve's, I've had my dinner, and just watching some TV.

Nothing like a Zoo Cracker dipped in Haagen-Dazz vanilla ice cream.  If I don't stop soon I won't be able to sleep.

-Boy does Prime Time TV really suck!  :-\

So, spending the evening packing for Chicago and playing with my iTunes and my iPod, I didn't miss anything, huh?

Must be off to sleep, because I have an early rendezvous with my traveling partner tomorrow, then the drive to The Windy City.  Don't know how much I'll be able to be online, but will check in when I can.

Vibes, in my "library voice" for DR ozderek.

Jose only you would know of two bakeries with almond macaroons.  I have been looking for years for some.

http://www.jeanjacquesbakery.com

My guess, the German bakery will be better, however I don’t mind comparing them. :)

Well... I'll see what I can arrange...

And I know quite a few other bakeries that sell almond macaroons.  One place I know sells them Plain and Chocolate Dipped!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to check out any bakeries in the Pacific Northwest.  Someday...

Off to the West Coast tomorrow. My youngest cousin is getting married out near San Jose. Gosh, I remember chaperoning his 6th grade field trip up to Mendocino when I lived out there. He asked some little girl out and it was the sensation of the campground. Now, he's getting married. Not to the same girl, of course.

I have something like 50 first cousins, and he is the last of that generation. It will be good to see Aunts and Uncles and folks I don't get to see too often. A nice vacation too.

I'm a Jack Jones fan. I would say there is a hint of Jack Jones in the stylings of Mr. Haines.

DR Rodzinski - Have a great time out near San Jose!  Will you also be taking some vacation time out there? Will Antonia be going with you?  Or will you leave her crying in your apartment until your return again?

;)

Safe travels to you too, Ginny!

Should be able to, Tomov. If not on the Gal's mom's ancient Mac, then on my sister's computer. I'll make it happen. Plan to meet up with RLP at some point as well.

Gal-tonia will be along this time. I'll be out there until July 4, so I have a week of vacation really, after the wedding.

I need it too. I really really was hoping to be returning to a new job, but it did not pan out, so I gotta return, regroup and start the hunt anew.

No, Guy Haines has a creamier sound than Tony Perkins ever thought about having. A less foggy Mel Torme.

So sorry to read about your tooth pain, DR Ron. Pain associated with the teeth is among the WORST there is. Hopefully your dentist gave you some pain killer to numb it a little.

Really, my heart bleeds for you and anyone with similar toothaches.

I knew I wouldn't have time to finish ADVISE AND CONSENT when I saw the chores awaiting me when I got home and also the fact that the phone has rung all night long.

All I managed to do was squeeze in (among the phone calls) an ANGEL episode on DVD. I have two more to go and I will be finished with Season 2.

And now, since I only got 6 hours of sleep last night, I'm going to call it a day and head for bed.

Good night, all.

Creamy Guy Haines.

Just spent an hour on the phone with my web designer, going over every inch of the site on our final test.  Everything works splendidly.  We are adding just a handful of items (we finally decided on shipping and handling costs, plus now there will be release dates listed, and also a "mail order" option for those who don't do credit cards).  I'm sure we'll be making adjustment over the next few days as people check out the site and have comments, but I think it will be ready to go "live" tomorrow morning.  However, we are not officially announcing the "liveness" until Monday (partly because of the way AOL caches pages - it could take that long for the site to show up), so you dear readers will have first crack at checking everything out and preordering (preorders are key to the success of Kritzerland, so I'm hoping that everyone who can do so, will).  More about all this in tomorrow's notes.

Have a great trip DR Rodzinski!

I also have a wedding this weekend...my brother Allen's oldest son Brian is getting married in Milwaukie (which is near Portland, so I don't have to travel very far).

Well I was supposed to be in Montreal, Quebec, Canada right at this moment, BUT I never got off the ground. I left work at 5pm and drove to Miami Internation Airport. It took me a hour. They moved the check in from terminal C to A, but the gate was still at C. So stupid. So I had a 90 minute wait to boarding. And I waited And I waited. They closed the airport because of the lightning storm. It not only prevented planes from yaking off but landing as well. So here I am back in Boca Raton and not able to see my family which is why I was going there for 2 1/2 days.

John Reardon did indeed record for Ben Bagley. I think he was a favorite of his on his latter day (not the Mormon recordings) LPs and later cds.

Here are some of the songs he sang

Room Is Filled With You,
Wine And Peaches
Lonely Me
President Jefferson March
Locker Room
I Remember It Well

John Reardon was the Opera Master on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Sadly he died in 1988 from AIDS complications (which I did not know)

I'm feeling peculiar - don't know if this is a result of one of the JMK kids being ill, but I suspect it is, as I don't get sick unless I catch it from someone else.  I'm hoping it will go away quickly - drinking lots of that  stuff I loathe - that EmergenC, and am sucking on Cold-eez.  We shall see how I feel on the 'morrow.

I also watched the tail end of a movie last night. The TV Guide channel said it was Woody Allen Sweet and Lowdown. But it was from the UK. Not sure if it was Ireland, Wales or Scottland. But this was first English language film I ever watch that had English Subtitles!

Well, I must go to bed and sleep the night away.  Tomorrow, Friday June 24th, is the American Cancer Society's 2005 Thurston County (http://olywa.net/tcrelay/) Relay For Life Event, and I'm participating in it!  I'm on a team at my work.  Once I wake up Friday morning, I'll probably be awake until Saturday evening...with very, very, very (that's three verys) little sleep time, if any.  And once I leave work (sometime in the early afternoon) and go to the event, I won't have access to my computer.  And once I get home Saturday evening, I'm going to literally crash and sleep until Sunday afternoon!  So, I have a vvveeerrryyy llloooonnnnngggg weekend ahead of me, with a lot of walking.  I hope I survive. ;D

I thinks you're sick becaus you didn't get enough peanuts on the plane.  You know, every year for the last eleven years The Lovely Wife and I sit in biz class enroute to blighty and we're usually served nice heaping dishes of either macadamia nuts or cashews. Never once have ever heard anyone complain or have the nuts been rescinded once past out.

New notes up in twenty count them twenty minutes.  I am going to take a hot shower right now - maybe that will wash away some of the yuckiness.
