I saw two squirrels mating on the side of a tree today. (No photo evidence, sorry.) As many squirrels as there are in my yard, I'm surprised I haven't seen this until now, and even more surprised that they could do that while hanging onto a tree!

I don't know why I felt compelled to share that...

On the First Run website, " The Internationale" is the #1 DVD! And yesterday we were at 55,000 on Amazon and today we're at 11,000 - I don't know what changed, but there are only 5 copies left at Amazon - so clearly something is causing a buying frenzy again. Must be all the Hainsies. Thank you!!!

I don't guess one of them is RIO RITA (1930), is it? I am really desperate to see this early musical. I don't know why I have DIXIANA on DVD and have never even seen the first version of RIO RITA even on TV. I agree completely. In fact, I was desvastated that Alexis Smith (who was certainly flashy) won the Tony over Dorothy who absolutely broke my heart with her performance. And as much as I admire and think the world of Barbara Cook, she didn't come close to Dorothy's "Losing My Mind." And the less said of Judith Ivey, the better.

Wouldn't you know it? When I went out on my errands, the sky opened up and it POURED down rain. It was at its worst when I was trying to get the groceries out of the store and into my car.

Now, it looks and feels like an early summer day outside. Amazing!

I watched a couple of CSI episodes to begin my afternoon. I started with a fantasy dream vacation for a guy from LA that turned fatal for him through an innocent misunderstanding. A good episode, and I loved seeing Julie Benz (DEXTER) and Kenneth Johnson (THE SHIELD) in guest star roles. Judd Nelson was the principal guest star.

The other episode, called "Rashomama" had four different viewpoints of a murder at a wedding. Veronica Cartwright played the victim, the mother of the groom. The case was complicated by Nick's truck, which contained all the gathered evidence, being stolen while they had breakfast at a diner. Thus, they had to build their case from the few remaining clues not compromised by the theft.

Offbeat episode and a good one.

I ended the afternoon with TEXAS RANGERS. A friend gave me this movie for Christmas several years ago saying that he knew I'd enjoy it. I rather doubted it and put off watching it until today. Surprise! It was entertaining. I thought it was going to be MTV Goes West, but it was actually a pretty good history of the reformation of the Texas Rangers ten years after the end of the Civil War. Good actors in the cast: James Van Der Beek, Dylan McDermott, Robert Patrick, Tom Skerritt, Alfred Molina. Ashton Kutcher was his usual ridiculous self (almost ruined the movie for me). Singer Randy Travis gave a very good performance in this; he should be doing more films.

Well directed, a pleasing script with some reasonable surprises, and a nice transfer (if a tad dark) with excellent Dolby Digital sound. Best of all, it ran about 100 minutes, perfect for this kind of story.

The thing about Barbara Cook's interpretation of "In Buddy's Eyes" is that she's singing the song as it's written and Sondheim himself has said that the song is about Sally trying to stick it to Ben...the subtext is that she's trying to make Ben jealous of what he could have had. Barbara just sings the song as a lovely love song about her husband, which is (from what I've read) totally wrong for that moment in the show.
