The woman at the desk was very apologetic and helped us find a new hotel only three blocks away ( the short way)

And had given the room to someone else

Apparently the credit card holding their reservation had expired at the end of last month and although a new one had been issued with the same exact number and the new expiration date some years hence, the credit card company had denied the charges, so the hotel had cancelled the reservation 

This morning

To discover their reservation had been cancelled

Parked the car across the street and went to check them in

We finally arrived at the hotel they had booked in midtown

Then I drove them to their hotel in Manhattan, driving as far west as possible on the Ocean Causeway

But they were happy
