I never read any magazines on a regular basis.  I remember reading MAD a little when I was in middle school, but that was about it...other than TV Guide (before it became the magazine that it is today :P).

I read

MAD
Starloge
Cinefantisque (When I first stated to read it they had "lengthy, information-filled "retrospective" articles devoted to the full production details of such classic films as The Incredible Shrinking Man and Planet of the Apes. Based on the popularity of these articles, Cinefantastique began producing huge double-issues centering on comprehensive Making-Of looks at such movies as Star Wars (the magazine's first double-issue), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner and The Thing."

Recently I would read Video Watchdog but Borders or Barbes and Nobel no longer carry it down here and not sure if it still publishes

I currently read Instinct

DR CILLA LIZ - that's great news....I am only in the second week of my diet and the end of the first week of my exercise program, so I haven't seen much change....although the clothes do fit better.  I am hoping to have a give away party as well.

Also if you have a friend in a theatre company, you might ask if they would like the clothes for their costume collection.  If they do contemporary plays, they always need different stuff.

TOD:

MAD MAGAZINE of course.....only 25 cents....I loved everything except SPY vs SPY which I thought was dumb.  The parodies and the Don Martin cartoons - the parody ads.....the television parodies.

I also bought FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND and CREEPY and EERIE.  I liked CREEPY better, I don't remember why.

I also liked Tales of the Unexpected the Comic Book....but that might not be the title...the stories usually had a little Twilight Zone/O. Henry twist ending.

And the word of the day is: ANTONOMASIA!
Antonio Masia used to drive everyone crazy by refusing to use people's names, and using pronouns instead.  "Did you hear what she said about her?  She said she was a two-bit floozy, and then she said she was a frigid emasculator, and then she said she didn't think she could even spell that, and that's when she slapped her, so she slapped her back, and when she tried to stop the fight they both slapped her, and when they finally broke them up they all looked like something their cat had drug in."

(I used to know someone who did this.  The above monologue is almost exactly the sort of thing she Carla would say.  I swear, listening to her Carla talk drove me nuts.)

Wrong.  Authur Laurents would insist it all be said in Spanish, with supertitles, for authenticity.

¿Cuántas fechas dejaron, Chino? ¿Cuántos, y todavía ha dejado uno para mí?

And don't forget to pronounce the "j" as an "h".  We must be authentico, si?

That is the name of my new mystery thriller - a stage adaptation of the novel The Heat Goes Off At Dawn, which was filmed as The Heat Goes Off At Noon.

Oddly, I have that sort of interaction with two people on All that Chat - that I find myself arguing with their posts, but when I see them in person, I find them to be the most delightful people.

Maybe that's a question for an Ask BK Day - Are there people that you get into arguments with online but think are great when you meet them?  Or vice-a versa also, perhaps.

Good morning, all! As soon as the Staples around the corner opens, I have to photocopy this score that consumed my yesterday and deliver it. After that, hopefully, I can get back to the Napa Valley and Mr Esposito's wedding. I have a telephone conversation later today with a Houston conductor about a concert Ron Raines is doing in April.

DR Nursie, to answer your inquiry about MONK: I liked the show quite a lot in its frst two seasons and I occasionally enjoy an episode, but I find that when the writers screw up - and they seem to do it a lot because they're running out of ticks for him - they lose the sense of the character (how could the fool I saw last night ever pass the exam to be a cop?) and I thought if I heard Mr Shalhoub be cruel to Natalie or whine one more time about his leg I would throw things at the tv. As to characterizaton on the show, why the passive Ntalie would take such crap from him is still beyond me. There have been at least two episodes now where he is a complete horror to her andtakes it because at around one minute before the episode ends he apologizes. She should drown him in a tub and ask her agent to find her a new sitcom. Last week's episode was a lot of fun; I hated last night's.

Yes and it seems to be the case....although to her it is "all my fault" and I "don't deserve to be her friend" - this is cause for celebration.

I think there may have been a thermostat mystery already....if not, you can have the plot device.

Thumbs down from my niece on the new Howie Mandel show.

My brother-in-law was watching. The threw a bucket of wine on some lady.  My niece ran out of the room screaming, "this show is not for me!".

I have never seen her run screaming from tv. But she was scared by the show and kept asking me why they were throwing wine on the lady!

Was it red wine or white?

If it was red wine, it could have been a lead-in for an OxyClean ad.

TOmorrow I'll be working on a Comedy CEntral stand-up special which shouldn't take all afternoon and evening. I've never heard of the comedian, so it should be interesting and at least something new.

Then, on Sunday, I'll begin the final season of CHEERS in its upcoming boxset release.

Betsy's brother's wife was Production Manager on Cheers for most of its run.   All of the support staff play bar customers in the two-part finale (when Shelley Long returned).  You can see Betsy's brother and his wife in the booth stage right (screen left of the bar) throughout that episode.  :)

Well, folks, it's PRODUCERS audition day.  We have Bialy pre-cast (shhhh....don't tell anyone), but here's to finding a decent Bloom.  I think we may need to go with a less than statuesque Ulla, but the woman I have in mind is gorgeous and can belt, so we'll simply put her in the highest heels she can walk in.  ;)

Catching up with yesterday's posts.  Lawdy, this group can be a bunch of Chatty Cathys.

Yesterday, der B was not entirely truthful about how his wife never knew he was gay.  OK, what he said was that he never told her, but...

Since his wife and I met, at a Christmas dinner at their daughter's, then yes, she knew.  I mean, c'mon, what other reason was there for my being at that table?  Nobody is that dense.  (She and I were cordial and polite the entire evening, if you're wondering.)

However, since I don't believe der B and his spouse ever discussed his sexual inclinations, he wasn't being dishonest, either.

...ADDITION

Never mind, I just read his further post where he told the same story.

However dot dot dot...

People figure us out as a couple a lot faster than the hour he figured it they would take to figure.  Like, minutes, say!

We are cute together.   ;D

I'm back from all my errands so I'm very happy for the nonce.

Today's taxi driver from Tunisia was a cheery and pleasant fellow to and from my drop-off place and I ran into my Cincinnati librarian friend Peggy and her husband Peter on their way to buy a tv at the closeout selling Circuit City. Peggy moved to New York in 1978 with her young man at the time, the late Eugene Sher, who was the primary mover in getting me to New York in June 1979.  That's another story involving a U-Haul truck containing all of their property burning to a crisp on State Route 80, somewhere between Cincinnati and Manhattan around 4 am, an aborted theatrical showcase and the Drama Book Shop.

By 1983, Peggy was engaged to Peter, author of the New York history UPPER WEST SIDE STORY, and by 1986 or so, Eugene had moved to Los Angeles, where he died from a heart attack around 1999, too young and too unappreciated as an actor and mensch.

Favorite magazines?

I certainly remember getting the first issue of MAD.  I even recall there was a hilarious spoof in there of the Gary Cooper/Burt Lancaster movie, VERA CRUZ, which was a big hit back then.

But, before that, I was really into all of the EC comic books, from MAD to TALES FROM THE CRYPT to FRONTLINE COMBAT to CRIME SUSPENSTORIES and the Sci-Fi mags, which occasionally ran a Ray Bradbury story.

I bought them all.

TOD:

My very first magazine was HIGHLIGHTS,  but I only liked that one for the hidden picture puzzle--otherwise, I considered it "baby-ish".
I quickly moved on to the vastly more sophisticted JACK AND JILL, with its interesting stories (I loved the Baba Yaga tales), fun craft ideas and games and puzzles.  I still have some of those stashed away.
Of course, there was FAMOUS MONSTERS which I devoured cover to cover.   My devotion to this magazine and its subject matter led to my incessant viewing of horror movies, consequently leading to an interest in classic  movies in general which, through movie musicals, opened my eyes to musical theatre and the stage.
MAD was another must-read for me, my favorite features being the TV and movie and song parodies.  But I absolutely laughed my young butt off reading Al Jaffe's Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions.
Also, while they were not my magazines, our household was always stocked with the latest issues of LIFE, WOMAN'S DAY, FAMILY CIRCLE, READERS DIGEST, 16, TIGER BEAT, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and TV GUIDE.
Comics, along with CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA, are a different subject all together. (Not to mention PLAYBOY, PENTHOUSE and, eventually, PLAYGIRL.)

The earliest magazines I can remember looking forward to reading were MAD and WALT DISNEY MAGAZINE (produced during the run of THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB). I was also a BIG fan of the DC/Superman universe, so I had to have ACTION, ADVENTURE, SUPERMAN, SUPERBOY, JIMMY OLSEN, and LOIS LANE whenever they appeared.

The biggest discovery for me as a kid was that I could SUBSCRIBE to my favorite magazines and not have to try to find them every month at the dime store. As I've always been someone who looked forward to mail delivery (like Christmas every day!), it was thrilling getting my magazines delivered to my home often days before they appeared on newstands.

I'm waiting for the guy to show up to take me to go pick out some hardware for the house.

I am so thrilled and scared that I really don't know what to say.

I will have new windows, tiled floors, a new utility room added, heat and air, rewired, privacy fence on the west side of the house (don't need it on the other sides because it's already there), fans with lights, a new kitchen sink, water heater, etc, etc.

Hello all.  Sorry I haven't been in touch but it has been a very busy time.

Congratulations!!!!

TOD - earliest memory is of something called Humpty Dumpty, then Highlights and Jack & Jill.  I, too, loved comic books like Archie and Katey Keene.

For economics class in high school, I was required to subscribe to Newsweek and still read it, 40+ years later.  Richard also subscribes to The Week, which I like a lot and now have more time to read.  My personal subscriptions now are Good Housekeeping, Country Living, MORE, Real Simple, and Midwest Living.  Through Facebook, I met a 7th grade language arts teacher in central Ohio whose students make collages and I send her all those mags when I'm finished with them.  In return, she sends me a Vera Bradley trinket.

JELL-O - During his final three months of in and out of hospitals and nursing home stays, Stan took great delight in telling the story of my surviving for seven very long days in the hospital eating nothing but celery JELL-O.

Lye Soap - Up until September, Stan always made lye soap from his grandmother's old recipe.  I still have a bag of the soap that is great to use on whites and sheets in the laundry.

I had a subscription early on to HIGHLIGHTS magazine. If I am not mistaken my Grandma Cooper got it for me.

I graduated to FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND (I have all of my old issues packed away). I can remember getting each issue and sitting on the front stoop looking at it with the neighbor girls from next door, Tracy and Krissa.

At about this same time I regularly purchese Marvel's THE INHUMANS comic book and on occasion would also pick up other Marvel comics like THE SILVER  SURFER, THE AVENGERS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR and GODZILLA.

My current subscriptions are FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE, CLASSIC IMAGES, FILMFARE, VIDEO WATCHDOG, and FILMFAX.

I liked Eerie better, but I think it was because it was the first one I started reading.

Currently my must-haves are Oxford American, Paste, Believer, and Filmfax

That looks like a good book...I'm going to check it out!

My first ones were JACK AND JILL and GOLDEN MAGAZINE. I had poems published in each. That was the extent of my career as a poet.

Jack & Jill
Golden Magazine

I had subscritptions to both from the age of 5 to 9.  Then I was given a subscription to a National Geographic Magazine written for kids, but I don't remember the name of it   It was very interesting though and I had it until I was about 14

My teen years I read 16 and TigerBeat -- OH Bobby Sherman!!!

I ocassionally read MAD at friend's houses but my parents thought it was inappropriate and wouldn't let it in the house

My parents always had LIFE and LOOK and my Mom had Redbook.  My grandmother took McCall's and I loved reading the  Betsy McCall stories in the back and she would always let me cut out the Betsy paperdolls.

For many years I took Smithsonian and Natural History but I let them lapse a few years ago.

Now we get Asimov's, Analog, National Geographic, and Reader's Digest.

Danise, great to see you. We've missed you! Congratulations on all your house stuff. I feel kind of stuck because my DH knows how to do pretty much everything that needs to be done around here, but is too busy to do any of it, and doesn't want me to hire anyone. But if I did hire someone, they would be fixing the dishwasher, installing the washer/dryer we've never used, and replace the toilet (that that previous owner painted purple!) and sink with new ones we've had for several years. Then,  hanging a lamp and a few pictures would take care of the living space. Then there's the apartment downstairs, which is still a burned out shell.

I wish my brother would move back home for a few years. We could keep him busy!

T.O.D.

I read MAD, CRACKED (was that the name?), and lots of comics (mostly Archie); but none of them on a regular basis.  The only magazine that I would read, cover to cover every week, was TV GUIDE.  My mom would buy it at the store on Tuesday afternoon for the next week that started on Saturday.  I read every article and feature in the magazine.

Later, I moved on to AFTER DARK and PLAYBOY, but TV GUIDE remained an addiction until the late 90's.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I did not - well, my parents did not have a subscription to "Highlights", but my grade school did, as well as my dentist's office.  -Dr. Morabito!

My Mom had subscriptions to "Family Circle" and "Better Homes and Gardens", and I'm guessing that's where my love of food and cooking came from.  Both magazines had "cooking with children" features, but I usually gravitated toward the regular, "adult" recipes.  It's amazing how much both of those magazines have changed over the years. "BH&G" seems really dumbed-down now.

I did like "Mad" - mainly for the folding cover - but even at the age of nine or ten, I knew that most of the humor was beyond my age and frame of reference at the time. But I do remember buying any of the "Star Wars" related issues.  Oh, and there was also "Bananas" magazine.

Right after college, I went through a MAJOR magazine phase due to all of those "2-years for $10" offers that were out there.  "Men's Health", "GQ", "Gourmet", "Bon Appetit", "Cook's Illustrated", "Keyboard", "Electronic Musician", "Opera World", "The Advocate", "Out" and a couple of others.  I remember doing a major cleaning, and after bundling up hundreds of back issues - and realizing that I had hardly read any of them - I finally stopped renewing my subscriptions.  All that paper!  All those trees!

Currently, I don't subscribe to anything, but will pick up copies of "Time Out New York" and "New York Magazine" regularly.

If I had to chose based on my life experiences, I'd go for Mike Nesmith, who had much more talent. But in my youth I always went for the guys who could make me laugh. (I guess I still do, because my DH can always make me laugh!)

I saw a play once that was based on the idea that you could tell which friends you would be compatible with based on their favorite Monkee. Can't remember the name of the play, but it was fun.
Title: Re: THE EARLY SHOW
Post by: Jane on January 17, 2009, 10:26:42 AM

Exactly why we stopped watching MONK after the 2nd season, or maybe it was midway through the 3rd.

My parents also subscribed to "Reader's Digest" for a number of years, and we still have a couple of the "Condensed Books" books somewhere in storage.  *Which came in really handy for grade school book reports.  ;)

My parents also subscribed to "Reader's Digest" for a number of years, and we still have a couple of the "Condensed Books" books somewhere in storage.

It's hard to type on a laptop while juggling two cats trying to usurp my body heat.
I am now trying to imagine you repeatedly tossing two cats into the air.  Are you sure that "juggling" was the word you were looking for?

And when are you going to add a third?  Juggling two is far too easy!

I have just seen my husband off on a four day business trip to Phoenix.

Love you, dear!

Oh, by the way: I started a repair project that isn't finished.  The water is turned off in the kitchen.  Don't use the kitchen sink, the dishwasher, or the ice maker.

Did you line up at Circuit City (http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/CIRCUITGATER17_20090117-133203/181070/) this morning?

-Sounds like it is best to wait another week or two or three for the real deals.  On the local news last night, there were interviews with some shoppers who had rushed to Circuit City just after the liquidation announcement was made hoping that the deals and steals were already kicking in.  "Come back tomorrow".  -And there was one guy who bought a couple of things yesterday, but was planning on taking them back for a "price adjustment" once the liquidation started.  Alas, I don't believe under the rules of the liquidation that price adjustment "refunds" will be allowed.

For many years I took Smithsonian and Natural History but I let them lapse a few years ago.

Now we get Asimov's, Analog, National Geographic, and Reader's Digest.

I think one year they had a twin boy and girl as younger siblings for Betsy McCall.  I think the boy's name was Kerry and the girl was Merry (it being around Christmas).  It was one of the few times I found someone (even a paper doll) who spelled their name the same as I do.  God, I lead a dull life!

I have my mouth all set for prime rib, but if the end cut is not available maybe I'll go with salmon.

For Holiday dinners I always have the prime rib roast cut in two before roasting - that way there are four end cuts!

der Brucer

And for a large roast - 4 or more ribs - cutting it in two also provides a better distribution of medium-well, medium, and rare cuts.

And since I love the end cut, and also like steak tartare, I'm hard to displease.

Well, I hope I can open some eyes at LCR. Whining about losing the election will do no good. Campaigning to point out Obama's short-comings when he fails to live up to the Gay community's expectations based on campaign promises is folly. Obama is the President - if we are going to make strides in human rights issues, it will be with his leadership; our job must be to see that we can muster the necessary Republican votes (mainly in the Senate) to ensure those bills passage. We must challenge Republican legislators to live up the promises of the party of Lincoln.

I did get a chance to watch last night's PSYCH while I ate lunch. Very funny episode (James Roday had more zingers last night than I remember happening in a long time). Morning auditions went surprisingly well.  Only a couple that made us recoil in horror (after they had left, of course).  The fun part, as it is in any show, is after the audition, when the door is closed, and the producer and director start dishing about the various actors.  ;)  I think we've found our Bloom, though Ulla is yet to be cast.  A couple of people who have given me personal grief walked in and blanched at the sight of me, knowing their prospects were nil, which made me laugh silently to myself.  :)

Funniest audition--guy with a lovely voice comes in and does a gorgeous version of "I Hear Bells" (or whatever that Maltby/Shire tune is).  Director, thinking of him for Roger, asks him to do it again, camped up.  The guy hit it out of the ballpark, with one of the most hilarious "physical" readings of the song imaginable.  I'll probably never be able to play the song again for anyone without laughing.

A word of advice that I give to many young actors - and I'm not the first one to give this advice - is to intern with a casting agency for a couple of months (if you can afford to "work for free" for a while).  -Or find a casting director, director, producer, music director or pianist who can get you in the room for a session or two.

Sitting behind the table is truly one of most eye-opening experiences anyone can have.  You see the Good, the Bad, the Ugly.  But, more importantly, you see the "Not There Yet", the "Not Right", and the "It Could Work".  It helps actors take some of the pressure off of themselves - It really is all about them and not you.

*And, yes, DR JMK - I ove that feeling when you know you have a tidbit or two of information that you can use for "the better".  ;)

Back from my errands and my noon meeting with John Scott, which took much longer than I'd thought it would.  I must now do some writing, but there's no way I'll get more than two or three pages done today, which is slightly annoying - unless I decide not to go to Benjamin Button this evening and see that Tuesday.  We'll see how far I get.  I'm taking pages to muse Margaret tomorrow no matter what.

John had made a sandwich for each of us, but I really didn't want to eat it - had to, to be polite, but he had it cut into four pieces of which I only ate three.  John is a fantastic composer, but not a fantastic cook.  This was some sort of egg salad thing with way too much mayo and pine nuts and some lox added on.  Not for me, but I was a good soldier.

Spencer is about 40 miles or so from where I grew up. I haven't read Dewey yet, but her description of Iowa, is going to be where I'm from.  An interesting side note.  Around Christmas this year a woman was driving in the country near Spencer and saw something on the ground. She stopped and discovered it was a kitten.  She picked it up and took it to the Library....it looks exactly like Dewey only it is a little girl.   I'm not sure, but I think they are keeping her

TOD, I guess I didn't talk about now.  I get a lot of professional discounts so some things like People I get for the waiting room.  I also get Newsweek, Bon Apetit, Vanity Fair, and several legal magazines.   I often try out a magazine for a year and if I don't like it don't renew.

Yes, the Button length is weighing heavy on my mind - and I can see it at the DGA on Tuesday night on their big screen.  Then again, I may need to get out of here this evening.  The problem is, this guy never starts on time, so I probably won't get out of there until close to eleven.  Then again, tomorrow is mine all mine.  We shall see.

I just wrote a little over four pages, so I'm feeling better now.  I'll definitely finish this chapter in the morning, then print out this week's pages and take them to muse Margaret.  I just passed 100 pages.

I have returned from the memorial service and the reception.  The service was lovely.  I was very impressed with the pastor of the church. Perhaps I will consider changing churches.  The only thing keeping me at my old church is history.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and vibes.

I decided not to go back out to the cemetery today.  It is very cold here today.

I'm just going to stay in tonight, instead of working, crawl into a hot shower or tub, then relax on my couch or in my bed.

I will be right over!   :-*

These are issues I never had to personally face and you opened my eyes.

How beautifully phrased, derBrucer.

I am curious, JMK, are they correct in that assumption?

I think that the cajun fried shrimp and ravioli I ate yesterday are the reason that I've felt logy today.  I may have eaten a tad too much, since I was very hungry and the food itself looked great and tasted even better.

That is rather a strange dinner combo!

TOD

Oh man! I remember Betsy McCall. And there were paper dolls.  I loved those

I still have my Betsy McCall doll.

took a nice long nap this afternoon and am now prepared to watch some Bollywood movies....I am almost done with my first one, ANKH MICHOLI (1960) starring Mala Sinha and Shekhar.

It is a enjoyable, thought slightly confusing, mystery thriller.

And I love the poster for the film, which was what made me want to see the movie.

Happy Anniversary to Ginny and Richard~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks, DR Cillaliz!

Richard and I had a delightful dinner at The Meadows.  No prime rib on tonight's menu, so I took DR Elmore's recommendation and had the grilled salmon, along with a house salad, baked potato, Brussels sprouts (yes, I do like them!), and a small caramel sundae for dessert.  The Meadows is one of our favorite restaurants where we've celebrated many anniversaries.  I was most pleased at how busy it was tonight - we saw several friends, including the parents of one of DS Rob's good friends.  One of the things I'm liking about being retired is reconnecting with my friends here in town - not easy to do when you're out of town 55+ hours a week.

Whew!  I have been spending the evening doing laundry and trying on everything in my closet to see what fits and what doesn't.

Der Brucer you are right. I'm getting rid of all the stuff that's too big with only a couple exceptions.  One pair of jeans I bought when I was at my heaviest and a business suit I bought then too so I have something to look back at when I start feeling like I'm not making progress.  The rest is going including some of my favorite jackets.  I thought about eBay, but I don't really have time to mess with it so, I'm going to take it all to Goodwill.  I like that idea a lot better.  I did think about having things altered, but I think I just want a clean break.  I still have plenty to wear for now, so ...   It feels good

The most fun was trying on my former "skinny" clothes and finding that they fit!  I was dancing around in the dress I wore to my nephew's wedding.  It was a kick

I've had a busy evening of viewing.

I began with my work assignment for the day: Russell Peters' RED, WHITE, AND BROWN. It was a very funny 79 minute comedy act recorded last February at Madison Square Garden. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed it. He has a sparkling personality on the stage which engages the audience rather than assaulting them. I really like that kind of comedian.

Then I pulled out another DVD I got for Christmas, the new Legacy Edition of PSYCHO. Having seen it so many times, I watched it this time with the audio commentary turned on. The speaker had written a book on the making of the film, and while his commentary was all right, it just pales in comparison to the kind of intricate research that someone like John Fricke puts into his commentaries for Judy Garland films.

I was a bit disappointed in the transfer, too, as it seemed to still have a fair amount of dirt on it; certainly not the pristine presentation that something like CASABLANCA has received. At least it's now anamorphic. I only had the first DVD release which stupidly was not released with anamorphic enhancement.

In a Hitchcock mood, I ended my evening watching the middle section of NORTH BY NORTHWEST. I began on the train sequence and continued through the cornfield sequence. I've been wearing my baggy clothes but bought one pair of jeans that fit a week or two ago.  After wearing them for a while, it started to bother me that my other clothes were so baggy.  I also have noticed at work that some of my clothes are just too big and I don't think that looks very professional. So, I'm hoping to have a smaller wardrobe that actually fits.

There were some great sales at Younkers today (it's a department store) I actually got 2 pair of pants for $5.02 each! At these clearance prices, I'll buy the size that fits.   Anyway, I haven't bought a lot, but have bought enough that I have clothes to wear to work and if I go out with friends.

What I'm calling my skinny clothes are only a few years old.  I got rid of a lot of them, but kept the things I really liked the best.  If I get too small for these clothes, I'll be in a pickle. I don't have any of my really skinny clothes.  Those would be about 20 years old by now if I did.

CONGRATS!!!! I agree about WW. If you really want to feel it, take the time to go to a store and try on clothes.  If you've lost 30 pounds you should be a size or two smaller. My guess is you'll really start to feel it when you see what you can fit into now.

Sadly, no HGTV here. But flipping through looking, I came across Kim Criswell and Audra McDonald singing "The Wrong Note Rag"with an orchestra and backup singers. The audience applauded nicely, as though they thought it was serious.

Nothing of interest. Well, maybe channel 33, which seems to be a surveillance camera on a lightpole in a park. The picture hasn't changed, even though I have flipped through the channels four times, looking for something interesting to watch.

I did get to see an episode of COPS -- the only real reality show.

Good Evening!

Back from the movie...

"Slumdog Millionaire" still got to me the second time around.  What was really cool was being able to see how the literary and operatic references in the movie actually play out in the movie's plot.  And, yes, I cried again too.  I was also very pleasantly surprised to see that the movie was sold out, and I even saw a few familiar faces in the crowd.  I didn't manage to catch up with an actor I've worked with before, but I did run into the guitarist who played for the production of Violet I music directed a couple of years ago.

*And Steve liked the movie too.  -Whew!

Back from dinner...

We ended up back at Joe's Inn.  Steve had the Broiled Salmon Special, and I had the Spaghetti a la Joe - baked spaghetti topped with provolone and meat sauce.  All very yummy, and quite filling.  -Oh, and we had dessert too: Oreo Mudslide Pie and Chocolate Mousse Pie.  Again, very yummy and very filling.  And in the case of the Oreo Mudslide Pie, very(!) rich too.

Sadly, no HGTV here. But flipping through looking, I came across Kim Criswell and Audra McDonald singing "The Wrong Note Rag"with an orchestra and backup singers. The audience applauded nicely, as though they thought it was serious.

We're supposed to shoot Audra McDonald within the next few weeks, doing a song from Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen's ST. LOUIS WOMAN. Looking forward to that, even though I won't be there when they shoot.

I saw one of your gardening shows when I was at my sister's house, Edi. I saw your name. It was about a man who had a hammock gazebo with rain.

Wow...that is an old one!!

Hate to appear unhip, but I don't know of Rosario Dawson. I do have the Fleet Foxes CD, so maybe I'm not tragically unhip...

Congrats to DRs Cillaliz and Edisaurus on your "lessening".  :)

Thanks, Jose. I still have a long way to go; my family hasn't even noticed! And as far as the baggy clothes, I could go to work in my PJs and no one would know the difference. I'm in a dark room all day by myself. And that's fine by me!

The gal who usually brings sandwiches to these screenings did not do so this evening.  Which means I'd only eaten two-thirds of a sandwich.  So, I ate crap - some popcorn and a few laffy taffys.  The minute the film was over I hurried out and over to Gelson's, where I got a small thing of righteous red potato salad, a small thing of Chinese Chicken Salad, and an even smaller thing of lobster salad, all of which I just ate.

Perhaps I'll read a little of what I wrote today, or maybe I'll just write another page if inspiration should happen to present itself.

Topic of the Day... Addendum...

OH!  -And the still-missed "Show Music" too.

OMG!  I totally forgot that I subscribed to "Show Music" AND "Playbill"!  I have several years' of each AND I just NOW remembered that I'm a charter subscriber to "The Sondheim Review"...and just got the latest issue within the last couple of weeks!

Man, I have a horrible memory...and I'm only 42! :-\

I'm feeling very logy today.  Chills.  Chills.  Chills.  Plus a teeny tiny bit of a tummy bug.  Tiny headache, too.
I'm just going to stay in tonight, instead of working, crawl into a hot shower or tub, then relax on my couch or in my bed.

~~~Vibes for TD!!~~~
Funniest audition--guy with a lovely voice comes in and does a gorgeous version of "I Hear Bells" (or whatever that Maltby/Shire tune is).  Director, thinking of him for Roger, asks him to do it again, camped up.  The guy hit it out of the ballpark, with one of the most hilarious "physical" readings of the song imaginable.  I'll probably never be able to play the song again for anyone without laughing.
I wonder what he did. ;)
I love this song!  I actually transcribed the women's parts from the recording for a couple of friends of mine to sing when we were in a vocal workshop together.  No one knew the song but everyone loved it. :)
bk - Very interesting sandwich components.  Now, if he had put all of that stuff into a Jell-O mold, well..
*And just remember, "Benjamin Button" is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
I actually saw this this afternoon!  And I didn't know how long it was. :P
And while watching it, I never felt like it was too long.  I never once asked myself, "What time is it?"
