Title: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW
Post by: bk on May 20, 2009, 12:12:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes wrote what they knew, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they have no idea what to write because they know NOTHING.

Good morning, all! And, yep, Happy Liza Doolittle Day!

The alarm went off at 4:45 and I got out of bed around 5:20; I need to get more of the Loesser score finished by June 1 so I'm currently juggling it with the final round of revisions for BABES IN TOYLAND, two Moross piano pieces, LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 and the McGlinnventory. Yesterday, I worked at the law office until 2 pm,  went out for a snack with Mark Kaufmann, one of John's oldest friends from Northwestern, came back here, read the mail, answered emails, and finished two more Loesser orchestra parts before passing out. Around 9 am, I'll leave for several hours at Toyland before coming back here to pick up the Loesser work again.

Morning all.

I have a meeting at 11am.

I have finished my oatmeal and coffee.

I will now shower and go to the office.

That is all.

I decided to take care of the BABES rewrites first. Now to Mr Loesser and the Napa Valley. I've got 90 minutes before I go, so maybe I can finish the horns.

Interesting notes - reading a book, much less WRITING a book, has become sort of a thing of the past....although NON FICTION books seem to do very well.  And what with the innerweb, everyone has a forum today.

But as I told my friend Bryan many years after I volunteered to read for his theatre's Play Writing Competition - typewriters should be registered like guns....not EVERYONE should have one.

I had considered calling in and voting for this Adam Lambert guy because I heard on Twitter that there were anti-gay forces out there that were campaigning to prevent his winning.  But then I thought that I never cared about American Idle before so why should I start now?

I will be wokring on the Blu-ray of FARGO today for my work project. I haven't seen the movie in several years, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it. And there aren't a ton of bonus features either, so I should have some time this evening to watch something for fun. I have very little to watch on the network TV side of things tonight. Most of my favorites are either off the air now (LIFE) or have had their season finales already (CSI: NY).

ABC - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST
CBS - comedies (season finales), CRIMINAL MINDS (two hours including season finale)
NBC - LAW & ORDER
FOX - AMERICAN IDOL results/season finale (two hours)
CW  - TAKE THE LEAD
COM - RENO 911!

THE BIG BANG THEORY moves to Mondays at 9:30

THE MENTALIST moves to Thursdays at 10 after CSI.

COLD CASE moves to Sundays at 10.

MEDIUM was indeed picked up by CBS and will be on Fridays at 9.

As for new shows, the new Jenna Elfman comedy goes in at Mondays at 8:30 after HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER which returns to the 8 p.m. slot.

The new NCIS spin-off has been paired with its mothership to make an 8-10 p.m. block of NCIS.

Fans of MOONLIGHT's Alex O'Loughlin can enjoy him in his new show THREE RIVERS on Sundays at 9.

I had a bad allergy attack at four in the morning, so I really needed to sleep, but today was the day some cretins decided to do some work on the house that has sat empty and/or been lived in by suspicious types for the last two years - it's right next door and they were hammering right by my bedroom window.  I'm going to mosey on over there shortly and find out just who they are and what they're doing and how long they're doing it and they better have good answers or I'm calling the cops because everyone in the neighborhood is baffled by the house, its occasional low-life occupants, and the sporadic work.

bk - As long as work can start at 7:00am - which is the usual legal start time in most areas - you may not have any recourse.  I've seen workers in both DC and NYC looking at their watches making sure they don't start their jackhammers until 7:00:01 just to make sure they're not breaking the law.

-However, if you do have some concerns, you can always place a call to the police's non-emergency line at any time.

It's not bad, but Ron and Kim had just done the roles for the first time before the recording was made, and they needed a better director than the guy who directed it in London. I told him Cervantes needs more charm and humor when he's cajoling the prisoners to perform in his charade, that he needed to be Larry Kert and flirt with them all.

Anything is preferable to the back phrasing of the overrated Stokes Mitchell, who can be wonderful when he's given the right role. He is, however, not in the singing class of Richard Kiley, John Reardon, or Alfred Drake and people keep giving him their roles. And he takes them, which is sadder!

Most likely he didn't. When he's here it's usually late Thursday through sometime Sunday. He doesn't have a computer at home so he checks in when he's at work. He's a desk agent at a hotel in Paris and he works weekends. It's an odd schedule as I recall and he sometimes works three weekends then he's off so he may not see his greetings for a while.

Today's notes really reminded me of Monday night's episode of "Two and a Half Men." Alan has decided to write a screen play, and he starts several different versions. Each one starts out autobiographical, but every time he gets writer's block, he writes "and suddenly a giant meteor fell from the sky." (Or something like that.) So, he always starts out writing what he knows, but when he gets stuck, he writes something he knows nothing about. It was very amusing.

I have just cast the role of Harry in Nudie Musical - it's Ted Detweiler, a very nice chap who appears on the TV series Sordid Lives (I think that's what it's called) - he did the Bacharach benefit, and I'm directing a club act for him, and he gave a very good reading a couple of weeks ago.  I think he'll do a very good job.  Now I must cast the Cindy role asap.  I have had two recommendations - we've talked to one of them, a Penny Pingleton from Hairspray - she's going to audition for me on the computer somehow, via Skype or iChat or something like that.  Then elmore recommended someone - and we'll be contacting her.  So, we're down to just needing a Dick Davis and Rosie right now.

American Idol prediction:

Kris Allen will win.

Rationale:

Performances notwithstanding, AI has a large active Christian following which favors the Gospel singer based contestants. In the last trio standing, both Kris and Danny had a strong Gospel following. Ryan announced that there was only 1 million votes (out of 80 cast) separating the top two (Adam and Kris). With Danny out of the running, his still-voting fans must choose between Adam and Kris – I suspect a significant part of that voter base will go to the last Gospeler standing – Kris, and that will provide him a victory margin.

Consequence – little; Adam already clearly has a performance career ahead and winning Idol or not will not substantively affect it.

Then I watched FARGO on Blu-ray. It looks simply marvelous, by far the best it's ever looked on home video (immediately plucked my nonanamorphic DVD off the shelf to give away).

Really enjoyed the film this go-round, too. Being used to the violence level of it, I was prepared and not dreading those scenes so much.

Before coming upstairs, I had time to rewatch all three of Adam's numbers last night and Kris' last number. His voice was literally gone at the end of the song (actually, it was going about halfway through it; he simply couldn't sustain notes at a certain point.) Oh, well. I suspect he won't be singing that song much in the future.

reading a book, much less WRITING a book, has become sort of a thing of the past

That's what I thought too, which makes the popularity of the Kindle so surprising to me.

It seems that books and reading are (still) very popular in the Philippines. -At least that's what it looked like when I was "over there" last week.  The high-end shopping mall we stayed near had three book stores, and they all seemed to be doing good business.  What was really interesting to me was the amount of titles from the U.S. - especially in regards to cookbooks.  In fact, the first cookbook display I came across featured the second cookbook from the folks at Magnolia Bakery!

*It also seemed that most of the hardcover titles were sold or were at least wrapped in that clear library covering - the name escapes me right now.

I think none of us puts forth AI as "great television" anymore than an NBA game, a PGA Golf event, or Iron Chef America are "great television" - they are all televised contests of one sort or other and for some of us, a welcome respite from the intensity of "great television".

I had forgotten my talented friend David Charles Abell is the conductor. You and he have comething else in common besides LAMANCHA, DR JRand58!

A little bit about Ted

Ted was born in Indiana and raised in South Carolina.  He grew up on a surfboard and turned pro and 16.  Shortly after, he injured his ankle and during recover time, he found theatre.  Two years later he found himself at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU where ballet and tap replaced Bali and Australia.  After graduating with the NYU Outstanding Actor Award, he moved to L.A.  Through a mutual friend he ended up on the set of Ned & Stacey where he met Del Shores (who was a producer on the series), and a friendship started.  Soon after, he appeared in a national Levi’s “Nice Pants” ad campaign.  He has starred in numerous musicals and plays.  TV credits include Crossing Jordan, Sliders and Hyperion Bay.  His film credits include: Must Love Dogs, The Ring 2, After Sunset, Chasers and Blood Money.  Ted played “T.J.” in the last L.A. production of Sissies, is thrilled to be back.

Note to DAW re census questionaire:

They send me one of those (aimed at engineers) in 1980.

I ignored the first one.
I sent the follow-up back with black magic-makers slashes across the page.
I took the next follow-up and ripped it into shreds and sent it back.

For the actual census I answered the basic "how many members of your house hold and their age" questions and refused to fill out the rest. I was engaging hostile to the canvaser who tried to do a follow-up (start by refusing to acknowlede the validity of her ID) and she shortly left.

End of census.

I don't know what it means, but the violence in "Fargo" seemed integral to the story.

I agree! I wasn't bothered by the violence in Fargo. However, I thought the violence in The Matrix was terribly gratuitous. But I seem to be the only one who thinks so since everyone else on the planet loved that movie so much.

On a brighter note - our brand new replacement highschool has a full-up theatre - orchestra pit, isolated sound and lighting booths, etc.

And you no doubt protested the tax increase to pay for it every step of the way!      ;)

In fact no. I supported the bond measure, and a second one to build a second playing field and an Olympic pool (which failed). When the School Board discovered that they were going to have money left over (they got a much better deal on the bond rates than they originally projected) I supported a referendum that would have diverted the excess funds to technology upgrades for the schools - it failed and our tax rate was lowered. But never fear, the Federal Government is here! The district got Federal Stimulus funds to do the technology upgrade the local citizenry refused to fund.

I have never felt I was overtaxed, I just feel that often my tax dollars are unwisely spent.

Because AI ran about five minutes longer than the 61 minutes scheduled, Glee started late, and consequently those who had recorded it missed the last five minutes – so Fox screwed their own preview!

Tonight's AI is scheduled to run 7 minutes past the hour, but Ryan warned everybody last night that they would run late to night – I wonder if late will mean past the 2 hour-7 minute mark?

T.O.D.

On April 19 you said in your notes that you had a nice visit with Ted Detweiler and you would be working with him soon.  Were you referring to NUDIE MUSICAL then, or his club act?

At that time I was referring to the act he'll be doing.

Another pointless casting session and waste of an hour - only three people were booked and one of them showed up (all for Dick Davis).  He was an amateur but gave a funny reading - but it's one of those parts that anyone can give a funny reading with - it's all there on the page and with this character there's really no way to muck it up.  So, he's a possibility, IF he understands what commitment is and what kind of experience he'll be having.  Cason's going to talk to him.  So, I'm hoping to talk to all our potential Rosie's by the end of the week.

reading a book, much less WRITING a book, has become sort of a thing of the past

I guess Der Brucer's analysis was spot on. To me it is a complete crock. I really
am shocked that kris could beat adam. It makes me wonder what the voters were
thinking. Kris is nice. And sings well. But adam is a star. And kris winning seems
like a joke to me. It never really occured to me that christians would only vote
for kris. Or that people would boycott adam. I can't imagine voting for someone
only because they were christian.  Or not voting for someone only because they
were gay. The judges basically said that adam was the winner. He is on the covers
of magazines. HE is charismatic and charming. Kris is just sweet and boring. I know
this will not necessarily impact adam's career. But it just makes the whole show
seem like a joke to me. Although the finale was quite excellent, minus the results.

Not too fond of all the moving around. I wonder if CBS ever considered putting MEDIUM after THE MENTALIST. I think these 2 would work well together. I know GHOST WHISPERER and MEDIUM have similar topics. But i don't know if i could watch them both in a row. They are both very heavy shows.

I enjoyed Fargo when I saw it, but I never revisit it BECAUSE of the extreme violence, which I found completely unnecessary and overdone.

But "Fargo" is based on a true story, so the Coen brothers HAD to put all that violence in there! It all really really truly happened just that way. I'm sure it did! I mean why would they make all that stuff up?? So naturally, they had to include all the violence or they would have lost all their screenplay-writing integrity, ya know?

Actually, the featurettes and the commentary reveal that it was NOT a true story. The Coens lied at the beginning of the film just to keep the spirit of the film truly outrageous.

American Idol was a real treat tonight, the results notwithstanding. I can't remember when I've seen such a diverse collection of Pop stars sharing the same stage on TV. The show certainly deserves Emmy consideration - it was better produced than any of the recent Emmy or Tony shows. They must of tied up every rehearsal stage in the LA area last week preparing all those joint Pop Star - Idol candidate numbers. The producers sure went out of their way to showcase their assembled talent.

A set designer, actor and stage manager are in the prop room. The actor accidentally rubs a prop lantern as he passes by it.

A Genie appears and says, "I shall grant you three wishes. One for each of you.

The set designer says, I'd like to go to Ancient Greece to study how theatres were built.
Poof! The Genie sends him off.

The actor says I'd like to go to Elizabethan London and meet Shakespeare.
Poof! The Genie sends him off.

The stage manager looks at his watch and says, "I'm going to need them both back in 5 minutes..."

Agreed!

I just got back from a small "AI Finale" watching party, and everyone agreed that it had to be one of the better - if not the best - produced musical "variety show", concert, special programs to be broadcast in a long time.

*And, yes, many phone calls were made, and many favors were called in in order to get ALL of those musical acts on stage. A friend of mine was brought on just for the last week alone to assist with all the legal and music clearances for tonight's extravaganza.  He couldn't tell me any of the details, but he did say to expect some surprises, and I was most definitely surprised. :)

I'm back from seeing ALNM and it was...for the most part...quite good.  Musically, the singers were all very good.  The tempos for "You Must Meet My Wife" (and the scene leading into it) and "Every Day a Little Death" were DREADFULLY slow. :P The music director/conductor/pianist is notorious for taking songs too fast, so that was a real surprise...and not the good kind.  Anyway, the rest of the score was quite delightful.  Both leads are very good actors, but they acted just a little too much.  It did get a little (just a little) melodramatic at times.  It's supposed to be a light comedy.  But the costumes were FABULOUS!  Very detailed and just lovely.  They got the requisite standing O and there was a bit of hootin' and hollerin', but fortunately not a lot.

Overall, a good production and done very well. ;D

GLEE looked very interesting, I am hoping it will be rerun sometime around the schedule - since I don't have one of those newfangled recordering dee-vices.

I recorded it and am making a DVD for others.  Anyone else want a copy?
