Post by: bk on March 06, 2006, 12:06:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've gotten the braggadocio vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're sulking because they didn't win any Oscars.

Well, I'm off to sleep.  I'll have to think about the topic of the day.  The only movies that I can think of right now are "Gypsy" and "1776," and I don't think that they count. ;)

Goodnight, everyone!

TOD: The Spirit of St. Louis (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0051003/maindetails) (19570, with James Stewart as Charles A. Lindbergh.  Too bad the film was only nommed for special effects - Stewart was perfectly cast in this film.

I need to step back a couple of days, since I've been basically E&T.

I hereby present my report on the current tour of Joseph and the Armadillo's Multi-Scaled Paint Coat.

It is what it is.

The house was packed, particularly with youngsters, all of whom had somehow conned their parents or other relatives into paying full price for the tix.  Or the parents or other relatives had thought this was a good way to get the youngsters into the theater.  Whatever, it was the right age-group for this show, which was written to be a cantata for a kid audience in the first place.

This particular production stars Patrick Cassidy as Joseph.  He has everything the lead needs for this part.  He has a very good voice.  He has a dazzling smile.  He has shaved his chest, worked out until he's nicely buff, and applied makeup to his body to make sure you see his six-pack.

No one else in the cast is as good-looking.  They don't have to be, because they mostly keep their clothes on.

The surprise of the show is Amy Adams, a former American Yodel contestant who was suggested for the part of the Narrator by the AY crew to this production's producers.  She has a very good theater voice, and a charming personality, even though she looks (as noted in a review in the Philly Inquirer) (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/13994605.htm) like Sharon Osborn.

The grandlads enjoyed the show very much.  As such, it wasn't such a waste for der Grampa to have bought them the tix.  And I got to spend a little quality time with the son-in-law, helping him navigate the streets and finding parking, so I didn't totally waste the day either.

Going back a couple of days, DR George posted:

Quote
Oh...and they didn't have a "Daddy Johann Sebastian Brubeck."  There were only seven boys in the entire show!  They had a Mama Brubeck:

Mama started out in San Francisco
Tootin' on her trumpet loud and mean
Suddenly a voice said, "Go forth Mama,
Spread the picture on a wider screen."

It worked well enough for a high school production.

(and later)

Quote
And they changed the line:  "Hit the road Daddy, leave your common-law wife" to "Hit the road Mama, leave your worries and strife."

(plus)

Quote
I don't know if they got "official" permission to have a Mama Brubeck instead of a Daddy, but I'm sure the high school changed the line to reflect the change in gender.  And the new line isn't actually new.  When I was in Show Choir in high school (20+ years ago), we did the choral arrangement and it was censored edited so that it could be taken out of context of the show and the "worries and strife" line is in that choral arrangement.  They could very easily have just used that because it already exists and it works.

My bet is Dorothy Fields wrote the "worries" line change herself.  As for the gender bend, I believe she would have smiled and approved heartily.

Before I head back to bed, don't anyone let me forget that der B has arranged for our tix to Shenandoah at the Ford's Theater, in DC.  I need to make sure of the date, and arrange for the day off at work.

The Ford's is where der B and I saw Children of Eden, and first met DR Jose in person.  We brought him roses.  He told us about a very nice French bistro across the street, where we happily dined.  We plan on dining there again.  Jose is being blamed, of course, correctly and with pleasure.

Meanwhile, der B caught sight of a poster for Wicked, which will be playing in Philly very soon.  On line, he has discovered that the only tix left for the very limited run are for restricted view seats - not acceptable, in our minds.  The promoters of Wicked are playing their cards quite correctly, by having the show play highly limited runs in each city, making tix almost impossible to acquire.  So much for a former poster's insistance that those of us outside of NYC should wait for the show to appear in our areas and not ask for a synopsis of the show (in otherwords, ask for spoilers).

Another trip to NYC may be in order.  Maybe in tandem with Lestat?

I'll post now because I doubt that I will be caught up with yesterday's posting for most of the day!

I watched a bit of the show yesterday and then went to the bedroom and read. We went to sleep around 10:30 and I didn't know of anything Oscar (other than George Clooney and Rachel Weiz (sp) until I awoke this morning.

Happy Monday to all and now I will try to catch up.

I think both Tomovoz's bio pics are excellent choices.  I've always been fond of those Epic historical bios like Khartoum, Cromwell,  Lawrence of Arabia.  Lawrence notwithstanding, such films can sometimes be a little turgid; but I find them interesting history.  I'm also a sucker for those wildly inaccurate musical bios like Three Little Words, the "bio" of Ruby and Kalmar.

I'm sure there are more respectible, better bio films than some of those I've mentioned...but I'm drawing a blank right now.

What a wonderful Oscar Bash at HHW!

My favorite dress:  Hiya the Chinese girl's dress....she came on quite late, but it was lovely....with a black strapless fitted top with a deep heart bodice (subtly sequined) - and a reembroidered lace full skirt to the floor....or something like that!

Most speeches were fine, jokes were NOT, songs were NOT, montages were NOT -

I now have some DVD's to buy....some NOT available yet of course....GOODNIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, CRASH, WALK THE LINE, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS....

Hey All Everybody!

Feeling a mite hungover this morning from our late night revels.  Also, this is my first day back at the office in over a week, so I'm also kind of disoriented (as opposed to datoriented.)

I found two lovely packages awaiting for me at my desk:  one containing the much discussed SECOND ACT TROUBLE (which I didn't realize was a hardback), and another containing the MIRRORMASK DVD (a movie by comic book faves Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean), the JERSEY BOYS OCR, the CURIOUS GEORGE soundtrack (by a new fave of mine, Jack Jackson), and the Cleveland Orchestra ROMEO AND JULIET recording that DR Elmoore recommended a while back.  This should be a merry day of listening for me!

I assume we are not talking ACCURATE biopics for the TOD, those are few and far between.

But I will choose:

Joseph E. Levine presents Carroll Baker as Harlow (as the billing reads) - only for Miss Baker and her valiant efforts to make something of nothing, and a couple of scenes that show what the movie COULD have been...and a couple of stills where she bears an uncanny resemblance to Jean Harlow...that makeup and hair and costume plot was abandoned.

Dirk Bogarde as Franz Lizst in SONG WITH END.

Charlton Heston & Sophia Loren in EL CID.

Susan Hayward as Jane Frohman in WITH A SONG IN MY HEART.

And....although I never thought I would say this....Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin in BEYOND THE SEA.

Good morning, all!  I slept late and enjoyed every moment of it.  I have a trip to the post office today, some forms to fill out, and some Toyland writing to do, so I shall work at home and enjoy myself with a few CDs and, perhaps, telephonic conversations.

Dear Friend BK, I would be happy to offer suggestions for your workshop, but I must admit I feel a bit vague on what the overall agenda of the class is:  audition scenes and songs, history, the declineand  fall of decent singing technique, dance?  I know they've had a song to do; are they going to work on scenes?

TOD:  AMADEUS
         PRICK UP YOUR EARS
         SEVEN LITTLE FOYS
         THE SCARLET EMPRESS
         THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE

I'm caught up now in this new history of the John Wilkes Booth conspiracy, MANHUNT, and I'd like to see a Lincoln bio.

I loved Ben Stiller's "special effects" and Will Ferrell's and Steve Carrell's makeup  but I was disappointed with Jon Stewart.  I like him very much on the Daily Show and I felt like he was completely in over his head... a feeling he may have shared considering the opening video of "how I got the job"

Meryl Streep's & Lily Tomlin's introduction of Robert Altman made me laugh as well

As for the "Best Song"  all I can say is were the voters on crack?  ONE lyric "Its hard out here for a pimp trying to get money to pay the rent" if you don't count (and I don't ) the incoherent mutterings of the bunch of male rappers

The ONLY good thing I could take from that win was the obvious shock and joy of the winners who clearly didn't think they had a chance to win

Since I failed to see any of the nominated movies up for Best Picture I can't speak to the choice there.

Good morning!

It was raining when I woke up (after a very unrestful night) which mirrored my mood. But the clouds are rolling by now (a Jerome Kern reference), the sun is coming out (a Charles Strouse reference), and it looks like it might be a great day (a Billy Rose reference; who wrote the music for "Great Day"?).

Favorite biopic is probably LAWRENCE OF ARABIA but honestly, for capturing his essence, I'd certainly rank CAPOTE right up there even though it's only a few pivotal years of his life.

After I logged off last night, I watched another FIREFLY episode and enjoyed it thoroughly. This one was called "Jaynestown" and dealt with bad boy of the crew Jayne Cobb's being mistakenly honored on a planet where something dastardly he did years ago actually turned out well for the inhabitants, and he had been celebrated ever since. Probably my favorite episode of the series (though I haven't seen the last three which never aired on Fox and I never caught on FX when they ran the show.)

And I haven't a clue what I'm going to watch this afternoon. I recorded SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW in high definition off HBO-HD last night. I wasn't a big fan of the movie when I saw it in the theater (really loathed Gwyneth Paltrow's character), but with all of the computer generated backgrounds of it, I was curious how it would look in high definition, so I recorded it and may watch it today.

I also recorded TCM's broadcast of the Danny Kaye musical THE KID FROM BROOKLYN yesterday afternoon, and I watched a bit of it last night. The Technicolor is just eye-popping in this film.

However, Vera-Ellen has that overly made-up Technicolored look that Warners saddled Doris Day with in her early Warners musicals. I know in Doris' case, it was to hide her freckles. Don't know why Vera was slathered so liberally with pancake, though.

And I'm having lunch with best friend John today, so that will lift my spirits as well. Yes, I'm still brooding about that stupid upset at the Oscars last night.

As for the rest of the show, I enjoyed Jon Stewart. Yes, a little too smug, but that's his persona, and I wouldn't have expected anything different. I thought he did a fine job. Not Johnny Carson fine but fine.

Too many montages, many with no point. I ADORE film noir, but what point were they making with those clips? I don't get why it was included. The epic montage was a misfire from the get-go with so many films that weren't epics.

Oh, well, back to the drawing board for next year, fellas.

Read this question, come up with an answer and then post it. This is not a trick question. It is as it reads.  No one I know has got it right.

A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met a guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing. She believed him to be her dream guy so much, that she fell in love with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later she killed her sister.

Question: What is her motive for killing her sister?

[Give this some thought before you answer, I'll post the answer later]

As for bio pics...

The one that seems to stick in my mind, and mainly for all it's excess...

"The Music Lovers" - Tchaikovsky via Ken Russell.

Oh, then I guess "Lisztomania" could be included here too.  ;)

And in the non-Ken Russell realm...

"Impromptu" - Chopin - with Hugh Grant and Judy Davis (and Bernadette Peters).

And I'm sure other newspapers had similar headlines in their TV columns today...

"Jon Stewart - Keep Your "Daily" Job"

;)

I didn't mind John Stewart's efforts last night.  I think the fault lies - not with me, as usual - but with the way the Oscars are formatted now.  Even though most of my memories of the Oscars from the 70's and early 80's are kind of vague, the ceremonies did not seem so planned, so structured back then.  Yes, they had musical numbers, tributes and montages, but there was always a sense of impromptu in the air.  And it was this sense of liberty that allowed the hosts - especially Johnny Carson - to truly be hosts, to think on their feet, to comment when necessary, to make jokes when necessary... To be funny.

With all the worry about censors and political correctness, I have a sense that the host of the Oscars - whoever he/she may be - is following a script the whole evening, or at least a highly-suggested outline.  Even the off-the-cuff remarks have been rehearsed and run by the network execs.

...Just a thought.

Oh... I could have arranged Shenandoah tickets for you.  -Since I played auditions for the show...  In any case...

I'm gonna try to sneak back down here to catch the show in previews myself.

As for Wicked... Regardless of what a former poster may have said, I'd say see Wicked in NYC.  The touring version is quite good, but the physical production is obviously scaled down for practical reasons.  In NYC, the show basically surrounds you.

However, the touring cast is quite good, and I would love to see Julia Murney as Elphaba when she steps into the show - which I believe is very soon.  DR Ginny will be seeing her in Cincy.

And if you want house seats for Lestat... Well, I think I might know someone who can put a request in for you.

;)

Yes, the producers have been very smart in regards to booking limited runs in each city.  The DC engagement sold out in seven hours!  Even the Company House Seats were extremely limited during the course of their run at the Kennedy Center.  Of course, I'm sure that Wicked will be returning for another "Limited Engagement" in the 2007-08 season.  -And the show is already booking return engagements to LA and Denver in the coming year.

However, the one event I'm most excited about:

Sweeney Todd: The Reunion Concert - This will be a reunion of the Sondheim Celebration cast which starred Brian Stokes Mitchell and Christine Baranski.  -And I was one of the rehearsal pianists.  -Oh, and Hugh Panaro was Anthony in that production - I guess both of us may be taking a night off from Lestat next spring.  ;)

The Golden Gala concert will feature Plácido Domingo and a roster of the most acclaimed stars of the opera world, among them Anna Netrebko, Juan Diego Flórez, Denyce Graves, Salvatore Licitra, Elizabeth Futral, Samuel Ramey, Anja Kampe, Paul Groves, John Matz, Alan Held, and Carlos Álvarez. Crowning the on-stage festivities will be the world premiere of "The Audition," a musical theater piece in the style of an "opera spuffo" by composer Marvin Hamlisch and librettist Sheldon Harnick, starring Broadway diva Kristin Chenoweth and Plácido Domingo.

Here's a thought:  although the productions are often rather tacky and amateurish, when I go to see the Ohio Light Opera do operetta, from FLEDERMAUS (1874) to THE NEW MOON (1928), I like the fact that everything is played sincerely and for its reality.  Too often, in New York, operetta gets camped because of its high-flown gestures and romantic attitudes:  when City Opera prevented THE NEW MOON and THE DESERT SONG directed by Robert Johanson, the romantic plots were so camped up for their silliness that the actual comedy roles were completely over the top with shrill posturing soubrettes and ultra-nelly comedians.  How does one deal today with texts and attitudes of another time?

I just checked over at MTI's site...  18 pieces, three of which are Keyboard Books.  Looks like they just cut down on the strings.  However, the percussion books look like the originals:

Percussion 1:   Gamelan, Tympani, Large Tam-Tam, Crotales, Glockenspiel, Vibraphone, Xylophone, Ching, Large Odaiko, Bell Plate, Tsusumi, Hindu Bells, Kin, Tibetan Skull Drum, Marimba, Mokugyo, Tambourine, Suspended Cymbal, Coin Clapper, Thai Bell Tree, Odaiko, Tubaphone

Percussion 2:   Thai Bell Tree, Large Odaiko, Gran Cassa, Kyeezee, Drum Kit, Toms, Chinese Cymbal, Small Sustaining Cymbal, Piccolo Wood Block, Xylophone, Tsusumi, Hi-Hat, Mark Tree, Sistrum, Suspended Cymbal, Kin, Marimba, Tam-Tam, Chest Rattle, Gongs, Small Wood Blocks

That's a LOT of doubles!  -And if I remember correctly, when the show was running in NYC, the percussion players were some of the highest paid pit players due to the number of doubles they each had.  -It was also "infamous" for being an amazingly physical book, but it was also fascinating to watch each player in their respective "cages".

Oooh!  A conspiracy!

Except that writing the arrangment (and orchestration) for the suite takes time.

This probably conflicts with when the ballots are due from the voters.  Having been involved with ballot counting (although not for the Oscars), I can assure you that the counting takes a very short amount of time.

I could be wrong, but perhaps DR Pogue can tell us how late the ballots can be accepted.  My hunch is that they will be accepted until very close to the ceremony itself.

I found the segment with Perlman to be an innovative way of presenting the musical score nominees.  The order in which the nominees were given showed Perlman to his best advantage, first primarily as a soloist and, as the suite progressed, more and more as a part of the orchestral whole.  I did not find the order odd at all.

Oh, by the way, Salma Hayek is from Veracruz, Mexico.  Gustavo Santaolalla is Argentinian.

Well...hmmm...let's see.  If you are knowledgeable about the nominated scores -- at all -- you'd know that the most intimate and solo-oriented of the group is the Santaolalla composition ("Brokeback Mountain")...written for guitar, actually...so...the theory that we went from something intimate (the orchestral "Munich") to something suitable to an orchestral whole ("Brokeback") is really QUITE odd.

DR Ron, Ms. Hayek and Mr. Santaolalla don't even come from the same continent.  Their backgrounds are quite different.  Lumping them together makes as much sense as uniting Ghandi and Mao Zedung because they were both Asian.

Does anyone here have Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0?

I bought it them off of Ebay and was told they were "new" but when they arrived, I didn't get the book that goes with it.

Hmm...

I know that for Abode Photoshop Elements for Mac, the book that came with the software was very minimal.  Like most software nowadays, the manuals are on the set-up discs and/or accessible via on-line help menus.

Can you e-mail the seller and inquire about the manuals?  or check the original e-Bay listing for some fine print?

And since I never give up a chance for the Classical Music Geek in me to come out...

Jose, as long as you're here, maybe you could give your opinion as a musician: how well does music written for the guitar translate to the violin?  Aren't the techniques used in playing one quite different from the other?

In the end, it's all just notes.

The Art of Transcription is a true musical art.  When it's done poorly, well, we find ourselves wishing for the original instrumentation.  However, when it's done well... It's always nice hearing something new, a new color, a new interpretation.

The Spanish and Spanish-influenced works of composers such as Albeniz, Villa-Lobos, de Falla and Ravel have been freely translated from one instrument to another - usually piano to guitar, but there have been a couple of instances of guitar to piano.  And since a lot of the piano works by Albeniz were influenced by guitar patterns and rhythms, a couple of those pieces sound more at home on the guitar in some cases.

And to sort of answer your query, there is a suite of Spanish songs by Manuel de Falla that started out originally for voice and piano.  However, they also exist in versions for voice and guitar.  Then there are some rather famous transcriptions of the suite for violin or cello solo with piano.

*Note: The original set of songs numbered seven, "Siete Canciones Populares Españolas", but when when Paul Kochanski worked with de Falla to form the "Suite populaire espagnole" for violin and piano, one of the songs was dropped from the suite.  Additionally, the order of the songs in the instrumental suite was/is left up to the performer.

However, even Bach freely borrowed from himself - adapting a violin concerto for a keyboard concerto - or even some other composer's melodies.  Mozart did the same thing with his Oboe Concerto which he transcribed for Flute just in a different key.  (The Flute Concerto is in D Major, the Oboe Concerto in C Major.)  Adding to this musicological situation is that both the Oboe and Second Flute Concertos - or Concerti, if you prefer - were not discovered until this century... And it was the D Major Flute Concerto that was discovered first.  So, when the parts for the Oboe Concerto were discovered, they realized that the Flute Concerto was just a re-working of the Oboe original.  -But that's another class.

;)

And I'd be remiss in not mentioning that many pieces originally written for one instrument did not become "famous" until they were "enlarged" by someone else.  The classic example of this is Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhbition" which was originally a set of piano pieces.  Nowadays, people are more familiar with Ravel's amazing orchestration/realization of Musssorgsky's "piano miniatures".

In conclusion:

Music is only Music when it comes off the Page and goes into the Air.

And back to the Wicked tour for a sec...

Because of all those return engagements, they couldn't fit WICKED on the calendar here for next season.

We are getting, SPELLING BEE, SPAMALOT, DOUBT, and SCOUNDRELS, among others.

When I finally came inside, I put FIREFLY back on and watched a couple more episodes. The first one up was called "Out of Gas" as the good ship Serenity was floating dead in space with life support systems failing and we started having flashbacks not only to see how the ship got into such a precarious position but even DEEPER flashbacks showing how the captain rounded up the present crew coming from so many different backgrounds.

For the class, my suggestion is the old HHW standby that we love to discuss....the Eleven O'Clock number, the best and the worst....why they work, why they are needed....

Or title songs - some are sung by title characters, some are sung by the chorus, and some are sung by supporting characters....best and worst.

Speaking of title songs, was the musical CHICAGO, initially entitled ALL THAT JAZZ?

Good Evening!

I just got an amazing(!) e-mail.  And, frankly, I'm a bit stunned.  But in a good sense.

In short, I now know that I have the place in NYC that I'm subletting for as long as I want.

If I'm allowed to drive, I'm taking Mom to the doctor next Monday for her back.  I hate to say it but all the stress of my being in the hospital did something to her back and she's been in bed the past couple of days.

And I'll also say that I feel like I've been grounded or something.  If I don't get the ok to drive tomorrow I think I'm going to go banana's!

Oy!  See that phrase is catchy!

Thank's for the vibes for my Mom.

I'm finishing up one last dvd dub for the night.  An older movie called "Sweet Hostage" with Linda Blair.  One of those odd movies that I happen like.

Some of my tape are years old.   If I don't do something soon I'll lose them because the tapes will break.

I must have taped this movie by timer because the commericals are in it.  I always used to cut them when I sat and taped something.  It's kinda cool to see them.

Some of these are a LOT older then that.    The tapes of the plays were from circa 1990.

re: FRANCES mentioned earlier today.

DR JMK and I both feel the same way about that work of FICTION.  In fact it is worse to me than Carroll's HARLOW because it made so many claims as to being the "true" story....or based on such.

You could find a bit of truth here and there....and Lange looked liked Frances, though she didn't sound like her at ALL!

Oh well.....

DRJRand55, all film and dramatic bios are fiction!  No one's life is so perfectly plotted.  I loved AMADEUS, but reading this new Mozart book points up how false so much of the play and film is.  It's the writer's fantasy about the life of a genius and a colloquoy on the nature of how talents are distributed.

DR DAKOTA CELT - of course DARK SHADOWS and GENERAL HOSPITAL were my two stories - many years ago...and THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is probably the only one I watch now and then....

BUT I do have on tape the last 5 shows broadcast of my nearly all time favorite THE EDGE OF NIGHT from sometime in the 1980's....  When I watched it again a few years ago, it was like seeing a group of old friends...  My soap styles - acting, writing, sets, costumes, music - have certainly changed...

No, but AMADEUS did falsely claim that Salieri was behind his death, envied him, and wanted him dead, all rumor.  I never saw a single Frances Farmer bio on film but one of ther bios claimed she had a lobotomy; it's part of our cultural mythology by now.

Some of these are a LOT older then that.    The tapes of the plays were from circa 1990.

The cool thing is with some software I bought, I can now make stills of anything I record.  That was another thing I was testing today with those pictures of me.  It worked pretty good.

My collection of videotapes goes back to when I bought my first VCR--January, 1983.  The very first thing I taped in full was RSC's NICHOLAS NICKLEBY.

DR Danise--those pictures were from video captures?  Wow--they are so clear!  I would have thought they were actual photographs.

Refresh my memory please, DR JRand. How and when did she die?

Thank you for asking, DRMATTH.

Miss Allison (Mary Jane) Hayes was enjoying a prolific if ordinary career in Hollywood in the early 1960's - many B movies and lots of episodic television.  She wasn't a smoker or a drinker, but had some "female" complaints.  Her mother's friend Gloria Swanson suggested that Allison see her own doctor, Henry Bieler.  Dr. Bieler gave Allison a prescription for a calcium supplement and suggested she take it several times a week.

Not only didn't the original complaint get better - Allison began to exhibit MANY strange symptoms.  Dr. Bieler suggested she double her dose of the supplement - and against the advice of her friend actress Sara Shane (friend of MBARNUM), Allison did just that.

She took the supplement regularly for about four years - in the meantime she eventually lost the use of her right hand, had to walk with a cane, and several other strange maladies.  She underwent over 300 X Rays and went from one specialist to another - many of whom told her that her symptoms were psycho-somatic or worse - psychotic.

Eventually she began studying on her own, and discovered that she had lead poisoning.  A technician asked for a sample of all medications she had taken and let her know that the supplement (not regulated by the FDA and imported from England) had nearly 1000 times the safe limit of lead in it.

It was a slow death sentence, and there was nothing she could do.  Allison lived about four years longer after the diagnosis, and pleaded with the FDA to start regulating supplements - they said they were studying it...but it remains a gray area today....ask Sara Shane!

She died On February 27, 1977, a few days shy of her 47th birthday.  :'(

You can read my two-part bio of her here: (this is part two, with a link to part one).

And inspired by DRMBARNUM's earlier photo (and apologies to DR RLP because it will set his teeth on edge) - but here is another photo from the same Wolf Dog session with Allison looking much more natural.  She loved animals and children ... was the apple of her father's eye (his only daughter, born when he was 50 years old)...  and no one (even in tired old Hollywood) says a mean thing about her (except Beverly Garland)....  8)

And Jose, er, I mean Stritch, was in Goldilocks.  :)

I love "I Never Know When To Say When" and some othe songs from that show.  But I always wondered if Walter Kerr's strangely muted recation in print to musicals that became classics (like WSS and Fiddler) may have stemmed from his trying to actually create musicals, coming so close but not making it.

Well, I blame GOLDILOCKS' failure on DR Jose.  I'm quite fond of the show.  Stritch told me that Agnes DeMille walked all over Mr Kerr as the director, but I suspect that's DR Jose on the piano during "Give the Little Lady a Great Big Hand."  Russian hands Jose strikes again!

Anyone know this handsome fella?    Sigh.  I couldn't click the capture button fast enough to make myself a screen saver collection of just him.

DR DANISE where did you get this photo of me?

I first heard of the Righteous Brothers from their appearance on the TV series Please Don't Eat the Daisies.  They did Daisy Chain Melody, am I right?

LOL FJL.

When I was a kid, I loved Jean Kerr's writing.  She always made me laugh.  Why isn't MARY MARY on DVD?  Dammit!

What are you, a Diane McBain fan?  8)

Errol Flynn.

Is this from DODGE CITY or some other color western film he made?

I always liked Diane McBain; she's quite wonderful in MARY MARY, as I recall, and I always liked Joanna Barnes in AUNTIE MAME and THE PARENT TRAP.

Well it's pumpkin time for me.  I can't get used to these kind of hours--I'd never be able to get up and go to work.

I'd best say good night for now.  I have my post op to tomorrow as well so I'd better be rested or my doctor will never let me drive!

Have a good evening all!

Bought a copy of "Crash" today..  Because it was there. About the Equivalent of $10 US.

And that is not why I am listening to Hall & Oats singing "Rich Girl" at this very moment.

MMMMM  They just sang "Maneater" and I bought a copy of "Eating Raul" today as well.

"Kiss On My List" does not connect though.

Interesting coinkydink -

The first "Broadway" show that der Brucer ever saw was Goldilocks, in Philly before it got to Broadway.

With Strich.

(She was in the show, he was in the audience, they weren't dating.)

The theater where we saw Joseph and the Randy Vicar's Coat is the theater where he saw Goldilocks yea those many years ago.  The very same!

My favorite Doctor!  I never did get to meet him but I did meet a couple of people from the shows--Peter Davidson, Anthony Ainley, Colin Baker, John Nathan Turner, Nicola Boryant.  No pictures handy.  They might be part of what I lost in the "flood" (long story).

I am jealous.... I love Peter Davison... Lucky Girl!!

I tried an interesting combination for dinner tonight.

Pork loin chops (two)
Crushed pineapple (1 can)
Ginger (1 tablespoon, minced) (the plant, not the kind that hung out with Mary Ann)
Sesame seeds (1 tablespoon)
Sesame oil (1 teaspoon)
Cayenne pepper (1 dash)

In a medium skillet, mix the pineapple, ginger, sesame seeds, and cayenne over medium heat, let flavors meld for maybe three or four minutes.  Add the pork loin chops on top of the mixture, and cover for eight to ten minutes, turning the chops over about half-way through.  Drizzle the sesame oil over the chops, and serve the chops with the pineapple mixture either on top or underneath.

Corn and Rice-a-Roni make good accompaniments.

Back from supper with Miss Tammy Minoff.  I've decided to talk about all kinds of songs from musicals - thanks for the suggestions - eleven o'clock numbers, opening numbers, I want songs, charm songs, comedy songs, etc.  That should kill an hour very quick.

Must relax for a mo, write the notes, then write a page of notes for class tomorrow.

I come home and everyone disappears.  How unseemly.  Still, a rather amazing post-Oscar day of postings, wouldn't you say?  In fact, I'd say that if folks hadn't WUSSBURGERED we would have been in the top seven posting days.  Well, perhaps we'll have a frenzy in the next hour and fifteen minutes.

Adelphia had a hiccup and lost synch with the computer, so naturally we had to do the ridiculous unplugging of everything, shutting the computer down, replugging then relogging on, after which all was well.

I wish.  I really should be off to bed.  I wanted to say hello.  Tomorrow is a “fun” packed day and then I’m off to LA for a wedding shower.

Bruce and Penny I will try and call while I’m there.  I barely have time to do everything I need to do before leaving Wednesday morning.  I still haven’t set up plans with all my family.  There are several people I haven’t seen in a few years I really must see.

I have friends who return to their hometowns and have very few people to see.  I on the other hand am far too good at staying connected with folks.  ;D

I had a good day at work, BTW, which is By The Way in computer lingo.  We're training staff for a new store just south of us, nicely out of our immediate area but more convenient for some of our customers.

The new staff is very nice, and we're all trying to speed them along in feeling comfortable in their jobs.  Still, they've got a lot to learn in less than a month.  I don't envy them.
