TOD:

THIS is the most relaxing holiday album that I know of...

This Saturday, Tingstad and Rumbel are going to be here in Olympia with David Lanz!  I'm working concessions for the concert. :)

The D does D musical was here in Melbourne a few years back - no one bothered!
It was competing with "Menopause the musical" which certainly found its audience.

Lovely choice......only people make you cry.  :D

Clint Eastwood singing it (Wanderin' Star) makes me cry!

Well... I need to head to the grocery store to stock up some food.  For me.  I have to say, I'm quite surprised at the amount of junk food that is currently in my parents' pantry.  I'm guessing some of it is there for when the grandchildren come to visit, but, still the amount of potato chips, honey-roasted nuts, Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Doritos, etc. is just a bit too too.  -And too tempting.  So... Off to Ukrop's I go.

:)  Yes!  Those are great fun - both to perform and to listen to.

This be fun!

A Christmas Carol

One very familiar type of song is the Christmas carol. Although it is perhaps a bit out of season at this time. However, I'm informed by my "disk jockey" friends - of whom I have none, that in order to get a song popular by Christmas time, you have to start plugging it well in advance. So here goes. It has always seemed to me after all. That Christmas, with its spirit of giving, offers us all a wonderful opportunity each year to reflect on what we all most sincerely and deeply believe in. I refer of course, to money. And yet none of the Christmas carols that you hear on the radio or in the street, even attempt to capture the true spirit of Christmas as we celebrate it in the United States. That is to say the commercial spirit. So I should like to offer the following Christmas carol for next year, as being perhaps a bit more appropriate.

Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say "when."
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens,
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.

On Christmas Day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.

Relations, sparing no expense'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil.
"Just the thing I need! How nice!"
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.

Hark the Herald Tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.
God rest ye merry, merchants,
May you make the Yuletide pay.
Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and buy!

So let the raucous sleigh bells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend Kris Kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky.
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.
Actually I did rather well myself, this last Christmas. The nicest present I received was a gift certificate "good at any hospital for a lobotomy". Rather thoughtful.

Jeezus Keerist! That family whines a lot.  And I mean, A Lot!

Many of the people in this family remind me of me. So, I don't mind the whining and complaining at all. In fact, I find it endearing.

I'm heading down now to clean up for tonight's dinner/gift exchange. We'll also be watching Christmas-related videos after dinner. Last year it was HOLIDAY INN, so I don't know what's in store this year.

TNT should be pleased with the SAG nominations (The Company, The Closer, Saving Grace)

Burton and Depp will be sorely displeased!

Burton/Depp Interview

Quote
JD: This was very different than most movies, than most characters, because the character actually kind of came out of the singing, out of the, you know, the words, Sondheim's words, his melodies, the emotion that the arrangements evoke -- so yeah, that's where I first ... I heard him before I saw him, I guess. But also like we'd talked about early on, these great, old silent films, silent film stars like Lon Chaney, and on into the next generation of actors like Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff ...

TOD:  One of my favorite albums to relax to...and to become melancholy with...is Phoebe Snow's first album "Phoebe Snow."

From start to finish, it is perfection.

I always loved Phoebe Snow. I thought HARPO'S BLUES was just brilliant. Still love it.

Senator from Oregon comes thru:

Quote
This week, Log Cabin's strongest ally in the U.S. Senate, Gordon Smith, introduced the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act (S. 2521), which would extend domestic partner benefits to federal employees.  This bill, which Sen. Smith introduced with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), would provide benefits to same-sex domestic partners of federal employees such as life and health insurance, family and medical leave, and eligibility to participate in federal retirement programs.

This comes one week after Sen. Smith also introduced a bill to finally end the draconian ban on HIV-positive visitors to the U.S.  (A practice, by the way, that even China has recently ended, leaving America in the rare company of Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Libya as countries that discriminate against HIV-positive travelers and immigrants.)

Back from a lovelier than lovely lunch with Brian Childers, who plays Danny Kaye in The Kid From Brooklyn.  I had a very nice time and he's a wonderful fellow, and I'm hoping he'll stick around and post from time to time.

Alas, this Mr. Smith will probably not be going back to Washington.  His approval ratings here are tanking and he just got excoriated by the Oregonian this morning for his defense of Trent Lott's Thurmond comments the other day (which he is now backpedaling on, saying he was misunderstood).  OTOH, DS Betsy got to know him personally when she was Media Director for the State Senate Caucus here and Smith was still in the Oregon Senate, and she said he was one of the friendliest people down there at that time.

While I was out, I went ahead and picked up my ticket for tomorrow morning's first showing of "Sweeney Todd" at 11:15am.  -And after checking the movie listings, it appears that "Sweeney" will only be playing in one movie theatre here in Richmond.  At least this weekend.  I'm guessing I'll probably run into a couple of old friends tomorrow.  We shall see.

DerB, you may find this hard to believe, but I was actually a Young Republican once (and not just because I was young once, LOL).  I have a personally autographed picture and letter from Richard M. Nixon.  My mother's bridge partner was his campaign chairman for the western states in the 1968 campaign and he gave me Rose Mary Woods' private address to send a fan letter to (this was obviously years before Ms. Woods became infamous for her dictaphone-erasing skills), and I was very excited to get a response from him several weeks later.
