Title: WHY I HATE THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE
Post by: bk on December 10, 2009, 12:26:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a rant, and now it is time for you to post until the USPS cows come home - they're currently filling out customs forms and the big ones, as they weigh over sixteen ounces.

bk - First of all, I know that all those USPS forms can be a hassle, but, just be thankful that you're receiving orders from overseas. (And I know you know that, so...)

Secondly, and I know a couple of us DRs have mentioned this before, but... If you registered for a free account with the USPS Online Services, you could print labels, postage and customs forms online. Additionally, by registering with the USPS you would then qualify for at home package pick-up.  This would also make it easier to track all of your orders, and even arrange for merchandise returns if needed.  AND the USPS offers up to a 14% discount when you use their Click and Ship (https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do) system.

Anthony is looking at new cameras and will probably get a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. It's easy to use and the picture quality is very good (for a point and shoot). The two things he doesn't like is the power source is a rechargeable lithium battery and it doesn't come with a memory card, you have to buy one along with the camera (it does come with a battery charger though). The Canon PowerShot A1000 IS uses AA batteries (supplied with the camera) and comes with a 32mb memory card (ahh, the days when 32 megabytes was considered huge) so at least you can take some pictures right out of the box.

No, it's just a show that DR Sandra and I enjoy very much. It's about Arthur Read (an anthropomorphic 8 year old aardvark) and his family. He represents the average American 3rd grader. He has two sisters, a mother, a father and one maternal grandparent and one paternal grandparent. He also has a dog  and a  best friend, Buster, a rabbit who likes to eat.

Arthur (http://pbskids.org/arthur/)

The show is on PBS Kids (one of the digital channels on non-cable television) at 7am and 7pm every day. Now that I'm on vacation I can indulge and watch Arthur.

Good morning, all! I have several things to accomplish today: the first is to finish up the Main Report revisions, organize them and take them to Toyland. After that, I have a band rehearsal for Brent Barrett's show at Birdland this weekend. Then, I come home and chill out. I also have to deal with a bad electric connection that's giving me computer grief.

DR singdaw, I had the Mozart Christmas album, but I cannot locate it this morning. I've had it for over 10 years, and it looks as if they've gven it a brand spanking new cover. The old one was red, as I recall.

First, breakfast.

They are distant cousins.  In fact, anybody with the last name of Druxman, Druxerman or Druxinman are "closely" related.

They (we) are all descendants of three brothers who came to N. America from Russia during the late 1800s.  One wound up in Canada, another in NY and the third (my grandfather) in Washington State.  None of the brothers ever saw each other again, but in 1999 all three branches of the family got together for a weekend reunion in Vancouver, B.C.

Actually, there was a 4th brother who wound up in Argentina, but nobody has heard from that side of the family since the late 1930s.

DR Cillaliz it sounds like we had about the same amount of snow (you said 10 inches, we had 25 cms). I think they were happy we didn't get more (it was supposed to be 35cms).

The problem here is snow removal. Not for the highways, or even for where i live (west of montreal). But for everywhere where there is parking on the streets. It becomes a complete disaster and takes at least 4 days to clear.

re: last night's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE eliminations

Dialidol actually had the results right on. They knew the bottom 2 for both the girls and guys. So i was somewhat prepared. I will say i was happy that they saved ashleigh. But i was really unhappy with the girl they sent home. Especially considering how amazing she was the night before. I was
really not happy.  I wonder if kathryn is now so popular because of the
judges pimping her. Or my sis thinks that she just looked so similar to noelle that now that noelle is gone she doesn't look like anyone else. It's weird that ellenore was so popular and now she was in the bottom. As for
the guys, as long as jakob was safe i didn't care. For some reason russell is the most popular. I think he is sweet. But i much prefer jakob. i really wanted to see ryan dance with his wife. I'm not crazy about him, but i really disliked legacy. So i am totally fine with him leaving. But i would have much rather had ellenore leave than mollee. I get why she might irk some fans. But she was so good during the performances this week. The first number she did with jakob was my favorite number of the night. I feel so bad that she had to go after such an incredible performance. :(

I have several rants, but they pretty much useless.  I suppose the way people drive is what makes me crazy right now - pulling out into traffic in front of you when there is no one behind you and they could wait since you have the right of way, not using turn signals, following too close, talking on the telephone while driving....all the usual complaints.

SO true.   It's warmed up tp -9 here right now.  The wind chill was in the -20s this morning.  It was a bit nippy as I cleared off the end of the driveway.  Actually some guy on the elevator was complaining about the cold and how cold he gets.  I asked if he's tried wearing long underwear.  He said "Goodness, no, that would be too hot"
He deserves to be cold.

In completely unrelated news, I thought last night that it was my illness making me mishear things at my church choir/bells/orchestra rehearsal.  Stuff was just not sounding right.  I quickly determined, however, that two of the "big" new Christmas releases from Alfred Music are littered with typos.  I couldn't believe it.  They are getting a BK-sized rant call from me this morning.  Should I tape it and upload it to YouTube?  ;)

DR MISS KAREN are all the children clothed?  How many parents wanted Suzie or Johnny to wear "something else?"

Not completely -- pulling the last of the Mexican accessories today (and after some confusion backstage last night, we found out that they added a little girl to the Polish scene but didn't update the stage manager's nor costumer's list back when they added her -- so I get to make another dang Polish headdress -- yeesh! -- and the St. Lucia headdress is a bit too big so have to adjust that one...).  The only parent comment last night was about all the stringy hair of the girls in their faces (I wanted to say not my department -- see hair and make-up -- but as a costumer that is one of my pet peeves -- especially doing period or specific ethnic looks because I want all that hair and bangs pulled back and out of their faces cause it does mess of the "look" I'm going for). Told her I had already told them plus kept telling them after every scene that in all of those countries with those traditional costumes the hair is back in puns, braids, whatever. I always tell them that from out in the audience that the pile of hair on the shoulders looks like a gerbil or some little critter lying there (and it really does!). And the Veronica Lake look must be back "in" these days because several of the older girls have the longer bangs coming across/sweeping across the one eye (told them the pirate look wasn't working, we need to see both eyes).

I was livid with the post office yesterday myself: NO MAIL! AT ALL!

I am expecting quite a few Amazon deliveries which have shipped, and I just found it hard to believe that none of them had gotten here yesterday. Maybe today I'll have a porch full of boxes.

DR Matt H, perhaps they are stuck somewhere in the snow.....seriously, if they had to come through the midwest, there could definitely be delays.   I've had a couple emails from UPS telling me my packages are delayed due to weather.  I know you don't have the snow, but if they had to go through an airport that's snowed in, well... just a guess

My rant would be about prosecutors never keeping their word.  You reach an oral agreement, talk to your client, act on the fact that you have an agreement then when you get it in writing it's completely different and the response is always, well, yes, I agreed with you but my supervisor said we can't do that.   The latest one was the supervisor telling me over five different times he'd join in a motion I was filing.  I filed the motion and a week later he said "just wanted to give you a heads up that I won't be joining the motion after all" .    It drives me crazy!

Macy's National Believe Day (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Macys-Declares-National-bw-480431528.html?x=0&.v=1)

and as part of the celebration they're "Calling All Virginias" and awarding them $10 gift cards.  Don't you think a Virginia whose BIRTHDAY coincides with the promotion should get something extra special?

We were already planning to go to one of the malls in Cincinnati tomorrow that has a Macy's.  They don't need to know that I really want to see the new Nordstrom and Vera Bradley stores.

This defensive driving online course I'm taking to get a discount on my car insurance rates is really very interesting.  The course time is 6 hours, and they won't let you advance to the next screen until what they have determined is an "appropriate" amount of time has passed.  There is a tick-down clock that lets you know, but it is still frustrating if you're a quick reader.

And then there are various devices to make sure that you're paying attention.  If you don't advance to the next page within a certain acceptable time frame, it logs you out.  In addition, there are various "pop quizzes" that flash up on the screen that you have to answer within a certain number of seconds to verify that you're who you say you are.  At other times, it flashes on the screen that you have to call a toll free number within a certain number of seconds and do a voice-print verification.

bk - First of all, I know that all those USPS forms can be a hassle, but, just be thankful that you're receiving orders from overseas.

Gee Jose, you could do a USPS commercial..  ;)   Very helpful info, thanks

:)

Well...

My brother, Don, is a regular eBay seller/buyer, and takes full advantage of the USPS "freebies".  His "day job" also involves shipping out various computer manuals and software, and sometimes he takes that work home with him.  He has one corner of his home office set up as a mailing center.  So, I've seen him and the "Click and Ship" system in action.  Sometimes the hardest part of the process is peeling the backing from the adhesive labels.

*One great "freebie" is their SCAN form.  And just what is a SCAN form, well... (from USPS.com):

Quote
What is a Shipment Confirmation Acceptance Notice (SCAN) Form?

The United States Postal Service® has a PC Postage feature called Shipment Confirmation Acceptance Notice (SCAN). You can use this feature to obtain a “Shipment Accepted” status for packages shipped using PC Postage applications. When a customer goes online to ship multiple packages, a SCAN Form (PS Form 5630) can be created at the end of the transaction. This form has one barcode associated with all of the packages in the shipment.

The mailer can give the packages to a letter carrier or bring the packages to the retail window. When the U.S. Postal Service™ employee scans the barcode on the SCAN Form, every package in the shipment receives a “Shipment Acceptance” event from the Post Office™. This single scan enters all of your associated packages into our database as “Shipment Accepted”. Both you and the recipient can see when a package was entered into the Postal Service’s mailstream by using USPS.com’s® Track & Confirm tool. Small businesses and online retailers can show customers that shipments really are on their way.

The SCAN Form is designed to better meet customer needs regarding tracking and visibility. It is important to note that items with online postage labels will show only the “Shipment Accepted” event scan. With this feature, mailers will have a complete online solution for shipping expedited packages - online labels with postage, free packaging, free Delivery Confirmation™ service, free Carrier Pickup service, and the ability to validate shipment acceptance.

*And now for the fine print...

The USPS "Click and Ship" system prints out a combined label and postage, and, due to the size of the label, it's meant for large envelopes and packages.  -The "C&S" labels may be too big to use on CD mailers.  However...

The USPS also has an online "Shipping Assistant" which prints out labels only. However, the "Shipping Assistant" also allows online processing of domestic and international mail, Priority Mail, and Customs Forms.  So, if you already have a postage meter at home, this is the other alternative, AND you can even integrate it with your postage meter to print out mailing and confirmation barcodes.

TOD - The biggest rant I remember having was to our primary care physician when his office installed an automated phone answering system.  It was one of those things where if you're this press 1, if you're that press 2, etc.  The way they had it set up initially, other physicians were to press 1, others 2, 3, and 4, and, insultingly, patients calling to schedule appointments or inquire about their medical care were number 5.  I let Dr. F know exactly what I thought of that and said, "I can't believe I'm the only patient to complain about this."  His response was, "No, you're just the most vocal."

After a while, the greeting was changed so that now patients press 1.

DR Ben - Thankfully, memory cards are quite cheap now - especially compared to their prices two years ago.  It's worth the wait in line at Best Buy.

I found it only moderately appealing, but I'm willing to give it a few more episodes.  The DH wasn't quite so generous.... (I had to finish the pilot on my own)          :(

we watched the first 10 minutes.  so far we are not sure we shall return, have only saved it because of you.  i've been waiting to read comments here.

We lasted twice as long as Jane and Keith, but will not be returning.  I really wanted to like it, DR Edi, sorry.

Ginny the words of encouragement from Richard are a great help.  Did he surpass the expected recovery of arm mobility or was that always expected to return?

Jane, to be honest, he was more diligent with the PT after the surgery on his right shoulder than he was after the left.  Guess which one has better mobility now?

no, not the left?  how much mobility does he have in eack shoulder?

DR Jane - sorry I did see your question then got distracted.  Of course, it's his right shoulder that healed more fully because he stuck with the PT longer.  His left is much better than before the surgery, but he can tell the difference.  The PT makes ALL the difference.

i'm soooo relieved the pt side is the best :)  how long was he in pt for?  i thought the script was initially once a week and very happy to learn it is twice a week.  i forgot to ask what it will be after a month is up.  i'm being very good about my home stretches.  i need to stretch my ham-strings in order to bend over farther to dangle the shoulder lower.  i'm presuming richard did/does this stretch.

Neither of us can remember exactly how long the PT went on, but Richard says it was basically controlled by our insurance company.  They determine the number of visits you can have in a time period, but the at-home work is just as important.  He said, "Tell her to do exactly what they tell her to do!"

*Sadly, this week's episode has the potential to be truly dreadful - which is what usually happens after a pretty good week.  Now, of course, if he's just on stage shirtless the whole show and does some push-up every now and then, well...  ::)

**I'm also wondering if SNL is going to allow any of the "under 18" crowd in for this week's taping.  God knows it's probably going to add to the Holiday madhouse of Rockefeller Center.

I also thought GLEE was most excellent last night with good musical numbers.

I also really enjoyed last night's episode. But it sort of bugged me that they did not show them announce the winner.

Also a) why do the cheerleaders wear their custumes all day long at school? and b) why do they make up new numbers for sectionals every show (wouldn't they pick these way in advance and practice?)

That would bug the crap out of me too.

Maybe you should just carry a recording device with you and after they make the deal just remind them you have it all on tape!

A) Wearing cheerleader "costumes" all day at school is nothing new, especially during football/cheer season.  -I also sense that it was more of a Sue Sylvester directive than anything else. -Also a directorial choice to visualize the "cool kids".

B) It's a TV show.  *And if they didn't come up with new numbers each show, there would have not been enough music to fill up the "Music of "Glee", Vol. 2" which just came out - and only a few weeks after Vol. 1 dropped.  ;)

My rant is why do some stores advertise specials in their flyers and then when you get there (on the first day of the sale) they act as if you are crazy.

They not only don't have the item. But they have to spend time looking all over the store. Then they look in the back of the store.  Then they ask other clerks. And then when you remind them it is the first day of the sale they say, "well sometimes these things happen".

These kids have been wearing those outfits every day since last may!  I would have thought that they would change into them just for cheer pratice.

B)I understand that they have to show the tv viewer new numbers each show. I was just wondering if it was supposed to make sense. It's fun to watch. But seems so odd. i would have thought they would have been practicing the same numbers for the whole year! I'm not sure how they could have explained showing us the new numbers. I guess it just seemed really odd to me!

A) Yes, cheerleaders wear their uniforms at school during school hours.

B) It wasn't really supposed to make sense.  However, competitive show choirs always have a full program of music ready - at least 45 minutes worth.

Also keep in mind that even though the pilot aired back in May, the "semester" only really started in the Fall, in September.  They've only been "in school" for one semester, three months.  The Regionals will take place in the spring semester... And that will start to air in April.  -Otherwise, Quinn would have already had her baby by "now".

Anthony is looking at new cameras and will probably get a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. It's easy to use and the picture quality is very good (for a point and shoot). The two things he doesn't like is the power source is a rechargeable lithium battery ....

I have a Canon Powershot (an old model) and I love the rechargeable battery. I only recharge about once a month. And I use my camera a lot. I don't like the AA batteries. They don't last long, and you always have to take extra batteries whenever you go out.

That's the very camera I bought this past autumn, DR Ben.  My only gripe is that it's a wee bit smallish for my big oaf fingers.

My current also has to do with USPS.  Last Friday, I order Christmas stamps through their website.  I often do this and generally, I receive the stamps a few days later.  Well even though I received an e-mail on Monday informing me that the stamps have been shipped, I've yet to receive them.  Not only that, but the tracking number they gave me brings up nothing when I enter it on the website's Tracking page.

I hadn't considered that, but you could be right. I got no packages today either (though I did at least get some other mail).

Jennifer,

Do you honestly think GLEE could get any ratings at all if they showed the same numbers week after week? This is a kind of fictional writers' license you just have to accept if you're going to watch the show.

And I thought DR Jose's answer about a Sue Sylvester directive was RIGHT ON THE MONEY. Whether any cheerleaders anywhere else in the world wears their outfits to school every day, Sue's cheerleaders DEFINITELY would.

I also watched the Making-of documentary on HIGH ANXIETY before heading out to lunch. 29 minutes of fairly pedestrian praise for a mediocre film. Hitchcock's granddaughter was there to give it her seal of approval, and the surviving cast and crew also praised the film highly.

When I got back, I watched HIGH ANXIETY on Blu-ray. By far the worst of the transfers thus far with not terrific detail and a milky contrast that made the first half of the picture drab to look at. Later scenes were better, but it's still not nearly as impressive as THE TWELVE CHAIRS or SILENT MOVIE that I watched last night.

I remember that cheerleaders in my high school used to wear their uniforms on Game Days.

I also remember reading an article on GLEE specifically that said at first they were dressing the cheerleaders as well - but to make it easier on the costumers AND the budget and to help indentify the characters, the Cheerios would always wear their uniforms.

My long day is over and it's been quite a day: I had several jobs to finish up here before I could go out and around 11:15 I headed down to Toyland. I talked to Joshie who's been working on Kate Baldwin's show at Feinstein's this weekend, and while I was talking to him, I thought of a solution to one of the charts for Brent's rehearsal. When I got to Toyland, I took care of all the Main Report problems and sat at my desk and wrote a new clarinet part for "O Holy Night." On the recording, it's a cello part, and we have no cello for this performance so I've been rewrting some bass parts to accommodate some of the cello lines. Since there's no reed on "O Holy Night," I had a clarinet that could easily take over the cello's lines and the bass could go back to his recording part. When I finished it, I packed it up with the other recording materials and headed to the band rehearsal, which began at 2.

I think the Birdland shows will be wonderful; we have an excellent band and I orchestrated a new number last night to close the show. Brent will be singing as well a comedy number and all the songs on "Christmas Mornings."
I'm getting quite excited about it.

Well, the day is finally at an end.  My Lord, what a day.  Cason came here at ten and by the time we were through packaging, doing the big packages, filling out more forms and getting postage on the big packages, and then lugging all of it to the post office it was one-thirty.  I then took Paramount their copies, and then the best part of the day occurred - we stopped at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles on Gower, one of LA's great eateries.  Last time I was there was with the Wechters and that must be seven or eight years ago.  Well, two years ago they expanded and instead of their teeny-tiny hole-in-the-wall digs, they now have a second spacious dining room and plenty of places for hungry diners to sit.  We got there at two, got right in, and Cason ordered the half fried chicken and two waffles, more food than I have ever seen - a huge leg, huge breast, huge thigh, and huge wing plus the two huge waffles.  He ate about two-thirds of the waffles, and all the chicken except for the breast, which he took home.  I had the Carol C. special - one breast, one waffle.  Then we each ordered one biscuit and we split a very small side of potato salad - I only had two little bites of the latter.  The chicken breast was HUGE, but I ate all of it and all the waffle and I'm now really full, but boy was it incredible.  More in the notes.  Then I came home, picked up mail, went to the bank, and that was that.

New episodes of COMMUNITY and PARKS & RECREATION to suffer through.

I have been watching some DVD's sent to me by the birthday boy hisseff DR MBARNUM.  I have now seen PROMISES PROMISES, the movie starring Miss Jayne Mansfield and Mr Tommy Noonan....I am not sure where this picture played in 1963, but Miss JM (not Joan Marshall) appeared in half a dozen topless scenes.

After my appointment and errands, I came home and changed into winter clothes--jeans, cotton turtleneck, wool sweater, and socks--then turned on the space heater in my room (borrowed from another roommate who is out of town). I'd consider longjohns, except mine are, of course, in storage, as I didn't expect to need them in LA.

My other roommate, the owner, not only does not want to turn the heat on very often, when she does the thermostat is at 58. She also opens many windows at 9 or 10 am. I like fresh air, but this is ridiculous!

Yes, I used to tell me people that I was a 32 megabyte memory card, just to get dates.

Does it allow time to pause and post on HHW or did you get logged out? ;)

It drives me crazy!

i had no idea that went on, at least on a semi-regular basis.  it doesn't seem right.

Oh, it goes on all time.   Sometimes things turn out ok...the one that was driving me the most crazy when I posted this turned out ok today.  Actually better than ok.

Tonight I watched HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I. I hadn't seen it in some time, and I had forgotten how truly episodic it was, really without any pretense of telling a story. Just a series of blackout skits, musical numbers, and extended sketches with lots of suggestive humor. Funny but not much of a film.

The waffle is on one side of the plate, the fried chicken is on the other, if you're having just one piece.  When it's 1/4 or 1/2 chicken, then it's on a separate plate.  One eats them separately or alternates between them.
