Title: OUTRE
Post by: bk on February 18, 2006, 12:10:56 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wild and wooly and outre, and now it's time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance).

Where is everybody?  I sound like Rise Stevens on the old LADY IN THE DARK recording.  I cannot believe I'm post #3.

Good morning, all!  DR TCB, I prefer to work the morning shift!

I have nothing to report and very little to read this morning.  I'm off to edit some Toyland music, and then I needs must hie me home for some NYCGMC and Karen Ziemba work.

TOD:  I decided around 2004, after a horrifyingly disastrous attempt at romance to never go there again.  I won't dance, don't ask me and I'll never fall in love again.

'morning, DR elmore.  Can't have you sitting here all by yourself, now can we?

DH Richard left quietly for his shape-note day, and I slept in until about 8:20.  Today, I'm going to sort books for the AAUW sale and have my hair cut.

Good Morning!

I'm up... I'm up... And I really don't have to be...  So... I may head back to bed for another hour or so since I still feel just a tad bit not-fully-rested... Or I may have some green tea and proceed from there...

*However, I guess my body and my mind are gearing up for the Lestat orchestra rehearsals in a few weeks.  The first couple of them start at 9:00AM.  9:00AM!?!?!?!  -And they're being held over at a place in midtown... Which is all the way over on 12th Ave... So, I'll have to leave a good bit of lead time for the walk over from 8th Avenue since those will be the long blocks.

19 musicians up at 9:00AM on a Saturday?!??!?

::)

Ooh... Are the arrangements for the "Christmas Gift" working out?
Title: Re:OUTRE

As for the Topic of the Day...

"This Time the Dream's On Me" - sung by Ella Fitzgerald from her Harold Arlen Songbook.

...I still remember coming home from work one day... Steve was at his computer... And I just started rushing around, trying to find my box set of "The Songbooks"...  I found it, put the Arlen disc in the CD player... Found the track...  Pushed play... And we started slow-dancing in the kitchen.

:)

Ain't I romantic?

And I'm also really fond of any of the tracks on Nancy LaMott's "Beautiful Baby" album...  Well, any Nancy LaMott recording/rendition.  -She is missed.

As for the snowboarding...

I actually think the Snow-Cross - or whatever they call it - is kind of cool.  Not strange at all.  It's an actual race against each other, rather than a race against the clock.  It's just like a track and field event in the snow.

I am, however, very pleased with my furniture delivery men. They said 7:30-8:00 and were here at 7:25!  Hoo and Ray...no waiting on aisle 3.

Anyway, I love the new sofa and chair - it's SOOO much better than the enormous sofa and chair (What was I thinking) ...although one leg on the chair is a little short, they are going to check and probably will get a replacement for me...which means if I decide to get the area rug that looks way cool with the set, I can get free delivery when they replace the chair!  The area rug is on sale...I may have to make a trip to the furniture store.

DR Rodzinski - I clearly remember that 101 Strings album in my parents' record collection.  They had a lot of 101 Strings, as well as the Mantovani Strings too.  The one cover that sticks in my mind was for a box set entitled, "The Look of Love", I believe... very alluring set of eyes.

Good morning!

Yes, our spring weather in gone, but the temps haven't totally plunged into the freezer yet. It was still tolerable outside this morning, but the temps are supposed to drop during the day leading to a possibility of sleet later.

Well, it IS February, after all!

Last night, DR MBarnum wrote:

"And BK have you heard anything about the region 2 release of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN?

I am trying to decide if I should buy it or wait and see if Universal ever decideds to release it in the U.S. during my lifetime."

That's why I burned a DVD copy of it the last time TCM showed it. I got tired of waiting. I'm sure it'll be released eventually, but I like to watch it once or twice a year and can't wait for its infrequent TV showings.

And thanks, DR MBarnum, for the heads up on THE GREAT WALTZ.

Jose- It isn't that snowboard cross is strange. It was the specific thing that happened yesterday. A girl was in the clear for the Gold medal, nobody near her, and she did a little hotdog showboat move near the finish line, fell, and was passed by someone who was light years back.

Interesting about the Look of Love. That one I posted is called The SOUND of Love. Which sounds like a moaning woman.

I won't knock that Rise Stevens/LADY IN THE DARK album. For years, it was the only near-complete version of the score, so I became rather fond of it. Of course, with the Maria Friedman version available, it's rather obsolete now.

A GOLDEN BOY question:

I never got the original Sammy Davis Jr. version with his strained vocals. My LP (and of course the CD) contains his redone recordings on four numbers.

Is his voice really raw and unlistenable on the original cuts? I can hear some of the raspiness in some group numbers that are still on the released CD version (and on the LP I still have), but were his solos really THAT bad or did the rawness give some depth to his character rather than being that of a crooner trying to play a serious role?
Title: Re:OUTRE
Post by: Matt H. on February 18, 2006, 08:52:33 AM
I'm asking because I almost bought what looked like the original GOLDEN BOY LP off Ebay last night but decided against it.

Still can't believe Broadway Angel didn't include those original vocals as bonus tracks when they released the CD.

Good morning all.
Not sure if I ever got around to sharing this, but my hardrive died a painful death last week.  After getting a new one installed in my laptop (thank you, dad) I'm now attempting to rebuild my life on here.  All of my important files and hundreds of pictures are gone and can't be replaced.  But because I had all my music on my ipod, I can theoretically transfer all of it back on to the computer.  If done wrong, however, it will delete all the files off of the ipod.  But I've got to try...so here goes.

To all Oregon HHW folk, if you hear cries of anguish and pain from the north, don't worry, it'll just be me mourning the loss of 1000 song files, should I do this wrong.

Actually, my "strange" comment was in regards to DR Jennifer's comment about the event in general earlier in the day.

However, I did catch the interview with Bob Costas last night, and she seemed OK.  She knew what she did, and, yes, it cost her the gold, but she still ended up on the Olympic podium. I have a sense all the brou-ha-ha over this will die down faster than people think.

DR Jose-
Here's HGTV's articles  on colors. I'm sure you know this, but it sometimes helps to get ideas. They have a lot of rooms you can look at. I have a great color idea for my livingroom when I have time to paint again

Those are cool pictures!  Very clear.

Right now, I'm at work and listening to the Prague cast recording of Les Misérables.  Man, do they have a lot of syllables...and very few vowels! ;) But I can "hear" their acting, mainly because I've had the original London cast recording since 1986 or so.  Pretty good.

In anticipation of the Fox musicals arriving on DVD next week, I took one of my personally made Fox DVD-Rs off the shelf, and it turned out to be DOWN ARGENTINE WAY. I'm hoping that the official Fox DVDs will be a lot more deeply saturated in color than the versions Fox is showing on their Movie Channel. It looks OK, but it isn't that deeply saturated Technicolor I remember, and the Nicholas Brothers number "Argentina" looks much better ( sharper, deeply rich color) on THAT'S DANCING! than it does on this DVD I burned off the FMC.

Glad things turned out all right for you, DR Ann. I, too, have had more than one hard drive give up the ghost on me and have lost lots of prized pictures and files, so I now never let pictures sit on my hard drive for more than a week or so before I burn them to a picture CD.

Back from rehearsal.  As I left, I noticed my back tire was looking very bad, as in lost a lot of air.  I'd noticed it last night leaving the theater and I'd put some air in it.  So, I had one of those horror drives, trying to make it to a gas station before it went completely flat.  Naturally, traffic on Ventura Blvd was out of control and it took me fifteen minutes to go less than a half-mile.  What is wrong with this city?  I got there in time - the man took the tire off and like a homing pigeon immediately found the problem - a nail - a nice big fat ugly nail - he removed it, plugged it, and was able to save the tire.  By that time, I was so behind schedule that I just didn't have the energy to go to the book fair - I wouldn't have gotten home until after five and would have had no time to relax.  So, for the first time in ages, I probably won't make it down to the fair, unless I try to go for an hour tomorrow morning.

Back from seeing CURIOUS GEORGE with my sister and my grandneice Taylor. Very cute movie and I laughed many times. They did a perfect job of capturing the cuteness, innocence, and retro look of the books. They did not add any hip humor or crude jokes nor did they have the monkey talk.

This was a perfect movie for the kids...and it had some very touching moments and we all really enjoyed it!

And yes, I am mourning the closing of "The Woman in White" this weekend in NYC and later on this month in London.  I do have a picture of the marquee that I took when I was in London for 4 hours last summer.  I guess it was not meant to be.

DR Matthew - Have a good time assembling the Crepe Cake.  Thankfully, that's the "fun part". As you mentioned earlier, making the crepes is the tedious part of the process.  *Next time, if you're pressed for time, there are some pretty good pre-made ones in the grocery stores now. :)

Takashimaya here in NYC sells a crepe cake in the tea room that made by another bakery here in the City.  It's actually a very light and refreshing dessert with the filling basically a light pastry cream flavored with Japanese citrus, yuzu.

I'm up!

Yes....of course, I've been up since a little before 8 a.m. but I've been busy-busy...got a haircut, talked on the phone for a couple of hours, went to Circuit City where I purchased a combined Sony VHS and DVD-Recorder, went to Trader Joe's and stocked upon all sorts of stuff I've no business eating, much less stocking up on...stuff like chili lime cashews, large salted cashees, chili-lemon pistachios, etc., etc.  I got some "daffydills" to brighten up my life, and some peppermint tea for the calm moments of my life...and some frozen potstickers and small pizzas.

Traffic was horrendous/atrocious at BEST...every year, we seem to be more people with the same amount of roadway...and vying for the same number of parking spaces.

Sigh.

I've got a new toy, and now I must go and play with it.

Tom, no eclairs, but we did just have some raspberry tea and pumpkin raisin bread with whipped cream and sliced strawberries. It's the same pumpkin raisin bread (not the exact loaf) we served to Rodzinski and TPunk when they were here. I get it at the Greenmarket. It's made by a local baker who sells his goods on Wednesday and Saturday.

I added a couple of things to it (tuna glop) as well. I added some green beans from the market and some sliced mushrooms. I used cream of mushroom soup so it was heavy on the mushrooms. I also put in some leftover rice. It's so easy and fast and you can make it according to any taste. I'll probably make it again before the winter is over. It's just tuna casserole with a funny name :-)

I had an evening of mystery. I started off with 4:50 FROM PADDINGTON, another Miss Marple mystery starring Joan Hickson. I haven't watched this one as often as I've seen NEMESIS, AT BERTRAM'S HOTEL, or THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY, but it's as entertaining as any of them. Just love the adversarial relationship they have in these between Miss Marple and Inspector Slack (what an apt name for him!).

Next up was SUPERNATURAL which, for a change, had NOTHING to do with the supernatural but rather a demented family capturing people in order to hunt them (yes, a direct steal from the short story and subsequent film THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME).

My local WB affiliate recorded the Tuesday night broadcast for showing tonight. I'm grateful to have seen it, of course, but their recording was in standard definition (always a letdown), and many of the network promos were for shows that have already aired between Tuesday and tonight. I guess they are legally obligated to show them regardless of their uselessness now.

I don't really understand why these local stations don't have the capability to record high definition shows in high definition. I mean, my DVR records shows in high definition, and surely the stations have equipment much more sophisticated than the DVR built into my cable box. If they don't, it's time to upgrade.

Well, Helen's the right age and the right type for Miss Marple, but she didn't attempt much of a British accent in her two Marple films, and she didn't have the terrific scripts (very true to the books) that Hickson enjoyed. The CBS/Hayes Marple films didn't have the luxury of running time that Hickson's Marple films - spread over two or three one hour installments -enjoyed either.

But I don't know where we were. Somewhere near Oyster Bay, I think. We got some picture frames.

DR Cillaliz - It's very hard to temper the spicy-heat of chiles in chili by adding something to it.  However, you can temper the heat by serving it with something - preferably a dairy product: cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc.  -Or even a glass of milk (or vanilla milkshake) for your beverage.

Some people try to "distract" the heat by adding other spices such as cinnamon, cocoa, oregano... or even a spoonful of sugar.

Some "heat" will dissipate if you let it sit, but sometimes, the heat level can actually get stronger depending on the chiles.

Now... If you've made a chili with beans, you could just add another can of beans.  And add some more meat too.  In other words, just double the batch after the fact.  ;)

Oh, and serving the chili over rice and/or with corn bread will help too.

Since I've only met one Dakota person before and that was years ago, I have some questions maybe you can answer.

I notice N. Dakota sort of is lumped in often with Minnesota, as above. Why Minnesota and not South Dakota?

Are there climate differences between the two Dakotas?

Are there "personality" differences between the two states? One more conservative or one more friendly, etc?

Is there a rivalry between North and South Dakotans?

I ask because the two states are mysterious to me. I don't hear alot about them. Most of the time, if you hear anything about them they are mentioned as a pair, like there is no difference between them.

I will now list everything I know about North and South Dakota:
Two states.
Fargo is the capital of N. Dakota.
Tom Brokaw is from one of the states.
Mount Rushmore is in one of them.
The Sioux Indians were/are there.
The Fighting Sioux of UND or NDSU have a good college hockey team.
NDSU has recently begun competing in Div. I basketball.
Pierre is the capital of S. Dakota. Or is it Bismarck? Maybe Bismarck is North and Fargo is not a capital?
Black Hills. There are Black Hills there.

That's all I have. Teach at your leisure and forgive my woeful ignorance.

The North Dakota Primer!!

To answer your first and thrid question

North Dakota primarily belongs in the Great Plains region of hte US and and there has some different cultural attributes. They tend to be more conservative, distrusting of the government (more a love-hate relationship), but freindly especially if you make an effort to understand them.  ND has a very small-town, rural mindset.  The only exception is Eastern ND, especially that area closest to the Red River of the North ( Yes, it flows north)  which is closer to the midwest mindset and language dialects.  In eastern ND we lump ND with MN but further wset they lump it with SD.... People in easter ND tend to identify more with MN. It is a typical for people here for we are a colony so to speak to larger cities. IT is very common mindset in the Plains. People out here tend to be suspicious of outsiders.... until they get to know you...

The Great Plains is known as the empty quarter, a place to get across.

Our favorite state to pick on in ND is Montana.... Man do I have Montana jokes. ..I also have Iowa ones....

In in Eastern ND we look at SD with curiousity for they are very much a Great Plains culture. Cilla is from Iowa and would be considered from the Midwest.  Also Eastern ND has a very strong Canadian influence for the Red River Valley was British territory until 1820. BTW, most history books doe not make reference to that.  Also it is not unusual for some in northern ND and MN to have dual citizenship wiht Canada or Canadian relations.  I, myself am more of a midwest mindset.

Both the Midwest and the Great plains have have political extremists such as Posse Comitatus and the NPL party.

North Dakota is the only State in the union with a state owned bank and elevator. The state operates and funds both entities. If you have ever seen Dakota Maid flour, that is from North dakota.  American Crystal Sugar is another product that is raised here. I grew up on a farm that raised sugar beets and it would be literally your head if you brought cane sugar into the house.

#2.... The plains has a continental type of wether. The RRV tends to be colder because we are in a valley and cold air settles....

SD tends to be a bit warmer due to Chinooks coming off of the Black Hills (Paha Sapa in the Siouan language)
#4 see my answer to Francois

THe Dakotas have always been lumped togehter.. As much as they are similar by both being agrarian states they are also dissimilar.

SD tends to identify more with Nebraska and ND economically, especially eastern ND with Minneapolis-St. Paul....

IF you visit the humour page taht i posted earlier, that are links on my old website for ND links.

I will now list everything I know about North and South Dakota:
Two states.
Fargo is the capital of N. Dakota.  LOL Fargo Wishes!! The capitol is Bismarck BTW, the movie FArgo was filmed in Brainerd, MN
Tom Brokaw is from one of the states. He is from Yankton, SD
Mount Rushmore is in one of them. SD
The Sioux Indians were/are there.  Correction they are called Dakota and they are in both states
The Fighting Sioux UND have a good college hockey team.
NDSU has recently begun competing in Div. I basketball. Yes and they beat Wisconsin!!
Pierre is the capital of S. Dakota.
Black Hills. There are Black Hills there.  SD

Crepes are chilling with their buttercream layers, chocolate glaze is cooling.  In about 20 minutes, I'm going to glaze the pile of crepes.  This has been some undertaking, and the DP is just sitting there like so much fish like he's suppose to, but he doesn't miss a chance to be sure I'm cleaning up.  I like to have a great time creating in the kitchen, he doesn't always see it that way.

I have a feeling the finished product is not going to look at all like Martha's.  It certainly isn't as tall, and it looks a bit crooked.  Oh well, it's still a pile of crepes with buttercream and chocolate, what can go wrong?

Another thing about the Great Plains it is diverse in culture and ethnicity for it is something they maintained. ND has Germans from Russia, GErmans, Canadians  and Scandinavians.

WE also have jokes for a lot of things.... The ethnic jokes, espeically Norwegian ones, are rampant

MN has lots of Scandinavians and groups from the balkans. It ialso has one of hte largest populations in the midwest of Irish.

SD has Native American, Germans from Russians and Anglo-Americans aka YANKS!!!

Oddly MT has a large population of Confederate descendants....

BK, wonder what's gotten hold of the energy. Are the houses not lively enough, and the early-in-the-run giddiness is no longer around to carry the day?

Thanks a million, DakotaCelt. I could have done my own online research, but I wanted an insider's viewpoint. Hey, I kinda corrected myself on the Bismarck thing. You gotta give me a little credit for that!

British territory? That is interesting. Although the Brits did have Canada. You're right though. Not something you hear about.

You're welcome Rodz!!!

Yes, you do get credit for that....

Yes, Many of the Canadians that cmae down are descendants fo the Tories that went into Canada after the Revolution and migrated west. Some of my rellies came from Germany, settled in Dakota Territory and in the early 1900s some of htem moved in to Canada after Saskatchewan and Alberta were opened for settlement.

Maybe the building has bad karma??

Bea Arthur brought the bad karma, I bet.

The audiences have been terrific.  Part of the problem is the space itself, which is somewhat deceptive for the actors - they think they're having vocal energy but they're not.  It's not a huge deal, but, for example, when they're playing a scene upstage, or seated on the sofa, there are many times when they just start talking as if they were in a real living room, which doesn't work in this theater.  I've taken to calling those performances "the living room play".  I don't want them to overdo it, I just need the vocal energy up and not "whispery" because low vocal energy and "whispery" doesn't cut it in this space.  Matt is fairly consistent and fine, but if Tammy goes to the low vocal energy place then Matt has to adjust to it or he'll seem too big - for weeks I've been trying to get Tammy to be self-aware and realize when it's happening.  If she feels she's not at Matt's vocal level, she needs to make that adjustment immediately - she can't go on or he has to go DOWN to her energy, which isn't good.  Again, I don't think these are things the audiences really notice, but it does make a difference in how the show ultimately connects with the audience.

Funny you should mention that. I haven't been inside the actual studios, but today, one of TPunk's friends we drove to LI with, his dad is the prop manager for all the NY ABC soaps. If they need a lamp or whatever, or have to buy a prop they don't already have, this guy's dad picks it out.

Not that that helps you at all, but it's sorta interesting.

Yes and No....

I have been fascinated by them for years... I blame it on a professor I had for American Culture....

That is another topic of discussion... It is amazing how ignorant that many americans are of their own culture and its differences regionally...  Not all Americans but many are.

IT does make sense...

Antoehr thing Rodz, many parts of the plains have only gotten internet access in the last 5 years.

Ironically for all hte years I have roamed the net, I have only met three people from ND. Very odd....

They tend to pursue other interests than being on the net and being 'connected' in that way.

For me, it is way to explore for the internet is an equalizer in a way for those of with challenges such as hearing or sight.

I see so it's more about vocal control than performance energy.  It's a tough one. The space I've done most stuff in here is a terrible space, a big old ballroom basically that eats up sound, and I have to tell people, look, you have to be louder here than you want to be. And you get people who want to do nuanced performances, understandably, but the bottom line is, if nobody hears you, your performance doesn't mean anything.

THat makes perfect sense. I can hear well in some environments and in others I cannot hear. It is like the room has very bizarre acoustics...

For me, stores, espeically places like Target or grocery stores, are very difficult for me.

Thanks again for the lessons, DakotaCelt. There is indeed a lot of ignorance about different regions, and I've seen it in every region I've lived in. Places are rarely quite what you've been led to expect.

It being nigh 3 am. (And I learned this very week the origin of the word "nigh"), I shall now hit the hay.

I am not sure if Snelling's books will be available out east.

DR George - thank you for the info about the Scarlatti sacred CD.  I've tried to find it at the library where I work and the public library here where we live and through M. O. R .E . (a clunky online resource sharing initiative - Moving Ohio's Resources Everywhere), all to no avail.  Maybe I'll have to order it online.

Does your library have an Interlibrary Loan department that could request it from libraries around the country?  They might even get it from the library where I work!  Or I could make you a copy. (shhhhh...don't tell anyone! ;))

Oh yes, I am familiar with ILL....  NDSU is one of the biggest users of ILL on the academic front!

DR Matthew - You mean you didn't discretely cut a small notch in the edge of each crepe in order to line them up properly?  Also, a bamboo skewer helps - like when frosting a layer cake, just to keep the layers from "drifting" while applying the frosting.  -Find the center of each crepe by gently folding it in half and then half again - into fourths.  "X" marks the spot.  Then just center the crepe on the skewer...

;)

However, You can also just trim it to make it even... Then you can enjoy the "chef's treat".

:)

*Actually, I believe I got those helpful hints from one of Martha Stewart's books.  There's also a great chapter on constructing a Wedding Cake in "Baking with Julia" - and it's Martha Stewart who is the guest chef for that chapter.  Quite informative and tons of pictures.  -And one of my favorite and oft-used cookbooks.

And for the "illusion" - slightly sweetened, freshly whipped cream can cover - and forgive - a multitude of sins.

;D

States I Have Not Been To, by Rodzinski:
Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Minnesota.

Not certain about Missouri.

When I was on my one and only "bus and truck" tour - Anything Goes - in the span of just over two months we drove through all but five of the continental United States!  Across Texas three times!?!!?  UGH!  We started in Logan, UT, and ended in Red Bank, NJ.

The states we did not traverse were: Washington, Oregon, California, Florida and Maine.

Thankfully - and miraculously - all of us on the bus liked each other.

And we even drove through the Badlands... Parts of which reminded me of a Martian landscape... Very cool.

When did you come through ND?  I wonder if it was the tour that played in Fargo?
