Well, you've read the notes, the notes had hopes and dreams, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their hopes and dreams are that they actually will come home in 2010.

Good morning, all! Well, I woke up to find my beloved FINIAN'S RAINBOW is closing. I am a bit in shock, because things were clearly in motion yesterday whle I was at the theatre and nothing was said. I did have a brief discussion with Rob Berman over my disappointment over the grosses, but I suppose it wold have been a damper on Josh's debut and I'm glad that that wasn't the case.

So, whether or not this will be only only trip to Broadway is up in the air. There wasn't much coming in that I could use the FINIAN'S credit to go on to something else, and that's a pity. On the plus side, I made a lot of wonderful friends on the production, I wrote some lovely bits for the score and I wrote some funny ones: I still laugh at the "drunk" music and the audience does as well. Let's see what work comes down the pike and, during the wait, I have luckily other jobs to work on. And I can go to the stage door and watch a fantastic show a few more times before it vanishes.

BK, the book idea is fantastic. I am already excited about reading it.

Thanks for the travel vibes, Slingblade! I hope they work better this time! :-)

So far my flight is on time, so...

Our plan is that I fly in this afternoon and Greg flies in from his shoot to Newark and takes NJ transit to Penn Station, checks his bag at Amtrack where I'll meet him and then we hoof it up to Times Square and see if we can get anywhere in the vicinity of seeing the big ball drop. I may do a scouting mission before he gets here.

This is in a perfect world, but I've always wanted to be in Times Square once in my life for NYE and since I have to be there anyway...

Travel vibes for DR Edisaurus and Greg.

Times Square tonight may be very trying, but the same things that make it so will also make it an experience you will always treasure.  It's like a NY right of passage.

How long are you in NY?  If any HHW get togethers are planned, I want to join if scxhedule permits.

Really enjoyed reading the notes today and the year in recap for BK.

I like the idea for the new book!

As for the Promises recording, I think it's a great and worthy project -- my only concern would be the timing.  With a major Broadway revival coming this Spring, and given the announced casting of that revival, I wouldn't be surprised if a new recording with the revival cast ends up being in the works.  I'm not sure how that would impact sales for your potential project, BK.

Glad I bought snow boots!

Julie, our screening is on Sunday the 3rd...10 people crammed into a tiny conference room. And I leave the afternoon of 5th. I feel bad that I'm dragging Greg up there and we haven't had a chance to arrange to do anything but he's also been so swamped that we'll have to figure it out as we go. We would love to see any and all who have time for us, apart from the night of the 2nd and on the 3rd...

I'm up - the producer called and asked if we could meet at her place instead of Starbucks since it was freezing and rainy.  I said fine.  She said it was very close to the Starbucks near Ventura and Haskell and it is - if ten miles is close.

Then I looked out the window to see how hard it was raining.  The sky is blue and the sun is out, that's how hard it is raining.  However, it may be freezing out - that I have not ascertained yet.

Thursday morning greetings!  Richard and I were up and out early (for us) for me to have a fasting blood test, after which we went out for breakfast at Cracker Barrel and did some other errands.  We'll have our traditional New Year's Eve celebration - a movie and Chinese food - probably as a double-date with Rob and Mary Linda.  We'll all be home to watch DR Edi and her ever-lovin' Greg ring in 2010 on TV.

Personally, I think that it would help.  They could cross-promote...maybe.  And some collectors are completists!  Especially since both the previous CDs are out of print right now.  New fans would possibly want to have the original recording and if it's "fixed" in the right way, it could sell well. :)

Just my opinion.

Greetings from Toyland.

I had a stop to make at ABC studios so my plan was to bus to Lincoln Center, drop off the package, and transfer to a subway to Toyland. I stepped out of the apartment into a beautiful snowfall and waited 30 minutes and still no bus showed up. Thank you and screw you, Crooked Runners of the MTA! So a disgruntled lady waiting for a bus to an appointment and I took a taxi to Lincoln Center where she dropped me off on her way to her appointment. I was directed several times around the ABC complex till I found the right place to leave my package, stopped into Barnes & Noble to use the Men's Room and browse in Performing Arts before taking the subway to this lovely office. I have collected what I need and I am heading to a liquor store.

I spoke to Joshie; after the performance last night, the producers spoke to the cast and orchestra. We haveother projects and things to occupy our time and we're working on a singer/songwriter's club act that will happen in two weeks. Life does go on.

The original Promises will always be of interest to collectors - but the big complaint always is how pitchy the singing is from Mr. Orbach, and I'm just interested in finally setting that right, as well as releasing the original mix for the first time on CD, as well as doing a state of the art remix.

I don't think it was Orbach.  Could it have been Tony Roberts?

I don't know for absolute certain but it probably was. He did a tour and the London production as well as replacing Orbach (at some point) in the Broadway production. I saw Tony Roberts in the Broadway production in 1971

I placed a hold on my mail that began Dec. 15.  I instructed the Post Office to "hold" said mail until I came in to claim it, which I guessed would happen on Dec. 30.

So, yesterday I went to the annex where mail is held.   And they could find "nothing."  They said it was "obviously" out for delivery.

I came home...and waited....and waited.

Mail came and went.  I got nothing.

Today, same story.  Mail came, but I did get two things...the federal tax booklet and a catalog.

I have TONS of stuff "somewhere."  I called again.  They were apologetic but could find NOTHING.

They will get back to me after they speak with the carrier who serves my building.  "Perhaps" he might know where my mail is!!!!????!!!!

I am suppressing total fury.

This is most distressing news.  Broadway cannot afford to lose such a show.

I have pre-ordered the cast album.  I hope it doesn't get cancelled.

I have TONS of stuff "somewhere."  I called again.  They were apologetic but could find NOTHING.

They will get back to me after they speak with the carrier who serves my building.  "Perhaps" he might know where my mail is!!!!????!!!!

I am suppressing total fury.

Did you have it held through the USPS.com website? Then you'd have a printout of the details and dates. If not, where's the form you left with the PO? I understand how frustrating this can be.

When I got in from lunch, I did watch JENNIFER'S BODY. A teen comedy/horror movie about demon possession. I didn't find it nearly as entertaining as any weekly episode of SUPERNATURAL, but Diablo Cody had some of her patented smartass dialogue on display, and there was an interesting female-female dynamic that I would rather the film have explored sans the gore and violence.

I also had enough time to get through all of the bonus features: deleted scenes, gag reel, behind-the-scenes documentary, most of the usual stuff.

The people who own the apartment in the marina where I am lucky enough to be staying for a ridiculously low rent are back in town, so I'm at Rikki's - and said couple have invited me to partay with them and some assorted friends tonight on their 72-foot Italian wonder of a yacht. I've spent many a splendid afternoon and/or evening aboard this vessel - stem to stern the loveliest of lovely water crafts - glove leather upholstery, deep and soft white wool carpeting, granite countertops, gleaming woodwork, sparkling glass, and gorgeous artwork - some of it by our most gifted hostess, herself. It's pot luck, as usual - I'm bringing five really scrumptious cheeses and assorted fruits, including pineapple, three kinds of berries, grapes, and some hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries - white AND dark chocolate - some of them I did a tuxedo design - wish I could take a picture and show you - I'm so proud of them!!!

I'm starving, but have to wait till Mr. Handy Man returns from two short errands I had him do.  I had to put a new battery into the old motor car - the old battery, which was, I realized, over five years old, was shot from when I left the headlights on for an hour.  It never recovered.  So, my darling daughter gets an early birthday present of a brand new battery.

The meeting with the producer was interesting - she's a bit of a kookie gal, but has, I think, a good heart and knows the current world of TV.  We talked about a few things - she really loves the books and wants to protect them, and that I like.  She's very keen to sell them and has a ton of energy and passion for them, and she has my blessing.   She asked me about writers and actors I like.

OK.  Any chance of an HHW get together Mon evening Jan 4 for some dinner at a restaurant TBD?  Would that work for you and Greg, Amy?  Who else is interested?  Larry? Jose? FJL? Ben? DAW? Vixmom?  Who are our other NYers?

That would work for me---Greg, unfortuantely has to fly back on the 3rd. He has a shoot the next day. But I would love that! Anywhere is great with me!

Count me in as one who will start exercising again as of the new year.

I was biking every day for around a4 months. Then i got sick, and had no energy. So i have not done regular exercise in more than a month.

The weird part is that i feel like i've maybe lost weight since i stopped exercising. It doesn't make sense. Although i guess walking around the mall a lot could count as exercise.

Good Afternoon!

It's been an errand- and shopping-filled New Year's Eve afternoon here in Richmond. The rain stopped, but it's still quite gray/grey outside.  Steve and I made stops at my parents' house (they weren't home - ?), Bed Bath & Beyond (gotta love those 20%-off coupons!), Panera (for lunch), the bank, For the Love of Chocolate (more 1/2-price Christmas candies - I'm practically addicted to these "sugarplums" they have there), and, finally, Ukrop's for some foodstuffs for tonight.

Right now, Steve is prepping from turkey legs for baking, and I'm here on HHW.  -And I'll most likely take a nap before we head to the Carpenter Center later. I won tickets via Twitter to Jim Brickman's New Year's Eve concert here in Richmond, so... It should be a nice evening.  Since Carytown is not having their big public outdoor NYE's celebration this year - and since no other city organization picked up the ball - we'll probably just head back here after the concert, snack on some pimiento cheese and potato salad (both from Ukrop's), and watch the festivities in Times Square on TV.  -Which should look spectacular on Steve's new HD set. :)

We have been watching The Judy Garland Show in order over the past few weeks.  I think we are up to show #8 or 9.

Do you have the entire series? We have been trying to gather them together through various libraries but since they are out of print the entire collection is not easy to get. We have Volume from the Infinity re-release, which is different from the original Pioneer Arts release. It contains Count Basie and Liza Minnelli instead of Mickey Rooney and Liza Minnelli. We don't have Volume 2, which has the Lena Horne show. We have Volume 3 (the Christmas show) and Volumes 4-8 (Volume 6 is listed as the "Legends" show with clips instead of entire episodes). We don't have anything after that. The annoying thing about the initial release, IMHO, is they didn't release the "Volumes" in show order. They released them in the order in which they would sell best, I guess, so you can't get Volumes and get Show Order (except for the initial Pioneer Arts release which has the Mickey Rooney show which was Show Number 1 but they didn't use it as the first broadcast program). My head hurts! I just want all the Judy shows on DVD. I've seen them on Amazon (I believe) for a LOT of money (of course, they are out of print) but as much as I want them I'm not going to pay those prices. I look at Academy when I go but they rarely turn up.

We will be leaving for dinner soon. We are going to one of our favorite Chelsea locations, Lasagne, for an early NYE dinner and then a movie when we return home. We just don't know which movie yet.

DR edisaurus - Try to grab a spot in Times Square close to the subway train (station) you eventually want to get on to head back downtown.  The NYPD starts restricting access across the Square around 12:30 - "Please leave via the closest exit." Otherwise, you could be in for a good walk to get to the subway.  -Although, walking up and down 8th Avenue after midnight is great for people-watching too. :)

Stay safe and warm tonight.

I know what you mean.  One of the CDs that was stolen from my garage this summer (or whenever it actually happened ::)) was the original 1990 studio compilation, "Hey, Mr. Producer," the tribute to Cameron Mackintosh.  Either it's not available or it's extremely expensive (there was one on eBay for more than $150!)...I'm not paying that much to replace one item.  Anyway, I went to Amazon today and someone listed a copy with the correct picture (below) for only $20 + shipping!  Hoo and Ray!

Now, it just better actually be that actual item!

Now where was I?  Where was I? Oh, yes!...

There was a time when I could do just the same thing.  -And there was even a time when I could basically play and sing the whole score to Sunday in the Park with George from memory, by "heart".  -And that included all the various parts/lines in "Putting It Together".  Today... You'll be fine.

I'd suggest heading back down to Village to drop off Greg's back at your hotel.  Then take the 1, A/C/E, etc. train up to 50th or 59th (Columbus Circle).  Then just start walking down Broadway or Seventh Ave until you can't walk south anymore due to the crowds.  *That will also make sure you're on the right side of the Square to see the Ball drop.

*Last New Year's Eve, I attended a party on 50th Street and 9th Ave., and it was pretty easy to navigate down from 59th even at 11:00pm.

Thanks for the moving vibes.  Moving day isn't actually until Monday.  The carpet is looking good, but they had a lot to do when I left.  Since the whole carpet being done thing is up in the air, I decided to just wait until monday morning to move. I had hoped to get a lot done before then.  So today we packed up the whole office and then left for the holiday weekend. I have a lot of little things to do and may try to move as much as I can of the things that go to the office from the house myself, but I don't have to and if I don't feel like it I won't

I'm not going to the party tonight.  I just really want to spend a quiet night at home.  I called the host this morning and told him.  He said he completely understood, but some of my other friends seem to think I'm mad or something. I'm not, just need and want to stay home. So I am. :)

I thought they were rereleasing THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW DVDs.

Infinity has re-released Volume 1 but it's not the same as the original Pioneer Arts release and I haven't seen anything beyond Volume 1. I've been looking but all I see (and all we have) from Infinity is Volume 1

DR Ben, I just checked on Amazon and there is a Vol 2 from Infinity.  I just might order these myself along with THE MAMA CASS SHOW pilot http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002C7ELR2/ref=pd_luc_sim_01_03

Sometimes, BK, when I am reading your notes, I feel like you are writing them just for me.  I suppose that sounds really egotistical, but actually it is more of a nod to your writing style.  So many of your notes this year, especially the ones about your early career, were really knockouts.  So, I couldn't be happier about the announcement for book Number 10.  I can't wait to read every page.

I've been sitting around the house all morning singing (if one could call it that) the entire OCR of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC to myself without the benifit of playing the actual recording.  It's amazing that I know that thing inside and out the way I do.

Now where was I?  Where was I? Oh, yes!...

There was a time when I could do just the same thing.  -And there was even a time when I could basically play and sing the whole score to Sunday in the Park with George from memory, by "heart".  -And that included all the various parts/lines in "Putting It Together".  Today... Well... Not so much. I'm lucky if I can remember the opening measures of each song in those scores.

I never completely mastered SUNDAY--that score is tough, lyricly.

The original Promises will always be of interest to collectors - but the big complaint always is how pitchy the singing is from Mr. Orbach, and I'm just interested in finally setting that right, as well as releasing the original mix for the first time on CD, as well as doing a state of the art remix.

I recall seeing PROMISES, PROMISES at the Ahumnson Theater back in the late 1960s or early 70s (whenever the National Company came through Los Angeles), but I don't recall who played the lead.

I don't think it was Orbach.  Could it have been Tony Roberts?

Anybody know?

Anthony Roberts and Melissa Hart - 1970

The meeting with the producer was interesting - she's a bit of a kookie gal, but has, I think, a good heart and knows the current world of TV.  We talked about a few things - she really loves the books and wants to protect them, and that I like.  She's very keen to sell them and has a ton of energy and passion for them, and she has my blessing.   She asked me about writers and actors I like.

And you mentioned my name?

DR RLP--I can relate.  I travel a lot and never know what fun experience I'll have trying to get my held mail from the Post Office.  I usually state on the online form that I will pick up the mail, but sometimes it's delivered on the last day and the mail's all crammed into my mailbox.

About a 6 weeks ago, I had the mail held and was given only a few pieces of mail at the post office when I returned.  In the meantime, my friend wondered if I had gotten a gift card he had sent me.  So I went back to the post office to see if they had any more mail for me--the clerk checked and said there was nothing.

I took another trip a couple of weeks later.  When I went back to the post office, the clerk brought out the mail from the previous trip, including the piece with the gift card!  I know it had to have been there a while because there were magazines dated a few weeks earlier.

Another time I picked up the mail and discovered mail for about 6 other people mixed in with mine.

The other day I picked up my mail.  I was looking for a package from amazon.com, since I had received an email from them saying that the post office had tried to deliver it the week before, but there was no package in the pack of mail the clerk gave me.  I told the clerk that I was expecting a box and he went back to check.  While he was gone, I started looking through my mail and found the little yellow slip stating that there was a package for me.    The clerk came back with nothing--I gave him the yellow slip and he went to get the package from the other side of the building.

I could go on, but....

It's pot luck, as usual - I'm bringing five really scrumptious cheeses and assorted fruits, including pineapple, three kinds of berries, grapes, and some hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries - white AND dark chocolate - some of them I did a tuxedo design - wish I could take a picture and show you - I'm so proud of them!!!

sounds like a lovely evening.  i also wish you could take a picture.

fingers crossed you see the blue moon!

Although i guess walking around the mall a lot could count as exercise.

if you didn't gain fat & lost muscle you would weigh less.

Our partay will start very soon.  Mr. Handy Man has done his Handy Work, we've come up with a temporary solution for the car/garage issue that works very well, and he's going to find someone who can smooth down the concrete where concrete joins garage, which is where this is happening.  Meanwhile, the car's bottom is safe with our temporary solution.  He fixed one of the blinds, which had broken, completely rearranged one cupboard and one drawer, so that everything is findable and with easy access, and he once again rearranged the Kritzerland stock since we'd accumulated new boxes out there.  And now, we're all organized.

I saw the surgeon today & he is very pleased with the results, his handiwork & my progress.  The breaks are still healing & I need to  return in 6 weeks.

When I saw the ex-rays today I was surprised how much metal is in me.  I should have known it was more than just the ball of my shoulder; there is also a 4-6 inch metal anchor down my arm, inside the existing bone.  this is not my ex-ray, just an example:

TCB, Bye Bye Birdie is still running because it's part of Roundabout's subscription series and they have a built in audience. It's pretty much closing on schedule. They had announced an extension but it didn't sell well so when the leads didn't renew their contracts and they couldn't find any other big names to replace them they decided to close down. Subscription theatres like Roundabout and Manhattan Theatre Club, etc, have the luxury of not entirely depending on ticket sales at least for the scheduled part of the run. Even if a show is ripped to pieces, like Birdie, it will have a definite run and won't close days or weeks after opening.

Just meant that we don't see our HHW family enough even though we live in the same area and I hope it's not a year before I see Deb and Vix again.

Although i guess walking around the mall a lot could count as exercise.

if you didn't gain fat & lost muscle you would weigh less.

Maybe. It's just funny that when i was not trying to lose weight i lost more than when i was exercising so hard!

I want to start exercising again every day. I just don't know what to do. I'm not that crazy about doing it indoors. Although i have an exercise bike and a rebounder.

I could go swimming once a week. I just hate that i will have to wait at least 4 months to bike again. :(

I did buy a nice t-bone steak and some shrimp.  I will make a very nice dinner for the new year.

So you get the steak and the girls get the shrimp?
The girls don't like steak or shrimp.. They had their treats and Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance turkey and giblets.  they are both curled up sleeping. Boo, on my lap under a blanket, and Callie on a blanket on the floor

I'll have to record it, but I loved watching them together last year.

For me, it was the original Broadway version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor© Dreamcoat.  Weird, huh?

;)

I actually performed the entire score to "Joseph" by memory with my guitar for my classes as we were talking about biblical stories and musicals.  No rehearsal... just did it.  Very scary

I had a feeling that FINIAN'S was not going to have a long run, but I am still utterly disappointed in its closing notice, and I send love and regrets to DR Elmore.

But how can that gosh-awful BYE BYE BIRDIE still be going strong, while FINNIAN'S RAINBOW (with great reviews) is closing?

Just a little bit of star quality!

i know what you mean about exercising, it is especially difficult for me to get out in the cold wet weather we are having.  no one wants to go with me & i won't go alone.

Surprise - I'm back!  We saw Sherlock Holmes and I had a nice little nap in the middle of it.  Not really my kind of movie.  We ordered way too much food from Middletown's new Chinese restaurant and had a wonderful feast here at home.  This place opened not long ago and we've agreed that we need to patronize it often.  Now, I'm watching Live from Lincoln Center, Richard is watching a Midsommer Murder on his computer, and Rob and Mary Linda are watching Pride & Prejudice in the family room.  Aren't we a scintillating bunch?

I have the entire series bought in bits and pieces and some double dipping once the box came out with several episodes in it that had already been issued on single DVDs (two episodes per disc there).

I didn't care what it cost; I was going to have the entire series, and I've watched them all quite a few times. Growing up when it was on, my father HATED the adult Judy Garland, so the only way I could ever see the show was if we could get him to go to bed at 9 p.m. on Sunday night and not insist on seeing BONANZA. Some weeks it worked, and some weeks it didn't, so I never got to see the entire show in its original run. (I saw probably half of them.)

I watched BORN LOSERS while listening to the commentary of Tom Laughlin, Delores Taylor (Mrs. Laughlin), and son Frank.

The commentary was almost as creepy as the movie.  I skipped BILLY JACK, since I had seen that at the movies.....and moved on to the nearly 3 hour motion picture THE TRIAL OF BILLY JACK.

It will take me some time to recover.....Ms. Taylor's mealy mouthed stringy-haired portrayal of a bleeding heart liberal kept me from the last two BILLY JACK movies in the theaters....and boy.....she didn't get NO better.

I am looking forward in a few minutes to BILLY JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON.....

Things I learned from THE TRIAL OF BILLY JACK:

If you need money to build your own low power television station, you can raise it by having a USA wide marching band competition - the bands will come at their own expense, and you keep the gate!

If you are a member of the National Guard and are ordered to fire into the crowd of rioting peaceniks - and you do so without looking - you will kill a small boy with a hook hand who just learned to play the guitar and is holding a rabbit.

If you do not want the governor of your state to call out the troops, stop doing exposes on the conditions of state run hospitals and orphanages.

You inner spirit looks just like you except he wears Native American clothes and blue greasepaint from head to toe.

I saw it when it was originally broadcast on TCM, but it was nice to see again. There were so many great films that they only scratched the surface really in that special.

We will begin with Aries - March 21-April 19

A lot of last year's difficulties, if you think about it, boiled down to a lot of fiddly little details getting in the way of you realizing your dreams. Let's be honest about it, Aries: struggling with the small stuff just isn't your style. In the next year, you'll find that a lot of these pressures ease off, to the point where your biggest issue may be other people's ability to keep up with you!

The months surrounding your birthday will bring more than the usual amount of Spring Fever. You'll be facing an urge to bust loose from your limitations and, properly handled, that energy will push you to new highs as far as you General satisfaction with life. The summer will find you speaking your mind more with those who are closest to you. You may not have been shy about expressing yourself before, but it's as if you needed to find just the right words.

In the past, knowing what you want out of life and getting the co-operation of those closest to you haven't always gone hand in hand. That theme will carry on throughout much of the year, and will come to a peak again in December. At times there may be frustrations, but if you keep a level head, you'll probably find that those around you really are on your team, ultimately.

we won't see the blue moon tonight.  one clear night it was beautiful and it had a light blue tint to it which i found wonderful. :)

Ok, you and my mom both say it hsa a blue tint.  But it's only called a blue moon because it's the second full moon in a month.   Is it blue because of snow cover?  I'm very curious

Next comes Taurus - and you know who you are!  April 20-May 20.

Taurus always gets tagged with things like "pleasure-seeking" and "materialistic." That's probably unfair, in most cases. You're just as good at dishing out the pleasure as you are at seeking it, and who doesn't like a few nice things around? Sadly, there's been just too much struggle in your life the last couple of years when it comes to those two very important parts of your life. Thankfully, 2010 marks the end of that long uphill struggle. Your pleasurable pursuits have been a little more restricted than you'd like over the course of the last two years or so. That's over with now, so ... game on!

The big events this year will not so much be a matter of major happenings as they will be things that have been in the works and are slowly revealing themselves. In the last two years, you've put a lot of work into what makes you happy, while Saturn transited your solar Fifth House. Now that those pressures are finally being relieved, you'll find you are finally gaining traction. Certainly, your love life and your career will feel the difference, but beyond that you'll notice things going a lot better in other departments of your life. You may have already noticed some of these changes starting to kick in; the real results start happening around your birthday in 2010.

Next the lovely Gemini.  May 21-June 21.

Isn't it great being a Gemini? All that charm, that mental flexibility, that ability to see both sides of the issue ... you're the wonder of the zodiac. Take a bow. The problem with that is that both sides of the issue have been kind of a drag. Good news: that's all going to change in the next year!

Gemini is one of the few Sun signs that doesn't have an animal symbol, but this may be the year that all of that changes. In the past few years, with Pluto opposing your sign, you've been a little like a monkey, swinging from branch to branch trying desperately to keep one step ahead of the predators and keep yourself fed. With Pluto now moved on into Capricorn, a lot of the major partnership issues you've faced will be lightening up. You'll still retain the swing, but this year you're going to feel a lot more like a hummingbird: still mobile, still getting things done, but in a much more elegant manner.

Your renowned intellect has been strained the last couple of years, as it's been forced to find solutions to the many issues you've been dealt. In 2010, you'll finally be gaining some traction on your biggest challenges, and solutions will flow to you with ease.

Cancer.  June 22-July 22.

One thing that all Crabs (astrological Cancers or the seafood type of crab) know deep in their hearts is that someone, somewhere out there knows how great it would be to bust them wide open and eat them with melted butter. The big news for you this year, Cancer, is that Pluto has moved into your Seventh House, which rules marriage, partnerships and close relationships. This means that someone may very well be cracking your heart open in the next year.

Cancer has a bit of a reputation for enjoying doom and gloom. You don't. You just seem to get more than your fair share of it. It must be that thick shell of yours. Everyone assumes you can just take it.

The good news is that you earned that reputation because you can take it, and more. And often, your greatest moments come when you have overcome the greatest obstacles. Thankfully, the roadblocks you face in 2010 won't be that devastating, but they'll certainly give you an opportunity to shine. New support and new energy will be entering your life from unexpected and overlooked people and things, and you'll be able to soar above it all!

Let's roar for all the Leo members of HHW.  July 23-August 22.

Oh, big playful Leo -- how the last couple of years have been dramatic (and often less than kind) for you! There's little doubt that whatever you've gone through in the last year, the uppers have fueled your inherent charm and lovability, and the downers have gotten a little ignored. That's one of the problems with being a Leo: you can be so sunny that no one notices the rainy days. Mars in your sign this spring is going to give you newfound energy and motivation to really get things done your way, and the summer will bring new opportunities to express yourself.

The challenges will be slowly changing from big drama to smaller, more manageable issues. You've probably been too busy taking care of others to really take care of yourself lately, but 2010 marks a new direction in taking yourself seriously, and taking care of yourself with the due diligence and concern you usually reserve for others. Don't think of it as becoming inwardly-focused; think of it as doing the necessary maintenance on yourself so you can do a better job of letting your light shine for others.

Life is going to be taking a turn for the philosophical in the next year. All of the noise and confusion of the last year may have made you neglect your Higher Self; that too should be a part of your personal care regimen. This year is going to provide ample opportunities for you to get caught up on your spiritual homework. And, unlike regular homework, you'll probably feel like there's a point to doing it!

Here we are DR LAURA - for all us in the Virgo constellation - including myself and DR JOSE and many others.  August 23-Sept 22.

Whew! Feel that enormous burden sliding off of your shoulders, like you've been carrying around an overstuffed backpack for the last couple of years? That would be Saturn, planet of structures and limitation, moving out of your sign. Congratulations, first of all, on having simply made it through more or less in one piece. You passed through the fire and made it out the other side.

Now, what to do with that spiritual Medal of Honor you've earned? Well, for one thing, establish who it is you really are with both yourself and those around you. Your ability to quietly endure both the big and little outrages of life have served you well in the last couple of years, and many of those around you may have come to assume that either it wasn't as rough on you as it was, or that you are somehow made of steel. In fact, you may have come to the same conclusion yourself. Virgo has a reputation for being able to take care of others with the best of them -- but can you turn that same care and attention on yourself? That's the big question you'll be facing in 2010.

The good news (beyond simply less bad news) is that there will be all kinds of opportunities opening up for you in new directions as far as fun, recreation and romance. So take advantage of those whenever you can. You've earned it!

Lovely Libra.  September 23-October 22.

The symbol for Libra is Balance. In the next year, you'll find yourself doing even more balancing than usual; you're going to be pressed to decide if your internal sense of happiness should be the focus of life more than the outward signs of success. This may have been weighing heavily on your mind for the last several months, as far as work and the state of your love life. What you are likely to be weighing this year is a little more intangible (and a little more important) than those things. Specifically, in 2010 you'll find yourself weighing out the cost of the connections you've formed for yourself versus their actual value to you.

There's going to be a lot of pressure on you from within and without as to who you really are at heart and who you really are to those closest to you. This will be both in your personal life and at work. The natural Libra impulse is often to make peace with these kind of pressures, or negotiate your way around them. Your best bet in the next year though will be to recognize your own inherent value -- not just what you appear to be worth to others.

In the final analysis this is all good news, even if it's good news in disguise. No one is better than you at beautifying things or finding the inherent beauty in the mundane. Once you realize that you yourself are at least as shiny and pretty as any accessory -- in your heart and soul, where beauty really counts -- you'll have begun assembling a better You. Breathe through the difficult spots, and enjoy the results!

Scorpio.  September 23-October 21.

Scorpios have a certain reputation for taking things a little too seriously, and to some extent you've earned that. The next year is going to give you new opportunities to really express yourself in new ways, and to get results from all that Scorpionic intensity you've been carrying around all your life. On the one hand, there will be new pressures developing as far as a lot of long-standing issues that you've faced for a long time, and that have been building for the last few years. New channels of communication will be opening up for you, and new ways to express yourself.

There may be a sense of deep pressure building when it comes to how you live your life and deal with the Big Picture issues. The usual problems of day-to-day living -- paying the bills, dealing with relationships, making time for yourself -- may merely be the guise in which these issues present themselves. In fact, with Saturn transiting your Twelfth House of hidden issues, you may find yourself confronted with people and issues that are merely your own issues in disguise. Think of it as a psychodrama where those around you are merely playing out individual psychological factors within yourself.

The good news is that no other sign in the zodiac is better equipped to stare an issue in the eye and see it for what it really is than you. Over the years, you've developed the tools you'll need to not only make it through another year but to prosper in all the ways that really count.

Sagittarius.   November 22-December 21.

Did you just hear that gigantic cry of "hooray"? That was the sound of millions of Sagittarian lives getting better in 2010. Pluto has moved out of your sign, and Saturn has left Virgo (which wasn't doing you any favors either, as you may have noticed from the unusual pressures in your home life, and the difficulties you've had getting what you need to feel secure).

Of course, as much as you'd like all of life to match that happy, carefree streak you have, you know it doesn't always work out that way. The big pressures have just moved on and changed form. Fortunately, your reputation for being able to see the bright side of things will generally be justified by these new issues. There will be new challenges to your money supply and how you handle your money, and yet you'll also have new opportunities to correct problems in your material life, and maybe even prosper more than you ever have before.

Work is also going to present new roles and new opportunities, and will also give you chances to shine. And there will also be new demands from your friends and loved ones. But those same issues will help you sort out who is of real value to you, and what your real value is to them too. The hard work that you've sometimes had to put in during the last two years is going to start paying off for you. And for some of you, the rewards will be enormous. Can I hear a "hooray" out there?

Capricorn.  December 22 - January 19.

One of the things that never seems to come across in those generic descriptions of Capricorns is their inherent sweetness. You're every bit as kind and caring as anyone else (if not more so), but have a tendency to hide it behind a mask that downplays your vulnerability. Now that Pluto (the planet which is best at blowing things up) has moved into your sign, and Saturn has moved into your Tenth (the Work House).

Although this one-two punch might be too much for lesser souls to handle, you're well equipped with the tenacity to not only survive these circumstances, but in fact come out ahead on the deal. Think of these two planetary placements as bringing new ways to bring out your inner strength, without you having to lose that sweetness and kindness you've had all along.

Pluto has moved from the spooky funhouse of your Twelfth House into the light of day, figuratively speaking, in your First House. This means you'll be focusing on how you see the world, and how it sees you, in new and powerful ways. Think of it as an opportunity to evolve into a higher form of yourself.

Capricorn is actually ruled by Saturn, which not only represents difficulties and limitations (every planet has its bad side), but also represents the obstacles you have to overcome to get what you want out of life. In your Fourth House now, this means questions around your home life, and brings the chance to (literally) put your house in order. The next year's difficulties will mostly serve as an opportunity for everyone else to admire how well you overcame them. And you will!

Aquarius.  January 20 -February 18.

Aquarius often gets pegged as being a little too cerebral for its own good. But the truth is, that's where you do your best work. The next year is going to give you the opportunity to use those sharp mental powers to focus on what it is you really want out of life. Two eclipses fall in your Twelfth House, which will bring out your intuitive side, and give you a chance to see your life from a less-strictly-logical (yet no less valid) perspective. The additional information they give you about your life and your position in it will be your big chance to put things in order.

Saturn is also going to be bringing big changes as to your philosophical approach to life. What fundamental approaches to life have worked for you, and what haven't? You may have never stopped to ask that question, or known the benefits of finding the right answer to it. This year, those answers will come, and your life is likely to be a saner, better-adjusted place for it.

Of course, it's impossible to have a well-ordered world around you without having a few other people in it. The middle part of the year will see close friends and partners coming and going in your life, more so than you've seen in a long time. In part, this will be a reflection of the changes going on in your "higher mind." And again, the overall effect should be a positive one. It's your worldview, Aquarius -- make it the best you can!

And last but not least Pisces.  February 19-March 20.

Okay, pause for a moment and check your pulse. Still there? Good. That means you survived the last couple of years with both Saturn and Pluto in less-than-perfect places for you. And by "less than perfect," I mean "lousy." Good news! Both of astrology's heavyweights have moved on to more constructive places for you. Now is the time to take that famous Pisces sensitivity (still intact from the challenges of the last while) and put it to work making your life a happier and more comfortable place.

You'll be receiving a lot more attention from others in 2010: loved ones, family and co-workers will all be drawn to you at times like moths to a flame. And as a result of the last couple of years worth of hassle, you'll be a stronger person with better judgment, and much better able to handle the influx. Enjoy your new position at the center of your own social circle!

One more noteworthy change from the previous year: Jupiter will be in your sign for most of the year, giving you a newfound sense of optimism and happiness about things no matter how they turn out. You'll be feeling expansive, but be careful not to expand too much -- this transit also comes with a more than usual chance of weight gain. There will be a renewed emphasis on health, fitness and personal well-being in the spring -- take advantage of that. Then again, maybe you just deserve the break. What's a pound or to compared to real happiness?

We had a lovely dinner at Lasagne. I threw the diet out the window and had Chicken Cordon Bleu and Anthony had Fusili (sp) with chicken and shitake (sp) mushrooms and we split an Eggnog Gelato. Our favorite wait person took our order and we had a marvelous time.

We watched the Judy Garland Christmas Show and some of Little Dorrit but Anthony's mother called to say Happy New Year so we stopped watching. We can pick up again when it comes out on DVD (if it's not already out on DVD).

We are now just waiting for Midnight so we may retire. We have guests in the early afternoon, Amy and Greg and Dear Larry! Hoo and Ray. A great way to start 2010.

Goodnight and Happy New Year (45 minutes early)

Steve broke open some of the various foodstuffs he received in various Christmas baskets, so...

-Summer Sausage
-Asiago Cheese Spread (which isn't as bad as I thought it would be)
-Various "savory" crackers
-Honey-Mustard Pretel
-Utz "Pub Mix" - love those pumpernickel chips!

Plus some fresh fruit, pimiento cheese and assorted chocolates, cookies and sweets.

Steve is drinking wine, and I'm sipping some sparkling apple cider.

And that's the food report from Old Manchester Lofts in Richmond, VA.

Lucie Arnaz must keep Billy Jack away from anything political, even though he has been appointed by Governor Conrad Birdie....I mean Governor Dick Gautier to serve the last two months of the term of Lucie's late boss......of course first he had to pardon Billy Jack's past and restore ALL of his civil rights.

I got a padlock for the back gate - probably don't need it and haven't had one ever, but I've been meaning to and today I did.  There's a bolt on the door that no one can reach without literally climbing over the gate, which would be very difficult to do, but I just like the idea of a padlock.

I was watching the hi-def transfer of Anatomy Of A Murder - the DVD was open matte and therefore appalling - lovely to see it in its proper ratio, and while I'd imagine a Blu-Ray will be sharper, it looks pretty good.  And what a film - the kind we'll never see again, simply because we don't have those kinds of actors anymore, from the smallest to the largest parts, and because no film executive, director, or producer would have the nut clusters to hire someone like Duke Ellington to provide a score.  And they'd change everything, and they'd add droning, thumping music, and they'd make the script all Screenplay 101 and it would be pathetic.  Oh, for actors like James Stewart, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara, Lee Remick, Arthur O'Connell, Eve Arden, Murray Hamilton and on and on - in ONE movie.

Happy New Year!!!  We found each other at Penn Station after a few missteps, had no luck checking the bag so we finally made it up to 57th where we were finally allowed to cross to Broadway. At some point, barricades were lowered and the crowd rushed towards the ball. We got close enough to see the screen with the ball, and Greg recorded the sound of the crowd counting down and screaming in the New Year. Not many sound fx libraries have that, I bet! Then we headed north to catch the subway at Columbus Circle and watched fireworks shooting out of Central Park!

Now we're back home, resting our feet. Ouch!

Lucie is explaining to Jean how a bill becomes a law.

I think I learned that on Schoolhouse Rock.

Courtesy of Dave Frishberg, I might add.  Dave kindly consented to doing a bit of "Bill" at the concert I hosted a few weeks ago.

So, what foodstuffs is everyone eating, what will you be drinking, what are you wearing - you know, we need our visual aids.

We went to a local place called Budd Bay Cafe and I had the half-pound bacon cheddar cheeseburger (well done).  There was no quarter-pound option...it was too much (but very good).  No one brought a camera, so no pictures of the food.  Sorry.  Anyway, we didn't eat dessert there, we went to my sister's who made a chocolate chip-pumpkin cake.  That was actually very good.  While at my sister's, we watch Kathy Griffin with Anderson Cooper and thoroughly enjoyed them together.

And that's the New Year's Evening report from Tumwater, Washington. :)

Thanks...but what does it all mean??
