Well, you've read the notes, the notes were clear as a bell, clean as a whistle, and now it is time for you to post until the clear as a bell cows come whistling home.
-
Oh my what happened?
-
oh I posted first after BK... now that's a first!!!
-
I'm heading downstairs to bed now.
Good night!

And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to very occasional dear reader Sigerson Holmes.
-
All right, I'm going to try and get eight hours of blessed sleep so that I'm fresh as a daisy for a long rehearsal day.
-
Happy Happy Birthday, Dear DR Matt H.!!!!
-
Gee, MattH doesn't even hang around for his wishes.
No... he didn't "wait just a darned minute!"

Happy happy birthday to dear DR MattH and many happy reruns of the day.
-
Happiness of the day also to DR Joy.
In honor of your birthday, could you get your hubby to change his avatar and headshot to something that looks like his far-more-handsome in-person self?
-
Hmm...I meant that as a kvetch, but it came off as a compliment. Well, there you have it.
:)
-
I hope you had a very nice time at your dad's birthday celebration Mr FJL
-
I'm closing in on 8500. Does 8500 counts as any sort of milestone?
-
Michael S, congrats on your plateau.
-
Jane, my Dad says thanks for the birthday wishes.
-
And vixmom, thanks for the wishes to me about my dad's brithday. :)
-
I meant birthday. Brithday is a very different thing.
-
It's almost a whole page of me.
-
Not only a whole page o' me, but it's not even a current me.

Not only a whole page o' me, but it's not even a current me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR MATT H!!!!!!!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOY!!!!!
-
TCB?
-
I got Simpsonized but couldn't save it as a JPEG....oh well.
-
BK is being quite mysterious in the notes today...usually we get to hear who he sups with...today it's "My friend" Hmmmm very interesting indeed
-
Happiest of Hollywood Birthdays to DR MATTH!!
-
I got Simpsonized, but didn't want to register to save it
-
Happy Birthday to DR JOY.
-
Well it's tomorrow so I guess I should go to bed
Good night all
-
Thanks to Jane, Ginny and MBarnum (Mike) for the natal greetings.
DR ArnoldMBrockman, sorry I didn't see your question before now. The most "special" thing I did today was stay cool. Although TCB joked about the cool northwest, the mid-California weather was a bit on the non-breezy warm side. My condo heats up from about 4 p.m. to sunset with direct exposure to the setting sun. There is no cross-breeze. So, if the marine layer (fog) doesn't move in, along with Bay breezes, to cool things off, I swelter even though the temperature outside is in the low 60s or upper 50s.
So....fans and AC running and kicking back, intermingled with a small cookout on my balcony in the early evening, were all the "special" I could muster.
-
DR MBarnum: My belated expressions of relief that Freddy returned safe and sound. I know you were thrilled he came home. I was most relieved for both you and Freddy.

I'm gone 50 minutes and there's been NO ONE HERE?
It's only 11:13 p.m. on the West Coast!
And tomorrow is a holiday!

Oh, I do believe in fairies!
I do, I do, I do, I DO!
-
Good night, John Boy!
-
Et cetera, et cetera and so forth.
-
And since I don't wish to be remiss (oh, no! I don't wish to be remiss!), I will also keep in the spirit of Mr. BK's notes and exclaim:
[shadow=color,glow width,#characters wide] Happy Birthday,
Mr. High-Def! [/shadow]

I spy, DR Jose...possibly up for a glass of water? Or, possibly awakened by a roommate, a roommate's mating ritual, a phone call or just a lack of sleepiness.
-
It's just as likely he won't post, I suppose. Having said good night and all.
-
Then again, he might post.
Yes, he might post, after all.
And wouldn't that be the bees knees?
-
Good Morning!
DR Ron Pulliam - I just got in. -But I did just have a glass of water and half a still-warm-from-the-oven H&H bagel. :)
-
There, I posted.
-
But here I am, posting gratuitously (and where is Miss Karen when there is gratuitous posting being proliferous upon the site???) and nothing from DR Jose at all...nary a keystroke.
-
Gosh.
I feel so lucky.
-
Back from a seeing and hearing and experiencing Eldar down at The Blue Note. All I can really think of to say right now, "The kid can play!".
-And, man, is that understatement of the century.
-
We might even make it to page 3.
-
And now I believe I shall attempt to catch up on the posts from yesterday and today. So...
-
We might even make it to page 3.
Indeed we did. Indeed we did. :)

Umm...
-
Too bad DR dingpaw isn't up to enjoy this frenzy.
-
And you'd think DR TCB would still be alert/awake.
-
Of course, the Pacific Northwest most likely is a good place to turn in early.
-
Umm...
Well, I know, I know. I was typiing when you actually posted.
I took a chance and there it is.
I wasn't about to throw the post away while I double-checked to see if I'd gotten your attention.

Re: Katie Couric and work done.
Possibly, Mr. BK, poss-ib-lee!
She still looks Couricky to me....but she's got the taint of CBS upon her...that umpteen-million-dollar contract came with new groomers and image consultants.
Tweren't a thing wrong with the old Katie, let me say it.
But she totally looks different/out-of-place/wrong on the CBS Evening News.
Funny how those NBC Today folks seem to just wither away with moves to CBS. Bryant Gumble sure went nowhere fast. And Katie hasn't exactly vaulted CBS into contention for any prizes/audience shares with Evening News LIGHT!
What CBS needs is a new Walter Cronkite.
Hell! What any of them could use is the integrity of a Walter Cronkite.

I still miss Jane Pauley on NBC's Today Show.
-
And I miss Chet Huntley and David Brinkley.
-
I don't miss Dan Rather, though. Never thought he fit the chair.
-
I'm finally getting just a tad sleepy.
I thought about hitting the sack early tnight, but I couldn't get into it.
Tomorrow and Tuesday are the final two days of my five-day weekend.
The first three days are a blur. I feel a bit sad that I've nothing truly significant to show for them except that I enjoyed them.
-
I wonder how Fosca and Magnus are doing today.
-
And how, I wonder are everyone's pets faring in areas where the heat is significant this summer?
-
Where are the snows of yesteryear
When did that double chin appear?
-
Now I know all you folks are the right kind of parents
I'm gonna be perfectly frank
Would you like to know what kind of conversation goes on
While they're loafin' around that hall
They'll be tryin' out Bevo, tryin' out Cubebs
Tryin' out Tailor Mades like cigarette fiends
And braggin' all about how they're gonna
Cover up a tell-tale breath with Sen-Sen
One fine night they leave the pool hall
Headin' for the dance at the Arm'ry
Libertine men and scarlet women and ragtime
Shameless music that'll drag your son, your daughter
Into the arms of a jungle animal instinct massteria!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground, trouble!

Strange the verses that pop into one's head when one least expects them.

Hmm... Is DR Ron Pulliam asleep yet? ;)

I'm ready, I think, for bed.
Jose might have sparked a more prolific frenzy out of me.
But I frenzied along quite well.
Till later,.

-
OK. I'm all caught up, and now to see what I remember....
-
Hmm... Is DR Ron Pulliam asleep yet? ;)
You're back.
All caught up?
Any regrets?

BK - As for John's Pizza...
The seating policy - Well, you either like it, or you don't. So, if you choose not to dine there anymore, well, that's your choice. -However, that policy is really only enforced during the lunch and dinner rushes. -And I suspect that you would not be too pleased if someone was seated before you - someone who was waiting for a friend to show up - and who very well might still be waiting for the rest of their party to show up by the time you were seated. Or even finished your meal. I've seen that happen. To me. It's not a matter of making you feel rushed, it's a matter of the keeping the tables turned, and also insuring that people aren't "squatting". -And if someone in your party is running late, then it's that someone who is holding you up. Not the restaurant.
As for the pizza.... Yes, it's the thin-crust kind. Is THE BEST pizza in NYC? No. But it's very good. -The pizza down at the John's on Bleecker is also thin-crust, but I think it actually tastes better down there too. There's always a nice hint of char to their crusts down there.
However, if you want more substantial crust, I suggest you try Dean's Pizza up on 85th Street. DR elmore and I have commented about the place before. They do make the traditional thin-crust pie, but they also make "Grandma's Square Pie". It's not quite that inch-thick Sicilian style, but it's based on that model. The dough is allowed to rise a bit, and I'd say it's about 1/4-inch think. It has a great initial crunch, and then there's a nice soft layer of "bread". A very good pie.
Otherwise, maybe you're hankering for the "New York Style" that's sold by the various Ray's Pizzas dotting NYC. A decent slice.
-
BK and DR elmore - As for the "non-invite" to tonight's dinner and music, well... Yes, you can blame me. It all sort of came together as I was leaving for my matinee.
I had planned a few weeks ago to see Eldar, but I actually didn't make the reservations until this morning. -I was actually almost thinking of not going tonight, but, boy, am I glad I'm not regretting that possible decision.
As for the dinner... Well... I had a few "missions" to accomplish after the show - and, well, before the show too. Once I started getting things organized, I went ahead and called DR Cason to see what he was up to, and since his plans were not finalized per se, I asked him if he would help me out with my "missions". So, we started there.
My reservations for Eldar were only for two people. -Oh, and seeing Eldar was a belated birthday present to myself. I was hoping that DR Jason could come with me tonight, but since we had to be in line by 9:30 - first-come, first-served seating - I went ahead and asked if DR Cason would like to come along. Then after my "missions" were accomplished, we rang up BJ to see if he would like to join us for dinner. And that's how we ended up a John's Pizza. Too. ;)
*When were you there, BK? I'm guessing were there around 6:45-7:00? Is it possible that we dined in the same room, but not necessarily together?
In any case... That's my "excuse", so to speak.
-
And as for those "missions" - Well... I'm putting together a birthday present for a friend of mine back in Richmond. I noticed I still had a bunch of Opening Night Playbills from various shows that have opened this past season. So... I took one to A Chorus Line... Then I waited outside the stagedoor of Curtains - with DRs Jason and Cason... And, as luck would have it, Rupert Holmes was there today, so I was able to get his autograph too. I tried to get over to Mary Poppins too, but the gates were already packed up by the time we got over to 41st Street. They really must have gotten out of there fast today.
*Oh, and since I had already collected some autographs previously, coincidentally - and quite serendipitously - the Playbills I'm gathering together have all been signed by Tony nominees and/or winners. :)
-
DR MBarnum - Lovely pictures of your niece and nephew. And Freddy and Bosco, of course. :)
-
DR TCB - I hope by the time you're reading this that you have awoken with and in less pain. Get better, my friend.
-
bk - As for "who is this Eldar?" Well... I've mentioned him quite a few times over the past two weeks here on HHW, so...
-
Oh, DR Cason, BJ and I did like our pizza at John's earlier tonight. A "Margherita" with Pepperoni, Black Olives and Fresh Basil. YUMMERS! *And I still like John's house vinaigrette for their salads too.
-
DR Adrianni Patti - I hope your signed up with a Frequent Flyer program. Sounds like you could earn a free ticket by the time you complete your remaining round-trips from LA to NYC and back again.
-
DR Jane - Toast half of the almonds you're using. Yes, toasting helps bring out the almond essence, but I feel that it affects the final product too since the toasting also ends up affecting the natural oil in the almonds. -At least when it comes to making macaroons.
-
bk - So when were you at Virgin? We wandered through there too - after wandering through the monstrosity that is Toy'R'Us.
The spooky thing is is that I was actually looking at Mireille Matthieu CD too. However, it was filed in the Vocals section.
-
DR td - I think you meant to type "prostrate" not "prostate". Or maybe you didn't. ;D
-
DR Cillaliz - Well... Serendipity 3 was just a block away. A loooooong block away. ;)
-
DR Cillaliz - Maybe they used tinted grout.
-
TADA!
-
DR MattH - For some unknown reason, the one episode of "That Girl" that sticks in my head is the one where she goes to the automat, but since she's short on money, she improvises a bowl of tomato soup with cup of hot water and some ketchup. :)

So... Back to Eldar at The Blue Note earlier tonight.
Quite simply put... WOW!
As impressive as his playing and musicality is on disc, in person it is even moreso. Not only was I continually blown away at the velocity of his fingers, but I was also bowled over by the various colorings he worked out that Steinway. His rendition of "Besame Mucho" sounded like it was being played on a "cushion piano" - for lack of a better word for how to describe that sound.
He opened with "I Remember When" which also opens his latest CD, "re-imagination". He did have a synth sitting on top of the piano, as well as Rhodes unit hooked into a processor to his left, and he duplicated many of the colors and morphs of sound that are on the disc. Then came a totally re-worked and practically deconstructed version of "Sofly As In A Morning Sunrise". Again, a total WOW! Once the tune came into the focus after the initial improvisation, it all just fell into place. And, man, did it swing too! I particularly enjoyed how he treated the final cadence of the melody, making that the "home hook" for his rendition. The rest of set included a few more tunes from "re-imagination" as well as his previous CDs.
Now as for those hands... Vladimir Ashkenazy was praised for his very prodigious right-hand technique. -As was/is Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum(!). Clean, lightning fast playing. Never a note out of place. There were times tonight when I thought Eldar was playing with two right hands. There was some astonishing passage work in octaves between the two hands. Sometimes that took place on the Steinway. Sometimes his right hand was on the synth and his left was on the piano - or vice versa. Or his left hand was on the Rhodes to the left him while his right hand was on the piano. And still he managed some hard-to-believe unison playing. -And there was also one continuous trill that I swear lasted at least a minute long - if not longer - all the while playing melody and accents with his left - or right hand - with some interjections from the non-trilling fingers at the same time!
And I swear there were times when I thought I was finally hearing that fabled "Chopin rubato". Chopin was stated to have been able to playing an accompaniment figure in his left hand in a steady tempo, while "allowing" his right hand to play the melody freely above it. -Like a singer back-phrasing over a steady accompaniment of chords. There has always been a debate whether this is physically-mentally possible, and tonight I think I heard that it is.
What I found quite surprising was his stage manor - well, his stage voice. Not a trace of Russian in it. Very relaxed, very cool. And very mature for a 20-year old! -Then I remembered he has been in the States since he was nine.
Oh, and I have to mention the contributions and collaborations of his bass player, Earl Travis, and drummer, Terreon Gully. They were truly Eldar's "band mates" up on that stage. -And their featured solos were also quite impressive.
After the set, DR Cason and I headed upstairs. Well, that's where the bathrooms were, but I also wanted to see about getting an autograph. Or at least seeing and shaking those hands. Luckily, Eldar happened to come out of his dressing room, and he chatted with us for a bit. Young and modest. (And cute.) And I did get my CD signed. -And, thankfully, the one bit of Russian I do remember happened to apply as we were leaving: Spokoinoi Nochi, Good Night.
-
DR DERBRUCER - Do you ever read any good news? ;)
-
bk - As for your plans for Wednesday night... Milla's appearance will be at the B&N up by Lincoln Center. The Metropolitan Room is down in Chelsea, on 22nd between 5th and 6th.
The closest subway stop to the Metropolitan Room is the F at 23rd (you'd have to transfer from a D or V at 42nd or 34th). The B&N is right on the 1 Train, so... Plan your transfers accordingly. Or just take a taxi down to Chelsea.
The Metropolitan Room (http://metropolitanroom.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1)
*I like the space. It used to be a comedy club, but they've transformed into a nice intimate cabaret room. -And they serve pies and cakes from The Little Pie Shop too! :)
-
Oh, I might as finish the story as it were...
After heading up to Union Square to check out the Virgin Megastore there, and then finding that it closes at midnight - unlike it's Times Square counterpart which closes at 1:00am - we hopped on the N Train back up to 42nd Street. Once at 44th and Broadway, Cason headed back to his digs, and I just ended up walking up until I hit 79th Street - a.k.a. H&H Bagels.
I had wanted to pick up some sort of pastry for breakfast this morning since my roommate's brother and his wife are visiting this weekend. I stopped into some of the bakeries along the way - Hot & Crusty, EuroPan, The Bread Factory, even Starbucks - but no one had anything that looked particularly fresh (at 1:00 in the morning). So, since H&H bakes around the clock and is open 24 hours (I think), I stopped into there for a dozen assorted bagels and a tub of cream cheese. And since I got a dozen I got a 13th for free - an Everything bagel, which I just finished consuming and enjoying a few minutes ago. -And it really was still fresh-from-the-oven warm. Mmmmmm.
-
Well, that's enough about me and my adventures. For now. ;)
I guess I should get some sleep now. So...
Spokoinoi Nochi
-
Oh... Wait a minute... And it was a great pleasure finally meeting BJ tonight too. I look forward to seeing him and Cason and the rest of the gang in The Brain from Planet X. :)

DR DERBRUCER - Do you ever read any good news? ;)

The board moved - were some posts deleted?
-
I've heard of people hiring Eldar-care attorneys. Sounds like a rather limited field of specialization, though.
-
I'm up and shaved and will shower in a few moments.
I'm glad Cason got to have pizza after all. I was actually there pre- prime dinner hour, which is why the seating policy annoyed me so much - I got there about ten to five and most of the tables were sitting there empty. I had the Margherita, half with pepperoni, half with mushrooms.
I went to amazon and read about Eldar - mostly everyone likes him.
-
I have always liked Ann Curry on the NBC morning news. She has a pleasant voice and speaks slowly.
-
It is not yet 6 a.m. and is already 90f degrees.

And now, I am going to look for dragonflies.

All the folks at work Simpsonized themselves---I'll have to give it a try!
-
I like John's Pizza, too, and agree with DR Jose that the Bleeker Street pizza tastes better. But then you usually have to wait a lot longer for a table, too, even if your whole party IS there!
-
Is he an actor of some repute?
Not anymore. ;)

The "whole party" thing is common here in Atlanta, too, so I'm surprised that it isn't the norm in NY. I understand the thought behind it and it makes sense to me when there are a lot of people waiting. If there was no one waiting and a lot of empty tables, I would be annoyed if they didn't seat me. I have been seated at John's at non-busy times when I have been waiting for someone.

FONDEST FELICITATIONS FOR THE NATAL DAY OF
DEAR, DEAR READERS MATT H and JOY!
-
I have absolutely loved reading your review of Eldar, DR Jose! I've been reading it to Greg and we then discuss each point you made and try to imagine what it would sound like, especially the Chopin rubato. I love hearing a description from someone who actually totally gets what the player is doing, music-wise. I will definitely pick up some Eldar CD's ASAP!
-
Happy Birthday DR Joy.
-
OK---off to do more moving stuff!
We'll be putting the "Labor" in Labor Day!
(Love the cartoon, DR Flingwing!)
-
Spoo - I must have forgotten to log out this early am ... well, I'm baa-ck!
-
Thanks for the Eldar report, DR JOSE. I am looking forward to his CD arriving at my house this week.
-
I have always liked Ann Curry on the NBC morning news. She has a pleasant voice and speaks slowly.
Good call, DR Laura. Curry is my fav among the current females.
Anderson Cooper is my fav among the current males.

We are getting new anchors at WRTV next week....this is the former WFBM tv, at one time the station of Ms Frances Farmer.
During her time - more than 40 years ago....her program would end about 6 p.m. followed by the local news of 30 minutes and then Huntley-Brinkley (ironic since she dated Chet Huntley when they were in college) - and WFBM was the number one local news for decades....
Now they are in last place....and have been for a long time. They have local news from 5 p.m until 7 p.m. And there ain't that much news in Indiana.
AND with the new anchors coming on, they are going to have a 7 p.m. local newscast as well.....
We used to get news weather and sports in 30 minutes....
-
Precisely why we bought a house surrounded by a flood plain!
LOL!
( or buy one on the slope of an active volcano -- that might help cull out some neighbors, too.....)

And the word of the day is: LIPOGRAM!

Back at cha, DR ThongSong! (I figured it was either that or you fell back asleep at your key board or, like me, you had forgotten to log off, or you're just being kind to avoid admitting you were pretending not to see me...).
-
Gotta scram -- I must go labor over finishing touches to the set and props, then the final rehearsal tonight before press night tomorrow...
-
Today's mini-frenzies were brought to you by The Mr. P Post-Birthday Gift Brigade... (he was a little frenzied himself earlier-- must have been all that sugar from all that BD cake ....)
-
Jose
I'm sure you meant Eldar's Stage manner and not Manor. But I'm sure that he is a Lord of the Manor as far as the Piano is concerned, I am also looking forward to receiving his CD's from Amazon
-
Good morning, all! I slept late, and then the attorney for my dad's estate called with questions concerning the Macbeths, other debts owed to the estate, and an offer on my dad's property. I have some Toyland notes to look over today, and I'm still debating a trek to the office or not. Whether I go or not, I've been asked to burn a couple of CDs for Ron Raines, and I have that to do.
Mr Rodney Gilfry finally landed an apartment on Friday, and Carin hopes to move in tomorrow. I suspect that today they will be shopping for essential furniture. If the ove happens tomorrow, I hope to spend part of the day helping them.
DR vixmom, the book you asked me about was by Alison Weir: HENRY VIII: THE KING AND HIS COURT. I also enjoyed her books on Henry's children, his six wives, and Elizabeth I.[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Happy Birthday DR MATTH
Happy Birthday DR JOY
Happy Birthday very occasional DR SIGERSON HOLMES
-
Thank you so much for the birthday wishes (page 1) from DRs Cillaliz, FJL, Vixmom, Dear Reader Laura, and, of course, bk in the notes (which I didn't read until this morning).
Didn't mean to rush off last night, but when I left, it wasn't my birthday, and I wasn't even thinking about it (truthfully!).
-
Where did Henry go in my last post?
-
Many thanks for the grand birthday wishes (page two) from DRs Ron Pulliam and JRand! Much appreciated!
-
Thank you for the birthday wishes, DR Jose!
-
DR vixmom, the book you asked me about was by Alison Weir: HENRY VIII: THE KING AND HIS COURT. I also enjoyed her books on Henry's children, his six wives, and Elizabeth I.
I, too, can vouch for the works of Alison Weir; I got hooked when I read her THE PRINCES IN THE TOWER regarding the murders of Richard III's nephews - possibly by Uncle Richie himself.
-
Where did Henry go in my last post?
Perhaps he went to Hampton Court.
-
DR MattH - For some unknown reason, the one episode of "That Girl" that sticks in my head is the one where she goes to the automat, but since she's short on money, she improvises a bowl of tomato soup with cup of hot water and some ketchup. :)
Sounds like it would have been from one of the two earlier seasons. Haven't run across that one yet (though I have almost half of the episodes still to go).
Of course, I watched THAT GIRL during my high school and college years, but most of the episodes I'm watching now don't ring much of a bell. I did remember the New Year's episode where a quiet evening for the two of them became an impromptu party where she got so desperate to have appetizer that she was putting peanut butter on cornflakes and calling them "crispettes."
-
Thank you, DR Miss Karen, for the birthday wishes.
-
The episode of THAT GIRL I remember the most concerns Donald's pants that Ann Marie picked up from the dry cleaners for him. She hung them in her closet, her mother saw them, and assumed Don and Ann were living together.
Hilarity ensues.
-
I must say that Bernie Kopell was always a ZERO in my book, and when he started being featured as a "neighbor" in THAT GIRL, I stopped watchng.
-
DR MATT H.: WISHING YOU MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY!!!!!!

Thank you, so much, DR Singdaw, for that wonderful card. Cake and c. . . . well, we all get the idea. A PERFECT birthday gift.
-
Thanks you, DR Edisaurus, for the birthday wishes. Greatly appreciated.
-
Thanks to DRs Jennifer, Elmore, td, and Arnold for the sweet birthday wishes.
I only wish these darn birthdays didn't come around so often!

Wouldn't I just KILL to have something luxurious like that to sit in! That's what I call splurging on a birthday present!
-
I must have missed something-How do I get to the Simpson site?
-
At long last good morning!
I got a terrific birthday present - a cool morning (60), so naturaly I threw open the doors and windows and aired out the house. Within an hour, the temperature in the house had dropped four degrees. I'm sitting right now in front of an open window enjoying the first long morning of fresh air for well over a month. Sheer heaven on earht. I will be sorry to have to close everything back up early this afternoon.
-
I have more THAT GIRL, of course, today to continue watching and would love to finish with the set by the end of the evening.
For my birthday, I will watch a mystery or musical (my two favorite genres) of some kind, but I'm not sure which one I'll pick.
-
And, of course, tonight begins the season finale of THE CLOSER with the first of two parts. There's also a CLOSER rerun on at 8, but I didn't notice which episode TNT was rerunning.
-
I'm also going to bake myself a bundt cake today to note the special day. Last year, I baked myself a pan of brownies, and I loved that, but I'm more in the mood for cake this year.
-
I think I will wend my way to Toyland for a couple of hours and, if there's time, stop by the rehearsal and hand over some music to the MD.
-
DR Jose,
What a wonderful belated birthday gift you gave yourself! Sounds like you had a great time at the Eldar concert! And you got to meet him too! I will have to check him out on Amazon and give him a listen.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm happy to report that my new copy of Simone Dinnerstein's "Goldberg Variations" is skip-free! :) -And still quite a wondrous listen.
-
I'm heading downstairs now to start lunch preparation. I'm having barbecued chicken for my birthday meal.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!
-
And one more final word about Eldar... For now...
Before his set started, I commented to DR Cason - and even to some others I had talked to before - that going to hear him live was either going to truly inspire me or extremely depress me. -Heck, a friend of mine I gave the CD to said he had questioned what he had been doing with his talent for the past twenty years - and he's a great pianist too - after his initial listen. Yes, he sort of meant that in jest, but I had the same "kernel" of a reaction.
Well, last night, I was simply awed. That level of talent and musicality and musical invention is something you don't question. You just experience it. And I never got the impression that he was showing off with some of the faster and flashier runs. That was simply what he's able to do and does. Yes, there were moments where I found myself analyzing what he was doing - the succession of off-beats, the way he managed to make an odd-meter swing in a fast tempo, the interpolation of other tunes in his improvs, having one "feel" in his right hand and another "feel" in his left at the same time (that's just the schooled musician in me) - but then I just stopped thinking and Listened. That's what I found most refreshing about last night. It was just nice to sit back and listen and not be critical about it. As well as not wanting to be critical about it.
Even after the concert, Cason and I really couldn't put into words what we had just heard and experienced. It was what it was. And that was a good thing. A very good thing. -And even during our brief chat with him, all we could really say was that we enjoyed ourselves, and thought he did an awesome job. You can't really criticize - good or bad - what he did. At least we couldn't.
-
And Thanks to everyone for your comments on my comments about Eldar. :)
-
TOD:
Well, I don't really have any favorite news reporters or anchors, but I do have a true story. When I was in high school my friend Hedy and I went down to Newport Beach during Easter Week. It was quite the thing to do, though I didn't do many of those sorts of things. (I was either at the theatre or working to make moolah.) Hedy and I were at a friend's house, watching an old movie on TV one evening. There were four of us, and one or two people were drinking a beer. Pretty quiet. Someone came to the door, saying he was Bill Stout of CBS News and he wanted to film an Easter Week party. We explained that there was no party here--that was pretty obvious--and suggested another location. But he wanted to film OUR party. He gave one of the guys some cash to buy some beer, someone said OK, we'll give you a party. So Hedy and I dug through the trash--trash collection was the next day, so we had plenty to choose from--and filled dark-colored bottles with water. Someone else phoned some friends and told them to come over pronto, put on some music, and soon we had our "party".
I thought it was all a laugh, because it was so fake, but Hedy's aunt saw us on the 6 o'clock news and wasn't pleased. I didn't get into trouble, but it was a rude awakening to learn that someone so well-respected as this news anchor would do such a thing. And his viewers believed it! I never expected it to actually go on the air!
I witnessed a second incident while in college at UCLA, where a story was reported on air--a riot--which I knew could not have happened at the time and place reported because I was there then and there was nothing! Needless to say, these two incidents stayed with me and colored my thinking about news reporting. I was quite accustomed to the fakery that takes place on movie sets--I never expected it on the news!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MATTH! My hi-def experience wouldn't have been the same without you. ;D
TOD: well I would be remiss of course if I didn't choose DS Betsy, who casted news ??? in several major markets around the US before she got out of broadcasting.

I must have missed something-How do I get to the Simpson site?
http://simpsonizeme.com/
;D
-
DR JRand57 - It took me a while to figure out how to save my Simpson-self in the proper format, but then, after a few tries, I believe I figured it out.
After clicking "Download", change the name of the file that is provided for your Simpson-self to something you like/can remember, and change the file extension to .jpg. That did the trick for me.

Just a few amazing quotes from the amazing PABLO PICASSO=
"I am always doing that which I can not do,in order that I may learn how to do it"
"Computers are useless. They only give you answers"
"When they tell me I'm too old to do something,I attempt it immediately"
" I do not seek. I find"
"My Mother said to me 'If you become a Soldier, you'll be a General. If you become a Monk you'll end up as The Pope.'
Instead,I became a Painter and wound up as PICASSO"

Back from a seeing and hearing and experiencing Eldar down at The Blue Note. All I can really think of to say right now, "The kid can play!".

Did you get a chance to meet him, Jose?

Can anyone tell me how to save my Great Grandpa Simpson as a jpg? When I right click on it, it and try to save it, it comes up as a pnp or bitmap.
-
DR Jane - Toast half of the almonds you're using. Yes, toasting helps bring out the almond essence, but I feel that it affects the final product too since the toasting also ends up affecting the natural oil in the almonds. -At least when it comes to making macaroons.
I was thinking about that. Have you made almond macaroons & done the half & half? I might test half a recipe with untoasted & then compare it to half toasted. Some recipes call for vanilla & some with vanilla & almond flavoring. I found this wonderful almond flavoring so I think I will use both.
The signed Playbills sounds like a very thought out & special gift for your friend.

Never mind, the Norwegian finally got it to work!

I have always liked Ann Curry on the NBC morning news. She has a pleasant voice and speaks slowly.
She is from Ashland. Keith was delighted one year to see her in our 4th of July parade.

Did you get a chance to meet him, Jose?
Keep reading, DR TCB.

And speaking of Ashland.... It turns out the Brain's own BJ is from Ashland, OR! And he mentioned last night he had some friends who had converted an old church(?) into a cool performing arts space downtown.

Well, I believe I'm going to head out and enjoy this beautiful Labor Day here in New York City.

DR Cillaliz - Well... Serendipity 3 was just a block away. A loooooong block away. ;)
A very, very, very long block! But the frozen hot chocolate was well worth the walk - can we go there again, DR Jose, huh, please? Oh, don't we owe DR Vixmom a trip there? Maybe that could be our treat with her and The Vixter after they see Starfighter on the 29th!

You can't scare us---that's already happened!

Everyone in the house is currently napping. Spent a fun afternoon at Playland, the local amusement park. I finally got my roller coast ride, DR Edisaurus! A modern metal thing where you ride lying down in a cage, in a "superman" stance. It was a blast!
Last night, while I walked the dog, the three keyboardists attempted some pieces for six hands [at one keyboard] in the living room. Hilarity ensued. :) Not quite Eldar, but entertaining, nonetheless.

Thanks, Jose, I appreciate it. Not feeling much better, which tends to make me grumpy - a bad combination.

It's possible, but I just converted it. I didn't do the actual Simpsonization. ;)

No, I don't think he did!

I read BK's notes, but I haven't caught up with many posts. :-\ I'm off to my sister's house to drill air holes in her (brand new) DVD/VHS/TV shelves because her brand new 46 inch flatscreen HD TV just barely fits in the shelf. There's not enough air circulation so we have to drill holes so that the TV doesn't overheat. Hope it works! ;D

Lovely photographs once again, DR DearReaderLaura!
I heard the most distressing thing today. Is it true that the typical lifespan of a butterfly is only a few days? It doesn't jibe with what I've heard about the migratory patterns of butterflies...
Not exactly. The entire lifespan of many species is a couple of months -- that includes egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. So the pretty flying things are, sadly, near the end of their lifespan. I think most of them live a couple of weeks as adults.
The monarch, however, usually has a similar lifespan -- they use their energy procreating. Then at the end of the "season," that generation ceases using energy on procreation and instead uses their energy migrating -- some to Mexico and some to California.
And that is all I know about butterflies.
-
Aren't you sorry you asked?

Good Afternoon!
Well... I'm about to leave the apartment in a bit... I just had to fold some laundry, tidy up my room, take a shower, etc. So...

bk - If you do want to give John's another try, they do have their "Bruschetta Style" pizza - that crust is a little thicker. At least I think they still have that option - although, I did notice that they had changed over their menu when we were there yesterday.

I was quite a fan of Peter Jennings. He went through his pompous period, but overall I thought he was an excellent journalist, which I think is probably the highest compliment you can give a TV anchor.
My other choices would have to be Huntley & Brinkley but, most of all, Frank Reynolds. I know I am dating myself, but hey I do that quite often.

DUMB POLITICAL STUNT OF THE MONTH:
ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,295555,00.html)
JOHN EDWARDS' UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PLAN WOULD MAKE REGULAR CHECKUPS MANDATORY
TIPTON, Iowa - — Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would require that Americans go to the doctor for preventive care.
"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."
He noted, for example, that women would be required to have regular mammograms in an effort to find and treat "the first trace of problem."
The government focing you to go to a docter and get nekid?
Women jailed for failing to get a mammogram?
This is a stance who's only consequence will be a long list of "Anybody But Edwards" voters.

The barbecued chicken turned out very tasty for my lunch. And the cake was especially delicious. I'm ashamed to say I had two piece and may have another tonight.
-
Though I had planned to temper the episodes with something else, I went ahead and spent all afternoon watching THAT GIRL. Among the episodes I watched were two of my favorites: the one where Ann gets trapped in a folding bed and the one that featured three members of her family: her sister Terre, her brother Tony, and her father who made a brief cameo at the end of the episode.
-
Listened to a couple more commentaries, and they were just as dull and near-silent as the one on the second disc. If she and Bill Persky want to watch the episodes, watch them on THEIR time and then spend OUR time commenting on the making of the episode. In one of the commentaries, she couldn't remember who was playing the man offering her a job - it was mcLean Stevenson.
-
I only have two more episodes to go, and I will be done with the box. One of those contains the last of the commentary tracks.
-
Oh, I looked up which CLOSER episode was being repeated tonight at 8: it's the murder of the female Homeland Security Agent (who had been having an affair with Chief Pope).

Which I'm glad I've seen. My 8PM is the new KYLE XY (and a 5 I get to see a re-reun of the episode I missed - hurray for marathons!)
I wonder if Brenda will drag out that damn white hat again at 9 :D

Well, I cleaned the dining room this morning, but I haven't checked in with Harry Potter today, so I'll head downstairs and do that next. Then back to finish up THAT GIRL and then something fun to watch until THE CLOSER comes on.

I know that Danise will be away from us for awhile, but I have got to ask: Has Danise seen the new Michael Ball photo???

Back from a nice rehearsal putting Rob Evan into all his scenes and musical numbers with Amy. Tomorrow we put him in the scenes with everyone else. He's really fast and he sings wonderfully, and he's going to be terrific in the part.

I have a feeling DW Joy is staying away from the computer today, but will surely enjoy your birthday wishes in the near future.
What I want to know is: Who told BK John’s was the best pizza? I’ve heard nobody say this since around 1979, when it appeared it Woody Allen’s Manhattan, and it was arguable (and argued) then. We like V & T’s, an old-fashioned place with unfriendly waiters in the same building where Gershwin wrote Rhapsody In Blue.
This post from BK got me thinking about tourist traps:
As to that restaurant practice, while I used to run into it occasionally, I haven't for years, and I still think it's stupid. I'm coming to dine and my party will follow shortly, so what's the difference whether they seat me? It makes no sense to me on any level. So, someone who gets there AFTER me gets seated BEFORE me just because they arrive together and one of them isn't off parking or something? Uh uh. The result? John's Pizza can do without my business, and let me tell you, they will find out that I'm not the only one who won't put up with it a second time. I've watched it happen and suddenly, six months later, the restaurant is magically seating people when they arrive, whether their party is complete or not.
John’s can do whatever it wants, without worrying about any repeat business, as long as tourists continue to believe it’s the must-have New York pizza experience. They can mistreat customers, even serve a bad-tasting pie; it doesn’t matter. The tourist, often, isn’t likely to return because there’s no return trip to New York for a long time, after which said mistreatment and bad pie is forgotten.
The Broadway theatre, being the draw it is, necessarily is just about the worst neighborhood for restaurants. With so many people, in New York just for vacation, looking to eat as near to Wicked or Phantom as possible, there’s a lot of restaurants who take their money with no particular motivation to do a good job. The further you get from the theatres, the better the eatery tends to be.
Off to birthday dinner at Carne now!
-
I'm having a couple of slices from my neighborhood pizza jernt, Fat Sal's. Excellent-tasting.
-
"...I'm broiling a steak..."
Well, 2 steaks actually for DH Richard and myself for dinner.
-
Bk - I just looked at the BRAIN CD booklet again, notably the inside-the-back-cover shot with Cason and the boys from the rear and bending over a bit - that's certainly a money shot for NYMF target audiences, as much as the I SEE LONDON show photo. Those boys got legs! And if the L.A. boys are a little skinny compared to the NYC boys, you couldn't tell from that photo. This might be useful for the interim until you get shots done of the NYC boys.

I like the way your mind works, DR FJL. ;)

Happy Birthday Matt H!
I just walked Alet through the blocking for the show so that she will be able to jump in to rehearsals when she arrives in NY.
Off to a Labor Day dinner with my mother :)

Off to a Labor Day dinner with my mother
I've just finished dinner with mine. :)
Barbecued ribs; marinated asparagus, roasted beets, Italian Wedding Soup and sushi (which Mum wasn't brave enough to try, though she did like the wasabi horseradish).

My couple of hours at Toyland stretched into seven! Although I missed a day of THE CLOSER marathon, I had a loverly time: a bit of work on the two Herbert shows and a bit of work on "The Brain"; I finished the new "All About Men," but I missed stopping by rehearsal.
Now I'm back, and I have a bit more reading tonight on critical notes to BABES IN TOYLAND before a Wednesday meeting to finish up (I hope!) editorial guidelines. My eyballs hurt at the moment so I believe I will lie down for a bit and give them a rest.
-
And in the "blame Jose" department; the guests at last night's dinner party, which I attended, were all encouraged to rush out and buy Eldar cds. Seven out of ten people wrote down the details, while one called me later to get those same details.
I spent a great deal of time at Sunday's dinner party singing the songs of the new cabaret, which I think I'm calling "An Alchemy in Time."
Most requested for encores were Johnny Mercer's "I Fought Every Step of the Way," David Friedman's "Trust the Wind" and Alan Menken's "Little Patch of Heaven."
-
Last night, I also watched a dvd of a film which I hadn't seen: David Fincher's ALIEN3. Not a great film by any means, though quite good to look at. This afternoon I watched the supplemental material and found that it was a wonder this film got made at all, and all my sympathies went to poor Mr. Fincher, who as the third director was working without a script, under constant studio scrutiny, forced to work with already built sets and creatures, yet still produce a film intended for a specific opening date.

Hello there, DR Singdaw! Are you ready to duet with me on "The Waters of March?" ;)
-
You're not doing "The Waters of March" as your encore? ;)
-
Hello there, DR Singdaw! Are you ready to duet with me on "The Waters of March?" ;)
Oh, I'm ready...and willin'...
But at this point, it's going to have to be a duet created in the studio, as I've yet to meet you!
-
You're not doing "The Waters of March" as your encore? ;)
Not if you're not singing it with me. :P
-
Glad that the dinner guests enjoyed your performance. It's always nice to get an extra chance to make sure you've gotten the material down.
-
Not if you're not singing it with me. :P
An interesting effect might be if we alternate every other word.

I'm pretty sure I couldn't keep a straight face.

elmore, did you get my call from the rehearsal hall? We redid the rideout of The Brain's Song so that it doesn't just stay on the F chord - it now has about seven chord changes around the same basic idea and bars, so you should be happy now.

My hearing is bad - did td say he wants to do it with singdaw on the waters of march?

LOL-I hadn't read the article, just saw the headline for this. I'm sure his heart is in the right place.
If you really want to debate this, ;) think about it. He has a point. If you are going to foot the bill for someone's health insurance, then you might want them to get checked & find major problems early on, and treat them while the expense to do so is relatively low instead of waiting. Hmm...if that were economic they why don't the insurance companies already do that. It seems I don't need anyone to debate this with, I can do it all by myself. ;D

TCB, I doubt Danise has seen the Michael Ball photo, why don’t you send it to her.
DR Laura, no camera. I jogged a little bit too, shouldn’t have stressed my, still, slightly sprained ankle but it felt good.
TD, you changed.:D What are you standing in front of?

We're STILL on page twelve?

Will we never get to page thirteen?

I watched the marvelous French short film La Jetee on TCM and am now watching the marvelous American but French-style film Point Blank with Lee Marvin.

I'm quite tired and will once again try to get a full eight hours of sleep, which I did last night.

And where is Thirteen? Those teenagers. Can't ever trust them.

I saw the documentary Broadway yesterday. i was disappointed with it. I was really looking forward to it and I wasn't that crazy about it. I think for me was the way it was edited.
However it was fun to see the NY critics together at a restaurant discussing the coming season. They came back to them every now and then. They were wrong what would be a hit, what would be a a bomb and who would win a Tony award. They also had an end of a season tally of what shows opened and closed. Also it wasn't until the end did I realize that there was wasn't a mention about The Boy From OZ. It wasn't until they announced the contenders for Best Musical that I realized that there wasn't a clip from the show.
Also why was Alan Cummings in it? He wasn't part of the Broadway season that year. (He was one of the producers maybe that's why.) But I did read somewhere that he was originally the narrtor but it was dropped.
-
Oh and one more thing.
BK was mentioned (sort of) They were talking about Stephen Schwartz (not glowingly) and one of the critics mentioned he was listening to the Stephen Schwartz Songbook CD which he really liked. It isn't the correct name of the cd, but of course I knew what he was talking about.

A very, very, very long block! But the frozen hot chocolate was well worth the walk - can we go there again, DR Jose, huh, please? Oh, don't we owe DR Vixmom a trip there? Maybe that could be our treat with her and The Vixter after they see Starfighter on the 29th!
I love you Ginny :-*
-
Methinks we need The BKMAN to unstick us.
Let's say Page One.
-
Page 13 here we come!!
-
I got up bright and early and took my car to get an oil change and inspection (it passed I am pleased to say... the 200,000 + miles didn't slow it down a bit!!)
-
Then I went back hpome colled the family and we went to IHOP for a Labor Day breakfast... they have a new special... crepes with a cream cheese filling and your choice of blueberry, apple cinnamon, strawberry or black cherry top....
absolutely delish and probably a weeks worth of calories to boot
-
Next we stopped at WizeEyes and picked up the Vixter's new glasses... and very spiffy she looks in her new purple wire frames too
-
Vixdad is suffering from a inner ear infectionand a bad cough so we dropped him back home for a nap and the Vixter and I carried on for more Back to School shopping... new sneakers...
-
Did you know that sneakers are called "pumps" in England? It caused no end of confusion 20 years ago when I was talking to my then soon-to- be-Sister-in-Law and bridesmaid when I told her that she need to get dyeable pumps which would be dyed to match her bridesmaid gown... she couldn't figure out why the Yank her brother was marrying would pair sneakers with Victorian style gowns
-
STILL on 12?!!!
I'm trying!! I 'm trying!!
-
Help me ArnoldBrockman I canna do it alone
-
oh. Maybe I can

Maybe Sam and I could join you. She loves the movie Serendipity, so how could she not love going there
-
Thank you, DR Adriana, for the birthday wishes. I appreciate them very much.
-
Today I skipped the big Labor Day picnic to paint the gazebo. I got the outside done before it got too hot. At least the outside is done, so from a curb appeal point of view it looks good. I still have to do the screens and the inside.
My neighbor came to look at my room and convinced me I should put up dry wall so it isn't so noisy in there. SO...I'm looking for a carpenter/drywaller who wants to do a small job. I'd like to get it done right away, but I have a feeling that it will be put on hold for awhile so I can save up some money. At least the demo is done and if it's going to be awhile, I'll still do some patching and sealing of the walls and floor so that everything is prepped for the carpenter.
-
I spent part of the afternoon catching up on this season's "The Closer" Not sure what I think about tonight's episode. It's such a format change for the show...not sure I like it. We'll have to see how it ends up.
-
Don't know if format is the right description, but it's more of a courtroom drama this way
-
Maybe Sam and I could join you. She loves the movie Serendipity, so how could she not love going there
The more the merrier!! When are you seeing the NYMF shows?
-
Don't know if anyone is watching Design Star. I totally expected what happened this time. I can't wait to see the next show. I think I'm going to vote on this one
-
Thanks for the comments on the photos, DR SINGDAW...
Art Carney? Why not?
Tonight the Doctor Sketch was a shambles. He picked up the speciman bottle about three pages early and nothing I could do could get him back where we should be.....or ahead to something else.
I should have just let the train head into the station...but..noooooooo...I had pick up the red lantern and back it up.......
-
The more the merrier!! When are you seeing the NYMF shows?
The Last Starfighter 8:00pm on the 28th (the day we get into town) and The Brain From Planet X on Sunday night with everyone else. We arrive early Friday afternoon and leave Monday morning. Saturday night we're seeing Legally Blonde. Sam wants to go sight seeing, but we have no definite plans
-
Is it Monday?
I just watched the ending of a Roman Polanski film I had never seen...Cul De Sac.....very interesting with the lovely Francoise Dorleac.
I think I will watch the listings to see when it's on again and catch it from the beginning.
-
If I win the Powerball this week, I will be in NYC for the NYMF.
-
We're STILL on page twelve?
We were but we aren't now.
-
Maybe my Eldar CD will come tomorrow.
-
Will we never get to page thirteen?
Certainly.
-
Cul-De-Sac is not my favorite Polanski, but, like all his films, it has wonderful stuff in it, especially Miss Dorleac, who died in an autmobile accident a couple of years later.
-
Will we never get to page fourteen?
-
I'll be posting the new notes in about twenty minutes.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I spent part of the afternoon catching up on this season's "The Closer" Not sure what I think about tonight's episode. It's such a format change for the show...not sure I like it. We'll have to see how it ends up.
It was a change in format, but I don't blame them for trying something different. No need to make the show too formuliac. I've noticed that this season, they've tried to get Brenda's confessions in places other than the inetrview rooms every week, too. I don't blame them for trying to keep things fresh.
And lots of other procedurals have done this same tack with a courtroom testimony with flashbacks to the investigation. CSI has done it a couple of times as has BONES.
-
I think I'll play some bossa nova to soothe my tired breast. Or is it my savage breast? Or is it my tired savage breast? Or is it my savage beast?
-
I gotta tell you.
Yes?
-
I talked about LA JETEE several weeks ago when I got the new Chris Marker set from Criterion, and this was one of the films contained in it. It is a marvelously inventive piece.
-
I watched the last two episodes of THAT GIRL - Season 3 to begin my evening. One contained the last of four commentaries in the set, and it was just as frustrating and uninformative as the other three. The episode in question was the one where a game of monopoly turned into World War III. Marlo and Bill laughed a lot during the episode, but they sure didn't talk much about making it.
-
Then, I began the first of four GREY'S ANATOMY, Season 3 episodes that I watched (and lauighed and cried through) this evening. Though I think the show developed problems in plotting later on during the season, the early episodes were certainly on par with the first two magnificent seasons.
-
The season premiere episode had commentary with kate Walsh and Chandra Wilson, so I've gone back now to listen to it, but I only got about 10 minutes in, so I'll finish it tomorrow.
-
I enjoyed THE CLOSER very much tonight, but naturally there's that frustration level when a storyline is continued, so now we'll be greatly anticipating the conclusion next week.
Big revelation about Fritz which hasn't been dealt with at all, so that's all to come next week. Can't wait!
-
Page Fourteen Harry and Ron Dance!!!
-
I've got a bit of writing to do and then will head downstairs to go to bed.
Good night!
-
Ok, I figured out the simpsonizing thing here you go....
-
Jose and I seem to have the same kitchen!
-
OH TOD.... I like Keith Olbermann
-
New notes are posted.
-
Teeth are brushed.
-
People just sit here like so much fish and can't make the three posts to take us to 400 - have I got that right?
-
I guess I've got that right.
-
I guess I'll have to do it.
-
If I win the Powerball Jack... I'll fly you in!! (and TCB too! any anyone else who wants to come )
Here I am about to buy my ticket at the local JiffyMart
