Holy Moley! 39 Pages?

Good morning, all!  It's either the headcold, or the stress of the past week, but I couldn't think of a single thing last night to add to the list.  I'm most jealous of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte Russe" because my goddaughter is Charlotte. She's never seen the film, but last year I gave her a copy of Christiane Noll singing the song on BK's "Jeepers Creepers" CD.

Today, errands: post office, bank.  I need to pack up a lot of accumulated things here and send them back to NYC this week.  I think I can return on Friday night.  We had a good meeting with the attorney, and Macbeth seems okay right now.  Of course, he has to go home and let Lady M revise his thinking!

TOD: last purchase, my nonregional DVD player.  I love it!

I have caught up! Oh, my, I go to bed at a respectable 9:45pm and wake up to this. Although I am surprised there were not more than 20 posts today.

I did think it would be a high posting day but you all surprised me with the number. Whatever will happen on Sunday (Oscar night). I won't be there for most of it (the Oscars and the posting) but I will read it all.

Our trips to Europe (England and Ireland) have been extravagant but worth every penny!

I'm a little embarrassed to mention this, because I had dissed the object on this very board a few weeks ago.  But I went and bought the DROWSY CHAPERONE cast recording LP that cost $50.  Not only did I buy one, I bought two, thinking that I could sell one and make a killing on eBay at some point since they were only supposed to print only 1000 copies.  However, I now see that even though Ghostlight has sold out of the original 1000, they are telling people on their website to send email and they will be notified when the LP is back in stock!  Grrrrrrrrrrr...

Bruce Davison was in the first film I ever worked on and he was one of the nicest actors I've ever met. I was just out of college, and he accompanied me to our student film festival.

He hurt himself on the first day of shooting, trying to jump on a moving train, but he didn't let that slow him down. He would bring his guitar to the set sometimes and serenade us with silly songs like "Row, Row, Row". I'm glad he's had such a successful career.

I went and bought the DROWSY CHAPERONE cast recording LP that cost $50.

My editing partner here just saw that up in NY and absolutely loved it. He made me wish I had gone to that instead of the Tony Shalhoub play. I liked that very much. but how often do I get the change to see a Broadway musical!

I may try to get tickets for that and CURTAINS when we come up to NY for our (now rescheduled) NY premiere on March 30th.

The most extravagant thing I've done was almost 2 years ago---buying tickets for my mom, her BF, my DH and I to go on a 2 week tour of Ireland with The Dady Brothers. (My best friend went, too. )The Dadys are Americans who play Irish music---phenomenal musicians---and they play almost every night in different clubs or in the hotels. Local musicians show up and there are wonderful late-night jam sessions.

I planned a side trip after the tour to take my mom to the town and actual street where her ancestors had once lived. She loved seeing that. Mom did all our geneology research so it was the least I could do!

Most extravagant recent purchase was the Playstation 3. I don't play video games at all, but this has the built-in Blu-ray high definition disc player, and its price was less than half that of standard Blu-ray players with in some cases a more sophisticated video and audio circuitry, so I put in a bid on Ebay and got it for less than list price with shipping thrown in for free. I think I got a great deal, but it was still a major expense for December when all the other bills for Christmas were starting to come due.

However, it's been a revelation to watch some films that I enjoyed on standard definition really pop in HD.

I actually went ahead and picked that up last night at Virgin after I got out of the movies.  -Virgin seems to have a habit of putting some new releases out for sale before they're actual street date - at least when it comes to cast recordings.  *Although, since they were already selling the recording at the Barrymore...  I have a feeling that PS doesn't mind their recordings being sold as soon as they can (since the store (Virgin, at least) already has them in stock).

As for the pricing... I think part of it is due to the "limited appeal" of the OCR.  Another is the typically "generous" PS Classics packaging - slipcase, booklet (with notes, pictures and lyrics).  I also believe CD and DVD pricing just went up another tier, and quietly so.  I'm still amazed when I see sale prices of $16.99, $17.99?!?!?

It's priced $21.99 at Virgin.  Luckily(?), I had a $5.00 off V.I.P. Voucher, so...  -Although, I suspect that it will most likely be sale-priced as the week goes on - which is what they usually do with new releases lately.

If you like that disc, you might want to track down a copy of "Los Tangueros".  It's two-piano arrangements of a couple of Piazzolla tangos played by Emmanuel Ax and Pablo Ziegler.  Some fun, nimble and passionate playing.

Is the new COMPANY OCR a must have?  I have the OCR of course, and the "new" which I didn't care much for.  I guess listening to the OCR for 20 years kind of set those songs in my head a certain way.

It's definitely different.  I'd say listen to the clips on Amazon, iTunes, etc., and go from there.

Do you have the LuPone/Cerveris Sweeney Todd?  If you do, and you like it, then you should like this new Company.  However, if you didn't like it, well... Save your money.  *And it does use the same conceit/device/gimmick/call-it-what-you-will that the recent Sweeney used where the actors are their own orchestra.

*However, there are some nice bits of dialog included on the new disc, so...

-I mainly bought it since I have a couple of friends in the show.

An extravigant purchase may be the new cast recording of Company which is $16.99 on iTunes.  What's up with that??  Amazon has it listed on SALE for that much, and it's only a single disk.

I missed a lot of fun last night.

Given that it was all fun...and not a little bit of it really silly (which is fun unto itself)...I shall not be "catching up" beyond the 9 or 10 pages I've already read.

For some reason, being back at work is not conducive to appreciating "fun" in the strictest sense of that word.

TOD:

I'm a little embarrassed to mention this, because I had dissed the object on this very board a few weeks ago.  But I went and bought the DROWSY CHAPERONE cast recording LP that cost $50.  Not only did I buy one, I bought two, thinking that I could sell one and make a killing on eBay at some point since they were only supposed to print only 1000 copies.  However, I now see that even though Ghostlight has sold out of the original 1000, they are telling people on their website to send email and they will be notified when the LP is back in stock!  Grrrrrrrrrrr...

Oh, I forgot about that.  I got one also, #581/1000.  I scanned the cover of the album to make a booklet for the CD.  Here's what the album looks like:

If they do another run.  If they do, hopefully, they'll do something to it that makes it different from the original and less special like NOT having them numbered or including a CD copy.

Well, it wasn't last night, although we both did enjoy "Pan's Labyrinth".  And we'll both be enjoying and/or enduring the day-long AMC Oscar festival this Saturday - all five Best Film nominees back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back.  "Babel" starts at 11:00am, and the day finishes up with "Little Mary Sunshine" starting at 9:45pm.

-I had actually though the event would have been sold out by now, but it's not.  Unless the AMC Empire is going to see how many tickets it's sold for the event, and then juggle the theatre spaces (there are 25 in the complex) once they get the headcount.  We shall see.

But it should be a nice way to spend the day nonetheless.

Forgot to mention,

I did see Follies: the Concert this past weekend and it was very nicely done. They had several alums playing the roles and the students playing the flashbacks. The costume department did a beautiful job on the costumes especially on the Ziegfeld-follies type costumes.

Janet Dickinson and DC Anderson did a very good job as Sally and Buddy. They had a QnA session after the show and some of the actors discussed their roles and experiences.  DC Anderson had the most intersting tales. He has done some Broadway, off-Broadway, cabaret and touring work.  He invited people to visit his site and check out his work, www.dcanderson.net (http://www.dcanderson.net)

Janet commented on her role in the How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Finally ordered the lamp - I just missed the cutoff for it to be shipped today.  I wonder why I just missed the cutoff - it must be because they had me on hold first for fifteen minutes to speak to someone I didn't need to speak to, then on hold for an additional ten minutes.  That must be it.  In any case, the lamp will be here Friday.  I could have done Thursday but it would have cost another fifteen bucks and I can deal with the one extra day.  Lamps are not under my five year extended warranty, however.  Just what IS under my five year extended warranty is anyone's guess.

DR MBarnum:  Any TV set that requires a lamp will need to have the lamp replaced in time.  The best thing about this, though, is that the replacement lamp makes the TV "as new" all over again.  But if this seems too outre, just avoid LCD/DLP TVs.

Go plasma.  And pray the gas doesn't leak out.

Well, I certainly hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems the only downside of my new job is that I am scheduled to work on Friday night at 6:30, which provides a direct conflict of interest with our dear Brain release party...

You don't sound well. It looks like you are coming down with the flu. Maybe you shouldn't go to work. Take two cd release parties and call me in the morning.

I sure if you explain that the party for your recording debut is the same time as work. Perhaps they will let you come in late or leave early.

Perhaps bribe them with an autographed cd.

If they don't let you go they are

Just what IS under my five year extended warranty is anyone's guess.

Since you have a DLP, I'm guessing that the spinning color wheel inside as well as the mirrored microchip that the lamp shines on to produce pictures are both covered by your warranty.

STUDIO 60 came to a whimpering end (for the time being anyway) with some really atrociously lazy writing. Harriet's director friend turns into a jerk before her eyes, and she breaks up with him and goes back to Matt. Huh? Where did the director Tim's jerky attitude come from all of a sudden? We've never had ANY indication that he could be such a prick. And he was right: Harriet had had the script for months. Her having problems with scenes in the middle of shooting was astoundingly unprofessional. Again, not any kind of behavior we've ever seen from her. So why now? Because in order for her to go back to Matt, these things had to happen even if they didn't remain true to the characters as we know them. Bad.

The simulated baby storyline was very predictable and not funny.

And as I watched Matt wrestling with "Jason the Mason" as a comic idea, I thought it was obvious; a brick mason who acts as if his job were full of secret rituals, handshakes, a la the freemasons.

Ended the afternoon with MONSTER HOUSE on Blu-ray. Motion capture was used to do this clever animated film, the same process used with THE POLAR EXPRESS a few years ago.

In HD, the animation was astounding (all three animated films I've seen on Blu-ray - CORPSE BRIDE, OPEN SEASON, and now this - have been visceral experiences). The Dolby Digital 5.1 track shook the house.

I thought it was perhaps ten minutes too long, and the boys as drawn seemed a bit young to be mooning over girls. Still, it had some wonderful humor and the animation was tops.

In a thread at Film Score Monthly Messageboard, the subject is about a new CD being announced tonight by Intrada as part of its "Excalibur Series" (i.e., a rerecording of a classic movie score).

The talk is all about Miklos Rozsa and "El Cid" and how one person hopes it is and how another person also hopes it is, ad infinitum, along with a post or two about how it won't be "El Cid" because someone else has announced plans to record it, etc.

"El Cid" is a GREAT movie score.  It's my personal favorite Rozsa score.  But....I have enough of "El Cid" to appease my taste, especially since every bit of material others have recorded from the score fall far too short of the brilliance of Rozsa's own recording of it on the movie tracks (tracks which are, regrettably, lost).  A so-called "faithful" re-recording was done a number of years ago...and it's DREADFUL.

So....I joined in the discussion and voice my hope that the new title would be anything OTHER than another Rozsa re-recording.  Primarily, it's because I have virtually every great score he wrote represented on CD and LP...and because I don't really want another recording of something well-represented in my collection.

I just said I hoped it would be something by someone else because there are far too many great scores not represented by any recordings that ought to be done.

Well....you'd think the mob was looking for me with torches and a rope to fling over the highest branch of yon olde oak tree.

Why did I have to be so negative?  How can I call myself a fan of Rozsa and say such a thing?  How can I say I love that score above all Rozsa scores and NOT want another recording?

F**K me to tears!

With DR Elmore busy with the MacBeth's, I'm sure we can all appreciate the need to step in now and again, as did JRand in his post above.

However, to answer the question, I believe it depends upon the DVD.  If you have a good quality DVD, you will see it as you've never seen it before on a plasma or LCD or DLP TV.  If it's an HD DVD, but you don't have an HD DVD player, it will, I presume, still give you a digital picture, which is by far better than the traditional analogue.

Someone here might want to tweak this response, though.

Good Afternoon!

Well, I wandered and wandered for a bit this afternoon...

I took the C Train down to 86th... Then walked over to Columbus Ave... Then down the east side of the street to 74th... Then almost to Amsterdam where I descended the steps into Levain Bakery (http://www.levainbakery.com/) where I purchased two cookies(!) (Oatmeal Raisin and Chocolate Chip-Walnut) and a Sourdough Valrhona Chocolate Roll... Then I headed up to 75th... Back over to Columbus where I continued to walk back uptown, but this time on the west side of the street...  Once I got to 110th, I took a left and headed over to Broadway... Then up to 116th to take the 1 Train back up to 145th... But since they were having signal problems - the train sat there for almost ten minutes - I went ahead and headed back above ground and continued walking up Broadway... Then it was a right turn on 125th, and I finally hopped on the D Train at St. Nicholas Ave back up to 145th.

Whew!

Now back to those cookies at (http://www.levainbakery.com/images/bigcookie.gif)
Levain (http://www.levainbakery.com/)...

SOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!

I was originally planning to ration them throughout my walk and the rest of the evening since they are quite substantial - at least 6 oz. each.  Well... By the time I had reached 110th, they were sweet history.  As was the Sourdough Valrhona Roll.

Hey, it's Fat Tuesday, ain't it?

DR Jennifer - I did see your question... I just never got around to responding to it - I was sidetracked by the foodie movie titles...  In any case...

As I mentioned previously, the show has truly become a joke here in NYC among some of those "in the biz".  The process that the producers/creators of "G:YTOTIW" have chosen to take is such a bastardization of the real process that no one is taking it seriously.  And what little credibility they had left was flushed down the proverbial toilet when they brought back Ashley and Matt...  And then proceeded to ask them to leave in the next episode.  It feels as if they did that in order to pad the number of episodes.

Yes, there is still some truth to maxim, "There is no such thing as bad publicity," but I have a sense that some of these contestants will have an uphill battle ahead of them once the show runs its course.  I mean, would you really want to advertise that your show is featuring a former contestant from "Grease..."?  -Especially one that was voted off early in the game?  And if they do go in for another show, and the people behind the table know that they were on "Grease..." and got kicked off early in the game, they're really going to have to have an outstanding audition.

I truly do wish the best for both Jason and Juliana - and maybe even Ashley and Matt.  However, I've always gotten the impression - and BK may be able to support of deny this - that Juliana has always wanted to pursue a stage career, and not necessarily a TV and movie one.  -Heck, she moved from L.A. to NYC to do just that.

However, I do find it kind of interesting that Jason and Juliana got voted off so early considering the background and performing credits they already have on their resumes.  If anything, that is at least showing the public how even the most qualified person for the role, may not be the right person for the role.

...And don't get me started on the musical choices and arrangements and the production numbers... :-\

Strangely enough, I think the most honest comments we had were the ones on the face of Sir Andrew... which, at times, seemed to contradict the verbal comments he made a few moments later.  And I believe I noticed less camera time on the judges this week while the contestants were performing.

Finally, if the producers of "Grease..." had gone ahead and restricted the initial audition rounds to true amateurs - and not allow anyone with any previous professional stage or TV experience to audition - well, then maybe I'd "believe" the show a bit more.

I hope that answers your question.  To a degree at least.

Well, I guess I won't be doing any book writing today.  I have literally spent all day updating the Brain script - I thought I'd already done that but the stage direction is so different at times that I just decided to make it really reflect the show we actually staged.

I also drove to my little mini post office and the annoying woman who runs it wasn't there - yes, the mini post office was closed and won't reopen until tomorrow.  By that time, it was too late to avoid lines at the regular post office, so I'll ship this stuff out in the morning.

DR MBarnum, the film I just watched gave me several ideas on decorating the fire escape for your visit.

I learned to ice skate at a small rink in Palms.  I don’t remember the name of it.  I loved skating and wanted to be a professional skater.  I had lessons twice a week, a group lesson and a private one.  I probably went at least three times a week and loved it.  Once the rink closed my parents never took me skating again.

I went to the bank today to check out the current worth of this CD for $7300 we found in my dad's safety deposit box.  The bank can find nothing under the number, my dad's name, my name, or my social security number!  I'm wondering if he sent me this 10 years ago and I put it into my IRA?

I'm quite puzzled!

If the actual CD was in the safe deposit box I don't know how it could have been cashed. ???

I suspect that the people who were featured on the show will move through easily (the indian brother, sundance, the 4 guys i mentioned above.

People who were not featured (aj, nick ...) will be in a lot of trouble.

RE: STUDIO 60.

DR MattH, I've actually been really enjoying the show lately. Maybe it depends on whether you like matt and harriet.

I thought that it made perfect sense that luke (harriet's beau) was a jerk. They totally showed him being a jackass last week in the backstory episode.

I suppose it was unprofessional how harriet acted. But i think the point was that luke was acting like a jerk and only asking her do scenes to prove his control over things. And to make matt mad.

Also, i didn't get that harriet went back to matt.  She went back to the studio. And she agreed to help him through his writer's block. But i think things with them are totally up in the air, still.

I rewatched SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM tonight before the start of IDOL. Enjoyed Chad Allen's performance very much, especially his recollection of his Army lover. Beautiful, sad moment.

The note of melancholy that runs through much of this film is strong. Yet, there are enough light-hearted moments to take the edge off the nasty side of things.

Really good show.

As for IDOL, I thought this was BY FAR the weakest group of semifinalists they've EVER had. Until Blake sang (#7 in a group of 12), every singer was either flat, uninspired, or bland.

After Blake, we had the best vocals that were to be sung tonight (though none of them inspired me enough to cast a single vote). Chris S. had the best vocal of the night and Phil (man whose wife had the baby during auditions) showed he had power and control after a very shaky start.

But the rest - ugh! Boy band wannabees, amateurs in the worst sense of the word (no stage presence, no control over their volume, wretched overuse of falsetto).

Yesterday I had Tivo record THE HAWAIIANS from TCM which I watched tonight.  Except the recording ended before the movie had finished.  That's never happened to me before.  TCM is usually right on the money as far as their scheduling is concerned, but this time they dropped the ball.

Not that it's any great tragedy.  THE HAWAIIANS is a lousy movie with only one good performance (Tina Chen).  Charlton Heston sleepwalks through the entire film--if he ever showed more than two expressions during the whole thing I must have missed it.

DR MBarnum, to answer your question about DVDs and HDTVs.

The quality of the movie source you're feeding into the TV will either be complemented by its HDTV capabilities or betrayed by them if the source is less than sterling.

Videotape looks relatively poor on these sets because the resolution of a typical VHS tape is so low (280 scan lines). If a DVD has been produced from a low quality source (say a DVD from a videotape), it's not going to look any better than a videotape would look.

Analog TV signals have a similar problem. Digital sets and analog signals don't shake hands very well, so unless your TV has a very good scaler that can take the analog signal and process it to remove artifacts and clean up the lower resolution, it's never going to look as clean and crisp as the best DVDs (480 scan lines) or true HDTV signals (which can have up to 1,080 scan lines).

I've just found out that a record label has recorded the complete score to Miklos Rozsa's Spellbound (just how more complete it can be is anyone's guess - we had a rather marvelous recording conducted by Heindorf on Warner Bros. records and Stanyan CD).  I'm told they located a theremin for the recording.  I am dismayed that they didn't come to the preeminent West Coast theremin player, Dr. BK.

There used to be a coffee shop in Fargo called "Frisky Goat"

There is one in Moorhead called "Atomic Coffee"

Thanks MattH and RLP on the HDTV input.

My concern is that much of what I watch (ok, all of what I watch) is not HD and I don't want all of my favorite movies to look cruddy if I were to ever spring for a fancy television set.

Now plasma and HD are two different monsters, right? If I were to watch a regular, non HD DVD on a plasma tv would it look OK?

I spoke to Laurie Mitchell this evening and we have a date to meet at the next Ray Courts Celebrity show in Burbank which I think is in April. Woohoo!

I am alreayd deep in debt, so what the hay! You only live once!

BK, why don't you sign up for the April show and bring all of your celebrity friends! Sit next to Laurie and we will all have a party the live long day.

Maybe Earl Holliman will be there. that would be swell.

Well, I'll be darned...Ray Courts just today listed guests for the April show...and Kevin Spirtas is signed up...and Gigi Perreau! I can't wait to meet Gigi!

Hmmm....also Marcia Wallace and Seka...should be an interesting show.

There are plasma TVs that are not HDTV (they're called EDTVs), but for the difference in cost, it's not worth it. Generally speaking, most plasma sets you see now are HDTVs.

Again, DVDs come in all types of quality, DR MBarnum. Most commercial DVDs are going to look anywhere from OK to stupendous on an HDTV. But just because it's DVD doesn't mean it looks good, even on a regular analog TV. Many public domain movies and TV shows that look adequate on a regular TV are going to look pretty bad on a digital set. But that's because the quality of the DVD is poor. The TV is simply showing what's really there, so the poor picture isn't the set's fault; it's the fault of shoddy DVD processing and manufacturing.

I guess what I mean MattH, is that the DVD won't look worse on an HDTV then when I watch it on my regular tv.

Speaking of our CD release partay, perhaps the missing Miss Karen can talk some horse sense into her son - who simply MUST be at the partay.

"Yes!", your DVD can look WORSE on an HDTV if the DVD is of poor quality.  If it looks "archival" on your regular set, the movie's flaws are going to be amplified on an HDTV...not the HDTV's fault...but the poor quality of the DVD's fault.

DR MattH has occasionally commented on newly acquired DVDs in which he took exception to grain and dirt that he thought should have been eliminated.  I've gotten those same DVDs and seen none of those flaws on my 20-inch screen (old TV).

I'm certain I'm going to see them now, though.

If the DVD is of good quality, it will improve when watched on an HDTV.

I watched "American Idol"...and I can tell you without any hesitation that it's absolutely the worst show I've ever seen in this series.

The men were -- save three -- uniformly bland, unmemorable and totally wrongheaded about their approaches and deliveries of songs that were -- for the MOST part -- bland and unmemorable in their original versions.

Of the three that were all right, only one stood out....the last singer...Chris Stacey.  He's the only male vocalist I would bet on to make it well into the competition.

My hopes for the women are very high -- Lakisha and Melinda (Dolittle) are my favorites.

Dreadful, dreadful show.  If you thought "Grease" was terrible this past Sunday, it was leagues better than tonight's "Idol."

**And I have to say my saving grace is that each cookie is $3.50 - and well worth every penny - but they're definitely the type I would "casually" buy a dozen to take back to the apartment.  -Besides, that would be over five pounds(!) of cookies!

Did you mean to insert the word "not" between "definitely" and "the type"?

Somehow, I'm thinking you really WANT to "casually" buy a dozen -- of EACH -- to take back to your apartment.

I just got "Shock To the System (http://www.amazon.com/Shock-System-Chad-Allen/dp/B000K2V7EG/sr=8-1/qid=1172044432/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=dvd)" in the mail today!  I also got the first ever English language recording of Kurt Weill's Happy End (http://www.amazon.com/Happy-End-2006-ACT-Cast/dp/B000M06KFM/sr=1-1/qid=1172044206/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=music), as well as Scott Whitfield's "Speaking of Love (http://www.amazon.com/Speaking-Love-Scott-Whitfield/dp/B000KX0HMS/sr=1-1/qid=1172044251/ref=sr_1_1/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=music) (with special guest Cheryl Bentyne of The Manhattan Transfer...among others) and "Sweet Appreciation: Rusty Magee Live at the West Bank Cafe (http://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Appreciation-Rusty-Magee-Live/dp/B00009XEKY/sr=1-1/qid=1172044313/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=music)."

And now, I must leave.  I'm ushering for THIS (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=870) event.  It'll be interesting, to say the least. ::)

Yes, quite!  Let us know how it was received.

There were over 700 people in the audience!  There were three speakers (Elizabeth de la Vega, David Lindorff and Ray McGovern) who spoke for about a half hour each, then Washington State Senator Eric Oemig spoke about the memorium to impeach Bush and/or Cheney (I don't remember if it's specifically for one, the other or both).  Anyway, they made quite the arguments for impeachment and have certainly convinced me that they have credible arguments and evidence.  And there's a lot!  There are also several other states proposing similar proposals.  So, now we'll see what happens.
