Well, you've read the notes, the notes hammered home their points, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're disturbed by the words ball peen and are seeking therapy.

Yes, I have an Unseemly Trivia Question - undoubtedly it won't fool the likes of our dear readers, but here it is, nonetheless:

It was one of the most extraordinary theatrical seasons ever – producing classic plays and musicals.  In this season, no less than fourteen plays and musicals would eventually be turned into motion pictures.  And, one play was actually adapted from a novel which had, just a couple of years earlier, been turned into a hugely popular film, a film that was ultimately remade two times.  One of the remakes had a different title than the original film, and the other retained the title of the original film.  However, the title of the original novel was completely different to all the film versions, while the title of the play was completely different than all of the above.  Two other plays had incidental music by famous theater music composers.  Of the musicals, only one musical’s star would go on to repeat their performance in the film version.  One play with two high-wattage stars would come to the screen with two completely different high-wattage stars.

So – the following questions all have to do with plays and musicals turned into films:

Name the fourteen plays that became films.

Name the play adapted from a novel that had, just a couple of years earlier, been turned into a hugely popular film.  Name the original film, name the different title of one of its remakes, and name the novel’s title.

Name the two plays that had incidental music by two famous theater music composers and name the composers.

Name the musical and the star who was the only one that season to repeat their role in the film version.

Name the play with two high-wattage stars and name the two high-wattage stars who eventually did the film version.

Remember, do not post your answers to the site, send them to me at bruce@haineshisway.com.

Quote
TROUBLED BRIDGES

The Federal Highway Administration oversees the inspection of all of the country's 575,413 bridges, and it classifies almost 20 percent of them as "structurally deficient." A structurally deficient bridge is not necessarily in danger of imminent collapse; for example, the category includes many bridges that are still safe but have vehicle-weight restrictions.

More than 80 percent of all U.S. bridges are located east of the geographic midpoint between the coasts. The skewed distribution is due in part to the way the Midwest and Great Plains states were settled--in the so-called "township-and-range" pattern, which resulted in the laying down of land parcels and roadways in evenly spaced grids; in order to maintain this even spacing, many bridges had to be built over small waterways. Iowa, for example contains more bridges than Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming combined.

The fact that the nation's midsection has the highest concentration of bridges is closely related to why, as shown on the map above, a large percentage of the region's bridges are structurally deficient. Many of the country's bridges are owned by counties or other small jurisdictions; in the Midwest, where there are large numbers of rural counties with many bridges and few people, bridges have become a serious financial liability. Because the federal government does not normally fund preventive maintenance, these jurisdictions sometimes find it cost-effective to let their bridges deteriorate to levels at which they are eligible for federal repair or replacement funds.

The percentage of structurally deficient bridges should increase in the next ten years, in large part because tens of thousands of bridges built on the interstate highways during the boom years following the Second World War will soon be in need of major repairs. The Secretary of Transportation estimates that federal, state, and local governments will need to increase their yearly funding by almost 40 percent to meet the surging need for bridge rehabilitation.

Good morning!

I finally got the front yard mowed. It was relatively cool at 7 a.m. (but it didn't feel cool after I finished), so I got it done. Now, if the rain will hold off for a few days, I might get two weeks out of this mowing before I have to do it again.

There's a new sci-fi anthology series coming on ABC tonight at 10 p.m. It's been ready for a year, but ABC was unhappy with some of the episodes and put it on the shelf. Now, they're burning off the four remaining episodes they liked this month. I do plan to check it out. SInce it's an anthology, there's no plot to keep up with week by week, so it should be worth watching.

Hi Folks!

Long time no see, huh?   I'm still kicking but confess that some days are better then others.

Well, they finely came out with the list of position that will be effected by the lay off.  My title isn't on it--thank goodness!!  Now before we get all excited about that you have to remember that is only for now.

Depending on how people vote in January, there could be even deeper cuts and many, many, many more lay offs/firings.  And next time we won't have a the vacant positions to cushion the blow.

This time around the grand total of jobs lost were well over the four hundred mark.  That there were "only" 130 bodys lost was only due to the number of vacant positons.  Lord help us all come January.

Anyway, life goes on.  I can breath for a little while but I can't tell you how many nights I couldn't sleep and lay trembling in my bed because I was so scared.  I guess I'll really be a basket case come January.

I've been trying to keep myself busy.  I painted Mom's room, the hall and the bathroom.  I had to take a weekend or two off before I go on with the living room.  I'm thinking it will take two weekends to do that room.  I plan on doing the ceiling and two walls one weekend then the ceiling again (I'm thinking twice because of the smoke damage from the fire I told you about a couple years back) and the last two walls.

I've gotten rid of the old gas tanks in the back yard and got rid of the old recliner in the living room.  I then bought a new one (to me).

Last night, I took in two plays that were part of the Summer Play Festival.  Well, one and a half plays, to be exact.  >:(
My intention was to do a double header, and the timing listed on the website allowed for it, so I bought a ticket to both plays.

When I got to the theater to pick up the tickets, they apparently "updated" the running time of the earlier play, and added an intermission where there was none before.  Bottom line - first play would no longer end before second began.  So I only saw the first act of Missing Celia Rose.  Didn't want to disturb everyone by walking out in the middle of the second act.  What I saw seemed interesting. I do wonder what the conclusion was.
Title: Re:THE BALL PEEN HAMMER
Post by: Julie on August 04, 2007, 07:34:16 AM
The second play was Devil Land.  I thought it was really great for a festival play.  Very unusual - different.  Not the same old thing just slightly repackaged that is so often the cast with new plays.  I give lots and lots of credit when I see something so original and new.  That said, it's a very strange play, and highly disturbing on so many levels.  And they brought Dr. Seuss' The Grinch into it in a significant way. (I know - I know, that in itself is disturbing  :)  )  I kept wondering if they needed to get special permission from the Dr. Seuss estate to do that.

Anyway - the actors were terrific.  And I thought they did a wonderful job in general with the direction, sets, lighting.  It needs a little bit of revision, but I think it definitely could have life beyond the festival.

On the medical side, I got the results from my sleep study.

It turns out that I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Mild Restless Leg Syndrome, Hypersomnia and yes, I do snore but he said only mild to moderate.

What that means is I stop breathing an average of 25 times an hour for up to 43 seconds.  During that time my oxygen level falls to the mid to low 60's.  Which explains why I'm so TIRED all of the time.

Also the reason I was having rolling REMS was because towards morning, I'm so tired out from not sleeping, I finely fall into a very deep sleep and go into REM sleep for far longer then the average person.

The doctor asked me if I dream and I told him I have epics.  Now I know why.

My heart is ok--so far.  The doctor told me that my kind of sleeping puts alot of strain on it.

I'm going to have to have a couple of sleep studys done while they test to find if the mask/machine will help me.  Baring that working, I might have to have some surgery.  Not likely-- I'm told that most people respond to the mask/machine but it is possible.

My fear is that I do have a fear of anything over my mouth.  I go into a panic if someone puts their hand over my mouth or if I wake up and the blanket is over my face.  I hope I'm going to be able to take that mask.

Anyway I go back for the next study on Saturday, August 11th.

Good morning Julie.  Have we met yet?  I've been so out of things these past couple of months.

I really do need to make an effort to get my life back to normal.

I've signed up for a class on Money management.  It's just for three weeks on Tuesday night at six but I thought it would be a start on getting me out of the house.

I'm going to have to go soon because I promised Thelma I would come over to her house so we could go out for lunch and then go do some shopping.  That should be fun.  :)

I'm thinking that once everything settles down, I might start taking some computer classes or maybe some singing lessons (just for the fun of it) or piano lessions or photography classes.

The dogs are doing well.  I haven't been able to take them to the dog park these past couple of weeks because of painting the house.  That's another reason I took this weekend off.   They need to go have some fun too.

I won't paint next weekend because of the sleep study but I'm afraid that after that, I will try to get the living room done.  Then it's on to the kitchen and finely (maybe) my room.  Then the whole house will be redone.

DANISE,
When I've been through times of great grief, such as following my father's passing, I too would find that it would sometimes seem to come out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. Then, too, there were the times when anything having to do with him would stir it up.
One of the boxes'o'stuff that I haven't yet gone through is family stuff. It's been thirteen years since his passing and it still stirs up a certain amount of grief.

For me, the biggest help was finally settling the estate. As long as the estate was unsettled I had it on my mind, and every time I worked on it it stirred things up again. Once that was done, it was as if a black cloud had suddenly cleared.

It WILL get easier. I have no doubt all your painting has been good therapy for you. I do suggest you do something FUN--if not a musical, then something else. The photography class, perhaps. Focus on the future as you put aside the past.

My best to you.

DR Danise: I'm so glad they found something wrong with you!! I know...that sounds odd, but now they can move forward with fixing it! And trust me - the benefits of the CPAP machine far outweigh any initial discomfort from wearing the mask. BELIEVE ME - it's worth it. I've had a CPAP for nearly 3 years and it has literally changed my life. Aside from the immediate results - feeling rested and alert - a lot of other physiological changes will occur that you may not even notice - lowered blood pressure, increased blood oxygen levels, weight loss, improved mental and emotional health, increased concentration and memory and so much more...

And don't worry about the fit of the mask. They come in various shapes and sizes...some are full-face, including your mouth, but mine only covers my nose. Others insert directly into the nostrils, leaving the rest of your face completely uncovered. I took to the mask the first night they put it on me at my final sleep study and could not wait to get one of my own when I got home the next day.

Best of luck to you, and in other news...keep your chin up! We're all here for you... :)

Not to seem narcisistic, but...is that email in reference to me? If so, I hate to say that I won't be able to make it on Wednesday. Since I hadn't heard anything about an audition appointment (and I thought the auditions were Monday and/or Tuesday, anyway), I picked up a matinee on Wednesday. How wonderful to see DR Danise posting, even if I missed a chance to say hello.  Danise, you remain in my thoughts and prayers.  I hope the CPAP machine wil turn out to be a blessing for you.  I have several friends who have them; and, like Jason, they swear that the machine has changed their lives for the better.

If he contacts me in the next 12 hours I might be able to find a replacement for that shift, but even that's looking unlikely.

Jason, did you not receive the email I sent you last night?

As I said, I do not understand how I can told on July 13 that people will be notified in the next week about an audition time and now it's three weeks later!

Good morning from a hot and steamy New York. Even though it's hot and steamy I am defrosting the freezer. If I could have one new appliance in the kitchen it would be a frost-free refrigerator.

When Noel posted about his auditions for Such Good Friends I showed it to Anthony. He had auditioned on that day and wanted to say something to Noel. They have never met but Anthony wanted to express his appreciation to Noel for that post so I'm posting this for him (I know, I know, Anthony could post it on his own but he, like many other coupled-up posters, DerBrucer and Woody being the exception, doesn't post, not just here but anywhere). Here is Ant's response to Noel's post:

Greetings Noel!

   Ben pointed out your caring, heartfelt post from two weeks ago concerning the process surrounding the NYMF auditions for your show. I have to say, I was more than moved by your concerns, and frustration with the casting process. Such as the mass of performers you need to see, wishing you had parts for everyone, and the greater amount of actors you can’t possibly have time to see at one call. And, this is a situation I now understand a bit clearer, the problem that even with all the talent putting on their best at the EPAs, those auditioning may not be the right people to play the roles!

   Your thoughts were insightful and I was glad to have a point of view from the other side of the table.

   Without any pressing I honestly share that regardless of casting out come I was truly happy to audition in that room with such a crowd! Aside from remarking that the table arrangement stretching in a line across the room with all of you seated behind it reminded me of the Last Supper - Was I the only one who got that image? - I saw it as a chance for a mini-cabaret performance. (I played the Ukulele and sang the 1920s song.) I was hoping in my two minute audition time slot that the good time I was having would be had by all. I think I reached my goal.

   I feel so lucky to be able to audition, I enjoy it. (Then again I also enjoy jury duty, and going to the dentist.) One of the things that keeps me sane during the audition process, and from pulling out the remainder of my hair, I think, is the thought that there are roles out there for me, and if I just keep trying I’m sure to “meet one of them.”

Wishing you the very best with the production!
Cheers & a little soft-shoe,
Anthony Morelli

P.S. From the casting breakdown for “Such good friends” the bit of descriptive information I didn’t get was that the characters were wasps? For this I must chastise you. YES, you should write about the characters that come naturally, but it would be swell if you could include a few “short, ethnic, smart-alecks” in future!   :D

That's it. Back to the fridge.

Ben, please tell Ant that I enjoyed reading his post to Noel (yes, I read other people's mail).  Ant certainly has the right attitude for keeping himself sane in a business that so often, works against that concept.

I do hope I will have the pleasure of meeting both, you and Ant, sometime in the not too distant future.

I guess I'll really be a basket case come January....

~~~Continued Job Vibes for Danise!!~~~
More than 80 percent of all U.S. bridges are located east of the geographic midpoint between the coasts. The skewed distribution is due in part to the way the Midwest and Great Plains states were settled--in the so-called "township-and-range" pattern, which resulted in the laying down of land parcels and roadways in evenly spaced grids; in order to maintain this even spacing, many bridges had to be built over small waterways. Iowa, for example contains more bridges than Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming combined.
der Brucer
Uh, couldn't another part of the reason that "80 percent of all U.S. bridges are located east of the geographic midpoint between the two coasts" be that most of the population of the U.S. is located east of the geographic midpoint between the two coasts?  People/governments are a lot less likely to build bridges where no one is likely to be travelling.  (Unless there's pork involved, of course.)
A co-worker of mine (Deborah) is graduating from library school.  Friends of hers sent her a Bento boxed lunch for a gift.  Now, you may think that a boxed lunch as a gift is not anything special, but it reallyl is!  Everything in it is edible, even all of the flowers.  The woman who makes these has a different box for each season (summer, fall, winter, spring), but only makes 10 boxes each season, so they are rare.  Here's a picture of it:
I am hereby declaring August as Rude Customer Month.
It happens every August - the percentage of rude customers goes up, and the ones who are rude are particularly so, more than before.
Yesterday, for example, a customer from Pennsylvania insisted that I honor a coupon from her state.  I checked with the floor manager, who told me that the coupon was not valid here in Delaware - Pennsylvania is a completely separate division of the company, we do not honor their Bonus Cards and they do not honor ours (we substitute the customer's phone number to give them our bonuses on sales), and the same goes for coupons.
Nope, the customer insisted on trying to make me feel guilty about rejecting the coupon.  "But it says 'Giant' on your nametag," she pouted pointedly.  Yeah, sure, we get the name tags from a common supplier.  A lot of our store-brand products come from common suppliers, too, and are labeled 'Giant'.  Giant and Super-G are owned by the same company.  That doesn't make us the same company.  "Well, the coupon doesn't say 'not valid outside of Pennsylvania.'  It should say 'not valid outside of Pennsylvania' if it isn't valid in Pennsylvania."  Look, lady, do I look like I'm responsible for what is or is not printed on the coupon?
Truth be told, I didn't say any of these smart-ass comments to the customer, but I sure wanted to.
OK, she wasn't really rude, but she sure was trying to make me feel small.  I'm six foot two - small isn't part of my personality profile.
Then, today, there was the customer whose son was pestering her to buy him a kind of candy that she didn't want to buy.  She kept telling him to put it back.  Finally, the brat took the cap off of the package.  At this point, I spoke up: "Excuse me, could you put the cap back on the candy, please?" I bassoed.  (My basso has a profound effect on misbehaving youngsters, I've found.)
What was Mommy's response?  I was, essentially, backing her up.  Was she grateful?  Of course not.  Being unable to control her brat, she got snippy with me.  She grabbed the bags I had filled with her groceries out of my hands, bitched at how I was doing my job, and basically tried to make me feel inadequate.  Didn't work.
Maybe that doesn't count as rude, either.  Or does it?  When a customer tries to make a clerk feel small, tries to pull a power-play on the clerk, that's rude.
It's going to be a long month.
Thank you for posting this; truly warmed my heart to read.  My notes from July 20 say "very funny."
Such Good Friends is about a self-described "bunch of old Jews" and it pleased me to find three guys from the EPAs called in for a second look; the younger characters can't be ethnic if the show's going to accurately depict the television industry in the early 1950s; so, I was placed in the unusual position of rejecting the guy who gave the best audition, all because he looked a little too much like I looked at his age.  Probably, none of this will make any sense until you see the show, and I'm being extra careful about spoilers.
Well, we had a meeting with our future tenant and so far so good. I've never done anything like this before so it feels a little weird, but it's a very generous offer we're making to her and I think she will be good to the house.
The cats already know something's up and they are acting worried. Based on their past history, I think they figure we're getting ready to go on a long trip. Lots of shuffling of clothes, etc. They are sitting in all the open drawers and boxes as if to say "don't forget about ME!"
I would if there was something around that I wanted to see.
Meat Loaf is back at Ruth Eckard either next month or in October and I really would like to go.  I wish I could get over my fear of coming over that darn bridge.  Seeing what happened the other day doesn't make me feel any better about it either.
Why can't he come to Tampa!
Oh, you SHOULD go to there, DR Danise! I have been to the Ruth Eckerd Theater MANY times (To see Rosie or Dame Julie to name a few!) and it's a gorgeous little place and I loved the causeway leading to Clearwater! So many fond memories for me! So much fun driving over the water! And I love the laurel bushes (Poisonous! Like some other... bush I know!!) along the way!
And you sure need to take care of that apnea problem; could be real serious! I've recently learnt that very few women do snore because it's the testosterones that make men snore! We learn new things at any age, don't we!
Good vibes to you and the dogs! Woof! ;)
I do, I just wish I didn't feel sick every time I eat.  Oddly that hasn't stopped me from gaining back the weight I lost in the days leading up to the procedure.
You should have the test.  If all is clear it doesn't need repeating for 10 years.  The difficult part is really the drink, truly horrible.  You are out for the test & now they use better drugs that don't make you sick.  LOL-don't go my me.  I had to force Keith not to go to the gym after his tests.
Back from the NYPL.  I've just heard that the 2008 NY Firefighters calendar has been junked because the coverman has been frolicking on a "Guys Gone Wild" video showing too much of himself to the world.  Why this has embarassed the NYC firefighters is beyond me.  I'd think  the publicity would be good for sales.
DR ELmo ~ Thanks so much (she says sarcastically).  I dreamed last night that Cason had turned into a hooligan. We were having a big "talk" (he always knows something is up when I say "we need to talk"...) about how he had become so snippy in his comments and just down right rude to his DF and me -- and not appreciative of the help and support we had been giving him. And instead of being sorry, he just became more hateful as the talk turned into this awful argument.  It ended with me calling him a little sh*t (which I've never called him -- to his face, that is -- there were a couple of times in middle school and high school when I thought it...).  I rarely have nightmares, so all of you that have them a bunch, I will now feel your pain...
Oh you poor guy.  How often do you have to have them?  Keith is now on a four year schedule.  I hope you are ok.
My dad died from colon cancer and I've had polyps (benign ones!) removed twice; my next visit should be in 2010! Last time I went, the reception desk forgot I was in and me, being so patient, waited for almost 2 hours! (I was 30 minutes early!) The doctor was kind of mad at me because he thought I was late!! They had phoned my place and, of course, I was at the clinic! I told him that, instead of giving me a "lesson  in living" he should better make sure that the clinic employees were to be more professional! It's true that, for once, I had been more than patient! It was around Xmas time and I guess the front desk old bag, who was so good at bossing other patients around (I told the doctor that I was a patient... patient!!) thought I was part of the Xmas tree decorations since I was seating next to that tree!
Then they messed up with my bill and it took months to fix their mistake and me going back to the clinic to fix it good!
Don't you love my stories?!
Why I prefer to walk in the mornings, so I don't have to worry about pre-hydrating ;D  When Bryan was in high school I went for a walk late in the afternoon without eating or drinking much during the day.  About half way into the walk I realized I wasn't going to make it home.  This was before cell phones & I had to wait until I found a woman outside her house to call home for me.  She had a portable phone (wasn't about to let this strange person into her house) & I called Bryan to collect me.
I now forget but it's not the salty stuff anymore; does not taste that great but is not so hard on the stomach as it used to be!
But boy, does that take us to the bathroom more than we'd like! Maybe a new drink they've started here; it's over 2 years now and I guess I want to forget about it! Let's say it's the only bad moment of the procedure and it can be handled easily by most!
I can't remember the exact name of the show (it's a very generic title, not memorable). All I know is that it's on ABC tonight at 10 p.m. In tonight's story, Judy Davis plays a psychiatrist and Sam Waterston an amnesiac. Just the cast alone would make me want to watch it.
I knew I had two episodes in the MOONLIGHTING box set (seasona 1 and 2) to watch, so I put them in next.
The first episode had to do with a man who thought his wife had died, so he paid hit men to kill him asking only that he be given a week to get his affairs in order. 48 hours before he was slated to die, he saw his wife walking down the street, so he sent word by David and Maddie to stop the hit men before they got to him. They were assured he'd be spared, but then the man gets blown up in his car, so David and Maddie go looking for the killer.
Pretty good episode, but the resolution with the killer was absurd.
And it turns the people who wrote the music and lyrics are two-thirds of the group "Groove Lily" who've had some success with their holiday show, Striking Twelve.  -They're supplementing, as it were, Randy Newman's "You've Got A Friend In Me".  Good music, and good people.  And the book writer happens to be Mindi Dickstein who penned the book for Little Women.
My dad died from colon cancer and I've had polyps (benign ones!) removed twice; my next visit should be in 2010! Last time I went, the reception desk forgot I was in and me, being so patient, waited for almost 2 hours! (I was 30 minutes early!) The doctor was kind of mad at me because he thought I was late!! They had phoned my place and, of course, I was at the clinic! I told him that, instead of giving me a "lesson  in living" he should better make sure that the clinic employees were to be more professional! It's true that, for once, I had been more than patient! It was around Xmas time and I guess the front desk old bag, who was so good at bossing other patients around (I told the doctor that I was a patient... patient!!) thought I was part of the Xmas tree decorations since I was seating next to that tree!
Then they messed up with my bill and it took months to fix their mistake and me going back to the clinic to fix it good!
Don't you love my stories?!
You waited nearly two hours for the doctor to look at your ass?  He must have an amazing bedside manner!
I've made chili for dinner tonight.  I cubed a piece of beef that is normally used for pot roast, added the other ingredients, and then popped it into a very low oven and decided to take a nap.
When I woke up and gave the chili a stir, the beef just fell apart into wonderful little shreds.  This is going to be yummers to the max.
I think I'd better toast some garlic toast, to go with the yummers chili.
Well, I would not put it that way! I waited for almost 2 hours on the colonoscopy day; the surgeon had been late once (Emergency call) and I thought it might have been the same reason, while it just was the front desk Lady (Whose perfunctory talking is "Have a seat; we'll call you!" and who talks down to you if you try to utter anything! She has to deal with senile people most of the time, I guess!) who had completely forgotten about me!
It's when talking to another lady patient that she told me that she just had the colonoscopy herself with the same surgeon AND her appointment time was after mine!!
Ain't that quite a story you all had to know about?!
...And the rest of my auditions went well too.  Lots of great talent called in.
And it turns the people who wrote the music and lyrics are two-thirds of the group "Groove Lily" who've had some success with their holiday show, Striking Twelve.  -They're supplementing, as it were, Randy Newman's "You've Got A Friend In Me".  Good music, and good people.  And the book writer happens to be Mindi Dickstein who penned the book for Little Women.
Yes - I saw their holiday show, Striking 12.  Very enjoyable.  They had quite a good run with it.
So, I went to see Skip's show this afternoon at 59E59, and wow, he is a really talented composer.  His music was beautiful.  The show itself is four short unrelated plays; two before intermission, two after.  The last two plays were especially good.  Skip's play, the final one, was the real treat because Skip was playing piano live for the show, and the music and lyrics are just so well integrated into the story.   A great afternoon.
After dog teeth brushing I will resume my Bollywood movie of the weekend AWARA (1951). This film is considered a classic of Hindi cinema...and I am here to tell you it is very, very, very (that is three verys) good.
It stars the great Prithviraj Kapoor who was quite a matinee idol in the 1930s, and this film was his beginning of character roles. His son, Raj Kapoor, takes the leading man role.
The wonderful Nargis (playing an up and coming young lawyer) is the leading lady.
Oh, it's when a younger lady working the desk (She was not on duty when I first came in!) called me up! She tried to joke about the situation (Where were you?) but I was mad and then, when I went up to the surgery department, the surgeon was snickering at me; I told him what I thought about the place! I told him not to lecture me because I am an adult and that, if he had to lecture someone it sure was the person at the desk. He then said: "I'm sorry! We have to work with jerks sometimes!"
I arrived at the clinic around 3:00 pm and left around 8:00 am. I must have slept for one hour after the examination! No polyps were removed then!
I began my evening by watching the Blu-ray disc of ROVING MARS. I watched the standard definition DVD three or four weeks ago. The Blu-ray is much more three dimensional at its best moments, but, of course, the film is culled from so many different sources that the sharpness of the image is constantly in flux. I'd say it's about 80% exceptional and the other 20% merely good. One can definitely see an upgrade in picture quality, however.
The soundtrack is an uncompressed digital track encoded at 4.6 mbps. (Most common DVD soundtracks are encoded at 192-444 kps. so the increase in sound clarity, immediacy, and smoothness is startling.)
Post by: Matt H. on August 04, 2007, 08:23:39 PM
I also rewatched the bonus featurette "Mars: Past, Present, and Future" which was also presented on the Blu-ray disc in high def. Again, there is a definite upgrade in picture quality, but I didn't find it quite as big a jump from the standard def quality on the regular DVD.
I had every intention of watching THE TOAST OF NEW ORLEANS tonight, but when I finished with ROVING MARS, I had a desire to watch a James Bond movie instead, so I put in GOLDFINGER and watched it upconverted through the Blu-ray player. Gorgeous picture and I opted for the new DTS soundtrack on these discs which is a very impressive reimagining of the original mono soundtrack.
I ended my evening by watching MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION on ABC. The drama starring Judy Davis and Sam Waterston was very talky, and I despaired after the first quarter hour that it wasn't going anywhere. I stuck with it, however, and each remaining quarter offered a neat surprise twist that kept me interested.
This could very easily have fit right in with any of the one hour TWILIGHT ZONE episodes from 40 years ago.
BTW, I watched the show in high def. The opening credits looked really great, but I didn't think the remainder of the show was all that impressive in high def. I found it just a tad soft, but that may have been on purpose to be kind to the two stars in terms of photographing them. I liked Waterston's shorter haircut, but Davis had the makeup really slathered on.
Over the last 24 hours or so, I had the DVR record Joan Crawford's awful film BERSERK! The last time it was on, I recorded it with every intention of burning my own DVD-R, but the film was so ghastly that I didn't think I'd waste a DVD-R on it. Since then, I've had a change of heart, so I will burn myself a copy at some point.
 I mean, if I went to the trouble of buying the set that had TROG in it, BERSERK is not a step down. In campy value, they're about the same degree of awful.
I'm heading down to bed, too. It's been a very long day.
Good night!
Amy, Miss Beverley Humphreys sends you greetings (along with some other new listeners) on this evening's show. My review of Les Miz is broadcast today (about 20 mintues into the show) and then at the half hour mark she mentions all the new listeners from all over the world and that's when she says hello to you!
Awwwww! That's cool! I listened to your review when I got home and am now just catching up and heard Beverly give me a shout out!
Thank=you, Edi!
(But, it's der Brucer who is in charge of the weeds garden.  Sorry.)
Oh...Der B mentioned your moonflowers one time, so I  thought you were the gardener. (Although I wondered how you had the time/energy!)
A GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN
Coincidentally, my favorite Turtles song (well, it was written by Johnny(!) Williams and Leslie Bricusse, but performed by the Turtles.) It's so GROOVY!!
A friend sent me information on a deadly form of breast cancer I have never heard of, IBC or inflammatory breast cancer.  They symptoms are very different from regular cancer.  There are no lumps & can't be detected with a mammogram.  Often doctors think it is just a mosquito bite or an infection.
Go to this site and watch the first video:
http://www.komotv.com/ibc/
This scares the #$%$ out of me! OK, time to get several exams...
I saw the IBC video a couple months ago, I think they had it on the local news.  It seems to have visual symptoms, it's just that doctors are saying they are bug bites or whatever.
Der Brucer is watching FoxNews.  They're talking about autoeroticism, I think.  I'm not exactly sure why.
The thought of Bill O'Reilly and autoeroticism doesn't scan.
In O'Reilly's case, it may be a good bet it's about getting turned on by an automobile.
Let's at least get to 300 postings, it's the least we can do, then we'll get a good head start for tomorrow's posts.
