SOUTHERN VOICE (http://www.southernvoice.com/2007/10-26/arts/feature/7617.cfm) is enjoying suggesting some costumes:

OCTOPUS

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho)

Two hands just isn’t enough for someone who disassociates from reality as much as Sen. Larry Craig. He needs one testicl— er, tentacle — to do his bathroom stall toe-tapping, another to cast his anti-gay votes in Congress, another to hold back his angry Republican colleagues, and one more to blind fold his delusional wife. Depending on how busy the bathroom is, we’re sure Craig could find uses for the remaining four limbs.

Quote
VACANT MANHATTAN BUILDING LINKED TO 1901 MURDER CASE COLLAPSES

NEW YORK  —  A vacant Manhattan building that played a part in an infamous Gilded Age murder case partially collapsed Saturday night, less than two weeks after city officials expressed concerns about the building's stability.

The building became a salacious footnote in a sensational 1907 trial involving a teenage showgirl, a jealous husband, and renowned architect Stanford White. He designed the original Madison Square Garden, the famous arch at Washington Square Park and several other city landmarks.

White rented part of 22 W. 24th St. and used it for trysts in 1901 with 16-year-old showgirl Evelyn Nesbit. She subsequently married, and her vengeful husband, Harry Thaw, shot and killed White on Madison Square Garden's rooftop garden in 1906. The trial revealed that White's 24th Street hideaway was outfitted with a red velvet swing, among other racy details. Thaw was eventually acquitted on the grounds of insanity.
...

AMAZING! How can a New Yorker write this story without a mention of RAGTIME? Or mentioning:

Good morning, all!  I will again be E&T most of the day.  I have a morning in Toyland, then a movie and dinner with my friend Matthew. We want to see GONE BABY GONE, the film we tried to catch last weekend, and I hope none of the screening times are sold out when we get there.  We have several theatre options for the film so that'as good.

Today at Toyland, I've got to begin the outline for the prefatory maerial for the LADY OF THE SLIPPER score.  I've spent a lot of the last week revising the BABES IN TOYLAND critical notes, and that continues as well. I see a lot of the NYPL microfilm room in my near future!

Another uncomfortable dream last night about the Macbeths.  My dad was in the dream as well.  I am not looking forward to this Ohio trip in two weeks but I am looking forward to seeing my new niece-by-marriage, other family members, and my Ohio friends.

I just checked the weather and thankfully it doesn't look like it will rain on wednesday (although that could change). I was worried because it has been miserable and rainy the past few days!

This leaves me with six episodes left in the set plus two more bonus featurettes. Should be able to be done with it by the end of the day. I would truly love to also be able to watch one of the movies on the DVR - either BLOOD DIAMOND (which I'm leaning toward) or BORAT (which is shorter and may be all I have time for).

I've mentioned it only in passing, but as a favor to our out-of-town hainsies/kimlets who can't come to our fundraiser, I will post a complete list of our silent auction items - therefore, should anyone be interested in bidding you can send your top bids to me and I'll make sure they're entered.  As mentioned before, the items that could be of interest are the signed musical quotes, which include a full-size music sheet in Sondheim's hand of Not A Day Goes By from Merrily We Roll Along - not only the melody but the accompaniment as well, three signed quotes from John Kander (All That Jazz, New York, New York, and Cabaret), Popular from Wicked by Schwartz, Ragtime by Flaherty and Ahrens, and a printed sheet of A Place Called Home, signed by Menken and Ahrens.  We're still hoping to have some actual signed quote from Menken, and we'll definitely have one from Rupert Holmes.

Also, I've put into the auction the original painting used for the cover of Lost In Boston IV, painting by Leon Joosen, who did all four covers.  It's beautifully framed and matted and is, of course, a one of a kind item.

I'm at home and watching TV.  I watched an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" and now am watching the second hour of the two-hour season premier to "Las Vegas."  My sister just called, reminding me that I said that I'd help her get some shelving units at Costco (which is where I need to go anyway, to get more blank DVD-Rs for the rest of the Legally Blonde copies, since I ran out of discs ;)), so I need to stop watching TV, take a shower, put on some clothes and go to Costco, then it'll probably be time for rehearsal.

Have a good day, all!

Last night after the meeting I went to the Hollywood Forever Cemetary to take part in their amazing Dia De Los Muertos celebration. There were about 200 Alters to honor the dead, along with about 50 arts/craft vendors and authentic mexican food vendors. There were five stages with dance troups and musical ensembles performing everything from ancient aztec traditional dances to modern mexican american music. Throughout the night there were over 10,000 people walking though.

I have pictures, but I cannot figure out how to turn them right side up at the moment

Watching the extras on THE JAZZ SINGER set....so TJS was filmed at the New York Studios...and the WB bought First National in 1928.

Did they NOT have Hollywood facilities until then?

This is not correct. The Warners Studios then were in Hollywood and when they bought First National, they moved there (Burbank). Warners did have a New York based studio, too, but THE JAZZ SINGER was filmed in Los Angeles.

Perhaps Full Metal Jacket - haven't seen it since the day it came out.  Loved the first half, hated the second.  We'll see how I feel now.

Exactly how I feel. I think the first half is as galvanizing a film about the military as has ever been made. The second half couldn't be more disappointing, dull even. The outskirts of London just can't substitute for Southeast Asia.

I was thinking that was the case, but it's not too clear on the DVD....they even show the New York Vitagraph studio and have people talking about the facilities when they start talking about the filming.

I spent almost the entire afternoon with CSI: MIAMI episodes. I am one away from finishing. I finally got the the last three episodes which contain the firing of Ryan Wolfe and his desperation in trying to maintain a kindship to the team.

Even knowing how things are going now on the show, these episodes still make my blood boil. And his "friends" on the squad were SO judgmental and harsh, everyone except Natalia Boa Vista, and she talked behind his back though she was civil with him in person. If I were Ryan, I'd definitely by trying to cultivate some new friends even if I did want to get back on the team.

During my period of non-posting this morning, I decided to do some fridge-cleaning of my own. However, instead of ditching things in the garbage can, I started prepping some things for dinner - and for my lunch.  I placed some sliced carrots and fennel in one dish, and wrapped up some beets (red and golden) in foil - everything sprinkled with olive oil and kosher salt, then put them all in the oven to roast for a while.  I let the beets cool down for a while, but I did end up eating some of the roasted carrots and fennel as my lunch.  -Sometimes simple truly is the best - they were so good.

I also prepped the chicken for tonight's dinner.  A slathered a compound butter under and over the skin, placed some thick-sliced bacon over the breasts, and scattered some lemon wedges and sliced onions in the pan.  -It's currently roasting away in the oven - and, needless to say, the apartment smells quite wonderful right now.

-Now, I'm wondering if I just save the roasted beets for later in the week (well, for tomorrow - they'd make a good salad with some feta cheese and mesclun), and just eat the rest of the carrots and fennel with the chicken.  We shall see.

After prepping my dinner, I headed on down to Baayork's place for the meeting to discuss Thommie Walsh's memorial service.  Well, when I got there, it had turned out that the meeting had been moved back to Noon - and, of course, no one had told me.  However, since the first part of the meeting was more about logistics, it worked out fine.  When I arrived, it was mainly the music staff that was left.  I got to meet the legendary Don Pippin for the first time, as well as Tommy Tune, Ken Lundy, and few other folks.

The meeting time had been changed due to a scheduling conflict that Mr. Tune had, and he actually "apologized" to me for the mix up.  And, I swear, I've met him briefly a few times, and each time I see him I still can't believe he's that tall.  It also turned out that Don Pippin and I have a dear friend in common - whom we've both lost touch with over the past few years - so after talking about him, we also just talked about everything else under the sun.

And in true "Miss Wong" fashion, Baayork had set out a little spread of food and champagne(!) for everyone.  It was all quite good, and after most of the guests had left, there were four of us who tried our best not to finish the rest of the food.  In any case...

Yes, I still feel humbled to have been asked to come aboard this "adventure".  And after hearing the potential line-up of people coming in to honor Thommie - and for whom I'll be playing for, well... I really do feel humbled... And excited... And a little scared.  Since no one has really been confirmed, I really can't say anything right now, but even if just one of the people mentioned today happens to come in, well... :) :) :)

Just pulling up Thommie Walsh's listing on the IBDB brings up a ton of "possibilities", and that does not include the people who's cabaret acts he directed, the off-Broadway and regional shows he worked on, etc., etc., etc.   It looks like I'm in for quite a "historic" adventure over the next couple of weeks.

...And on the way back from the meeting, I decided to take a little walk through Central Park since it was such a nice, sunny, Fall day.  Well... They started setting up the bleachers and other observation areas for next week's New York City Marathon, so my usually walking path was a bit "constructed".

So, instead, I walked over to Levain which was surprisingly busy today.  They were actually out of their daily loaves, and all they had up front were the cookies and a few scones.  Everything else was sold out.  Even the manager was surprised by how fast their shelves were clearing today - I guess it was the true Fall chill in the air.  I picked up some cookies (of course), and then headed back over to 81st to grab the train back uptown.  And here I am.

I haven't seen this trailer, but if this is the actual premise of the film, you would probably know that she died from the get-go so I don't think they were wrong to include that, if that's the case.

The way we work with studios is that the trailer producer comes up with a basic concept/script for how to market the film...the lines that are either spoken in vo or as written titles. ("In a world"..."one man"...blahblahblah). The studio or whoever the producer answers to approves the copy. Occasionally we'll have a meeting to discuss how they intend to market the film so that the trailer idea is on the same page as the big marketing picture.

Then I get the script and decide what sound bites and shots will tell the story, at least enough of it to intrigue the viewer. I like to set up a lot of ideas and not resolve them, so you would want to see the film to find out how it resolves. Usually the producers pick out sound bites and shots, but I've been fortunate in that they leave me alone to do my first cut. After that I will revise as necessary (sometimes the studio doesn't change a thing, which is gratifying in one way, but less money, so...)

The studio (or a powerful director) has the ultimate say, though. Don't shoot the messenger!

One of my favorite songs from THE KING AND I

Matt AShford and his wife Christina did a presentation of the piece on SOAPTALK a few years ago. Beautifully done.

Roasted fennel and carrots - YUM!

I have a question for anyone who might know about SAVING GRACE.

Has the final show of Season one aired yet on TNT?  After our last episode we got a rather mysterious note at the bottom of the screen. It said the last 4 episodes would air starting dec 31st. But until then they would re-air Season 1. Very odd.

I wonder how many people's VCRs (and other electronics) automatically changed the time by mistake. :(

I just checked the temp for Halloween here and it is supposed to be a high of 14 C for the day (that's high 55s i guess). So that could be pretty decent. I hate it when it's rainy or really cold.

It's almost time for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES!

I didn't really do much today. My sister and niece showed up at around 9:30am. We went to Chapters (book store). They were having a party/fair. With a petting zoo and clown. We had free cotton candy (my niece loved it). And the clown made her a pink dog balloon.

They redid the whole store which was sort of odd.  They did storytime but megan didn't like it.  All she wanted to do (believe it or not) was ride up or down the escalator. The funniest thing was as we were going up one time. We turned and went right down. And the lady and little child in front of us did the same thing. We had to laugh because her daughter had begged her to ride the escalator too!

It's not my favorite show by any means. But there are a few interesting characters. And the storylines usually keep my attention.  It just happens it started here during the summer.

Still no CLOSER for us this season, which really sucks. The station that was showing it turned to an E chanel. ANd the W (women's channel) that also shows it is only on season 2! :(

My sister really wanted to make a roast chicken. But she had never made one before. Plus she did not think she would have time to make it when she got home (it needed 2 hours). So we made ours side by side. ANd she took hers home.

Today I was watching Food TV and saw what looked like a great recipe for a turkey burger.  It has applesauce and maple syrup in it... so I decided to try it. Well, she said she cooked it on an oiled grill pan.  I have a grill pan - it's either LeCreuset or Rachael Ray...anyway, I oiled it and put the mixed up burger on it...after 6 minutes I went to turn it and it was SOOOO stuck.  It left a total mess  so there was no way I could flip and keep cooking. So, I tried to finish it in the microwave.  Well they were cooked, but tasted really dry and lousy. I realize they had a sauce on tv and I was prepared to make it, but when the burgers bombed..I decided not to do it.

So, all you chefs and cooks out there.  What did I do wrong and how do I make it work if I try it again???

I'm back from a good day in Toyland and GONE BABY GONE, which I liked very much and a bleaker film I haven't seen in some time.  My friend Matthew lived in Dorchester for a while - when I visited him and his girlfriend Myra they lived in Back Bay - and he said the accents were dead on.  The cast was quite wonderful and the mystery quite involved and heartbreaking.  The preview for John Cusack's new film GRACE IS GONE thoroughly pissed me off by providing too, too much information.  Why not simply call the film GRACE IS DEAD? What do these asshole trailer assemblers think?

Elmore, I believe that the only people in the movie who don't know that Grace is Dead are the children, which is the point of the film.  I don't think there has been any attempt by the Producers or the Press to hid the fact that she is dead.

DR Cillaliz - Hmm... Is the grill pan you have cast iron?  If so, has/is it already seasoned?  If not, well... Next time... semi-generously oil the pan before putting on the heat.  And then let it heat up over medium-low heat for a few minutes before turning it up to medium/medium-high.  And, yes, it should smoke a little.  Then just to be safe, I would place a little more oil in the pan.

Now, if your pan is not cast iron, well... The general rule - which I remember from Jeff Smith, The Frugal Gourmet - is "Hot Pan, Cold Oil - Food Won't Stick".  Let the pan heat up first, then put the oil in.

As for "the turning", well...  I'm guessing the sugar from the applesauce and maple syrup probably contributed to your sticking problem.  Otherwise, once enough of a crust has formed on the burger, it should more or less release on it's own - well, with a little bit of help.  I would also lower the heat a little bit - turkey meat, especially when ground, requires gentler handling than beef does.  But then again...

Stick Happens.  ;D

that's also a possibility.   I'm considering just using a pan instead of the grill pan.  I really don't care if it has the cute little grill marks. I'dl love to have your recipe.   I'm actually thinking of trying the foodtv recipe with cranberry instead of applesauce.

Callie is most upset with me now and doesn't really want anything to do with me.  She hasn't eaten today and I think maybe her stomach is upset from the medicine.  So I'm not going to give her any tonight.  Perhaps that will give her some time to let things settle down a little

I also did some research and looked at her chart from the vet.  It says they gave her phosphate enemas the last time she was there.  Everything I read says those can be fatal in cats.  I am very worried and will call the new vet tomorrow to see what I can find out about it.

I'm still sort of pinching myself, still processing it all.  And, frankly, all of this could not have come at a more perfect time.  The past two weeks have been a little "weird" for me professionally speaking.  And since my profession is my love and my life, well, I've been having my share of pensive moments lately.  I've spared all of you the details since there are actually some things still in limbo, and, in the larger scheme of things, everything actually seems to be working out for the best.  But there have been moments here and there where I just truly did not know what to do, if I should do anything at all.

So, now I have a nice "distraction" as it were for the next three weeks, and it will be nice not thinking about the other stuff.  I've done too much thinking already.

Thanks again to everyone for all your support and encouragement.  It really does mean a lot to me.  Yes, I am doing well here in New York City.  I just need to stop thinking that it seems like I'm doing well here in the Big Apple.

DR Cillaliz - As for the cranberry sauce...  One of my favorite FoodTV recipes if for a Turkey Meatloaf.  Before you place the ground turkey mixture in the pan, you place some jellied cranberry sauce and brown sugar in the bottom of the loaf pan.  Then once you turn it out after cooking... YUMMY!

From mlop (a friend of FJL) over on All That Chat:
I just got word that the memorial for Thommie Walsh will not be on the 16th of November from a friend of his. As soon as I find out the new date, I will post it.

What say, Jose?

Only in profile, IMHO, from front-on, I didn't think he looked that great. . .

Oddly when he was PASSIONS, some fans of that show had a shrine for him on some message board. I only read about it on another message board. They were very upset when he left.

I would say that Jose has had an amazing time of it in NY thus far.  I can't think of anyone else I know that has gotten as good a rep as fast.

Jose, that's wonderful!  I hope you're able to keep us up on what's happening.  I love to live vicariously through Internet posts! :D

What are the obvious reasons?

Clearly subject matter that Mall Soccer Moms might not want on display where their young'uns might ask questions. I can order it on-line form Wal-Mart for store delivery, but you won't see it on the shelves. Wal-Mart also screens their store-stocked DVDs to exclude controversial items.

I wouldn't be surpised if some of the gay activists didn't attempt a protest outside a main line store that sold it.

I wonder how many people's VCRs (and other electronics) automatically changed the time by mistake. :(

I turned the automatic daylight saving feature off.  My VCRs don't keep great time and this reminds me to reset the time to a more accurate time.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some rather ugly things going on tonight. Yes, the surface was kind of snappy, but I felt very uncomfortable watching the neighbors be so judgemental.

Jesse Metcalf has aged into a very gorgeous young man.

He has. ;) But he also looks like he has new teeth.  That's a little weird. :-\

DR JRand will be pleased to know that both PORTRAIN IN BLACK and MADAME X will appear on DVD in February.

Oh, and the Tammy films will be out also.

~~~CONTINUED VIBES FOR CALLIE!!~~~
