VACANT MANHATTAN BUILDING LINKED TO 1901 MURDER CASE COLLAPSESAMAZING! How can a New Yorker write this story without a mention of RAGTIME? Or mentioning:
NEW YORK — A vacant Manhattan building that played a part in an infamous Gilded Age murder case partially collapsed Saturday night, less than two weeks after city officials expressed concerns about the building's stability.
…
The building became a salacious footnote in a sensational 1907 trial involving a teenage showgirl, a jealous husband, and renowned architect Stanford White. He designed the original Madison Square Garden, the famous arch at Washington Square Park and several other city landmarks.
White rented part of 22 W. 24th St. and used it for trysts in 1901 with 16-year-old showgirl Evelyn Nesbit. She subsequently married, and her vengeful husband, Harry Thaw, shot and killed White on Madison Square Garden's rooftop garden in 1906. The trial revealed that White's 24th Street hideaway was outfitted with a red velvet swing, among other racy details. Thaw was eventually acquitted on the grounds of insanity.

And the word of the day is: ONEIROMANCY!
And The Song of The Day IS : I HAVE DREAMED
Isn't it unbelievale that the end of October is in sight? This has to have been the fastest passing month this year, at least for me.
And the word of the day is: ONEIROMANCY!An example of ONEIROMANCY: I dreamed I was eating CREAMY ONION soup... in my Maidenform bra!
So the White-Nesbit love nest has collapsed.....what happened to the building sounds like what is happening to Joan Collins.Yes, it's sad what a lack of support can do when things get older.
I have dreamed.....

Since we're celebrating an anniversary and 3 birthdays, that was a lot of shopping.
We bought my DM-I-L a copy of "Water for Elephants", since it was recommended by several Dear Readers. Maybe she'll loan it to me when she's done!
I always get confused at the end of the month.

Well, for those who thought I was kidding the otehr day about what i said about Maryann Lopinto, note that the Spceial Thanks in the York's program for BAKER'S WIFE read (note the third name):
Joe & Elisa Stein, Randy Hansen, Maryann Lopinto, Walter Gershuny, etc. etc.
*****
Still, Jrand, that was a very funny joke the other day.
Jrand - Oh, believe me, I've been telling it, and telling it, and telling it.
:)
Ok, time to go to the grocery store...later
the clock on out thermostat confused Keith this morning, seems it didn't know the date for changing the clocks had been changed. ;D
After the banquet we went to Minerva's where a couple friends of mine were playing in a guitar duo. We had a couple celebratory drinks, a appetizer and some good conversation with good music in the background. It was a nice end to the weekend.
Watching EVIL UNDER THE SUN.....what a wonderful group of actors and actresses....sophisticated....lovely Cole Porter music....great clothes....stunning locations....literate script.
And was there ever a more handsome man than Nicholas Clay....in that black bathing costume.
One Of My Favorite Movies
It's rather like an HHW gathering on Majorca, isn't it? Minus the murder, of course....in all likelihood..... 8)
Watching the extras on THE JAZZ SINGER set....so TJS was filmed at the New York Studios...and the WB bought First National in 1928.
Did they NOT have Hollywood facilities until then?
Perhaps Full Metal Jacket - haven't seen it since the day it came out. Loved the first half, hated the second. We'll see how I feel now.
This is not correct. The Warners Studios then were in Hollywood and when they bought First National, they moved there (Burbank). Warners did have a New York based studio, too, but THE JAZZ SINGER was filmed in Los Angeles.
I was thinking that was the case, but it's not too clear on the DVD....they even show the New York Vitagraph studio and have people talking about the facilities when they start talking about the filming.
I haven't actually been able to find the DVD of Cruising.

Larry - Isn't that death part of the very premise of that film?
Can one of our sheet music people e-mail me Meadowlark, preferably from the actual score? If not, then from a book, I guess. We have my arrangement from my Schwartz album, but I want to do it as written.
I tried to upload a Harry Potter page dance, but I was informed that the upload folder is full.
So, BK, I wanted to inform you of this.
Larry - Isn't that death part of the very premise of that film?
DR Jose - I haven't had a chance to tell you how pleased I am that you're part of the Walsh tribute. They're lucky to have you.
Thanks for all the thoughts and foot vibes.
The preview for John Cusack's new film GRACE IS GONE thoroughly pissed me off by providing too, too much information. Why not simply call the film GRACE IS DEAD? What do these asshole trailer assemblers think?
...The meeting time had been changed due to a scheduling conflict that Mr. Tune had, and he actually "apologized" to me for the mix up. And, I swear, I've met him briefly a few times, and each time I see him I still can't believe he's that tall. ...Well, yeah, he's six foot six and a half, which is sorta tall. But I've met taller.
Back from seeing the movie adaptation of The Jane Austen Book Club, which was very true to the book and which I liked very much. One of my book group girlfriends, a retired physician, showed up and I suspect everybody else was involved with family, yard work, or political campaigning. By the time the movie was over, DH Richard was home from Cincinnati, so I picked up carry-out fried chicken and sides and we've just had a nice dinner together.
You can blame the studio for that, not the asshole trailer assemblers.
BK, you can have that by email tomorrow morning when I get in to work.
Who and how does one decide what info should go into a trailer? I like them fun and exciting but not too informed. I feel in some I get a capsualization of the final print.
And The Song of The Day IS : I HAVE DREAMED
I would no more see a movie called THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB than I would see a movie called THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS.
LOL, DR JRand! That was sort of the reaction of my DH Richard.
I have a question for anyone who might know about SAVING GRACE.
Has the final show of Season one aired yet on TNT? After our last episode we got a rather mysterious note at the bottom of the screen. It said the last 4 episodes would air starting dec 31st. But until then they would re-air Season 1. Very odd.
Jose, I love hearing the details about the Walsh tribute, even though I wasn't familiar with him. It's a great honor and they obviously think very highly of you to ask you to be on board. You always have such great, descriptive posts about your adventures!

I'm back from a good day in Toyland and GONE BABY GONE, which I liked very much and a bleaker film I haven't seen in some time. My friend Matthew lived in Dorchester for a while - when I visited him and his girlfriend Myra they lived in Back Bay - and he said the accents were dead on. The cast was quite wonderful and the mystery quite involved and heartbreaking. The preview for John Cusack's new film GRACE IS GONE thoroughly pissed me off by providing too, too much information. I wonder how many people's VCRs (and other electronics) automatically changed the time by mistake. :(
I just checked the temp for Halloween here and it is supposed to be a high of 14 C for the day (that's high 55s i guess). So that could be pretty decent. I hate it when it's rainy or really cold.
I think they should have canceled it after Episode 1!
Aw, Thank You very much - and to everyone else who's wished me well. I just hope I don't let the "stars get in my eyes".

RE: SAVING GRACE.
It's not my favorite show by any means. But there are a few interesting characters. And the storylines usually keep my attention. It just happens it started here during the summer.
Still no CLOSER for us this season, which really sucks. The station that was showing it turned to an E chanel. ANd the W (women's channel) that also shows it is only on season 2! :(

i remember Arnold complain, rightfully so, about the trailer for TERMINATOR 2. more than any trailer i can recall, that one gave away far too much info and ruined the suspense of the opening chase scene.
Excuse Me. I Did Not Complain!!
DR Cillaliz - Hmm... Is the grill pan you have cast iron? If so, has/is it already seasoned? If not, well... Next time... semi-generously oil the pan before putting on the heat. And then let it heat up over medium-low heat for a few minutes before turning it up to medium/medium-high. And, yes, it should smoke a little. Then just to be safe, I would place a little more oil in the pan.
Now, if your pan is not cast iron, well... The general rule - which I remember from Jeff Smith, The Frugal Gourmet - is "Hot Pan, Cold Oil - Food Won't Stick". Let the pan heat up first, then put the oil in.
As for "the turning", well... I'm guessing the sugar from the applesauce and maple syrup probably contributed to your sticking problem. Otherwise, once enough of a crust has formed on the burger, it should more or less release on it's own - well, with a little bit of help. I would also lower the heat a little bit - turkey meat, especially when ground, requires gentler handling than beef does. But then again...
Stick Happens. ;D
...And there's also a chance that you should have waited another minute or two before flipping.
*I have a favorite turkey burger recipe that incorporates bits of cheese in it - talk about a potentially sticky situation. I've found that chilling the burgers for a bit after forming them helps them to stay together better on the grill. -And the "chill" aids the searing too.
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some rather ugly things going on tonight. Yes, the surface was kind of snappy, but I felt very uncomfortable watching the neighbors be so judgemental.

DR Jose, this new project sounds like it will be loads of fun for you, and quite a thrill! Aren't you glad you moved to NYC!!!!
And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
DR Der Bruce I have seen plenty of Cruising in stores around salem.
Only in profile, IMHO, from front-on, I didn't think he looked that great. . .
From mlop (a friend of FJL) over on All That Chat:
I just got word that the memorial for Thommie Walsh will not be on the 16th of November from a friend of his. As soon as I find out the new date, I will post it.
Maryann
What say, Jose?
Your foot is always in my thoughts, DR FJL.
Yes, I still feel humbled to have been asked to come aboard this "adventure". And after hearing the potential line-up of people coming in to honor Thommie - and for whom I'll be playing for, well... I really do feel humbled... And excited... And a little scared. Since no one has really been confirmed, I really can't say anything right now, but even if just one of the people mentioned today happens to come in, well... :) :) :)
Just pulling up Thommie Walsh's listing on the IBDB brings up a ton of "possibilities", and that does not include the people who's cabaret acts he directed, the off-Broadway and regional shows he worked on, etc., etc., etc. It looks like I'm in for quite a "historic" adventure over the next couple of weeks.
What are the obvious reasons?

Callie is most upset with me now and doesn't really want anything to do with me. She hasn't eaten today and I think maybe her stomach is upset from the medicine. So I'm not going to give her any tonight. Perhaps that will give her some time to let things settle down a little
I also did some research and looked at her chart from the vet. It says they gave her phosphate enemas the last time she was there. Everything I read says those can be fatal in cats. I am very worried and will call the new vet tomorrow to see what I can find out about it.
