Title: THE KIND OF SEPTEMBER
Post by: bk on September 01, 2006, 08:24:30 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you couldn't post, now you can post, and therefore it is time to post until the cows come home - they're trying to remember the kind of September but they still think it's August because they kept getting too many connections.  Let's make up for lost time, shall we?  Let's put on rouge and lipstick and eyeliner for lost time, shall we?

My hot water heater has been drained and removed.  The little closet in my bathroom where it has been is quite wet on the floor :P and actually has been for quite a long time!  The guy said that there's a little dent in the floor.  I don't know if that means that the floor underneath is definitely damaged or just possibly damaged, but at least getting the tank out was easy.

Oh!  I nearly forgot:

CD Player:  GREY GARDENS
DVD Player: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (Season 3)
iPOD Video:  LOST, Season 2 Finale (I am hopelessly addicted to this show)

I had literally just gotten out of the shower and was drying myself off when the doorbell rang! :o I was able to dry and dress quickly and then the hot water heater guy got started fairly quickly.  The new tank is already in place.

Got an e-mail this morning from someone who PREordered Simply Sondheim, asking about the status of his order made three days ago.  I bit my tongue and simply responded and suggested he look at the order page where it is clearly stated that the release date is October 3rd and that preorders will ship two weeks prior to that, which, in this case, it absolutely will.  In every press release or announcement, that is also stated.

DR jhvw - I have found the best way to enjoy QAF is while doing something else.  Great promise never fulfilled - and really bad acting to match the REALLY bad and illogical scripts.  Can you believe Gale Harrold is starring in a new series this fall?

I think some folks get disturbed because their credit cards are charged immediately (or money is deducted from their paypal account), but that too is explained on the site (there's no other way to do it with paypal) and it's also explained that preorders are how small companies exist.

Great news about BRAIN....and even more excited about the "unannounced" news - wonder wonder wonder what it could be?

Well TOMORROW you can tell Alice (aka Alicia) that the DePauw Tigers will be playing Wabash next weekend, if she wants to make a visit.  They're playing for the Monon Bell....  Of course as a DePauw alumnus, I must root for my Tigers.

New York's NBC station has not been broadcasting the dreadful STARTING OVER and broadcasting infomercials instead:  this week I've had an hour of Time/Life romantic listening, and today's financial education.  I can't wait to finish lunch and head to the NYPL.

I watched Wednesday's PROJECT RUNWAY; Jeffrey is to Angela as I am to Sally Mayes.

I see in the IMDB ad for THE WICKER MAN that the child Nicholas Cage is looking for is the daughter of a former lover?  Doesn't that shoot down the presmise of the original film about sacrificing a virgin to the gods?  Another must-miss remake!

A change of mind time!

I saw the stage production of RENT in LA and was totally under-whelmed - it seemed just so much noise; consequently I had no interest in seeing the movie.

Well, Starz ran a HDTV version of the movie which I recorded on my DVR. Imagine my surprise -I really enjoyed it! Chris Columbus did a wonderful job of never forgetting that the songs were central to the experience. He opened up the action which added to the emotional impact, and the carefully-dictioned musical numbers moved the story along.

PS I'd like to see Columbus get the Les Miz movie gig!

Tonight I'm going to Artsplash! It's an annual outdoor Art festival. New this year is the Friday night event. The artists will all be there, but the kids area isn't open.  So those of us who want to look at and/or purchase art don't have to deal with the kids.   I like that a lot.

I may go back tomorrow to see Ben Baron’s Klezmer  & Dixieland Ensemble. I can't fathom the two styles by the same band, so I may just have to check it out.

Or like the people who go onto our library website, place reserves on books that are at one location to be picked up at another location, then drive to the pick-up point and expect the books to be there.  They get very indignant when we tell them that, on those automated reserves, nothing happens until the start of the next business day.

I have a glorious 4-day weekend ahead of me, because Monday is my regular day off, so I get Tuesday, too.  Tonight after work I'm driving to Tiffin, OH, for a planning meeting for the April, 2007, AAUW/Ohio conference.  Watch for me here online tonight, if I can get the iBook to work - I'm traveling solo with it for the first time!  I'll be back home Saturday evening.

Well it's raining around here, and Fletcher has decided to do his "piddly things" inside >:(

The other four, on the other hand, sallied forth when the wind blow open the front door. By the time I gathered up car keys, leashes and bicuits to go on a round up, they had had enough of Ernesto and came trotting back on in.

The most irritating thing is that because I had to take Woody to work, I was they last one thru the door when I returned - so I can't blame it on him for leaving it unlatched.

Speaking of THE WICKER MAN, I grabbed the 2-DVD set when it came out.  It's OP, and now I see that Anchor Bay is only selling the inferior 88-minute print minus the 11 minutes of the director's cut.  A lot of logic got misplaced in those 11 minutes!

I did. Really enjoyed it - which was a total surprise.  An old-fashioned (in the best sense) yarn, beautifully told and acted. I had such a great time! Came out of the theater smiling. And the audience - at a regular performance - applauded at the end. I think this will be a word-of-mouth sleeper hit.

Hi, Ginny!  Well...a decision has been made.  I'm going to accept the seller's "offer" of her paying the closing costs and I'll pay the full asking price.  It's in the perfect location and it has a garage and a few other things that add up to a deal that I probably can't beat. :)

So...unless my financing is a total bust, I'm going to buy a condo!  But I won't be moving just yet, so go ahead and send to my current address whatever you're going to send me! ;D Thanks in advance!!

"All Fall Down" was not among the movies selected in the poll at amazon.com for WB to release.  While "Best Foot Forward" will be among the first two...we'll get no "All Fall Down" for a while.

BUT..."Gymkata", one of the great BOMBS of all time...THAT made the cut.

Can anyone begin to guess/imagine/explain WHY?

I started my afternoon of viewing with the Edit Head featurette on the TO CATCH A THIEF DVD. If I had watched it before, I didn't remember it at all. Supposedly it's just about her Paramount career (which amount to the greatest chunk of her professional career anyway), but it really only scratched the surface. She really deserves a lengthy documentary about her career with both positives and negatives. The doc on the DVD was mostly a puff piece. Bob Mackie admitted she wasn't the best Hollywood designer, but that was the extent of the objectivity in the piece.

Yes, that really made me mad, too. While I was delighted about BEST FOOT FORWARD and PRESENTING LILY MARS, I was unhappy over ALL FALL DOWN not making the cut. Doesn't mean it won't be released. Just not right away.

As for GYMKATA, I suspect there are folks who adore it just like people adore other really rotten movies. I just don't want to know them! (Now, if Mitch Gaylord had starred instead of Kurt THomas, I might be a fan!  :D )

I am going to see THE ILLUSIONIST once TKAM gets open.

I have been remiss in saying that the information that DR GINNY sent me has been passed around, discussed, and enjoyed by the cast and staff.

AND the copy of the book that DR CILLALIZ had autographed by Ms. Mary Badham (Scout) to Putnam County Playhouse has a prominent spot in the lobby display case.

Hold your hats and hallelujah, I have just completed watching the DR MBARNUM recommended MUNECOS INFERNALES.

It is a frightening movie that is very interesting in subject and execution.  it is truly the work of a demented creative staff.  I have NOT watched the American K. Gordon Murray version yet.

What is really unusual is that an ACTRESS is top billed and is the protaganist in the story.  She does NOT defer to her fiance - whom she is reluctant to marry at all.  She is the expert in voodoo, ancient rituals, black magic, AND zombies....but I will not reveal the ending.

This role is played by an actress with my new favorite celluloid moniker:
Elvira Quintana.  She is stunningly beautiful.  She had been a store clerk working to pay for acting lessons, had gotten a few small parts in films....then DANCE TEN; LOOKS THREE - she got her nose fixed and silicone injections and became an ESTRELLA in her next movie.

The superstructure is indeed impressive - and I don't know HOW they painted those eyebrows on!  Sadly Elvira passed away in 1968 at age 33 from complications of those silicone injections.

Oh...did I tell you that midgets play the dolls when they go on their murderous rampages....sent by the Sorcerer whose office has a disco ball.  And that there is a car that has the front/headlights of a 1959 Dodge and the trunk/tail lights of a 1959 Plymouth?

BER-SERK!!!  And high recommended.  Thanks, DR MBARNUM. 8)

I'm going to accept the seller's "offer" of her paying the closing costs and I'll pay the full asking price.

If it's what you want, you were wise to make the deal! Many a good deal is lost by a buyer trying to wring a few extra concessions from a seller.

Oyez! Oyez!

A major exhibition of Disney art, at least 70% of it never seen before, is about to start in Paris.

IL ÉTAIT UNE FOIS WALT DISNEY, Aux sources de l'art des studios Disney will open at Galeries nationales du Grand Palais Paris on September 16, 2006 and will last until January 15, 2007. It will then travel to Museum of Modern Art Montreal where it will open on March 8, 2007 and close on June 24, 2007. There are rumors that it might then travel to other major museums around the world.

Make no mistake, this is a multi-million dollars exhibition taking place at a museum in Paris that is almost as important as Le Louvre. I do not recall that Disney art was ever exposed in such a prestigious venue in France in the past.

The basis for the concept of the exhibition is Robin Allan's book Disney and Europe that explores the European artists and European works that influenced Disney movies until The Jungle Book.

C'est magnifique, non?!

This did NOT prevent der B from teasingly trying to con me into thinking that I was the guilty party.  Unfortunately for him, I remembered too quickly that it was he, not I, that had been the last one out of the house when we left for the drive to work.

I was disappointed that erika won pov since she is grating on my last nerve.

I was happy janelle won hoh. But what the heck was up with them letting her chat with will for so long. I wish that hadn't happened.

Anyhow the new hoh has already been named (won't name it here). BUt i think whoever wins pov will control the game. Should be interesting.

Speaking of which, this in the news section over at IMDB:

Quote
L. Brent Bozell's Parents Television Council, which has spearheaded the campaign against indecent language on television, has demanded that the FCC fine NBC for not censoring the comments by actresses Helen Mirren and Calista Flockhart during Sunday's Primetime Emmy Awards telecast. Both had expressed concerns about falling "tits over ass" as they came up the stairs. Calling the common British colloquialism "vulgar and obscene," Bozell said Thursday, "It is utterly irresponsible and atrocious for NBC to air this vulgar language during the safe harbor time [before 10:00 p.m.] when millions of children were in the viewing audience." The phrase was not bleeped during the live broadcast in the East and Midwest nor on the delayed broadcast in the West. While a common Britishism, it is sometimes abbreviated as TOA in polite company, as in, "I got out of the taxi and fell TOA on the slippery street."

If you ask me, PTC is a bunch of boobies!  I hope their campaign goes bust!

Gee, I'm so dull that I thought you were.... serious!!

 ;)

I have heard and read so many times that "the French are the ones who find Jerry Lewis funny" that i'm kind of irritated by it, just because one French critic, Mr Benayoun (May he rest in peace!), raved about Mr Lewis and wrote extensively about him over the years!
That's where it all started and of course it has become a cliché in the US that "the French love Jerry Lewis"... meaning... "shows you what they know about comedy!"

Yes. I worked in the Central Court Building when I clerked for Judge Martone, and I had court in both the East and Central Court buildings when I was a public defender.  There is also the Old Court Building  ( or do they call it the Old Courthouse?)  They filmed a movie there while I was in AZ, can't remember the name of it.  But I had a few cases in that building as well.

May I recommend this radio show?:

The week of June 29, 2006, John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey's Radio Deluxe program was a Salute to Rosemary Clooney. They were joined by John Oddo and Deborah Grace Winer. You can listen to the entire program, by downloading it here.

Well, I must get some sleep.  I'm quite tired.  I did buy a really fun trio of pictures etched into slate at Art Splash. They are called groovin on life or something like that. Each slate has a stylized woman dancing or doing acrobatics and when I look at it I just have to smile.   I'm going to try to figure out where to hang it tomorrow. If I get it on the wall I'll take a photo.

Thank you very much TCB, Cillaliz and Jane! ;D

I got the impression that the seller is getting antzy to make sure that I can actually get a loan, so it had better all work out!  And Jane, yes, this was the one that the seller had actually un-listed. :P And now, they actually have to re-list it so that I can officially make an offer to buy it.  Whatever. ::)

We watched GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK when we got back home. My friend has never used the HDMI jack in his HDTV, so I brought one of the upconverting players I have here, and we plugged it in very quickly, got it up and running, and enjoyed the movie. They had never seen it. I've seen it probably half a dozen times and never tire of it. A really first-rate film.

So he could see some color films upconverted, we next put in THE PRODUCERS and watched about five numbers: "Along Came Bialy," "Keep it Gay," "Springtime for Hitler," "Betrayed" and the audition sequence. John and I saw the original cast on Broadway the summer after THE PRODUCERS opened, so there wasn't the surprise of its music and lyrics for him. He seemed to like it OK, but he thought it worked better on stage (I agree completely).

And we finished up with the opening sequence of his favorite James Bond movie apart from any Connery ones - TOMORROW NEVER DIES. The surround is stunning on this sequence, but neither he nor I saw much improvement in the image upconverted with this particular DVD.

When last I left you, The Vixter and I were about to set off to meet DR WFO and drive to NYC.

Well the picking up of WFO went well but an accident on the LIE led to a detour that turned a 40 minute trip into a 1 hour and 40 minute trip, but the company was good and we had given ourselves several hours of free time before the show so no problem there.
Title: Re:THE KIND OF SEPTEMBER
Post by: vixmom on September 01, 2006, 09:20:26 PM
I had a coupon for $10 all day parking at a very convenient indoor parking garage and we brought the car there... dragged  poor and incredibly patient DR WFO through the mandatory American Girl Place visit....  and then set off to the theatre to see the Fatasticks.

F9irst of all our seats were amazing...I had purchased them on the internet and there was no seating chart  but I figured Row A center orchestra would be good... I also figured it would be located somewhere behind rows AA - ZZ... but NO!! It was dead center inthe first row, we were actually on the stage and had to keep our feet well tucked under  to ensdure that no actors would be tripped up.

Everyone in the cast was absoutely wonderful.  Before the show I asked the Vixter if she would like me to buy her a T shirt...

"Well, lets see how the show is first.." she replied

At intermission she asked "Please, please may I have a shirt? And are they selling the CD?!" (not yet but soon we found out)

Back in the lobby we found the well beloved DR Elmore and his friend Andy and much hugging ensued.

I concur with Elmore that this production of the Fantasticks is not to be missed.

After the show Elmnmore very kindly introduced us to the mutlit-talented Mr. Tom Jones who signed the Vixter's program for her.

and then we were off, the five of us to the apartment of the most gracious hosts DR FJL and his Skip

We  got back tothe car park I handed the man my ticket and the coupon, he drove up in my car , we got in and then I noticed a
curious thing... although the car was running, there was no key in my ignition.

Now I still do not know how they managed to start the car, and more interestingly, unlock the steering column, without the key but manage it they did.

It took an hour of calm but inisistent talking to convince them that I did indeed have a key when I arrived and left theme the car and that I had no intention of leaving without a key.  Unfortunately, my key was not to be found. Finally, after I insisted they call the manager at home, WFO began taking down everyon'es name in hois lttle notebook and we very pointedly wrote down the license number of the parking garage and the number of the NYC department in charge of such estrablishments they had a long talk with someone on the phone, and then came out with a redund of my parking charge, the new that a locksmith had been called to  make a new key anfd an offer to buy us a meal while we waited.

We went over to the next block and had some little snacks (there was not room for much after the feast at the Fred and Skips!!) and when we wandered back, by now quite tired at nearly midnight the locksmith was just finishing up and putting away his tools.

We handed our diner receipt to the parking lot attendenant and he reimbursed us for our expense and we were finally off - arriving home in the early hours of the morning.

The local colleges are rebelling against the local mindset and pushing the 'local' envelipe and doing more liberal and open minded plays.  I am glad they are doing plays with a message. Matter of fact, a master student last spring did "Vagina Monologues" and the local churches were in an uproar. Then it was pointed out that there was a male version called "Penis Monologues." Of course they proceeded to condemn all the creative arts and condemn them  to a less than pleasant place.

Oddly these are the same ones who have kids that run wild and wreak havoc. Yet complain that there is nothing for their children to do and go on missions to ban books and movies from schools and libraries.

There is a group right now in Fargo who want to remove all Grisham novels and Harry Potter books from local libraries.

I shake my head at them with borderline amusement.
