Topic of the Day:  I don't think I can help with diet "tricks."  The only time that I tried to lose weight (and I did successfully...at first) was with this program that contracted through Group Health in Seattle.  They had two people drive down to Olympia once a week to run the program and it was all meal replacements.  I really liked it, but the company (not GH) got bought by another company.  That company stopped the program in Olympia because there weren't enough people for them...it's all about the money. >:( So I gained back almost all of the weight that I lost. :P

moderate exercise - walking a couple of k each day.

Change the lifestyle approach to eating!

The ironic thing about the LA TIMES "quotegate" is that now bk and that nasty piece of work known as westcoastdrama are intextricably linked.  westcoastdrama was the individual that was so disdainful and critical of the Brain during NYMF last summer.

The Dangers of Auto-Replace
In addition to blocking traffic from websites they don’t like, it looks like the web-geniuses behind the American Family Association’s OneNewsNow site have a few other tricks up their sleeves, such as automatically replacing any use of the word “gay” with the word “homosexual” in any of the AP stories they run … leading to instances in which proper names are reformatted to meet their ridiculous standard, such as this article about sprinter Tyson Gay winning the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in which he is renamed “Tyson Homosexual”:

THE BLEAT (http://lileks.com/bleats/archive/08/0608/063008.html)

Quote
...
It would mean nothing if we hadn’t gotten to know the characters. But how did we get to know them? In silent-movie fashion, through their actions and expressions. Most the dialogue between Wall-E and Eve consists of the characters calling each other’s name. (Side note: we’d all seen the previews, and we’d all heard the strange strangled voice of Wall-E saying his name; turns out that’s the moment when he introduces himself to this AWESOME BABE, and even though you’d heard it a dozen times already, it’s suddenly different, guileless and hopeful and gawky.) If there’s a moment when Eve becomes vulnerable – which puts her at Wall-E’s level, or perhaps a bit below it, since Wall-E has been aware of his vulnerability since the start  - it’s the scene before the dance.

The scene wouldn’t have meant anything without the story that preceeded it.

Side note: Pixar’s gift for deft, precise, economical character delineation might have hit its apogee with Eve. It’s all in the tilt of the head and the shape of the eyes – the latter defined by ten blue lines. At first they have two or three shapes; by the end they’ve adopted the shape of Wall-E’s own eyes, indicating her own progression towards awareness and empathy. She is a hard plastic cipher at the beginning; by the end, she is Princess Charming. Literally. (That’s another Disney throwback reference I haven’t seen anyone else note.) Anyway: click VIDEOS and scroll down to Space Walk.
...

And interesting read for animation fans.

Good morning, all! Back to Ms Criswell's orchestra parts, and that's how I will spend all of today and perhaps most of tomorrow.

"New" musicals: too much sturm und drang over an adjective. The only things this debate is good for are publicity, hostility, and needless angst. The word "new" implies exactly what it is to an audience. If a show has received no major production, no subsequent tour, no film and/or Zadan-Meron butchershop job for television, chances are the only persons it isn't new to are the writers. The David Evans-Winnie Holzman musical AMATEURS had a major full-scale production at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park several years before it ended up at the Promenade as BIRDS OF PARADISE, so I see no problem wth calling THE TIMES a new show.

Look at this photo: besides looking like a bad Irish play, does this photo say anything about dieting tips/tricks????

re: diet tricks

I think exercise is important. So for BK, jogging will help A LOT.

I've tried to cut back a lot on carbs (breads, pasta, rice ...). They make it so easy to pack on the pounds.

And cut out sweets.

Lots of vegetables and fruits. Although i think i would say in the beginning not to eat that many fruits a day because some have a lot of carbs.

I think eating only one meal a day is not good for a person's system at all.

I'm not a huge breakfast person though (i just don't get hungry in the morning). But i try to have a snack of fruit at least in the morning.

And 2 medium meals. And one or 2 snacks.

And i would say (re: losing weight) to try to stay away from a lot of processed and packaged foods. Try to eat things that are fresh.

And look at the labels on all sauces and dressings. Most of them are full of sugar!

I'll be spending most of the afternoon and early evening on SUPERHERO MOVIE, another in the endless stream of movie parodies by David Zucker and company. I expect the film will be a catch-all of barbs at all the superhero tentpole films that dominate every summer season, but even at their weakest, there usually are a few gags that work, so it should be a moderately pleasant 82 minutes.

BK, I am very sorry about your problems with that journalist. Things like that give writers a bad name.

I have had a few actors and actresses who refuse to do interviews for the simple fact that in the past they have been misquoted or  had something printed that was told to the journalist "off the record."

It is frustrating for me, because I am always very careful when I interview someone. I make certain that the interviewee is happy with the draft of the story before I ever send it to the publisher.

Good Morning!

TOD: I haven't tried to many diets (obviously) but at this point in my life, apparently hormonal changes have taken effect and I've been packing on pounds at a frightening rate.

A friend of mine joined Weight Watchers last month and encouraged me to go, so I signed up last Saturday. So far I've been able to stick with it )all of 4 days!) and now I'm ready to join a gym. (My old one in Marietta is too far away.) I normally would not even mention this because I wouldn't want anyone to know if I "failed", but with all the great success stories I've heard here, it gives me inspiration and maybe it will put a little more pressure on me not to give up.

The closest gym to me is Curves. I haven't checked it out yet but I bought some cross-training shoes last night, so that's a start!

I realize that it's very easy to follow a diet on my own. Greg will be back from traveling on Thursday (he's actually home now but our scheudles won't meash for dinner) and then I'll have to start figuring out how to make it work for both of us. He likes to work outdoors until it gets dark and then go out to eat, which means dinner after 9. But I'll figure it out.

Personally I find nothing in the pull-quote of BK's that anyone could interpret as being critical.

Like Amy, I found that somewhere in my early to mid-40s my metabolism just changed radically and before I knew it, I was pretty overweight.  I've spent the past few years (that's right, FEW years ;) ) learning to readjust.  I think it boils down to common sense--count your calories, count your fat and carbohydrate grams, and make sure to get some exercise each and every day.

She was a very nice lady, but clearly was trying to create drama where there was none.  Someone at the Times let one e-mail from this westcoastdrama person make them think there was a story here.  While I differ with elmore about calling The Times a "new" musical, my point was that given the way shows gestate for years and years and years and just keep doing recycled readings and workshops, what's "new" - on the phone she tried to get me to say that the Brain wasn't a new musical, but I simply told her that in today's world it absolutely was, what with ONE reading, then two productions within a year.  It's all semantics over the word "new" and you can't make a mountain out of that particular molehill.  And then we find out that the Times wouldn't cover the Festival because the Festival didn't commission new works.  And when I think back on the Times review of our show, they mention the other productions, so the Times also has some weird agenda.  I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

I am also dealing with inaccuracies in our local paper today. They're also miscalculating something to create a little drama. Although I like the drama they are creating, (involving certain developers) I want them to have the facts straight so the whole story doesn't seem invalid.

TOD - I am trying not to think about what 6 weeks of sitting around with my foot propped up will do to my weight.  And any thoughts I'd had of eating a lot of healthy salads went out the window with the dietary restrictions attached to the blood thinner pills I'm taking daily (for probably the next 6 months)  ::)

my DH and I also tried something last year where pre-packed fresh meals were delivered. It was expensive but not as expensive as eating in restaurants every night (we rarely cook) but the food ended up arriving earlier and earlier and was not packed with fully frozen ice packs so some of it would be spoiled in the morning. They never improved despite several phone calls from us to we discontinued it. Plus, they had a lot of things like white bread and rice. They could have done better as far as making it healthier.

I think yesterday's meals were interesting for me, in that I ate pretty consistently, but all low-cal stuff.

Two ears of corn with two pats of butter, app. 350 calories.  Shrimp and crab claws with cocktail sauce - app. 200 calories.  Melon balls with a little Cool Whip on top - app. 200 calories.  One fruit popsicle - 80 calories.  Five thin slices of Oscar Mayer ham - 45 calories.  One granola bar - 100 calories.  Total calorie intake: 975.  If I can't lose weight on 975 calories, then I don't know what.  Especially after a two-mile jog.   Normally, if I'm exercising, I can lose weight eating anything under 1500 calories.  Counting calories has always been the easiest and most successful way for me to lose weight.  The other successful way is to count fat grams along with the calories, and to eat under 20 fat grams a day, which I think I did yesterday.

I wasn't mis-quoted, the quote was simply used without the context in which it was being said.  I was, in fact, laughing about the fact that with the way that musicals must play this endless game that there aren't really any 'new' musicals.  I also mentioned NYMF's Roller Derby, the "new" musical that was thirty years old.

A sad day for me.

Because of my work schedule, which includes logging off and getting into the shower the moment I finish writing this, I will not be going to the Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market today.

Boo and hiss.

This means der Brucer and I will not have any fresh and wonderful tomatoes to eat this week.

Boo and hiss again.

I will be having stern words about this with Stacey, the supervisor of the cashiers, and must remind her that I will not be at all happy with her if she pulls the same stunt next week.

OK, one more quick post:

BK, I don't think it is possible to get great corn in the Los Angeles area.  It doesn't grow near Los Angeles, as I recall.  So it won't be as fresh as you'd like.

However, you might check out the farmers markets, which I hope could prove me wrong.  If you are trying to watch your calories, great veggies are probably your best bet, and the farmer's markets are your best bet for finding great veggies.

By which I mean the ones that show up on a weekly basis at various spots around town.  They're great for people watching, too.

Saturday, July 5, 2:00 PM

"The case of two Italian-born anarchists, executed for a murder they  almost surely didn't commit, remains the definitive, scary myth of the  promise of America snuffed by fear and loathing.  It's cleansing to  see the facts laid out with intimacy and rigor, and the film earns the  comparison it makes to the squelching of due process for some of  today's terror suspects."  Entertainment Weekly  (with an "A" rating!)

"Absolutely engrossing.  Masterfully revives the past." - Chicago

The time that I was in the meal-replacement weight-loss program, we counted calories and had charts to figure how many calories we burned when we exercised, based on our weight.  It was quite accurate, too.  Anyway, we were told that women should eat 10 calories per day for every pound of weight that you want to weigh.  Meaning, if a woman wants to weigh 100 pounds, she should eat about 1000 calories a day.  125 pounds...1250 calories, etc.  For men, it's 12 calories per pound of weight that you want to weigh.  And if you exercise, you can eat extra calories to make up for the calories that you burn, to maintain that ratio.  The program was very insistent that we did not eat less than 1000 calories at all, so that they wouldn't have to do medical testing.  If you go below that (like in OptiFast, where you're limited to something like 800 calories a day...or 530 calories PER DAY when my friend Margo did it in the 1980s), they need to make sure that your body doesn't go into starvation mode and is getting enough food for you to be able to lose weight.  It's truly a science.

Harvard has come up with a food pyramid that makes the most sense:

http://www.fitnessintraining.com/harvardfoodpyramid.htm

Notice how brown rice (a whole grain) is at the very bottom of the pyramid and white rice is at the very top. So, don't try to cut out all carbs, just the bad ones. I don't like to cook so I have a couple brown rice recipes where I make a big batch and feed off it for a week. I'll try to remember to post the recipes tomorrow. Pineapple pie is definitely not part of a nutritionally balanced diet!

Also, I lost 30 pounds after I got my dog. It forced me to walk twice a day and because she kept begging me for my food, I simply stopped eating dinner. Now, I eat a pineapple, mango, and papiya mix for dinner because the dog is not very excited by fruit. Dog enthusiasts would tell me I should train my dog not to beg, but it's easier to just not eat meat for dinner.

Melon is about 60 calories per cup. Bruce, as I recall, you lost quite a bit of weight before, so whatever worked for you then should work for you now. Physically, it's just a matter of burning more calories than you take in. Psychologically, it's just a matter of coming up with a diet that you can live with so you don't feel like you're suffering all the time, otherwise you won't be able to stay on that diet. For people who love meat, don't try be a vegetarian, just eat more fish and white meat chicken and less beef or pork. And for people who love pasta, don't go on a high-protein diet, just don't drown your pasta in a high-fat sauce - stick with marinara instead of alfredo. And don't overstuff yourself. When you're pleasantly full, stop eating immediately.

Next, I finished THE SWORD IN THE STONE which I had started last night. This is the old Gold Collection DVD. I didn't get the new one, and from all accounts, Disney used the exact same transfer. It looked mostly fine on my equipment (though there were some odd color fluctuations at the bottom of the frame early in the movie.)

Next, I watched SUPERHERO MOVIE. Pretty standard David Zucker stuff with too great a reliance on pratfalls and fart jokes, but there certainly were some parts that did make me laugh, and everyone in the film keeps a straight face amid all the lunacy. It's mostly a rip of SPIDER-MAN though X-MEN and BATMAN and FANTASTIC FOUR come in for a bit of ribbing. I think there were rich mines of material ripe for spoofing that they missed, however.

There is one moment, however, that's fall on the floor funny. Actor Miles Fisher does about a minute or so of a dead-on Tom Cruise impersonation, and it was a scream (there's more in the bonus scenes, too.) My favorite part of the movie by far.

I think you could do it by only ordering it one system.

And then reordering when you wanted.

For example here they sell this on the shopping channel. And you buy one order of 4 weeks. Then next month or whenever you could order another set.

I'm not saying you want to do this again. But if someone did i'll bet you could also talk to someone when ordering and explain your dilmemna. And they would probably arrange it so that you only paid once per month.

Although i didn't realize that people did this for so long!

It's what they call "soft" canned food.  It's in microwaveable trays, like frozen foods, but they're completely sealed and fully cooked.  They don't need to be heated up.  You can eat them at room temperature if you need to...like during a power failure.  However, they don't really look "delicious" in real life.  They just look like canned food.  And they don't taste delicious, either.  They're not bad, but they're definitely NOT "delicious." ;)

I usually enjoy Wednesdays, but the jury is still out on today (the work day part, that is).

Nothing heavy, but nothing "heady", either.  We are still in that "rolling-over-into-the-new-fiscal-year" mode....invoices are piling up....and people are trying to toss little sweat grenades at me, such as "Ron, can you get this one paid really fast?  When will the check go out on this one, Ron?  Can you make an exception with this one and pay them tomorrow?"

The only joy I get is telling them "No, No, and No!"  The County pays EVERYthing 30 days in arrears.  If I process an invoice today (I can't until Wednesday, actually, but for the sake of the example "today"), the County check won't go out until August 1.  Period.  End of story.  UNLESS special provisions were agreed upon BEFORE a purchase order was issued and that provision was worked into the purchase order.

That's more than any of you could possibly want to know, and probably not any of it, to be frank!  I understand that.  But I'm sharing it with you anyway.

That's my perverse nature.

;D

I think you could do it by only ordering it one system.

And then reordering when you wanted.

For example here they sell this on the shopping channel. And you buy one order of 4 weeks. Then next month or whenever you could order another set.

I'm not saying you want to do this again. But if someone did i'll bet you could also talk to someone when ordering and explain your dilmemna. And they would probably arrange it so that you only paid once per month.

Although i didn't realize that people did this for so long!

The program is set up so that you save a lot of money by buying on the standing order plan.  I didn't actually call to ask about changing the payment schedule, so maybe they really could do it, but looking very thoroughly around their website, I didn't see anything that indicated that option.

Here are some more Emmy semifinalists. First, here are the actresses vying for the five slots in Best Comedy Actress:

Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
Marcia Cross, Desperate Housewives
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies
Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives
Eva Longoria Parker, Desperate Housewives
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, New Adventures of Old Christine
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program

I don't care at all that Teri Hatcher was omitted from the list, but where in the world is Dana Delany? She was the best thing about the show this year, and her name is not here. Amazing! All of these other names seem worthy.

Next, here are the actors vying for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:

Naveen Andrews, Lost
Bruce Dern, Big Love
Christian Clemenson, Boston Legal
Ted Danson, Damages
Michael Emerson, Lost
Zeljko Ivanek, Damages
T.R. Knight, Grey's Anatomy
William Shatner, Boston Legal
John Slattery, Mad Men
Blair Underwood, In Treatment
Jake Weber, Medium

Isn't it THRILLING to see Jake Weber's name there!

BIG SURPRISE: last year's winner Terry O'Quinn for LOST is NOT in the list! That means that neither of last years Best Supporting Drama winners will be up this year (Katherine Heigl voluntarily took her name out of contention saying she didn't feel she had storylines this year worthy of being nominated.)

Very disappointed that my guys from THE CLOSER didn't make it. UNFAIR!

And finally, here are the semifinalists for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:

Jane Alexander, Tell Me You Love Me
Candice Bergen, Boston Legal
Rose Byrne, Damages
Jill Clayburgh, Dirty Sexy Money
Sharon Gless, Burn Notice
Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
S. Epatha Merkerson, Law & Order
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
Dianne Wiest, In Treatment
Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy

Some of these people seem to be here by reputation rather than for giving galvanizing performances this season. I'm thinking especially of Gless and Clayburgh, both of whom are fine but neither of whom are worthy of Emmy nominations for their work this year.

The super and his wife have been on vacation, and I just got a nasty visit frm their son to give me hell about recycling. I carried an Amazon.com box down to the basement earlier and threw it onto the floor near the trash bins, which I've done for the past year or longer, for two reasons: if I put it into hte bin for paper, it takes up a lot of room for someone else who might be tossing out a lot of magazines and papers and, secondly, I've done this for a long time with never a complaint. Now, I'm not saying I was in the right, and perhaps if the super or his wife had made a comment in the past, I would not have continued to do this.

So, I called my agent to complain, but I don't like getting myself into a feud with the super and his family!

JUST NOT SO!

From the very onset (June12 thread) I disussed, and posted clips, of the lack of certainty of the source - you even taunted me with 'What do you mean, "believe", aren't they sure?"  All detailed print media and cable news stories have noted that the CDC was still lacking definite proof of the source of contamination and that tomatoes were just the "likely" suspect. If you think the media never reported the "maybe" element, it must be because you just read headlines or listen to news-show teasers.

Not in California.  The fines are pretty stiff, too -- $20 for first offense PLUS a $55 administrative fee.

The fine can go as high as $200 on subsequent offenses.

Also in effect today, drivers under 18 may not use a cell phone in a car even with an earphone (i.e., hands free).

It really hasn't been all that bad.  The only "bad" part has been having to deal with performers who seem to not like performing.  Most of my notes after today's run-thru were, "Please smile! Please look like you know and like what you're doing!"  And it really is amazing just how much better someone seems when they actually look like they're having a good time.  *And they still don't get that when they are the one or two people not smiling, that our attention automatically goes to them.  A frown catches the eye in a sea of smiles.

Yes, the days have been long, but they've been very leisurely paced, and the "stager" I've been working with really knows her stuff, and is a great teacher.

Now if we could just have internet access at the rehearsal hall, well...

*Maybe I should make that a requirement for my next contract with them.  ;)

THEN, I'll have to start cleaning the inside of my place because my dad's two sisters are arriving on Saturday for a two-week (I think) visit and they want to see my new (to them) place.  AARRGGHH!!  I am such a procrastinator (as I've often said).  But like when I wrote papers in college, the oh-so-near deadline will help...I hope.

DR Ginny - Is there anything special about your diet over the next couple of weeks?  I'm just curious what foods you have to avoid, and what foods they encourage you eat.

DR Jose - as soon as they gave my first dose of Coumadin in the hospital they gave me the orange card that lists the dietary considerations:

-Avoid excessive amounts of foods high in vitamin K - broccoli, brussels sprouts, raw cucumber peel, endive, mustard greens, parsley, turnip greens, watercress, cabbage, spinach, kale, collards, and salads (that's pretty vague, huh?)

-No cranberry juice or cranberry products

-No alcohol

I suppose it could have been worse - it could have said no coffee or chocolate.

Salmonella probe expands beyond tomatoes
By Tiffany Hsu
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

July 2, 2008

Health officials are expanding their investigation beyond tomatoes and into other produce as they search for the source of a salmonella outbreak that now has sickened 869 people over nearly three months.

As reports of victims continue to grow across 36 states and Washington, D.C., long after many tomato producers finished harvesting, officials at the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a conference call Tuesday that they were recruiting more laboratories to help with the investigation.

They also said they would start looking at produce commonly served with the fruit, though they refused to specify what other items were suspected.

The most recent onset of infection was June 20, said Robert Tauxe of the CDC. At least 179 people have become ill, with cases stretching back as early as June 1.

Tomatoes are still the lead suspect, as 80% of victims reported eating the fruit, Tauxe said. "Tomatoes aren't off the hook," said David Acheson, associate commissioner for foods for the FDA. But the culprit's trail is convoluted and the pace of tracking "has been frustratingly slow," he said.

So, can you still eat cucumber "innards"?

Well, at least you can still eat the red, yellow and white vegetables..  -Although, "salads" - that could be quite all-encompassing.  :-\

Yeah, that's the one I thought was pretty vague.

It actually didn't say NOT to eat those things, just to eat them in extreme moderation and never to excess.  I guess the vitamin K interferes with the medication and throws off that INR reading.

Oy, I could have been very happy never having to learn any of this.

Diet tricks:

I try to eat little meals all day...

Limit portion sizes

watch my intake of carbs and maintain my protiens.

Exercise...

Read labels

Some individuals can use artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Equal, Xylitol in place of sugar. I use honey as a sweetener since I cannot use the above items.

I listened to the audio commentary on SUPERHERO MOVIE. There were three people present, but the director did most of the talking.

If you think the media never reported the "maybe" element, it must be because you just read headlines or listen to news-show teasers.

der Brucer

You are correct - I don't ever get beyond the screaming headlines and the reprehensibly over-dramatic teasers.  For such a "likely" suspect, they caused an awful lot of trouble and they are now admitting for no reason at all.  They may as well have chosen squash or cucumbers.

I watched a very interesting DVD earlier - probably won't report on it in the notes for obvious reasons, but I watched the UK college production of The Brain.  It was fun to see it - way too long for its own good (both act one and two were about ten minutes longer than they should have been, mostly due to slow scene changes and looooong pauses between lines).  Some of the performances were very good - the narrator/Professor, the Joyce (an black actress - excellent voice) - the Zubrick was sort of from Tim Curry-land from Rocky Horror, which was interesting.  The Brain was interesting, too - a little Benny Hillish, which isn't a bad thing at all.  They used the full band, so it sounded good.

Actually the tomato link is based on commonality - what one raw food-stuff did the majority of victims ingest. (Without even gathering data you could probably guess lettuce, tomato or spinach.) Unfortunately today's hyper-world demands answers, NOW. They want to fix the blame. Imagine the uproar if the scientists issued a candid Press Release saying "Beats us; we don't have a fershluganah clew - but we're working on it."  You really need to watch a press conference or two and see how the reporters "push" the experts to get good quotes.

Q. What caused this outbreak.
A. It could be one of many things; right now we're looking at raw tomatoes.

Q. So raw tomatoes are the killers?
A. Well, at the moment they seem the most likely candidate.

Q. Is it true that the tomatoes came from Mexico?
A. Well, we believe Mexico was the source of at least some of the product.

Q. Could terrorists have poisoned the fruit?
A. We have no evidence to suggest terrorist involvement.

Q. Can you state for a certainty that terrorists were not involved.
A. Well, no.

Q. Should we all stop eating tomatoes.
A. We still haven't fixed to source with any certainty.

Q. But if tomatoes are the cause, would not eating tomatoes help avoid sickness.
A. Well, yes.

My reasons are personal due to experiences I had there and they are not something I want to put on a public forum. They were not pleasant and I did not desever the humiliation I got from Walmart employees. When I filed a complaint I received additional humiliation from the management.

This happened more than once. The first time I let it slide and the second time no. I did file and they made the entire experience humiliating.
