And Kritzerland has announced the second edition of Follies, a one-time only repressing of 1000 units, available now and ready to ship.  I'd recommend it as a wonderful Christmas gift.

First post!  Hoo and Ray!!

No other news to report except everyone is talking about the hurricane.  If it is to come, I hope it does some good and we get a day or two off from work out of it.

Vibes to all!

Good morning, all! I am almost back to NYC tie: I went to bed at 9:00 pm, hoping o be awakened by the alarm at 6:30. Well, it 5:00am, I was wide awake, so I got out ofbed, took the soxks, underwear and t-shirts down to the laundry in the basement. At 7, I'll take the shirts, trousers, rugs, whatever's invthe hamper from before I left down to the corner laundromat.

Around 8 am, while everything's drying, I'll go to the post office and pick up all of my mail. I thonk I will go to Toyland tomorrow, where I will spend the time making further corrections to the vocal score and full scores of DEAREST ENEMY that will go to Rodgers & Hammerstein for further correctins, if they chose to put it into their theatre library.

I have no TOD this morning on which to report. I'm still settling in.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy, Safe & Healthy Weekend Vibes to all the DRs! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went ahead and biked down to Columbus Circle and am treating myself to breakfast at Landmarc. In a little while, I'll head down to 54th Street for my day of CAN-CAN dance rehearsals. And it turns out I have a couple of friends in th cast too, and it will be good to see them today too!
I am surprised....
No, SHOCKED!....
 :o :o :o
That you've never seen THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE.
It's one of my all time favorite haunted house movies; was released the same summer as THE EXORCIST.
And, it was either written by or based on a story by Richard Mathison.
Speaking of haunted house movies: Have you ever seen THE CHANGELING with George C. Scott?  That's another goodie.
Indeed!  How did THAT happen?  It's almost impossible to comprehend.
I think I saw it at the Fox on Hollywood Blvd.
THE CHANGELING, on the other hand, I totally missed back in the day.  Watched it for my first time on DVD last year.
DR Elmore:
Why did McGlinn do the BRIGADOON?  Please excuse, I haven't read the notes yet.  Was it to capture the complete score?  It wasn't a reconstruction project, was it?
No,  I've heard that it was an emergency stopgap after McGlinn's arrogance and foolishness resulted in a canceled complete OKLAHOMA! recording. I had heard BRIGADOON was its replacement and EMI had to pay off the contracted OKLAHOMA! performers that were unused in BRIGADOON. The full score and parts used in the recording were the Tams-Witmark rental materials. I think it's one of McGlinn's best, but that was why his EMI contract was not renewed, and he was once again unemployed. A total fool.
Here are Karl Harpur and our producer, three-time Grammy winner Judy Sherman. I firsat worked with Judy on my first recording, John McGlinn's SONGS OF NEW YORK. She also produced all of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus recordings for Telarc and Virgin Classics. I've known her for nearly 30 years.
Tony Danza was supposed to be in HONEYMOON IN VEGAS before that got delayed (I think) a season, so "they" :) are doing "Who's the Boss" parody lyrics in the Times comment box, too!
We know more about the shooting: a former employee of a store near the Empire State Building at 33rd Street waited to shoot the manager. After he shot his victim, all hell broke loose. Some of the victims may have been wounded by police in the return fire.
There was a series of harrassment complaints from both victim and shooter, and this was a battle going on for about a year.
I got a really nasty tweet (and follow-up) from Steohen Farrow, which makes me wonder if people must think the finger-on-the-golden-delete--button Ann Miner is Mother Superior crossed with Cinderella's fairy godmother Theresa.
Who the hell is this brilliant but cuttingly caustic Mr. Farrow?  He seems like he has a real mean streak, but his tweets and feeds are very entertaining (when not directed at those I love)!  I'd love to get to have a normal conversation with him someday, he must be a bitchy joy if he's not hating you at that particular moment.
A pompous ass who thinks that he is superior to one and all.  I beleve he has some remote connection with education, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde. To me, he is living proof that those who can't, teach.
I once pulled a stupid and careless thing in my first days on a computer, passing his rude private email to me on to the entire Cast Recording List. The more I tried to apologize, the uglier he became and, as I became more defensive, I behaved as badly as he.
So far, so good. I guess.
It took about a good hour for my fingers and brain to warm up this morning - I actually think I had too much coffee this morning - but the dance rehearsals have been going well.
Why not "Mrs Doubtfire"? Actually, it might be charming, if they did something like ONCE with the screenplay and didn't faithfully follow the film. Is Larry Gelbart still alive?
I just checked his IMDb listing (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0312205/), under "In Development" at the top, is "1. City of Angels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1458164/) (details only on IMDbPro (http://pro.imdb.com/))."
Has this been mentioned before??
Isn't that one by the wonderful Neil Berg?
I would welcome a movie version of "City of Angels." I think "Tootsie" is perfect on its own, and both Jessica Lange and Teri Garr are so wonderful. I guess I don't see the need for a stage treatment, as a musical or a play.
"Grumpy Old Men," however, has possibilities. And I like the cast I've read about so far.
I don't know if my IRS-Social Security mess is cleared up or not, and I will know nothing until I see my accountant next week, but I did get in today's mail a form from Social Security about a password for their website. I hope it bodes good. Of course, if Romney wins, I'm moving to Dublin since he and Ryan want to abolish all the governmental services they took advantage of.
I also got a statement from my HMO about thw anesthetist's fee for my colonoscopy, of which my HMO paid $142 of a $3400 bill on the grounds that he's not an approved physician. Curious, since he works in my HMO office where the colonoscopy was perforned, and I have no idea if I will get a bill for $3258 or not. I hate this stupid crap.
Legend of Hell House is one of the great horror films along the lines of The Haunting (Robert Wise) if Hell House was ever remade they's soup it up like the remake  of the Haunting with Catehrine Zeta Jones. People won't see a movie without CGI effects.
Had a sandwich and no fries or onion rings, picked up one package and an important envelope, did some banking, and am now home.  Just spent thirty minutes on the phone with Apple Care - when we did the last update for Safari, naturally they had to totally screw up the way it used to work and what I'm used to, i.e. if I was on this site, and clicked on a link, I would be taken to whatever the link site was.  Then by using the back arrow I'd be back at our site.  Apparently that was too easy, so now the back arrow can't be used to get back - instead it opens the second link in a tab and you have to click on the previous tab to get back.  It's just relearning, but how stupid.
I believe Aine took this photo of Stephen Rea recording the Finale from the chorus loft. He's on the left in black, next to Karl Harpur in orange.
Now I am confused.  In your pictures yesterday you identified those two gentlemen in reverse order.  And since I don't know either one of them, I took it that Karl was the one in black and that Stephen Rea was in orange.
...That reminds me of the time when Blue Cross/Blue Shield would not cover an emergency room visit I had. The reason: "You weren't admitted to the hospital." -Even though the doctor spent a good hour of "active" time on me, including ordering three major tests since he could not figure out what was happening. -This was part of my "mystery allergy" - which, alas, remained a mystery.
Title: Re: BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS
Post by: JoseSPiano on August 24, 2012, 04:18:07 PM
...And there was another ER visit I had to contest - again, on the grounds that it was not a true emergency since I was not admitted. However, thankfully, the doctor mentioned in his chart that he had had a group of medical students come in while I was in the examination room - they were on rounds. He even asked them what they thought could be causing my allergic reaction. -I developed hives all over my body and my blood pressure went through the roof. An epi-pen helped return me to normal, but no specific trigger was ever found. In the meantime, since I could prove that for 20 minutes first year med students were giving possible diagnoses... ::)
We know more about the shooting: a former employee of a store near the Empire State Building at 33rd Street waited to shoot the manager. After he shot his victim, all hell broke loose. Some of the victims may have been wounded by police in the return fire.
There was a series of harrassment complaints from both victim and shooter, and this was a battle going on for about a year.
And there was a shooting in Brooklyn(?) last night where a street vendor thought another street vendor was honing on his turf, so he took out a gun and started firing. Two people were injured. Thankfully, two cops were in the area and had the situation under control in a very short amount of time.
There was a major production of Company in Australia a few years ago where this happened...here's what the Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_(musical)#2007_Australian_production) says:
Quote
2007 Australian production
Kookaburra Musical Theatre mounted a production directed by Gale Edwards in Sydney in June 2007, starring David Campbell as Bobby, with a cast including Simon Burke, Anne Looby, James Millar, Pippa Grandison, Katrina Retallick, Tamsin Carroll and Christie Whelan. The show was well-received, and Sondheim travelled to Australia for the first time in thirty years to attend the opening night. However, the production caused major controversy when Whelan was out sick for one performance and (with no understudy) Kookaburra chief executive Peter Cousens insisted the show be performed anyway, but without the character of April. This involved cutting several numbers and scenes with no explanation, and that night's performance ended twenty minutes early. Following complaints from the audience, there was considerable negative press attention to the decision, and Sondheim threatened to revoke the production rights for the show.
And people on castrecl tell me that when a person I do not know
posts creepy imposing images of gravestones; posts announcements online that "FRED LANDU is dead"; posts "Ugh" in the NY Times comments to  a Molly Ringwald parody (of all things) in a manner that has to take insanely circuitous steps to go out of his way to keep his identity from being detected; insists that he knows me personally and that I "consider him a friend": and directs at me a lyric
"I wanna stick pins your eyes...
In short
I really hope you die"
People there have the audacity to tell me that I cannot read and that I am reacting to something that is not there, when all I ask is that the owner of a chat board (Ann Miner and Mike Reynolds) who knows the person's identity just assure me that the person is not a madman.
I'm sorry that you are working yourself into such a state, DR FJL, but I think you're letting some creep drive you mad for his personal amusement and you're giving him a fantastic show. Larry, she and Mike gave up the guy vic's name already, because he was stupid enough to sarcastically give a one-penny contribution when they were doing a donation drive when they were still a non-profit.  Posters are anonymous, contributors are not under non-profit law. vic at least appears to be that guy Jeff I've been mentioning, but all I have any evidence of is that the stuff is coming from a COMPUTER ACCOUNT that Jeff controls, not that it's coming from HIM personally at all, and that - I think incredibly - is simply not sufficient for the police to even put a watch on, it seems from everything I've tried the whole past year since I got the letter from Ann and Mike.  The head of Jeff's department is a fellow named Felix, who must of course be careful, because truly there is a very real chance that someone in a position like Jeff's is being framed, but what is almost no doubt is that it's coming form someone in the GMHC employ working on their own computers during their work day, because Felix has confirmed that no GMHC computers have visited DataLounge Theatre Gossip or the New York Times Molly Ringwald article comments in the last 30 days.  I forgot to ask if they visited Talkin Broadway, but actually, so many people visit Talkin Broadway that that might not be a sign of anything.
Skip and I just nearly jumped out of our chairs at the noise that came from my phone in the other room about a half hour ago!  What a sound!
Someone (I would imagine, but can't possibly know for sure, that it's one of Jeff and Felix's staff must be working those late-night hours, but I really have no certain proof) just considerately switched our anonymous call rejection feature back to where I'd had it on Tuesday before my first talk with Felix, before it had been adjusted apparently without my authorization before, but I really have no way of knowing for sure.
I am so glad Skip was here to hear the noise this time, though!  And to see that the sound did not register on star-69 at all whatsoever.  I was beginning to doubt whether the first switch had actually happened until this switch-back happened.
BK,
I am surprised....
No, SHOCKED!....
 :o :o :o
That you've never seen THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE.
It's one of my all time favorite haunted house movies; was released the same summer as THE EXORCIST.
And, it was either written by or based on a story by Richard Mathison.
Speaking of haunted house movies: Have you ever seen THE CHANGELING with George C. Scott?  That's another goodie.
Indeed!  How did THAT happen?  It's almost impossible to comprehend.
I think I saw it at the Fox on Hollywood Blvd.
THE CHANGELING, on the other hand, I totally missed back in the day.  Watched it for my first time on DVD last year.
I saw it on Hollywood Blvd., too.  We probably saw it at the same theater.
Tonight's Restaurant Week dinner: tomato and watermelon salad with avocado, pork loin with red cabbage and roasted potatoes, and ginger peach cobbler.
DR JohnG - Does your restaurant week last just a week? or does it last two to three weeks like it does here in NYC? -And twice a year now too!
We have two Restaurant Weeks, which are offered by different organizations. But this one is only a week, though a few restaurants are now offering their specials for several weeks.
It's only three years old, but it's really growing. A pair of friends who live on the outskirts of town will take a hotel room downtown and just go to four or five places over the course of several days. And, of course, they get to enjoy the River Walk, too.
Well, I'm off.  I need to buy some non-alcoholic beverages for TAO's Get A Heart On for TAO- 2012 Summer Fundraiser (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/264754)! :D
It's happening tomorrow night!  I actually sold five, count 'em FIVE tickets!  I hope other people were able to sell more than I have...this is an important fund raiser, so we need all the (financial) help we can.
Anyway, be back later!
Non-alcoholic beverages? I'm afraid that phrase is in a language I don't readily comprehend. Those are like mixers, right?
Have started watching the Andrew Davies "Middlemarch" miniseries, which is just wonderful. It wasn't filmed on much of a budget, but it crams so much of the novel into each wonderful episode that I can't get any work done because I want to watch every last second. (Thanks again, Elmore.)
Yes, I've heard them called that, too. :)
Back from vocal session one - got six things done so a heavy day tomorrow - I was hoping for nine tonight, but it was taking a long time to load each song off the hard drive we brought back from NY.  Tomorrow, the engineer is going in early to get all of that done before we arrive at eleven.  So it should all go faster tomorrow.  I like to get at least two if not three songs an hours.  She's doing very well, and Guy Haines came by and did his part of the Be A Santa duet.  It's been almost nineteen years since he originally sang it, but he basically sounds the same, but we'll help him in the mix :)
I don't doubt that I bought too much soda (I found that the best deals were at Safeway), but as long as we don't open everything, I should be able to take back most of what we don't use.  However, one of the deals (for the Coke products) was buy two, get two for free...and the purchase of all four was required.  If I take two back, I won't get anything back, so the regular Coke be kept by someone (not me).  I will keep any diet Pepsi that's left.
